the thirty first of July twenty two. Starting in the

(01:08):
Americas today in Venezuela, there have been mass protests across
the country against the disputed election results from Sunday's election,
which said that President Nicolas Maduro had won a third term.
Police fired tear gas at protesters in many cities. Human

(01:30):
rights groups said yesterday that five people had died in
the protests in the city of Coro. In Falcon state.
People pulled down a statue of Ugod Chavez, the mentor
of Nicolas Maduro. Some protesters told journalists that they want
Maduro to go because they hope that their family members

(01:55):
may return to Venezuela. Around one in four Venezuelans have
left the country since Maduro took power because of the
collapse of Venezuela's economy. There have been reports of violence
involving pro Maduro paramilitaries attacking protesters. Maduro has accused opposition

(02:17):

(02:38):
that the end of Maduro's power is inevitable. In the
United States, President Joe Biden has called for reforms of
the Supreme Court. Biden's three proposed changes are that the
president should not be immune from prosecution, that Supreme Court

(03:00):
justices should only serve for a maximum of eighteen years,
and that the Supreme Court should follow an ethics code.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
Today, I'm calling for three ball reforms to be sore
trust and accountability to the court and our demarcras. I'm
calling for castles of amendment call no one is above
the law a medment. The second thing I'm asking for.
We've had term levers for presidence in the United States
for only seventy five years after the Truman administration, and

(03:35):
I believe we should have term levers for Supreme Court
justice in the United States as well. Third, I'm calling
for binding code of conduct for the Supreme Court.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
Also in the United States. Faster food company McDonald's has
reported a drop in global sales for the first time
in three years. International sales fell by one percent in

hundred people have been killed because of landslides in Kerala
state during heavy rain. Most of the victims are believed
to be workers of tea and cardamom plantations. Kerala government

(04:36):
minister mb Rajesh said yesterday that police and the army
are carrying out rescue operations on a war footing.

Speaker 3 (04:45):

more than these numbers. Rescue operations are being carried out
on a war footing.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
In Israel, a soldier has been charged with the aggravated
abuse of Palestinian prisoners, despite protests against the arrests of soldiers.
Nine other soldiers are facing charges over allegations that they

it said was targeting a senior Hezbolah commander. Lebanese media

Hezbolah launched rockets into Israel yesterday which killed one Israeli civilian.

(05:45):
Africa in Mali, the ruling military junta has admitted that
it has suffered significant losses over the last few days
in fighting against Tuareg separatist rebels and also Islamist jihadist militants.
Twareg rebels said that they had killed Russian Wagner soldiers

(06:07):
and Malian Army soldiers. It is rare for the Malayan
Army to admit defeat. However, it may have been necessary
because Wagner released a statement saying that one of its
commanders was killed in the ambush. Ethiopia will receive three
point four billion dollars from the International Monetary Fund to

(06:31):
support its economic reforms over the next four years. Ethiopia
has been suffering from high inflation and a shortage of
foreign currency since the end of the Tigray Civil War,
which ended in twenty twenty two. Europe. In Serbia, thousands

(06:52):
of people protested yesterday against a planned project with the
European Union to extract lithium. Protesters in several towns in
western and central Serbia said that mining lithium would be
bad for the environment and would not benefit Serbian citizens.

(07:13):
In France, the Olympic men's triathlon event was postponed yesterday
because of concerns about the quality of the water in
the River Sene. The men's triathlon, which involves swimming, cycling
and running, was postponed until today, the same day as
the women's triathlon. The water will be tested again this morning.

(07:38):
And In Italy, researchers have developed a robotic cleaning dog
with a vacuum cleaner attached Vero, which stands for vacuum
cleaner equipped robots, has been taught to identify cigarette butts
on the ground and suck them up using vacuum cleaners

(07:59):
attached to its feet. Vero has been practicing by picking
up cigarette butts on the beach in Genoa. That's your
world news in seven minutes. As during August, we will
only be releasing episodes on Tuesdays and Fridays. The next
episode of C seven will be on Friday with Juliet Martin.
