Brian Plachta (00:02):
Welcome back to
Spirituality on the Go, the
podcast where you can learntools to put into your spiritual
toolbox to live in the divineflow of inner peace, balance,
wholeness.
Today we're gonna dive intosomething that a lot of us feel
from time to time (00:23):
restless;
that sense of restlessness that
seems to be a constant hum ofUnease.
That feeling that we're alwaysbusy, busy, busy doing
something, something, something.
Our bodies are wound up.
We jump from activity toactivity.
(00:45):
Always searching.
Always looking for a peakexperience.
Feeling that no matter what wedo, peace is always out of
reach.
And we end up feeling like acrazy squirrel chasing its tail,
rushing through life, lookingfor clarity, connection, or
(01:09):
simply a moment of calm.
But here's a question.
What if our restlessness isn't aproblem to solve?
What if restlessness is a roadsign that's pointing us towards
something deeper?
An invitation to reconnect withthe present moment, ourselves,
(01:34):
and God; to center ourselves inour mind, body, and spirit in
the present moment.
Saint Augustine tells us thatour hearts are restless until
they rest in God.
Augustine believed that ourrestlessness is a longing, a
(01:57):
natural longing, for divineconnection; a connection that's
always present within us.
But the fast pace and noise oflife obscures that presence of
the divine within us.
(02:19):
That restlessness is in factperhaps a gift.
It's a traffic sign that when wenotice it, points us inward to
our deepest self, to stop andreconnect with our souls, our
hearts.
So if restlessness is aninvitation, and it's a natural
(02:41):
part of who we are, of how we'rewired, how do we use the
restlessness as a teacher, as areminder to pause and reconnect
with ourselves and live in thepresent moment?
One way is through using thetool of meditation, those
(03:02):
spiritual practices that we canpick up from time to time and
use during times of meditationand also during the busy days of
life when we need to slow downand reconnect.
So let's take a moment, if youwould, and I'd like to invite
(03:23):
you into a quiet, guidedmeditation.
A time where you can be presentand allow your restlessness
through this meditation tobecome an invitation to the
present moment.
So if you would, find a place tobe comfortable and sit alone in
(03:47):
the quiet for a few moments.
Once you find that space, Iinvite you to close your eyes.
Take a couple of deep breaths inand out.
And notice your body.
Notice how your skin isconnecting to either the chair
(04:10):
or couch you're sitting on.
Just feel its touch upon yourbody.
Now imagine as you sit there, inthe quiet, with your eyes
closed, noticing your breath, allowing your mind to sink into
(04:36):
your heart space, imaginethere's a soft, warm light
that's glowing in the center ofyour chest.
Notice this light within yourchest.
What does it feel like?
What do you imagine?
(04:59):
The light within your chest islike, what do you notice?
You might feel a gentle warmthin your chest, maybe a soft
glow.
A radiance within that chestspace there within you as the
(05:23):
light fills your chest.
This light is the light ofChrist, the light of God within
you, the divine presence, yoursoul.
This is where your mind, body, and spirit are one within your
(05:44):
heart space, your soul.
A steady loving, radiant calmwithin you.
Allow yourself to bask in thatlight, shining gently, warmly,
(06:10):
glowing within you.
Notice the light growingbrighter within you.
A little stronger, still gentle.
But perhaps spreading throughoutyour body.
(06:31):
Throughout your chest.
Into your shoulders.
Into your arms, throughout yourwhole body, as the warmth from
that light within your chestexpands gently into all of you,
your entire Being.
(07:03):
Allow yourself to rest in thelight, the warmth flowing within
you.
If you notice any restlessness,or maybe your thoughts begin to
race again, that's fine.
That happens to all of us.
(07:24):
Instead of fighting them, tryingto shoo them away, simply
acknowledge they're there.
It happens to all of us.
And let them just drift by likeclouds in the sky.
And then gently return to thefelt sense in your body of that
light in your chest.
(07:45):
The warmth, the glow, the gentlepresence.
And when you're ready, slowlybring your awareness back to the
(08:07):
room that you're in.
Maybe wiggle your fingers andyour toes, and then open your
eyes.
And notice.
How do you feel?
Have just these few moments ofstillness allowed something to
shift inside of you?
(08:29):
Have you felt that restlessnesscalm, even for a few moments?
Remember, through thisexperience, that you carry this
light within you.
You are the light of God, theDivine.
Within you, you and the divineas one.
(08:54):
And you can carry this light.
You do carry this light withinyou throughout your entire day.
It never goes out.
It's always there.
And by returning to thispractice, even in the midst of
the busyness of the day, you cannotice the restlessness,
whenever it appears, and see itas an invitation to pause; to
(09:19):
notice the light, the warmthwithin your chest, radiating
within you, calming you, centering you in your true self
in God.
May you carry this light withinyou, always, and return to it,
(09:41):
an awareness of it whenever youneed to, and allow this practice
to help you find moments of calmeven in life's busyness.
May the restlessness be aninvitation to the light that
glows within you.
The light of love.
