because I'm giving you seventhings that you're probably
going to need to spend money onwhen you're starting your
business.
I know that's hard to swallowbecause you're like I want to
spend the least amount of moneyas possible, but you have to
know when you're starting abusiness, you are spending some
money.
Now, last week, on Episode 286,I shared with you ways that so
(00:48):
many new small business ownersare wasting money.
You're overspending.
You're wasting cash.
Don't do it.
Today.
I'm talking about things thatyou probably are going to need
to spend money on that are goodinvestments of your time, energy
and money.
So I'm so excited you're here.
If you're new, welcome.
I'm so glad that you found thispodcast.
I have no doubt it's going tohelp you along your business
(01:09):
journey.
Whether you're in the idea stage, starting or rowing, this is
for you, and if you're startinga podcast for your business,
this is for you as well.
I know how hard it can be whenyou're starting everything.
You're trying to piece togetherall the steps and figure it all
out.
Well, I've got some freegoodies for you to help you so
that you no longer have to flailaround.
I have a 16-step checklist forstarting your business.
(01:30):
If you're starting right now, make sure you scroll down in the
show notes and get that okay.
And even if you're in the ideastage, I have a guide for you
that helps you discover yourtrue business purpose, which is
called Aikigai.
I don't know if you've everheard of it.
It's a Japanese term that meansreason for being, and I have a
whole guide there that'sprintable and you can start
working on now to really digdeep.
If you're struggling, like youknow, you want to start a
(01:51):
business but you just don't evenknow what type you're meant to
start, then that's for you.
And then, if you are ready togrow your business or start your
podcast, I've got freeresources for you as well.
So make sure right now you getplugged in and get all of that.
I do have a free Facebook groupcalled Women Starting Businesses
and Podcasts Doing what we Love.
Make sure you'll check that out.
(02:12):
Get in the group.
It's super fun, and I wouldlove to get updates on what's
going on in your business.
That is like the happiest timeof my day when I see updates of
things that are going great orthings that you're working on.
It's so awesome.
So make sure you do that and ifyou've been listening a while.
Thank you so much to all myloyal listeners for the kind
words, the DMs, the emails, everything that y'all share with
(02:39):
me in gratitude of this podcast.
It means so much to me.
So many of you have told methat it's actually changed your
life, which is, oh my gosh, justso heartwarming, and I'm so
grateful for you sharing thatwith me because it makes me feel
like the time that I spend heredoing this podcast each week is
worth it.
If there's at least one personthat is getting value out of it,
then it's a success, right?
If you've been listening awhile, too, and you've never
(03:01):
subscribed to the podcast likeyou don't actually follow it
make sure you do that now.
So ask yourself do I followthis podcast?
Do I get updates when newepisodes drop each week?
If you don't go to your podcastapp For example, if you're on
Apple Podcasts, there's like alittle follow button or it may
be a little plus sign orcheckmark.
They've updated it several timesrecently, but you can follow
(03:25):
the podcast that way.
So look in the upper right-handcorner and you will see like a
little button that says FollowShow.
So make sure you check that out, because I don't want you to
miss out on any future episodesthat I know are going to help
you.
And also, too, if you've beenlistening a while and you find
value in this podcast, would yoube so kind to leave a written
review?
It takes you literally 30seconds.
(03:46):
It means the world to me and Ican't help but think that it
tells Apple and all the playersout there like Spotify, overcast
all of them that this podcastis worth listening to, and I
would love for them to show itto more people like you who
appreciate it.
So make sure you follow andthen make sure, if you have 30
seconds to write a writtenreview, you can hit 5 stars and
(04:08):
then write how this podcast hashelped you or what it's meant to
you.
That would mean so much to me.
So that's it.
Okay, on to the episode.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
Well, hello friends.
How are you?
How's everything going?
Speaker 2 (04:23):
I know so many of you
are in the idea stage, trying
to turn that passion that youhave into a business.
And some of you are herebecause you're starting your
business right now and I'm soexcited for you that you're
getting moving on this, because,y'all, so many people never do
this.
They don't have the courage, they're scared and they won't
put themselves out there.
But you're different.
You're different.
You're doing this scared, right?
(04:44):
You're just doing it anyways, because life is short.
Y'all, carpe diem, life isshort, and if you're here
because you're growing yourbusiness, then this is a good
refresher.
This is a really good refresheron things that are worthy of
spending your money on and notwasting them on, like last
week's episode.
Y'all listened to that, right?
If you haven't listened to lastweek's, after this episode, go
(05:06):
back and listen to it, because Ithink it will be a wake-up call
to you to not waste money rightnow.
In fact, y'all, it's that timeof year.
I'm filing my taxes and overthe past couple months I've been
looking at all my charges andeverything that I purchased and
I'm like you know what?
I have too much stuff.
I have too many littlememberships.
I have too much stuff thatisn't being used right, it's not
(05:26):
really being used to make moneyin my business or save me time,
and I need to stop.
And so, even in Grow Getters,my Grow Getters program, I've
been restructuring how that islike what platform it's on, and
all that good stuff Long storybut anyways, I've been
streamlining everything.
So it's not only streamliningmy business, it's it's helping
(05:48):
you.
I'm doing things that areactually making life easier for
you too.
So I get it.
My point is that all of usoverspend.
All of us overspend on thingsthat we don't need to, and I had
to take my own advice.
And, especially since last weekwhen I was recording that
episode and released it, I'mlike, in doing my taxes, I'm
like I'm overspending, like, yeah, this stuff is great, but I
(06:10):
don't need everything.
And yes, I've been in businessfive years, so I have a little
more flexibility to go ahead.
And oh, yeah, I'll get thissubscription.
I need this software, I needthis tool, but I just realized
this is silly.
This is silly.
I need to streamline everything.
I need to make it simple formyself and I need to make it
simple for y'all who need to getthe help that you need.
I need to make it as easy aspossible, right?
(06:32):
But here's the deal when you'restarting a business, there are
things that you're probablygoing to spend money on.
Now, this list that I'm goingto share with you does not
necessarily apply to you, sodon't take all of this as like
scripture that you're like, yes,I need to spend money on all of
that.
You may not.
Everyone's business isdifferent.
I always say that, as humansare each different, so are your
(06:54):
businesses right.
Your, your business is asdifferent as you are from other
people, and so everyone'sstrategy for what they're
spending money on has to beunique, and it has to be
customized to your business, your stage of life, your goals,
your values, your personality, all that stuff right your
financial means.
(07:15):
So take all of this seriously, but, at the same time, realize
that all of these that I listmay not 100% apply to you, but I
think they are eye-opening,because if you're going to be a
business owner, you need to be agood one, you need to be smart,
you need to be strategic, youneed to have things streamlined
right, and I had a wake-up call,too, as I said, when I was
(07:37):
doing my taxes and all my stuff.
I'm like what is happening?
I'm spending way too much money.
It should be only on the corethings that I need.
So let's go through these.
I think they're really going tohelp you.
You may need to take notesthere are seven of them and take
them seriously.
Okay, so the first one is okay.
Y'all, this is what I telleveryone in coaching.
First thing, you're going toneed to spend money on number
(07:59):
one.
If you're starting a businessand you're already busy, maybe
you have a full-time job,part-time job.
You're a mom, you homeschool, you volunteer, you work out, you
play pickleball, play tennis, you play chess I don't know what
all you do but all your hobbies.
Maybe you're a birdwatcher.
I used to have a client thatwas a birdwatcher.
I loved it so much.
She was starting a businesswith birdwatching, but it was
(08:20):
very, very cool.
But I think you have to hirepersonal help.
That's number one personal helpto free up your time so you can
actually concentrate, so youcan actually work.
That work, okay, that's whatthe majority of you are.
(08:49):
Or you work and you're tryingto make this your full-time
income so you can quit your work.
Wouldn't that be nice?
Or some of you are full-time Imean, I'm sorry, part-time.
You have a part-time job, so Ihave that as well.
Here's the deal.
You're going to need personalhelp more than you probably have
now, and this is what I usuallyrecommend to my coaching
clients is to look at the thingsaround your home.
That take you a lot of time.
(09:10):
Do you clean the house, do youcook, Do you grocery shop, do
you do things at home while ababy sleeps, or something like
that.
Could you get help so that youcould either work quietly in
your home or leave and worksomewhere else and come home?
(09:31):
You need time freed up so youcan concentrate.
If you're really serious aboutthis business, you are going to
need some personal help, andthat one is a hard one for a lot
of you, because you are incontrol.
You are able to manage it all.
You're superwoman.
(09:52):
You can do everything.
The truth is, you can't do allthings by yourself.
Okay, so here are myrecommendations for you as far
as getting personal help.
First of all, if you have smallchildren, think about getting a
nanny babysitter for 2 or 3 daysa week, for a few hours.
Now, again, your situation'sdifferent.
I don't know what it is.
Maybe it's every day.
(10:13):
You need a nanny, but when Iwas working with my online
boutiques years ago and I hadAva, who is now 16, I had her in
the middle of all that, at thepeak of my businesses, and I had
to hire a nanny a few days aweek and she would come over and
play with her for like two orthree hours, or even if I needed
, and then she would put downAva for nap and if I needed her
(10:34):
to run some errands she would.
But that was the main thing is,while Ava was awake a little
bit on those days, I wanted herto get playtime, work on puzzles
and do things like that, and soI had her there.
It was a lifesaver.
And then I actually startedhiring her for like a Friday
night or Saturday night so thatmy husband and I could go out.
So I had to pay for that.
I had to pay for that.
(10:54):
Now that we have grocery pickupand grocery delivery y'all,
there's no excuse.
You should not be at thegrocery store all the time when
you could be working on yourbusiness.
So highly recommend Instacart.
I use Instacart still all thetime Right now.
It's the greatest thing everfor a home entrepreneur If
you're working out of your homeeven if you're not like you may
(11:16):
be out somewhere else working tohave your groceries delivered.
In fact, like two days ago Iordered them and usually they
come in a few hours and they'reup here on your doorstep and
it's the most amazing thing ever.
But I paid like $3 for a rushbecause I was like, oh gosh,
we're leaving in a little while.
I think it was within an hour.
I had it may have even beenless than that.
(11:41):
I had all my groceries at mydoorstep.
I'm thinking I couldn't havegone to the store, walked around
, shopped, checked out, got home, loaded them you know loading,
unloading from the grocery store, brought them in.
I would have been exhausted.
Best money I spend is Instacart.
It's the greatest thing, right.
I also do HelloFresh, which is ameal delivery.
So what it is is the mealsaren't ready.
I still cook them.
But I like that because Iactually do enjoy cooking my
(12:04):
meals and I like healthy mealsand I actually have that 30
minutes or whatever it is.
It's like cathartic.
I'm cooking for the family.
It looks like a normal night, but really I had all the
ingredients sent to me and therecipes, so I don't have to
think that's.
My hardest thing is I justcannot use brain power trying to
figure out what's for dinner.
I literally have like a blankscreen on my face when I look in
(12:28):
the fridge and try to figureout what to cook for dinner.
It just after a long day's work.
It just does not come easy tome.
And so I love HelloFresh.
We get a few of our weeklymeals delivered, so that it's
not every night that I'm tryingto figure out.
Then the other nights I cankind of wing it, I'm like, oh,
we have ground beef, we haveground turkey, I can make
something else.
So y'all, my point is personalhelp.
So think about it right now.
Maybe you need yard work people.
(12:48):
We have yard people, I have to.
There's no way my husband worksall the time.
We cannot be doing all the yard, although we would love to be
doing our own yard and to knowthat.
You know we take pride in ouryard and would do it ourself.
But you know what?
The cleaning the yard, cleaningpeople they mow the lawn, they
edge, they do all kinds of stuffand it takes them like 30
minutes and it would take ushours and it's done right and
(13:09):
they have like four people outthere.
So it's amazing.
Personal help.
What personal help do you need?
So number one, I would saythat's money well spent in the
beginning of your business ispersonal help Like off the bat,
right then.
So do you have time to thinkand concentrate?
Number two you may need someoneto help you with legal setup
and like setting up your booksor QuickBooks or something to
(13:31):
help you with your books, ifyou're going to have a lot of
costs.
Now, some of you it's supereasy, like me with the service
business, it's not that hard todo your books y'all at all.
I use QuickBooks Onlineself-employed and, by the way,
you can scroll down in the shownotes.
Right now, anything that Irecommend is on my master
spreadsheet for you and I doupdate it regularly.
So scroll down in the shownotes and get access to that
master spreadsheet of all thetools and apps and all that that
(13:52):
I recommend.
But I use QuickBooks online.
It automatically pulls in mycredit card charges each month
and all that.
I knew kind of how to set up mybusiness because I'd opened
businesses before, but we dohave a CPA and I had confirmed
with her that all was good.
So you may need some help alittle bit right off the bat.
I will say a lot of you do notneed your LLC.
I'm just throwing that outthere.
(14:13):
A lot of you think that youneed an LLC right off the bat.
You don't.
I didn't have an LLC for like10 years my other businesses, I
should have had it sooner, butyou need to probably be making
like 30k a year with it beforeyou need one, unless you have a
structure in your home where youalready have other businesses
(14:34):
and you don't.
You know, if something were tohappen and someone were to sue
you, you want it.
You want them only to be ableto sue the portion of your
business.
So if you have a business, there may be some liability
involved.
I got my LLC when we lived inColorado, when I had my
boutiques, because it wassnowing all the time and icy and
I had so many packages on mydoorstep and then going out to
the mailbox I would have themstacked and the mail person
(14:56):
would have to come by and pilethem in their car because I had,
you know, they were giftboutiques and so I was petrified
that the mailman was going toslip and fall because I, you
know, and I had it on the porchand I mean that's a liability
right If it's, if there's aliability involved where someone
(15:23):
could sue you for something.
Then go ahead and get your LLC.
But here's my point A lot of youdo not need to get it the first
day you start your business.
Like, you can wait, you canwait 3 months, you can wait 6
months, you can wait a year, youcan wait 3 years, okay, so
don't think that you have torush, that you do need to get
your doing business as, and getthat all set up in your federal
EIN number.
(15:43):
So you want to make sure thatthat's all set up so that you
pay your taxes on what you oweeach year, right, okay?
So then that's number two yourbooks and your legal setup.
Okay.
Number three you're gettingyour domain name.
So, like, I wantedKimberlyBrockcom and getting
your website software, You'regonna have to pay for that.
(16:04):
Like, if you want to useSquarespace or Wix or Shopify,
you're going to have to paymonthly for that.
So you're gonna have to spendmoney on that.
Okay, you're gonna spend moneyon that, and that's just a fact.
You're gonna have to get yourdomain name.
So here's a trick I went to getmy domain name when I was
starting and somebody hadKimberlyBrockcom I think she's
an author and she had it, butthere was like KimberlyBrockme,
(16:28):
that's what I got.
I got KimberlyBrockme and I wasjust waiting and then
KimberlyBrockcom went for salefor like $1,500.
I was like what?
And so I was kind of watchingit.
And then over a few months Ihappened to ping it again to see
what it was for sale for and itwas like $497.
(16:50):
And I was like sold, I'm takingit, I can have this for the
rest of my life.
I can have KimberlyBrockcom,no-transcript to spend money on
(17:26):
that.
Number three you may need tospend money on your domain and
website.
You're probably going to haveto.
Well, obviously, if you wantyour domain, if you want a
website, you're going to have tospend money on that.
It's not that much.
Y'all Website platforms are notthat much each month.
Okay, I think Squarespace islike 20-something bucks a month
and Wix Shopify may be a littlebit more, but you got to have it
(17:48):
.
You got to have a store, okay.
Number four someone to designyour logo and your website.
You may need to spend money onthis, but I talked about this
last week.
Do not overspend on this rightnow.
What's going to be hard isyou're going to have to have it
good enough right now.
You're gonna have to have itgood enough, and that's hard,
unless you have a luxury,high-end brand that really needs
(18:08):
to be designed by a full-ondesigner and you have the money
to spend, because you could bespending $3,000 to $5,000
getting a logo and a websitethat's really designed well.
But you may be able to getsomeone less expensive on Fiverr
or AskAround because there arepeople that you may know that
can do something like this andhelp you get it up.
(18:30):
I let's see what did I do?
I did hire someone to do mywebsite and logo when I started
this one, so it was greatbecause I had someone do it for
me.
But I've ended up tweakingthings since then.
So you have to realize it's notgoing to be your end-all,
be-all design.
Now I could afford it, but someof you you may think, oh, this
is going to be my end-all,be-all, I'm going to spend money
on this.
I'll never have to spend moneyagain and it's not the it
(18:54):
platforms.
At some point you, you know, you're going to have different
thoughts about what you'reselling and your brand image and
you may want to change yourlook.
I don't know.
I would just be careful on thatand don't spend too much right
now.
I think there is a time and aplace to do that and really make
your website and logo look themost professional.
(19:15):
But when we're starting, we gotto be smart about our money and
realize that your business isgoing to evolve.
So I don't want you to want youto waste money on this.
So there is ways to get.
There are ways to get help.
And two, the website platforms.
Y'all Wix, squarespace, shopifyall those and I'm in Kajabi
have great templates to get youstarted.
(19:36):
So it's really not as hard asit used to be.
I had to hire like programmersback in the day to make my
website look good and y'all.
It's so much easier now.
Okay, so that's number four.
Number five your productdevelopment may cost you money.
Depending on what your productis.
You may have to test it, dodifferent iterations.
(19:56):
You may need to work on labels, packaging, all that.
You got to make it good.
It's got to work.
You got to have testers whomake sure that this product is
worthy of being sold, right, that people are going to want to
pay money for it so that youmay have services.
You may be saying I'm notselling products, I'm selling
services.
Okay, what equipment do you needfor your services Like, what
(20:19):
things do you need to have inplace so that you can offer what
you want to offer people?
You may need certain things.
Heck, if you're, if you'regoing, if you're like a home
decorator, you may need to buysamples of carpets.
I don't know, maybe they'llmake, they'll give them to you
for free but different bookletsthat have you know paint samples
(20:39):
, and even some make some coolportfolio, either online or
something you can show people.
That's a binder.
So you may need to spend money, like getting stuff together for
your services, right.
So remember that that you mayneed to do that.
You may need you know equipmentand speaking of that, for your
product design and your servicesand all that.
(21:01):
I don't know where I should havementioned this, but you need a
decent computer.
So, everybody, stop scrimpingon that.
You need a decent computer.
I got my daughter a MacBook Air, but it was like a grand and I
know you're like well, that's alot of money and I agree, you
can get them used on eBay.
You could do other things.
Just make sure y'all have agood computer.
(21:21):
Don't frustrate yourself evenmore with a computer that
doesn't work.
Okay, please, please, but foryour product design and your
services and your equipment thatyou need, make sure you have
all the equipment.
You're going to have to paymoney for that, and that may
even include equipment, like Ididn't even mention,
(22:42):
no-transcript.
You're a life coach and you wantsome official certification.
Or maybe you're a designer likeI said, some kind of designer
and you need some kind ofcertification.
Or you're some kind of tutorand you need to make sure you're
certified for something Right, whatever it is, make sure you
(23:03):
are certified.
So you may have to spend moneyon that.
Again, a lot of you don't needto get certified.
I did not need to get certifiedfor this role that I'm hosting
here, right For me as a businesscoach.
I did not need to get any othercertification.
I'd been in business for 20years when I started, right, so
(23:23):
I didn't need anything else.
So don't think that you needstuff.
Okay, so let's go through thesesix before I get to number
seven.
Again, it was personal help.
You may need books and legalsetup like your you know
accounting, your bookkeeping, someone to help you real quick
for an hour or two.
It could even be a studentthat's in accounting or
something you never know, okay.
(23:43):
Number three your domain andyour website platform.
So you need to get your domain, whatever that is For me, it was
KimberlyBrockcom.
For you, what is it for you?
And the website platform like?
Is it Squarespace, wix, shopify, wordpress, kajabi, what is it?
Number four is the design of thelogo and the website, so
someone to actually create itfor you and make it
(24:05):
aesthetically pleasing.
You may be able to do this inCanva.
Y'all, you can do it in Canva.
You can.
You can make basic logos andthings, but you can hire someone
on Fiverr or you can pay for adesigner.
So you may have to pay, depending on your business,
$3,000 to $5,000 for someone todo your logo and do your whole
website design, and that's okaybecause you want to have a great
presence.
I'm just telling you, noteveryone has to have it.
(24:27):
The most amazing out of thegate.
You can do a one-pager that youdesign in Canva and if you're a
service provider, you can startthat way, super simple, or on
Squarespace or Wix.
If you're a service providerand just start, it's like
20-something a month, okay, andthey have great templates for
you to design everything.
Number five all your equipmentand everything you need to
create your products andservices to make them sellable.
(24:47):
So this encompasses a lot, butthis is going to cost you money.
Whatever this is that you need, okay, to make your products or
services sellable.
Number six certifications andtrainings.
You may need morecertifications and trainings.
Okay, I did get some trainingcourses on coaching and things
like that, but I didn't do anyofficial certification.
(25:09):
Okay, number seven y'all.
To me, this is the mostimportant one besides the
personal help.
I think the personal help, spending money on that, is key,
and I also think that's numberone.
And I think number seven ismassively important to your
success.
Okay, this will save you somuch time, energy and money.
What do you think it is?
(25:30):
What do you think that I highlyrecommend you do at the
beginning of your business tosave you time, energy and money?
Well, if you said, hire a coachor hire a strategic coach, hire
a strategist, a strategic coach, hire a strategist you're right
(25:51):
.
This is why I do what I do.
I cannot bear it if I see newbusiness owners like you
flailing around thinking thatyou have to spend time, energy
and money doing things that youdon't need to be doing, and I
also cringe when I think thatyou are taking the long route
when I could just tell you howto take the short route and how
to take the more cost-effectiveroute and how to make moves that
(26:13):
build a sustainable business,not just a fly-by-night business
that you're like, oh you know,we'll see.
No, I'm trying to help youbuild a sustainable business.
You need a strategist in yourlife.
Okay, maybe you know somebody, maybe you have a mentor in your
(26:33):
life, a family member, a friend, someone who can help you and
guide you.
I'm telling you y'all, this isthe best money you will spend
and it could be in as little asan hour.
Okay, some of you think thatgetting a strategist or a coach
has to be this long-term.
You got to meet with them everysingle week for the whole year.
(26:55):
Yeah, there's some that you cando that, but that's not the
case for a lot of you.
You're solopreneurs, you'rebusy, you're just trying to get
this business off the ground.
You want to know what's thefastest way that you can start
achieving success.

(27:38):
want to make a bazilliongadillion dollars a month.
I mean, we all do.
Okay, so that's not the point.
The point is you only have somuch time, energy and money to
put into this business, and soif you've got a strategic code,
someone can guide you on thatand say don't go down this path.
This is the wrong way to go foryour type of business.
