In our massive country, there are card collectors throughout
the land participating in the hobby.
There's Mike of Junk Wax Hero and Greg of Midlife Cards, and
while distance may separate them, here is where they come
together to talk cards. Hey everybody, it is Mike, Junk

(00:21):
Wax Hero, joined by Greg from Midlife Cards.
Greg, how are you today? I'm doing well.
We're recording this on a Thursday which means I have one
day left until the weekend. Lucy has a game so I'm going to
take 1/2 day sub to go to the game and so I have 1/2 day until

(00:41):
the weekend. We've had a lot of colds going
on here in Maine, a lot of people coming down with colds,
flu, California, Sacramento areaand not so much.
No, I've, I've, I'm, I would sayI'm at this point 90% of the way
through my cold, which started 15 days ago.

(01:03):
It's a lingering nasal chest thing that started as a scratchy
throat and has worked its way through.
And I'm sure it's COVID of COVIDvariant of some sort.
But I mean, I feel OK, but it's,it's a little annoying, but
it's, it's, you know, we're fine.

(01:24):
I, I, we're going to talk about cards here in a minute, but I,
I, I got COVID 3 1/2 years ago and other than that, I have had
zero sign of any sort of illnessin seven years.
No, no stuffy nose, no, no sneezing, nothing in seven
years. I think that your immune system

(01:45):
broke the cult the the code. I mean, your immune system said
I've I've accomplished everything I need to accomplish
now. Yeah, I just think that.
You're definitely getting sick in the next week.
I mean, there's a no hitter and the, the the pitcher's at the
end of the dugout by himself right now and somebody's the bat

(02:07):
boy just said, hey, you haven't you haven't given up a hit yet.
We're in the 8th inning, buddy. Yeah, great comparison.
So last week we had a really funpodcast and you talked about a
having been scammed on eBay on asports card purchase.
You have an update on that, right?
I have an update so if you missed it last week, shame on

(02:31):
you. But Long story short, what
happened was I bought something on eBay.
It never showed up. I kept forgetting about it.
I opened a case before I knew it, it had been two months.
I reached out and eBay said, sorry, it's been too long ago,
It's been more than 30 days. And I'm like, well, isn't that

(02:52):
the point? And and that's where we left
off. So I was pretty fired up.
And again, the thing that started stirring the drink, the
straw was, Mike, your video about the scam that blew up,
your video that blew up about a scam that was happening.
And I'm like, I'm not going to get scammed.

(03:13):
And in the video you said, you know, it's probably not worth
your time, Greg. It's a $21.00 purchase of a
Bernie Williams card. And I was not willing to accept
defeat. So here's what happened.
So it literally we finished recording last week and I
immediately went in to eBay and I got the number and I put in my

(03:38):
stuff and they called me and thelady said, you know what, what
happened? I told her story and she goes,
let me check with the supervisor, I'll be right back.
OK, well, they're going to fix this.
She comes back and she says, well, Sir, it's been more than

(04:00):
30 days. So the eBay guarantee, the eBay
money back guarantee is no longer valid.
So. And I said, wait a second, Let
me just stop you right there. I said when you picked up the
phone, you said, hello, Mr. Miller, thank you for being a
customer for the past 18 years. And now what you're telling me

(04:24):
is you're not going to refund me$21.00 because I got scammed
more than 30 days ago? And she goes, well.
And I said, what you're telling me is that eBay isn't going to
help me. She goes, no, that's not what I
said. And I said, whoa, whoa, wait,
wait, so eBay is going to help me.

(04:46):
She goes, well, Sir, it's been more than 30 days.
I said, so eBay is not going to help me.
And she said, well, no, Sir. And I said, is eBay going to
help me or eBay not going to help me?
Because it doesn't sound like eBay is going to help me.
And she goes, well, we can't refund the money, I guess.
So you're not going to help me. She said you'll need to call

(05:08):
your bank. Your bank can help you.
So I go, oh, so the platform of eBay is not going to help me and
you want my bank to bail you out?
And she said, well, you need to call your, your financial
institution. So I said, is there going to be

(05:31):
a survey at the end of this call?
I'm really hoping there's going to be a Sir because I was
turning the screws. And she said, I don't know, Sir.
And then she hung up and I'm like, whoa, you hung up on me.
I'm the one that's out the 21 bucks, so I refuse to be denied.
So I immediately called up my bank and they asked me for the

(05:54):
details of the situation. They said, OK, we're going to
open a case. We're going to, you know, have
somebody look into it. And 24 hours later I got an
e-mail and it said we've looked into the details of your case
and we have refunded you your $21.
Wow. So eBay, thanks for nothing,

(06:15):
banking institution hearts and unicorns and rainbows and hugs
and butterflies for you. That's legitimately shocking
that they chose to tell you theythey can't do anything about it
and that they're OK with people being scammed on their platform
as long as it was more than 30 days ago.

(06:37):
Right. I I mean, how long am I supposed
to? What's the window where I'm
supposed to go? OK, it's been long enough that I
can open a case, but it hasn't been long enough that I don't
have a case cuz it's been too long.
Like what is it should say in there?
From day 15 to 28 is when you can do something.

(06:59):
I mean, it's it's wild. It's like the whole point of
eBay is to be a safe place to conduct commerce with some
stranger. And then the stranger doesn't
even doesn't send the thing. But because I didn't file a
complaint in 30 days, I don't get anything.
Yeah. And that phone call cost them

(07:20):
more than $21.00 just in in labor and technology cost more
than $21.00. And they could have ended that
phone call with a happy customerthat would have cost them $40.
But instead they chose to have it cost let's say $20.
I'm making up the numbers but sothey chose to have it only cost

(07:40):
$20 and an unhappy customer which is seems like bad business
to me. You know what I should have
done? I should have said, you know,
ma'am, I have a podcast and do. You know who I am.
I'm midlife, Greg. I'm going to get my pound of
flesh. So yeah, I mean it.

(08:02):
It's one of those things where Iguess my take away is I learned,
I learned their policy, which I had no idea that that would be a
policy. And one of the reasons I wanted
to bring it up, to be honest with you, is because I, I think
it's important other people are aware of that policy.
You know, I think that it's important.
I, I, I never would have guessedthat.

(08:23):
So now if you ever have an issuewhere the card hasn't shown up
and it's been 20 days, you need to go open a case ASAP.
And then if it shows up the nextday then close the case.
Yeah, if you ever get pulled over by a police officer, you
should say, do you know who I am?
I'm a sports card. YouTube.

(08:44):
How dare. You exactly.
I'll say I'm friends with Junk Wax Hero and.
They will say, whoa, OK. I'm still waiting to meet
someone in real life that recognizes me.
That hasn't happened where I'm like, you know, at the mall or

(09:05):
something. Not that I'd ever go to a mall,
but you know what I mean. I did have somebody who knew
somebody. So there was person who views my
different some of my episodes. And he realized cause of a
sweatshirt I had on that. I worked at the high school that
I work at and he had a friend who works at the high school.

(09:25):
So my friend at the high school said do you have a YouTube
channel, 'cause my friend wants to meet you.
I was like, yeah. So that was the only kind of
indirect. This is why I always take off
any of my employer gear before Ido a video.
Yeah, that's smart. But I have never met anybody
outside of a card show or card shop that watched my video.

(09:48):
If you when I was at the National, I went with Tony to
Wrigley Field and somebody recognized both of us.
You don't really count that 'cause you're still kind of at
the National. He yeah, that was really cool.
And he had been watching my video that morning, which was
funny. But I have had people from past
portions of my life who have been searching YouTube for

(10:11):
sports card content and discovered my channel and said
hey, I know this guy and then reached out to me or commented
about it. That's pretty cool.
It is very cool. Yeah, so scam deal.
I guess it's over. So I I don't know, I'll find
something else to complain about.

(10:31):
How about we complain about modern sports cards?
Yeah, You know, I, I, it's weirdthat, you know, a lot of us put
ourselves in these boxes of I'm a this type of self identifying
box. If I'm in this, you know, type
of collector and I hang out withother people who are this type

(10:53):
of collector. But in reality, I think when we
look at the Venn diagram of collecting, there's so much
overlap and there's very little actually that's not overlap.
And so some of the channels I enjoy the most are modern guys.
I love stacking slabs. I love listening to Hoge and the

(11:17):
Hoge cast and the crossover. And there, I mean, I'm just
mentioning a couple. I love King of Cards.
There's a there's a lot of people that are modern cards and
so and I'm just have a blast listening even though it's not
really what I collect. And So what, what I have been

(11:38):
doing literally over the last last night I was, I was should
have been asleep, but I kept searching and I'm a big 49er fan
and like one of my favorite 49ers ever is Patrick Willis.
So I'm looking at what man, I want to get a really cool
Patrick Willis card. Maybe I should get a few.

(11:59):
Nobody likes defensive player cards, so they're probably cheap
so I can get one of my favorite guys, some cool cards.
So I start looking at his rookieyear.
I'm like, OK, 2007 Patrick Willis.
Maybe I'll throw in auto on there because that would be
cool. And I start looking and I'm
like, I don't know which of these are good.

(12:21):
Like which of these? What's the good one?
And are we talking about Panini in 2007?
No. Well, there was some National
Treasure stuff in there and thenthere was some Tops Chrome and
there were some Bowman Chrome. So I think the license must have
been with tops at that point. And and I'm like, I don't know,

(12:45):
I don't know what I'm looking at.
And then it's like, you know, a lot of people would would say
we'll get the car. Do you think looks cool?
It's a great point. Like, yeah, I should get the
card that I look at it and I go,that's cool.
But I also don't want to get a card that's not I, I want to get
a card that's special for that era, you know, not just a card

(13:06):
that looks cool in that era, because there are a lot of cards
that maybe look cool, but they're not like they're not
part of the story of car football cards from that era.
I, I wanted to be. And that's one of the things
Hoge talks about all the time islike, well, they're one of ones.
And then they're out of fives and 10's and well, this was the

(13:28):
first year that they did patchesor this was the first year they
had refractor autos. And and then there's like a
whole science to it. And I'm like, all I know is
there's a bunch of cards that have Patrick Willison.
Some of them have good autos, some of them have bad ones.
Some of them have patches. Some of them he's in a Misses
Ole Miss uniform. Some of them he's in a, you

(13:50):
know, and a niner uniform. Some there's no logo.
And I'm like, I don't know what I'm looking at.
And I want I want to know. And everyone says vintage is way
more complicated than modern, and I get that.
But I don't know what I'm looking at and I don't know how
to figure out what I'm looking at do.
You want me to simplify it as best as I can for you right now?

(14:13):
Yes. So I have the same problem.
I love Modern, by the way. So when I said let's complain
about Modern, I'm not really going to complain about Modern
because you can ignore all the noise with Modern and there's a
lot of noise and still love Modern cards 'cause I have a ton
of modern cars on my wall right now and I stick with the very

(14:37):
basics. I want rookie tops Chrome
refractor autograph. That's my ideal item if I can
afford it. If I can't afford it then I want
a rookie tops Chrome refractor without the autograph.
Just the base refractor. You can also go to like a gold

(15:01):
refractor or something like that.
Stay. Wait there.
There's like 100 different parallels now in 2025.
Stick with the basics. Black refractor, gold refractor,
things like that. I usually just stay with the
very base refractor. Now if you're talking about
basketball, football with Paninibefore they taken over by Tops
shortly. I go with the rookie Panini

(15:24):
silver prism. I don't do autographs with
basketball because they're outrageously expensive and
largely they are sticker autographs.
You kind of course get on card autographs, but I just go with
the Panini Silver Prism rookie card for basketball.
I don't collect football. I also like Bowman Chrome

(15:48):
refractor rookies or not rookies, but first Bowman for
baseball. For baseball, I ignore every
other set and I ignore every other parallel.
So that's good advice. So let me counter with this.
So when I'm looking at Pat Patrick Willis cards, for
example, and, and I'll talk about baseball cards too, 'cause

(16:09):
I had I've had a similar path with some, some baseball stuff.
So the tops Chrome refractor autos of Patrick Willis are
affordable, but they're all sticker autos and I'm not a big
sticker auto guy. So I'm like, OK, I don't want

(16:31):
the sticker auto, but I want some important Patrick Willis
cards. So, so if they're all those are
stickers and I'm not really feeling the sticker auto, then
what do I, what did I, what do Igo after?
So then I was like, OK, let's again, like what you're saying,
I want to simplify it. So I think the gold refractor is

(16:56):
the best looking refractor. I think it will always be cool,
always be valued. So I'm like, maybe I just 'cause
I, I want a modern project is what I want.
And I was like, maybe I'll just start doing Patrick Willis
stuff. And then I was like, well, I I
like Mariano Rivera and he's a relief pitcher, so stuff's not

(17:18):
going to be crazy expensive, even though he's like one of the
best ever. So I was like, maybe what I'll
try to do is a run of tops, Chrome, gold, Mariano Rivera
cards. And one of my, one of the all
time great, one of my all time favorite baseball moments is a
Mariano Rivera moment. Oh boy.

(17:38):
Here we go, here we go. There it is.
Just when I was starting to like, you know, so when I am
looking at these gold refractors, I'm looking and I'm
like, well, that one's really affordable, but it's not
numbered, but it's gold. So did they just not number
them? And then I'm looking and I'm

(18:00):
like, this one's out of like, I don't remember what it was 380
or 450 or 449 or something. And I'm like, so wait, so and
for a few, for a year or two, there was no numbering.
And then there was a numbering out of like a few 100 and then
there's A and then it goes to like out of 50.

(18:21):
So I'm like, so when did it go to out of 50?
When did it go to numbered at all?
So then I'm I'm texting with Dylan and Dylan double D is
like, well, oh, so this is here. He's like pumped.
He's like, oh man, this is awesome.
So he's like trying to help me and he's like, OK, so in this
year they started numbering themand then this year they, you

(18:42):
know, went to this number and I'm like, how do you know this,
'cause I'm like, more than anything I want to figure out
how do I find out about it? Like, where did you learn this?
And he goes, oh, I just shamed shoebox legends.
I, I, I would text them like 15 times a day for like 2 months
try. And he's just like, I, I'd ask
him questions and he'd answer it.

(19:02):
And I'm like, I don't want to bug someone.
But so then I'm like sitting there going, well, maybe instead
of Rivera, I go Jeter because I love Jeter and I know people
think he's overrated and stuff, but what Jeter did off the field
is more important than we did onthe field.
And you know, his his hit total anyway.

(19:23):
I love Derek Jeter and I'm like, maybe I do Jeter and then like
they're crazy expensive for likea gold refractor.
It's like like his, you know, 15th year card is like like
super expensive. I'm like, I can't spend $1000 on
this. I could buy a, could buy a Ty
Cobb card for $1000. So wouldn't.

(19:44):
So then I'm starting to go, well, well, am I just, what am I
doing? So I'm just in this, I'm in this
tornado. It's like spinning and I'm just
like flying around with, you know, Dorothy is flying by and
cows from movies are flying by. And I'm like, I don't know what
I'm doing. And I want to get into it.
Modern people. I'm interested but I don't get

(20:08):
it. So you're going, first of all,
you're talking about two of the most collectible 2 of the all
time greats from the greatest team from the one of the
greatest dynasties of all time. All right, you're getting back
in the good graces. Which, by the way, Jeter never
did anything off the field otherthan destroy the Marlins.

(20:28):
So I don't know. I don't know what you're talking
about, but so. Jeter yeah, very expensive, but
I go through the same thing withpaid remarkiness.
Adam, Splendid Sports. Oh yeah.
We know Adam has an insane PedroMartinez.
One of the best in the world. Yes, yes.

(20:51):
And I envy that collection. I can't spend that kind of money
on Pedro Martinez cards. So I'm going, I'm down grading
to Nomar Garcia Para, who by thetime by the time he had left the
Red Sox, I did not like him anymore.
But I can remember how much I loved Nomar from 1997 through

(21:15):
like 2002 for five or six seasons.
He was one of my favorite baseball players and his cards
are cheap. So I'm buying all of as many of
his base refractors as I had tops Chrome refractors, Bowman
Chrome refractors, Stadium Club Chrome refractors as I can.

(21:36):
And I'll just have a display here in my office.
I love, first of all, I really like Nomar.
He's one of my favorite all timeRed Sox and I love that.
That's exactly the sweet spot that I'm looking for is a guy
that I really liked who's affordable, but I don't want to

(22:00):
just go get a bunch of like the silver Prisms because those are
kind of like they're not, they're not super special.
They're they're kind of like you're checking boxes instead of
like like I want, I want to collect a little bit at like the
next level, like a little bit more in than that.

(22:20):
I will say this though, and and I haven't shown this, obviously
I haven't shown my channel hasn't shown up in the mail yet.
I don't think I showed you, but one of my former students was
drafted, Matt Manning was drafted 9th by the Tigers, was
in their system for a long time, had a couple of really good
seasons in the majors. He gave me a game used jersey

(22:41):
from the Tigers. He ends up getting released mid
year this year and he signs on with the Phillies and then he's
in the Phillies system and they're working with him and
like they're, you know, development system like just
trying to rebuild him. And the Philly signed Walker

(23:02):
Buehler and Matt was taking up a40 man roster spot.
And so they they cut Matt to getWalker Buehler signed on the 40
man roster spot. Anyway, that's a long story to
where I am with Matt. Great guy.
I know I'll golf with him in thenext couple of months.
He's home now and I, I got his black one of one finite.

(23:29):
It's a cool card and it's a super cool card.
It's basically one of his best, if not his best prism card.
And it was, they had an asking price of $200 on it.
And I'm like, that's reasonable.I mean, it's ungraded what
whatever. And I, I'm like that this guy

(23:51):
doesn't want that card. It's been sitting there.
I've been watching it for two years.
So I offered him. I offered him 40 bucks and he
took it. That's an amazing story.
But how cool is it because I already have his flagship tops
Chrome one of one super factor. So I have one of his best tops

(24:15):
cards. I have his out of five first
Bowman auto and now I have his one of one black finite for 40
bucks. And it's like, but that's kind
of fun. Like that little kind of
treasure hunt. Like this is a this is kind of a
big card. You know, I don't it doesn't

(24:35):
have to be Derek Jeter, but it has to be somebody that's
special to me. But again, I just want to make
sure I understand what I'm getting into.
And if you're in it, it's like, I'll give you, I'll give you an
example. When I was a kid, I played mad.
You played Madden on your like Sega or stuff or something,

(24:56):
right? Madden was like the game, right?
And you, everyone would be Emmett Smith.
You just hurdle the whole way around the end and go score
touchdowns. And then I went like 3 years
where I didn't play Madden. And then I was like with some
friends, like, hey, I want to play Madden.
I'm like, yeah, I'm trying to play Madden.
Like what? What the heck is going on?
I'm lost. Like how do I throw the ball?

(25:19):
Like everything is different andthat's how I feel about modern
cards is I feel like it evolved. It's like you can't stop playing
fantasy football or when you come back, you have to start
from scratch. Like you you're either in it or
you're out. And if you're out, it's like you
just got dropped off on the moon.
And that's how I feel about modern right now is I genuinely,

(25:41):
I'm not a dumb person. I don't think I'm a dumb.
I got good grades in college andstuff, but I don't know what is
happening with modern and I wantit 'cause I like it, I like it.
You need to collect like a ScottBrosius.
No, come on. That's that's where the
affordable stuff is. Scott Brosius was a how many did

(26:03):
he win 4 World Series? Was he on all?
4A's and before that. Oh, so no Jason Giambi either.
Jason I like a little bit more, but that's a whole different.
I I like kind of the tortured soul, like the guy who you know,
but that we don't need to get into Jason Giambi right now.

(26:25):
So yeah, I mean, I think if I were you, I would find, pick a
player, yeah, find a parallel that you like and stick with
that parallel. And it might not be numbered the
same, but you can always find anestimated print run online.
Yeah. I I just Google what's the print
run of so and so a parallel and you can usually find some

(26:49):
estimate somewhere. Yeah, do you watch the brothers
duo with iconic Al and his brother Brian Professor?
Yeah, I have watched one episode.
I think I love Al, Yeah. I mean, his brother's great too.
But yeah, I'll be a fan. I just, I don't have time to

(27:10):
watch enough. All the stuff I want to watch I
don't have time for unfortunately.
Brian's a fellow teacher and he's really into 90s refractors
and I love his channel and I don't have any cards like that,
but I love his channel and a lotof the reason I love is because
I kind of am. I'm, it's like one place.
I feel like he's teaching about 90s refractors and I can start

(27:33):
to learn about it but it just feels so dumb.
Like I feel dumb. Yeah, the 90s refractors are
brutal and they're so expensive.Yeah, I still need a 93 tops.
Finest refractor of like I, I almost bid on a Barry Bonds the

(27:53):
other day and it's like it's like $1000 card.
But I'm like, it's like, if you look at that era, if you look at
the 90s, it's Bonds as the hitter.
I mean, I know some people are yelling King Griffey Junior, you
moron. OK.
But Bonds being in Northern California, Bonds is the guy,

(28:14):
right? And the 93 finest Refractor is
like the set, the parallel that started it all.
And it's like, to me, that's like a super important card.
The Bonds 93 Finest Refractor islike a big card, but then again,
I'm like, or I could go buy, youknow, like a Walter Johnson

(28:39):
card. Right.
Yeah. And that's the struggle I'm
having. I just made an offer this past
week on a 93 Tops Finest refractor of Clemens.
Wait I've been on the same card,is it APSA 7?
It is, yeah. I've bid on that.
I've I've made offers on that card.
Yeah, I made an offer this past week.

(29:00):
I made two or three offers and he what?
Was your offer 'cause they're asking 250 or 255 or something?
I think let me let me look hang on.
I've got my eBay up here. Bids and offers do do do do.
OK, I offered no his buy it now price is 285.

(29:22):
OK. My offer was 220.
I think I offered 220 too. This is unbelievable.
Like we're. Colluding with each other.
Fighting over the same card, brobro, you're no bro.
Bro look at this. I offered 220.

(29:43):
I offered 220. When did you offer 2:20 on that
card? It does not say.
It doesn't say, does it? Three days ago, maybe.
Mine was more than three days ago.
Hang on, I'm I'm gonna Google, I'm gonna go into my Gmail and
see offered. We offered the same amount on

(30:06):
the same exact card. Yeah, that's weird.
Pardon me last. It's the last 93 tops.
Finest refractor I need for whatI wanna do.
No, I don't care about your sob story.
I want the card too, but it's I mean the 285 that he's asking is
fair. I'm just cheap.

(30:27):
I mean 285 is fair for that card.
It's a 7. It's a generation 9 holder,
generation 8 holder. So it's it wasn't graded crazy
long ago. It's a little off center.
The case is a little beat up butyou could get it re slabbed.
Yeah, I don't have an e-mail about it and it's out of my

(30:48):
notifications by now. So it's probably, it was
actually probably 2 weeks ago now that I think about it.
That's about when I sent it. Yeah, 2, two weeks makes sense
because I found out two weeks ago I was getting a new roof and
that's when I was like, oh, got to shut down the sports card
buying for a little while. So yeah, two weeks, maybe even 2

(31:08):
1/2 weeks ago. Dude same card same offer.
That's that's insane. It's very, very unusual. 220
bucks PSA 7 same exact card. Same.
Yeah, I have all of the Red Sox from 93 Tops finest plus the Tim
Wakefield and Clemens is the last one I need.

(31:34):
Maybe I should and? Of course, I think if anybody's
saying why do you say plus Tim Wakefield was because he was
with the Pirates at the time. Yeah, but Tim Wakefield is a
special place in there, in the hearts of Red Sox fans.
And isn't he the one that Boone hit the home run off of?

(31:54):
You had to give me back. I, hey, I, I will say this.
When I took a tour of Fenway Park the day before the Yankees
and the Red Sox faced off there, that was really cool.
Sitting in the dugout, walking along the warning track going

(32:18):
into the Green Monster. That was wild.
It is really, really cool. I can't wait to get a tour of
that iconic Sacramento field. You mean where the A's play?
Yeah, the same place the AAA team has been playing for 30
years. The Rivercats.

(32:39):
Oh my gosh. I did go to a game there this
year though. I would love to go to a game
there honestly. It it's actually really cool
'cause it's this tiny little. Park Yeah, yeah, I went to.
And even that, they couldn't sell tickets unless it was like
the Yankees or Red Sox. They wouldn't even sell out.
And there's like, not that many seats.
Yeah, I went to the Hall of Famegame at the Cooperstown Hall of

(33:01):
Fame Baseball Hall of Fame when I was in 8th grade, and it was
just this tiny little park and it was amazing.
You're sitting right on top of the field, basically.
Yeah. Loved it.
Yeah, yeah, that's pretty cool. 90s cards, it's so easy to get

(33:21):
lost, not in the 90s, but modern, ultra modern, so easy to
get lost. And for me, if I can just stick
with a plan and not get caught up in, oh, I need, I need every
Cooper flag, rookie card, 'causethere's thousands of them.
Cooper flag, by the way, Maine legend, and I'm from Maine, also
a Maine legend, just like Cooperflag.

(33:44):
You know, I, I, I'd love to haveall of Jason Tatum's rookie
cards, Jaylen Brown's rookie cards, never gonna get them.
I don't even try. So I try to get the the iconic
ones and on the by the way, a side benefit of sticking to
these specific cards is that they're the ones that are the
most desirable and the ones thatare more likely to go up in

(34:04):
value over time. Doesn't say, I'm not saying
they're definitely going to, butthey hold their value better
than like a heritage base card or or something that people just
don't care that much about afterthe after the set is released
and people have bought them. They just don't sell that well,

(34:25):
but tops Chrome refractors do. Yeah, that, I mean, it makes
sense 'cause there's always going to be people building the
rainbow and they're recognizableand it's tops and I just, I
don't know, I, I, I do have a Bowman Chrome Patrick Willis

(34:46):
rookie autographed. But it but it's, it's, you know,
third part, it's after the fact autographed.
He about a third of his fan mailto the stadium.
He'll sign. And so I've sent to him before
and not gotten it back and I've sent to him before and gotten it

(35:08):
back. So I do have his Bowman Chrome
Rookie auto D through the mail, but that's an expensive thing.
If you start sending off like $30 cards to get autographed and
they're not coming back, that can get expensive pretty quick.
Yeah, yeah. I can't afford a Tom Brady,

(35:30):
rookie Bowman, Chrome, not even the base.
So I have, I have just the the rookie Bowman, Tom Brady and
it's in APSA 5 because I can't afford A7 or 8.
And I could eventually afford them, of course, but do I want
to spend that much money when I can get a five that looks
amazing? And then same thing with 2009
tops with Steph Curry. I can only afford the tops base

(35:52):
Steph Curry rookie and that costa ton of money.
It's not among the most expensive cars I've ever
purchased. Yeah, that's, I mean, it's that,
yeah, that. And that's The thing is I don't
want to be one of these people who learns from my mistakes on
stuff like that. I want to learn and then not

(36:14):
make big mistakes. So I'm trying to learn
beforehand and maybe it's just because I grew up around vintage
because my dad was a vintage collector, but it just seems a
lot more simplified and, and sure, there are some smaller
releases and some different things, but I just feel like I

(36:36):
understand it and I don't feel like I understand the modern.
And I do like it a lot and I do want to be a, a participant and
at least start dipping my toe ina little bit more.
So I don't know, there, there are.

(36:57):
Let me ask you this. What do you think happened over
the last year? This?
I'm going to I'm going to pivot.Can I pivot?
Pivot, Pivot away. I 'cause we're talking about
modern and, and sometimes, you know, I'm always looking at
like, what got hot? What is hot?

(37:18):
When did it get hot? Why did it get hot?
Like people suddenly pivoting intheir collection, you know, sort
of like how three or four years ago on card playing days,
autographed cards, vintage cards, like just went bonkers.
Why, why did that happen? Soccer cards, specifically

(37:45):
Lionel Messi cards, have just gone crazy.
Like, and I mean like they've like tripled in value in a year.
All of them, All of them are just his iconic rookie cards.
His iconic rookie cards have gone insane, but most messy
cards have gone way up. But that iconic rookie card has

(38:07):
come back down again already. It skyrocketed up and it's back
down that only and I'm putting up air quotes here only half a
million ish dollars when it wentup to 11.5 yeah and PSA 10 went
up to like 1.51 sold for 1.51, sold for like 1.2.
It's back down, I think around half a million last I looked a

(38:28):
week or two ago. So I, I've won.
I, I mean, I'm a soccer fan and so I've wanted a messy card and
I am a collector of what I collect the most are looks and,
and I could talk about this in asecond too, is I can have
another pivot back. But I, I feel like he's got 3

(38:51):
rookie cards and only one of them is good looking.
It's one, one of them is a good looking card and it's sort of a
portrait shot from about his chest up.
It's a really nice looking card.Oh see, I like the other one the
most of the one the PSA 10/1 that went up to one and a half
million you. Like that more than I'm going to

(39:12):
pull them up on the screen. I know we're not supposed to do
this, but I don't care. I I'm going to show you why I
think you're wrong. So I'm going to share my screen
here real quick. So you like this one?
Love it. Yes, OK.
And. We're describing the hang on, go

(39:33):
back to that for a second. Just so people know, this is the
2004 Panini. Lionel Messi mega cracks where
he is dribbling the ball up field and you can see his whole
body and the ball in front of his foot and he's looks like
he's about to Juke out a defender.
Yep, so we got the this one. Oh man, there's this picture.

(40:00):
That's not the card though. This is the one I like.
Yeah, mega cracks. You don't think that's a better
looking card than the other one?No.
Really. Nope.
And frankly, it's not close. So this one is also a mega

(40:25):
cracks, but it's the Barca compule card, which and there's
a couple of them. There's like one in in Italian
and 1 in Spanish and it's like camp.
I don't remember the difference, but the spell, the one of the
words is different. And but I love this image that
right here. So I've wanted this card and so

(40:47):
I've kind of tracked. I mean, I've made offers on this
card. I've almost bought this card a
couple of times and but all of asudden messy cards went nuts.
So. Why do you think that is?
That's my question for you. You can't interrupt me and ask
my question. That's my question.
Right, I think that. They're what happened, I think.

(41:10):
Where did Messi go? Nuts.
I think there are a few things Iconic cards of iconic athletes
have skyrocketed in value in general this year.
Part of that is repack madness. The big repack companies want to
have a like a really iconic cardas their grail inside their

(41:33):
repack product. And so they're buying up guys
like messy guys like Jeter, things like that, that they can
put in and say, hey, look at this amazing card and it creates
more attention for those cards. The wealthy people, the wealthy
buyers out there are also going after because they believe that
they are great investments, iconic cards of iconic athletes.

(41:55):
And then you have the bigger Youtubers.
We're talking about those cards more and more and more.
So this confluence of events hascaused, there's probably more
things happening too with this. It's caused all these cards to
skyrocket in value. So why did it suddenly happen to

(42:17):
Messi in the last 12 months, butit happened to Brady five years
ago? Cause Brady was had just won
another Super Bowl. It's happening to a lot.
Hasn't done anything in. It's happening to all iconic
cards though. If you look at any iconic cards,
in fact, the Messi's come back down.

(42:39):
I'm not sure you could say the same thing about the 89 Upper
deck Griffey, for instance, which has doubled in value this
year. Yeah, it's crazy.
All right, I have one question as we wrap this up.
We're 42 1/2 minutes in. Here's my one question for you.
Who's the who's the GOAT who hasn't gone to the moon yet that

(43:05):
you think is going to go to the moon?
Who is missing? Cause Messi was basically
overlooked. People weren't looking
overlooking Jordan, they weren'toverlooking Brady.
They weren't overlooking, you know, Babe Ruth and stuff or
even, you know, Messi suddenly went, people went, oh, wait,

(43:26):
what about Messi? And then it went way up.
Who's next? Who's the guy being overlooked?
Why? Why does it have to be a guy?
It could be a women's sports star.
I'm. Sorry, you're right.
I apologize to all the ladies out there.
My deepest, my deepest of apologies to the man or woman,
to the individual who is overlooked the most.

(43:48):
Who is it? Larry Bird.
Really. Yeah.
Larry Bird is overlooked. He is overlooked.
He's not the GOAT, no. He's a top seven or eight NBA
player of all time, and he's largely overlooked.

(44:09):
And then you've got guys like Tim Duncan, who was it was
boring, right? There's no Tim Duncan's an all
time great on five NBA championships.
But he was boring and his careerstarted in kind of the tail end
or the the beginning of getting out of the junk wax era.
So there's still a lot of junk wax characteristics of a lot of

(44:30):
his rookie cards. What about baseball?
I guess it would have to be Barry Bonds.
Yeah, that's a. That's a pretty good pick.
That's a pretty good pick. Rodger, Clemens, Both.
I think Clemens is too hate people, people hate Clemens.

(44:51):
Yeah, I do too. Good.
Grief. Yeah.
So, so, so you're going with, you're going with Larry Bird.
Yeah, When was the last time yousaw one of his cards sell at
auction for a ridiculous amount and everybody was talking about,
oh, man, I can't believe this card sold for this much money.

(45:13):
No. It's like he's too Jordan's
shadow is too big. The shadow of Jordan makes
everyone else so in that era, especially so below him.
It takes until the end of Jordan's era before a Kobe or a

(45:34):
LeBron can not be in his shadow 'cause they weren't really.
At the same time, anybody who played while Jordan played is so
many rungs below Jordan in everybody's eyes that I don't.
I don't think all of a sudden they're going to blow up 'cause
they're why. Why not just by Jordan?
Well, another guy would be KevinDurant.
He's not a GOAT, but he's a top 15 to 20 player of all time.

(45:58):
He's won two NBA titles. He was the Finals MVP of both of
those, but because because of, you know, he's got a lot of
controversies. He had the the burner accounts
on Twitter. He's pretty corny.
He left the Thunder to chase rings with with Steph Curry,

(46:18):
which there's really nothing wrong with that.
But the perception by the publicand the collecting public of OK,
you chased rings by by going to the greatest team of all time.
The reason that LeBron saved hislegacy is when he went back to
Cleveland and won. That was the most impressive

(46:42):
thing he ever did. If he had just gone to the Heat
and then he went to the Lakers and he never went back to
Cleveland and took this awful team and and made a title, then
that is his legacy. But I don't know.
So, OK, all right, I'll take I'll take Bird, but I don't

(47:06):
know. It's OK.
It's it's a decent choice. Thank you, this was a joy as
always. This was fun.
This was fun. Now, I don't know if people like
hearing us talk about, I mean, we're talking about cards, but
we're talking about getting scammed and we're talking about

(47:27):
Modern and we're talking about Larry Bird.
I think people like variety. Yeah.
You guys like Variety? Let us know.
Yeah. Do you have any interest in in
asking anybody listening about may be a conversation starter

(47:48):
for one of the upcoming episodes.
You mean having them comment something that we should talk
about? Yeah, Yeah.
I'm always open to that. Well, then down below comment,
comment, I would. I am always interested.
That's why I do my Q&A weekly isbecause I'm always interested.
What does everybody else want totalk about?

(48:08):
And then I always have at least one or two people want to talk
about grading and then people are pissed that we're talking
about grading. And I'm like, well, that's what
people want to talk about. How dare you talk about the most
popular thing in the sports cardworld?
All right, buddy. Well, you know, it's almost time
for that music to play. Any, any who do you do you want

(48:31):
to announce your upcoming guest on your mother's?
Well, by the way, if you haven'tsubscribed to Sports Card
Clubhouse yet, we're we're we would appreciate if you'd
consider it. We would have just go subscribe.
Don't you know what don't, don'tsay.
We would appreciate if you wouldconsider it.
You had better go subscribe and you should never listen again.

(48:55):
I like that, Yeah. Yeah.
Tough, tough guy over here. You want to talk about your next
guest 'cause last time you talked about your next guest.
Sure. My next guest is a guy named
Cards Max on Twitter and this isso you want to be a dealer
series that I do and cards Max. His name is Max, of course.

(49:16):
I I assume his name is Max. Anyway, he is a very popular
young Twitter sports card dealerand I think he also does card
shows. We're going to get into all
that. And he's also very opinionated
and he's, I would guess 24 yearsold and he has like 35,000

(49:38):
followers on Twitter. And I think he is.
I don't know if popular is the right word, but certainly well
regarded as a Twitter dealer. Well, that sounds interesting.
I'm, I'm anxious to hear it. I listened to your Chris 1 and I

(50:01):
listened to your Adam. I listened to 2/3 of your Adam
Gray one, and I've enjoyed both of them quite a bit.
I need to finish the Adam Gray one, but very good.
I enjoy them very much. Thank you.
All right, here we go. Thanks, Greg.
All right, buddy, Bye.
