When I stand in the deepest presence of my own being, I'm
able to be fully witnessed in who I am.
What is up, guys? And welcome back to Skinny
Dipping, the podcast. I'm Kayla Rose, I'm your host.
Let's dive into it today. We're going to have a little bit
(00:22):
of a shorter episode, but I justreally wanted to come and talk
about the power of performance and the presence that it
creates. Because if you don't know, if
you're new, this is the season of reclaiming wholeness.
And in that, that means reclaiming all the parts of who
we truly are. And for me, performance is such
(00:46):
a big part of who I am and what raised me and who I grew up to
because I grew up in theater, musical theater.
I grew up doing dance and balletsince I was five years old.
I played piano since I was sevenyears old and would perform at
piano recitals. I would sing in front of people,
I would dance in front of people.
I would perform my words in front of people.
(01:09):
I would show up on social media and the performance of my art or
here on the podcast and share mywords as if they are poetry.
And it has fucking changed my life.
Performance has shaped who I am so deeply.
And I had to talk about it on today's episode because it is a
part of reclaiming wholeness andreclaiming who I am.
(01:30):
Because I feel like when I was younger, it was so easy to be in
that performance energy, right? Because you're in programs in
school and you have the opportunity to perform in front
of people at dance recitals or musicals or whatever it is for
you. But also, if you're not a
performer, let's just say, let me just say if you hop on a
(01:51):
sales call or a business call, you are a performer in some way.
If you are an athlete, you are aperformer in some way.
Because for me, performance means showcasing your gifts and
being completely present and engulfed in the current moment
that you're experiencing. So performance is not Just
Dance, ballet, piano, all these things that I did.
(02:14):
Even though that's my experience, it can also be
literally like meeting new people.
Sometimes meeting new people. Like when I'm out is like a
fucking performance show. And I'm so present and engulfed
in that moment and it just creates this energy of look at
me because I shine. And performance can be in that
(02:35):
outward way, but it also can be in a soft way of just being
witnessed in who you are and your gifts.
And I just think that when you're younger, it's way easier
to tap into that. There's way more opportunities
to be in performance mode, whether you're an athlete or an
artist. And now as an adult, it's like I
need to purposely go out and find those places and actively
(02:58):
search for those places that I have an ability to perform.
And for me, that was diving backinto pole and learning pole
dancing because that was so incredibly challenging.
And in that challenge comes concentration.
And in that concentration, it put me in flow state.
So I think today we're gonna talk about flow state, we're
(03:19):
gonna talk about performance, we're gonna talk about mastery
and concentration and being witnessed in your gifts.
And I'm just so incredibly excited because this is just a
part of who I am. And I'm grateful to come here
and share this with you guys because it is a part of who I
am. So yeah, it really did shape who
(03:39):
I was because I think the confidence that you get from
being witnessed in your gifts isjust unbeatable.
It creates this inner unshakableconfidence that can carry you
throughout life. And I think confidence is one of
the main pillars of magnetism and manifestation is truly
loving and truly honoring who you are.
And I think being witnessed by others challenges our ego to be
(04:06):
seen in our imperfections and through the acceptance of being
seen and witnessed in our imperfections and in our
mistakes and in our slip ups andin the potential for us to mess
up in front of people that is soincredibly vulnerable.
I think that challenge creates such a deep resilience with a
(04:26):
within us. I think that challenge creates
such a deep resilience within usthat says it doesn't matter if I
mess up, as long as I show up. That's what matters.
And that's what performance taught me.
That's what dance taught me. That's what you know, music and
performing piano taught me. It also taught me how to be on
(04:48):
when I needed to be on. You know, how to click in and
just be like, I am in beast moderight now.
Nothing is going to distract my focus.
I am here in the moment and I amdancing with life in whatever
art practice I'm practicing. Or you know, honestly, this
conversation originally came up in my mind because I was talking
to my boyfriend about how being an athlete is also being a
(05:12):
performer. Like being an athlete is also
being a performer because you'rebeing witnessed in your gifts
and you're being witnessed in the potential for mistakes and
slip ups. And that vulnerability creates
such resilience that really creates this deep internal
motivation and deep internal intuitive confidence.
So I think as adults, it's so incredibly important for us to
(05:35):
find the opportunities for us toperform for others because even
if it's just on a sales call or on an interview, right, for a
job you're getting and you're kind of putting in this
performance mode, like lean intothat.
Like it feels like a high. It feels so incredibly good.
Also, before we strip down and dive in, I know I've already
kind of jumped into the episode right away.
(05:57):
I was just really excited to just start talking about this.
And the sun is going down right now.
And I'm like, OK, like there's only there's only so much sun in
the day for this episode. But I just kind of dove right
in. But I'm Kayla Rose, obviously,
if you don't know. Hi, I'm the host of Skinny
Dipping, the podcast. We talk about mental health
here, spirituality. This is a podcast for artists
(06:20):
and creatives. And, you know, everybody in a
transitionary period in their life or people who are in a
joyful period of their life or somebody who's in a confused or
lost or heavy period in your life.
This is for everybody because nomatter where you are at in life,
it's important to have a spiritual practice because that
spiritual practice, that mental health practice grounds us in
(06:43):
who we are. So if you're new here, click
subscribe, click follow. Remember that you can leave a
comment, leave a review, leave arating.
It really does mean the world tome.
I love you guys so much and jointhe Soul and Progress community
'cause there's a free trial and we're doing a competition right
now and the 1st place winner gets a $200 Visa gift card.
So let's drop down and dive in. This is skinny bang.
(07:08):
So for me, reclaiming wholeness means tapping into the version
of my younger self that loved performing that version of
myself that was like, mom, dad, can I perform for you and like
me and my friend will do this dance for you and then I can
sleep over at her house as a reward.
Like, let me show you that I'm so serious that I want to have
(07:28):
this sleepover like that energy that is reclaiming wholeness
within myself because I'm like, wow.
And I want you to tap into that energy of that almost like that
Leo line that wants to be seen, wants to be witnessed.
There is a part of you, if you are listening to this episode
and it found you today, I bet there is a part of you that is
actually fucking begging to be witnessed and begging to be seen
(07:52):
in your gifts, in your abilities.
And you know that. And maybe you let her free.
Maybe you let her go. Maybe you let her shine in the
way she deserves. And maybe sometimes you hide her
way and maybe sometimes you selfsabotage and maybe sometimes you
don't show up to the best of your ability or even show up at
all because you are worried of being witnessed in quote UN
quote failure. You will not fail if you show
(08:13):
up. The only way that you can fail
is if you don't show up at all. And all I know is that art
performance is a fucking spiritual act.
It is whether you're an athlete and you're playing in a
volleyball game or running in a track meet or in like a soccer
game, like that is a dance with life.
If you're a dancer or a pole dancer or a singer or a musician
(08:38):
or you're a live artist in some way, a Hooper, whatever it is
for you, maybe it's just speaking, talking, writing
poetry. I'm begging you to do one thing
this week that is going to put you on the path that in this
next four to six weeks, you willbe seen in some way by someone
with your gifts. Even if it's just pulling out
your guitar on a night with yourgirlfriends and playing for them
(09:00):
and being like, I'm really nervous, but I want to play you
the song being seen in your gifts.
Just being like, it's OK to admit I'm really fucking nervous
right now. I'm shaking.
But I'm doing this because I know that it creates confidence,
it creates resilience, it creates strength.
And that's why I'm doing this and showing up because it is a
spiritual practice to show up for yourself in that way.
And when I was thinking about the power of performance,
(09:24):
because The thing is, my poll teacher told me this Madison
Camino, I fucking love her shop, her line soak in Earth.
She is literally amazing. I've had her on the podcast
before. She was like, we need to be
performing more because performing equals presence.
You are dancing with the presentmoment.
And that's why I loved taking onpoll, you know, in my adult life
(09:44):
and learning a new skill that I had never done before and doing
something extremely challenging.Because if you know anything
about flow state, the key is to stretch but not snap.
You want it to be just hard enough that it is difficult that
you need to concentrate and focus because that puts us into
that deep flow state and it activates, you know, those
neurons in our brain that just allow us to flow.
(10:07):
And it allows both hemispheres of our brain to intercommunicate
so we can come up with more creative solutions.
And just everything is effortless when you're in flow
state. But it has to come from this
difficulty, from this challenge, and by stretching but not
snapping 'cause it can't be too difficult that you get
frustrated and give up. This is where we create such a
deep state of concentration thatit leads to flow state and it
(10:30):
leads to an immediate shortcut to the present moment.
And that's what I love about flow state it, and that's what I
love about performance. It is flow state and it requires
concentration and it also requires mastery.
And mastery is something that isso important for me in my like
hierarchy of needs. Like for me mastering something
(10:54):
and becoming really good at something and learning about
something and becoming educated and engulfed in it.
For me that is so fulfilling andso satisfying and really fills
me up from the inside out. And that's why performance is so
big, because whatever you're performing is a skill that
you've worked on and you've dedicated yourself to.
And in life, it doesn't matter what you dedicate yourself to.
(11:15):
It doesn't matter what. Just dedicate yourself to
something. Because when you dedicate
yourself to something, you are actually dedicating to yourself.
Because if you are devoted to something that brings you joy
and you learn about it and you master it, and you put time and
energy into it, it is really putting time and energy into
yourself. It is just.
(11:36):
True self love. True self love for me isn't
lying in bed doing my face mask watching reality TV, even though
I would love to convince myself that that is self-care for me
because sometimes it feels like that's what I need and I allow
myself to do that. But the truth is the deepest
form of self-care and self love is literally showing up for my
art, showing up for my creations, showing up for my
(11:58):
gifts and singing and dancing and writing and speaking and
doing these things because this is what brings me joy is being
an artist and being a creator. And if you're listening to this
episode, I know that you fuckingget it.
And I think there's two different aspects to this
performance energy. I feel like there's a childlike
version that's like play, exploration, curiosity.
(12:21):
And then there's like a higher self version of performing,
which is like deep presence. And it's actually like a deep
prayer every, every single time you show up in a performance
when you're present with that moment, it is a prayer to
yourself. It is a prayer to the universe,
to God, to your spirit guides. It is a prayer to your gifts.
It is a prayer to you know the universe for giving you these
(12:42):
gifts, for God, for giving you these gifts.
This is the year that you quit nicotine and I'm going to hold

have people that have your back because for me, I've been
experiencing grief lately. I've been experiencing loss.
And with that, it's so importantto have people that support you,
whether that's a healer, a therapist, community, friends,
(14:09):
family, a mentor. Whatever it is just.
Having somebody to talk to so you don't have to do it all by
yourself, you know, and you can externally process.

Skinny dipping. And it is a prayer of thanks to
(14:52):
that when you show up in this way with deep presence.
And I think, you know, having both of a childlike play
presence, curiosity and having that deep essence of spiritual
presence and deep prayer is so important.
And live the middle way, you know, live the balanced way,
live where you are experiencing both the childlike, not childish
(15:14):
childlike and the, you know, higher self-expression of this
performance, of this flow state of this mastery.
So what can you do this week? Number one, I want you to find,
I want you to write out ten of your greatest gifts.
Just get super clear. What are your gifts?
Now write out what is the way that you love expressing
(15:36):
yourself the most, what brings you the most story?
And you can write up to three things and just get really clear
about this. And simply by getting clear and
setting the intention, you are already setting yourself up, up
for success to bring more of this art and more of this
performance and more of this prayer into your life.
The second thing I want you to do is find an opportunity near
(15:56):
you. OK, So for me, I can go to
bachata class. I can go to heels class.
I got a singing teacher and I'm like starting to like work on my
vocal gymnastics, whatever. Find something near you that you
can go to and it can almost put you in a performance mode,
whether it's karaoke with friends or, you know, you go to
a rider's circle or you, I don'teven know.
(16:19):
Maybe you go play a pickup soccer game or something, or you
go play a pickup basketball game, or you go to, you know,
the gymnastics place by your house on a Friday and just play
around and, you know, do the flips that you used to do on the
trampoline when you were a kid. Like, it's OK if no one's, like,
directly looking at you. But just being in public and
(16:39):
doing something like this will allow you to practice being
witnessed in your vulnerability, being witnessed in your
performance, being witnessed in your presence and being
witnessed in this prayer. Yeah, we love it.
I think sports, music, dance, any art, you know, it's all flow
state. It all counts.
Even just like going, I don't know, like even like selling
(17:02):
something like at the farmers market, going and selling your
jewelry and putting on a performance in that way and
being seen in your gifts from what you've created by other
people face to face, that is fucking life changing.
That is going to create resilience.
That is what you need. I swear to God, this is what you
need. It feels so good.
It feels so empowering. And the challenge in this is
(17:22):
that when we are performing, we are unguarded, we are vulnerable
and we're being witnessed in ourvulnerability.
And I think that is so fucking beautiful.
And yeah, that's really it I gotfor today.
I guess this is like a shorter episode, but I just really
wanted to talk about the power performance.
And I want you guys to come on the Soul and Progress community
(17:44):
or comment below in the commentson Spotify and just tell me,
like how you would like to show up in this way?
What thoughts have come through for you in this process of us
having this conversation today? Because whatever thoughts are
coming up and whatever downloadsare coming up are coming up for
a reason. So please trust that.
Please listen to that. Please do something about that.
(18:06):
Go journal about this because I feel like this is something that
you need to reflect about on your own.
Like you need to go and reflect on this because our experiences
are going to be different. But I have a feeling that me
talking about this unlocked something within you and now
you're thinking, and now you're getting ready to figure out how
you want to express yourself. So be seen, please.
(18:28):
Like be seen in your art, be witnessed in your gifts.
People need it. The world fucking needs it.
The world is fucking bleak. Like there is so much fucked up
shit going on, guys. Like, I'm not going to sit here.
And like, it makes me so sad. Like seeing indigenous peoples
being wiped out and then, you know, the government wanting to
(18:49):
straight up like build a Vegas on top of it.
And like, just the way that the government and the 1% are
infiltrating our resources and just creating this really
destructive world is really fucking scary.
Like, I'm not going to lie. Like it's something I think
about every single day. Like the anxiety, I know you
(19:09):
feel it too, The anxiety that I feel from the world.
And not to make a whole switch here, but This is why art is
fucking important. The reason why art is fucking
important is because the world is fucking bleak and the world
is fucking dark sometimes. And you know what makes it
better? Your art.
Your joy, you expressing yourself, you being in whatever
(19:30):
modality of expression that you desire.
That makes the world a fucking better place.
And we can't do a lot sometimes it feels like.
But you know what we can do? We can show up in resilience
with our joy and with our art and with our creation.
And we can do that. And we can show up.
And we can speak up for people who can't speak up for
themselves through our art. It is so incredibly important
(19:53):
that we're speaking up for thosewho cannot speak up for
themselves, and that we speak upfor the planet and the animals
and we speak for the nature thatcan't defend itself at this
current moment because it's being attacked.
And it's really fucking scary. And that's why the power of your
art, your performance, your flow, your presence, your prayer
(20:13):
is so incredibly important. And I want you to not think that
it is frivolous because I get it.
I think that sometimes too. I'm like.
Why am I? Even sharing my art, why am I
even doing this podcast? Like there's so much more
important shit going on the in the world.
Like, why do we have to talk about like magnetism and
confidence manifestation 'cause it brings me joy, 'cause it
brings other people joy. Because it is empowering,
(20:34):
especially for women. It is so incredibly empowering.
And you know what? It is so a part of culture to
think that what women like, you know, like crystals and
spirituality and all of these things that we love are
frivolous. But it's not, it's not
frivolous. It's fucking magical.
And if we? Deem it magical.
It is magical and just with everything going on in the world
(20:55):
and how fucked up everything it is, it's like please share your
art, please share your creations, please speak up.
Please be be brave enough to be witnessed and be willing enough
to be seen in your vulnerabilitybecause that will allow people
to see you in your gifts. And the world needs your gifts
right now more than ever. We need your art, we need your
(21:16):
gifts, we need your creation. I cannot emphasize it enough.
We need you, the world needs you.
So please show up, please make an effort in the next four to
six weeks to do something to be seen on your art and report
back, please, and do the journalassignment where you write down
your 10 gifts and then you writedown your three favorite forms
of expressing yourself and get really clear on that because
(21:38):
this is important. Even though it seems like
there's so many other things that are more important, your
work, finances, relationships, drama, blah, blah, Put all that
to the side for one second. This is what is important
because this is going to fill you up from the inside out so
that you are overflowing from a full cup.
You will be giving from a full cup when you pour into your joy,
(21:58):
when you pour into your art through this cheat code of the
art of performance and being in flow state and going and doing
that. Pick a volleyball game that
you've been begging yourself to do or go and sing karaoke at
that bar that you're really scared to, maybe even by
yourself so nobody knows you just be fucking brave.
Do something courageous. Do something different.
(22:20):
It feels so good. The other day I was on a boat
with my friends and they pulled out the ukulele.
And my friend was like, yeah, let's really get at singing.
Have her sing. And I was like, ah, my voice was
shaking and I sung anyway. And it's like, do it while your
voice shakes. Do it while you're scared.
Do it while you're nervous. Do it while you're anxious.
Because it's like you're gonna feel so much better when you
just express. Then hold back.
(22:42):
Suppression leads to depression. So instead of suppression, let's
do the opposite of that, which is expression.
Expressing yourself, expressing your art, expressing your words.
This is my slam poetry for you guys for the day.
I love you so much. You're inherently worthy.
