(00:28):
it's Tom here, and I'm so glad you've joined me
for story time. This is my favorite part of the
day and I hope you love it just as much
as I do. Heather is about to read us an
amazing story about a boy who learns that he can
go on dreamy adventures or with the power of his

(00:53):
own mind. Our minds and imaginations are more powerful, and
we tend to realize even the fact that we can
listen along to a story and picture each scene in
our own unique way is pretty incredible when you think

(01:13):
about it. So let's prepare to do just that by
warming up our imaginations. You might like to close your
eyes and then picture yourself flying on a cloud. Imagine

(01:37):
the blue sky and the fluffy white clouds all around you,
feel the cool sky air and the soft cloud supporting
your body. Now take a nice, big breath of that

(01:59):
cool sky air and gently blow it out very good,
and now let's turn to our story. Which starts in
a quaint little town.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
Once there was a boy who lived with his family
in a place that might not be so very different
from where you live. He probably looked more like you
than unlike you, and my guess is that you probably

(02:57):
like some of the very same things that he enjoyed.
His name was Emilio, and in most ways he was
very much like other children. But of course everyone is

(03:20):
different in some way. After all, most everyone feels different
from other people at times, and sometimes that is a
lonely feeling. But the things that make us different can

(03:43):
also be what makes us special. And as we grow
up sometimes we realize that whatever made us feel most
different and me Bobe sometimes a little lonely, is actually

(04:06):
our superpower. And that is how it was with Emilio.
As I said, he was very much like other children
in school or in his neighborhood. But sometimes, when he

(04:29):
was supposed to be listening, his mind flew up and
away and went into the clouds far off where I
couldn't hear a thing. That's when his mother or his auntie,

(04:51):
or his teacher or the daycare lady or whatever grown
up was in charge at the moment and would get
a little frustrated with him. Weren't you listening? They would say,
I just told you not to do that, I told

(05:16):
you to do this. You need to pay more attention,
and so it went. What they didn't know and couldn't understand,
was that Emilia wasn't trying not to listen, He wasn't

(05:39):
trying not to pay attention, and he certainly wasn't trying
to make them that. His mind was just far away,
up in the clouds, traveling to weigh off places that

(06:00):
none of them could see. This got Emilio into some trouble,
as you can imagine, and sometimes it made him feel
bad or sad or lonely. But every day it's a

(06:22):
chance for us to learn something new, and sometimes, if
we try hard to notice, it can even be a
chance to learn something new about ourselves. Those are the

(06:44):
most special days. And one day a chance like that
came for Emilio. Here's how it happened. He was in
his kindergarten class. He was on the carpet with all

(07:06):
the other children, But before he knew it, his mind
had traveled up, up, up, and away. It soared into
a pale blue sky where fluffy white clouds drifted like

(07:32):
cotton candy bleached white in the sun. Emiliu's mind carried
him through the sky, whizzing along with a whooshing that
felt like the wind you make when you ride a

(07:52):
tricycle or bicycle really fast, and his mind settled him
into a big cloud that felt as soft as a
blanket and as cozy as a hug. And then it

(08:14):
began whizzing along again, taking the cloud with it. Using
his mind, Emilio turned to the cloud and dipped it
so that it flew down towards the earth below. Then

(08:36):
he lifted the cloud and flew up again above all
the other clouds, so that he could look down on
them all drifting under him. And that's when he had
an idea. Maybe he could take his cloud and go

(09:01):
somewhere he wanted to go. First, he tried flying his
cloud to a beach he had seen in a picture
one time. He flew the cloud along pretty fast, so
that the whizzing wind would blow his hair back from

(09:24):
his face, and that felt wonderful. He flew and he looked,
and soon he saw the beautiful beach coming into view.
It had white sand and turquoise colored water, and it

(09:50):
was so pretty that he slowed the cloud almost to
a stop and just looked at it for a long time.
As he watched, floating on his cloud and gazing down,
he saw waves splashing on the beach, and he heard

(10:14):
the sound they made against the sand. He saw a
fish jumping splash, and then along came a group of
dolphins leaping in big arcs over the water. When they landed,

(10:38):
the turquoise water sprayed up in a big splash of
bubbles and foam. After watching the beautiful beach for a
long time from his comfortable perch on the cloud, Emilio

(10:58):
had another idea. He thought of his grandmother, who had
lived very far away, who he hadn't seen in a
very long time. Maybe he could fly his cloud to

(11:22):
wherever she was, he thought. So he waved goodbye to
the dolphins in the beautiful beach, and then he concentrated hard.
He turned his cloud and sped it up again, enjoying

(11:46):
the feeling of moving fast through the cool air. He
flew and flew on his big, soft cloud until at
last his grandmother's tiny cottage came into view. He remembered

(12:11):
what it was like, painted blue with a pot of
red flowers by the front door. Seeing the cottage, Emilio
turned his cloud and flew downwards, down, down, down, he

(12:35):
flew until he hovered just in front of the door
to the tiny blue cottage. The little cottage seemed to
glow with all his happy memories of his grandmother, remembering

(12:58):
her warm hug and the way she never got angry
when his attention would wander. Emilio reached out with his
mind and opened the cottage door. Inside was his grandmother

(13:20):
smiling at him. She welcomed him and wrapped him into
a hug so big that it felt like the whole world.
He lay his head against her soft shoulder and let

(13:42):
her stroke his hair with her soft hands. He stayed
like that, hugging his grandmother and letting her hug him back,
just feeling their love wrapping around both of them like

(14:04):
sunshine filling a warm day. The two of them were
still and quiet, listening to each other's breathing for a
long time, and then Emilio stepped back and held out

(14:27):
his hand, inviting his grandmother onto his big cloud with him.
It was plenty big enough for two. She stepped on
and then sat down, settling in comfortably. Next to him

(14:50):
on the fluffy white cloud, Emilio zumed the cloud up
and into the pale blue sky. He flew the cloud
in and out, zigging and sagging skillfully between all the

(15:13):
other clouds drifting around them. His grandmother watched him with
a smile, and he could tell she was impressed at
his flying. They flew on together for a long time,

(15:37):
just enjoying the feeling of the wind and the soft cloud,
and the sight of the wide blue sky and the
quiet peacefulness way up there, high above the busy world. Finally,

(16:06):
after a long time, Emilio knew it was time to
say goodbye to his grandmother, at least for now, so
he flew her gently back down to her tiny cottage,

(16:28):
still glowing with its happy memories, and then he flew
off again, waving happily until she disappeared from view. And then,

(16:48):
feeling full of joy and very peaceful, Emilio let the
cloud go. He watched it drift off to rejoin all
the other fluffy clouds in the pale blue sky. Then

(17:13):
he let his mind fall slowly back to earth, and slowly,
slowly returned to his classroom, where the other children were
listening patiently that was the day when Emilia realized that

(17:40):
it wasn't all bad that his mind sometimes flew up
and away into the clouds. It was also a superpower.
It was again theft that he could learn to use.

(18:06):
He could work on teaching his mind to stay where
he was when that was important to do, and with
practice he would get better at it. But when he
needed to get away, or to visit a safe or

(18:29):
special place or special memory, he could use his gift.
He could let his mind carry him off and away,
to fly off on a cloud far away where he

(18:51):
could find quiet or stillness or peace or love or
warmth or safety or whatever he needed. And when he

(19:12):
was done, he could bring those things back with him
to Earth, to his regular life, where he was quite
like the other children, except a little different. And that

(19:36):
was just as it should be. W. M.
