Sadly, however, this was just the start of what would take him through a maze of mental health issues that culminated with thoughts of taking his own life. Sugrue's many years with the United States Air Force as a captain, and his time as an officer, recently promoted to sergeant with the Walnut Creek Police Department could not prepare him for what was in store following the incident when he had to protect himself from great harm or even death. Sugrue’s fortitude to get his life back on track despite years of court proceedings (criminal and civil) and what he calls a betrayal from his very own police department, is applause worthy. He won the battle against frontline trauma.
