Shure MV7 (00:00):
Hi, and welcome back
to the simple SEO podcast.
I'm your host, RachelLindteigen, and I'm so glad to
have you here with me today.
So are you unknowingly makingthe biggest podcast SEO mistake?
The number one mistake that Isee podcasters make is not doing
SEO at all.
(00:21):
It may be that they don'trealize that it's even something
they can do or they don't knowhow.
They're intimidated.
They're afraid it's hard, likeGoogle, SEO can be.
But what I want you to know isthat waiting to do SEO on your
podcast is hurting your growthand your downloads the same as
waiting to do SEO on your blogor your website is hurting you.
(00:45):
It's the same thing inpodcasting.
So.
My friend, if you have a podcastor you're planning on launching
a podcast and you're notthinking about SEO, you are
making a huge mistake, and Iwant you to understand how
important this is.
It's also the same with yourblog or your website.
I want you to really understandthat.
(01:05):
SEO or search engineoptimization, it's about
visibility.
It's not a little something thatwe add on at the end.
It's something that we do in ourfoundation so that we can grow.
So what I want you to understandthat's really important is that
SEO impacts your.
(01:25):
Podcast or websites ability tobe found by the right people.
So when we're specific aboutpodcasting, let's just talk for
a minute about your name.
This is one of the things that Isee a lot of questions about.
And that's, how do I name mypodcast?
What do I name my podcast?
And what I always say is thatit's really important to be
(01:45):
clear, not clever or cute.
When we are thinking aboutnaming our show, we want to name
it for growth.
We want people to be able tofind it in the podcast apps,
which means we need to usekeywords.
Keywords are just simply thewords that your ideal customer
would use.
So I have a friend who has abeautiful podcast.
(02:08):
She originally named it aconversation with a friend or a
friend in your ear, somethinglike that.
It was sweet.
It was cute, but it reallydidn't tell us anything about
the content on that show.
And while we all want to have afriend, we all want to have
someone to listen to us or totalk to us.
It didn't help her idealcustomer find her because what
(02:30):
she was actually talking aboutin that podcast was menopause
and change of life and becomingan empty nester and all the
things that happen to women asthey enter that.
Second phase of their life wheretheir children are grown and
they're starting to leave thenest, they're going away to
college, they're getting jobs.
(02:51):
But somebody who saw a friend intheir ear in the podcast app
wasn't going to make thatconnection.
So because of that, she wasmissing out on potential
listeners and growth for herpodcast.
So.
I said, I love you.
I want this to succeed.
Your name is too cute.
You've got to make it somethingeasier to find.
(03:11):
So you, my friend, if you're ina situation like that and you
have a podcast or you'rethinking about a podcast and
you're like, this name is socreative, this is so fun.
I want you to change it, and Iknow it feels boring.
Mine is simple.
SEO, I mean, come on.
It definitely feels like aboring name, but it also tells
you exactly what it is.
(03:32):
It is SEO strategies that aresimple.
They're good for people who'vetried it before, who've run into
issues.
They're good for beginners.
I also talk about onlinemarketing, podcasting course
creators, coaches, solopreneurs,et cetera.
Like if you are.
As somebody who's an SEOprofessional, an expert who's
been in the industry for 20years like me, you're probably
(03:55):
not listening to this podcastbecause it's not designed for
you, and the name tells you thatyou're looking for the expert
conversations.
I want you to think about thatyourself as you're naming your
podcast or as you're thinking,oh, I wonder if I need to change
my podcast name.
So that's the first thing I wantyou to think about and to know
and understand, is that welloptimized podcast name using
(04:17):
keywords is really important toyour growth.
Now, the next things that wewanna do is make sure that you
are optimizing your show notesfor Google.
So rather than just publishingstandard show notes or a
transcript, I want you toactually.
Optimize those following Google,SEO best practices, because
(04:38):
again, that's gonna be forGoogle, it's not gonna be for
the podcast app.
And when we do podcast, SEO, theSEO, we do on our show, our
title, our descriptions, ourepisodes, et cetera.
That's all for the podcast appso that we show up in the app.
The SEO that we do on the blogpost or the show notes page on
our website, we do followingGoogle best practices.
(04:58):
So make sure you're using thecorrect SEO best practices based
on which part of your podcastyou are optimizing.
So create that optimized shownotes blog post page, and use
your beginner's guide to SEO tooptimize that.
Make sure you follow thechecklist.
You've got everything done inthe right way there.
(05:19):
Then the other thing that youwanna really think about.
Is using your keyword researchideas using your blog post.
So last week we talked about howto create a keyword list for
your website.
You can take that keyword listand use it to help with your
blog post titles.
As well as your podcast episodetitles.
(05:42):
Now remember, there may be aslight difference between the
keyword that you target inGoogle versus the keyword that
you target in the podcast app, because generally speaking, you
can rank for more competitivekeywords in the podcast app.
Like I rank really well for theword SEO in the podcast app.
But there's no way in the worldthat I'm gonna rank for SEO on
Google because we've talkedabout it before.
(06:02):
SEO is probably the single mostcompetitive niche because
everybody who's creating SEOcontent, who's targeting SEO is
an SEO expert, and most of theones who rank are the tools
because they create huge amountsof content.
I am never gonna rank for theword SEO on Google, and I'm okay
with that, but I do rank for itin the podcast app, and that's
(06:25):
what I want you to understand.
Like you may have differentkeywords based on which side of
it you are working on.
If you wanna learn really how tofigure all of this out, join me
in simple podcast, SEO to reallyfigure out how to optimize your
podcast.
And then simple, SEO content isthe one that's gonna teach you
what content to create and howto optimize it for your website
(06:46):
and your blog.
So we really wanna make surethat we're doing that.
So we're making sure that wehave a good keyword friendly
name for our podcast.
We are also optimizing ourpodcast show notes page so that
we can rank in Google.
And then the third thing I wantyou to do, I.
Is to make sure that you'reusing keywords in your episode
(07:07):
titles and descriptions so thatit's easy for people to find
your episodes in the podcastapp.
So for example, rather thancreating an episode and calling
it my favorite Easy Meal Hacks, you would call it How to Meal
Prep for Beginners because.
There probably isn't much searchvolume for Easy Meal hacks, but
(07:28):
meal prep for beginners is goingto be a keyword people are gonna
be searching for.
So you really wanna think aboutthat.
What are the words that youraudience is using and make sure
that you are using them.
So what I want you to reallyunderstand, you're gonna wanna
use your keywords naturally.
You're gonna use them in yourshow name, your big keyword,
whatever your core idea of yourpodcast is.
(07:50):
Then you're going to want to useyour Google keywords, which are
probably going to be more longtail.
Long tail means they're likefour or five, six words, all in
a phrase.
You're going to use those foryour podcast show notes, blog
post page.
If you want to potentially haveyour podcast referenced in chat,
GPT, and in AI search, which youshould, this is where everything
(08:14):
is going.
Then you're going to wanna makesure that you're formatting your
show notes page for AIinclusion.
So you wanna make sure you'redoing that.
You also wanna make sure you arebrainstorming your content
ideas, using keywords in yourtitles and your descriptions so
that you really make it easy foryour audience to find you.
(08:36):
Remember, a search engineoptimization is all about
visibility.
It's not about tip.
It's not about tricks and hacksand things like that.
It's about making it easier forthe search engines to understand
your content so that they'remore likely to show it to the
people you're creating it for.
It is that connection pointbetween who you are trying to
write for and the content thatyou're creating and your
(08:58):
business.
And so when you're creating.
A content that is going to helpyour ideal customer that drives
traffic to your podcast or yourwebsite.
You are then able to grow yourbusiness because you're being
very strategic and I want you tobe strategic in the content that
you create because that is whatis going to make the difference
(09:19):
for you, my friend.
This will allow you to be lessre.
Reliant upon social mediabecause if you can get more
people downloading your podcast, listening, joining in each week,
and more people finding yourwebsite or your blog because of
the Google SEO that you're doingon your show notes page, you
don't have to be on the contentcreation hamster wheel on the
(09:41):
social media side all the timebecause your business will still
grow.
So if you need.
