How can you be your most authentic self in rooms where you feel compelled to change? Being the only Black women in the room is never easy. This week, we talked with Fatimata Cham, an activist, poet, and gender equality activist, to explore how to #BeBrave in all areas of life. We discussed her journey growing up in the Bronx, New York, discovering sisterhood in college, and how she uses her voice for social change. ABOUT FATIMATA: Activist. Poet. Gender Equality Advocate, Fatimata Cham is originally from the Bronx, New York, she is 21 years old and is a first-generation Gambian college student. She is a double major in Government and Law and Women and Gender studies. She is also a 2019 Coca-Cola scholar, Truman Scholar, and former girl up teen advisor to the United Nations Foundation. Fatimata is passionate about advocating for her community and does so through her writing. In high school, Fatimata published a short book of poetry titled Perfectly Imperfect. She uses the intersection between poetry and activism to talk about issues related to environmental injustice, gender inequity, racism, Islamophobia, and a plethora of issues she is passionate about. She is also the president of her college’s girl up and currently serves as Vice-President of Student Government. Recently, She was cast in Dear Season 2 on Apple TV alongside Malala Yousfzai. She hopes to build a more just and equitable world through her work and uplift those around her.
