“We Are Love” – Song Commentary by Dr. Pelè

In this heartfelt commentary, Dr. Pelè shares the personal story and inspiration behind his original song “We Are Love.”

From his childhood in war-torn Nigeria—where his mother’s songs brought peace and hope—to the global pandemic that inspired this message of unity, “We Are Love” is a reminder that when we strip away all the fear, division, and noise, what remains is love.

In this episode, you’ll hear how:
 • The song was born during the isolation of COVID-19
 • A decades-old lyric from Dr. Pelè’s London bandmates (who worked with Prince and Mazarati) found new meaning
 • The music and message merge into a timeless call for healing and togetherness

✨ “We Are Love” isn’t just a song—it’s a declaration of who we truly are.

Dr. Pelè (00:00):
Hey, this is Dr.
Palay, and I want to welcomeyou to my commentary on one of
my favorite songs.
We Are Love.
A song I wrote several yearsago.
Check out the song in thecommentary below.
We are love.
That's all we are.
We are love.
That's all we are.
We are love.
We are love.

(00:21):
For that is all we are.
That's all we are.
We are love.
For that is all we are.
For the answer.

(00:44):
But it's been so long.
We forgot the question.
We forgot the key.
That's all we are.

(01:22):
That's all we are.
That's all we are together.
Together.
We've come this off.
We've come this far.
We've come to be on.
Everybody's wanted.

(01:48):
That's all we're all we up.

(02:35):
We've come.

(04:40):
I was born in a small village inNigeria.
Some of my earliest memories ofmy mother is singing.
Even during times of war andfear.
We had to run and hide in theforest during the Biafran War.
And even in those moments ofdanger, her voice brought peace.
That connection between musicand healing never left me.

(05:05):
It taught me that music isn'tjust entertainment.
It's medicine.
It's hope.
And that's exactly what I wasleaning into when I wrote, We
Are Love.
I wrote this song during theCOVID-19 pandemic.
One of the darkest and mostuncertain moments we've all
shared as a human family.

(05:26):
I was literally sitting at homein lockdown, like most of us,
reflecting on all the division, the fear, the chaos.
And I thought, what if wereminded ourselves who we really
are?
To me, the answer was clear.
We are love.
That's not just a lyric.
That's a truth.

(05:46):
I wanted to shout from therooftop.
When we strip away all thenoise, all the labels, all the
fear, what's left is love.
It's what connects us.
It's what carried us this far.
And it's what will carry usforward.
Now, musically, what makes WeAre Love really special for me

(06:08):
is how it bridges time.
Literally.
The lyrical scene for this songactually came from a writing
session I had decades ago withmy old Coco Black bandmates in
London.
That was me, Marvin, and uhTony Christian.
The two of them, by the way, used to be members of a band
called Maserati that Prince puttogether.

(06:29):
And after those days, theyjoined me in our band, Cocoa
Black.
Now, one of the lines we wroteback then was, Everybody is
searching for the answer.
And it stuck with me all theseyears.
And during COVID, that lyricsuddenly made sense in a new
way.
I paired it with a new line.

(06:50):
But it's been so long, weforgot the question.
And that idea became theemotional core of the song.
Musically, it's simple butpowerful.
The chords create a sense ofunity and openness.
The lyrics are circular, repeating phrases like, we are
love, love, love.

(07:11):
Almost like a chant or areminder that I keep echoing.
That was intentional.
And at the end, I added areflective line.
When will humanity learn?
And that's not meant to be acritique, it's it's a question
from the heart.
It's a longing.
Because when we truly learnthat we are love, one love will

(07:36):
finally start to heal.
So that's my commentary on oneof my favorite songs, one of the
songs I wrote a while agocalled We Are Love.
Follow the links below for avideo of the song or a link to
the song on Spotify or yourfavorite uh music outlet.
And until next time, I want towish you love, peace, and

(07:57):
profitable happiness.
All the best.
