Check a Pro Joe here on the Check A Pro,
A Pro Radio show with one of my favorite home service professionals here at Check a Pro Nathan Shafer from Shafer heating and cooling.
Hey,
Nathan.
Hey Joe,
how are you?
I am living the dream.
Thank you so much.
Hey,
a question coming into the radio show.
Can I ask you this question of a listener?
(00:21):
Absolutely.
OK.
Question is I bought a thermostat now,
what should I do?
I think I know your answer.
Hopefully you kept the receipt and you can return it.
Why is that?
No,
in all seriousness though?
I mean,
you know,
that,
that is a great question.
So that does come up quite often.
Um You know,
(00:42):
and it's,
they're,
they're readily available.
You can get one anywhere you go to your local hardware store or online or et cetera.
Uh But oftentimes what we find is that people will buy uh their own thermostat and try to put it on and then oftentimes it leads into more issues,
um maybe they're wired up differently or incorrectly.
Um And it causes a short,
sometimes it's as simple as it blows a fuse.
Other times it takes out a transformer or maybe a circuit board or,
(01:06):
or creates communication faults within the system.
And so there are so many different types of systems out there uh from different staging to different types,
different compatibilities and same with thermostats.
Not all thermostats are universal thermostats.
And so,
uh not only just to,
to save yours,
save yourself the time uh of,
of not getting your system back up and running as quickly as possible,
(01:27):
but also to save yourself some money.
I would suggest,
um,
calling a professional,
uh,
to ensure that we get the right thermostat for your system for your needs and that it gets installed correctly,
not only installed correctly but also programmed correctly.
So your system still works as efficiently as possible.
I would agree.
So,
let me ask you a question.
Let's say it's the holidays and someone received a new smart thermostat.
(01:52):
It's a pretty nice product.
It's a big brand name.
Is it possible that you guys can come out and install it and make it compatible?
It is possible.
Yes.
Yeah.
So once again,
depending on that,
what system you have and,
uh,
depending on that thermostat,
if it's everything is compatible.
Um,
that is a possibility.
Yeah.
Ok.
And,
but you really rather,
(02:13):
uh,
be able to match the,
you know,
the furnace and the air conditioning system with the correct thermostat and you guys keep this product stocked in the warehouse on the truck,
don't you?
Absolutely.
Yeah.
The trucks are fully stocked.
Um,
they're also in stock here at the shop.
So we have lots of choices to choose from.
Uh,
the technician will have it on the truck when they're there.
(02:34):
And another thing too to remember as far as for us,
you know,
personally is,
uh,
you know,
even if you did,
in that case,
you did get one,
maybe it's for Christmas or whatever.
Um,
and you want to put that on a lot of times too.
I,
not only us,
but a lot of companies prefer to put it in and install um,
parts that they sell versus ones that maybe you provide forces is a one on liability.
(02:55):
Uh But two,
it's just,
it's just a long term relationship,
right?
And so typically when something happens and we install maybe your parts uh and something doesn't work later down the road,
then,
then it can cause a,
a point in the finger.
Right.
Well,
it's,
it's the thermostat's fault,
right?
In this case,
the part,
well,
no is because you wired it up wrong or this,
that and the other.
And for us as a company,
(03:15):
we always like to take all the risk off of our customers and we put it all on us just like we don't have new terms and conditions,
we have all written guarantees on our invoices.
And so a lot of things that we do differently and so that when anything happens later down the road Hey,
it's always us.
Right.
We got you.
And which is why we give a lifetime,
uh,
warranty,
uh,
on all our repairs.
Um,
and so just lots of things to keep in mind sometimes saving a couple bucks up front,
(03:39):
uh,
to get that one off the shelf isn't always the long term,
uh,
best approach.
It's best not to mess with the original equipment.
Can you imagine,
Nathan,
someone taking a Ford F 150 replacing the engine with a Toyota going back to Ford saying it doesn't work.
Yeah,
that's not our engine,
right?
(04:00):
That,
that's not compatible.
And so I know that's an extreme example,
but people can get these products now at home stores or online very easily.
Yeah,
it sounds crazy when you put it like that right in that analogy.
But really that's what happens every day uh with a lot of people's H PAC systems with their heating cooling systems,
(04:21):
uh or different things in the home.
And so really that we shouldn't treat that any differently because uh there's a lot of things to take into consideration.
You know,
it's the utilities that you're paying each month.
If it's not working correctly,
it's the safety of,
you know,
your home and your family.
Um,
a lot of things go into that.
So we wanna make sure everything is working 100% correctly properly and is a,
is a match.
And Nathan,
I like what you said,
(04:42):
the liability is on you.
So when you come and install the thermostat and you come and you maintain my H VAC system when something goes wrong,
I call you and your team comes out and they fix it because you're responsible for it now.
Absolutely.
And we're available 24 7.
So you don't have to wait till tomorrow or,
or Monday,
(05:02):
right to go back to that particular store when they open.
Uh,
our team is readily available around the clock.
So,
uh,
even if it is a holiday or middle of the night,
uh,
we're always there ready to,
to serve our customers in need and I love your maintenance plans over time.
People can be protected.
That's fantastic.
Absolutely.
Nathan,
thank you so much for joining me today on the program.
(05:22):
Appreciate it.
Hey,
thank you.
Have a good day.
