Darline Berrios (00:03):
Hey everyone,
welcome to Share Your Sparkle
and I'm your host, Dr. DarlineBerrios. This is season two,
episode nine 1000 words. Hieveryone, I'm going to get
started with a memory a quotethat I saw somewhere and some
(00:26):
words that I found on a treethis morning. So this is to my
French. I don't know if they'reFrench actually. So whoever's
listening in France, this is foryou. I feel like I need to keep
you connected somehow. But itseems like you're staying
connected anyway. But yesterday, and this is for everybody else.
(00:51):
If you actually travel theresomeday, I highly recommend the
hotel where we stayed. It isBest Western. I know that sounds
strange. Because here in theUnited States, best westerns
aren't considered like hula. Butin Paris, there's this Best
(01:13):
Western premier hotel. This isin French, so I don't know how
to say it. Leave it somethingwith literary list one. And it's
located on 15 roof deck,Constantinople, in Paris,
France. The neighborhood isreally quiet. It's not a one way
(01:36):
street. And yesterday. Oh,sorry. Let me say a little bit
more about the hotel. It'sactually has a theme related to
Marcel Proust, who was a Frenchnovelist. He wrote a book called
in search of lost time, andbased on his life
(01:58):
psychologically, andallegorically. That's what it
says here in Botanica. It saysthe title in French too, and I'm
going to I don't know how tospeak French because when I went
to Paris, All I said was, mercibeaucoup like over and over
again with a huge smile. Andthat worked because everyone was
wonderful. But a lot of chairsthat temps perdu. See, I don't
(02:22):
know what I didn't even speakbesides Merci beaucoup. And, but
in Spanish, it's la busca deltiempo para de donde. So there
it is in Spanish. And there islike writing on the walls like
related to his work. And itseems like it was like a little
museum. Honestly, really nice, small neighborhood, or quiet
(02:46):
neighborhood really closewalking distance to one of the
major, like Metro stops. So ifyou're listening, and maybe you
know exactly where I'm talkingabout across the street, this is
why my memory yesterday, randomly, I thought of this
fruit store, it's not a stand,because it's literally a small
(03:08):
store that you walk into, probably smaller, or not as even
big as an eight by 10 likebedroom. And there was just
really good fruit there. Iremember buying some oranges and
bananas. And that was my memory.
So for my French listener, Idon't know if you know where
that is in the world. But andfor everybody else, I highly
(03:31):
recommend that hotel. It was itwas really great. And it's not
like in the hustle and bustle ofParis. But it was close to a lot
of different things. And it wasquiet. And I remember the room
having this little balcony area.
I don't know if you can walk outto it. But you could definitely
(03:53):
open the windows, and you haveyour own little terrorists. And
it was really nice. So from forthe French listener, that's for
you. And for everybody else, youshould definitely stay there
someday. The other thing I sawquote, I can't remember if it
was from my like momentum appthat like has different quotes
(04:17):
every day or if I read itsomewhere. But it said and I'm
paraphrasing stop big problemswhen they are little. I love
that. I love that. Stop bigproblems. When they are little.
(04:37):
Wouldn't that be really great?
you kind of know whensomething's going to be a big
problem. Take forexample, my beautiful dog being
when I got him he was like 20pounds and he was like Oh so
cute jumping on you, you knowbiting your hand off. And now
he's almost 60 jumping on youbiting your hand off or your
butt. Not so fun, right? I knewthat. problem, or when my sister
(04:59):
taught him right to hear biteyour blanket, and we'll pull it
and we'll play tug of war. Nowhe does that with every blanket.
Hmm. Cute when I was little notso cute when he's big. And he's
still not full grown yet. Sostop big problems when they are
little. I thought that was agreat quote. And the last
message before I get started, orI really started, but the last
(05:25):
message I have was there weresome words I found on a tree
this morning. So you know, well,if you've been listening, I hike
every morning, or I try to incoming down the mountain.
There's a section in on thetrail that's really wet, I'm
talking about like, muddy waterjust pools there. So there is a
(05:49):
smaller trail off the main trailthat you could just take that
kind of bypasses that section.
And in the woods there on atree, it says, God says, You're
beautiful. That's what's writtenon the tree. God says, You're
(06:13):
beautiful. So that's what thetree said, literally. All right.
1000 words. I think that thismight trigger, not memory. But
for some of you the phrase apicture's worth 1000 words. But
(06:39):
this is actually literally about1000 words, in a film a movie,
who knew maybe you knew aboutthis, but Eddie Murphy and Kerry
Washington have this moviecalled 1000 words that came out
in 2012. I had no clue at all.
And I think within the pastweek, I was watching TV, and I
(07:04):
caught the last, I would say 15minutes of the movie where
things really kind of go down.
And if you want to watch themovie, without knowing what
happens, you might want to stoplistening, because I'm basically
going to tell you everythingthat happens in the movie. And
(07:25):
it's 1000 words by Eddie, Imean, and Eddie Murphy and Kerry
Washington are in it. But if youdon't care to watch it, but you
still want to know about it.
Here we go. So I got to the partwhere it was really like, like I
said, the film was he had ducttape on his mouth, and he was
(07:47):
talking to the tree with hismind. So let me kind of tell you
what this this movies about. I'mjust going off here. I know
Wikipedia, right? But, um, toexplain the plot. So in the
movie, Eddie Murphy is aliterary agent, and he's a
(08:09):
talker, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, you know, he's, he's a big
shot, he gets all these greatdeals. And, and he's trying to
get this what they're callinglike a new age self help guru
named Dr. xinja. To sign withhim. Right and, or with his
company. And he's like, no, Ican get a deal with him. I can
(08:31):
do this. And everyone's tryingevery like publisher, or
literary agent is trying to getDr. Center to get on board with
their their company. And the wayEddie Murphy does it is he goes
to his retreat center, Dr.
(08:51):
Cengiz Retreat Center, and hejoins one of the meditation
classes. And in it, you know, people get a guided metta
meditation. So Dr. senja istalking and saying, you know,
telling them what chance to useand everybody around them, or
who's performing the meditationand listening is you know,
(09:12):
chanting own and then he's justguiding that person just guiding
them. And Eddie Murphy's, youknow, in his business suit,
which is really funny, whileeverybody's in their yoga gear.
And he's following along atfirst Eddie Murphy is and then
he's like, oh, man, then he goesinto mama say mama sama macusa
(09:36):
of course in Eddie Murphy style, right? And then he just kind of
goes off andpretty much fakes. It's he's
having this enlightenment momentand then Dr. Kissinger, you
know, pulls him aside and it'skind of like, Are you okay, but
that's his, his end to get alonewith the New Age self, self help
guru and Doctor Center, youknow, sees right, right through
(10:00):
Eddie Murphy is trying to do.
But he eventually he signs, youknow with Eddie Murphy, Eddie
Murphy leaves the retreatcenter. You know, thinking he is
the king of all literary agentsbecause he just signed this big
deal with Dr. Cynthia Buddle, what happens is that night A
(10:28):
Bodhi tree magically appears inEddie Murphy's backyard. Or jack
McConnell's back yard and thetree of so let me explain what a
Bodhi tree is quickly. It's alarge an ancient sacred fig
(10:50):
tree. And it is believed thespiritual teacher who became
known as the Buddha is said tohave attained enlightenment. You
know, sitting by this tree. Sothis tree suddenly just
(11:12):
overnight appears. And then,Eddie Murphy is like, What's
this? What's going on? And thedoctor Cengiz like I don't know
what this is like. He comesover, because he notices Eddie
Murphy notices that every timehe speaks, that leaves start
(11:36):
falling off the tree. So hethinks this is like a joke or
curse like what's going on?
Remember, he's a blabber, thisbig talker. And doctors and just
like, no, this is not a joke. Idon't know, I've never seen this
before. I'm going on a retreatsomewhere off in the world. I
think somewhere in SouthAmerica, I'm going to talk to
the other people I know. Let mesee if they've heard of anything
(11:57):
like that. And he's like thiscurse, you got to get rid of
this curse. Once again, everytime he speaks, leave start
coming off the tree. He's like, well, you're connected to this
tree. Now. You're, you areconnected with this tree. And
he's like, what do you thinkhappens when a tree loses its
leaves. And he's like, you'regonna die. And jack is like, no,
(12:20):
like, come on. Now. Stop this, cut this out. Find out like how
to fix this. Because like Isaid, he's a blogger, right? And
it's even the written word like,he can't even write stuff down
without the leaves falling off.
(12:40):
So Dr. senja leaves on hisretreat. Eddie Murphy is left
for three days, trying to figureout how to survive without
talking. And I'm going to justgo back to the the depth
explanation of the plot here.
With jack forced to pick andchoose his words, communicating
(13:01):
with others becomes difficultand full of misunderstandings.
These misunderstandings causedhim to book deals. His job, and
his wife and his wife is KerryWashington. She walks out on him
when she thinks his suddensilence is due to him not loving
her anymore. When he tries toexplain the tree to her, she
(13:27):
doesn't believe him. And onlyJack's assistants assistant
sorry. realize he's telling thetruth. And the assistant. The
relationship between him andEddie Murphy is really
hilarious. This is a young kid.
It kind of reminds me of thatrelationship between Anne
(13:50):
Hathaway and the Devil WearsPrada. Oh my God, why can't I
think of that big gadget actresswhere she just does anything for
him for her and similarsituation in here with the
assistant and Eddie Murphy. Andonly Jack's assistant is, is the
one that realizes he's tellingthe truth. And he goes to Jack's
(14:11):
house. And you know, he sees atone point.
jack is just drunk, like crazybecause he's already lost his
wife, lost his job, lost two bigbook deals his job. And he's
trying to get him to stoptalking. But jack is drunk.
punches him kind of like youknow, knocks him out. Because he
(14:32):
gets to the point where he's sodesperate. jack is so desperate
Eddie Murphy so desperate thathe doesn't know what to do. He's
like, forget it. If I have thisis it then this is it. I'm going
to go. He wakes up the nextmorning with duct tape on his
mouth. And he goes to the treeand kind of like accepts what's
happened in where he is. Andthere's about one branch left
(14:57):
with I don't know, maybe like 11Words reliefs, I'm sorry on it.
And at that point he finallygets in touch with Dr. cynjohn.
He's like, it just kind ofthings is like I didn't find out
anything from the conference.
He's like, just kind of likemake peace with all your
relationships and it is what itis. So with this one branch left
(15:18):
Eddie Murphy, or jack tries togo around and, and reconcile
with the different people in hislot, the different people around
him. So to his This is a, Ithought this was a beautiful
scene. He goes to KerryWashington, and they have a baby
(15:40):
together, wherever she is, inhis wife in the movie. And I
believe, sorry, if I don'tremember the order correctly, he
goes, You, me. And then youknow, he puts his hand on the
baby. We are eternity. And thenhe kisses him both and walks
(16:03):
away. He goes to his mom, hismom is in Assisted Living
Center, she has dementia. Everytime in the past in the movie,
when she sees him, she thinksthat Eddie Murphy is actually
her husband, right? His dad and,and there's a lot of pain there
because I believe his dad leftwhen he was younger. And you
(16:24):
know, she talks to Eddie Murphyas if that's her husband, and
she's like, jack has so muchpain, and I wish she would let
it go. And then he goes in onelast time on her birthday. And
he you know, in this instance ofthe scene, he says yes, that he
is, you know, her husband, because she doesn't know who he
(16:47):
is exactly. And she just startstalking to him and saying it's
my birthday. And same thing Iwish jack would let go all this
pain. And he just, you know, Ibelieve kisses his mom as well
and says, Ma, I love you, andthen walks out after that scene.
And then he goes to a gravesite. And in it, or at the on
(17:13):
the tombstone, it has hisfather's name. And he's standing
there. And there are three wordsleft. I'm sorry, yeah, three
words left or three leaves left.
And he says to his dad, Iforgive you. And then at that
(17:35):
point, thunder, rain comes down,he clenches his chest and goes
down. It looks like he's dying.
For a few minutes, you don'treally know if he if he has
died. And then the phone rings, his cell phone rings. And you
see his hand reach for and it'shis assistant and his assistant
(17:57):
is telling him the tree justlike blossomed, new leaves like
it's it's alive again. And EddieMurphy is like his back. So it
comes up. Turns out that he endsup writing a book from this
experience, you know, the lastfew minutes. It's called 1000
(18:20):
words and his assistant in thatis now like a big literary
agent, then he loves the doctorsin general because he like he
died, his old self died. And hisnew self. He's like, no, this is
my real self. You know, heappreciated that experience,
even though he hated thatpassenger while it was
(18:40):
happening. But now he's like, thank you so much. And he has
this rejuvenated. sense, ornewness about him? Because his
old self died. He goes to repairhis relationship with Kerry
Washington, of course Whowouldn't? Right. And, you know,
(19:00):
a few other things happen beforethe film ends, but it just made
me think about in life, how ifwe have a limited something, and
we know it,right, whether it's limited
time, money limited? Gosh, Idon't even know what I mean.
(19:25):
Let's take this literal example.
Like let's say you only had 1000words left to say. I understand
the humor here as a podcastcasters talking about words. I
feel like when we're limited, weeither really careless and just
(19:45):
like don't know what to do andkind of crazy about it. Right
and either spend it or lose itquickly. Or it makes us pause
and we're really cautious andthoughtful. About how we're
going to use the time words, money, whatever the thing is,
(20:07):
right? That you're, that youhave. And he kind of goes
through that the kind of goes,he goes through those phases. I
mean, one of the funny parts, orI think it's funny in the film,
he's in front of the tree andlike testing it out. And he
starts saying, I want my babythat baby, baby back, baby back.
And well, my baby Baby, youknow, like the Chili's
commercial thing because he'slike, Is this for real, and he,
(20:29):
he burst out into this Chili'scommercial jig, or a jingle. And
I feel like, we're like thatsometimes. We're either we don't
know what to do. And then we'rereally like, desperate and, and
hasty about our decisions. Or itmakes us really thoughtful. And
(20:58):
more meaningful in our approachto whatever it is that we don't
have that much of left. 1000words is about like three to
four pages, I think, like Googleattached as a Google document,
and I was like, What's 1000words? And I didn't even know if
I've said like, 1000 words inthis podcast already. But what
(21:21):
if you only had 1000 words left?
To say? What would you say? Whowould you say them to? We
probably have way more than 1000words, I hope. But being more
thoughtful and meaningful aboutthe things that we say. I think
(21:46):
that's a good thing. And everyonce in a while reminding
ourselves of Hey, what if I have1000 words? What's really
important? What do I really say?
(22:06):
What's just blabber?
1000 words. Think about it.
Alright, people except yoursparkle, surrender to it and
allow it to be so until then.
