Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning. This is send seven World news in seven minutes.
I'm Stephen Devinchenze. Today is Tuesday, the twenty ninth of
April twenty twenty five. Starting in Europe today, major power

(00:21):
cuts yesterday affected all of mainland Portugal, most of mainland Spain,
part of southern France and Andorra. The electricity outage affected
tens of millions of people and was especially disruptive for transport,
leaving thousands of people stuck in trains and requiring people

(00:46):
to be rescued from the underground tunnels of metro lines
in Lisbon, Madrid and Barcelona. Airports in the Iberian Peninsula
were largely disrupted, with many a temporarily closing. People were
unable to take cash out of cash machines and lost

(01:07):
phone signal. Water service was also lost in some places
where it needs electricity to reach. People were told to
avoid driving because traffic lights were not working. At the
time of recording this podcast, energy supplies had been returned
to some areas, however, in other areas power cuts have

(01:30):
already been continuing for twelve hours. At around six pm,
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez gave a press conference and
thanked France and Morocco for helping to reconnect some parts
of Spain. Sanchez said that at that time the cause
of the power cut was not known. Portugal's energy network

(01:54):
said that they believed that the power outage was caused
by a rare atmosphere event, and various officials said that
there was no evidence of a cyber attack. In France,
a trial has started of a group of men accused
of robbing US media star Kim Kardashian in twenty sixteen.

(02:18):
The group has been nicknamed the Grandpa Robbers because they
are all over sixty and some are over seventy. Russian
President of Vladimir Putin has announced a three day ceasefire
in Ukraine between the eighth of May and the tenth
of May to cover the victory day of the Soviet

(02:39):
Union in the Second World War. Russia has rejected a
thirty day ceasefire that Ukraine has agreed to. Ukrainian Foreign
Minister Andre Sibia said that if Russia really wanted peace,
then they would agree to an immediate ceasefire, not wait
until the eighth of May, and said that Putin's ceasepire

(03:01):
is just for a parade Americas. In Canada, there was
a general election yesterday at the time of recording this podcast,
votes are being counted. On Sunday night, Prime Minister Mark
Carney said that US President Donald Trump has betrayed Canada,

(03:25):
said that the old relationship of the US and Canada
is over, and said that the US leadership of the
world's economy is over.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
It is true that President Trump has betrayed Canada. He's
betrayed Canada, and he has ruptured the global economy. Our
old relationship with the United States is over. Of course,

(04:00):
America's leadership. America's leadership of the global economy is over.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
Also in Canada, a man has been charged with murder
for a car ramming attack which killed eleven people this weekend.
Mexican President Claudia Schinbaum has said that Mexico is working
hard to fight against the spread of screw worm after
the United States threatened to stop importing cattle from Mexico.

(04:30):
Screwworm is a pest which lives inside animals and injures
and sometimes kills them. Asia, India and Pakistan's armies have
exchanged small arms fire across their border for the past
four nights. According to the Indian Army. No casualties have

(04:52):
been reported. There has been tension between India and Pakistan
since twenty six tourists were killed in an attack last week.
India accuses Pakistan of giving refuge to terrorist groups Yemens
WHO the Rebels have said that a United States air
strike hit a prison holding African migrants and said that

(05:17):
sixty eight people were killed. The US has been bombing
WHO the targets continuously over the last two weeks. The
United States has not confirmed this particular attack, However, the
International Organization for Migration released a statement saying that it
believed that many migrants were killed. North Korea has acknowledged

(05:40):
sending soldiers to Russia to fight against Ukraine for the
first time. North Korean state television said that leader Kim
yong un ordered the deployment. Russia also recognized the existence
of North Korean soldiers fighting for Russia for the first
time this weekend, when President Putin called the North Korean

(06:03):
soldiers heroes. South Korea said yesterday that North Korean soldiers
fighting for Russia was a criminal act. Africa, Malawi and
Tanzania are in a trade war. Last month, Malawi blocked
the import of various types of food from other countries,

(06:25):
saying that this was to protect Malawian produces. This greatly
affected Tanzanian producers who sell food to Malawi, and last
week Tanzania issued restrictions on imports from Malawi in response.
This is expected to be a major problem for Malawi,
which is landlocked and often uses Tanzanian ports to sell

(06:49):
to the rest of the world. And in South Africa,
archaeologists have found thousands of tools made of stone used
by early humans. The team found the cutting tools in
a cave and say that they would have been used
for hunting between twelve thousand and twenty four thousand years ago.

(07:14):
That's your world news in seven minutes. Have a great day,
See you tomorrow.
