(00:28):
joining me again. I'm Tom, and I'm so happy you're
here for story time. We cherish having your company each
and every time you tune in. My friend Nadine is
here to read to us today. In this story, we
get to imagine what it's like to be a wiggly

(00:50):
little caterpillar, experiencing all the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and
sensations of these tiny creatures. What a treat. I can't
wait to listen, and remember, you're welcome to drift off

(01:10):
to sleep while you listen along. We'll experience it all
in our imaginations, of course, So get yourself comfortable and
snug in your bed or wherever you're listening from. Wrap
yourself in your blankets like a caterpillar in its cocoon.

(01:36):
Maybe you'd like to join me in closing our eyes,
and when you're ready, allow your imagination to open up.
As we begin our story.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Imagine you are slowly opening your eyes in your dream world,
like you are waking up from a lovely long nap.
Your vision is blurred and unfocused as you wipe the
sleep from your eyes, but you can begin to make

(02:29):
out the bright sun and vivid shades of green and
yellow surrounding you. On all sides. Spots of pale blue
peak through gaps in the smudges of green, the blue

(02:50):
sky backdrop, which you only ever see on such a
beautiful summer's day. Feeling a little foggy and confused after
your nap, you want to understand exactly where you are,
so you look ahead. A long, twisted and knotty path

(03:16):
stretches in front of you, leading into an explosion of
greenery and foliage. Your little hands come up to rub
your eyes so you can clear your sleepy head and
see clearly what is in front of you. You gasp

(03:39):
in astonishment as you realize that the long path you
are on is in fact a twig, a twig from
a tree similar to those you have seen many times
before in your garden or in your A twig which

(04:04):
would usually seem tiny and unremarkable to you, But now,
right here, in this very moment, you see the twig
in a whole new way, as though you have telescopic
eyes that make every detail seem bigger, brighter, and more interesting.

(04:32):
What could be happening here? You look around in amazement
at all of the many wonderful sights around you. There
are stunning leaves and foliage of an old oak tree.
The leafs surrounding you are huge, bigger than umbrellas, and

(04:59):
you can see thousands of tiny lines on them in
intricate patterns like veins. You notice droplets of water shimmering
on the surface of the leaves. Perhaps they have always

(05:19):
been here, but it's only here, up close, that you
can see them. The giant green leaves flutter playfully as
a gentle breeze sweeps through them, blowing a few off
and away into the field beyond. Acorns hang down in

(05:43):
clumps from leaves, their beautiful brown skin shining in the sun.
They look just like drops of chocolate. A few fall
from the branch with another gust of wind and to
the ground with a bomb. Following the descent of the

(06:05):
acorn towards the ground, you realize you are very high up. Indeed,
it is almost as though you are up in the clouds.

Speaker 1 (06:18):
How did you.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
Get up here, you see birds darting and dancing between
the branches right alongside you. They're green and yellow bodies,
soaring swiftly through the air and the leaves of the tree.
They are so graceful and speedy, like acrobats of the wind.

(06:46):
The birds appear to be brother and sister. You recognize
this from the way they tweetweek and mischievously chase one another.
They do not know tissue, and carry on with their
game until they are little dots on the horizon. You

(07:07):
smile at the skill and joy that these little creatures exhibit.
As you turn toward another branch of this tree, you
notice more scurrying and chirping sounds around you. What could
this be? One closer inspection, you notice squirrels running down

(07:34):
the tree trunk in a rapid gray and red flash
of fluff, their bushy tails flying behind them. You watch
the scurrying squirrels at work and realize they are quickly
gathering up the acorns before scuttling back up the large

(07:56):
old tree to store them away for their dinner. You
hear them chatter and scurry playfully, and smile to yourself
as they remind you of little children. Maybe they are
brothers and sisters, just like the birds. Amongst the grass

(08:21):
surrounding the tree way down below are bursts of color,
all the colors of the rainbow. These colors are made
up with beautiful wildflowers popping their heads up from the
tall countryside grass, adding splashes of purple, red, orange, yellow,

(08:49):
and blue to the blanket of green surrounding them. Cute
little daisies and baby buttercups around, proud red poppies, and
tall purple foxgloves tower above them, all like guardians standing watch.

(09:12):
How perfect you think to yourself before exploring further. The
wind whistles a summary song as it rustles the tall
grass and plants, picking up the scents from each flower
and carrying it on the breeze up to where you

(09:34):
are in the tree. You can smell pretty flowery smells,
some strong and some delicate. You can see fuzzy bumblebees
journeying from flower to flower like the postman, collecting deliveries

(09:56):
of pollen from each flower to take away to their hive.
Their low humming buzz joins in the winds summary tune,
and you breathe in deeply as you take in the
fresh air, happy to be enjoying the moment. Everything you

(10:20):
see before you is so familiar, sights which you have
seen many many times before. Still something seems quite different. Hmm,
what could this be? You wonder. As you're pondering this question,

(10:45):
mister B decides he has collected enough for his hive
and begins to fly up, up and up towards you
to catch a breeze which will help him to journey
home faster. As he gets closer, you realize he is
getting bigger and bigger. He is the same size as you. Now,

(11:13):
wondering what is going on, you look down at yourself.
Mister B wasn't getting bigger at all. He was the
same size as you the whole time, because you are,
in fact a caterpillar, a beautiful, long bodied green caterpillar,

(11:39):
living amongst the nature and all its fellow creatures in
the most personal and closest way you could imagine. How
funny you think looking at your plump body and your
six stumpy little legs. You are pea green with cool

(12:03):
yellow and black stripes, just like the bumblebee. You raise
a hand to wave as mister B buzzes off at
top speed to join his family and make delicious sticky
honey together. Wanting to know more about your new form,

(12:24):
you reach up and around your own body to investigate.
You feel too long antennae on the top of your head.
You have two huge eyes to help you see, but
your ears aren't on the side of your head anymore.

(12:45):
But of course, this is exactly the way a caterpillar
should be. You want to explore your surroundings in your
brand new body. Slowly, take it one step at a time.
You start to walk towards a cluster of leaves. Naturally,

(13:08):
your six legs follow each other in succession, and you
ripple along the branch with ease. It tickles your sides
in a way you weren't expecting. You giggle with every
movement and carry on chuckling away. As you continue on

(13:29):
your caterpillar journey, reaching the enormous leaves which flutter and
dance along the branch, you realize you have become quite
peckish with all the giggling and tickling and wiggling you
just did. In fact, you have suddenly become very hungry.

(13:54):
But what are you supposed to eat? What do caterpillars eat? Hmm?
You look up at the big leaf in front of you,
and it suddenly looks so delicious. Maybe that will taste good,

(14:14):
you think. You creep up to the nearest and most
delicious looking leaf, sit down on it, and take a
big caterpillar bite out of it. You cannot believe how
good it tastes. It's so crunchy and juicy, fresh and sweet,

(14:40):
like a lovely salad made especially for a bug. You
munch and munch until you've completely scoffed a whole leaf
to yourself. Yum Full and satisfied, you crawl back to

(15:01):
the branch. You wonder, hmm, what you could eat for dessert.
You really are going to look like a big, fluffy
marshmallow soon with this appetite, you remember the acorns that
looked as sweet and shiny as chocolate. Overcome by a

(15:24):
greedy pudding tummy and curiosity, you wiggle to an acorn
and stick out your little caterpillar tongue. You give it
a lick. What does it taste like? It doesn't taste
like chocolate at all, and it's too hard to munch.

(15:46):
Oh well, maybe it's better not to be greedy. You
decide to wait for something else sweet and tasty to
come along and catch your attention. You realize that as
you are now a wild creature, the things your body
needs and wants are sensed and found so easily. You

(16:13):
do not really have to want for anything. You just
need to be yourself and be with nature. By following
your instincts, the things you need will come to you
like magic. What a life. You look out the view

(16:35):
beyond the tree once more, and the pretty flowers and
the plants, the darting bugs, the chirping birds and buzzing bees,
all swooping and dancing amongst one another in a beautiful ballet.
You wish you could go play with them too. You

(16:58):
think to yourself, I will go join the rest of
the creatures in the gardens soon enough, introduce myself and
maybe play awhile. But right now I feel so terribly sleepy,
sleepier than I have ever felt. Ah ah. A sudden

(17:24):
urge for a nap comes over you. You're feeling awfully
tired from your big meal. You wrap yourself up in
a special homemade cozy caterpillar blanket. It's so comfy and welcoming,
you feel right at home in it. You made it

(17:48):
to yourself but you don't know how. It is alike
the world's most beautiful and comfortable duvet, and sparkly soft
and fluffy, and it fits your body as though it
were made just for you. You cover your whole body from

(18:14):
your head right down to your toes, and hang down
from a branch so no one can disturb you, hidden
behind lots of leaves and sheltered from the cool breeze.
Just as you are snuggling your head down into this
cozy caterpillar blanket, you see another caterpillar emerging from its

(18:40):
bed on a nearby leaf. In some ways, it looks
just like you, but it's not. As it crawls out,
you realize it has two big, beautiful wings fluttering on
its back. Whoa, you think, is that what I will

(19:05):
become soon? A butterfly? You watch as the butterfly flaps
its wings and saws off into the sky for the
very first time. What an amazing feeling that must be
to ride the wind and be completely free. Seeing what

(19:31):
you are soon to become makes you all the more
eager to snuggle up in your caterpillar blanket and drift
off to sleep. So that's exactly what you decide to do.
After sliding as far down into your handmade bed as

(19:51):
you can, you take a deep breath in and close
your eyes. The flowers and trees, the birds and the
bees all wishing you a good night. They can't wait
to see you emerge as a beautiful butterfly. You fall

(20:17):
so easily and gently into the sleep, it is as
though nature itself planted it just for you. What a
wonderful place to be. Cozy, warm, safe and settled in

(20:38):
your very own custom made bed. And as the sounds
of nature lull you to sleep, you drift into the
most pleasant of dreams about the wings you'll grow and
the adventures you'll have. But right now you're comfortable and

(21:01):
content where you are, snuggled up and safe in bed.
Good night, little dreamer, and sweet dreams Up.
