Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning. This is seven world News in seven minutes.
I'm Stephen Devinchenzie. Today is Tuesday, the twenty second of
April twenty twenty five, starting in Europe today in the

(00:21):
Vatican City. Pope Francis died yesterday morning, aged eighty eight.
The Pope was born in Argentina's capital, Buenos Aids, and
worked through the church, eventually becoming the Archbishop of Buenosidres.
In two thousand and one. He was made a cardinal
by Pope John Paul. After Pope Benedict resigned in twenty thirteen,

(00:45):
Francis was chosen as Pope and became the first Pope
to be born in the Americas, the first pope from
the Southern Hemisphere, and the first pope born outside of
Europe since the eighth century. Choosing the next Pope will
happen in about two weeks. There are two hundred and

(01:06):
fifty three cardinals. However, only those under eighty years old
are allowed to vote, which means that only one hundred
and thirty five will choose and there must be a
two thirds majority or voting continues. New York Cardinal Timothy
Dolan said that Pope Francis was a great teacher in

(01:28):
life and death.

Speaker 2 (01:30):
He taught us at the by allowing us to watch
him die. He taught us that. He taught us that
who we are is more important than what we can do.
He couldn't do much. He could barely raise his hand yesterday,
did you see? He could barely speak. He couldn't do much.
But what he was, as a child of God, created

(01:53):
in God's image and likeness, destined for all eternity, given
the high office of the success Peter, what he was
was so much more important than what he could do.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
In France, a group of elderly men are facing trial
for allegedly robbing the US reality TV star Kim Kardashian
in twenty sixteen. Kardashian was tied up during the robbery
and lost around ten million dollars worth of jewelry from

(02:27):
the apartment she was renting in Paris. The group of
six men are all over sixty and at least two
of them, aged sixty eight and seventy one, have admitted
to robbing Kardashian. Kardashian will give evidence in the trial
in Paris next week. America's Colombia has declared a health

(02:50):
emergency after at least thirty four deaths from yellow fever.
Yellow fever is transmitted by mosquitoes and can be prevented
using a vaccine, which Columbia's Health ministry has recommended everyone
should take. In El Salvador, four US Democrat members of

(03:11):
Congress have arrived hoping to meet the prisoner Kilmar Abrogo Garcia,
who was mistakenly deported. The four senators have said that
they are hoping to facilitate Garcia's return to the US.
In the United States, there have been reports that Defense
Secretary Pete Hegseth shared important military information in a chat

(03:35):
with family and friends using the chat service Signal. This
is the second accusation about Hegseth sharing plans about attacks
on Yemen that hadn't been carried out yet with people
that should not know about it, after The Atlantic magazine's
editor Jeffrey Goldberg was accidentally added to a Signal chat

(03:56):
with Hegseth last month. The New York Times said that
it had spoken to four people with knowledge of the
second Signal chat, and The Guardian has also said that
it has independently confirmed the existence of the chat. Speaking
at an Easter party outside the White House yesterday, Hegseth

(04:16):
attacked the media for spreading stories and called the journalists
asking questions a bunch of hoaxters.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
This is why we're fighting the fake news media. This
is why we're fighting slash and burn Democrats.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
This is why we're fighting holsters, hosters.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
This group, no, no, this group.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
Right here full of hosters that pedal anonymous sources from leakers,
with access to grid and then yes, put it all
together as if it's some news story and when we.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
Know it, you know exactly what it is.

Speaker 1 (04:51):
Africa. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, at least one
hundred and forty eight people have died after a boat
caught fire and sank this weekend. Reuter's news agency has
reported that there were hundreds of people on the motorized
wooden boat, which was traveling on the River Congo. South

(05:13):
Sudan's army has said that it has recaptured a town
that was taken by a militia group in March. There
has recently been a fear that South Sudan could enter
a new civil war between forces loyal to President Salva
Kiir and forces loyal to Vice President Riek Machar, who

(05:34):
were on opposite sides of the previous civil war Asia
Yemen's WHO. These have said that at least twelve people
were killed by US air strikes on the capital city
Sanna yesterday. The US has increased attacks on the WHO
THEIS Recently, Israel has admitted to professional failures related to

(06:00):
the killings of fifteen rescue workers in Gaza last month.
The Israeli military has said that a deputy commander was
being dismissed because of the shooting of eight Red Crescent paramedics,
six civil defense workers and a United Nations staff member
on the twenty third of March. Israel has admitted making mistakes,

(06:23):
but has denied trying to cover up the killings. And
Elderly people who use smartphones may be less likely to
get dementia, according to a study of studies. There have
been concerns that using electronic devices could cause a cognitive decline. However,

(06:45):
researchers at the Austin Comprehensive Memory Centre in the US
have said that an analysis of published studies suggests that
people who use smartphones, tablets, and other devices show lower
rates of dementia. However, they note that it is possible
that this could also be explained in reverse that elderly

(07:08):
people with better cognitive functions are just more likely to
use electronic devices. A big thank you to Philippe in
France and Agnishka in Poland for becoming our newest supporters.
