Shure MV7 & C922 Pro Stream (00:00):
Hi, and welcome back to the simple
SEO podcast today.
I want to address a questionthat I've gotten quite often
since I've started talking aboutpodcast SEO, and that is.
How do you start a podcast?
Like if I'm a beginner and I'mhearing about SEO and podcast
SEO, and I'm excited about itand like the idea, but I don't

(00:22):
have a podcast yet.
How do I figure out how to startone, Rachel?
So let's jump right in.
If you don't yet have a podcastfor your business, then I want
you to think about adding onebecause.
A podcast is a really good way.
To connect with your audienceand it allows you to connect and

(00:44):
build a better relationship thanjust having static content or
words on a page.
Does.
Like your blog now, your blog isstill going to be incredibly
important from a search engineoptimization standpoint, to get
traffic to your website, to helppeople find you.
But your podcast can really helpyou nurture that connection.

(01:04):
Once they find you, they startto like you, they start to know
you a little bit better and theystart to trust you.
And because of that, it canreally, really help your
business grow.
So when you're starting apodcast, I want you to think
about a couple things.
One is, are you starting apodcast because you want it, you
want to do it for fun or are youstarting it because you want it

(01:28):
to help your business.
You want it to be part of yourmarketing funnel.
You want to use it to bringpeople into your world and to
connect with them.
So that's your first questionis, is this going to be for fun
or is it for business?
If it's for fun, you can take avery different approach than if
it's for business.
If it's for business, you reallywant to be strategic with it.

(01:50):
And you want to make sure thatyou choose.
You choose the best topics andthe best name and all of that.
So that it really can succeedand grow.
If you're just doing it for fun,for entertainment, just you and
a friend are doing it, or you'redoing it on your own.
You don't have to take quite thesame strategic approach with it.
So then I want you to thinkabout what are you going to

(02:12):
cover on your podcast?
Now, I generally recommend.
That you choose like four areasthat are related to your core
subject or your business, whatservices you offer, what
products you sell, et cetera.
When it's for a business, because that allows us to really
touch on content.
That's going to be.

(02:34):
Interesting to your audience,it's going to be helpful.
It's going to provide value.
And it's also going to make surethat the people who are finding
the podcast.
Are interested in the subjectthat you, um, that your business
does, that you sell theproducts, the services, et
cetera.
So we really want to make surethat we're staying in our own
lane.
And we're picking areas thatmake sense for our ideal

(02:56):
customer.
So like for example, my podcast,I generally talk about search
engine optimization for yourwebsite.
I talk about search engineoptimization for your blog.
I talk about SEO for yourpodcast.
I talk about email listbuilding.
Um, and I talk a little bitabout sales funnels and the
reason that I do that.
It's that's what I haveexperienced in it's where my

(03:19):
background is.
But it's also.
What I teach and what I sell.
So I offer a course on SEOthat's for your website and your
blog.
I offer a course on podcast SEO.
I am developing a course onemail list building and I will
be.
Developing a course or a groupcoaching program.
I'm not a hundred percent sure,but I will be developing a

(03:40):
program on creating aprofitable.
Sales funnel as well.
So that's why that's what Iteach on because it all ties
back to the business.
And so I want you to think aboutthat.
What I want to talk about, whatare you an expert in what ties
back to your business, etcetera.
Then I want you to think aboutwhat are you going to name your.

(04:03):
It's going to be important, especially if you're doing this
for business.
You want to choose a name?
That isn't super closely relatedto any other podcast names out
there.
You don't want to choose a namethat somebody else is already
using.
So make sure you're checking inthe podcast apps to be sure that
you're not picking somethingthat someone else has.
And you want to try to use akeyword in there, and we've

(04:25):
talked a lot about keywords andwhat they are.
Keywords are words that yourideal customer.
Would use when searching.
So if you choose a podcast namethat has a keyword in it, you
have a better chance of rankingin the podcast apps.
And that means you're going tohave a better chance of people
finding you.
So for example, My podcast nameis simple.

(04:48):
SEO.
SEO is obviously the mainkeyword there.
I went with simple SEO becausemy branding for my business is
all simple podcast, SEO, simpleSEO content, simple list,
building simple email marketing,et cetera, everything has that
simple name with it.
So that's why the podcast issimple.
SEO.

(05:09):
You really want to think aboutwhat keywords your ideal
customer would use now?
If you're say a parenting coach,and you're a parenting coach for
a specific niche or specific agegroup, you want to use those
keywords in your podcast name aswell.
So if you work with parents oftoddlers, parents of newborns,

(05:30):
tweens children on the spectrum,excetera.
You want to incorporate thatbecause that's another great
keyword that's going to helpsomebody find your podcast.
And when they find your podcastand they listen, you're able to
help them.
Now I want you to think about.
What kind of episodes you wantto create on your podcast?

(05:52):
Do you want to do solo shows?
Like that's like what I do, I dosolo shows where it's me
teaching something and I try tokeep them really short so that
they're quick.
And they're actionable for you.
Do you want to do interviews?
Do you want to share coachingcalls a mix of all of the above?
It really is up to you.
It's your choice.
What you're comfortable with.
I don't do interviews on herebecause they don't work really

(06:15):
well with my audience.
But also interviews.
Provide interviews lead to morescheduling challenges and
hassles and people schedulingand rescheduling and changing.
And.
I do the podcast and I try tobatch my episodes.
Once a month.
And so it's easier for me justto be able to set aside an hour

(06:36):
or two to record.
My podcast episodes versushaving to try to coordinate with
other people and do interviewepisodes.
So think about which format youlike, what you want to do.
If you want to have multiplepeople on, if you want to do
all.
Um, interviews, if you want todo it yourself, whatever you

(06:56):
want it really, there is nowrong answer.
You just need to choose.
What's going to work for thebest for you.
The other thing you want tothink about is how or your
episode's going to be sopersonally.
Because I'm doing SEO on mypodcast and I want it to be
discovered by new people.
My episode short and sweet.
My aim is for 10 to 15 minutesbecause.

(07:18):
About it from the listenerperspective, if somebody new is
looking in the podcast app andthey're seeing my show and it
says it's 47 minutes or it's anhour and a half.
They're less likely to commit tolistening to that than if it
says it's 10 minutes or it's 12minutes.
It's easier to get somebody.
It's a smaller lift.

(07:38):
It's like, oh, okay.
This is a 10 minute episode.
Let me check it out and see whatit's about.
That does make a difference.
So we do want to think aboutlike how long is our ideal
podcast episode.
I really would not recommendlike an hour because.
Most people aren't going tolisten for an hour, unless it's
really super engaging.

(07:59):
The next thing you want to thinkabout is like, what are your
episodes going to be about?
So we talked about like, whattype content you're going to
have, what categories, but nowyou really want to think about
what are the actual episode.
Names, what are you actuallygoing to talk about?
So what I do.
As I do a mix of things.
When I'm looking for ideas, Ilook for content that I can

(08:20):
create.
Um, I look for blood posts thatI have that don't have a podcast
episode where I can update that.
Because I've had my blog forfive years longer than I've had
the podcast.
So there are blog posts thatI've created that are really
great, that don't yet have apodcast episode.
So that's part of it.
I look for keywords I'd like torank for, I look for.

(08:41):
Questions that I get from mylisteners.
Um, I looked to see what some ofthe competition is doing.
Is there something that they'veaddressed that maybe I haven't
addressed that I should look at?
And I also look at what performsthe best over time.
What type episodes does myaudience like the best.
That's what I create.
So when you sit down to do yourcontent calendar, I want you to

(09:04):
think about that.
And really make sure.
Okay.
I'm under the blogging bucket.
What type podcast episode couldI create about blogging?
That would be the most helpfulto my audience.
And have the best chance ofranking.
Then you want to think about howyou're going to title your
episodes and it's going to beimportant to use keywords.

(09:24):
Not only are you using keywordsin your podcast name, but now
you want to use keywords in yourepisode title, because again,
The keyword is what somebody isgoing to be searching for.
So that's a visibility it's justhelping you get your podcast
episode found by new listeners.
That's really all it is.
If you're not sure how to do allof this, I want you to get the

(09:46):
beginner's guide to podcast SEO.
It's on my website at thefreebies tab, that's edge
marketing.com forward slashfreebies.
That's going to have moreinsights and information along
with a checklist.
That'll kind of help you makesure you're doing what you need
to do for podcast SEO.
Then you may be wondering whatequipment do I need?
Hey, Rachel, how do you actuallyrecord it?
So I record my podcast using aprogram called descript.

(10:11):
I like it because it's easy touse.
You record right into it.
You can do your audio and yourvideo.
There's an editor in there soyou can clean up if there's
issues, if you struggle with umsand.
It's like that it can clean itup for you.
I have that issue because I wentto journalism school and in my
public speaking class, Ourteacher teased that she was
going to beat the ums and AHSout of us, but she did.

(10:34):
So you'll very seldom.
Hear me say, um, or Aw.
But if you struggle withsomething like that, descript
can help you.
They clean it up, they take careof all of that.
And then I use Buzzsprout tohost my podcast.
So that's where I actuallyexport the file.
And I like the fact that there'san integration from descript
straight to Buzzsprout so that Idon't.

(10:55):
Play with any more technicalprograms than necessary because
you guys know I'm not the mosttechnical, I don't want to be
the most technical.
I do also use a high quality.
Microphone for the podcasts sothat I have better audio because
audio quality is reallyimportant to listeners.

(11:15):
So I do have a shore microphone.
I did buy that and invest in itspecifically when I was
launching the podcast.
But at that time, I had enoughmoney coming in from the
business to be able to afford todo that without taking it out of
like my personal account.
If you have the money to investin a good microphone, I highly

(11:35):
recommend that you can pickwhatever price point you want.
Do a little bit of research.
There are different microphonesthat are highly recommended for
podcasting the shore.
I believe it's the MV seven isthe one that I have, but there
are other options.
I like this one.
I think it's really good.
I've been using it for two yearsgoing on the third year.
So that's really.

(11:57):
Your ad is like, oh, what are wedoing?
We're going to create a podcast.
We're going to record it.
We're going to use a program torecord it and a PR program to
host it.
I do recommend that you pay forsomething like descript and
Buzzsprout, it just makes iteasier for you.
It's not expensive.
And it's going to help you.

(12:17):
Stay current on it becauseyou're not having to try to
piece it all together.
We're not MacGyvering this, youguys.
And a few other things that youwant to think about when you are
recording podcast episodes.
It's really important to find aquiet room to work in, to really
limit your background noise.
Now, you know, I have anine-year-old I love him to

(12:40):
pieces, but he's loud.
Especially if he's got a friendover or if he's watching
YouTube, you'll get the cutestgiggles in the background.
Because of that.
I very, very seldom record whenhe's at home with me, I
generally do my recordings whenhe's at school in the summers.
I do it when he's at summercamp.
I do try to batch my content.

(13:00):
That's another tip that I havefor you is batching.
Your content helps youimmensely.
So I am batch recording.
Four episodes for the month ofJanuary.
It's honestly, for being honest,it is December 3rd.
I'm trying to get this wrappedup before kiddo is on holiday
break and home with me for acouple of weeks.
And I don't want to miss a beat.

(13:21):
I want to make sure that whenyou come back.
From holiday, you have podcastepisodes waiting for you.
So it's important.
To do that.
Batching makes a difference forme.
And when I say batching, I gothrough.
And I generate my ideas one dayand I map out my calendar and
then I sit down and I record.
Four episodes at a time I setaside an hour or two and I

(13:43):
record my episodes and then I'llgo back and I'll update them and
I'll optimize them and I'll makesure that the blog posts are
good.
And I'll.
Put the links in with the videoor the audio clip and all of
that.
At another time, but by workingon the same thing for four
episodes at once, it makes itfaster.
And the reason I love batching.
I got sick in November.

(14:04):
I got very, very sick and I hada cough for five weeks.
And it made it really hard torecord anything because when I
would talk, I would startcoughing.
But I didn't have to panicbecause I had already batched
out.
All of my podcast episodesthrough the end of the year.
So even though I couldn't recordbecause of being sick and then

(14:27):
because of having that cough.
Everything worked out fine.
So I really like to be ahead ofthe curve.
With my podcast, batching.
A couple other things you wantto think about.
Are going to be your show notes.
What are you going to do forshow notes?
I always recommend that you do ashow notes, blog, post style

(14:47):
page.
You also want to think aboutyour cover art.
What are you going to do?
Are you going to do SEO on yourpodcast?
And then how are you going tolaunch and grow your podcast?
Now, if you want moreinformation on this, I will put
the link to.
The blog post that is the shownotes blog post page here, the
blog post that accompanies this.
It's going to walk you throughhow to think a little more about

(15:08):
your cover art.
