In season 2 episode 33 of Skate Date we talk about being shopaholics, where that tendency came from and what it is about shopping that makes us feel so good. In the Wheel World we discuss how our bodies are reacting to going back to derby (hint, we are not doing great) and then we have a question in Dear Shovel about partners who don't roller skate.
Overall you should know there was a windstorm the night we recorded so we decided to take it casual and record on the couch, which lends for a cozy, comfy and intimate Skate Date episode.

Shove (00:08):
everyone welcome to skate D

Rebel (00:10):
What's up everybody?
Welcome to skate D skate day inour living room instead of in
the garage. Why are we doing inthe living room because it's
really windy is really reallywindy. So our garage is really
loud when it's windy because thewind just bangs against the door
and also, we have a bunch ofthings like in rafters and so

(00:31):
we're also genuinely concernedthat we're gonna die every time
it's windy and we're out thereso we decided that we would
still bring you an episodeescape date, but it would be
slightly different because thebackground is different and the
audio is obviously a littledifferent for you people
listening on the streamingservices,

Shove (00:52):
she decided I did

Rebel (00:55):
decide because I put our safety above putting out

Shove (01:00):
this still have an episode he decided I wanted to
be like, Oh no, it's windy andscary. Let's just cuddle and do
nothing. And she's like so whatdo you want to talk about on
skate day and I was on cuddledup with Beau he chillin like a
villain. And now I'm here.

Rebel (01:16):
You're literally two feet from where you were

Shove (01:19):
before. We're comfortable over there. And I wasn't talking
I was on tik tok just likemindlessly going to her even
though she's right there.

Rebel (01:29):
Yeah, good times. And boy, it wasn't much like what
he's doing right now.

Shove (01:35):
So that's why I pulled him up here because he must been
in two girls one pup anyways, good day is a podcast brought to
you by two roller skaters thatare sort of in love. And yeah,
we talk about what's in the realworld in the real world. I'm
sure I'm rebel together. Whereshovel? Can you dig it by hand?

Rebel (01:56):
I can too. Can you? Yes, yes.

Shove (02:01):
The average he always mean we are snuggled on the
couch with Bobo in the middle.

Rebel (02:07):
We've got an audience going. We've got some candles
over there. My altar is lit up.
And we just had dinner so we'renice and tummy fall come

Shove (02:19):
clean.

Rebel (02:23):
We'll get to that. And then we'll world so today we're
going to talk about I forgotthat we chose to DACA we're
talking about shopping,

Shove (02:35):
shopping, shopping addiction

Rebel (02:37):
and being a shopaholic.
That is what we're talking abouttoday. And then we're going to
talk about restarting Derby andall the pains that our bodies
are going through right now.
Growing beans, yes. So um, whatdid you do this last week baby?

Shove (02:57):
I don't remember I filmed for you.

Rebel (03:00):
Oh, yeah. Yeah, we started a couple of really dope
videos. We're starting a newseries on my YouTube channel if
you're lucky, that's gonna bereally exciting that I'm not
going to tell you about yetbecause it's a secret. And I
think my big accomplishment forthis last week was that I got I

(03:23):
made a string of ghosties so Imade a go see garland?

Shove (03:28):
Watching scary movies every night except for tonight
we will

Rebel (03:36):
find because it's super unrealistic to literally watch a
movie every say did last year.
Well, we also already missed aday because one of the nights we
watch Walking Dead. That counts.
I don't know that that counts.
Okay, He's scary. Zombie. Zombienews.

Shove (03:56):
All right, so So before we jump in it's a fake good.
Nope. It's a real fake business.

Rebel (04:06):
No, it's a real ad. It's a fake ad for a real business.
No, it's a real ad for realbusiness. I think your campaign
has been okay whatever so it'sfor what shot baby

Shove (04:20):
tears for queries

Rebel (04:21):
No.

Shove (04:24):
Mirrors for queries. No.
dears Berkeley's No. Cheers forquit kinda cheers to.

Rebel (04:35):
That's it. Cheers to the queers.com It's my website and
little shop and I just wanted totell you all that I just
restocked like, actually Okay, Irestocked those super cute heart
sunglasses that you love him,but I just got a bunch of new

(04:58):
stuff in it. have been orderingand making and dreaming Mel
heart out and finally everythingis almost ready. We have one
more thing that's going to droplike coming up soon but besides
that there are new earringsthere's cherry earrings. There's
magic eight ball bracelets.
There's moon earrings. Those areyour favorite right? There's

(05:23):
laces and their socks there'spride socks rainbow socks. And
it really is a full one stopshop and very very soon there
will be reverse tiny sweatshirt.

(05:47):
But yeah, so if you are a personwho enjoys treating themselves
and is a shopaholic like us,then we're free to be a
shopaholic or uncover from myshop cheers liquid COMM And if
you're like, Oh my gosh, theholidays are coming up. I need
to get a bunch of stuff. Andlike there's skaters in my life

(06:09):
or even their non skaters and Ijust like cute stuff, people in
my life, then here's the firstshop is where you should shop.
Because that would be reallygreat. Thumbs up. Oh my gosh,
there used to be this thing, this game that we will play at
camp. And it was like No, no,no, it wasn't thumbs up seven

(06:32):
up, although that is also a fungame. But it was like a song and
be like, done and then and thenand then and then and then it'd
be like, thumbs up and thenthey'd sing it again. And then
you had your thumbs up and thenit'd be like, thumbs up, elbows
that and then it was like, thumbs up, elbows out, shoulders
back head tilt. And he'd likesing it. And he like kept doing

(06:55):
all these things. Anyways, that's what that room Yeah. But
just choose the course shot. SoI don't feel sad. Yeah,

Shove (07:07):
yeah.

Rebel (07:07):
Okay. Shall we jump into the real world?
Boy, he is so loud right now.
Okay, He's here. He's just I'mhappy to be here. He has his

(07:33):
nice little rainbow color todayon because it's National Coming
Out Day. And he wants you toknow that he's, he's gay.

Shove (07:56):
Okay, let's get back on

Rebel (07:57):
track. Okay, so in the real world, we're talking about
shopping and being shopaholicsand having a shopping addiction.
Yes. So raise your hand if youare shopaholic.

Shove (08:15):
Only rebels raising her hand right now. No, you
definitely should be raisingthough a racist Hill. Well, he
would vote does not

Rebel (08:23):
have a Telly as a note for a deal. Here. Is that are
you going to raise your hand?
No, we're gonna raise your handfor you because you're
definitely also shopaholic. Ohreally? Not Okay, well she is so
don't listen to her. So how doyou know I first off what would
you call like how do you qualifysomeone as a shopaholic?

Shove (08:49):
Someone that's buy stuff to the point where like, they
can't afford it. They mightstart using their credit cards
what station it'd be doing.
Someone that always has anexcuse for like why they need it
but it's things that areunnecessary to the point where
it's not treating yourselfanymore it's just like to access

Rebel (09:12):
I feel like a shopaholic is someone yeah who maybe like
goes after that feeling likethey definitely feel a high when
they purchase things.

Shove (09:24):
Even good studies, but everyone gets that high. But
like

Rebel (09:27):
you're like addicted to the high Yeah, it's like you
really really like it. Yeah, yeah. So you still don't think
you qualify as a shopaholic?

Shove (09:37):
Obviously kidding.
Everyone knows I'm a shopaholic.
They see how many outfits Ihave. I could go probably two
three months, three months orfour months without repeating
them outfit

Rebel (09:49):
without repeating an article within the outfit or

Shove (09:53):
I probably could have like an article but like repeat
But yeah, I could go

Rebel (09:59):
Yeah. I think I could go a month and a half without
changing outfits withoutrepeating an outfit. Okay, so
what do you think about the factthat we're shopping? Like is it
bad? Is it good is it

Shove (10:18):
that's like, think about how much more money we would
have if we didn't like buy allthese things that we don't need.
And think about like how it'sbad for the environment because
even though we're not likebuying stuff and throwing it
away, it's just like consumingand consuming and consuming
capitalism. Yeah, and then like,I don't know like obviously both

(10:43):
of us are shopaholics as we knownow we have reasons for it that
we understand

Rebel (10:48):
aka go back to poverty complex episode makes with also
mental health mixed with mentalhealth. That was the big eye
opener for me is I didn'trealize that mental health was
connected to shopping like, forme, when we talked about poverty
complex before we ever did theepisode. I felt like it opened
my eyes a lot to like, Oh, thisis the reason why I really like

(11:12):
things and even like, talking toone of my friends, she's always
like, Yeah, dude, like, uh, wegrew up poor, like, that's why
we like things so much. Like, wenever got to have things and so
now I can afford things. It'slike really, really exciting. So
like, I get that but um, yeah,so it's definitely not good. And

(11:36):
let's talk a little bit aboutthe like, relationship between
mental health and shoppingbecause that one for me was a
new realization.

Shove (11:48):
Why?

Rebel (11:49):
Well, I just didn't realize like I kind of thought
that it wasn't related at all.
And then the other day so thereason why we're doing this
episode right now is because weboth just kind of went on a
shopaholic binge and like wewere like oh like we need to

(12:10):
stop like that

Shove (12:14):
was it some miles on those cars? Yeah,

Rebel (12:17):
we we went shopping a lot and we like did not need to go
shopping so and

Shove (12:21):
only one of those places was like it wasn't necessity but
did we go overboard and sayyeah, I need a new bra but then
like let's just replace all ouribraaz

Rebel (12:31):
Okay, I actually didn't have any browser fit me so I
feel like for me that one wasjustify my didn't fit either.
But like I had zero that fit Didyou have any of the fit? See
then I don't I think that onewas justified. For me. It was
like so I'm actually returning acouple of things. One of them
happened when I was returningsomething I returned something

(12:54):
and then I ended up buying morestuff at the place I returned
the thing at and I was like I'mso stupid I shouldn't have done
that. But that's why I likereturning things by mail so like
I have two things that I have toreturn one I'm so sad because
it's a pair of shoes that I wasgoing to make in a roller skates
oh

Shove (13:11):
they don't fit

Rebel (13:12):
they don't fit so I was really excited about them but
it's good because we spent abunch of money is somewhere else
so like I'm glad that I'mreturning it and then whenever I
buy a bunch of stuff I always goto the closet and go okay what
can you get rid of and sell totry and like make up for the
money that I spent but yeah, yeah, so yeah, so for me I

(13:36):
didn't realize that like mentalillness was Connect Can you
explain to the audience like howmental illness is connected to
shine? No,

Shove (13:45):
like I haven't researched it and that's why why I don't
know that it is such a sideeffect of ADHD Okay, Rebel and
bypoll aka me so like for meit's like something always know
like anytime you watch like amovie or show and they're like
oh, and it's like someone that'sbipolar. It's like shows them in

(14:08):
a manic episode and they arebuying and buying and buying and
my just getting that rush off ofthat. And like Yeah,

Rebel (14:17):
do you believe Yeah, I mean, do you know like, what the
ADHD thing is connected to

Shove (14:25):
now that's probably the dopamine That is why just like a
higher addiction to the dopamineor something. Yeah, so if I had
to guess like, because shopeeand like they did a study and it
showed like that people's eyeseven dilate. I think we've
talked about this on here beforeTo be honest, but like your eyes
do dilate, your pupils dilate.
And you have this look of likethe hunt of looking for

(14:47):
everything. And then thatfeeling will last like up to
like 10 minutes or somethingafter you buy it and then you're
like, crash. That was fine. Andeither you're just fine. You're
like Kelly to feel that again.
And that's where they I alwayssay like shopping therapy is a
huge thing. Like people alwayslike, oh, retail therapy.
Because when you're sad you shotbecause you get that little high

(15:08):
dopamine from buying things.

Rebel (15:12):
I feel like for me, it's like that i hyper fixate on like
something whether it's like mehyper fixating on like my
wardrobe and needing it to beperfect. Or like, hyper fixating
on like a room or on like thehouse in general, like and so
then I'll just start buyingthings for whatever it is that

(15:33):
I'm trying. And then I'll justgo like, way too hardcore in the
pain. And then I'll be like, yikes.

Shove (15:40):
And I'll become obsessed with something and think this is
it. This is my thing, happy ofhappiness. Like, I'm gonna start
scrapbooking like I was likeaddicted to the six off here
that like literally justjournals, but art journals and I
start following all these artjournaling things, and like was
obsessed with it. So I was like,I'm gonna do that. So I bought

(16:00):
like, a couple $100 in a shortamount, like I was like,
obsessed. And that was like, I'dhave everything and I was just
like ordering ordering ordering.
And like now undergraduates, right, like so much random like
craft, like stationery andstuff. And I'm just like, Oh, I
haven't touched that in likefour months. But like, that's
what happens. And it's justlike, I get like a rise of

(16:22):
clothings leaves you like thefirst thing, but if like,
there's something at the timethat I'm like, this is what I
want. And yeah, that's bad.
Because then afterwards, I'mlike, Oh, it's never or not
lately, like back when I waslike struggling like really like

(16:43):
making minimum wage. I rememberbeing like, this is really bad,
cuz like my daddy's even saylike, it's like money's burning
a hole in your pocket. Like, assoon as you get it, you just
like run out, spend it. Anddefinitely that was true. And
now it's like, I have to stashmoney away and be like, don't

(17:04):
touch it at all You're allowedto have. But then it does get
really bad. And it's likeHalloween. So I'm like, let's
just buy a Halloween costumestuff, even though I'm like, you
shouldn't like I think that'swhat I'm obsessed with right
now. Like, oh, in costume stuff.
Yeah, like I was like searchingand I stopped myself so many
times, I almost spent way toomuch money on this dress. And I
was like it prior, I talked alot about it. So I was like, it

(17:26):
probably won't fit. So don't doit. And it's like really hard
online. Because unless it's likea shop, I know what sizes I
wear. Because it's so easy tospend too much, especially when
you find brands that are likeI've been trying to not just buy
fast fashion. So like it's worsebecause I went from being able
to like buy one item thatsupposed to be better for the

(17:48):
environment and last longer. Butthen I'm like, Oh, I couldn't
have been like three things.
fast fashion store. And I'm justtrying to do my part. But now
it's just like, maybe worse, because I want to buy more
things when it is moreexpensive. Like

Rebel (18:03):
going more into the hole.
Yeah, yeah, it's definitely notgood.

Shove (18:08):
And these are like, obviously, like we were saying,
like, it's fine for us to betogether that we wish together.
And like we feed each other oddbecause a lot of times, like if
I'm like going down, I'm like, Iwant to go to the store all day,
but don't buy anything just likeI'm not and I'm like you always
do that every time I look overand she has her hands full of

(18:29):
clothes, or random knickknacks.

Rebel (18:32):
I know, I know, but I always love them. I will say
that I don't have as much of thelike, whatever that dopamine let
down. I don't have as much ofthat. Like, I don't feel like Oh
crap, I need to like shop again.
Because I feel like I don't feelthat high anymore. It's like for
me the high last like, as I'mcontinuing to use it. So like I

(18:53):
feel like I don't know, like Idon't have as much as it's not
as like, I don't know, I dothink that there's like I'm get
super, super proud of myselfbecause I'll take a long time
and I won't spend any money atall and I'll be like, Oh my god,
I just saved so much money. Andthen something like snaps in my
head and I'm like, I have tospend money. Like I spent so

(19:18):
long like I'll do like a monthwithout spending any money and
then all of a sudden I'll belike, I can't do it. I can't do
it. Like I have to spend moneyagain. And then I feel so
stressed out because I spent toomuch money in like a short
amount of time. And it'soverwhelming. Anyway. So it's an
addiction and we're trying todeal with it. And I feel like

(19:38):
we're majorly exposing ourselvesright now, but I'm sure there
are other people who strugglewith this,

Shove (19:49):
though. Um, I think that's one of the jokes is like,
Well, when I make more money,it'll be better because like I
don't know like maybe I won't beso broken I'll have my shopping
addiction but I'll be able tostay afloat and then no you'd
make more money and then youspend it's like oh my god like

(20:13):
you might not be poor anymorebut you're still late rich like
get it together and it's justlike, I don't know I don't know
why I get so happy in the joy oflike, things that brings me and
it's like, I know that itshouldn't maybe we need to join
like a shoppers anonymous orsomething.

Rebel (20:32):
Fuck no. I've been in anonymous groups and I will
never be a part of them. Again,

Shove (20:39):
I've volunteered at a scenario one time that's really
interesting. I do communityservice necessary for another
time

Rebel (20:48):
very excited for that story.

Shove (20:50):
But yeah, so if you have a shopping addiction let's go on
a shopping trip to get therelet's go to the Mall of America

Rebel (20:59):
let's not I actually like I don't know like I do feel like
I enjoy shopping with you. But Idon't really like shopping with
a lot of people like it actuallylike it's not as fun for me.

Shove (21:14):
I think now I have fun shopping with you but I used to
hate it because rebels are kindof personnel take like 50 items
of the fitting room and I don'ttry things out I'm just like
dude don't let's go and like Ispeed through and she like me
when the dressing rooms are openI feel like you would just like

(21:35):
go so slow and take your timeand they're faster now but then
you'd like take it off to thefitting room and then you'd be
like babe look at this becauseit's an exercise for me I'm like
let's go in and help him and outof here on to them

Rebel (21:52):
which I feel like makes it more of an addiction for you

Shove (21:56):
because I know what I like I go in and I'm like this
is my style like right now I'minto like 70s Rock and Roll so
let's go and I like know exactlywhen I'm looking for like a like
70s rock'n'roll 90s grunge Ihave this idea so it doesn't fit
that genre then I keep onwalking so I'm used to just like
to dip into through everythingand then snatch the things and

(22:19):
then I look at it and it's notlike I just buy everything I
still have the moment of like nonot this I know that but when I
am at kind of like a high whichlike lately I've been feeling
like a little bit of it like Ithink I'm on a high right now. I
will just buy everything andthat's it like I'm doing pretty

(22:39):
neutral mentally because I'llreason with like you don't need
this and then there's othertimes where like this last
weekend where I'm just likeobserving all these brides like
I know it's a problem and Iwon't look at price tags and
that's when I'm like like sogood like what I had to pay for
the fries I had a moment of likethat was not your

Rebel (23:06):
But you told me like oh this is my budget Yeah, I

Shove (23:09):
was like $50 over but then what did I do? I said okay,
let's go for 21 but guess what?
I bought three things one wasfree the pants were supposed to
be $12 to charge me $1 I'll this$6 for three things and it was
amazing but then the pants andit fit so

Rebel (23:27):
but you still only spent $6 Yeah, yeah And meanwhile I
was like okay don't let me spendanything and then I ended up
getting three things but they'rethe cutest three things and I
still love them and I'm stillnot over the high and that was
like two days ago See I told youone day ago whatever

Shove (23:45):
I think I get over the high ones I

Rebel (23:47):
wear it

Shove (23:49):
like all wear it and then like I'm like oh that was cute.
And then I'm like okay, yeah, Istill will wear it but I don't
get that like excitement. Nowit's a staple piece in my
closet. You know,

Rebel (24:00):
you know and I really like I like wearing new shoes a
lot. I really like like newsneakers these days I'm like oh
my god I'm wearing these newsneakers like they like so fresh
like I'm like obsessed with thatthey like okay, anyways,

Shove (24:20):
I don't want to talk about this cringe shopping
anymore. Okay, like you saidexposed and uncomfortable. And I
feel like it's access but I feellike a lot of people I know.
Have like both my Derby wivesdefinitely are addicted to

(24:40):
shopping. Other Yeah,

Rebel (24:43):
I also think it's a trauma response. Yeah,
definitely. Like I feel likewhen you have so much trauma
sometimes you find comfort inthings. And in spaces that are
like really curated and likespecific and You know, a lot of
times when you have a lot oftrauma, your home isn't like

(25:03):
that. And so being able to goand spend time in a place, and
like get things that match acertain like, vibe can make you
feel better. Not that's notadvice. That's just me analyzing
why we're like the way we are.
Anyways, let's move on to thetherapists know, I've just been
in therapy since February now.

(25:24):
So I'm pretty much an expert.
Nice, nice. Self High Fiverebel.

Shove (25:32):
Alright, let's move on over to the world,

Rebel (25:35):
the wheel world.
And the wheel world. We'retalking about the reality of

(25:55):
coming back to Derby. You couldtake the lead on this one, baby.

Shove (26:01):
I had Derby today, right afterward. That was the thing.

Rebel (26:07):
You look so good for coming home from Derby. After
working? No, like really?

Shove (26:17):
So um, I don't know, it's a trip. Like I thought it was
like, come back to Derby. It'slike, yeah, there's been a
pandemic, but also like, I thinka year, a year and a half before
that I quit. And definitely wasin the best shape of my life
because I was in Derby, and thenjust stopped being so. So

(26:42):
anyways, I thought, Oh, I cancome back to Germany now and
just like, be eased into it. Andit'll be fine, because I have
fresh meat. But since there'snot that many people there, and
most of the people showing offup are like, travel team level.
It's like they're just like,yeah, let's just throw everyone
together. I have noticed thatthe other fresh meats aren't

(27:03):
showing up except for one. Sowhich means that he would assume
like, Well, shall we know you, unlike other people honestly
actually skated the whole time.
So you're good, like, and sothen they have as me to be like
crazy drills and stuff and like,I don't care. Like, how much you
ski? Or what kind of skating youdo. You come over to Derby and

(27:26):
everything hurts. Yes,everything hurt. It's like a
different you're using likeyou're getting low. It's it's
definitely a lot of controllingthings, you have to stop a
certain way you have totransition a certain way. Like
you have to work on your goodand bad ways. Some new parts of
your body are hurting becausemaybe you never turn to the

(27:47):
right because you turn to theleft naturally. So you're not
going to be like Oh, let me gothe other way. Unless you're
really dedicated like thisphasing person over here and
want to be a switch button. I

Rebel (27:58):
love to try both ways.

Shove (28:00):
Yeah, I'm bisexual. Yes.

Rebel (28:04):
I don't know. I just think that there's something
really great about like, constantly challenging yourself
and trying things on both sides.

Shove (28:11):
Yeah. Um, yeah, so the body pain is real. Today was
really hard because it was likeCrossFit. And skates like bear
crawls and sit ups and squatsand then suicides which is when
you like, skate one person'sdoing like workouts until you

(28:35):
like skate really fast to theother side of the rink and then
stop as fast as possible alsothe rink was oh my god I don't
know if they're cleaning thefloor so slippery but it was I
know I've seen them blow likeuse a blower to get stuff off
but it was extra slick today andwhat's crazy is I was just there

(28:57):
yesterday and it was fine. Buttoday like my toe stops I turn
on to stop and I would slideback do you think it's a wind
the wind by blowing dust andstuff because it's not real
walls so it's probably like it'sI don't know but it was so hard
and like even just trying toskate fast slipping out people

(29:17):
are falling left and right. So Ifelt like uncomfortable but
anyways yeah so so let me goback so suicides are like when
you skate really fast and andstop the way you can stop the
fastest so for me it's Torontostops I would like stop and then
escape back and do it again. Andthen you skate back and then you
skate back again and then youlet your partner stop then they

(29:39):
do it and then you have to dothe workout until they finish so
you're like please be fast andlike he was pretty good she got
slim in but like for me I wasgoing fast and I was so happy.
It was my barians that wereslowing me down. Oh man I was
doing the Sprint's yesterday Iwas like I know a skate faster
than this and I was freakingstruggling I can Ellie was able

(29:59):
to pass Someone barely for alittle bit that I knew I could
out skate. But it was like Icouldn't even coast I had a key.
I was getting so tired. And itwas because my bearings like
Well, today I was faster. Butlike my body was so tired
because of all the squats fromyesterday. And it's literally
like when you start going to thegym again, that's what Derby is

(30:22):
immense, like, Yeah, I know, I'mmore confident, like both few
coaches have told me Wow, youlook so much more confident on
your skates. And I do feel thatway. But I'm definitely so out
of shape, my endurance is shot, and like my back hurts, My feet
hurt if you don't hurt too bad,but like my thighs are so sore.
Like I'm not used to having toskate and get so low.

Rebel (30:44):
I have been skating like y'all know, like, I've been
skating, I've been skating morethan I've ever skated. And I
came back to Derby, I've onlybeen back to like two practices.
And my back hurts so bad. Like,it hurts so bad. I feel like I
can't even do the most basicthings anymore. Like the most

(31:08):
basic things I can't do like asin like, I dropped my pen right
here, right before this started.
And I was trying to lean over topick up my pen. And I was like,
I can't do it. Like I can'treach it because I have extreme
pain in my lower back.

Shove (31:23):
Yeah, and I already have naturally really bad but so what
I've been doing this seasonthat's different than last time
is when I feel like too muchpain, I just stop and I go to
the side and I wait it out. So Isee that they're like working on
something new that I feel like Ican handle more, or I just like
wait for a couple minutes, andthen I'll go back out and pick

(31:45):
up. But I'm not feeling like thefirst time I felt pressure. And
what's so stupid about that as Iprobably made my back worse.
Because I would like be like,No, I have to do that I have to
do what they say and I'm inpain. So I would get like Icy
Hot patches and like, I havethem on underneath my leggings.
I had them on my bag likecovered and I'm causing so much

(32:06):
pain. I remember talking to soyone of our coaches. And I was
like yeah, like I don't know ifI can do dairy like my back just
hurts so bad. And like, I don'tknow what's wrong. Like it's
never been like this now beforeand she was like you should go
to a chiropractor. And that didnothing. But the more I skated,
the less I hurt. So now it's allabout like, body conditioning,

(32:28):
and we're just trying to getback into like, that kind of
schema. Yeah,

Rebel (32:32):
cuz it is totally different. Yeah,

Shove (32:36):
I wish UK struggle, but you would have hated it tonight.

Rebel (32:39):
I would have hated it. I I feel like as soon as skating
feels like an exercise. So like,as soon as we're just like, all
we're doing is exercising onskates. I'm like, yeah, I'm not
interested anymore.

Shove (32:54):
I really was like, I'm bored. Just like this isn't like
Derby I got bored.

Rebel (32:59):
Yeah. And I think that that's like an issue with people
like me. And Healy, who is like,I don't actually like working
out. I know there are a lot ofpeople that do like they like
going to the gym like they likelike working out. I don't. And
that's why skating works for me,because it doesn't feel like
going to the gym. But as soon asit feels like going to gym, but
just like with skates on, whichjust all that means is like,

(33:22):
with the weights on your feet.
It's like No thanks.

Shove (33:27):
Yeah, so I don't know, it's like, I also had an
epiphany. yesterday. I'm thecoach, aka our friend, awkward
skater was late. And then I waslike, can I run? Lead rebel
asked her. And she was like, yeah, and then Rebel had a
whistle. So that I was like aCapricorn stream, I have the

(33:50):
power. I get to tell people whatto do.

Rebel (33:54):
So it would make a really great coach was born for

Shove (33:57):
this. So I ran warmups, and it's like, I'm
knowledgeable. And even thoughlike I've been gone from Derby a
long time, even before thepandemic, I was hoping now for a
few practices that read room fortheir freshies. And I really
like to teach people things. Andas they say, what is it like
those that can do and those thatcan't teach? Sorry, some people

(34:20):
do a lot with skinny mints alot. Like I've gotten people to
drop in and stall and do thesetricks. And just because I'm
observing and I can see whatthey need to fix and it's like a
little equation goes off. Andfor me, it's just like, my fear
gets in the way or I just don'twant to, I don't understand it.
And that's fine. But I'm reallygood at like breaking it down or

(34:41):
seeing like the little thingsthat people can tweak to like
when things so like, I was like,Man, this is so much fun. Like
this is what I would want to do.
And like what we just don't haveany like freshies right now, but
I think in the future likethat's what I would want to do
like about would be fun, but I'mlike Right now about it. I think

Rebel (35:02):
that like, people say, I think that the reason why I hate
that phrase so much is becauseit totally discredit all
teachers ever. And it also like, takes away the idea that like
teaching is an actual skill.
It's not like, Oh, I don't havethese skills. So I guess I'll
fall back on the thing thatdoesn't require any skills. It's

(35:23):
like no, like, there are a lotof really poor teachers. There
are a lot of really poorteachers. But there are a lot of
really bad teachers out therewho are teaching well, because
they don't have the skill andthe talent to be a teacher. And
you definitely have the skilland the talent to be a teacher.
Yeah. Anyways, I would love toabout but I also still kind of

(35:47):
feel like one my body definitelyis not ready. Not even close.
Not even kind of, and to I stilldon't feel safe about because
that's like literally getting upin people's faces and sweating
and like breathing hard for along time, like right up next to
each other. So I think that Nah,fam. I'm good. Like, I don't

(36:09):
want to do that yet.

Shove (36:12):
Yeah, Jesse was saying that they might do it to where
he goes, Jesse. Yeah, that'll belike smaller. Oh, no, it was
Marie. Marie said that theymight change the rules to be
smaller walls. So it would justbe like, two, three? Yeah, isn't
it for it's for the Jaguar. Andso it would just be like two and

(36:34):
one or three and then the jammercomes through. So

Rebel (36:36):
to make it a faster game?
Yeah. So

Shove (36:38):
it'd be less people on the track was people so close
together? I mean, all othermajor sports are figuring it
out. Come on with.

Rebel (36:47):
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's wrestling back in though I feel
like that's what I compare Derbyto. All the time is wrestling.
Probably because what

Shove (36:57):
they're doing is just making them get constantly
tested, but also like, they makemoney from it instead of pay
money. You're making money, you're gonna do anything.
They're like, definitely safeand test negative. Yeah, for
sure. Be able to still play.

Rebel (37:12):
Yeah, that's definitely not the case. For me.

Shove (37:17):
It was it's just like, that's the other thing. Like we
have a shopaholic. It's fun tolike, buy things and paying for
things like that. But it's notfun to like pay for, like Derby,
or bills. Yeah, fun. And it usedto be $40. I was paying $10 a
month, even when I left stoppedplaying, because I was still in
the league because I wanted likethe perks. And so but then now

(37:41):
after the pandemic, now it's $60a month about inflation. So
that's really hard to reasonwe're in it is because they owed
rebel money from pre for thepandemic she had paid for the
whole year. So we're like, well, let's just write it out and see
what happens.

Rebel (37:59):
And yeah, because I definitely can't afford that.

Shove (38:03):
Crazy. No, it's our shopping.

Rebel (38:06):
Well, but even just bills and stuff. I don't know, I feel
like, you know, and that's nottrue for every League, like
every league is different. Like, that's just our league. So

Shove (38:18):
I remember sitting in Derby orientation, and like
being like, okay, seems cool.
And then when they went over, like the price of things, and I
was that person that randomlybought Moxie lollies right
before Dre Derby cuz I was like, well, these are cute, and I can
wear fur, do we? Yeah. And theneveryone's like, well, we would

(38:38):
recommend a speed boat. And Iwas like, Well, I'm not gonna
buy another pair of skis. Oh,Talia couldn't use them, which I
did. But then they're like, youneed full safety gear. I had no
gear. And they were like, thatcould be about 100 and something
dollars. You need a helmet thatcould be $40 then you have to
get insurance. skeetersinsurance was like $85 Yeah. And

(39:01):
then you have an ESP that forevery year, and then you have
play dues. And then that was $40a month and I was like, Oh, my
God. Yeah, I

Rebel (39:15):
remember being like, what am I there's no way I can do
this. I remember that feeling.

Shove (39:22):
Yeah. And I was just like, I can't there's no way and
then I had this I saved up andthen I was like, I think I'd use
my credit card which had like avery low limit on the time and I
was like, Alright, I'm gonnalike figure this out and do what
I can do and I just made it workand lucky enough like the skate

(39:42):
shop had a slight discount forthe derby members back then.
But, man that was tough to belike this is a huge commitment.
But then like once you pay forall you know all your skincare,
you're like, I'm set for themost part.

Rebel (39:56):
Yeah, I definitely put all my Get stuff on a credit
card. Because I was like, Idon't know what this is so much
money.

Shove (40:06):
Yeah, but I think a lot of people especially since
there's so many more skaters outthere, like I hear a lot. I'm
like, Oh my god, Jeremy. Yeah, Iwant to join that. And like, I
think they're not underestimating like, one it's like
you're signing apollyon leadsfor Colt. Yeah, like right now
doesn't feel like it. But whenit's regular, definitely,

(40:27):
because it's like all you know,is like, like already right now,
you probably only have a skater.
So like, in Derby, it's like, that's your own little world.
And then like, you're also goingto bounce but then you have to
be in committees. So even thoughyou're gonna be there, if you
want to be in the league, youalso have to be at a committee,
which means you have a job todo. So like everything self run,
so yeah, yeah.

Rebel (40:50):
And that's true for every league. Yeah, for the most part.
Yeah.

Shove (40:54):
Yeah. And it's just like, there's so many to me, um, how
high you get like, there's somany practices, you have to go
or you won't

Rebel (41:00):
be and then there's like cross training, you have to go
to those different

Shove (41:04):
levels, you have to pass assessments written and
practical. Yeah, that's right.
So it's like, it's cool, becauseyou learn a lot. But I think
people underestimate like theamount of time and money it
takes as well.

Rebel (41:19):
It's definitely time consuming and expensive.

Shove (41:21):
But if you can't afford it, like a lot of leagues do
offer scholarships, or likereduced rates, but you just have
to ask and, like submit anapplication sometimes. And they
can determine like what it couldbe, because I know that there
were some skaters on scholarshipin our league, and I thought
that was awesome. Or sometimesyou can coach and then you don't

(41:41):
have to pay. So there are coolthings like that. And there

Rebel (41:44):
are some leagues that are less expensive than others. And
there are some leagues thatrequire less of their people
than others.

Shove (41:53):
And then there's some that's way more like they want
you there four times a week.
They want you to do CrossFitthey want you to be on a diet
Yeah, that's like crazy, likelook super competitive with
their teams. Like I would neverwant to like I don't want Jeremy
to be my whole life. Like tothat point extra. There

Rebel (42:12):
was a moment in time that I thought I wanted that she was

Shove (42:15):
like, I'm gonna be a derby superstar.

Rebel (42:18):
I remember like trying to manifest that. And I say trying
to manifest because I did notmanifest it obvious

Shove (42:25):
winner. She even had a YouTube channel called keeping
it fresh mate with rebel rouserin her intro, she was in her
Derby. Oh my gosh, I'm so bad.
It was

Rebel (42:37):
so bad. It was so bad. If at first you don't succeed. Try
again. Do something different.

Shove (42:44):
So yeah, you know, you got to get started. Everything
will get you know. Yeah. Butyeah, so Derby is a thing. It's
back. We're still suffering. Idon't know how I feel about it.

Rebel (42:58):
Yeah, I've had sorry.
I've had a lot of people belike, so how do you feel about
Derby now that you're back? It'slike, I love Derby. And I will
always love Derby. I just don'tknow where I stand with like, is
this gonna be my thing that Ido? I don't know. Is it gonna be
something else? That's also only

Shove (43:17):
between like five to eight people showing up? Right?
Yeah, so it's totally differentprice hike, and we're still on a
pandemic. So that's like hardbecause you don't have that
flow. Like, I feel like I'm partof something. And we're all
suffering together. And like thetwo peat tools people are

(43:39):
juniors, so it's like, I love myjuniors. But like, it's not that
I don't really and then like, Itry to censor myself a little
bit more around them, becausethey're kids.

Rebel (43:48):
I don't Yeah, I know. A roller derby league.

Shove (43:51):
But yeah, so it sucks.
Because usually like, Hello,we're all getting back and
trying to be in shape again, like after not doing this. And

Rebel (44:00):
all these kids are just like having no problem.

Shove (44:03):
Yeah, that but what I was gonna say is like, it used to be
like a long line of people. Sosomeone would have to do
something and then you get to abreak, and then someone would do
something or even in a paceline.
And now it's like, oh, twopeople with that. Oh, it's my
turn again. Yeah, yeah. And thento your so I think that's on top
of why I'm so tired. Yeah,

Rebel (44:23):
doing way more work than you ever were before.

Shove (44:25):
Yeah. But yeah, so yeah, roller derby.

Rebel (44:30):
I hope you're enjoying this cozy version of skate date.
All right, next up, we're doingfine your skate day.

(44:53):
Find your skate D is the portionof this podcast where we connect
people skating. With otherskaters in their area, so if
you're interested in havingyourself talked about and amped
up, because you need to findsome skaters escaped with or a

(45:13):
romance with a skater or amentor or some new Skype
mentees, or whatever you want toconnect with, send us your bio,
your pronouns and a littlepicture you and your Instagram
handle to dear skatedate@gmail.com. So today's skate
date is fill up. Yay. My nameOh, hello skate date. My name is

(45:41):
Philip. He him. I am 19 soon tobe 20 Yay. Yay. The love that.
Yay. a college student and Ilive in Gallup New Mexico.
However, I'm planning to move toAlbuquerque, New Mexico next
spring. Okay, fun story. I wassupposed to like my last trip

(46:01):
besides the one to Fresno. I wassupposed to go to Albuquerque,
New Mexico. Like that was whereI was supposed to go before
COVID hit and then it didn'twork, obviously. Okay, I would
love to meet some new people andpotentially make some skate
friends. Currently I'm finishingup my associate's degree and
looking to start anapprenticeship in plumbing or
electrical wiring. Apart fromrollerskating I love gardening

(46:25):
and hiking. Honestly anythingoutdoors II I love but I'm
always down for some coffee orboba and sitting down for good
karma. Love this. I've beenskating since March 2021. And I
absolutely love it. Yes, I amcomfortable going forwards and
doing transitions but still abeginner at the skate park I

(46:47):
have so much more to learn andwith love escape buddy to learn
from and learn with my instantis at Sandy underscore bearings.
Oh, I love that that's such agood name.

Shove (47:01):
That's awesome.

Rebel (47:02):
I look forward to hanging out with y'all socially distance
and Master of course. Also.
Please don't quit Shove We loveyou. Skate date pod wouldn't be
the same without the both ofy'all. Yeah, obviously escape
date pod if it was just me,would not be good. It would just
be escape. It wouldn't be adate.

Shove (47:25):
Let's try to teach Bowie how to talk to the sub. Oh my
god we just get like subs to tolook at this

Rebel (47:33):
picture I fill up Oh, it is really hard to see them on
our Instagram.

Shove (47:39):
When Liza stepped in where we just had more of that
like people. You'd be like, shoves in a mood I need you to
step in for skate date. Let'sjust random people.

Rebel (47:49):
You know what? If we just had random people nearby they
were willing to randomly step inshore but we don't. Because we
never know I don't want to dothat. I want to do we

Shove (48:01):
do it. She's in a monogamous skate day.

Rebel (48:05):
I am.

Shove (48:07):
Alright, find your skate date with Philip. Alright, let's
go to deer shovel.

Rebel (48:26):
In deer shovel, what do we do? Oh no. And deer shovel.
Y'all send us questions aboutanything literally anything? And
then we answer them and we givegood answers. We give bad
answers. Sometimes we don't eventell you what's the good answer
and what's the bad answer? It'sall part of the fun

Shove (48:46):
because we're just full of crap.

Rebel (48:48):
So if you have a question Email us at dear ski t@gmail.com
and we will answer your email Ijust got this overwhelming
feeling of like what are wedoing being so vague? We're just
like sitting on our couch liketalking it feels like when we're
when we're at in the garage. Itfeels like so like we have our

(49:12):
microphones but here it justfeels like we're just like
jogging the game right? Like itdoesn't feel

Shove (49:19):
real but you do this all the time with skates and shot. I
know but there's

Rebel (49:23):
like it's alive of escape jets. Anyways, Okay, so here's
our dear shovel question. Whatare oh dear shovel. Dear shovel?
What are some ways to includeyour non skating partner in your

(49:45):
skate time activities?

Shove (49:47):
Oh, dump them? No,

Rebel (49:51):
no.

Shove (49:53):
Escape from say learn or it's over. No, that is not 100 I
definitely think that it is theydon't even want to skate the
last red flag number one.

Rebel (50:06):
Okay,

Shove (50:07):
I'm just kidding.

Rebel (50:08):
What? Kidding. Okay, so I feel like, Well, I do think that
you should try and convince themto skate. But obviously you
probably already tried that. ButI think that there are actually
lots of things that are reallyfun to do at skate events that

(50:29):
isn't skating, you know, like, most of the time a skate event
happens. And there's like, musicor there's like people just like
sitting and hanging out. Like,it's not always just skaters
skating. Right? Like,

Shove (50:46):
yes and no. So like, for me, sometimes I'm not in the
mood to be around people. Andrebels like, Oh, my Oh, so I'll
go and like, I'll have my skatesand I might like skate around a
little bit. But like, unlessthere's people I know there that
I can like, they're alsochilling on the side, I can,
like, hang out and talk withthem. Sometimes I have talked to

(51:09):
like random people in the skatepark. And that's nice for a
little while. But I feel likethere's not like a lot of stuff
to do. And we still got a rinkand there's like arcade games
and like,

Rebel (51:22):
Well, I mean, because I was thinking like, maybe like at
the skate park like it's usuallyat a park so you could like go
walk around, or like at, likeVenice, for instance. That's
like a skating area. But thenthere's like foodstuffs.

Shove (51:41):
Yeah, but then like their partner would be doing that all
alone is not a fun No. Like, okay, skate stuff that they can
do together without them skatingright? Is that yeah, it's like
time activity non skating. It'slike if they have a bike or a
scooter or something like theydon't have to be in skates was
usually it's all wheels. Allwheels, welcome. So yeah, like,

(52:07):
they could definitely do that.
But they would need some sort ofwills.

Rebel (52:10):
If your partner likes filming, or photography, or if
they've never tried it, and theywant to learn filming or
photography. I feel like that isan excellent pairing of hobbies.
Like a person who's interestedin filming or photography. And
skater I feel like those pairwell together.

Shove (52:29):
Yeah, cuz it's like, I do know some couples that have
lasted years and only one ofthem's a skater. It's rare
because I feel like you seeevery skater roller skater
either dates and other rollerskater ablator or escape. And so
like just happens, but then, like, a lot of people that like

(52:51):
have already been together, andthen they picked up roller
skating. So it's usually like, Ithink the partners end up being
like, what the hell ishappening? Why is this your
whole life now?

Rebel (52:59):
Yeah, totally takes over your life. For sure. Like,
what's

Shove (53:03):
this annoying podcast you're listening to? It's also
roller skating?

Rebel (53:07):
Yeah, yeah. Well, Oh, well. Okay, yes, limited

Shove (53:16):
things you can do. If you

Rebel (53:18):
play roller derby. Your partner can be a official

Shove (53:24):
or ref or a fan or a fan.

Rebel (53:29):
Um,

Shove (53:30):
I think that's it.

Rebel (53:32):
Yeah, I think that's pretty much it.

Shove (53:35):
Yeah, sorry. We suck. I don't warn you. We said dear
shovel. shitty advice. Datashovel is like why do we need
the shovel to dig through theshit

Rebel (53:52):
whatever. I think that was good advice still. Okay, so
guess what, babe?

Shove (53:59):
Oh, man, I do have a five star review.

Rebel (54:01):
We have another five star review. Do you want to read it?

Shove (54:05):
Sure. Every week I look forward to a new episode from
these fabulous scanners. They donot disappoint be hit in the
real world or the world. Lovethe positive energy and push
they give to roller skate makenew skate friends. Plan skate

(54:26):
dates, roller skate emoji heartemoji roller skate emoji. Thanks
to lips for me

Rebel (54:32):
and me loves podcasts.
That's so great. I love that tome, thank you so much me those
podcast. We love me skate dateloves me.

Shove (54:46):
Did you talk about what five star are?

Rebel (54:49):

podcasts You can leave a commentand when you leave a comment,
and you put five stars that itmakes us do a happy dance, and
