Dan Savage is a sex advice columnist, podcaster, and author. Most likely he’s inadvertently or deliberately influenced the way you think about sex and relationships. Dan’s sex-advice column, Savage Love, first appeared in The Stranger, Seattle’s alternative weekly in 1991. Today it is syndicated worldwide. In 2006, Dan launched the Savage Lovecast, a weekly, call-in, sex advice podcast.
In Savage fashion, we start the conversation by answering listener questions (3:28), then we discuss how being gay prepared him for the job of a sex advice columnist (11:54), why he joined a catholic seminary school (16:03), and how his parents reacted when he first came out (17:41). We then discuss what the 80s were like for him as a newly out gay man (25:29), how he came up with the idea for Savage Love (27:43), and go over some of the best pieces of his advice – fuck first (31:07) and GGG (33:34).
After Dan walks us through how he met his husband (38:22), why they finally decided to get married (41:17), and how their relationship has evolved three decades later (44:01). To finish, Dan reads an excerpt about his mother from American Savage (50:39) and I ask him the pivotal question – what does slut mean to him (56:31).
