my name is Tom and i'm your host. A new
(00:47):
friend that we haven't heard before is here to read
our story. Her name is Kristen, and I'm sure all
of you will give her a warm welcome. She has
a lovely story about a girl named Ava who has
a fun playdate with a dinosaur. But dinosaurs aren't actually
(01:10):
around anymore, so I wonder is Ava's playdate real or
just a dream. Why don't you listen closely and see
if you can find out. Then let me know what
you think. To prepare our imaginations for this magical adventure,
(01:33):
let's get nice and comfortable wherever you're listening from, and
to help you picture everything in our story, it might
be best to close your eyes. Once you're all set,
(01:54):
I'll hand over to Kristen, we're about to join Ava, who,
perhaps like to you, is snuggling up in her very
own bed.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Our story begins on a lovely, warm night when a
little girl named Ava had just settled into her cozy bed.
Her window was open and the curtain was moving a
little bit from a breeze outside. Ava was cuddled in
(02:45):
under her soft comforter, which had pictures of dinosaurs all
over it. Ava loved dinosaurs. She knew all the types, names,
and what they looked like. In fact, tonight before bed
(03:08):
daddy had read her a book about dinosaurs as her
bedtime story. Eva snuggled in and hugged her dinosaur stuffed animal,
which she'd gotten for her birthday. She pulled this soft
comforter around her shoulders. Her eyes closed, and her mind
(03:34):
was just drifting off into sleep. Then she heard a
soft sound at her window. She looked over and saw
the face of a young dinosaur peeking in around the curtain.
It looked like a small a patosaurus, well small for
(04:00):
a dinosaur anyway, which of course is not small at
all compared to people. But for an a padosaurus it
was quite small. It must be no more than a baby.
She thought, via Padosaurus was smiling at her. Then it
(04:26):
opened its dinosaur mouth and said, will you come and
play with me? Well, of course Eva would go and
play with the baby dinosaur. She got out of bed
and walked over to the window. The little a Padosaurus
(04:47):
moved out of the way so that she could climb
over the windowsill. You can ride on my back, offered
the baby dinosaur in his life little rumbling voice. So
Ava slid off the window sill and onto his back.
(05:11):
It was smooth and cool and a little bit soft.
She grasped the dinosaur's neck and he carried her away
from the house. He lumbered along, and Ava felt his
body rolling a little side to side. Up ahead, she
(05:35):
saw a grassy field that she'd never noticed before. It
was filled with long green grass, and tall trees grew
around the sides. Even though it was nighttime, Ava could
(05:55):
see perfectly. The sky was a beautiful dark blue, and
the field was filled with moonlight, almost as bright as day.
The little apatosaurus waddled over towards the grassy field, his
body swaying back and forth. When he reached the field,
(06:23):
he sat down so that Ava could easily slide backwards
off his back. It was fun sledding down his back,
like going down a slide at the playground. Ava walked
around to look at her new friend. He was smiling
(06:46):
a dinosaur smile, and she smiled back at him. Then
asked him what he would like to play. The dinosaur
smiled even bigger and suggested playing hide and seek, which
just so happened to be Ava's favorite game, so of
(07:11):
course she said yes. They decided that the dinosaur would
hide first. Ava closed her eyes and put her hands
over her face. She counted slowly while the dinosaur went
off to find a hiding place. One, two, three, four, five,
(07:45):
six seven. She counted up as high as she could,
and then she gave the warning ready or not, here
I come. She looked around. She saw the long grass
(08:06):
of the field, which was waving softly as the night
breeze blew gently across it. She looked up at the
dark blue sky where stars trailed around like fairy lights.
(08:28):
Then she looked towards the tall trees that grew around
the sides of the grassy field, and there she saw
a big dinosaur body in between the tree trunks. Her
new friend's head was behind one tree, and his body
(08:53):
was partly hidden by several other trees, but she could
clearly see his back and tail in the spaces between
the trees. Poor silly dinosaur, he was too big to hide.
(09:13):
Ava smiled to herself. She would pretend to look for
him for a few minutes before she went to his
hiding place. That way, he wouldn't feel bad and would
have fun too. So she walked around the field, looking
(09:34):
among the grass and peeking behind trees. Then, after a while,
she walked slowly over towards her big friend, wondering out
loud where he could be. Once she got very near
(09:56):
to the trees that the dinosaur was standing behind, she
heard a rustling sound. She realized it was her friend,
shaking with quiet laughter as she got closer and closer.
That made Ava start to laugh too, but she managed
(10:20):
to swallow down her giggles As she crept up on
the dinosaur. She went right up between the trees and
pretended to bump bright into the big creature's body. They
both burst out laughing then and fell down in a heap,
(10:44):
giggling and rolling on the soft grass. When they finally
stopped laughing, they lay there together for another moment, catching
their breath. Their breathing slowed down as they lay on
the soft ground, staring up at the deep blue sky
(11:10):
and the trailing lights of the stars. There were so
very many stars that they could see. The bright stars
made patterns across the sky that Ava thought looked like
the footprints of some tiny nighttime animal that had walked
(11:31):
across a deep blue field. She told her friend that idea,
and they talked about it for a while, imagining a
sky animal that would leave glowing footprints across the night.
Then at last they remembered their game, and so they
(11:54):
both got up slowly to their feet. This time, the
dinosaur would count while Ava hid. One, two, three. The
dinosaur's rumbling voice counted As Ava hurried off, She walked
(12:18):
quietly around the edge of the field to the far side.
Then she lay down on her belly and crept into
the tall, waving grass. She got into a comfortable position
and lay her head on her arms. She lay still
(12:41):
so that the dinosaur wouldn't see the grass moving and
realize where she was hidden. She heard her friend stop
counting and begin his search. Stomp, stomp, stop, Up went
his big dinosaur feet. Swish swish, swish, came the sound
(13:11):
of his big dinosaur tail through the grass. The apatosaurus
looked for her here, and he looked for her there.
He peeked behind the trees and looked up in their branches,
and then at last he began to search the grassy
(13:35):
field itself. Swish, he went through the grassy field one way, swish,
he went through it the other way, until he headed
straight for where Ava was hiding there in her cozy
(13:56):
spot on the far edge of the field. When he
got so close that she could hear him breathing, the
dinosaur stopped. Ava turned her head ever so slightly and
peeked at him out of one eye, and there was
(14:20):
the dinosaur's big friendly face. His big friendly eyes were
staring straight into hers from so close that she could
have reached out and touched him. Well. That made them
(14:41):
both start laughing all over again, so they gave up
on their game for the time being and lay back
again on the soft ground. The night was warm, and
the grass around them felt like a comfort terrible blanket.
(15:02):
They looked up at the starry sky again and they
began to talk about all sorts of things. Ava told
the dinosaur her secret thoughts and he told her his
She realized she could tell this friend her most secret
(15:25):
feelings and he would understand. It was a wonderful thing
telling her thoughts and feelings to someone who understood and
cared about her. So they talked and talked, Ava and
(15:46):
her friendly dinosaur deep into the night, and in and
out of dreams and across into mourning, And from that
day onwards, Eva always knew that if anything was bothering her,
(16:07):
or anything had made her sad or worried, if anything
at all was on her mind, or even if she
just had a special secret to share, she could always
whisper her feelings into the night and her friend, the dinosaur,
(16:28):
would hear them wherever he was, and she would feel
better and comforted, and then she would be able to
drift off into a wonderful, peaceful sleep. Became the stammh
