Speaker 2 (00:36):
Today's episode is
all about failure.
I know I've had some peoplemessage me and be like what's
going on?
How's your podcast going?
I haven't seen much from you.
I had to take me a little break.
I was absolutely exhausted andI was feeling some failure.
(00:56):
My goal with smart, wealthystylist is to always be
transparent with you and sharewith you how I work through my
struggles and how to handle themin yours as well.
So this week, obviously, sinceI'm coming back and getting back
in the groove of things, Iwanted to cover this because it
(01:20):
is such a crazy thing to have todeal with.
So you know a failure.
There's been songs wrote aboutit, books, speakers give key
notes on it.
But no matter how much youlisten to people talk about
failure, you're never fullyprepared on how to handle it
until it looks you right in theface.
(01:40):
And sometimes life is so hardand sometimes it's because we
make it that way.
And, like I said, I recentlyhad my own fair share of failure
and it knocked me back a fewsteps.
But I'm still here and I'm notgoing anywhere and I'm actually
really excited to get into thisepisode because I think so many
(02:02):
of us deal with failure, whetherit's in our personal life or
business life.
However, you're dealing withfailure.
We all have dealt with it atsome point and if you haven't
yet, you probably will.
Not that I'm speaking that overyour life, but sometimes that
happens.
So just to give you a littlebackstory what has been going on
(02:24):
, you know, for the last, reallysince January it was the last
six, seven months I have beengetting up at four o'clock in
the morning.
I do my podcast stuff, I do, youknow, work on my business, and
then I work out with Power Fitand then start my day.
And whenever I started and downthis whole journey, I was like,
(02:50):
okay, I'm going to get out ofdebt, I'm going to get in shape,
I'm going to do all thesethings all at once, because
that's just how I roll A lot oftimes.
I dive all in and then I try tohurry up and get it done.
What I'm learning with thisseason in my life and these
goals that I'm trying to get tois that, you know, I really
think God's trying to work on mypatience with me, because I'm
(03:15):
not a patient person and when Iset my sights on something, I
want it now.
I think so many of us are thatway and it's hard, it's really
really hard to have any sort ofpatience.
And so I I did a release of oneof my courses and I did not win
(03:41):
the six month challenge throughPower Fit, which is totally fine
.
There was some amazing womenwho won, but, you know, I was
just really hoping I would, andI know that sounds so petty and
childish, but I was like youknow, if I win this, this will
wipe out all of my debt and thenI can fast track all my other
plans that I'm trying toaccomplish.
And so disappointment reallydid get ahold of me and I really
(04:06):
, I really thought that I wasgoing to win, you know, and that
I was going to fast track mydebt payoff and that I wasn't
going to have to be as patient.
I just wanted to like, I justwant to get there.
Like when you're on trying todo a debt free journey, the road
(04:28):
is long and it's uncomfortableand I'm just over it, but I know
what my plan is.
I have my goals written downand I have a why.
So with my fitness journey andwith my debt payoff stuff, I
have a very strong why's.
(04:49):
So I'm not giving up.
I'm not going to see thesefailures as something that's
going to stop me.
I just went through kind of aseries of things and I'm going
to share those with you on how Ihandled the failure, whether it
(05:09):
be on my own part, you know, orit just didn't work out right.
So, but most of the time whenyou fail, it's on you.
You know, like, yes, I couldhave done more on my fitness
journey to win this fitnesschallenge.
I could have, you know, ate awhole lot cleaner, upped my
weights, got a gym membership.
(05:30):
You know, whatever I needed tohave done, I could have done
that, but I didn't, and so thatresulted in failure.
It's really hard to own up toyour own failure.
Sometimes it's a whole loteasier to blame it on the power
that bees, or you know God'splan, or you know, well, that
(05:51):
was someone else's fault, well,it was rigged, well, blah, blah,
blah.
Like whatever you think, youknow you can talk yourself out
of it all day that it wasn'tyour problem, right.
But the first step to movingforward is, with anything like
with an addiction or any otherproblem that you're facing, is
recognizing what you had in thestakes.
(06:15):
What was it that you did thatcreated this end result.
So, by recognizing the thingsthat I could have done
differently to produce adifferent outcome is the very
first step to dealing withfailure is recognizing your part
(06:35):
in that, recognizing what youcould have done differently and
adjusting your plan.
So, like I said, that's thefirst step recognize what you
could have done differently.
And you know, with my fitnessjourney, like I said, I probably
should have got a gymmembership to up my weights and
I should have ate a littlecleaner, because I would eat
(06:57):
clean most of the time but notall the time.
And when you're in a fitnesschallenge, like whether it be
six months or a year, that'sstill like a really short amount
of time.
When you look at the grandscheme of things and you look at
how long your life lasts, likeit's pretty short.
But the cool thing is that, yes, I failed, but I learned so
(07:19):
much along the way and I amreally proud of myself for
making it six months.
I didn't give up, I kept goingand it was a really, really
great feeling and it was provingit to myself that I can do it.
No, I didn't win, but I learnedso many valuable, great things
(07:41):
through that six month time spanand then on the smart with the
set dial is side of things.
I created an online course.
Well, it's actually a workbook,but it's available online and
they there is an online versionas well, like an online PDF book
.
I launched it and it wascrickets.
I mean, I haven't had any salesoff of it and it was one of
(08:05):
those things that I'm like.
I literally have put in so manyhours, so much work, so much
time and not one person hasbought this course and that was
all.
Of this happened literallywithin one week of each other,
like it was.
I've been grinding it out and Iwas trying to get all this stuff
out right when the challengewon, so that everything was in
(08:28):
place and all these things wouldhappen all at once and nothing
happened on either side.
So it felt like I had justmajorly bombed, that I had
wasted all of this time, and I'msure there are seasons in your
life where you feel like, oh mygosh, I've done all of this for
(08:48):
nothing.
Or you know, I've worked sohard for so long for nothing to
come of this.
But I wanna encourage youbecause it's not all for nothing
, even though I haven't sold asingle course.
I know how to make onlinecourses, I know how to figure
(09:09):
out course topics and marketresearch and I know how to
create things.
There's so many lessons thatI've learned how I've learned to
use several different programsand in creation and course
creation, you know, I've learnedhow to do this podcast.
I've been able to help otherfriends also.
(09:31):
I have had tons of people reachout to me that have found the
podcast, that have said becauseof you, I'm not throwing in the
towel, you know, and it's sopowerful to me and so special to
me to hear from people thatSmartWatheyStyles has changed
their lives.
No, they're not buying mycourse, that's okay.
(09:52):
I need to do some differentthings and I did get some
feedback from some of my friendsand some colleagues and people
that I trust.
You know, like work mentors, that I trust their opinion and
there's definitely someadjustments that I should make
or that I am going to make, butonce again, it pushes me to
(10:15):
learn a new skill so and investmore money into this.
So there's nothing wrong withthat and I'm just gonna leave
this course up there and peoplecan purchase the workbooks if
they want them until I'm readyfor the next step, and so I'm
just gonna continue to stay thecourse and I felt that failure
(10:36):
and it was real and it was hardand it caused me to pause, for
really, I guess this is.
I was really ready to start lastweek but it just the weekend at
being crazy.
So I really took off a solidmonth to just sit back, reflect,
figure out what's going on inmy head, how I'm feeling, you
(10:59):
know, recheck my why.
Why am I doing this?
Where do I need to pivot, youknow.
And so it's really important tolisten to yourself whenever
you're going through thesethings, to work through them.
So the second thing is is, ifyou need a break, take it.
My break was amazing.
It was a great time ofself-reflection and it really
(11:23):
allowed me to kind of open up mymental space again and remember
my why.
Of course and you know I alwaystalk about your why and how
important it is to have a strongwhy.
This is why, whenever you hitroadblocks and hardships,
difficulties, you know whenyou're swimming against the
(11:44):
current in your business or inyour situation.
This is why you need a strongwhy.
Why are you doing this?
The strong why is why I keeppushing through and why, when I
get to the other side, I'll belike I am so glad that I had a
plan and a dream and a why tosay, okay, this is why I'm doing
(12:07):
this and I'm going to continueto do this until I complete it
and see this through.
And so that leads to the nextone.
Re-evaluate your goals and startagain.
So, after you've taken yourbreak, you know, go back to the
basics, look at your goals.
What was your goal in the firstplace?
(12:28):
Was it to create an onlinecourse?
Is it to move into a new salon?
Is it to raise your prices?
Is it to, you know, open yourown place?
Is it to up your amenities thatyou offer for your clients?
Whatever it is that you arewanting to do, if you feel like
you're failing, go back to yourgoals and look at them and go
(12:52):
okay, so I'm not too far off,I'm not failing as bad as I
think I am.
Or you know, if it's with yourfinances, go back and you know,
look at, make sure you'rekeeping track on your budget
tracker and your expensetrackers.
And you know, make sure thatyou're staying vigilant in your
part, doing your part, and then,if you fail, it's okay, regroup
(13:18):
and step right back in.
The next one is stop negativeself-talk and self-thinking.
I'm not sure where I heard this, but it's for my childhood and
I remember hearing stop yourstinking thinking.
And I love that saying becauseit is so true that when you talk
(13:40):
negatively to yourself, youstart believing negatively about
yourself.
So, even if you're failing, even if you're struggling,
stopping the negative self-talkand self-thinking can bring a
great deal of happiness backinto your life and help you get
through difficult seasons.
(14:02):
My friend and I I was doing herhair and she was talking, and
you know she was talking abouther and her aunt and their
health struggles.
And just you know how hard itis when you know you diet and
you do really well for, like youknow, three, four, five months
(14:22):
and then all of a sudden youfall off the wagon, you eat all
of the weight back, plus 10, youknow and you're just like what
is wrong with me?
Why?
Why do I do this?
And her aunt said somethingabout how they had some family
mental health issues and she'slike do you think that I'm
(14:48):
bipolar?
Because my mom had this and youknow she would do this.
And you know, one of thecharacteristics is that you know
, you do this, this and this.
And she started thinking allthese negative thoughts about
herself and thinking like, oh mygosh, I have this problem.
This is why I can't stick withanything.
It's these compulsive thoughts.
(15:09):
And da, da, da, da, you know.
And she started really thinkinglike, oh, I have a problem, you
know.
And then my friend was like Ithink I have that too, because I
do the same thing.
And when she was talking to meI said, hey, literally everyone
does that.
You are human, you don't havebipolar disorder, neither does
(15:32):
your aunt.
You know like I know both ofthese ladies very well.
There is no bipolar going on.
I mean, they're very, very, youknow not, they're not bipolar.
And it was one of those thingslike negativity can take root in
your life.
So quickly we can negative talkourselves into a really bad
(15:55):
position or into something thatwe don't even own.
Really quickly we could all belike, oh my gosh, I have all
these characteristics.
Do I have?
You know this, xyz right?
Negative thinking and negativeself-talk can spin you into a
(16:16):
downward spiral.
Now, I am not dismissing mentalhealth issues.
I am not saying if you havebipolar, you are any less than
someone who does not havebipolar.
I just wanna make that clear.
All I'm saying is these twowomen were about to talk
themselves into thinking thatthey had bipolar disorder
because they can't stick with aworkout program.
(16:36):
That is not the truth, though.
The truth was that we are allhuman and we all struggle from
time to time, and sometimesyou're gonna fall off the wagon.
You're going to fail.
When you do, what sets youapart from the others is that
you can pick yourself back upand decide that you're not going
(16:59):
to continue to fail, that youare going to look at your why
and your goals and say, okay, these are my goals, I am going
to stick with them.
Let's regroup, take a break andget right back into it.
That whole dedication overmotivation thing, right?
So all I'm saying is that bythinking positively about
(17:20):
yourself, talking positively toyourself and stopping your
stinking thinking can make amaster or majorly big difference
in your life when it comes totackling those goals that you
have or those dreams that youhave.
Stop your stinking thinking andturn it around.
(17:43):
The next one is refocus andremind yourself of your why, but
I already touched on that, sowe don't need to go over that
again.
Just focus on your why.
And then the last one is tostay true to yourself and your
vision.
It's really easy in today'ssociety to get distracted, and
(18:04):
just scrolling through Instagramcan bring up a whole lot of
things that you think you shouldprobably change in your
business or in your life, or inyour marriage or in your fitness
journey or whatever.
Having a strong why, writingyour goals down and making sure
that your vision is clear.
You know what you want toaccomplish and why you want to
(18:27):
accomplish it, regardless ofwhat anyone else is doing out
there Sometimes.
If you need to delete socialmedia, if you need to distance
yourself from certain people inyour life, if you need to get
off Facebook, if you need tostop listening to certain
podcasts, if you, whatever it isthat you need to do to silence
(18:53):
that confusion, do it.
Whenever you have a dream, agoal and a vision, staying true
to your dream, your goal andyour vision is of utmost
importance, because as soon asyou start looking around, you're
going to think that you'redoing something wrong, or that
(19:13):
you want to change your goal, orthat how you're going about
reaching your goal isn't theright way, and that couldn't be
further from the truth.
You need to stay true to yourvision and your goal and when
you fail, pick yourself back up,reevaluate and then, if you
need to change something at thatpoint because of failure, do it
(19:37):
.
You can always pivot, but justmake sure you're not pivoting
because so and so is, or makesure you're not pivoting because
it looks better doing it thisway, right, I want you to make
sure that you are staying trueto yourself.
Failure is difficult and it isuncomfortable, and sometimes you
(20:01):
do need to pivot.
So, like with the smart, wealthystylist stuff, you know, when I
was doing my market research, like I kind of picked something
that when I was doing my marketresearch I knew that I was
picking a topic that probablywouldn't sell well, and that's
because hairstylists don't careabout finances.
(20:22):
There are very few of them.
There's literally 5% ofstylists who know their numbers.
So by niching down, I thought, okay, I'll niche down on
hairstylists, I will show themwhat I'm doing, how I'm getting
out of debt, and then I willhelp them do the same.
You know, I'll help them raisetheir prices you know, set
(20:42):
prices on facts, not on emotionsand help them elevate their
businesses and do all thesethings Well.
I picked an industry that mosthairstylists don't care.
They don't care anything aboutthat, they just wanna show up to
work.
They don't, you know, andthat's okay.
I'm here for the ones who wantto elevate themselves, elevate
(21:05):
their businesses and moveforward.
So I knew that going in that itwouldn't be, you know, a
massive smash hit and I'd havemillions of people trying to buy
my course because it'suncomfortable, it's not a fun
course, it's talking about, youknow, money, getting out of debt
, numbers like it's notnecessarily a good time unless
(21:26):
you're into that stuff.
So, but I'm still going to staytrue to my vision because I
realize that there's a massiveneed for that.
Whether hairstylists want toadmit that or not, most of them
don't know their numbers, theydon't know the business side of
things, they don't want to dealwith their pricing, they don't
(21:46):
want to deal with getting awebsite or a business Instagram
account, and but when they do,I'm here and I'm going to
continue to stay true to myvision and my mission in helping
hairstylists elevate themselvesand their businesses, and
really any small business thatlistens to this podcast can also
(22:07):
benefit from this.
So if you are facing failuretoday, I hope that this has been
encouraging to you to know thatother people are failing too,
and it's okay.
If you fail, you just have toremember your why, readjust and
continue on, and I believe inyou and I know that you are
(22:32):
going to crush your goalseventually.
Sometimes it's painful, sometimes it takes a long time,
but that's okay.
Don't get distracted by theworld and everything that they
have to offer.
Stay true to yourself and keeppushing through until you reach
the other side.
I believe in you and I willtalk to you guys next week.
Speaker 1 (22:53):
