Shure MV7 (00:00):
Hi, and welcome back
to simple SEO.
The podcast.
Today, we're going to talk abouthow you can grow your podcast,
kind of what are the bestpractices?
What are the things that you cando as a podcaster, or if you're
planning on creating a podcastto really help grow your
audience for your show.
(00:21):
So we're going to get into a fewthings that we've talked about
before, and we're going to talkabout a few things that we've
not touched on previously on thepodcast.
So.
Let's jump right in.
Now your podcast, the same asyour blog, you're going to want
to really focus on youraudience.
Who is it that you're trying toconnect with?
(00:41):
Who do you help?
How do you help them?
What do they want to know fromyou?
What are they hoping to learn?
What questions do they have ifyou're not sure this is where
you really need to do a littlebit of research.
You need to talk to yourcustomers.
You need to talk to prospects orleads or people in groups, and
really get an understanding of.
What is it that they're tryingto figure out?
(01:03):
What are they trying to do tosucceed in their business or in
their life?
Or what change are they tryingto make?
And if you don't know.
And you don't have someone toask yet.
If you have customers coming in,you can think about the
questions that you get asked ona regular basis.
You'll notice that.
I often address questions that Iget from students or prospects
(01:25):
or questions that are submittedon that Google form we have, or
texted into the show.
I use a lot of those questionsto help format my content
because I know that my audienceis interested in it.
If you don't yet have anaudience you're working on
building your audience, but youhave expertise in your niche.
(01:45):
You've done whatever it is thatyou now want to teach people,
just think back to what wouldyou have liked to have known?
What questions would you havehad early on?
And that's going to help youreally kind of get into who is
that audience now.
Do you need to create a biggiant persona?
(02:06):
Not necessarily though.
I'll be honest.
I do think that you benefit fromhaving persona information
available when you're creatingcontent.
So really knowing who is myideal customer and who am I
trying to help and.
How do they like to.
Consume their content.
(02:27):
And what type of information dothey want?
Because you do want to thinkabout your consumer when you're
putting together your plan foryour podcast, if you want it to
grow.
So the very first thing isyou're going to think about your
audience, who are you creatingcontent for?
That's number one.
Number two, you want to reallystay focused when it comes to
your content topics.
(02:47):
For your show.
Similar to your blog.
You want to make sure thatyou're addressing the questions
that your ideal customer isgoing to have.
They make sense.
You don't want to have a podcastwhere one week you talk about
business and the next week youtalk about parenting.
And then the third week you talkabout home organization because
(03:10):
those.
Niches are so far apart.
Yes.
Somebody may be a businessowner.
Who's also a parent.
Who also wants to organize theirhome, but they're not coming to
you for all three of thosethings.
If you're trying to be known foreverything, you're going to end
up being known for nothing.
So it's really important tofocus on.
(03:32):
One core area in your contentand then break that into four
sections.
So for me, Just for example, Ifocus on organic marketing and
search engine optimization.
And from an SEO perspective, Ifocus on SEO for Google, for
your website or your blog.
For your podcast.
(03:53):
And I will potentially focus onSEO for Pinterest.
I'm doing a test with it rightnow.
I'm going to give it six monthsor so.
If it works out the way thatpeople tell me it will, then
we'll be talking about that aswell.
But for right now, that's in atest.
So we'll see.
So for now on my blog.
Or on my podcast, you're goingto get episodes about SEO.
(04:14):
So SEO, keywords, SEO tips, SEOfor beginners.
How not to make mistakes withSEO, then you're going to get.
Episodes about podcasting andhow to use podcast SEO and how
to grow your podcast and how togrow your audience and what kind
of content to have on a podcast.
Then from an organic marketingone, we're also going to talk
about blogging.
So.
SEO for blogs and how many wordsdoes my blog posts need to be?
(04:38):
And how often do I need to blogand what makes a really great
blog post?
And then also email marketing.
Because if we're going to putall this time and effort into
creating content, we want tomake sure that we find a way to
connect with that person.
Who's finding our content.
And get them onto our email listso that we can continue to
(04:58):
nurture them.
So in the email section, you'llsee things like how to create an
opt in and how to grow youremail list with SEO and how to
get your first hundredsubscribers and all sorts of
things like that.
So that's what I want you tothink about.
When you're really trying togrow your podcast is who are you
helping?
I help small business owners.
Most are solo preneurs.
(05:20):
Um, often coaches coursecreators realtors.
A few of you are brick andmortar businesses, but you're,
most of you have an onlinepresence as the main part of
your business.
Most of you are a single solopreneur.
Maybe you have an assistant or aVA, but you have not yet built
out a team.
You're doing the work yourself.
(05:42):
You are still like me at thestage in your business where
you're doing the work you havenot yet handed it off to a team.
The thought of handing all ofthis off to a team probably
sounds amazing.
But you're not quite there yet.
We're working on it.
We're getting that.
Foundation in place so that youcan get ready to hand off more
(06:02):
of the work to the team.
And so what I do is really tryto focus on.
Strategic.
Content and strategies that youcan implement right away and
things that are quick.
So that's why most of myepisodes are 10 to 15 minutes.
You're busy.
You don't have a lot of time tospend listening.
I also am not going to give youa bunch of stories and anecdotes
(06:23):
about.
Life like, oh gosh, it'sWednesday morning.
And I just dropped my kid off atschool and I did this and we're
going to spend 15 minutestalking about that because
that's not why you're here.
That's not the reason thatyou're listening to this
podcast.
You probably know I have a kidhe's nine he's in the fourth
grade.
He's at school.
I'm working.
My focus right now is work as,is yours.
(06:44):
Since you're listening to thisepisode.
Okay.
The next thing we want to thinkabout.
Is consistency.
One of the biggest mistakes thatI see people making is with the
blog and the social and thepodcast and all of it.
Is just not maintainingconsistency.
If you want your blog traffic togrow, you want your podcast to
(07:05):
grow.
You have to be consistent.
You have to prioritize yourcontent creation.
And publication.
On a consistent basis.
So for me, I schedule out mycontent.
Once a week and I do my contentplanning at the beginning of the
(07:26):
year.
I don't do the entire year atonce, but I do at least a
quarter at a time.
The beginning of the year, Igenerally do through June.
And then I'll do like Julythrough December later in the
year, because I kind of like tosee what's working.
What's not what's resonating.
Are there any things that Ishould shift or switch around,
making sure that I'm hitting onthat once a week content and the
(07:49):
reason we want once a week is wewant to really end up in
someone's schedule.
We want to.
Be a part of their life.
Like.
If you've listened to thispodcast for a while.
You know that every Tuesdaymorning there is a new podcast
episode and it is there likeclockwork.
And it has been since February1st, 2023, when it launched
(08:11):
every single Tuesday, you havehad an episode to listen to.
Now, you also know that I take abreak over the holidays and I
run a handful of best ofepisodes during that holiday
break period.
This year, I believe you'regoing to get two of them last
year.
I think you got three or four,so there's content.
Every week, whether I'm there ornot.
(08:33):
And the reason that we do thatis we want to be part of
someone's routine.
I want you to know.
And trust that on Tuesday, there's going to be an episode
of the simple SEO podcast, because you've told me.
That you look forward to it andit helps you.
And you're excited to listen tothe new episode each week.
So I want to make sure I'm therefor you.
The way that I do that.
(08:54):
Is that I preplan and Iprerecord so full transparency.
This episode, I believe iscoming out in December.
And it's August 28th.
And it's still 190 billiondegrees here in Tucson.
But I'm recording these becauseI want to get them batched.
I want to know that they'reready to go because I've got
(09:16):
some other big priorities I wantto work on during Q4.
So I'm getting ahead on mycontent and I love to be able to
do that.
So I've got my blog posts, myemails.
And I'm down to the last fivepodcast episodes of 20, 24 that
I'm hoping to get recorded todayor tomorrow at the latest, so
that everything is ready to go.
(09:38):
And then I can focus on.
Really working on some of thecourse development over the next
couple of months.
So that consistency is importantin the way that you get the
consistency is by pre-planningand batching and working ahead
that way.
You don't end up looking up andbeing in a panic mode of, oh my
gosh.
I need to record something todayand I don't know what I'm going
(09:58):
to record.
And I have no topic idea and Ihave no keywords and I have
nothing ready to go.
So if you're facing that oryou're struggling with it, and
you really want someone to helpguide you in your like yeah,
Rachel, this would be great, butI don't have that dialed in.
Join me in simple podcast, SEO,because that's exactly what I
teach you.
How to do I walk you through.
(10:19):
How often to podcast, I walk youthrough how to do your batching,
how to like every step of theway.
If you want to do the same thingfor your blog.
And your website, then the classyou need is simple, simple SEO
content.
And I teach you the same thing, how to really get all of this
done and put it into a smoothprocess.
(10:40):
That's going to help you stayconsistent because.
Consistency is going to be thekey to your success more than
almost anything else that youcould do.
And now.
Let's talk about a couple ofvery strategic.
Um, tactical things that you cando today to work on your next
episode.
So SEO keywords.
(11:01):
I'm sure you've heard me talkabout them like a million times,
because keywords are critical toyour success with Google, with a
podcast search engines onPinterest.
If you are still on socialmedia.
Keywords are the key todiscoverability on Instagram and
Tik TOK and LinkedIn and all thedifferent social channels as
well.
They're all getting into.
(11:23):
Search engine optimization.
They're all starting to usekeywords to really help.
Identify and pool content andput it in front of audiences.
So for your podcast.
I want you to focus on choosingkey words for your podcast,
episode titles.
And I want you to choose onethat I would tell you, you
cannot use for Google, Google.
(11:45):
If you've listened to myepisodes on Google search and
Google keywords.
And I said, that's just too big.
It's too competitive.
You can't rank for that.
That's actually probably onethat you can try to rank for in
your podcast, but you also wantto look for one that we would
talk about being more of a longtail.
So for example, Let's just saythat we're doing one on shoes.
(12:08):
Cause I always give shoes as theexample, when we talk about SEO
keywords.
So shoes is generally a terriblekeyword from a Google SEO
standpoint because it's socompetitive.
It's going to be incredibly hardto rank for the person who
searching it.
Doesn't really know what they'relooking for yet.
Anyway.
Like, it's just not a goodkeyword, even though there's a
million searches a month for it.
(12:28):
So from an SEO standpoint fromGoogle, we would go way down the
sales funnel and we would getmuch more detailed.
And so we'd go through likeshoes and women's shoes and then
women's running shoes.
And then maybe we'd get intowomen's Asics gel.
Kiano running shoes.
So let's take that same shoesone, and let's pretend that we
are doing a podcast on shoes.
(12:50):
And so we're going to talk aboutshoe trends for 2025.
Finding the perfect.
Running shoe for your elementaryschool kid.
And so in that shoes would be akeyword shoe trends for 2025
could be a keyword.
And running shoes for elementarystudents could be a keyword.
(13:12):
So you actually couldpotentially have three different
keywords in that one title basedon how you've written it.
So, what I want you to thinkabout is one fat head term.
So a fat head term is just thatit's like a single keyword, like
shoes.
SEO blog, et cetera.
And then when long tail and along tail keyword tends to be.
(13:36):
Three to five, maybe even six,it's kind of a phrase that all
strings together.
So in the shoes example, It waspotentially shoe trends for
2025.
Cause that could be a long tailone that also incorporates our
short tail.
Choose.
And it was running shoes forelementary kids or elementary
(13:56):
students.
Both of those are long tail.
So when you use keywords likethat, Two.
You put them in your title andyou put them in your show notes,
your description, you increasethe potential for visibility for
your podcast episode.
When you put them in your shownotes page, and you've done your
verification, like I teach youhow to do to make sure that you
(14:16):
can rank for Google.
You actually now have a chanceto get more visibility in Google
search engine.
To your podcast, show notes, blog post.
If you do it the way I teach youhow to do it in simple podcast,
SEO, because now you'repotentially getting new people
to your podcast through Google, because they're searching for
something like shoe trends for2025.
(14:38):
And your podcast show notes pageis showing up.
So now they're reading your blogpost or the reading, your show
notes page, which should be ablog post style page.
And if you're embedding yourpodcast episode in your page,
Now they're also being able tolisten to your podcasts.
They are on your website.
Or they're finding out aboutyour podcast and coming over and
(15:00):
listening to it in their app ofchoice.
Okay.
Now, how does all of this workwhen we've done the
optimization?
And using the keywords.
There are three different placesthat your podcasts can show up
in apple podcasts.
And we do talk mostly aboutapple podcasts because it's the
most popular podcast app.
You can show up in top results, you can show up and shows and
(15:23):
you can show up in episodes.
So in top results, your show canshow up multiple times because
it can have many episodes thatshow up for that particular
keyword.
The same thing with episodes inthe episodes tab, you can show
up multiple times in the showstab.
You can only show up oncebecause you only have one
podcast that's ranking for thatkeyword.
(15:43):
The other places you can do.
The other things you can do.
To help grow your audience.
Would be by guesting on othershows, really doing podcast
guest pitching and trying tobuild your audience that way.
By sharing about your podcastinggroups, where it's allowed.
Um, things like that.
So there's a lot that you can doto really grow your audience.
(16:05):
If you want to learn more, Iwant you to take simple podcast
SEO, because that's going toteach you how to do the
optimization side of it.
Uh, to really improve yourshow's visibility if you've been
podcasting for a while, andyou're not seeing the growth
that you were hoping for, thenlet's work on optimizing that
show because when I did it,cause I was there with you a
year or so ago, I was rightthere with you.
(16:26):
And I was very frustratedbecause I loved podcasting, but
I wasn't seeing the growth.
But since I started applyingwhat I'm teaching you here.
I have seen my downloads.
Go five X.
I also now have a top 10% rankedpodcast and it continues to grow
every month.
(16:47):
So my goal is to get it intothat top five, that top one,
we'll see where it ends up, butit's now cracked the top 10%.
And I'm really happy about thatbecause this is a very niche
podcast.
I could easily have higherrankings or higher.
You know, global rankings.
If I had something that wasn'tquite so niche, so to be a top
(17:07):
10% podcast globally.
On something as niche, as SEOfor small business owners and
coaches, and course creators.
I'm really happy with that.
So if you're ready to getstarted, join me in simple
