Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good morning. This is sen seven World News in seven minutes.
I'm nile More. Today is Tuesday, the ninth of December
twenty twenty five. Today we're starting in Asia. Cambodia has

(00:23):
accused Thailand of inhumane and brutal acts after Thai fighter
jets struck targets inside of Cambodia. Earlier this year, there
were casualties on both sides after several incidents of fighting
between Cambodian and Thai forces near their shared border. In July,

(00:45):
Thailand and Cambodia signed a ceasefire agreement, and by November
both sides had begun to remove weapons from the border region.
Then yesterday the conflict began again when Thailand and said
that some of its troops had come under fire from
Cambodia and responded by launching air strikes. In a statement,

(01:10):
the Thai Army's Chief of Staff, General Chaipruk dun Prapat,
said that the objective of the army is to cripple
Cambodia's military capability for a long time to come, for
the safety of our children and grandchildren. In Japan, authorities

(01:32):
issued tsunami warnings yesterday evening after a powerful seven point
six magnitude earthquake struck eighty kilometers off the coast. The
Japan Meteorological Agency has warned that waves up to three
meters high could hit the country following the earthquake, and

(01:53):
has ordered people in the Hokkaido, Amori, and Iwate prefectures
to evacuate. Africa in Nigeria, one hundred school children who
were kidnapped from a Catholic school in the state of
Niger have been freed. On the twenty first of November,

(02:15):
more than two hundred and fifty children and twelve members
of staff were taken from the Saint Mary's Catholic School
in Papiri Village by an armed gang. Nigeria's government says
that one hundred of those children have now been freed,
though did not say whether they were freed through negotiations,

(02:37):
ransom payments, or by force. There is no news about
the other one hundred and fifty children who are still
being held captive in Beneen. Nigeria has sent warplanes and
troops to help the government restore order after a failed
coup attempt on Sunday. Although there have been whos in

(03:00):
other nearby countries in recent years, including in Bakina, Fasso,
Guinea Bassau and Nije. This is the first time Nigeria
has intervened to help one of its neighbours. The Office
of the President of Nigeria, Bolatonubu said that it was
providing the government of Benin with surveillance and with military missions,

(03:25):
and that troops from Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and Ghana
would soon join Nigeria to help support Benin's government. Meanwhile,
security forces in Benin are still searching for the coup
plotters who have fled Americas. In Brazil, thieves have stolen

(03:49):
eight artworks by the French artist On Rimatise from a
library in Su Paulo. Sunday was the first day of
an exhibition of artworks at the Bibliotheca Mario Jiundraji. At
ten am, two thieves walked in through the library's main entrance,

(04:09):
put the artworks into bags, and walked out again. Police
say they have identified one of the suspects using facial
recognition technology and are looking for the other thief. In Ecuador,
a judge has ordered former president Lenin Moreno to stand

(04:30):
trial for corruption. According to prosecutors, a Chinese company called
Sino Hydro, paid Moreno, his family and connected business people
seventy six million dollars in bribes to let them build
the Coca Codo Sinclair hydro Electric Plants, the largest hydro

(04:52):
electric plant in the country. Europe. The president of the
euro up Council, Antonio Costa, has criticized the United States
new national security strategy. On Friday, the US published a

(05:12):
new national security strategy which criticized European countries for many reasons,
such as being too welcoming to migrants and being anti
free speech. Since Donald Trump began his second term as
US president in January, US officials have repeatedly criticized Europe

(05:35):
for being anti free speech while giving their support to
far right parties in European countries, such as the AfD
in Germany. Now European Council President Costa has criticized the
US for getting involved in European politics, saying that quote

(05:57):
allies don't threaten to interfere in the domestic political choices
of their allies. In Lithuania, the leader of a governing
political party has been found guilty of hatred against Jews
and belittling the Holocaust on social media. In twenty twenty

(06:19):
three and was given a fine of five thousand euros.
Remigius Zematitis is the leader of Nemunas Dawn, which is
part of the governing coalition in the United Kingdom. European
leaders have met in London to discuss a peace plan

(06:41):
for ending the war in Ukraine. French President Emanuel Macron,
German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz and Ukrainian President Volodomir Zelenski were
welcomed yesterday by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at his
residence ten Downing Street. European leaders have questioned some of

(07:04):
the US's proposals for ending the war in Ukraine because
they seemed to favor Russia. In comments before they began
their meeting in London, German Chancellor Mertz said he was
quote skeptical about the US's ideas, while French President Macron

(07:24):
said that Europe still held quote a lot of cards
in our hands when it came to negotiating with the
US and Russia for a peace deal. Meanwhile, in the
United States, President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he
was frustrated that a deal had not yet been agreed,

(07:45):
and even accused President Zelenski of not reading the US
peace proposal.

Speaker 2 (07:52):
So we've been speaking to President Boutin, and we've been
speaking to Ukrainian leaders, including Zelenski President, and I have
to say that I'm a little bit disappointed that President
Zelinsky hasn't yet read the proposal that was as of
a few hours ago. His people love it.

Speaker 1 (08:12):
And also in the United Kingdom, researchers are writing the
first ever dictionary of the Ancient Celtic language. Ancient Celtic
was spoken by tribes in Ireland and along the West
coast of Britain as far back as three hundred and
twenty five BC. Much of the language has been lost,

(08:37):
but by bringing together sources such as ancient memorial stones,
researchers from Aberystwyth University in Wales think they can compile
a dictionary of more than one thousand words. That's your
world news in seven minutes. If you enjoy this podcast,

(08:59):
please tell all your friends to find Simple English News
daily in their podcast app I'm niall More. Tomorrow you
will be with Stephen Devonchenzie. Have a great day.
