(00:00):
Welcome back to show Joe your favorite podcast. We're back off the success of our Christmas
(00:18):
special. We're hitting up New Year's now. We've got me, Sarah, and Joe, the Joe. So Joe. And even
better than Joe, we've got a special guest who wants to introduce herself. Take it away. Hello.
(00:40):
Is me. I don't know how to do this. Yeah. Jenny's here. Better than me, huh? Okay. I see how
it's going. You know, my name is in the show title. We really your name's not in it. I hate to
break it to you. Hey, Jenny, what are you doing now for until forever? You ever wanted to host a
(01:03):
podcast? Sarah's the heart and soul. Oh, yeah. Joe's mom. She sure is the heart and soul. Learning
how much of a Grinch he was last time. I, that was my former teenage self. No, no one's a good
teenager. Teenagers just suck. Okay. Man, that's what we met. We all met each other when we were
(01:26):
at our most unlikable. I was pretty likable. People liked me. Well, you, I didn't think you
like, what? Okay. How about you, Jenny? Did you think Joe hated you at first?
I feel like I just never thought about you.
Hey, it's not negative. That is not a negative impression.
(01:49):
Oh, God. Well, but yeah, so Jenny here went to, well, technically, we all went to high school
together at one point. I just didn't know you guys until after I no longer attended,
but mutual friend groups. We went to the same college. You were like super smarty pants and I
was in the art department. Oh, I didn't know that. What? I went to the same school. We
(02:14):
definitely thought so. I could feel the friendship oozing out of this conversation. Okay. To be fair, I've forgotten everything about college, but I'm sorry. I should remember.
It's okay. My own teacher didn't remember me. Oh, my God. Jenny, what is your background with anime?
(02:47):
Been watching since I was a child. I think my first, okay, well, I don't know if Pokemon counts.
Pokemon is 100% counts. Oh, it does. I think so. It's an anime. Okay.
Straight up anime. I was watching anime when I was very young then. Okay. Sure. And I did the like
Saturday cartoons and to Nami and then I first watched Kimi Nitori. I think it's nice. And then
(03:12):
I like a mixture of Shoujo and Shounen. Nice. What's your favorite? Oh, God. Of all time.
I have a favorite Shoujo. Favorite Shoujo. Oh, I want to say, oh, but I can't. I would be lying. I was going to say Fruits Basket, but just because it was like,
it was like one of the first Shoujo's I ever watched. It's either Sailor Moon or Kimi Nitori.
(03:37):
Nice. Nice. Yeah, Kimi Nitori is really good. And I just, I mean, once I donned on me in our first episode that Angela Klayer was not a Shoujo, I was like,
okay, for real, we're going to do Kimi Nitori. And that's like Shoujo to tea, but like so good because it's not, I don't know.
Like it does the same thing that other Shoujo's do as far as like a lot of devices and stuff. I don't know. Something about it is just different.
(04:02):
It's just so sweet and just makes you go like, oh. It's nice and wholesome. Yeah.
Jenny's who I watch. We, like that's what I'm watching, what, like Hunter Hunter and Dungeon Mishie and those things with. So that's where I'm getting that.
And she doesn't watch any of the mech stuff though. I haven't, I haven't gotten you into gun to my.
I'm good without guns.
(04:24):
You good? Do you want to darling in the Franks?
No, I am also good without watching that.
Yeah. See, the mech is not.
No, I do. I really enjoy Code Geass. And that is a mech.
Guy with the weird eyeball. Well, he is voiced by Johnny Young Bosch in the dub.
I don't know. What's your stance on dub versus sub?
(04:45):
Your chump, if you watch dub.
No, there's some dubs that are really good. And I like back in the day, I would say.
Sailor Moon.
Sailor Moon.
Real great.
Thank, Rooney Kendrick had a good dub. Full metal alchemist.
Yeah.
(05:06):
Although that guy has since gotten in trouble.
Oh, yeah. Code Geass was also a good dub. And I feel like nowadays,
they're really high quality. So even if you.
Yeah, well, that's what they're not like totally changing the plot based off the dub.
Yeah.
That's what I did.
That's what they used to do. Yeah.
Well, I guess this is typically where we kind of jump into like what we've been doing
(05:31):
of which I've just been watching Godzilla movies.
Oh, OK.
Well, not the older ones. I'm not cool enough to like watch the old.
I'm basic. I watched like minus one and the like.
I haven't seen it yet.
King of the monsters and verses and then they.
(05:51):
Are they good? I haven't seen it yet.
They're fine. I mean, the minus one's cool because it's like the origin kind of like it's
right after World War Two Japan. So like a different setting versus like let's pretend
this is a Marvel movie, but with like a big.
Is that what it feels like?
I don't know the newer ones.
It's kind of like not my one, but like, I don't know, you know, Godzilla versus Kong and stuff.
(06:15):
I don't know. It doesn't necessarily feel like it brings anything new, although I do like it being
spoken in terms of like nature just because they're more animals and they're destroying
humanity, which I also love in a movie.
Sharon for Godzilla. What is your relationship with God? What are your feelings about Godzilla before
watching these movies? Are you like a big Zilla?
(06:36):
I know, not really. I remember the bad one where it has like babies in New York or something.
I don't know. I have like some cool posters of like aliens Godzilla and Kong like picked up,
but I don't have any strong feelings about the franchise really.
You know, because people assume that I love dinosaurs stuff because I love Jurassic Park,
(07:00):
but it's more so just the like eating people and like mother nature consequences that I like.
It's like Dino World or whatever.
Dino Topia. Dino Topia.
Do they eat people in that?
No, not really.
How do you feel about Dino Topia?
Dino before time.
The first is a real bummer. It's like kind of depressing, but I don't know.
(07:24):
They like lighten it up with the rest, right? So we've got like where there's freaking
musical numbers and stuff. I like the song Big Water where it's like it's really big, big, big,
big water. And it introduces chomper or whatever. So good.
(07:44):
How do you feel about the Disney animated movie Dinosaur?
I liked it. It's kind of uncanny valley. I will say like the animation
a little yikes on the lemurs, but I liked it. I like that we actually had like dinosaurs eating
each other in a children's film.
You were like so about dinosaur consumption.
(08:06):
Oh yeah, that's what I've been up to. How about you, Joe? Any more freaking Mecca on the agenda?
No, I didn't watch any of that. I need to watch the second Pat Labor movie and I haven't. So I have
been taking a little bit of a break. I watched the first two episodes of Acolyte, the Star Wars
thing. Yeah, yeah, yeah. What do you think? I've only watched the first two episodes. It seems fine
(08:26):
so far. Like, you know, I don't have like, I kind of just have like, all right, this is a show. It
looks pretty good. I kind of like everybody and we'll see what happens. But nothing's really
happened yet. So it's kind of hard for me to say either way. I think the first four and it's kind of,
it's fine. I like it more. It's fun. Like, Jedi is being around, which means more Jedi fights.
(08:47):
I like the little droids. I like her little weird droid that like she puts in her pocket.
Yeah. Yeah, but it's been good. I mean, that yeah, so I'm gonna I'm gonna watch that, I guess.
Is it is it already over? Is it coming out? No, I don't think so. It's coming out weekly.
All right. Well, I watched some of that. The other thing I watched was I watched the Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. Meantimehame, the animated one. Yes. I've heard good things. It was
(09:13):
very good. It was it like looks really cool because it's like animated in that style that is like
they're kind of like blocky. Yeah. It's like cel shaded. And then they have like they do the
skip frame rate thing that like spider-verse does where like, you know, like smoke effects and
things like that are at a different frame rate as everything else. And it looks really cool.
(09:33):
Nice. I like to take on the Ninja Turtles where they're like way more teen like, I think that's
really fun. They are supposed to be teenagers, right? So hard to. Yeah. But like, I've never
consumed anything Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. So I do not know how they're normally depicted.
They're normally depicted as like, I mean, they act like adults, I feel like in a lot of the TMNT
(09:56):
stuff, you know what I mean? This is like they more like they're more kid-ish, which is fun.
And it's like it's a lot goofier. It's very good. I just had a good time with it. It's not like
taking any of itself really seriously. As I think from what I've been able to tell from the franchise,
it should not. It seems like a more... Yeah. I mean, there are times when it's like you want,
(10:18):
like you want the turtles to seem cool. You want to look at that and be like, that's a cool guy.
You know what I mean? This is not like you pointed them and you're like, that's a cool guy.
This is like you pointed them and you're like, oh, yeah, that's like my friend Ronnie or whatever.
You know what I mean? Like, I don't like that kind of what if he was a turtle man?
And so yeah, they're they're kind of little gremlins. It's pretty good. I really enjoy it. I don't,
they're probably making another one, I'm guessing, or maybe not. I don't know. But they should because
(10:41):
they set up like a new person at the end. It was cute. How are you, Deffer? What have you been up to
since we... I've met you. What have you been watching? I haven't really been watching anything.
Okay, so I am mentally pooped out right now because I had to take like a really long test this week.
Ew. That I've been studying for like four months and it was really hard and I'm like, I probably failed.
(11:08):
No, you're super smart. No, we're all smart. No, no, no.
Don't let me in with you. Yeah, it was just like, at least I won't have to worry about it for at
least a couple of weeks. That's good. I attempted it. That's all that matters.
(11:31):
What's the last thing you watched? The last thing I watched. Yeah, or just whatever you want to talk
about. Whatever you want. It does not. I talk about Love Island sometimes, so it does not have to be
a popular coach. Shut up. Love Island. It's all good. Okay. I watched some of that and also Singles
(11:52):
Inferno and it's just brain rot, but it's great. Yeah. What is Singles Inferno? It's like the
Japanese version. Like the Asian Love Island, which I have on, well, I don't have Netflix right
now, but I've seen it. The problem is that it's like brain rot, but it's easy watching, but so
(12:13):
normally I have it playing while I'm doing something else. So if it's in subtitles, it's harder to do
that. But then if you watch those kind of things in dub, like I watched Physical 100 in dub and
it's wild, the voices we choose sometimes in dub, like Korean shows. Right. Cause you're super into
K-dramas. Is that right? Oh, no. I'm in the K-pop, but not K-dramas. They always bore me.
(12:39):
K-dramas take too long, but yeah, I'm watching, well, for this season, I'm watching Black Butler,
which is, it has a new season. This is like candy guys, right? I haven't watched it, but I feel like
it's full of pretty voice. Yeah, the art's really pretty. So what is like, okay, so it's a shonen,
right? Is it? I don't know. It's about a young boy, but I wouldn't consider it a shonen, though I guess
(13:07):
technically it is under the shonen category. Cause is it just like, I try to think.
What happened? I don't know anything about this. Yeah, like Butler, you have tea parties. I just
know it's like a fancy lad in his Butler who's like a hot, tall guy. I pass. It's about like a young
(13:29):
boy who has a Butler who's a demon. There it is. Sebastian, right? That's his name. Yes,
they formed a contract because the little boy's family got murdered and he wants to figure out
who murdered them. And so he forms a contract with this Butler. Now this demon in order to like
find out, but it's like a lot of not plot stuff. Like there'll just be random things that go on
(13:56):
and it's not really like going towards the overarching plot. Is it, have you read the manga
too? Yes, but I haven't caught up. Is it a killer or is that part of the manga too? To have those like
like, like, oh, it's just part breaks. Yeah, it's just like about his life. And then I've also
been watching Windbreaker. How is that? The guys in that look hot too. So I'm like, maybe I
(14:23):
it's purely fighting. If you enjoy, if you enjoy, and it has good choreography. So like they actually
do fighting styles and they animate like how other people with the iPads, right? We love iPads.
Oh yeah, there is a guy with an iPad. Yes. You told me I wouldn't like this show.
(14:47):
Yeah, just because it the underlying stuff, you don't think too hard on it. They don't. There's
not so much. Yeah, this is just like a watch to enjoy kind of thing. Yeah, don't only watch this
to learn and the themes. I can't watch it and enjoy it as impossible. The first, I guess,
(15:09):
arc, the first season covers like this kid who the like antagonist for this season has a dumb
view point. And it's like, I guess because he's a child, but also a child would know this already.
So I feel like you get frustrated that I'm like, this is his whole reason for blah, blah, blah.
(15:30):
Mainly this series is just about friendship and fighting. That's it. So is it like Borderline's
boys love where it's like people are together? Is it like they're fighting to work out their
feelings for each other? Is it like a Naruto Sasuke thing? No, it does. It does do the shonen
(15:51):
thing where it can be inter no, it can't be. But it's just like guys get real close and they're
like, we're real good buds together. All the boys hang out. There's no girl. At least we think to
the imagination. It never confirms anything. But there is two people who I'm just like, literally
(16:12):
he threw away his life for you. What else does that mean? That's so good. I was like those
things where it's like it's the it's the you're gay because you like men. I'm gay because I hate
women. We're not the same. And it's like the shonen one is that way. It's just like women don't
exist in this story. So it's so true. Yes. So many females are hardly an element at all.
(16:39):
Yeah. You and the boys slugging it out in the back. Yeah, that's like there's this
anime based off this Otomegi in the anime play because it's not in English, but the anime is
called Stride Prince. And it's kind of like this weird parkour relay race with these dudes. And
then the girl is like the manager, but it's like super like a friendship makes the you know, makes
(17:03):
us better competitors. And like it's super like, oh, I could see this going a different
way. Like I'm interested to see how the Otomegi goes because it seems more boys lovey than like
her having a relationship with them. Yeah, that opening. All right. Reminds me, is it like that
one show where she's like one show kiss him, not me or something? Oh, I haven't watched that yet.
(17:28):
You'll love the premise of this show, Joe. Maybe it will cover at some point. Basically,
this girl is like a bigger nerdy girl that no one like pays attention to. And she's super into boys
love and one of her favorite boys love character like dies. And so she goes into depression and
stops eating and loses a bunch of weight and comes back to school. And everyone's like, whoa,
she's so hot now. And like all the guys are into her. But she's like, I like boys love. So I
(17:52):
really thought guys like be into each other than be into me. It sounds like I would hate that.
Yeah, so I probably fall. I haven't watched it, but I'm very familiar with the premise.
Although she has purple hair. I'm so yeah. Yeah. Maybe it's not that purple here.
(18:15):
Confirmed best color enough to make up for any other shortcomings.
Should we jump into this romance packed season one finale? Yeah.
The finale of the one. Okay, I have an update. Oh, let's do just in the update.
(18:36):
Breaking news. My mom watched the first episode or watched part of the first episode of the live
action comedies. Okay. Apparently it sucks. Okay, well, I'm just proud of your mom for trying.
Why is she above and beyond? Well, she watched a dub of it. So there's like 80 are and then the
(18:59):
clip I watched it was it was pretty bad. Well, the problem is that shows you causing high.
K dramas are like cringy because they try to reenact everything as if it was the
animation still, but does not work in live action. Yeah, like it was the clip where
they get the seating arrangements and like saw it was sitting somewhere and they're like,
(19:19):
oh, nobody wants to sit next to her and then cause it has like all sit next to her or whatever.
But like in live action when people are talking about how they don't want to sit next to somebody,
they just seem mean instead of cartoony. So it's kind of just like she's just actually getting
buoyed by these people. Yeah. And also causing high is not that hot. Unfortunately, damn it.
But he's so cute in the anime ripped to the live action came in. I would not adapt this.
(19:44):
I would not adapt. I mean, I've watched like a couple of K dramas. One was like a zombie one
that was actually pretty good. We're all dead. I think it's called recommend. But there's some
good ones. But I don't think the show Joe ones typically are winners. It seems hard to adapt
because like part of the charm is that it's very cartoony at times. It's also kind of mundane
(20:08):
things, but it's like nice to watch in not real life terms because you could just do these things
yourself in real life. But then watching these things are just pretty mundane in live action
aren't is charming. Yeah. Well, it's also like, like I'm sure it's easy to adapt in terms of like
you can recreate shots from it because there's something like inherently that complicated
going on. But also that's not the draw of the show. I feel like ripped to that another live
(20:34):
action adaptation. It's not good. Rip. Anyway, what is good is the last three episodes of
community today. Okay, we are finishing off season one here. This is the season one finale. We
start with episode 23, which is called the two of them. You know, as per usual, I'm going to read
this out. You guys can interrupt me. It's like bull appointed. Sawaka wakes up on Christmas day
(20:54):
to a gift sat next to her bed in it is some paper, a mechanical pencil and some lead and then a note
saying don't be shocked, but there is no Santa, which is horrifying, awful opening. This show
really just like grabbed all of the Sarah energy and put it in. Hey, what? Don't recommend to kids.
Oh my God. I agree with that. She's 15. Yes. She already knows her father is slightly
(21:20):
insane. Joyless. Joyless. Her dad can't get over her growing up. That's why. Yep. Needs to come to
terms. Oh my God. Santa's fun. Okay. Wait till he finds out she went on a date. Game over.
Sawaka was more excited to realize that her phone is real and last night really happened.
She gets up and thanks her dad for the gifts and he starts to like be all sad and like break the
(21:45):
news that Santa isn't real, but she leaves before he could finish. We learned that at school today
is the closing ceremony and they're going to start winter break after this. We cut to Joe talking
to some boys about how weird it was that Sawaka came to karaoke, the karaoke after party last night
and then sang one song and then immediately left. So I guess she did make it to the after party
(22:06):
after all. So good for her. Then they remember that maybe she showed up with Kazehaya and Ayana
hears this and covers for Kazehaya by saying that she made him wait for her, which I don't know.
Is this true? Do you guys think this is true? No. No. She's covering so these guys don't like
pest her into it and make it a whole thing again like it was when she accidentally confessed her
(22:29):
feelings before she even knew she liked him. Remember like episode two or three? I do remember
that. We don't want that. But like do you think she's like she just like told him to do that anyway?
It's like a pre-cover. Like do you think she physically did these things? I understand that
she's covering for him. No, I mean technically she called her first, but no, I don't think so.
Okay. Sawaka enters looking as cursed as ever and says hi to the boys. Then Kazehaya comes in
(22:52):
and we get a flashback to last night where Sawaka is explaining the gift mix up to Kazehaya,
but he wants to keep the gift despite the swap. Back in regular time, he says hi to her and she
notices that he's wearing a necktie and is amazed. It's like a dog barking. Yeah. Yeah. It's you know
just like when she was fixated when he had that bed head are all puppy loved up you you know like
(23:16):
become so enthralled by them that any minor change is like a new way to see them and that's exciting.
So this is like a new thing she's getting to see really with the necktie. This is did you guys have
crushes like this? Is this what it's like? I don't think boys styled the cells any differently
like in middle school or high school. Yeah. Notice. Wow. As you've said in the past,
(23:40):
not enough fashion options for dudes. That's true. That's true. Major complaint. It's pretty bad.
Let's see. Their teacher comes in and it looks like their old teacher is in his back,
but actually he's here to explain that he's not going to be their home or teacher anymore because
he's going to run his wife's family's brewery instead. Let's go. The students gossip about him
(24:02):
because they all thought he was sick this whole time, but apparently they think he's a gold digger
now. So there's that. Anyway, pins their new homeroom teacher and nobody seems happy about it.
Nope. They have to walk single file to the closing ceremony on the way. Sawako sees Karumi who sticks
her tongue at her as she passes, which is great. Glad we got to see Karumi before the end.
(24:24):
Doesn't it feel like this feels like the last episode where we're going to peek at everyone
the last time? Dude, last episode felt like the last episode. Yeah. They're winding down over and over.
We get a lot of long shot of snow covered scenery around the school as the piano music
plays in the background. Sawako comments that she had a lot of good memories this
(24:47):
year and has experienced many things for the first time. After class, Chizu suggests that they get
food somewhere. Sawako realizes that this will be the last time that she'll see Kazehaya before
the break. She goes to grab her coat at the same time that Kazehaya does because he's about to
go do something. And she tries to say thank you for the year, but she gets too nervous. So instead,
(25:08):
Kazehaya says bye-bye. She's like a child. And she says have a happy new year. The out of restaurant
Sawako shows Chizu and Ayane her new phone. They help her set up an email account. They tell her
that her name, her email address should be long, such as spam email. And she goes with Sawako.
I don't think so. No. I mean, like they used to do like random generators. And so maybe that was
(25:33):
true back then. Yeah. I don't think it's true now because they just like pull it from registers
and stuff. Let's see. Yeah. So the name she goes with is Sawako dot not dot Sotako dot
yeah 1231. So good. Which is super long. Very good. She's like this will clear up everything.
Chizu notes that Sawako's birthday is on New Year's Eve. And she and Ayane exchange a look.
(25:56):
Sawako asks if they can hang out during the break and is shocked and relieved to learn that,
of course, they're going to hang out because they're all friends. Chizu says that she always
visits a shrine on New Year's with Ryu and that they should all come with her.
Sawako is excited and wants to go. She immediately calls her parents to see if she can go. And her
mom says, yeah, that she's cool with it. But make sure to ask your dad when he gets home,
(26:18):
but he already feels bad for Christmas. So it's going to be a yes. So yeah, you basically can go.
Ayane tells Sawako that she should invite Kazehaya to go. Sawako doesn't know how to text him yet.
So she has to call him on the phone instead. She is very stressed about this, but gets it together
and is able to call him. He's at karaoke and he kind of looks like he's having a bad time.
He leaves to take the phone call and agrees.
(26:42):
Because he's not with her. I think his friends just kind of suck. I don't know.
Yeah, Joe's annoying as hell. Like, yeah, he takes it. Yeah. Like, Ryu isn't there either.
Like, I don't think Ryu hangs out with these guys. It's my understanding of these next
couple episodes. Can't blame him. Yeah. He leaves or he like leaves the karaoke room to take the
phone call and agrees to go and says he's looking forward to it. They all go home.
(27:05):
She's on a scheme while Sawako walks off. There was an unannounced time skip, which like really
messed me up the first time I was watching this because all of a sudden it's New Year's Eve.
Like, it is the day of self. It bothered me. Yeah. Okay. All right. Wow.
I'm the one having to take notes about everything. Okay. I take I make notes. I just don't.
(27:26):
This is not meticulous as you. But yeah, because I have to make a summary. I guess I have to make
a summary. It's New Year's Eve and Sawako is getting ready to go. Her dad says it's great
that she's going out with her friends and Sawako thinks that Chizu and Ayane are her friends,
but like, are Ryu and Kazehaya, are they her friends too? Question mark, question mark, question
mark. The doorbell rings and it's Chizu and Ayane. They're early and they insist on going up to
(27:51):
Sawako's room. They proceed to give her a makeover, which involves plying a makeup and pulling
her hair back and adding a clip. Sawako almost cries, but they have to stop her because it'll
make her makeup run. Yeah, this is funny. Waterproof mascara. My ladies, come on. I know.
This is when did they invent that? It's definitely been around since 2009. Well before that.
(28:13):
Is it more expensive? Do you think they just can't afford it? I don't think the price is different at
all. The three of them start to walk to the shrine after a while. Chizu and Ayane stop and
say that this is the spot. So they're going to take off. Enjoy your time with Kazehaya.
They tell her to give them all the GT details later and take off. Sawako is freaked out by all
this because she was not expecting any of this at all. But she keeps on the path until she runs
(28:37):
into Kazehaya who's just waiting there. He's stunned at how good she looks and she tells him
that the others aren't coming. He turns and tells her that they should get going. Sawako tells us
that it's 30 minutes till the new year as we cut to credits. How good she looks. How cute she looks.
(28:58):
Dude, I almost cried when she had that makeup on. When they were just like happy birthday,
I was like, oh, friendship. I know. It was so nice.
This ever happened to y'all? Your friends ever do your makeup? No.
No. I can barely do my own makeup. Yeah, same.
My mom would do my makeup for me sometimes. She's like an aggressive handler of everything.
(29:26):
She would make me cry if she French braided my hair as a kid.
So she was not as delicate as they were. She was cute. Although I feel like seeing her eyebrows
is kind of weird. It is a little weird. But this is also making me just go like Sawako,
you could have just changed your hair. Like you didn't need a perm. You could have just
done a different hairstyle. This whole time. Yeah, I would have fixed a lot of problems.
(29:49):
A hair clip would have solved everything, it turns out. Such a simple solution.
Yeah. So Ryu is not hanging out with them, Mikaerio. Does he hang out with them?
I mean, he's on the baseball team with some of them, I think. So he probably has to hang out
with them more because I hide those typically. Or do you mean the boys? Or do you mean?
Yeah, the boys, the karaoke boys. Yeah. I can't see him singing karaoke if I'm being honest.
(30:14):
I see him just not going because he's not going to participate.
The clip where Sawako was singing her song when Joe was talking about it was so funny.
She's like a dirge. Like what? What did it sound like? Yeah.
Yeah. Well, yeah, I feel like I've seen that in other anime's where it's like there's some like
old traditional songs that you can sing instead of like super hip for rent ones.
(30:39):
Which is funny because I would imagine maybe she doesn't listen to music a lot. So she's
not familiar with any of the newer stuff. Why did she immediately leave?
Why'd she show up to sing one song and then just leave?
She's probably not to get adopted at the middle of the night running home.
The freaking down on a driver is a lady. Why did he?
Because then all the boys would be like, oh, are you walking her home? Huh?
(31:01):
Does he care about this? Like is he trying to keep this under wraps? I don't think he is.
Well, maybe he is because she was so distressed by the prospect of his reputation being affected by
his involvement with her that he doesn't want her to have to worry about
any more rumors like that. Maybe. Yeah, I think he doesn't care,
but maybe he's being considerate to her. Yeah. Yeah. Or like she wouldn't be ready and it'll
(31:25):
ruin it if like everyone keeps putting romantic pressure on them.
Oh, well, bad news about these next two episodes. They're putting a lot of romantic pressure on her.
Yes. Well, at least it's the people who know her best and not rando ass people.
That's yeah, that's true. That's true.
Well, I'd like the scene where she said that one word for like 30 seconds,
(31:46):
which she was asking if she could hang out with. Oh, yeah.
Which is like stuttering. Yeah. It's really cute. I can relate to her
awkwardness and I like their little group dynamic between the three of them.
There's a really funny, cheesy part in the next episode, I think.
But yeah, they're just a good little friend group and it sucks to have your birthday be so close to Christmas.
(32:12):
True. I have a note that Sawako has a great knit poncho. It's very good.
It's so cute. I mean, I said it in the past, but she actually does have pretty cute clothes.
Like they're pretty conservative, but like very feminine clothes.
Yeah, the poncho is cute. I was going to say, I guess because it's New Year's, but like
(32:33):
they're meeting. They're meeting up this place at 11 30. That's so late.
Yeah. They're really cutting it close.
Gathering. Yeah. Exhausting. Just thinking about it. High schoolers.
Yeah, that's crazy. I think this is the only shrine in town.
I don't know how big the town is. Probably. They live in Hokkaido.
They live in Hokkaido, I think, which I guess. I don't know how big that is, but.
(32:55):
Maybe the closest. Yeah. Well, we do see, well, we do see at some point,
several people from their school. So maybe it is the closest one.
Because yeah, they are at risk of running into people.
All right, we want to get to the next episode. Yeah. Episode 24 is called a birthday.
The two of them are walking in the snow to the shrine.
Kazehaya is like several steps ahead of her for some reason.
(33:19):
And Sawako is several steps behind. It's because she's so cute. He can't handle it.
He was honest to her to see how embarrassed he is. Oh, wait. Oh, sorry.
Before you go on, I just remembered when she's told Kazehaya that they weren't coming. I was like,
isn't he going to think that she'd set this up so that. Or get started.
(33:44):
I mean, I guess he knows her well enough that she would not have the force
site to plan all this out or the audacity or perceived audacity on her part to
try to have him alter herself. I think he probably would have preferred that, right? Wouldn't that
be cool? Well, yes, he would. But like, you know, he knows what he's in for. He's going to be a
(34:09):
slow, slow process. And he can't get his hopes up too high or he's going to be calm and patient.
Anyway, they're walking really far apart. Sawako thinks to herself that he isn't looking at her,
but she can't bring herself to look at him either. They start to walk up the shrine steps,
but Sawako slips and almost falls. But don't worry, Kazehaya is here to catch her.
(34:29):
They gaze into each other's eyes, but instead of kissing, all they do is get awkward.
They're not going to kiss. Come on. Come on, it's framed so perfect.
I was waiting for them to both fall and then have the scene where they're just like on top of each
other. Yeah. But then I was like, oh, dang it.
(34:49):
That's a separate one for sure. Yeah.
He's got good grip on them. He's got good balance. He's an athlete. Good balance.
OK, but like she keeps slipping, but her shoes are like boots too. She should have grip too.
What she do? Style boots. They probably don't. They're not like hiking boots. They probably don't.
But it's probably like leather boots that like are pretty smooth on the bottom.
(35:13):
Yeah. I have boots that are basically it's like a tile.
It's slippery. Yeah. Yeah. Don't assume women's shoes are like make any sense.
It's the bottom of your shoe. It doesn't need to be stylish. It's the bottom.
Well, I mean, but style normally the like grip, the track of a shoe is incorporated as like a
(35:35):
pattern on the bottom of the shoe. So it does contribute to the style.
But I think it's the bottom of your shoe. Well, she's wearing like riding boots and riding boots.
Typically, they have the heel and I don't think they normally have that much grip otherwise.
You think they're made for this like they make women's boots so that they can slip and fall and
get caught by your boyfriend. This is like in the design docs. Joe thinks cause I hide hot.
(36:02):
I think she thinks he's hot. Actually, I know she thinks he's hot. She talks about it all the time.
No, she doesn't comment on his appearance. Say that word. Oh my god. Yeah. Right. OK.
Anyway, in the bushes nearby, Ioni, Chizu and Ryu are watching and Ioni has the same reaction
as me as she crushes a stick in her fist. I've never felt more seen. I am like, yeah,
(36:25):
I'm the same. You're fucking kidding me. Right. Yeah. She tells Chizu to call in their plan B
and Ryu asks them what the hell they're all doing here. Cause I hide gets a phone call.
It's Chizu. She's talking so loud that cause I hide can hear her in the bushes. So Ioni has to
like tackle her so she will quiet down. She's so dumb. I love Chizu. Chizu apologizes that they
(36:49):
all canceled except for Sawako and then says that Sawako might be confused right now, but she's
going to leave her in his hands and then hangs up. At this point, Sawako understands what her
friends plans were. Kazehaya tells her that they should go get some amazake, which apparently is
like a drink made by fermented rice. There is none and there's not alcoholic and alcoholic
(37:16):
options typically, I guess. Do we think this is good? This doesn't like fermented rice.
It's sweet sake. Okay. Okay. What would non-alcoholic sake taste like? I imagine it would taste like
shiitake if you guys have ever had that. It's like the Korean version of like a sweet rice drink.
(37:39):
Usually not alcoholic, but I guess you can make it. Yeah. I'm hoping the one they had was not alcoholic.
Oh, I hope it was. They should have just gotten boozed up a little bit.
That would have solved everything in this episode, honestly. Joe, that will, I mean,
and some enemies are going to watch you'll see that is like a thing where it's like, oh, it's liquor
(38:00):
chocolate and then somehow the girl gets drunk off chocolate with liquor.
And then she gets all flusy, goosey and like plants a kiss on someone that she never would
have done and they're like, wow, you're in a lightweight, right? Like it's freaking chocolate.
Yup. That's the thing that happens. Can you imagine drunk Sawako? That would be so good.
(38:22):
Um, I feel like I say a bunch of boring stuff. Apologize even more profusely.
That would be good. She'd probably just like, what do you think she's going to do?
I feel like she would just boldly tell ghost stories or something.
Ghost stories. I really want to know what drunk Kazehaya would do. I know nothing about this guy.
What's he going to do? I think he'd just be even more blushy than he already is.
(38:43):
Oh, God. So cute. No, it'd be so cute. Do you think he would literally get into a fistfight
with pin like he would throw a punch? No, 100 percent. He wants to be the pin so bad.
Well, we, we learned, oh, wait, no, this is from the next episode.
(39:05):
All I was going to say is that we learned that pin is nose Toru, Ryu's older brother.
He really is entwined with their lives against Kazahaya's Lil. He's probably had to grow up
with this dude. So annoying. He's surrounded by annoying people, Joe and pin.
Okay, that's not, he doesn't have to be around Joe's, but he just chooses to be out of that.
(39:27):
He's in his freaking classroom. Small town. And Joe doesn't seem to take no for an answer.
We're about to get to that. Let's see. So they're going to go get this drink.
More importantly, he starts to walk next to her as they go because I, you know, he figured it out.
I got a cheese to celebrate their success and Ryu is like, oh, this is what we're doing.
That's pretty slick. Then they see Joe at the shrine being an idiot.
(39:48):
I only realizes that Joe might see Kazahaya and ruin everything.
Joe starts to catch sight of Kazahaya, but I only and she's a roll up on him before he can do
anything. I only gets all buddy buddy with him and asks him where the rest of the guys are.
And he's like, oh, they went to a comedy show. So that means that they're not going to be a
problem. My note here is that Joe sucks. Joe. Okay. I didn't really have a problem with Joe
(40:13):
until this episode. I was like, Joe, can you not be this person? Yes. He, oh God, poor Ayane.
I just if if he was like a real person, he would all the girls in class would hate him
because he'd be trying to hit on every single one of them. Yes. Yeah.
Ayane like hooks arms with him or whatever. She's taken one for the team.
(40:36):
And she. Yeah. So like, I guess hold him in place. I don't really know why she does this.
I guess because he's just going to be like, ooh, she's glabbed on to me. I'm going to stay put and
try and win her over. I think I wrote this note because there was a one point he's like, oh,
she's like has my arm over here. Maybe I'll like brush against her boo or something.
What? Yep. That's a thing in your freaking in the like a lot of shonen stuff. I feel like
(41:04):
shonen etchi where it's like they take note of things like that. A boobs to think about.
That's fair. I mean, listen, you can think about boobs. You're just like someone brushing up against
you is not hot, dude. I'm sorry. That's probably just an accident. That doesn't count if it's an
accident. It also doesn't count if they clearly don't like you or just doing this to keep you
(41:26):
busy. Oh, he's too dumb to know that least favorite character, maybe in the show so far.
Well, he's sticking around for this episode a little bit. He recommends that they all go get
Amazake together and Ion is like, no, I hate it. And then Ryu is like left to despair because he
can't get any because I guess he really wants it. Really wants it. It's all he can say.
(41:46):
Amazake. Kazehaya and Sawako get Amazake together. The server calls them a couple and Sawako
gets all embarrassed. Kazehaya drinks some and announces that this might be the first time he's
ever liked it. Sawako tells him that she's happy to have witnessed a first for him. But then he's
like, well, actually, you've like witnessed a lot of firsts for me, like coming to a shrine alone
(42:07):
with somebody and like buying a girl a cell phone charm. And oh, it's the first time I've ever worn
a belly warmer too. And Sawako is stunned and horrified at the thought of him wearing that.
But she's happy to think that he might have accepted any gift, not just a good one. Yeah,
he's wearing that right now, which seems high. I don't like I never get cold.
(42:28):
He put a hand warmer in it too. Like a little one of those little pocket ones.
Yeah, it just seems like I've never been cold. I mean, like, man, my stomach's really cold.
Like it's the hottest part of your body. I feel like if you keep your stomach warm,
then it warms up the rest of your body. That's true. Keep the vital organs warm.
That is not true. I do not believe that. Like my parents, I remember when I was a kid,
(42:50):
my parents always buy me these jackets that were like, like too heavy in the stomach or like the
body, the torso. And I would be like sweating and then I would be cold on my extremities. And I'm
like, why did you guys get me this? Like what's going on? My mom would give me big, like puffy
jackets, like the one Joe's wearing. I'd be like, I'm not wearing that. I don't want to look fat.
Because I was like, this is so big. I was like, it's a style. That's fair. That's fair.
(43:14):
I don't like how they move. Like I don't like the sound that they make with all your arms.
Yeah. Yeah. It's like, I like knit stuff. Yeah.
Oh, I asked if she set up her email account. She has and she's going to send him a message
that he can get her contact. She types out a message and sends it as cause a high says that
he regrets not getting her number earlier. He gets the message and reads it and it reads,
(43:34):
thank you for everything you've done for me this year. I'm very happy now. So she said the thing
that I'm supposed to say when they left school in text message form. He reads her email address
and realizes that the 12 31 is the date for December 31st. He asks her when her birthday is
and she's like, Oh, it's today as the clock strikes 11 45 PM for some reason. Cause a higher
(43:59):
tells her happy birthday and says that if he had known, he would have brought a gift. It's very
funny that the clocks like the clock strikes like bells ring, but it's 11 45. I guess they got a
gift. People have had something to get their, I don't know, get ready to celebrate. I don't know
do people know they're doing the prayer stuff after the fact. Um, I don't know. Maybe there's
(44:24):
you line up at the shrine or something. Yeah. Maybe it's just that makes sense.
It's just funny because I like, I thought he's like, and she's like, Oh, it's today. And then
about strikes and I'm like, dude, you missed it. That's so funny. But it turns out he did not miss
it. Not rooting for his failure. Oh, come on. It's a good moment. That's like crazy. That's so
much. It's not like I like wanted him to get like owned. I just think it's like a very dramatic
(44:48):
thing to realize you missed a thing by like an instant, you know? Okay, fine. Just me. Uh,
so it says,
so it says she's already gotten a gift of him from him sharing all these firsts.
Uh, Sawako is happy that she could turn 16 with him. Yeah. 16. Uh, cause I high asked Sawako
(45:11):
what she was like as a kid and she says that she was ordinary. He says no, like seriously,
tell me everything chronologically please. No, he was just like, if it's hard for you to
like summarize, then just start from the bottom. Yeah. I think it's hard to get her to just flow
(45:31):
with conversation. So she needs a lot of prompting. So he's just, you know, helping her get to the
point of handing out that information. I mean, she does. She does tell them everything chronologically.
I was born in a hospital weighing three grams. 30. It was like 30,000 grams or something.
(45:52):
Oh, three kilograms. I said, yeah, three kilograms. Yeah, three kilograms. I looked at
up 6.6 pounds. That's such a small bb. She should have been three grams. Should have been tiny.
Thank you for making that calculation for us. Yes. She starts giving stories from her youth,
(46:13):
like a time when her cousin called her a weird name as a kid and also like made her get drinks for
her. I don't know. I don't know what that is. I feel like it's got to be some kind of either
mythological creature or story because I've heard it before or it's like a type of doll.
People have called her that before as well. So it's something creepy, I think. Yeah. All right.
(46:35):
And then she starts talking about how she would use to play a one man jump rope and one man volleyball
and one man some other sports. Speed. She plays speed. She played one man speed.
Partway through, Saloko realizes that this all sounds depressing. Yeah.
Kazehaya reassures her that it's actually great that she can find fun in anything.
(46:57):
Saloko keeps talking and gets all the way up to the events of Episode One.
We get flashbacks of her moments with Kazehaya. She says that this year was more complicated,
would take more time to explain, and Kazehaya smiles. The episode ends.
So they're hanging out. They're hanging out. They're exchanging stories.
(47:18):
She's learned, I feel like nothing about Kazehaya. I know. We need to learn more about him, please.
This is fun. Like trip down memory lane. I found a lot of those recently in a couple
of episodes. I feel like. Yes, right. Each one feels like the last episode of the season because
it keeps like reflecting. And it was just super funny how Cheez-Ewan Ayane or just like we got
(47:41):
a spy on her and we got to make it perfect. And then Ryu's just like, I want to go home.
Yes. That poor boy. Yes. He has dragged around a lot. I mean, I wonder before, I hope we get to
see how Ayane and Cheez-Ewan became friends. But I wonder before Cheez-Ewan had Ayane as a friend,
if she had any close girlfriends or if it was just her Ryu and if she's still dragged around
(48:07):
like this or if it was more like, let's just let me just come to your house and eat your ramen and
play your video games and change the dynamic. I think I guess I'll say this later. All right.
Do you want to get into the next episode? Do you have anything else? I have it. Episode the
season one finale of Kiwi Itadoke is called a new year. We pick up from last episode. Sawako says
(48:32):
she wants to be a different person next year and Kazehaya says that she's already changed a lot
for the better this year. Sawako starts crying, but tries to fight it back and set it on as her
makeup. Yeah, look into the light girl. That's how you slow down. You dry out them tears.
Kazehaya says that even her first impression was good. She smiled at him and he wanted to see
(48:53):
that smile from her again, but didn't for a long time. Then he says she surprised him with her
appearance today and Sawako apologizes for freaking him out. He's like, no, that's not what I meant.
Oh, but he doesn't say what he meant. He doesn't say what he meant.
Mary says what he means. Just gestures at what he means. Punk. Sawako thinks back to when Ayane asks
(49:16):
asked her why she wanted to look good after meeting Kirumi and decides that now she has an answer.
Kazehaya thinks to himself that Sawako is even cuter than he thought she would be.
We cut to Ryu looking over at Joe and Ayane locking arms. Ayane looks like she wants to die.
Ryu asks Chizu how long they're going to be doing this and she's like, oh, I don't know,
(49:38):
whatever, Joe gets sick of Ayane, I guess. Ryu sighs and announces that he's leaving to give
some amazake. Chizu tries to stop him and he turns to tell Joe that he ruined his jacket by
standing too close to the fire because all the little sparks on it melted his eye. How did he
not notice? Dude, he's trying to feel a boob, all right? He's one singular thing on his mind.
(50:05):
Even though he mostly is just standing there, honestly, he's just standing there smiling like
an idiot. He's not doing anything. Oh my gosh, they're not even talking. They're just talking.
They just look like she's a tummy ache. He's such a loser. Yeah, Joe, am I right? I already added
the little thing at the end of last episode where you said I'm better than this guy, so
(50:27):
that's already out there. See, Chizu is bummed because they haven't gotten to do the shrine yet.
Ayane tells her to go after him, said she's the one who brought him here in the first place.
Chizu catches up with Ryu and scolds him for leaving. She's like, why can't you be more friendly?
I know. What if you call me Chi and he refuses? And she's like, oh, but it would make you smile.
(50:49):
And he's like, I don't think any of this was necessary. No matter how Sawako acts or who
they run into, Kazehaya is going to get his way anyway, so you all can relax. You don't have to
be doing this. And Chizu's like, oh, but I kind of enjoyed watching them. She wants to know what
happens. Ryu counters by saying that it's sort of ridiculous that they're all worried at all.
(51:11):
They seem to be doing just fine, and they turn to see Kazehaya and Sawako standing next to each
other in the crowd ahead of them. Ryu turns to leave and Chizu's like, no, you're staying here
with me. It strikes midnight. Sawako and Kazehaya wish each other a happy new year.
She gets happy new year texts from Ayane and Chizu, and then she texts them back.
I guess it's here that I'm like, hey, do what do we think Ayane thinks about Chizu and Ryu?
(51:35):
But she has to know, right? Because like that seems obvious. Yeah, 100 percent.
But like we don't... She knows that Ryu's probably... Well, I guess we don't explicitly see it, but I
think she probably knows that Ryu likes her and that she's just totally oblivious to it.
But also, Chizu just had her heart broken, so there's, I don't think, any agenda currently
for those two. And Ayane... Do we think she for sure knows that Ryu likes her?
(51:59):
I want to say she doesn't. Well, I guess technically Sawako is the only one who...
Yeah, Sawako knows because he said it. I feel like she might not, because like the way she's
like, oh, you should go get him is not like a... I don't know. Ayane is like omniscient, though. She knows
everything. Yeah, but I feel like she's been kind of like unease or like doesn't really understand
(52:19):
what their relationship is, the whole show, you know what I mean? Like when they go,
like when they go get ramen and then she goes into Ryu's room, Ayane's like, well, this is kind of
weird. Yeah, I think it's like, Ayane's really good at observing people and that's why she
can pick up on things, but she doesn't know how to read Ryu because I guess they're not that close.
(52:40):
And so maybe she just thinks like, oh, they grew up together and this is just how they are.
Yeah, we don't really see any Ryu to Ayane direct conversations, I feel like. They're all talking
in the same group, but they're not talking to each other. Well, I guess it goes back to like,
when Sawako was thinking like a couple of episodes ago, like is Ryu my friend? I don't know the answer
to that. Yeah, they're friends. I mean, I mean, they aren't like a generic sense, but like, I don't
(53:03):
know if they would like hang out together. I don't know. It's person to person to determine what friend
means to them. Like my mom would be like, oh, you're friends with those girls in the cross-country
team, right? I was like, uh, we saw each other every day, I guess. But I wouldn't call them friends.
I feel like it's people who are friends or people. Well, they are hanging outside of school a lot
(53:27):
together. So I guess that does count. Yeah. But like, I don't know if he talks to her when they
hang out. You know what I mean? They were just not seeing. Well, he just doesn't talk to anyone.
That's true. He doesn't really talk to anyone. He wasn't that interested in talking to Joe either.
They did when they were at his room and like going through the yearbook and stuff. It seemed like
she like kind of teasing him asking about like, oh, what do you think of this? A roomy girl.
(53:53):
Like that kind of. Yeah. But he was kind of not playing ball with that. You know what I mean?
No, but she tried. I guess she tried. I mean, I'm not saying they're not. They're like enemies
already. I don't know if they're really solidified. Tees like yeah. Because I high as. But it also
doesn't seem like Rio likes Joe all that much either. And they run into him and he doesn't
like say anything. No one has. He has his own parents as we see. All right, let's see.
(54:22):
Sawako and Kazahaya do the shrine thing. They exit down the side and the stairs are all slippery.
Kazahaya offers a hand to Sawako and gently guides her down.
Ryu tells Chizu that his brother will visit on New Year's Day with his fiance and Chizu looks at him
and says, you really don't remember her name, do you? It's Haruka, dude. Yeah, he's like,
(54:46):
oh, she got me. Then she says that she'll stop by. They do the shrine thing and Chizu tells him
if anything ever happens to him, she'll be there to comfort him. I guess is the closest thing he's
gonna get. Kazahaya and Sawako get fortunes. He gets a most auspicious sign of fate. Her fortune
(55:08):
is an ominous sign of fate. But her love connection says that she's met the best, so don't hesitate.
Kazahaya looks at her fortune and says that actually getting bad luck fortunes is so rare
that some people say it's actually good luck. Sawako ties her fortune to a tree as per tradition,
I guess. Sawako... Yeah, that's a common thing. What? Oh, in Japan. Yeah. In anime. I'm talking,
(55:32):
like a lot of people listen to this, don't necessarily watch that much anime. We're talking
to your mom directly. Other people don't either. I'm assuming other people don't. I guess I didn't
say what doing the shrine thing is either. You ring a bell and then you bow and then you clap.
Yeah, I did it when I went to Japan. Yeah, I felt silly like I wasn't doing it right.
(55:54):
Sounds like somebody's not a believer. You're just going through the motions. It's like me taking
communion. Just kidding. I'm still Catholic on paper for the record. Anyway. They can't take it away
from you. They can't take it away from me. That's true. I get purgatory at least. So we're all good.
Do you even... Is that good? Yeah. Let's see. Kazehaya gives Sawako his good luck fortune,
(56:21):
which he jokes is like a kind of a crappy birthday gift, but here you go and she accepts it.
Joe and Ayane are in line for the shrine. Fortunately, his mom shows up and drags him off.
She does the shrine thing alone and sees Kazehaya and Sawako together. Then she spies none other
than Pin in the distance. He's getting mad at other people for falling in love. He's like
(56:41):
the go away. He sees but doesn't recognize Ayane getting hit on by two random guys and scares them
off because he's like, no, no love happening here. Get the fuck out of here. She turns to thank him
and is dismayed to see that it's pin. He tells her not to fall in love with him. And she says
that he's embarrassing as they both walk off together. How do you feel, Joe? Are we are we
(57:02):
back to being concerned? We're back to being concerned. I feel like this is being manifested
by the show. I feel like this doesn't match the characters. The note I actually have for this.
Ayane is into older dudes. This is like seven in the past. Oh my God, it's 10 years plus or
something. He's fucking old as shit. He's probably the same age as Toru. So 24. 24.
(57:28):
Like eight, nine years. That's pretty bad. Yeah. He was saying he's an old geezer and he's right.
He's an old geezer and he's his teacher. Now, I just can't happen. I think they're just messing
around. Maybe I hope they're just messing around. I do not trust anime. Unfortunately,
I watched enough anime to not trust anything. Let's see. I have a note here that this is the
(57:50):
first time I noticed that Ayane has like a violin on her lapel. Yeah, I saw that. What is up with that?
I don't think so. It's crazy how we don't fucking anything about Ayane at the end of the season.
We don't know nothing about her. We just know she's got shitty boyfriends.
Yeah, she dated a loser. That's it. That's all we know actually.
(58:11):
Well, no, we heard all those rumors where she's pimping out her fellow classmate. Oh, yeah.
So there's that. That would be cool. But she's not doing this. It's because she feels like she's,
she is in the plot, but she also feels like the all knowing character. So I guess. Well,
she is the audience. Yeah, she doesn't have as much going on issues there to
(58:34):
observe other people's dealings. Sawako and Kazuhaya walk home. They reached the spot where
they met in episode one as Sawako wonders what this year will bring. We get the EP play in
overseens of Chizu and Ryu walking together drinking amazake. So he finally got some good for him.
Elsewhere, Pin and Ayane are still walking together for some reason and she tells him some
(58:58):
ghost story that she makes up and he gets freaked out. We get another scene where Karumi's friend
asked her what kind of fortune she got and she says she's not telling. Good. Love to see a
Karumi sighting. Karumi cameo. Love that. We see Echo and Tomo and some third girl getting snacks at
a convenience store when they run into Kazuhaya's generic unnamed friends and they wish each other
(59:19):
a happy New Year's as we see Joe get dragged off by his parents outside through the window.
We get a scene of Kazuhaya's little brother. It's really short and then we get a cute little
scene in our...patron Martinez. And we get a cut of Sawako's parents hanging out and that's cute.
(59:39):
We cut back to Kazuhaya and Sawako as they start to walk off. They stop in front of her house.
Sawako says that she had a lot of fun and Kazuhaya agrees. He starts to walk off but he turns back
to see her waiting there. They stare at each other in silence as the scene transitions.
To Kazuhaya just walking home alone. What is this supposed to do?
(01:00:04):
Her parents are there. I know. No, no. They're inside. They're outside. They're outside. Oh my
god. They had the whole scene where she's just waiting there. She's like basically fidgeting
with her keys like it's fucking hitch and he just walks away. God. What a reference.
Sawako thinks to herself that Kazuhaya just isn't just a friend and that she wants to be
(01:00:27):
more than that with him as we cut to credits. Dude, come on. Oh my god. I know. You are boldly
saying there's it's gotta end with a kiss. I might on a snap in the twig here. Like get out of here.
Walk home alone, loser. God. Hold on. Can I say stuff I want to see in season two? What should
(01:00:48):
we say stuff we want to see in season two? I guess it's only me because I haven't seen it. Yeah.
I don't remember a lot but. Okay. What do you want to see in season two?
A kiss. Let's go. Yes. Come on. I will say for the first technically there's an episode zero
for season two. I'm going to watch it. Okay. So are we going to cover that? I'm going to cover it
(01:01:13):
because it's a recap from Karumi's perspective and that's content for me. Love Karumi. We'll
still do three episodes. I'll just do that as like a bonus. Okay. Cool. It's gotta be like I feel
like here's the thing. Here's the thing. Uh, Ryu would have would have kissed Chizu at the end
of this episode. He would have done it. He would have done the thing because he understands signals.
Kazuhaya fucking walked off. If Chizu had given him the signals. Chizu's dumber than Sawako though.
(01:01:39):
Well, yeah, that wouldn't have happened to Ryu because his life is unfortunate. But if it would
have happened, he would have done it. So do we still pity Ryu more than Kazuhaya? Is he still
like the most pitiful? Yes. Yeah. He almost didn't get Hamazaki this time. Yeah. They were, they were,
they were like, see, multiple people are scheming to get Sawako and Kazuhaya to work. I don't think
(01:02:00):
anybody's scheming to get Ryu and Chizu to work. He's got to do it all himself. He's got to call
his brother to drive three hours down to resolve some shit. He's having to call in favors. It takes
freaking Kazuhaya 10 minutes to realize he should walk next to Sawako instead of five steps ahead
of her. Well, he wasn't, he had prepared his heart for so much alone time with her. So he was just
(01:02:22):
rude for multiple minutes. Get it together, kid. Get it together. You know, you basically already
confessed to her. You already had the conversation of what it would be like to date. I know. You know
she likes you. Remember when you were like, so they're dating now. And I was like, nope. That's
not how this is going to go. But this is like, it's the same thing with like, this is why I asked
earlier. I'm like, do you think Ayane like thinks that Ryu likes Chizu? Cause apparently Chizu was
(01:02:46):
like, oh yeah, he comforted me at the docks at night after I got rejected. What else could that mean?
Yeah, I feel like she probably suspects just a good pal. God. So okay. Now that you finished one
season, what, what year rank came you to do? Okay. What am I ranking out of 10 out of 10? Yeah.
Um, like here's the thing. If this, if there wasn't a second season and it ended right here,
(01:03:11):
it'd be like a seven because I feel like you didn't pull the trigger on anything.
And that's upsetting. You know what I mean? Come on. You can't enjoy the ride for what it is.
I could, there needs to be some payoff. I can't listen to Sawako be like,
I want to be more than just friends. 10 episodes for it not to lead to anything.
(01:03:32):
They'd lead to him walking away at the end of the night. Imagine if that was the last
we ever saw of this series. I would go insane. It'd be feral. It frigging Ayane is walking home
with pin. Yeah. They held hands. That's big stuff. Normally it's like glancing is enough.
That's like a whole episode just making eye contact. You just, you wait. I got you started on
(01:03:53):
like top tier show Joe here. Just you wait till we like go back to like where it's painful to watch.
You're going to appreciate this a lot more later. It's, it's no, I do appreciate this. I'm just
saying there's no payoff right now. So I'm like, well, that's just like all shown in where they're
like, Hey, maybe you should go in or he me and then nothing. Oh, stone in any implied romance.
(01:04:15):
Never fulfilled. Well, it sounds like somebody hasn't super dimensional fortress. Macross.
It sounds like somebody hasn't watched some good TV. A smidge of a cross.
I didn't like that. It was a love triangle. I have. I'll have, you know, I've watched good
shown in. Okay. I'm also not the shown in defender here. I don't like a lot of shown in.
(01:04:36):
Now you're a Macross guy. It's newly found. Like the stuff I like about shown in is not
the romance either. That is never the thing I like about show. There's no such thing. I don't think
that's ever been the thing anybody's liked about shown in for all time. No, it's just the cool
tournament. Yeah. I want to see some kids punch each other and be bros and bro out. Well, then you
(01:04:58):
should like the, but not not a windbreaker though. I wouldn't like that. I can't deal with your
motivations are dumb as a villain. And she's right. I would hate him for having dumb motivations,
but you only spend like four episodes with him. It's fine. Oh, it's not like my hero academia
where he spent half a season with some guy whose ideology is what if I just destroyed everything?
(01:05:20):
Anyway, yeah, it's like a seven or an eight. It's yeah, I'd probably put it at an eight.
I'm being mean right now because they didn't just at the end or do anything. Okay. Well, how about
how about again, which do you like more so far angelic layer or can you need to? Okay, probably
angelic layer. I mean, yeah, I like angelic layer because that's like a complete story. Okay.
And it's all about how like you overcome your like personal problems through combat sports
(01:05:48):
with other people and also how you gain more funding for your your like medical research
by creating a cool children's game that everybody likes as we learn totally fabricated. Not in
the middle. They're so cool. It is very. Yeah, the one is not that great. That's crazy that they added
all the good stuff into the show. But this is top two show Joe here. Yeah, it's good. I'm thinking
(01:06:13):
it'll continue to pay off. I'm hoping it'll continue to pay off. I'm just like for season three.
I didn't get what I wanted in this season necessarily. Be patient. I know. But that's why
I'm like if it was just this season, I would be dissatisfied. But now that I know there's two more.
Anyway, here's what I want for next season. I'm going to listen out here. Let's hear it. I want to
learn anything about Ayane. Nothing about Ayane. It's insane to me that we know nothing about her.
(01:06:39):
I want to know I want to know what her deal is. I don't know if she plays violin. I want to know
what like she does for fun. Is that like the layer or those natural? Yeah, does she just is her
mouth just like that? All questions I want answered. How should we come friends with Cheezoo?
Yeah. How come she doesn't have other friends besides Cheezoo? They're all important questions.
(01:07:01):
Ew. More Karumi content. Give me more Karumi. Yes, I want to see it. We got a couple of Karumi
glances this time. Good stuff. Good stuff. I want there to be an arc where like her and Sawako
have to come together to do something and she's like, just kiss your stupid boyfriend already
idiot or something like that. You know what I mean? That would be good. I need her to be the harsh
(01:07:24):
friend. Yeah, rival. Like how Ryu is the harsh friend to Cheezoo. I also need the Ryu Cheezoo
stuff to like make some progress in a direction, please. I'm sure that will happen. So I'm not
that worried about it. I need pinned to die or like exit or something. He's the homeless teacher
for real now. He got promoted at the end of this. Oh, God. The more screen time. Back on our watch list.
(01:07:50):
I need him. I need Kazehaya to straight up get into a fistfight brawl with him. That's not
happening. I mean, he would lose because pinned would not hold back. No. He's all stomping around
like he was Godzilla in this episode. That's true. That's what I need. I need those things to happen.
I guess Kazehaya should, I mean, that'll happen, whatever. I'm sure the Kazehaya stuff will go
(01:08:11):
OK. We need to learn something about Kazehaya a little bit, please. Can we learn? Like can we
have this brother or something? Like can we see what he's like at home? He's cute. Yeah. We'll
probably get some of that, right? He's the main love interest. We probably get some
internality from him at some point. I mean, I guess the good thing about this show is that it is
mostly about the female protagonist. The show isn't fully revolving around like her feelings for
(01:08:34):
someone else, but just like her growth as a person is the main focus with romance playing a big part,
but not the only thing unlike most show. Joe. Right. That was it. OK. Do you like
Karumi as much as Joe does, Jenny? Probably not as much as Joe does, but I do like her. Yeah.
(01:08:57):
I like her dynamic with Sawako and how they have like a like it's a friendship, but it's like a
mean friendship. Like you care about each other, but you still like throw insults at each other.
Well, has Sawako thrown an insult at anyone ever? Never. She's just Karumi.
(01:09:21):
Yeah. But you feel that she likes Sawako and I like that dynamic.
Sundae, Karumi. Yeah. Looking forward to seeing more of her in season two. Yes.
You want to know what the first episode of season two is called, Joe? Valentine's Day.
Is it episode zero? Yeah, Valentine's Day. OK. Yeah. So that sounds promising, right? That's
(01:09:44):
a big shojo trope. Big shojo thing. We're going to have to explain how it's different in Japan.
Yeah. It is interesting. We want to rank characters.
You're top three. You want to top three? We'll do a top three. OK.
Number one, Ayame. Number two, Ryu. And then number three, maybe Sawako, I think, for me.
(01:10:08):
She's a very sadly relatable character to me. Yeah. How about you guys? Karumi number one for
you, Joe? Or is it Ryu? Who's going to win out? This is a character I like, right? Or is this
a character I like to watch? It's a character you like. Normally, let's go hand in hand.
Character I like. Typically. I mean, here's it. I like Ryu, but he doesn't get to do much
(01:10:34):
is the thing. You know what I mean? Yeah. But his name is back. So I feel like my top three
are probably Ayame, Karumi, and then maybe Chizu next, actually. Like she really climbed up
the rankings in the last couple of episodes. Yes, she's a hoot. How about you? I do like Ryu.
(01:10:54):
How about you, Jenny? My three. It'd be Ayame, Sawako, and then Chizu.
Yeah, the trio. That trio. Girlies. Yeah. It's a good solid group. Good friends.
Yeah. I like how they have more depth than just like a. Yeah, right. I've said this in the past
(01:11:17):
where like friends are like so unsubstantial and a lot of show, Joe. But they like help her and
she, I don't know. They're just good friends. Yeah. And they're likeable individually. So,
okay, cross the board. Ayame is the best character. Ayame.
Ayame. Ayame.
(01:11:37):
I'm a toko of Kimi Nii To-to-kei. Oh, yeah. Hato-ko is good too. Oh, man. Sweet. Cool.
Well, that wraps up the Kimi Nii To-to-kei currently. Well, you know, next episode
here on Show Joe will start the coverage of season two and then we'll probably simultaneously cover
season three of Kimi Nii To-to-kei with something else. Got to figure out what that other thing is,
(01:12:02):
though. But for the rest of this episode, let's roll into recommendations of which
Jenny as our lovely guest, would you like to start us off?
I am here to recommend a game called To-im. It is a very cute. Yeah. It's T-O-E-M.
A very cute, like, photography game and you don't need to, like, like photography to like this game.
(01:12:29):
It's black and white and you're just like a little kid and your grandma's like,
I have a brand new camera for you and I want you to go and explore the world and take pictures
of whatever you want. And so you visit, like, different cities and it's, I guess,
like, encouraged to play with a controller because each block that you land on, it's,
(01:12:57):
I don't know how to describe it. It's like a floating square and you can rotate,
rotate it around. Yeah, yeah. And it's just very wholesome and you have like,
cute challenges. Yeah, the music's great and the like, the voice acting, there is no voice acting,
but it's just like when people talk, like when you interact with people, it's just like,
(01:13:20):
eep, eep, pop. Oh, like little, um, Animal Crossing kind of gibberish or something.
Yeah, so you just walk around, sound design's great, the game is very cute, it's short. It's
not that expensive, it's only like four bucks. You guys play short games. Yeah, because playing
long games is exhausting. How are you able to do that? I don't know. It's like you played one game
(01:13:47):
for a year and a half. Yeah, things that make me happy. I don't want them to end. Okay, how about
you, Joe? What's your recommendation? Well, I'll get my dog to pipe down. Hi. So I'm reading
A Wizard of Earthsea right now, which is a fantasy book and it's very good and I'm liking it quite
a bit even though fantasy isn't like always my jam. Because the way it's written is very fun and like
(01:14:09):
there's a lot of cool, I don't know, phrasing and like the way, like the craft of creating a
like interesting paragraph is something I have never been able to do and something I very much
appreciate when I read and reading this book reminds me of another fantasy book that I also
have read and liked quite a bit. So I'm going to recommend The Last Unicorn by Fear Beazle.
(01:14:33):
This is what the animated movies based off of? There is an animated film adaptation of The Last
Unicorn also that is quite good, even though it looks kind of there's there's some stuff in it.
But yeah, so the the book is the movie is a 4k release. That's awesome. Yeah, so this is a book
(01:14:54):
no, what is it about? It is about a unicorn that is, you know, they're like an isolated species
and it hears a rumor that it is the last of its kind. So it goes on a journey to discover if it
is truly The Last Unicorn or if they are elsewhere, if there are other elsewhere, like what happened?
Why is she the last one? And there's a lot of fantasy stuff going on in this. She meets a wizard,
(01:15:16):
she meets a witch. She gets caught in like a like a zoo at one point. There's a whole thing with
like a kingdom. She gets turned into a human at one point. It's pretty sick. There's like a lot of
really cool stuff happening in it. The way it's written is like really fascinating and like fun
in that way that like fantasy stuff can be like for me, it's either this one really hits a good
(01:15:39):
medium of like being fanciful writing and like doing a lot of like really cool imagery and that
kind of stuff without being a slog to get through. You know what I mean? Like I've read other fantasy
stuff where they do this and it's just a little bit too much and reading it becomes really hard.
And I am not as big of a fan of reading that stuff. So this really strikes a good like medium
(01:16:01):
balance for me in terms of being able to read through it. It's pretty short. It's like 300 pages
or something. You could knock this out. Not that hard. But yeah, it's a really good book.
Apparently it has is of high critical acclaim. How old is it? 1968. It's the publication date.
Let's see. In 1998, it was ranked 18th in Best All Time Fantasy novels. Oh, wow.
(01:16:27):
My poll subscribers are poll subscribers. The movie is also pretty good.
There's some cool visual stuff going on in that. Yeah, I remember it. It's kind of a weird movie.
Don't do remember liking it as a kid. Mia Farrow voices the unicorn. Okay, I'm going to recommend
Coral Island, which is a kind of farming sim game that is technically published, but they're still
(01:16:53):
like adding content to it. But it's, you know, like ever since Stardew Valley, there's been like an
explosion of farming sim kind of things. But this one's standout. It's like really pretty artwork.
And there's like lots of story elements because sometimes it's like pretty like story in these
kind of games can be not as exciting. But that's a really good job on this one. And there's like a
(01:17:17):
bajillion dating candidates and the the portrait art is so good. Like I can't pick who I'm going to
marry. So I have like multiple boyfriends and maybe a girlfriend or two right now in the game.
It's one of those that doesn't have consequences. Because I always had to look up like, oh my god,
they're going to like come for me. Take multiple people. Yeah. Yes. That's good. But yeah, so it's
(01:17:47):
like really good. I have spent seven playing it since early access. And the number of hours I've
put into that game is wild. Well, for farming sim, I don't know, almost 300 hours. But because it's
cool, it's got like merfolk and you can like clean the ocean of pollution. There's lots of like
(01:18:10):
environment stuff and kind of fantastical elements. And god, the character art is so good.
I mean, because I even have like a character that you can date that has like a kid and she has
stretch marks and like, you know, like details like that that you don't see in games ever are
really cool. And it's a very diverse cast of characters. I really like this kind of game to
(01:18:34):
play while listening to podcasts or something. Jenny, if you played it, they have like a kind
of K-pop idol guy that you know, really cute. Yeah. But yeah, so that's my recommendation. It's on
Steam. I think I don't know if it's on any other platforms, but I highly recommend it's very good
(01:18:56):
if you're into farming since at all. Yeah, gorgeous, gorgeous game. You enjoyed season one of
Kimi Dita Doke. Please rate the podcast five stars out of five stars or whatever the scale is.
The highest. The best. The highest accolades. Because you love this podcast and you love Kimi Dita
(01:19:17):
Doke and you're going to stick around for season two coverage. So go ahead and do that. And while
you're doing that, tell your friends about this. This is how we gain new listeners by
the audience recommending it to other people. So go ahead and tell your friends that you
like the show and that this show is good. Whether you watched it for the first time or maybe this
(01:19:39):
was a rewatch or maybe you didn't even watch it. You're just getting a recap from us in preparation
for season three. So go ahead and tell your friends to listen to this podcast. Make sure to
mention how charismatic we all are in that little battle of it. For sure. Don't rely on it. But yeah,
you can follow us on Instagram. That's kind of our main platform posts and stuff. Well,
thank you for being our guest this week, Jenny. Oh my gosh. Thank you for having me. Our very first.
(01:20:04):
Our very first guest. I was a good addition. I don't know. Yeah. We'll probably we'll probably
invite you back for the season two. It's an alley. Oh, I thought it was my internet again.
Oh, no, you don't get to come back. Yeah, this was fun. Thank you for having me.
(01:20:25):
Yeah, we'll hopefully have guests on occasionally. There we go. All right, everyone. Thanks for
sticking around with season one. Season one's over. We're done. It's going to be a new year of
memories and firsts and not getting kissed. So be excited for that, I guess. Yeah. Valentine's
(01:20:46):
Day is right around the corner, you know. Yeah, that'll be good. Drama, drama. Lovey, lovey. Now
I have a two hour episode to edit with three audios. If only you could do it in a normal way.
Use a tool made for audio editing and not for video editing. I don't want to learn new things.
(01:21:11):
It's going to save you hours, hours. If you combine all the hours. If you combine all the hours,
it's probably days, days of your life. I don't want to think about it one day, eventually.
Until then. Until then, remember, even if your even if your date is super hot, you don't you
(01:21:35):
shouldn't just walk several steps ahead of them. Just walk next to them and don't look at them.
Look the other way. They're cute. Oh my God. Tell her. Oh, she won't know other words. Also,
just try putting a clip in your hair. Maybe it'll solve all the problems. Maybe you shouldn't
wait until your your friends do for you. You know, okay, that's all folks. Anyway, bye.
(01:22:10):
Yeah, it kind of looks like the Joe's character is discord kind of blobby person.
We're talking about Excalibur. Excalibur talks with a human voice.
This is the most annoying character in Soul Eater. That's Excalibur.
(01:22:32):
Oh, your thing is from Soul Eater? Yeah, it's Excalibur. That's the thing with the
legendary sword, right? Okay. Anyways, continue. So his legend began in the 17th century.
