After a lightning strike, American private investigator James Frost begins to hear people’s "inner song" and switches careers, tailoring ballads for clients with relationship woes. On a chance encounter with Zarah Chandio, a Pakistani children’s book author, her "song" causes him to lose his gift. But because when she is nearby his gift returns, he hires her as a silent partner. He gets more than he bargained for, though, as she has a tic for blurting out clients’ love dilemmas in the form of children's fables.

While helping James’ new teenage client Lance, Zarah interrupts and improves on the song, shifting the balance of power in their friendship.
James plans to save his career by partnering with Zarah, which entailing her accompany him to client interviews.
Struck by lightning, James transforms from P.I. to song detective. We meet new client Martin, a nebbish recently dumped by his clairvoyant girlfriend Sunniva.
Martin, dubious of James’ interviewing tactics, insists on collaborating. James strikes a compromise and provides Martin with an inside look at his writing process.
