Speaker 1 (00:02):
Hi everyone and
welcome back to another episode
of the Simple Nutrition InsightsPodcast.
I'm your host, leonila Campos, registered dietitian, business
owner and passionate believerthat small, sustainable steps
can lead to big healthtransformations.
Today we're diving into a topicthat touches nearly everyone
(00:22):
skin health and aging butthrough a lens you may not have
heard before inflammation.
I'm thrilled to join by Dr Ebru, a world-renowned immunologist
and the founder of Avexena and aworld-winning anti-inflammation
skincare and wellness brand.
Her work bridges science andskincare in such a unique way,
(00:43):
and today we'll be exploring howchronic inflammation affects
your skin, what the science saysand how nutrition plays a
powerful role in aging from theinside out.
Dr Ebru, welcome to the show.
I'm so excited to have you here.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
Thank you so much for
having me, Leo.
It's amazing to be here.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
Yeah, thank you for
taking that.
I mean you're so busy so Iappreciate your time.
Thank you, yeah.
So let's start.
You have such a fascinatingbackground in immunology and
science.
Can you tell us a little bitabout your journey and maybe
what inspired you to createAvicenna?
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Sure, avicenna was
born out of both, you know,
scientific conviction andpersonal necessity.
And I'm an immunologist bytraining and I researched nearly
two decades in molecularmedicine and how inflammation
affects the immune system.
But it was when I startedpersonally experiencing, you
(01:46):
know, chronic acne and how itimpacted me both on a health
level and the mental level.
Then I realized there's like adeeper void in the skincare,
because brands like to targetmore wrinkles and blemishes and
make it go away for a while.
But few understood what are thepossible inflammatory triggers
(02:08):
or is there a stress-relatedfactor involved in it?
And we created the Resina tofocus on signs of inflammation
and to cater to even the mostsensitive skin.
Cater to even the mostsensitive skin.
And every formula we create isguided by scientific inputs and
(02:31):
cutting edge discoveries.
And because skin health isabout wellness.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
Yeah, Thank you so
much for sharing that journey
and just the science background,it's such a great segue right
to go into the anti-inflammation.
So you've become known for yourwork in anti-inflammation.
Can you explain what this termmeans and how inflammation
accelerates the aging process, especially for our skin?
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Definitely so.
First of all, these daysinflammation has been termed as
something bad, but inflammationis.
We need to distinguish whichinflammation is bad.
So the acute systemicinflammation is good because it
keeps us alive, it defeats thebacteria and helps the healing
mechanism.
(03:22):
And inflammation is one ofthose bad guys we don't like
because it's a term we use inimmunology to describe the
low-grade, micro-grade, chronicinflammation that silently
builds up in our bodies as weage.
And anti-inflammation isdefining that, you know, like a
(03:42):
skincare that um combats againstsigns of inflammation.
So inflammation is actuallycoming up with two words
inflammation plus aging, um.
So another question is everybodyasks okay, so we know we have
inflammation.
Because how does, how do we getit Right?
(04:04):
So it lingers under the surface, it's silent, you don't see it,
but it's triggered by stress, pollution, poor diet or even
harsh skincare, with a zilliondifferent steps right.
So what does it do, you may ask?
Inflammation acceleratescollagen breakdown, it weakens
(04:26):
the skin barrier, it disruptsthe skin microbiome, and that's
only the skin issue, but itaffects overall our body.
So what we put in our body, what we eat, how we treat
ourselves during stress, thoseare all very important and over
time the signs of inflammationwould show up as premature aging
(04:49):
, like fine lines, dullness, dryness, sensitivity.
And when we say a skincare thatworks against signs of
inflammation, it focuses on andthe main goal is to visibly
soothe or strengthen and restorethe skin's balance.
(05:09):
By that way, if you arepreventing, trying to prevent
these stress-inducing aging oraggressors, let's call you may
be able to slow down the signsof these inflammation, these
unwanted signs that would createsensitivities and make you
(05:31):
unhappy in the long run,absolutely.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
And I think, at least
talking from experience right,
when I see fine lines right or awrinkle here and there, it's
something that is so powerfuland you look for things right to
help you.
And you know, when we thinkabout the triggers right, and as
(05:56):
a dietician, I talk a lot abouthow nutrition influences
inflammation.
What are some of the biggestways you've seen food and
lifestyle habits impact the skin, both either positively or
negatively?
Speaker 2 (06:09):
Well, negatively.
One of the biggest hiddentriggers is excess sugar and bad
eating habits, you know.
High carbohydrates, because itcan cause glycation, which can
damage the collagen andaccelerates the skin aging.
And another one would be havinghigh fatty foods, because they
(06:36):
may tip the inflammatory balanceby increasing the fat tissue in
your body.
Also, skipping meals, eatingnothing all day or eating very,
then overloading yourself thatwould also both starve your skin
of essential nutrients.
Also, you will end up with lotsof insulin spikes, which you
(06:59):
don't want.
And finally, the alcohol andcaffeine overuse.
Like you know, I love coffee, don't get me wrong, but the
overuse of it can dehydrate andirritate the skin, because
usually when we're drinkingcoffee we forget to drink water.
So that's not good either.
So it's not about we can't beperfect, that's for sure.
(07:21):
I mean, we're going to have it,we'll have a little bit, you
know, sugar or coffee, whatnot, but it's all about the awareness
.
So even doing small tweaks canmake a profound difference in
how your skin and body feels.
So those positive foods I likeis I love any foods.
(07:45):
Or like vegetables or fruitswith high in vitamin C, omega-3,
fatty acids, I love the zinc, selenium rich foods, polyphenols
and fermented fruits, forexample blueberries,
pomegranates they're packed withskin protective antioxidants.
(08:05):
Salmon, flaxseed they help tosupport the lipid barrier.
Leafy greens I love leafygreens because they're both
refreshing and filling, but theycome up with their own minerals
and vitamins.
Also, probiotics and fermentedfoods like kefir or kimchi can
(08:27):
help with the microbiome balance, especially the gut microbiome
balance.
So having all these incombination and in balance help
the skin and the body to buildmore resilience against
environmental aggressors.
You know, and this helps fromcollagen synthesis to
(08:48):
inflammation regulation.
Speaker 1 (08:51):
Yeah, thank you for
giving us that list right of
foods that positively affect umor help right, and also the ones
that are not so positive.
But, as you mentioned right, wedon't have to just not have
them, but is the amount right, creating that balance?
Uh, that is going to help withour inflammation too, and
(09:11):
eventually with our um, with ourskin health.
So Avicenna's formulas areincredibly science-driven.
What makes your approachdifferent when it comes to
anti-inflammatory skincare?
Speaker 2 (09:24):
Well, one of the
things is we look at every
ingredient and look at theirscientific background, how it
works with the skin, if theyhave any pros or cons and that
kind of thing.
So after we decide whichingredients we're going to use,
we try to test as much aspossible to see if they're going
(09:49):
to work together 100%.
You know, that's another thing, because we don't believe in
having one hero ingredient inthe skincare.
We want to use as effective aspossible and as many as possible
ingredients in there so youdon't end up using too many
(10:10):
products on your face.
So that's one of the differenceand we formulate our products
to be multitasking and to solvevarious problems at one time, so
you don't have to use like 10different creams to solve 10
different problems.
(10:31):
Because the one of the things isthat because the more you touch
your face or the more youoverload your skin with five
different creams on top of eachother, I mean we can say it's
going to get suffocated.
You know your skin is going toget suffocated and you don't
want that.
So the point is also we avoidcommon sensitizers and we love
(10:55):
the bioactives and naturalactives.
And the one point is we do notwant to compromise on luxury and
sensorial experience, but wewant 100 percent effectivity.
So it's not.
We're not fighting the age, youknow.
(11:15):
We're not ageism, we are.
We believe in supporting theskin's longevity and calm and
the clarity and um you know, asa preventative way to have a
longer time of wellness.
That that's the best part.
Speaker 1 (11:41):
Yeah, I love that.
I love that your product andphilosophy really emphasized
both internal and external care.
What we put on our skin andwhat we nourish our bodies with
play a huge role in essentiallythe aging process and how we are
going to feel.
If someone listening wanted tocreate a simple
inflammation-reducing routine tosupport their skin through both
skincare and food, what wouldthat look like?
Speaker 2 (12:05):
Well, let's start
with the food, Because whatever
we eat, it shows up.
Unfortunately, If you have toomuch ice cream, it's going to
show up as fat uh, you know thatkind of thing.
So in the morning I love a nicewarm lemon water and then um an
omega-3 plant rich breakfast.
(12:27):
You can go with chia pudding, with berries or, if you like to
have protein egg whites, I loveegg whites.
And in the morning also, inaddition to what you eat, your
skincare should be a gentlecleanse and then, depending on
the season, you can go with avery light serum, like the serum
(12:50):
we have, the MicrolG Immune B3serum, and continue with your
SPF.
It's a very, very hot day, orif it's winter, I would highly
recommend doing the serum andthen adding the cream on to
prevent the trans-epidermalwater loss from your skin and
our Ageist Perfection Cream isperfect for that and then
definitely add your SPF always.
(13:13):
So the midday, definitely go forherbal teas or if you like your
coffee, have your coffee.
But I like an antioxidant richlunch, like quinoa, greens,
roasted vegetables.
I love olive oil, a good oliveoil.
You can go.
If you like your meats, you cango for a chicken or a fish.
(13:34):
And in the evening I like doinglighter meals if possible.
That's why I like salads a lotin the evening these days I love
carrot salad.
I don't know why.
I think my body is craving forit.
What I do is I grate it, put alittle bit olive oil and add
(13:54):
some lemon juice and there we go.
I just munch on the carrotsalad and it makes me happy, and
um, of course always drink yourwater and then uh for the
skincare.
Remove, uh, the impurities thatcomes from the day, uh, with a
gooder, and then follow up withyour routine skincare routine
(14:18):
and at that time the skincareyou do at night works better
than during the day, becauseyou're going to calm down and
you're going to sleep, and thisis the time where your skin
takes a breather from the dailystress and your body starts on
the repair journey.
So I definitely say remove theimpurities with the gentle
(14:40):
cleanser, add your serum, addyour facial cream, do your eye
concentrate and then go to bed.
And if you want to go with asupplement, definitely you can
do a deep sleep supported bymagnesium, something like that.
(15:00):
So this is my routine, I likethis routine and I think this
resonates with a lot of people.
Speaker 1 (15:06):
Right, yeah, I love
the emphasis on the different
anti-inflammatory foods, right.
Different anti-inflammatoryfoods, right, and how you're
keeping yourself hydratedthroughout the day, either with
some herbal tea or some water, some, you know, some of those
fruits and vegetables thatyou're adding, and there's
nothing.
You know that we can say it'stoo complicated, right, and it's
(15:27):
something that we candefinitely do on a consistent
basis.
And then, of course, thedescription of how to take care
of your skin right, it'sdefinitely a question that has
come to mind.
Okay, how do I take better careof my skin?
So, thank you for sharing thosetips and the specific products
that you use, too.
We know that gut-brain-skinaccess is real and that stress,
(15:52):
pro-digestion and lack of sleepcan show up on our skin.
What are some holistic wellnesspractices you recommend to
support skin from the inside?
Speaker 2 (16:02):
Well, we talked about
the food aspect, but there's
also the mental aspect, and whenwe say mental, people tend to
think that, oh, am I mental?
Like?
Are we talking about mentaldiseases?
No, I don't know how else toexplain it, but stress puts a
lot of pressure on and on thebrain and on your soul.
(16:25):
So that's why the best way Ican summarize it as mental, but
uh, you, we all need a break, alittle bit break, and this could
be a little walk around theneighborhood or play with your
dog, or even a 10 minutemeditation and um, telling
yourself everything is going tobe fine at the end of the day,
(16:48):
because the brain is designed toworry and have anxiety, and our
monkey brain never stopstalking, unfortunately, and all
that affects your cortisol.
It raises up.
As the cortisol goes up, thereis more pressure on the immune
system, right?
So that's why I would highlyrecommend taking at least five
(17:12):
minutes, 10 minutes break, soyou can have your time off.
Speaker 1 (17:18):
Yeah, thank you so
much for sharing those tips.
And you know, as a dieticiantoo, stress is something that we
talk about and like how to helplower those levels, right.
So I love the simple tips likehey, take a five minute walk, do
some meditation, play with yourdog, right.
I think that's such a profoundway to just kind of disconnect
(17:41):
right from all the stress thatis happening.
So thank you for sharing that.
Are there any common mythsabout skincare or anti-aging
that you wish people would stopbelieving?
Speaker 2 (17:55):
oh god, uh, stop
following the tiktok trends.
I tell those everywhere pleasestop following the tiktok trends
.
And I I think it was the otherday I saw it on a lyric group uh
, did a scientific publicationon how, um, the tic-tac-trens
are hurting the teenager skinand how they're ending up going
(18:18):
to dermatologists even more thanbefore kind of common sense.
But if we need a publication toexplain that to the world,
please be my guest.
Write more.
You know we need more.
So there's that.
And stop doing like 10 stepskincare routines.
That doesn't help.
(18:38):
You don't need five, sixdifferent creams to solve five
different problems.
A good cream or a good skincareroutine would be formulated in
a way that you wouldn't needthat.
So do your homework.
Read the ingredients, read thewhen you're purchasing it, read
the product page, read thereviewer comments.
(19:01):
You know they will tell you howthey feel and what was the
result sometimes.
So I would highly recommendthat too.
And you know, keep your moneyto yourself.
Don't buy five different creams.
Go for the one that has all themultitasking, multifunctioning
aspects of things.
So, one, you're spending lessmoney in the long run.
(19:24):
Two, you are going to have lesssensitivity because you're
using less product on your face.
So that's the whole thing.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
Yeah, thank you again
for just mentioning that not to
follow for what someone with amillion followers or whatever is
doing, that might be not sohealthy or dangerous, which
which I find it to you, as youknow, in the nutrition aspect of
it as well.
But when my clients tell me, oh, I'm trying these because I saw
(19:55):
it on tiktok and I'm like, howcan I put it in a nice way, that
is, you know, not healthy, butyou know it's difficult, you
know, to it's sometimes tocompete with, like, the masses,
and so sometimes a publicationright might help.
Oh yeah, that's interesting.
What are your personalnon-negotiables when it comes to
(20:20):
skincare and nutrition?
Speaker 2 (20:23):
Oh, non-negotiables,
definitely my cleanser and my
cream and my face oil some days.
So we have really good cleanserat Avicenna and our face oil
has been designed to workagainst all the signs of
inflammation with the peptidesand Bokuchiol.
So I love those three.
You know those are mynon-negotiables.
And for the nutrition thesedays, carrot salad, but
(20:51):
unfortunately I love my coffee,so a good coffee that's, I have
to have it in the morning.
But anything in moderation, youknow I'm gonna put it that way.
Uh, I try to go as much asorganic as I can.
Unfortunately sometimes it'snot available or sometimes it's
too expensive, even today.
So I try to select the bestfoods possible out there.
(21:12):
You know, salads, fruits,vegetables.
I try to go that way.
Speaker 1 (21:21):
Yeah, thank you so
much for sharing that too.
And, as you mentioned towardsthe beginning, beginning right
like.
It doesn't have to be likeeliminating those foods that
maybe we enjoy.
Right is the amount.
So are we drinking coffee allday long and like not hydrating
right versus like?
Okay, I'm gonna have my cup ofcoffee and and that is it, and
(21:42):
my other hydrating foods toothat's great.
Keeping it simple and balanced, yes, um.
So what's coming up next foryou and avicenna?
Any new launches or innovationswe should be excited about?
Speaker 2 (21:56):
oh yeah, we
definitely have a new launch and
actually it launched like welaunched it four or five days
ago.
We didn't do a big fuss aboutit, to be honest, because I was
too excited to put it out there, because the results are
fantastic.
And the name is Anka Face andBody Treatment System and it's
(22:17):
basically a LED light therapywith red LED light, blue and
pink, and it has radiofrequencyEMS ultrasound and it has
radiofrequency EMS ultrasound.
And one of the key differencesthan any other equipment that's
out there because it combinesboth the LED light with the
radiofrequency therapy andultrasound is this you can use
(22:40):
it both on your face and yourbody.
So most of the devices like notmost of them, all of the
devices out there only focuseson the face, but your skin
doesn't end on your face.
Your body is aging too, so whynot show the same love to the
body as well and the body whenthe levels of from one to five
(23:05):
are ideal for the body, becauseit can work on the, the work of
cellulite, how it becomes unevenwhen you have a fatty tissue
underneath.
It helps with those.
So that is one of the cuttingedge stuff we have right now and
we have designed two gels forthat.
(23:26):
One of them is the Hydrosculptface gel and it's different than
the conductive gels in the waythat we added the peptides and
all that you need in anyskincare you would like, so you
can use it even as a face gel.
You don't need to always use itwith the device.
(23:48):
Same for the body.
That's ShapeLift conductivebody gel and that has caffeine
in it, guanara and that kind ofother ingredients, niacinamide
and peptides To help with thesigns of inflammation on the
body and also the uneven lookthat this machine is fighting
(24:09):
against.
So yeah, that's one cool littledevice and you can use it
everywhere.
Speaker 1 (24:15):
That's fascinating,
yeah, especially if you're
traveling right or you just wantto take it with you.
That's amazing, awesome.
Well, also fascinating andamazing.
Dr Ebru, thank you so much forsharing your time, your science
and your passion with us today.
I think so many of ourlisteners are walking away with
a deeper understanding of howtheir daily habits from what
(24:38):
they eat to how they managestress impact their skin more
than they realize.
If you're listening and you'recurious to explore Avicenna's
science-backed inflammationtargeting skincare, head to
wwwavicennacom.
I'll also drop the link in theshow notes and if you enjoyed
today's episode, be sure tosubscribe, leave a review and
(25:00):
share.
Share it with a friend who'sready to glow inside and out.
Dr Eru, any final thoughts, anything else that you would
like to share to the listeners?
Speaker 2 (25:11):
Definitely.
I mean skincare has beenreflected to us as a luxury.
It's not.
It is your time off, and it isyour time off and saying to the
world I respect myself, I lovemyself and I'm going to be
resilient against all of you.
So it's not just about beauty,it's just really taking care of
(25:34):
yourself.
Speaker 1 (25:36):
Mic drop.
Yeah, thank you so much, and Ilove that you say that it's not
about luxury, right?
We all have skin and so we allhave a face and so we definitely
need to take care of it and, atthe end of the day, what's the
best thing to do that and dothat right?
So amazing.
Until next time, I'm leonielacampos, and this is simple
nutrition insights.
Thank you so much.
(25:56):
Take care, friends, bye.
