Rebel (00:09):
Hey, it's skate day Welcome back everybody.

Shove (00:13):
Yo,

Rebel (00:14):
yo yo yo check it out.

Shove (00:15):
We're not on the couch today.

Rebel (00:17):
We are not we are back in the garage where we belong.

Shove (00:23):
This garage looks really ugly right now there's like, all
kinds of shit with rebels likebusiness. Like random things and
then there's like a tower oflike Halloween costumes and
decorations lore. veryoverwhelming in here at least to
be one of my favorite places tohang out. No, I'm like,

Rebel (00:42):
yeah, there's definitely like a lot of Halloween stuff
right there. And then like a lotof sweatshirts waiting to be
dyed and then costumes rightthere. And then our typical pile
of crap.

Shove (00:58):
a mess, just like skate date. What is skate date? Bam.

Rebel (01:01):
Skate date is a podcast.
And it is a podcast that Shoveand Rebel are on. And it's by
roller skaters who fell in love, and decided to create a podcast
to talk about things that wewould usually talk to people
about on skate dates.

Shove (01:20):
You know what I was thinking about? What? Oh, first,
I'll do the whole line. I'mShove,

Rebel (01:25):
I'm Rebel. Can you dig it? And together we are shovel.

Shove (01:32):
Cuz I kept thinking about what I wanted to say. So. Yeah.
But yeah, I was thinking aboutlike, because I was listening.
I'm back on my, like, myfavorite murder game. And like,
you know, like listening in thepodcast. And I was like, when
are we into the point where wedon't have to say, What's Kate?
I think all the people know.
It's like, why are we saying thesame thing all the time?

Rebel (01:54):
I don't know. I guess I kind of thought we were letting
people who had never listened toour podcast know what it was.

Shove (02:01):
I know. But it feels like read on that. And then it's just
like, I get it. It's Katie, Iknow what you're talking about.
And I think at first I was veryvalid. And we needed to and then
like, it's been waiting, waiting. Like, it's been heavy
on my heart weighing heavy on myheart. I was just like,

Rebel (02:16):
I mean, we don't have to.
I was just kind of doing it outof habit, I guess. Yeah, I

Shove (02:20):
know. But like, now that you're thinking about it, like,
isn't it? It seems like oh, wekeep explaining what it is. And
it's just like, I don't think weneed to.

Rebel (02:28):
I guess my thought was you know how, like TV shows have
an intro. Like I thought it wasjust our intro.

Shove (02:35):
I love I think we should keep the like, I'm sure if I'm
rebel and together we're shovel.
Can you dig it like that? That'sthe tagline. I like, I'm down. I
love that. But I think we don'talways have to explain what

Rebel (02:47):
a date is. Okay. All right. Well, hear it again,

Shove (02:51):
y'all. I know. I want to hear it every time. Go ahead and
tell us right in or put it inthe comments. Yeah.

Rebel (02:59):
Going off of our own guesses about what should be
done.

Shove (03:02):
Yeah. I don't know what's going on my hair today. So I'm
trying to distract everyone withmy boobs.

Rebel (03:06):
Well, it's working. So congratulations. your boobs look
great, baby.

Shove (03:11):
If you're just listening here, sucker.

Rebel (03:16):
So today, we're talking about cosmetology rules and
sponsorships. It's gonna be anexciting episode.

Shove (03:27):
It's really a horrible episode.

Rebel (03:28):
Guess what I'm doing this week.

Shove (03:32):
No one cares. No,

Rebel (03:33):
I want to tell you what I'm doing.

Shove (03:36):
What are you doing? Okay, so

Rebel (03:38):
I am doing this competition thing called the
nutcase nine ball where I'mgoing to a go kart track and I
am racing other roller skaters.

Shove (03:53):
What I thought the speedway in Anaheim Yeah, they
can they can canine canine as adog. Yeah, whatever. It's like
the K one Speedway in Anaheim.
It's like a go kart track. Loseindoors. It's really smooth,
really scalable. They claim thatyou can go up to 40 miles per
hour, but I'm like is that onskates? Are you mean go karts.
But if it didn't go up to 40miles in skates, because you

(04:15):
can't really tell by thedrawing. Like how steep those
little slants are like, That'sinsane.

Rebel (04:22):
I definitely don't think that I'll be going 40 miles an
hour, but I do think that itwill be a very fun experience
and I'm excited to do it. I'mvery excited to have not trained
at all I

Shove (04:34):
can't wait to see you eat shit. Don't worry, cuz Astro
hasn't trained at all youthey're

Rebel (04:39):
really talking to them about it today. And they were
like, did you train and I waslike, No, but you literally do
yoga and I just like

Shove (04:45):
they also like skate vert, and do all this crazy
stuff all day. Yeah. And

Rebel (04:49):
I just like sit on my bed all day long. So you know it
should be interesting. I'mexcited, but also kind of like,
but like I know I'm gonna getout in the first round. So I'm
I'm not too worried about it I'mjust gonna go for the experience
and have some Redbull becausethat's who's sponsoring it

Shove (05:05):
I hope there's some like randos that joins like you at
least make it like two roundsand I'm the prize is like
5000 3000 1000 or somethinginsane like it's a lot of money

Rebel (05:16):
yeah. Yeah it's insane it's

Shove (05:19):
a labor if you don't win it you can't come home.

Rebel (05:23):
Okay, well I guess I got a book with my negative
earnings. Yes. But anyways, it'sa it's free for people who want
to come and attend. And all themoney like I had to pay money to
get my whatever likeparticipation in it. And the
benefits are going to likebreast cancer awareness and

(05:45):
like, money towards that sothat's really cool. Being a part
of that I'm excited. Yeah, sothat's what I'm doing this week.

Shove (05:55):
I'm just gonna drink and yell and be like, oh, like,
that's insane person.

Rebel (06:02):
Yeah. She misses being a derby. sideline person.

Shove (06:06):
Yes, I miss me and Derby widow.

Rebel (06:09):
Yeah. So yeah, so that's what I'm doing this week. Did
you have anything excitinghappened to you this last week?

Shove (06:17):
Um we started a new series on queer girl
streetscape. Hell yeah, we didcalled fat girl tries. This was
something I wanted to do forover a year. And Moxie turned me
down. So

Rebel (06:32):
yay.

Shove (06:34):
So yeah, the first episode, it's all right, I
guess.

Rebel (06:38):
I actually think it's really good. I when we were
filming it, I thought this isgonna be so bad. But then I was
editing it. And

Shove (06:44):
I had a mental breakdown, like a literal. And then I just
came out of the garage and justput a smile on and did it. And
that's how you know, I'mbipolar. That there was no proof
that a bitch is crazy. It waswhat happened my day. So it's
hard for me to watch thatepisode. So here's the next one

(07:04):
being even better.

Rebel (07:05):
Yeah, and I think the only way to go is up. Yeah.

Shove (07:12):
Go down. All right. We haven't had

Rebel (07:15):
Yeah, we do. It's exciting, because it's one of
our favorites. Why it's projectpin up. Hey, babe, did you know
that project pin up makes abunch of really cute like,
Halloween decor? Things that youcould put on your body and on
your skates?

Shove (07:36):
No shit bad project man.
That makes everything cute.
Okay,

Rebel (07:39):
I know. But seriously, though, so I was looking on
their website the other day likeyesterday and I was just
thinking about how totally andentirely obsessed I am with
those pumpkin Bell skate charms.

Shove (07:53):
I was trying to sell them to Healy because I was like you
don't understand. Like they comein different colors. They're
pumpkins, and they jingle? No,there's so cute. Like, um, you
can wear them all the waythrough to December like a
nightmare before christmas. It'slike perfect.

Rebel (08:06):
No, it's literally perfect. I think it's one of the
best, like skate charms thatexist on the market right now.
And not only that, but like Iwas even watching like I was
watching her Instagram and shelike reposted something that
like someone else got an order.
And she was opening up theorder. And it was like skate
bows. And then it was like thiscute little black bracelet. And

(08:28):
then it was like a pumpkin. AndI was like, Oh my god, this is
so cute and curated. And I'mabsolutely obsessed with it. And
what I want to get a little boxthat's curated from project
pinup. And then I thought youknow who else should want to get
a box? All of you because it'sso great. But yeah, so whether
you're deciding to deck yourselfout or deck out your skates for

(08:52):
the holidays, one place that Ihighly suggest that you go is
project pinup. accessories.com

Shove (09:02):
support small skater owned businesses.

Rebel (09:05):
Yeah, and if you're looking for stocking stuffers,
or if you're looking for thingsthat you know, when you're like
you have that random person thatyou're like, what do I get for
this person? Well, a lot oftimes a really cute holiday
accessory would be a greatoption for that person. Or
you're

Shove (09:21):
like screw everyone else.
I hate Christmas and holidays.
So you just buy all the cutethings for yourself. Go to
projects pinup accessories.com

Rebel (09:31):
and use code skate date you get 10% off. Hey, thanks
project pin up for alwayssupporting our cute little
podcast with your cute littleaccessories. So shall we head on
over to the real world?

Shove (09:49):
I think yes. Okay, let's go

Rebel (10:06):
Shove over here. Booty poppin booty poppin Yeah, you're

Shove (10:11):
talking about,

Rebel (10:11):
it'll be pop into the transition music.

Shove (10:14):
So y'all, I don't know if you know this, but I'm in
cosmetology school. Oh, wait, what did she know?

Rebel (10:25):
Yeah,

Shove (10:26):
it's really hard to go to school now because of this new
law that the government arepassed that like everyone was
just quiet about but I guess ifyou were like, owned a school, a
beauty school in California, youknew about it, and like some
hairdressers knew about it. Butmostly it was just like school
owners, which is hella shady.
That like my teacher knew aboutthis the whole time and multiple

(10:49):
people knew and no one wasreally talking about it. But in
California when we are one ofthe states that takes the most
time to get a license as aCosmos student and with Cosmo,
like, I've always said it's ascam because you have to even
when you just want to do hair, you have to do Skin and Nails as

(11:09):
well. But it's 1600 hours, a lothours, like three times more
than a cop.

Rebel (11:19):
While Yeah, just to cut hair.

Shove (11:21):
Yeah, just to cut here and then still like you want to
do nails or become like anaesthetician like you still need
to like take extra courses ontop of that. So it's kind of
like it is a scam just like howI say College is a scam. Like
you want to learn this one thingbut they make you take these
five other classes that you haveto pay for that have nothing to
do with the main thing you wantto learn

Rebel (11:41):
Gen Ed's for life.

Shove (11:43):
It's like what the hell like you just want my money.
Also, it's super expensive totake cosmetology classes. I
don't know if this iseverywhere, but it can be
anywhere from like 14,000 to$35,000 oh my god for 1600
hours. And if you're going parttime, it takes like a little bit

(12:04):
over two years. Unless you're ina pandemic. Yeah.

Rebel (12:08):
It takes like 20 years.
Yeah. And

Shove (12:09):
then if you're full time, I believe it's like a year, a
little over a year, like a yearand a half.

Rebel (12:16):
So how far are you in a cosmetology school?

Shove (12:21):
Well, I am like 630 or 40 hours. Which is crazy because
let me break down what this lawdid. So the law now says in 2022
that if you want to be acosmetologist that it would be
only 1000 hours which is like ohdope but then it's also says if

(12:45):
you just want to be ahairdresser and not do like nail
tech stuff for esthetician it'sonly $600 which means I'm
technically done whoa exceptthere's some little things under
there like now sanitation theywant way more points the test
they got rid of the practicalwhich is insane we'll talk about
that later. Just a written butnow it's more like scenarios

(13:08):
still multiple choice though soit's kind of easy, but they are
gonna make it tougher probablycuz they don't have the
practical So yeah, I couldliterally have enough hours and
then just have to work on somepoints.

Rebel (13:21):
And how long would it take you to work on points

Shove (13:24):
like I'd probably be done like after like two months or
something like unless somethinglike insane because it's like
mostly just sanitation and Ithink one other thing but I have
a lot most of my things are like100 and up I have to work on
like perms and stuff like thatso probably some of the chemical
stuff but like I'm just workingon that the scariest thing is

(13:47):
okay I paid for I've been payingtowards 1600 hours of learning.
So does that mean when I'm readyto graduate like I have to still
pay for that much do I get abreak like I signed a contract
but I'm wondering if thatcontract said for ball blog
hours that you know what I mean?
Like I shouldn't have to paythat much money or they're gonna
be like okay, you can graduatenow but you don't get your

(14:09):
diploma until you pay like$2,000 like that would suck

Rebel (14:14):
I'm pretty sure that's what's gonna happen usually it's
not like the cost is not oursbase the cost is like program
based so they can be like youcompleted the program early
Yeah,

Shove (14:26):
I don't know I just feel like I remember in the pocket
like I couldn't really broke itdown like it comes off to blah
blah per hour.

Rebel (14:32):
Well, they probably did that math for you. So it felt
like less money.

Shove (14:36):
Yeah, I don't know. We'll see what we'll see. I mean, the
writing's on the wall with that, but exciting. No, I did not have
to be in school for another yearin two months as planned. Yeah.
Do you like Okay, do you knowlike, the whole thing like about
like how the test is run.

Rebel (14:57):
I know that like it's really intense and you have to
have a person to bring in withyou. And you have to like do
their hair or something andthey're like people in a room I
think and they're likeevaluating your every move,
right?

Shove (15:11):
No. So you don't get to bring someone with you. It's
First of all, it's like kind offar so they recommend that you
even get a hotel room you staythere that you know exactly how
to get there. Before you show upearly, you have a doll head and
you have a bag that haseverything in it already kind of
sealed and ready to go. You havelike three bags, so you get to

(15:32):
put stuff on, you have your handsanitizer, it's very strict, you
can't have your Apple Watch andthey don't even want to watch it
all. You can't even take yourphone in there. It's very
strict. They want to make sureyou're not cheating. You walk in
there's like people on the frontand then you'll have your
station you have to walk to yourstation, put your bag away and

(15:53):
just stand there and wait youhave a packet that has the same
thing they're gonna tell you, you're not allowed to do
anything until they tell you thesteps and then you set up your
doll head goes on your tripod, you have to wrap it with a cape
and the towel it cannot fall offwhich sucks so of course a doll
head is way smaller but you havehuman sized stuff so like you

(16:16):
will lose points for things likethat. It really depends.
Everyone's watching you butthere's no talking of course
they say don't look over byeverything's like time limited
as well so you have to do thewhole practical if you let's say
you drop something you pick itup and you forget to sanitize
your hands before you touchsomething else like they're

(16:36):
getting doctor you're constantlydocked on all these little
things and it's like verystressful you're gonna cross
check everything the hair partis like a lot of things you have
to do like a perm on one sectionyou have to show like a 10 touch
up a virgin color test like a PTtest which is like where they

(16:57):
test the dye on your neck or apiece of your skin a blood
exposure kid thing like it'ssuper super like a lot to
remember and then you go intoanother room and it's 100
question tests everything fromchemistry where they're asking
you about like fucking neutronsprotons like nucleus and like

(17:17):
all this stuff to like scalelike protons and crazy stuff
they want to know about likelike if you like about seeing
skin cancer what kind of moldlooks like what like anatomy
like how many bones are in thefoot like it's not just like
beauty school stuff like it'slike science as well what Yeah,

(17:38):
and sometimes you get screwedand you might have the test
asked a lot about that and thenit'll be like questions about
like, hair color and cutting andthe history of makeup. Dell
questions skin questions likeall that which kind of sucks as
you're like I'm hoping like heyI'm just want to be a
hairstylist that shouldn't meanthat all my questions would have

(17:59):
to do with like hair Yeah, because they can't really throw
like nail questions and ahairdressing test or like Same
thing with like skin sohopefully that takes some of it
they want you to know anatomybecause they want you to
understand like the shape of thehead and how the hair falls
hairstyle is often are the onlypeople that look at your scalp

(18:20):
so they might see cancer beforeyou know you have it. So they
want you to have a look out theyalso want to make sure you're
not doing someone's hair orsomething like sketch so you
need to be able to identifylike, alas not dandruff like you
have like a disease.

Rebel (18:33):
Oh yeah,

Shove (18:34):
so there is an importance and that's why like they do that
because it's like falls underlike health and safety and just
like knowing things about hands.
Yeah, um, but yeah, so that'sthe practical and then there's
the written and then they letyou know right there if you
passed or failed, and they handit to you, oh, scary. You drive
home either be happy or sad. Nowthat a lot of times you have to

(18:56):
wait like four months and to beable to do it again.

Rebel (19:01):
Oh my gosh, that's so intense. Why? Yeah, so

Shove (19:05):
it's pretty rigorous.
Like he talked about likegetting your master's and like
how it's like yeah, comps

Rebel (19:10):
was rigorous like that, except there was no hands on
thing. comps, will you either doa thesis or you do comps, and
for me comps was three days, three tests, four hours each.
And then you had a defense likeyou had an oral defense that you

(19:30):
had like a committee. And eachof those people on your
committee had written one ofyour questions. And then you go
in a few days or a few weekslater and you have to defend all
of your answers. And thenthey'll ask you more questions.
And you can either pass or fail.
And you can pass like parts ofit and it's also very scary.

Shove (19:47):
Yeah, so I was reading an article that went around with
the law of what it means and agirl's doll had like rolled off
the table and that made her fat.
All right, they deducted her somuch that like that just sent it
over. And like She even said, like I've never had a client's
head roll off right away. Likeit's just weird things on there

(20:08):
you're like, Huh, and like didthey need to change the whole
lot because of stupid stuff likethat? No. You want to know why
they changed law? Why? Okay, here's what they're saying. And
yes, for some people, I'm sureit's true. But I also know the
conspiracy slosh realcapitalistic, most likely real
is way way past Okay, so whatthey're claiming and what is

(20:33):
true, like this does help is tohelp like disenfranchise people
aka people of color people thatare not allowed to financially
be able to attain a licensewhich makes sense because how I
just said how expensive it isand the time like so many people
of color drop out because oneit's just so expensive, they

(20:55):
just have to like can't do itanywhere like I struggle a lot
of times so it's like, first ofall, you're paying like 500 to
$1,000 a month depending on whatschool you go to. So and we're
talking about let's go to CityCollege like you can't get a
scholarship for that like youhave to pay out of pocket and

(21:16):
you can't claim it on your taxeseither. So it sucks so like and
then second like you got tothink about like how we got to
work more like when we don'thave that privilege to just like
go to school full time duringthe day A lot of us are night
students. A lot of people thathave kids like all these things
that like keeps them from beingable to just devote all that

(21:39):
time to going to school soagain, they drop out. So they
figured if they lowered them onhours they have to go so like
technically if you're like fulltime you just want to end you
want to do 1000 hours someone onthe new set like that'd be three
months.

Rebel (21:54):
Like Yeah, so that should make it cheaper. Yeah, so

Shove (21:57):
like the price would go down to um, so that's the whole
like, you know, liberal like, this is great, we're doing it
for the people, blah blah. Andof course I'm like what are
these white men doing for thepeople like they're up for
reason so a lot of hair stylistsare an arm for multiple things
What if there's gonna be aninflux of like hairdresser just

(22:20):
like flooding the market that alot of them are be afraid to
hire them they're gonna feellike they have to teach them
more which I think is kind ofbullshit. Because in school
let's be honest, they don'treally teach you much anyways
they just teach you like here'show to be clean and here's a
basic haircut and here's ablowout like they don't teach
you like the things you learn inthe field like they don't teach

(22:42):
you like trendy stuff like allthat so I feel like a lot of
that you still need I feel likeanyone coming out of school even
with 1600 hours needs a lot tobe taught still unfortunately
because that's how the schoolsjust run which is annoying there
should be like trendy classes.
Yeah, which like if you go tolike john Frieda or like what's
either Paul Mitchell which Iremember looking into and I've

(23:04):
tried school, but like thank GodI didn't because it's even more
money um, like those they mightdo a little trendier things but
then like they also kind of Iheard like they use you and take
advantage of that a lot likeyou're charging a lot of money
but you don't get any of it butwhatever so yeah, so like
they're like worried about thatbut also worried that like they
have to lower their pricesthough because like people out

(23:26):
of school are gonna have theirrates are gonna be smaller so
now it's not going to be ascompetitive the prices but the
number one thing is they'resaying like the people that
aren't like really worried aboutlike, how they're going to
suffer but for the people isthat corporations like these
franchises that cut hair likesuper cuts fantastic Sams I

(23:48):
guess apparently there's anAmazon salon like my god of
course yes all those places aregoing to sweep up all these
people because they're not gonnahave anywhere to go and then
they're going to work them forminimum wage so they're gonna
have like so many people to justlike hire because everyone's
gonna be like, what do I do I'mlicensed so where are they gonna
go they're gonna go to thesefranchises that pay him like

(24:09):
jack shed that sacks because allthe other salons are like we
don't want you we don't thinkyou're even fully trained yet.
Which is like yeah, go there.
Learn as much as possible, thengo to a salon. But yeah, it's a
little out of my saying likeit's all apparent cuz I guess a
lot of that lobby is like theywere backed. This was backed by

(24:33):
corporations.

Rebel (24:34):
Well, I mean, everything is backed by corporations,

Shove (24:37):
but like it was corporations in the beauty
industry. So SAS,

Rebel (24:42):
SAS, SAS,

Shove (24:45):
I'm Maria who's opening he was by Southern discomfort.
She is a roller skater. And sheis a white passim white Mexican
hairdresser. a stripper just allaround like person that believes
in like, everyone should not doblack hair and she is Kinky

(25:07):
Curly, certified, like all thisstuff and like, wants me to like
learn so much like what's helpedmentor me, which is awesome. And
she is trying to pass somethingthat I just talking about, like
how it is good to lower thehours for people and like the
costs. But how like, you can'tjust do that, like you need to
also change the structure ofwhat we're learning. Because

(25:30):
black hair is like one chapterlike one and done. Like there's
no braiding classes, there's nolike, here's how to do natural
hair. Everything is about how tochange the texture, like here's
how you perm, here's how youpressing curl. But that's it.
When they talk about braids, like you're just doing a couple

(25:52):
of braids here and there. Maybeone extension they talk about
wigs and a chapter, but like notreally just black hair, they
zoom over it, they might havesome black clients that come at
night pre COVID anyways, andthat was our only chance. Or if
you're the one black person likeI am right now they want to ask
you a million questions andyou're teaching the class and
that's annoying as well. Sothey're saying like trying to

(26:14):
make something that's like somany hours would be like on
natural hair on braiding. Nowperms like making sure that like
these schools that are readyaren't really like taking that
time to really teach what theirtime now that they have less
time to teach that they'reactually teaching what matters.
Yeah, I

Rebel (26:32):
think that that sounds great, because they're gonna be
way more accountable now.

Shove (26:35):
And a lot of schools are actually like starting lawsuits
against this law. Which iscrazy. What

Rebel (26:42):
are they saying with their like back end for the
lawsuits,

Shove (26:45):
they think they're all gonna lose their accreditation,
because like, they don't reallyhave that much time to prep and
change things. Or now they'regonna have to hire another
teacher, like a teacher thatjust does hair. Because you
can't have someone that's onlydoing 600 hours, sitting with a
class that needs to also do Skinand Nails because then you're
just gonna be like, sittingthere not getting what you need.

(27:07):
While they're covering those.

Rebel (27:08):
Don't you think that's a good thing? I'm feels like, I
feel like that's a good thing.

Shove (27:12):
I don't know. But like, and then the test is changing.
So like, what happens is like, okay, now all these people are
like, Oh, we can graduate nowand we go to take the test. And
then we don't get a good score, like, let's say all of a sudden,
because like my school has areally high passing rate. So now
if we all rush out, and like,I'm sorry, some of the people in
my class or a hamburger short ofAbby mill, the lights are on,

(27:34):
but nobody's home. And if theygraduate, all of a sudden, like,
boom, Oh, I got 600 I never payattention in class, but I got my
hours and they go to take thattest. And they fail. The schools
percentage goes down and down, and they can lose their
accreditation. Oh, crap. Yeah.
So like, that's why it sucks.

Rebel (27:54):
But it's weird, because like, how soon? Like, is the law
already in effect, or 2022?
Because it's like, they have tochange the test. If the
practical doesn't exist anymore.
And only 600 hours are required.
They literally are gonna have torewrite the tests. Yeah, so

Shove (28:11):
everyone's like running around like chickens with their
heads off. Like I can't even getthe information I need like, so
we got like two months. And allI want to know is like, Where do
I need my points? Like, what doI need? How much do I owe you so
I can have a game plan for that.
And just get the hell out ofthere, plan my test, study my
ass off and then take that testhopefully pass the first time

(28:34):
because you also pay like 350 orsomething just for the test. And
it's an all that money likeCalifornia is getting rich
office. And then like takeclass, like take classes with
Murray and like, I've decided Iwant to be a full time
hairstylist. But I want to haveit in my pal like she said she
can teach me like more editorialso so if I do want to work on

(28:57):
sets here and there. Like, Ijust want to have a trade so
that I know if shit goes down. Ihave something to fall back on
that I can do no matter what.

Rebel (29:09):
Yeah, I mean, like, that's smart. Like it's a great
way to prepare and like go aboutlife.

Shove (29:16):
Yeah, one day everyone's like, fuck roller skates, and no
one roller skates ever again andthen Moxie shuts down. Oh,
that'd be a fucking nightmare.
I'll come when I'm like, What doI do now? And I'm like, Oh yeah,
you know how to do here and thenI get a job somewhere doing here
and work my way up and do asmuch as I can.

Rebel (29:35):
You also legitimately furniture at literally any
business ever. So now if it'snot hair rollerskates

Shove (29:42):
I don't want it. Okay, if I didn't have a bad back, I'd be
the rollerskating hairdresser.
I'd end up with so much hair inmy bearings. Okay, remember at
our old house when we would likeskate in the living room. And
then we'd look like at the axleand you'd like have so much hair
wrapped around it so gross orred t gross. did not love that.
Yeah. So that's what's going onin California in the cosmetology

(30:03):
world. She's crazy right now.
And I'm excited, but scared tosee what it means. It's
definitely really hard to belike, keep going to school with
these hours you don't need andthey're not telling you where
you need points. So you'reprobably just getting points and
things you don't even need now.
So it feels very like what's thepoint?

Rebel (30:24):
But I'll get pence the ditching, did he?

Shove (30:28):
I literally talks I teach. And I said, I won't be
there this

Rebel (30:34):
this whole week?

Shove (30:37):
Because I was like, well, Thursdays in that case. I could
go on Wednesday, but then I waslike, what's the point? Yeah.

Rebel (30:45):
Yeah, you should call them like during the day
tomorrow and be like, Hey, tellme how much I owe you. Yeah, I
think that's probably a smartthing. All right, let's get to
the real world.

Shove (31:08):
Hey, babe, are you a sponsored skater?

Rebel (31:10):
Nope. Wouldn't it be cool to be a sponsored skater though?

Shove (31:15):
It is cool to be a sponsor.

Rebel (31:17):
I don't know what it's like. So in the real world,
we're going to talk about beingsponsored skaters. And what's
that like?

Shove (31:23):
But babe, don't you feel like you reap a lot of the
benefits of a sponsored skater?
Yes. Because of association.
Yes. And because for somereason, you're you and you
always get what you want. Butyou always finesse your way you
finagle your way I do

Rebel (31:42):
work, I put in work, and I make connections, exactly.
Exchange things that I have tooffer. So it might not always be
monetarily

Shove (31:55):
Yeah. She like works her way up to like, get those things
like she doesn't just like, it'snot like she's just like, look
at me. I'm cute. And then shegets handed things like she does
do a lot of like, free things.
But then like the benefits arein skate stuff.

Rebel (32:12):
Yeah, that's definitely true. Yeah, yeah, for sure. So
like, while I'm not a sponsoredskater, I could probably still
speak to the experience. Yeah.
And a lot of people think thatI'm a sponsored skater, but I'm
not a sponsored skater.

Shove (32:24):
Cuz you're always like Moxie, Moxie, Moxie.

Rebel (32:27):
Yeah. Yeah, but I'm not sponsored by Moxie. Although at
this point, like I feel like Ishould just be

Shove (32:35):
I used to be on the oxy skate team that it's still some
people think it's a thing but itis not. And some people didn't
even know it was a thing. TheMoxie skate teams use is
something that a lot of peopleeither worshipped or hated.
Because are both because it wassuper awesome like seeing the

(32:57):
Moxie ski team is like what gotme into a roller skating and
outside of Derby. And it wasalways like Rebel and I's joke
like, where the mogh cF team wewere calling the Moxie D team. I
call myself out because I waslike, not even D level.

Rebel (33:13):
Maybe we graduated to deism

Shove (33:15):
um, but like, the reason why people hate it because there
was a skater named Emily Who wasyour typical like, California
slim thick blonde colored eyes.
I'm I remember, but like verylike, just what you see like 60s
pin up like person and likesuper like short shorts. And the
hightop saw totally stunningcrop top, like gap. Beautiful.

(33:39):
But like, that's commercial. Andthat's what everyone sees. And
to the same people will be like,Oh, yeah, Emily was like the
poster child of Moxie for a longtime. And I think at the time,
like it was 13 years ago. I madesense that like, that's when
everyone was infatuated with theblonde, beautiful woman, you
know, I mean, so like, you had awhole skate team. And that's

(34:02):
when people saw like, yeah, theyweren't all blondes, but they
were all then a pigeon was theonly thought one and she wasn't
even that fat. Yeah. And thenlike bonds I was there. But
like, there was mostly the focuson like, the super tongue like
theny. Yeah. So like when youhop oxy skating, and you're

(34:23):
like, oh, California skinnywhite. And it's changed so much
since then. But definitely in myhead. It was like, oh, I'll
never be on that. And I rememberlike Kiana getting on the team
and meeting like oh, wow, likethat's different. That's
freaking awesome. Like theyfinally got like someone block

(34:44):
on the team. And they hadblocked people before like, I
should back up. They had CocoFranklin was on it. But like she
wasn't really present that muchand again, was like super thin
and tall, like black. Maybe andthen like she was no longer on
it. And then they had two blackmen but then like they were both

(35:05):
out of state well like Enzo wasaround but not that much. And
rollerskate Travis, one of myfavorite skaters was on the
team. But he lived in Texas.
Yeah, Texas. So he wasn't ineverything because everyone
wanted to hire the skinny whitegirls for all the jobs,
unfortunately, because societysucks. So I got to see him in

(35:28):
like, skate videos, right? Likeyou knew of them, too, right?
But like so Kiana wasn't thefirst black person but I was
like the first one that was likein California and started being
involved in more things. So Iwas like visual and like photo
shoots and stuff like that.
Yeah, yeah. And then they didhave like Latinas on the team,
too, because there was data andthere was baby girl D, but

(35:52):
still, like very like whitepassing. So a lot of people
still have that like thought ofMoxie in their head of like,
just do better. But like whenyou flash forward, 13 years
later, 10 years later, like nowit's so diverse because like,
there might not be a Moxie skateteam. But there is like

(36:13):
sponsored skaters. Hmm. What doyou think

Rebel (36:20):
about the whole thing?

Shove (36:22):
Yeah. Because like, when you think of sponsorships like
one of the first ones you thinkis like Moxie. And then you
think of like, the slide likewild bones and like there's
definitely more like pop s oneroller skate, like all those.
But like, when you think likeskate team, it was like, oh,
Moxie. And or Civ?

Rebel (36:42):
Yeah, I mean, so I feel like I was less aware of the
like skate teams that wereoutside of Derby. At first, I
feel like my first experiencewith skate teams was missing all
these sponsored Derby skaters.
So like these hyper athleticsponsored Derby skaters who are

(37:04):
sponsored by like frog mouth, and like, s one and red. Yeah,
Redbull and anti AAA and anticand like all of this kind of
seven, right, owl. So that wasmy first like experience with
sponsored skaters. And so frommy opinion, I had always thought

(37:26):
that a sponsored skater wassomeone who's like super freakin
talented, like just high levelat roller skating. So that was
kind of my view of it at first.
And I definitely agree with thewhole like, just feeling like
Moxie was very whitewashed andalso feeling like it was just

(37:48):
like, you had to be this like, beautiful, skinny human, and
also really good at scan myreally, really good at skating.
Like I just always thought everysponsors Gator has to be like,
incredible at skating. And I'veeven heard like, people talk
about that, like, Oh, I'm nottrying to get sponsored yet
because I'm not good enough. AndI think that that's really like

(38:11):
an interesting concept. Um, butI think that as time has gone
on, like, I really liked whenthey when they brought you onto
the team when Moxie skate teambrought you on? And they were
talking about how like, no,we're just looking for people
who represent what Moxierepresents, and like, the

(38:34):
passion behind rollerskating andall those things. And I think
that that approach is the betterapproach. Like I definitely
think that that is the way togo. Well, when

Shove (38:44):
I was on the plane, going to a roll call or maybe we were
like coming back home. I can'tremember. I remember I went with
Astro and DITA and it was myfirst time like going on a plane
somewhere far and then also withpeople that like I knew, but I
didn't know that well. And I waslike, Oh my god, I can't believe
I'm doing this. He like asked meat roller con if I want to do

(39:05):
it. And I was like, This iscrazy. And like in my back my
head I was like, Oh my God, thiscould be the first step to being
on the Moxie ski team. I waslike your crazy calm down. Like
it's just like, they seesomething in you. And they want
you to experience so whatever.
So they took me with them. Iremember sitting next to Esther
on the plane. And they weretalking about the skate team

(39:25):
stuff and gave my advice onthings. And I was like, Oh,
that's crazy. They like reallyvalue my opinion asked me about
skate stuff. And like, we'rereally listening. And I was
like, Oh, this is cool. And thenso I just asked like, what does
it take to get on the Moxieskate team? And then I sort of
said, I don't know, I just askpeople like if i if i vibe with
them, and we get along like, Ijust ask them what they want on

(39:47):
the team and they say yes or noor like sometimes people just
ask me and then like, I listento my gut and I say yes or no.
And I was like, why? Not at allhow

Rebel (39:56):
I thought it happened.

Shove (39:57):
I thought it was like I don't know how cool I get How
many followers you have like Idon't know what tricks can you
do? Yeah And then so like i goti saw i le x late at night like
if I wanted to be on the skateteam and I was like in shock and
I was like of course and then Iwas like that's crazy because

(40:19):
like what Rebel said like theyfigured they saw me as like the
embodiment of what Moxie issupposed to represent. And I
felt like over that time likethe team started getting like
better and better like startedletting go of people that were
like were kind of problematic ordidn't bring anything to the
skate community like theystarted really like looking at
what they were is like one ofthe leading brands in

(40:40):
rollerskating and what they werelike showing the world and
started making those changes

Rebel (40:45):
mm hmm yeah, I definitely think that that is like a good
change that they are making butthen they just like got rid of
it so

Shove (40:54):
yeah, and then I was like man like the mayhem pandemic
started and we're on like, hugezoom call and they're like we're
ending the team and I was so sadI was like, I only got to do one
fun thing and Rebel got to cometo us for like the 187 Moxie,
like promo video when it firststarted and like I was so
excited yeah and then I that ledto me making the the knee pad

(41:17):
fix at knee pad so now like Ican always get free knee pads
like a pad set which is awesome.
So gear for life um, but likegetting the free skates is
what's like super cool like onelike every sponsorships gonna be
different. So like for me it'slike getting the skates like one
a year which is awesome likethat's every sponsored skater

(41:41):
has an opportunity of you reallyneed something like your gears
beat up you need bearings youcan reach out and like I know
some companies like just wantyou to like promo it like crazy
and like only wear their stuffbut like mine with Moxie is like
a little bit different but likeI can't like I wear an s one

(42:04):
helmet all the time. Like Idon't wear the Moxie helmet and
that's okay. And like it's weirdbecause now it's like, I work
for them so I'm not just fullylike it's like I'm sponsored but
I'm also employee like I don'tknow. But yeah, it's like for me
it's my dream like sponsorshipand partnerships. I love it.
What's your dream sponsorship?

Rebel (42:26):
Oh my god what a good question my dream sponsorship to
be honest so not to make it seemlike I don't know whatever Okay,
so I've turned down a lot ofsponsorships show have I've been
offered a lot of sponsorshipsand I've turned a lot of them
down and the big reason for thatis because I was burned so badly

(42:48):
by the whole planet rollerskatething. I was just I was just
burned so so so badly by it andso when people reached out to me
even people that I trusted likeMichelle or like other people
that I got good vibes from I wasstill like you know what I don't
feel comfortable being tied toany one skate brand like I don't

(43:13):
I know that y'all know that Iwas burned by playing roller
skate but like it got to thedepths of my being like it
really jolted we need to do anepisode about Yeah, we do need
to do an episode about that soit like really jolted me and so
like there are a lot ofrepercussions like I can now a
year out a year and a half outof it. I can see waves that it

(43:36):
created and like tendencieswithin me, I guess. Dream
sponsorship would be I mean, Iwould love to be sponsored by
Moxie. I would love to besponsored by Red Bull. Of course
I will never be sponsored by RedBull because I'm not a high
enough athlete. We need a yearsupply every year Yeah, um, but

(43:57):
I would love to be sponsored byMoxie I would love to be
sponsored by you know, I don'tknow the gear and stuff that I
already use. So why just don'thave to buy it.

Shove (44:07):
She got offered like a huge ski sponsorship to like be
put on a team. But the downsidewas they wanted her to only wear
that skate whether in Derby or apark. And then that was like No,
and then they were like, well, what if we even give you two
pairs of skates one for Park onefor Derby. And I was like, I
really like my jacket. So thisisn't gonna work. And the person

(44:32):
that representative from thatskate company actually like
emailed a straight one was likeGezi created a really good skate
there. He got people to missout.

Rebel (44:41):
Yeah, and I think my thing my reason why I turned
down so many besides just beinglike burned is that I feel like
I wanted to be able to beunbiased when it came to making
videos on my YouTube and I stillfeel like I can be even being
sponsored. But I definitely justfeel like you know, at this

(45:03):
point everyone already thinksI'm sponsored by Moxie anyways.
So I'm not currently sponsoredby anyone.

Shove (45:13):
There's like now the new thing is like affiliate so like
more skate shops. And I think Ithink Moxie might have been the
first one who did this duringthe pandemic and was like, hey,
how can we help all theseskaters that are like losing
their jobs like owl, and they'relike, let's make like codes. And
like, it definitely helped like, especially during like, sales

(45:36):
rising like the boom, and areyou tell for skeets like, when I
had to quit my a problematicjob. I was able to live off of
that, like when things were likereally bad, like a course, like,
eventually it was like, No, thisis hardly any money now. But
when I really needed it wasthere so I could pay my bills.

(45:56):
And I was so grateful for it.
And just to be able to like, pose and there was no pressure,
it was just like, post when youwant and share your code, like
this is the thing for you. Noone was like, why aren't you
mentioning your code? Why aren'tyou promoting like it was just
very chill. And it was likesomething accessible for people.
And there's so many skaterswhere they have a large
following or a small following.
Like some people have like 2000,not even 2000, like 1000 or less

(46:20):
followers, and they have a code.
And like affiliate, like theymight have perks here and there.
But like they can have moneycoming in through a skate
company, which is cool. Andlike, I know, like pigeon skate
shop has one as well. And she'slike, a bunch of skater light
roller has one. Yeah, moonlightroller. So like, and it's cool,
because it's like, yeah, it'sadvertising, but they're still

(46:42):
paying the skaters. And I feellike for a long time, people
were like, yeah, you're on ateam. And then like, you need to
make sure you post this often.
And you need to do this and likeyou weren't making money off of
it. But you're like, well, Iguess I get free wills or I get
free bearings, I get freeskates. But

Rebel (47:01):
like when you really think about that, the amount of
money that it costs to give youthat free product in comparison
to the amount of money thatyou're bringing in is like very
small. Yeah. And so that wasalso always a reason why I felt
like I could turn downsponsorships, because I would
think about how much money wouldit cost for me just to buy the
stuff that they're going to giveme for free? And then how much

(47:23):
of my work Am I going to have toput into, like posting and doing
all this stuff? And what are therequirements going to be? And
that's really another one of thereasons why I was like, to being
a sponsored skater.

Shove (47:35):
And then like not to kill people's dreams within the day a
sponsorship is just like, especially skate teams. It's
just marketing. Yeah. Becauselike, that's what's gonna
promote that's like, what peopleare gonna see. And they're gonna
want what those skaters have. Soit is like a marketing thing.

Rebel (47:53):
100% of marketing strategy. That is what skate
teams are. Yeah. I mean, they'realso like a bond and a family
and like, all that stuff, too.
But like, it's a marketingstrategy.

Shove (48:03):
And what's sad is like, I think when, when you see skate
teams, I think we create like, this, like dream of like, Oh my
gosh, a group of skaters thatare best friends that are
skating together all the time, like, and it's, it's an
illusion, it I think that'sMax's fault. I'm gonna be

(48:24):
honest, like, whether it's Civor antic, like one. A lot of the
times those people don't evenlive next to each other. Like
you're just seeing like what yousee from photoshoots and special
events, or like onlineinteraction. Yeah. And it's
always like, I literally had askater that was like, Oh, I have
this dream of going toCalifornia. I have this picture
of the Moxie skate team. Andthat's just what I want. Like, I

(48:47):
just don't know why I don't haveskate friends like that. And
then kind of like, wait on myheart. Like, I wish I knew how
to, like I didn't want to breaktheir heart on the spot and be
like, that's a lie. I know thosepeople talk to each other.
Because like,

Rebel (49:01):
but also, I think, yeah, like,

Shove (49:03):
I want to be honest, like, it's just like, because a
skate team is just made ofsponsored skaters. So it doesn't
mean you have to be friends youmight get along or just like we
all know, like, we're you havefriends and then you break up
over time. Like you we havedistance. And I think like when
you're in a skate team for somany years, that's gonna happen
life just that way. So I do kindof like the fact like, I

(49:24):
remember when Astro said like,we're breaking up the skate
team. It was because they didn'twant to be this exclusive. Like,
we're better than you likeclicky thing. They want it to be
like, we're all just skaters. Weall skate, you can skate with
us. Here's some people that werejust like, wow, this person

(49:44):
really represents a brand andwe're gonna flow skates to them.
And like, just give out skatesrandomly to people that like do
good in the community, ratherthan like how this team that
like everyone idolizes and likehas this weird feeling that the
team did. Have, which I totallylike respect. And I see. So it's

(50:05):
like, I want to say like, likewe always say, like Don't
believe everything you see onthe internet. I mean,

Rebel (50:10):
like when you watch a skate video, or like an
advertisement that has skatingin it, and it has multiple
skaters in it, and they all looklike they're having a grand old
time, they probably don't hangout like that all the time.
Like, chances are high. Like, for example, like we've been in
several, like skating, likerandom, like commercials and

(50:32):
stuff like that. And like, wemet most of those people that
night or that day, like, and soI do think seeing it as an ad,
or like a marketing strategy iskind of like grounding,

Shove (50:47):
I would say, That's why I like I think I enjoy working for
a roller skate company, likebeing an employee, even more
than a sponsored skater. Becausenow all my co workers are
skaters. So we actually do skatetogether. And like, we do have
fun together. And I love that, like, they've come to the house
and skated, like, if you've seenthat video on YouTube. Like,

(51:08):
that's real. Like we've hadpeople over literally just to
hang out. Yeah, and it's justlike, it's chill, like, we can
take our skates to work andskate together in the parking
lot, or we're rolling around andwe talk about skate stuff and
like what we're working on andthat's way more real like with
like my Moxie team as in workteam than like, it was with like

(51:30):
my, the Moxie skate team. And solike, just remember, like, Don't
idolize that thing. Don't likemake it your goal to get
sponsored. Like, make it yourgoal to just like, make skate
friends and like, meet skaters.
Because like that's being on atskate team or being sponsored
isn't gonna solve your problems.
Unless you're like, financiallystruggling and you're like,

(51:52):
well, that's how. But even then, like, there's other ways.

Rebel (51:58):
Yeah, totally. Wow, we got real, got real in the real
world. Alright, let's move on tofind your escape date.

(52:21):
Find your CD is the part of thepodcast where we find you escape
date, and you send usinformation about yourself and
we gas you up, and we helpconnect skaters to other skaters
around the world. And if youwant to find a skate date for
just people to hang out with, orfor people to be romantically

(52:44):
involved with, or for mentors orfor skate colleagues, just write
in to dear skate date@gmail.comyour skate date@gmail.com your
personal bio, and some pronounsand some nfo

Shove (53:02):
and why you want to start a roller skate cult. Yes.

Rebel (53:07):
And we will decide if we want to join or not.

Shove (53:11):
But it's underground.
It's the cult of

Rebel (53:12):
shovel.

Shove (53:20):
Hi, shovel. I, I am a mom in my 30s from Ohio, Ohio, who
usually escapes alone after workor in the mornings with my
kiddos. I am a longtimerollerblader who decided to
attend this roller skating crazeduring pandemic and it was a
whole new sport. Love that. Inever fall with my rollerblades.

(53:43):
But I could not stop stopfalling. When I first started
quad skating. Side note when Imet with this guy from this
company, he was talking to meabout how like rollerblading was
so much easier and that likelike was harder and that like
roller skating was easy that allages could do it and all this

(54:04):
stuff. And I was like, Huh,you're so wrong, but I was just
shaking my head because it waslike a business. Interesting.
Yeah. But yes, roller skating isharder. Okay. I definitely
progress and attempted a 365skate challenge but fell off due
to you know, life. Yeah, I doknow. I skated in the Columbus

(54:25):
Duda. I mean, why this is sofunny the scene as well down,
dude, ah, da parade, which ischallenging and so fun. I would
love to try a skatepark but it'sdefinitely intimidating. You'll
Yes, we'd like to find more of acommunity of skaters maybe here.

(54:46):
Or wait skaters here maybe evenparents. Anyway, anyways, it's
like a skate date playdate. Oh,love that. Love it. Anyways, I'm
an artist mom, plant enthusiastsenvironmentalist vocalist Holmes
Better, who loves techno metal?
jazz, folk and experimentalmusic?

Rebel (55:08):
Oh my God, and the color using capital letters. Orange.
Amazing.

Shove (55:14):
My Instagram handle is at skater racket. I wish it was
skater ratchet. But skaterracket, pronounced skater
racket. It's a play on my music,or sorry, it's a play on my
artist, musician name, scatterracket. You may find at scatter
dot racket when searching thatis my art page. Get me back on

(55:38):
my game. Let's learn new tricksor go on trails, or through the
city and Columbus helped me notbe scared of skate parks.

Rebel (55:48):
And this person's name is Katie. So yay, Katie. So if you
are Katie ski day, then hit themup at Skeeter racket. And if you
would like us to read yourescape date send an email to Dr.
Skate date@gmail.commy gosh Shove is literally

(56:22):
trying to stab me Stop deershovel. Deer shovel is where you
write in your questions and weanswer them whether it's good or
bad answers, it doesn't matterwe just answer them. So today's
dear shovel is dear shovel. Whatare your best and worst
Halloween costumes that you'vedone over the years? I have the

(56:44):
word love a Halloween costumeenthusiast who has no idea what
to wear. Okay, so my worstHalloween costume was all the
years of my life when I wasn'tallowed to dress up for
Halloween and it was just me inwhatever I was wearing. Hiding

(57:05):
in the garage painting with allthe lights off because my
parents wouldn't let me turn onthe lights cuz I didn't want
people to come up to their doorand I was scared so I would just
like three are in the garage. SoI guess I dressed up like an
artist for all those years

Shove (57:26):
this is why we were like rebels so fucking weird. Like
Yeah, I hear the stories of heryou didn't have a chance.

Rebel (57:36):
Yeah, so that was my worst what's your worst?

Shove (57:42):
Halloween is like usually like that's my Super Bowl. So I
always usually end up with morethan one Halloween costume and I
am all about DIY I think you'rea fool if you spend money on a
costume at a store when you canjust build upon it yourself
easily. You can go through 15for the outfits my favorite kind

(58:04):
of costumes are cosplaying acharacter and like finding those
clothes and building it yourselfand like making stuff with it
and the other one like wouldalways be like a gory when like
you can make so much with likesome liquid latex and some paper
towels or toilet paper and somefake blood and you can just be
whatever you want. And so it'susually like a scary one and my

(58:26):
cosplay one and it's usuallyreally good so like I like
everything I've done from likeUrsula to being a psycho clown
with like my mouth cut open withlike stitching and I've done
like the whole comic book zombiewhich I might do again for the
actual Halloween Day this yearfor like my third costume don't
know yet, but I've done so manylooks insane and every time

(58:49):
people are always like oh mygod, like it's like hello I'm
gonna make an artist so it'slike comes easy for him.

Rebel (58:56):
Yeah, I just realized that I need it as something to
wear on actual Halloween day.

Shove (59:01):
Yeah, you need three costumes. Well yeah, sure

Rebel (59:04):
one I'm gonna wear that again. I already wore it.

Shove (59:07):
So I'm my worst costume even though it was beautifully
done and like I took so muchtime but I'll say it's worse
because it's now I know howproblematic it is. A decade ago,
the world wasn't so easy. Weweren't that knowledgeable and

(59:29):
things like we didn't have asmuch information. It was plain
ignorance. And so that's why Ithink it is bullshit when people
like push it from like 10 yearsago and they're like picture
Isn't it like this is racist andyou're like, Whoa, I know that's
racist now but did not know backthen or did not know that was
like, even problematic. So I wasa day of the dead sugar school,

(59:54):
Katrina two years and I rememberlike I had a beautiful floral
piece that I made I took likehours painting on like perfect
flowers and school makeup. And Iwore this beautiful lace and a
course that a long skirt. Andlike went to a party and then
like there were it was like aMexican party and other people

(01:00:15):
were dressed like that. And likeall my friends loved it. Love
doesn't matter. You can't belike, Oh, my brown friends liked
it. So it's not racist. Like,no, it still can be problematic.
So when I got older, like I'malways like, oh, but I think
don't wear someone's culture asa costume. Yeah. And then like,

(01:00:37):
such as when I was a kid, myparents did put me in like a
jasmine costume. And when I lookat that, I'm like, like, you
know, I wouldn't say worse, itwould just be like, Oh, I would
get canceled if I did that now.

Rebel (01:00:54):
Yeah. Um, yeah, I, I mean, I didn't start dressing up
for Halloween until I starteddating chef. So I have almost no
experience for that except forone year when I told my parents
that I was going to like aharvest pumpkin patch thing. And

(01:01:15):
then me and my friends dressedup like 80s rock band members.
And we teased our hair supersuper big and we put that spray
color in it. And we wore leatherjackets and we were like color
dice and we walked around theneighborhood. And I was like God
so bad. But like besides that Inever dressed up for Halloween

(01:01:39):
before

Shove (01:01:39):
Yeah, she was just wear all black and then like,
whatever he will guess she wasshe'd be like, yeah, that's what
I am. I that

Rebel (01:01:45):
is definitely what I used to do. Yeah, one time I dress up
like Michael Jackson.

Shove (01:01:51):
And she didn't have to do blackface because Michael
Jackson looked like a whitewoman.

Rebel (01:01:56):
Well, I never even considered a bad face. But I
know

Shove (01:01:59):
that when people are like, Oh, you just as a black
Queen, and it's like no, no,just as a black person that
looks like a white woman. So itwas perfect. Probably right to
see that brown color

Rebel (01:02:13):
is really good. No, I worked sunglasses. And then I
had this like really cool. Ifound this like, sequined
shoulder pad dress thing that Icut up and then I like pinned it
onto a shirt so it looks reallycool. And then I had these
loafers and then I was like,

Shove (01:02:29):
once we went to Cuba and we went to this club, and there
was a Michael Jacksonimpersonator in Cuba. Yeah. And
like, I don't even think hespoke to us. I don't remember if
he talked but I don't remembereither. He acted just like
Michael Jackson. And then likehim and Rebel had like a dance
off and then like Rebel was likehanging from the rafters. Yeah,

Rebel (01:02:50):
they had like rafter things. Awesome. It was awesome.
That was that's one of myfavorite memories of my life.

Shove (01:02:57):
Yes. Sorry for people that are gonna be like, fuck
Michael Jackson like, okay,yeah, that's a whole nother a
whole nother debate. We're justtelling the story. So please
don't get mad.

Rebel (01:03:06):
Yeah. Okay, so Best Costume.

Shove (01:03:11):
Best Costume?

Rebel (01:03:14):
I know what mine is. My Best Costume is definitely when
I did Tank Girl when I did TankGirl with you. That was my best
couple costume and we did TankGirl and jack girl. And it was
so good. That was my best onethat I've ever done. Everything
was DIY. My Mad Max one waspretty good too. But like but

(01:03:34):
jack I mean Tank Girl like, itwas really really good. But Mad
Max is probably like, second.

Shove (01:03:44):
I don't know best. I don't know. I like all of my
costumes.

Rebel (01:03:47):
Well, you have to pick one for the sake of answering no
question. I think yourBeetlejuice one was pretty damn
good.

Shove (01:03:55):
That's one of my least favorite so it was like okay, I
said I wanted to gather soquick. It's like clothing my
makeup was good but the clothingwas like whatever for me

Rebel (01:04:04):
Hmm, well, okay, I guess that chef's not gonna answer the
question Nope. I thought yourMiss Piggy outfit was pretty
good. Yeah, that was a good oneone time Me and Shove were Miss
Piggy and Kermit

Shove (01:04:19):
when everything you do is perfection it's hard to choose
the best

Rebel (01:04:22):
Wow. Okay. Well

Shove (01:04:26):
for the pumpkin queen.

Rebel (01:04:30):

other people and then we canlike have more people as in our

it works. But

I haven't looked at our analytics in like, a year.
That's because how many peoplelisten to our episodes, like at
least 300. And then we have 300on YouTube roughly. So about 600
people listen to an episode.

Rebel (01:05:16):
That's pretty good.
That's a lot of people.

Shove (01:05:19):
600 people don't hate us, or they do hate us and they
listened to us and they likeAngry escape. I kind of like
that more. They're like morereasons to hate I'm they're just
waiting for us to say somethingproblematic. So they're like,
