Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning. This is sent seven World News in seven minutes.
I'm Juliette Martin and today is Thursday, the twenty fifth
of September twenty twenty five. We start in the Americas

(00:24):
in the United States. Yesterday it was the second day
of the General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly.
It was the first time in almost sixty years that
a Syrian leader has addressed the Assembly. President Ahmad al
Sharah spoke about the injustice and deprivation and oppression Syria

(00:51):
has suffered and called for the complete lifting of sanctions.
In his address, Kenya's President William Ruto called for Africa
to have permanent membership at the United Nations Security Council.
He said that Africa should have at least two seats

(01:13):
because it dominates most of the Security Council agenda, provides
some of the largest contingents of UN peacekeeping forces, and
bears the heaviest costs of instability.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
You cannot claim to be the United Nations while disregarding
the voice of fifty four nations. It is not possible.
Africa is no longer willing to wait on the margins
of global governance while decisions about peace, security and development

(01:49):
are made without our understanding, without our perspectives, and without
our voice.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
Iran's President Masud Pezeshkian said that his country would never
seek to build a nuclear bomb and said that Iran
seeks to cooperate with friendly, peace seeking international partners. He
also strongly condemned Israel's actions in Gaza and the plan

(02:16):
to create a quote greater Israel. Ukraine's president Vodimizolinski said
that crises in Gaza, Syria and Ukraine have failed to
receive enough international support. He also said that international law
alone is not enough to ensure peace and that weapons

(02:39):
are needed. Talking about artificial intelligence and drones, he said
that the world is living through the most destructive arms
race in human history.

Speaker 3 (02:51):
You know perfectly well international law doesn't work fully unless
you have powerful friends who are through willing to stand
up for it, even during bloodshed. There isn't a signal
international institution that can truly stop it. That's how weak

(03:13):
these institutions have become.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
Earlier in the day, Argentina's President Javier Malay praised United
States President Donald Trump's border and tariff policies Africa. In Guinea,
a new constitution has been approved by eighty nine percent

(03:37):
of voters. The constitution could allow junta leader Mahmadi Dunbuya
to run for office, which was not previously allowed. The
presidential election is expected to take place in December. The
new constitution also introduces a longer presidential term and a

(03:59):
new senate. Malawi's President Lazarus Chaquerra, has conceded defeat in
the presidential election. He said, it is only right that
I concede defeat out of respect for you as citizens
and out of respect for the constitution. His main rival,

(04:21):
Peter Mutharika, is leading in results so far. Uganda's Electoral
Commission will allow President Yoweri Museveni to seek re election.
The vote is due early next year. Museveni first came
to power in nineteen eighty six. If re elected, he

(04:45):
said he would prioritize public safety, transport, infrastructure, healthcare and education.
Asia Thailand's Prime Minister Anuti m Chanvirakul has said he
plans to dissolve parliament by the end of January twenty

(05:06):
twenty six. A general election will be held in March
or April. In South Korea, the former president's wife appeared
in court in a corruption trial yesterday. Kim Kyonhi is
the wife of Yunsuk Yul, who was removed from office

(05:28):
in December twenty twenty four. Kim is charged with bribery
and stock manipulation, among other charges. She was arrested in August.
In India, at least twelve people have died due to
heavy rain in the eastern city of Kolkata. According to police,

(05:50):
most of the deaths were caused by electrocution. The Doaga
Puja Hindu festival is due to begin in the Redail
on Sunday. Europe, the European Union could offer Ukraine a
reparations loan of up to one hundred and thirty billion euros.

(06:15):
According to Reuters, The International Monetary Fund will assess Ukraine's
financial requirements over the next two years. The loan would
be repaid by Ukraine after it received reparations from Russia
in a peace agreement. And In Ireland, nominations for presidential

(06:39):
candidates closed yesterday. Well known people including mixed martial arts
fighter Conor McGregor, singer Bob Geldoff and riverdance performer Michael Flatley,
had expressed their interest but did not formally seek nomination.
Former Social Affairs minister The Humphreys will run, as well

(07:02):
as Jim Gavin, the manager of the Dublin Gaelic football team.
Independent lawmaker Katherine Connolly will represent the opposition coalition. That's

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
