Welcome to episode 2 of Sip Happens! The world's only Cougar Town Rewatch Podcast.

The formation of the beloved cul-de-sac crew begins to take shape in "Into the Great Wide Open," the second episode of Cougar Town that set the foundation for the show's true identity. While Jules continues her adventures in dating younger men, specifically Josh, played by Nick Zeno of DC's Legends of Tomorrow fame, we witness the first gathering of friends in Jules' kitchen, sharing stories and wine in what would become a signature setting for the series.

This episode introduces viewers to several elements that would become series staples: Bobby's golf cart, Grayson's pub, and the iconic window conversations between Jules and Ellie. We also get our first taste of the deliciously antagonistic relationship between Ellie and Laurie as they compete for Jules' friendship while reluctantly forming their own bond.

The heart of Cougar Town reveals itself when Jules and Ellie have their first meaningful conflict about friendship and support. Behind the wine jokes (though the famous oversized glasses haven't fully appeared yet) and clubbing montages set to Beyoncé's "Single Ladies," we discover a show about genuine connections and the family we choose. This episode introduces several running gags, including mentions of never-seen characters like Nezzy and Bitchslap, and the short-lived but memorable appearance of "Bessie," Jules' impossibly large handbag. Whether you're revisiting Gulf Haven or discovering it for the first time, pour yourself a generous glass of wine and join us as we celebrate this perfect encapsulation of why Cougar Town remains such a beloved comfort show for so many fans.

Whether you’re rewatching for the 10th time or finally giving this bad-title-good-show a proper binge, Sip Happens is your weekly dose of nostalgia, comedy, and community, best enjoyed with a very large glass of wine.

Follow along on Instagram atSip Happens with Jaye, and let's
sip our way through Cougar Town, one cul-de-sac mess at a time.
Hello, hello.
Welcome to episode two of SipHappens, the Cougar Town rewatch
podcast, with me, Jaye Antonio.
Guys, I could not be moreexcited to be bringing you a
second episode already so soon,on the same day that we're doing

(00:42):
episode one.
I just finished watching episodetwo and let me just tell you
it's a classic Cougar Townepisode.
It is called Into the GreatWide Open.
It is season one, episode two,and it first aired on October
7th 2009.
Here's a fun fact Did you knowthat every episode, with the
exception of only two episodesof Cougar Town, the actual

(01:05):
titles of the show are Tom Pettysongs?
Tom Petty is a Florida nativeand the show is, of course,
based in the fictional town ofGulf Haven, florida, so that is
why they are named after that.
It's actually quite funnybecause Bill Lawrence, the
show's creator, confirmed onTwitter a little while back
actually, that the show's titlewould have been Sunshine State
if they had in fact changed thetitle of the show, because I

(01:27):
think it's so funny that CougarTown sticks up right up until
the end of the show and it hasliterally nothing to do with
cougars after, like I don't know, halfway through season one,
which we're going to get to,which is so exciting.
So, without further ado, let usjump right on in and talk about
this episode, because you knowwhat, like I think I wasn't
joking earlier when I said thisis such a classic episode of

(01:49):
Cougar Town, because it reallyis.
It's actually the first time wesee some of the cul-de-sac crew
formed together in the kitchen, which is really nice, because
it just, I don't know, I don'tknow it's like gives me this
like warm fuzzy feeling to seethem all in the kitchen like
that.
And in, in terms of guest starsand cameos, this has actually
got Nick Zeno as Josh, which isJewel's younger boyfriend.
He's famous for DC's Legends ofTomorrow and what I Like About

(02:11):
you, which is super cool.
You're definitely going torecognize him.
He is pretty hunky and him andJewel's have a 10 date, no sex
rule, which is quite a funnypart of the episode.
So what am I sipping today, guys, I want to start to do this
thing where I tell you what I'mdrinking, um, because obviously
this whole show revolves aroundwine, right?
So, like, why wouldn't I have aglass of wine?
Except I don't have a glass ofwine.

(02:33):
In fact, I literally just had acoffee and now I have water.
So what are you guys drinking?
Let me know on Instagram.
I'm super keen to find out, um,but if you listen to this while
you're driving or while you'reworking out, what are you
drinking?
Let me know.
Um, anyway, let's move on.
So a little bit of trivia.
As I did sort of mentionearlier, this is actually the
first episode to feature thecul-de-sac crew coming together,

(02:54):
which is really nice, and thatkitchen scene.
Very early on they're actuallyhaving like a little montage
talking about their bestmemories from them when they
were 20 or when they were intheir twenties, I should say,
and it's really really cool.
I think it's funny because inthis particular episode you
definitely start to see Ellieand Laurie's relationship start
to form and it's definitely thatof like I don't know foes who
have the same best friend, whichis really funny, and I think

(03:17):
that's kind of an ongoing thingand, funnily enough, it actually
does not really let up for theentire season but, unlike some
other shows, it definitely doesnot become too much.
It's one of those things whereyou have to just watch it and
you'll laugh.
And obviously they still loveeach other deep down, blah, blah
, blah.
But yeah, it's definitely thedefining moment of the episode

(03:37):
is their relationship.
So what is this episode about?
Well, I'll give you my littlestoryline that I've written down
and let me know if you wouldagree with what I've said here.
Jules is not so secretlyhooking up with a young stud
named Josh.
Jules wakes up before him, doesa full face of makeup and then
goes back to sleep to pretendshe woke up, like this.

(03:59):
This is the episode where theystart to form the cul-de-sac
crew.
It's also the first time we seehow in love Bobby and Andy are.
Chemistry starts to formbetween Grayson and Jules as
their paper buddy friendshipbegins to blossom.
Jules, ellie and Laurie headout to a club together.
It's actually just a bar, butwe are introduced here to the
hatred between Ellie and Laurie.

(04:19):
It's actually amazing.
We're also introduced to Gray'spub, which is the pub that
Grayson owns and, of course, ellie leaves early.
We're introduced to theinfamous Nezzy.
Nezzy is actually a recurringcharacter who we never see again
, but she is mentioned many, many times in future episodes,
speaking of characters we hearabout but never see.
We're also introduced toBobby's friend Bitchslap.

(04:42):
You'll hear that name in futureepisodes too.
So, without further ado, let ustalk about the review for this
episode.
Yes, this episode, episode two,it's such a great, a great
little episode and it's verymuch a self-contained episode.
There isn't actually too muchin this episode that does
continue on.
I'd say that the only thingthat does continue into episode

(05:03):
three, from memory, is the 10date no sex rule that jewel has,
that jewels has with josh, andthen obviously, everyone in the
gang is just kind of up to theirown, their own thing, which is
really, really fun.
It is also kind of introducedto us that laurie is a bit of a
party girl and loves to get outand have a few drinks here and
there and just have a really, really wild time, and something
that you should know aboutlaurie, of course, is that, uh,

(05:25):
it actually becomes a runninggag in the show, um, that she
has these insane wild adventures, and that's actually one of the
funniest parts of the show.
There is an entire episodelater on dated not dated purely
just to go through all of hercrazy stories that she's ever
told, and that episode is really, really funny.

(05:45):
I think it's one of thosethings where the gang's trying
to disprove her, like disproveher stories and like prove that
she has lied at least a coupleof times about them, and it just
, I don't know, it's chaotic andit's fun and it's really great.
As I mentioned, we're alsointroduced to the Bobby and Andy
sort of friendship and it'sreally funny because they're so
in love with each other.
They're both totally straightmen, but it's like I don't know

(06:08):
if you've seen thoserelationships that exist with
some straighties, straighties, straight men oh my God, I'm
going to get canceled with thatone but some straight men where
they're just really huggy, touchy, feely, lovey, kissy kind
of relationships, and I thinkthat that's really cute.
So this is definitely one ofthose cases.
Um, we're also introduced tothe infamous golf cart that
Bobby drives, which I really, really love, and just overall,

(06:31):
this is really great.
They haven't started leaninginto the wine aspect of the show
heavily, yet it's definitelysomething that builds slowly,
but I probably will mention thisagain in the future since I'll
most probably forget that Imentioned it now.
But one of the funny thingswith the wine obsession of the
show is that the creators of theshow would go over to Courtney
Cox's house and see that shedrinks wine out of these

(06:52):
insanely large glasses.
So they wrote it into the showbut like comedically so.
So it's like they give her avase to drink as a glass of wine
, basically as a glass to putthe wine, and holds a whole
bottle of wine, and it's really, really funny.
Anyway, let's talk about themost Cougar Townie moment.
So, like a lot of other shows, there's definitely a deep heart

(07:14):
to this show, and the heart ofthe show is obviously the
relationship between Ellie andJules that we see, and in this
particular episode, jules getsreally upset with Ellie because
she just won't blindly supporther, and obviously there's some
flaws in this argument in and ofitself, but I think the most
part here is that you candefinitely see how good of a
friend they are to each otherand how deep their love for each

(07:36):
other goes, because there's apart of this episode where Ellie
basically refuses to talk toJules because she just doesn't
respect Jules' decision to goout and like, try to relive her
20s and get drunk and all ofthat kind of stuff.
So they kind of have a bigfight kind of stuff.
So they kind of have a bigfight.
It's like a moment in theepisode where they're oh, by the

(07:59):
way, I should mention as wellthat they live right next door
to each other so that likeJules's kitchen looks into
Ellie's living room, and there'sa lot of scenes that take place
back and forth at this windowwhere they're like yelling at
each other.
So in this particular instanceJules is yelling and actually
crying about how she would havehoped that of all her friends,
ellie would have given her thesupport and all of that kind of
stuff.
And I definitely feel that andI see it.

(08:19):
But it's just one of thosereally quick, emotional, like
sitcom driven scenes where theyhave to get back to the comedy
pretty quickly.
But you know, for the most partit is really really deep.
So I think that that for me, isthe most Cougatown-y moment
part.
It is really really deep.
So I think that that for me, isthe most Cougar Town-y moment,
and, yeah, I think that's prettymuch that.

(08:39):
So let's move on to the timecapsule test, rewatch, awards
and then the wrap up.
So, as I mentioned, I want tokeep these episodes relatively
short and sharp.
So I'm kind of aiming foreverything to be under 15
minutes and obviously if I havea guest star it'll go over that
time.
But I do want them to be niceand short and sharp, no longer
than the actual episodesthemselves, ideally.
So what is a time capsule testand what are we doing here with

(09:04):
it?
So I've got three things that Imay talk about in time capsule
test.
It really just depends on whatis featured in episode, but the
three things are is there anyoutdated references, tech or
fashion featured in this episode?
Is there any jokes that agedbadly or particularly well and
would a certain joke air today?
So let's start off withoutdated references, tech or
fashion.
So there's actually a part inthis episode where, for the most

(09:25):
part, the episode is prettygood at containing itself
without having to reference anydates or times, but the most
outdated part of it is whereLaurie pulls out what I think is
like an old blackberry lookingdevice, a very, very old one,
it's silver and then, of course,we're followed by a montage of
clubbing accompanied by the songsingle ladies by Beyonce.
So I thought that this was oneof those interesting things

(09:47):
where it definitely exists inits own little capsule in time,
but I definitely think it agesthe show slightly when you watch
this part.
And, of course, it's a montageof all these photos from the
night out that they had together, ending with Jules on the beach
drunk with police officers ontheir shoulders holding a gun,
and it's just a lot of stuffhappening really quickly.

(10:09):
But it's a very funny montageand I think it's just one of
those things where we don't seeenough of this kind of stuff
anymore.
So I do agree, I do think it'soutdated, but I think it's
really really fun.
There are no jokes in particularthat aged badly in my opinion.
Nothing really stood out to methere, so I don't have a
particular area here that Iwould talk about, but would a

(10:32):
joke air today?
There is that breakdown that Ispoke about earlier was kind of
interesting because for me itwas like, well, maybe they would
do that today, maybe becausethe thing is like it is very
selfish, in my opinion, of Julesto have spoken to Ellie the way
that she did, despite itactually showcasing their
friendship pretty spot on, whichis kind of funny.

(10:53):
But I'm not sure that theywould frame it the same way
today because obviously thingshave changed a lot, even just
since 2009.
And it's weird to say that, butyou know, things may have gone,
in my opinion, maybe just alittle bit too far one way.
Maybe we're just a little bitPC and I don't see a problem
with showcasing that ontelevision if it's, you know, if
it's kind of done in the rightway in the right environment.

(11:15):
And obviously there are thingsthat are completely off limits
and that we wouldn't talk aboutor joke about.
But in this instance I thinkthat this part would be
completely fine to air today andI think it's just one of those
things where you have to watchit to understand the emotion
behind it.
I do think maybe it happenedtoo early in the season because
it really hasn't beenestablished how good of a friend

(11:36):
like they are.
We haven't seen anythingoutside of just, you know, some
baby jokes about Ellie's babyand all of that kind of stuff.
So in my opinion, maybe itcould have happened later in the
season the actual fight andargument, but you know it is
what it is.
It happened here.
Alrighty, let's move to therewatch awards.
So what are the rewatch awards?

(11:57):
So these particular awards arejust two things that I love in
the episode.
So number one is a big Carlmoment of the week and, for
reference, we haven't actuallymet big Carl yet.
There's going to be a couple ofdifferent glasses that we meet,
but big Carl is the name of oneof Jules's wine glasses, or
should I say wine vases and soI've decided to name it the Big
Carl Moment of the Week.

(12:17):
And then the other award is thecul-de-sac MVP.
So what is the big Carl momentof the week?
It goes to Aunt Carol, ellie'saunt, who broke her hip at
Ellie's wedding.
So they're talking about Juleshaving not such a great day.
She's a bit injured from theclubbing the night before.
And Ellie says hey, like, letme go and grab my wedding video

(12:39):
where we can watch my Aunt Carolfall and break her hip over and
over and over again.
And then Jules says I love itwhen she screams and cries, and
I just think it's the funniestthing.
So the MVP of the weekdefinitely goes to Aunt Carol.
We never meet her.
But it is one of those thingswhere I just think it's such a
funny backstory and I think itwould definitely have existed in
the show Bible for Ellie'scharacter that she did have an

(13:01):
Aunt Carol.
But I kind of wish we got tosee like I don't know, like a
what do they call it when youlike freeze frame over to
another clip or a flashback orsomething.
I don't know what that thing iscalled, but it would have been
cool if we could see that happen.
But I get why they didn't.
This isn't the type of showthat has the flashbacks, at
least not at this point.
And then, moving on to the finalaward for the week, the
cul-de-sac MVP, I literally justwrote Bessie, oh, my God.

(13:24):
Okay, I'm going to tell youguys something that I've never
really told anyone, except forCharlie, my, my husband, um, but
uh, bessie is the name of Jules, huge, like handbag, it fits
everything in it and it's arunning joke in this particular
episode.
And then we literally never seeBessie again, which pains me so
much because of how big of a Idon't know of, like a I don't

(13:48):
even know what you would call itlike a big thing.
That exists in my own personallife where I have, for like the
last maybe 10 years or so God,you guys are going to judge me
so hard.
This is so weird, but I have apillow.
I'm making myself like cacklein this room.
I have a pillow and it's one ofthose pillows that you wouldn't

(14:08):
actually sleep on because it'sso firm that or maybe you would
if you like a firm pillow, butit's a really big, firm pillow
and I've had this pillow back inAustralia for such a long time
and forever.
I've named this pillow Bessiebecause it's such a big pillow.
And then when I moved over toLA, it was very much a case of

(14:30):
oh my God, charlie, my husbandhad this really big pillow
because I didn't bring Bessiewith me and I just named it
Bessie and now it's my hugpillow.
So when you're sleeping on yourside and you put a pillow there
just to like prop your chestopen, sort of thing, that's
Bessie and that is why Bessie ismy cul-de-sac MVP.
I really wish this had becomelike a running gag, and I guess
maybe it didn't land or I haveno idea.
But if you know the answer, letme know.

(14:51):
Why wasn't Bessie evermentioned again?
Oh my god, I don't even know.
I wish I did, I wish I did.
But I love Bessie so much.
You have to see it.
It's the most ridiculous bag.
And there is a scene as wellwhere Jules is like hung over at
the pool, like at her house, and Grayson like throws Bessie
over the fence and it just hitsthe ground with such force that,
oh my God, it's just fantastic.

(15:11):
But those are my two awards forthe week.
There you have your Big Kylemoment and your cul-de-sac MVP.
Thank you so much for thisepisode, guys.
I love talking about Cougatown.
I realize this is quite a short, quick episode, but I think, as
I said, this is kind of what Iwant to do.
If you prefer me to go evenmore in depth, I absolutely can,

(15:33):
but for the time being I dothink this is a really great
length.
My little wrap up for the weekis this is a fantastic episode.
If you have not had a chance towatch it, go back and watch
episode one and two.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
