Mothering Yourself: Essential Tools for Self-Love and Compassion

In this episode of SolSocial with Dr. Makeba and Friends, Dr. Makeba discusses the importance of self-mothering. She offers four essential tools to help individuals nurture themselves: listening to what they need, offering themselves comfort, letting go of perfectionism, and being their own support system. Dr. Makeba (00:05):
Welcome back to SolSocial with Dr.
Makeba and friends.
I'm Dr.
Makeba, and today we're going toexplore something deeply
important, something we don'talways talk about enough.
How to mother yourself, whetheryou realize it or not, you are
already carrying within you thecapacity to love.
Care for and nurture yourself inways that no one else can.

(00:30):
Today's episode is all aboutlearning to tap into that power,
the power of self mothering, andhow it can bring you the peace
and healing you deserve.
It's about nurturing yourselfjust as you would a child,
offering yourself love, compassion, and care in every
moment.

(00:50):
You are more held than yourealize.
Even in the moments when youfeel alone, uncertain or
overwhelmed, there is a part ofyou that knows how to nurture,
how to soothe, how to heal.
It's the same part that wants tobe mothered, loved and
cherished.
That part that just needs toknow that everything is gonna be

(01:12):
okay.
But here's the secret.
We can give that love toourselves.
We can mother ourselves in theways we've always needed.
And when we do that, it changeseverything.
So today I wanna share some waysthat you can begin to mother
yourself with compassion,tenderness, and grace.

(01:32):
Tool number one, listen to whatyou need.
Mothering yourself starts withlistening.
What do you need?
So often we push our needs asidebecause we're too busy taking
care of everything and everyoneelse, but just like a loving
mother, would you need to checkin with yourself?

(01:52):
I want you to take a momentright now if you can and ask
yourself, what do I need in thismoment?
Maybe it's rest, maybe it'snourishment, or maybe it's just
five minutes of quiet.
Whatever it is, honor thatlistening to yourself is the

(02:13):
first act of self mothering.
You deserve to be heard.
The person who needs to hear youmost is yourself.
So let's take a moment right nowto just listen.

(02:38):
Tool number two, offer yourselfcomfort.
When life feels hard, we oftenlook to others to find comfort.
But what if I told you that youcould offer that same comfort to
yourself just like a motherwould comfort her child in times
of distress?
You can soothe yourself withgentle, loving actions.
Here's a practice I want you totry.

(03:00):
When you're feeling stressed oroverwhelmed, place your hand on
your heart.
Take a deep breath and say toyourself, I am here for you.
I.
Am here for you.

(03:21):
I am here for you.
It may feel a little strange atfirst, but it's incredibly
powerful.
You're reminding yourself thatyou are safe, that you are
loved, and that you don't haveto face everything alone.
It's a simple gesture, but itcan make a world of difference
in how you feel.

(03:42):
Tool number three, let go ofperfectionism.
We've all heard the phrase, nobody's perfect, and yet we
still hold ourselves toimpossible standards.
Impossible.
Part of mothering yourself islearning to let go of those
unrealistic expectations andembracing your beautiful,
imperfect humanity.

(04:04):
Just be perfectly imperfect.
Think of a mother's love.
It's not conditional.
A mother doesn't love her childless because they make mistakes.
She loves them through it, andthat's the kind of love you need
to give yourself.
Let go of the need to beperfect.

(04:25):
Let go of the pressure to haveit all together all the time.
I want you to practice sayingthis, I'm doing my best and
that's enough.
I'm doing my best.
And that's enough.
I'm doing my best, and that'senough.

(04:48):
When you let go ofperfectionism, you create space
for compassion and growth.
Tool number four, be your ownsupport system.
Sometimes we expect others tofill the emotional gaps in our
lives.
We look to friends, family, andpartners to make us feel whole,
supportive and validated.
We are social beings and itmakes sense that we would reach

(05:10):
out to others.
Yeah, know these relationships.
They're important, but we can'trely on others to give us the
love and support that we cangive ourselves.
Being your own support systemmeans showing up for yourself in
the way a loving mother would.
It's about being your owncheerleader, your own protector.
Your own source of strength.

(05:31):
When something goes wrong, don'tbeat yourself up.
Instead, ask, how can I supportmyself through this?
You'll be amazed at howresilient you become when you
start relying on your own loveand support.
The beautiful thing aboutmothering yourself is that it's
always available to you.
You don't have to wait forsomeone else to care for you.
You have the power to do itright now by listening to what

(05:55):
you need.
Offering yourself comfort, letting go of perfectionism and
being your own support system, you'll begin to feel more at
peace, more whole, and moreconnected to yourself.
You deserve to be loved and thatlove starts within.
Remember to nurture yourselfdaily.
You deserve the same love andcare that you give to others.
