• Buddha teaches us to question our perceptions, as most are false
• Peace becomes possible when we return to ourselves in the present moment
• The quality of being determines the quality of doing - stillness has value

Candee (00:20):
I welcome you to Solace: Soul + Grief.
My name's Candee Lucas and I'ma grief chaplain.
I accompany those who aregrieving any kind of loss and I
ask that you let me accompanyyou today.
You're always welcome in thiscircle of healing, love and

(00:41):
support.
Remember, we are all on thisjourney together.
If, in our daily life, we cansmile, if we can be peaceful and
happy, not only we but everyonewill profit from it.

(01:05):
This is the most basic kind ofpeace work.
Because you are here now, youhave arrived, you are home.
We can practice peace at anymoment in any day.
We do this simply by stoppingwhatever else we are doing,

(01:28):
returning to our in-breath andout-breath and bringing our
awareness to the present moment.
That way, the condition forhappiness is in us and around us
.
For happiness is in us andaround us.
We do so much, we run soquickly.

(01:50):
The situation is difficult andmany people say don't just sit
there, do something.
But doing more things may makethe situation worse.
So you should just say don'tjust do something, sit there,

(02:11):
sit there, stop, be yourselffirst and begin from there.
What follows are a series ofthoughts, breath moments and
breath prayers.

(02:32):
I am going to say it twice andconsider using Lectio Divina or
writing one of the thoughts downthat speaks to you.
May you find peace in yourdaily life, in your families and

(03:05):
with your loved ones and in theworld.
When we can come back toourselves and ground ourselves
in the present moment, we canhandle even the most difficult
and challenging of situationsand peace becomes possible.
All of us are only human and wehave wrong perceptions every day

(03:28):
.
Our loved ones and our peers, our workmates, are also subject
to wrong perceptions.
So we must help each other tosee more clearly and more deeply
.
We should not just trust ourperceptions too much.
That is something the Buddhataught.

(03:49):
Are you sure of yourperceptions, he asked us.
Are you sure?
There is a river of perceptionsin you.
You should sit down on thebank of this river and
contemplate your perceptions.
Most of our perceptions, theBuddha said, are false.

(04:11):
This question is addressed toyou.
It is a bell of mindfulness.
All of us are only human and wehave wrong perceptions every
day.

We tend to think in terms ofdoing rather than being.

(06:43):
Many of us are used to runningaround from this to that.
We can't refrain from alwaysdoing things.
It has become a habit.
We think that when we're notdoing something, we're wasting
time, but that isn't true.
Our time is first of all for usto be alive, to be at peace, to

(07:08):
be in joy and to be in loving.
That is what the world needsmost.
We tend to think in terms ofdoing rather than being.

If we know the art of beingpeaceful, of being solid, then
we have the ground for everyaction, because the ground for
action is to be.
The quality of being determinesthe quality of doing.

(08:12):
The value of our action dependson the value of our non-action.
So doing nothing is alreadydoing something.
It is bringing about thedimension of being.
It's not easy just to be.
It's not easy just to be,especially when we are grieving.
But if you cannot be happy andrelaxed and smiling when you're

(08:40):
not doing something, you'requite strong.
Doing nothing brings about thequality of being, which is very
important.
So doing nothing is actuallysomething.

Every one of us is a miraculousflower in the garden of humanity

(10:16):
.
If you look deeply intoyourself, you will see that you
possess everything.
As the poet Walt Whitman said--I am large, I contain
multitudes--.
If you practice deep looking, you will discover this truth the

As we grieve, the seeds ofnegativity are always there, but

(11:36):
very positive seeds also exist, such as the seeds of compassion
, tolerance and love.
These seeds are all there is inthe soil, but without rain they
cannot manifest.
Our practice is to recognizeand water the positive seeds.

If you recognize the seed ofcompassion in yourself and for
yourself and for others, youshould make sure that it is
watered several times a day.
