Speaker 1 (01:29):
Baseball is joining us as we speak. Mister Baseball, all right.
Speaker 4 (01:37):
I'm doing good, especially if Brandon marsh College Schwarmer and
the rest of the Phillies are gonna hit like that.
So God's doing very good.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
All right.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
So we got a whole bunch of games on the
docket today and tonight. Anything strike your fancy here, mister Baseball.
Speaker 4 (01:56):
Yes, Houston, I see them at minus one ten at
the moment, Sandler Valvez is on the mountain two pointy three,
ar right, But they're going up against uist Gil who
is just starting to get back after an injury. Didn't
go well so far for him this season, so I'm
just gonna keep playing on that. Yankees have been horrible,
downright horrendous actually and Houston's been Okay, not to say
(02:19):
they're playing amazing baseball, but they're playing much better than
the Yankees. And I just want to kind of pick
on Gil coming back and really trying to get his
feet under him as he's, you know, trying to get
ready for the postseason for them because they need pitching
in the worst way. They're only six games above five
hundred now, so they're struggling, and I'm just gonna pick
on Gil at the moment as he's trying to get
(02:39):
himself up to really mid season form. The other one
I'm gonna go with is and this Stay with me
on this one a little bit. The Washington Nationals have
not been good, but I think this is a really
bad number minus one sixty five for a pitcher that's
only making his second start, I think first or second
or second or third start. And Carson wizzen Hunt decent prospect.
(03:02):
He came his way through the miners and was pitching
really well, highly touted prospect coming out of college as well.
But Carson wizen Hunt, I just I don't think, especially
as we see with young pitchers, that they can continue
really good success. It's not like he's been all that
great four point three five ERA one point one six whip.
But he's had he had ten innings under his belt now.
(03:23):
So the more teams seeing, the more they kind of
understand what he does, I think that the better they
are going to do against him. We have seen this
a lot with young pitchers. Nick Abels a really good
example of this. The first couple of games really good.
But then once the command starts to go a little bit,
once team started to figure it out and he started
to get hit really hard. So I want to get
a plus one forty number, I think on a good
(03:45):
side here against the pitcher that probably shouldn't be getting
a minus one sixty five no matter what team he's facing.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
And this is miss San Francisco Giants for the people
that don't know who who this pitcher plays for Washington
at San Francisco, you will take the dog the Washington.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
That's a disgusting I'm gonna go.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
With Yeah, I'm gonna regret that one. But I just
think it's like a good player to kind of get
a plus price and against the pitcher a young picture
that might be you know, might be giving up more
runs than usual against a team like Washington, but the
last one I want to go for here is the
Los Angeles Angels. This is another one where I'm probably
(04:23):
gonna regret this because they're playing the Detroit Tigers. But
we have known the Detroit Tigers aren't playing all that
well lately. Now the Angels are on a third game
losing streak, but Detroit bus Angels like there's not much
difference with the way Detroit's playing at the moment between
the two, and I think they just have the better picture.
You say, Kakuchi's on the mound three point two two
e ra A one point four zero whip is not good.
But on the other side of that is Charlie Morton,
(04:44):
who Detroit acquired five point two zero e ra A
one point five to two whips. He's not having a
great season. There's been flashes of the old Charlie Morton,
but the problem is he is getting older and it
just seems like the miles and the amount of innings
on his arm is really caught up to him. So
I think the Angels here have a good shot to
win this one. They have the pitching advantage plus one fifteen.
(05:07):
Definitely comfortable taking with this with especially as they face
Charlie Morton.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
A second.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
Far be it from me to ever suggest anything about
Johnny Baseball here, But Charlie Morton has pitched great for
two months now. Is e RA as a product of
the first two months when he was got awful?
Speaker 4 (05:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (05:26):
Absolutely, So let's deal in reality here, mister Baseball to
come on this show and act like you know something
about baseball, actually you need to know something about that.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
Oh wow, holding out Johnny.
Speaker 4 (05:39):
Well, john he didn't have a four point nine one
ERA unless than July, so he did have a few
good bucks. That's not to say you're right, Charlie Morton
to get better, but it has. But everything how to
just go to the law of average? And I think
this is this kind of what he is. He's a
high four low five e R.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
A guy is chiming in he wants to make another correction.
Speaker 5 (06:01):
No, he said the Angels had lost three straight. Didn't
they beat the Tigers last night?
Speaker 4 (06:05):
No?
Speaker 2 (06:05):
The Tigers still ended up winning that game.
Speaker 1 (06:06):
Oh they came back and ye yeah the high lights
are you?
Speaker 4 (06:10):
Are you James Connor the gambler where you knock on
the guy's door go, I was ahead at halftime.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
I had to come back here.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
Snowball had a rough album, but they still.
Speaker 5 (06:19):
When I looked at the screen, the Angels were winging
the game. Yeah, you're like, James, did you want me
back here for the start of the second?
Speaker 1 (06:26):
Okay, well, baseball.
Speaker 2 (06:27):
Teams cannot heads their bets like that.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
Man coach Kerrn here telling Johnny Baseball what's happened?
Speaker 4 (06:35):
I know I wasn't I been question a couple of times.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
John, I want to ask you about Trey Lance. Trey Lance, Yes,
what are you asking?
Speaker 4 (06:45):
Fire? Well, now now I'm I'm past Tray Lance. North
Anders is the real deal. So Northanders should be starting,
uh for the Cleveland Browns. There should be no question
about that. Or just had one of the most electric
preseason debuts you've ever seen.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
Being pre season, I'm not, but.
Speaker 4 (07:04):
I will say like with the skills that he has,
he can function as an NFL quarterback. It's just you
know how much he can develop early on. But I
think I imagine but.
Speaker 5 (07:15):
Question right now, I know what the answer is going
to because but if you could take Shador Sanders or
Trey Lance to door, no, no, and.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
That's I think that's the right. Listen, were you when
you were saying that last week.
Speaker 5 (07:29):
I was half fun in with you, but I think
that Lance Trey Lance perhaps could be a player in
this league, maybe even a starter. But just because he
throws a touchdown passing an exhibition game, I don't you
don't you don't like the exhibition.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
For some of the.
Speaker 5 (07:44):
Guys trying to make teams, they are very, very very important.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
I get that part of it.
Speaker 4 (07:50):
But I mean, for example, it was really fun watching
the Eagles wide receivers, the backup guys and I Smith,
Darius Cooper, Johnny Wilson. They come up with big plays.
You know. That was that was really fun to watch
guys develop and see them kind of develop a little bit.
Speaker 1 (08:05):
John.
Speaker 6 (08:06):
Any takeaways from the Eagles preseason game without overreactions.
Speaker 4 (08:14):
Yeah, I mean, it's hard not to overreact to Tanner McKee,
But but this isn't just preseason. This is an accumulation
of preseason games from previous years. Playing in actual regular
season games the Cowboys and Giants, he played extremely well.
I think they were mentioning it on the Eagles broadcast,
and it's very true. I can't remember a time where
(08:34):
Tanner McKey has come in You've seen him play in
like live games, whether it's exhibition or regular season, and
not play well. This guy just consistently makes right decisions,
makes right reads, puts the ball in the right places,
and he makes next level throws. Some of those throws.
I know it's preseason, but it's super high quality and
it's something that he seems like he's doing in practice
(08:55):
as well. That guy's a legit, like he's never going
to be a top end starter or whatever, but those
are That's the kind of guy. If I'm a team
and I'm I'm in the you know, on the bottom
of the league, and I'm just trying to find somebody
to win me some games or anything, Tanner McKey is
the guy. Uh, he could absolutely.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
Are their teams trying to trade for him in the offseason, John,
I mean, did we hear that out there too?
Speaker 4 (09:20):
Yeah, there are some teams that did.
Speaker 1 (09:21):
I don't.
Speaker 4 (09:21):
I don't think Eagles are willing to. McKee wants his
rookie contract goes away if he wants, if he wants
to pursue a starting job like that, it's gonna be
up to him if he want.
Speaker 1 (09:34):
When he was at Stanford, I'm trying. I mean, I
knew I knew the name was he that?
Speaker 5 (09:38):
I know Stanford stunk, but was he like, what did
people think of him?
Speaker 4 (09:44):
He was a he was a highly touted recruit, so
he was he is somebody that that has some type
of pedigree like there are there is I think he
was a I don't know if he was a five seven.
I know he's a pretty high recruit. But the thing
is that you just said Stanford Jeff be like, wasn't shambles?
They have not been good recently to the point out
they were really desperate, I have to say desperate, but
(10:05):
they kind of cleaned house. They brought in Andrew Luck
to be their g N. They brought in Frank Reich
uh to give them at least some sort of leadership,
senior leadership, I guess in that locker room. But yeah,
it's it's more of I think his college production is
more product of what Stamford was and not him. Not
to say that he was the perfect process, but I
think what's that.
Speaker 1 (10:27):
Is Frank Reich got there. I mean, I mean I
missed that.
Speaker 4 (10:31):
Yes he is, Yep, Frank Reraig is out there. Andrew Luck,
I think hired him, so that that.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
Makes the coach.
Speaker 4 (10:39):
Oh I forget until Davidson been away for David Shell's
been away for a good bit, so I forget who
might have been there before Frank Reich.
Speaker 5 (10:49):
They're in the Mountain West or they in the the
sun face.
Speaker 4 (10:54):
I want to take they're in the I want to
say they're in the act.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
Now they are?
Speaker 4 (10:58):
They are?
Speaker 1 (10:59):
It's right that.
Speaker 4 (11:01):
Yeah, Yeah, that's what isn't that? That is the weirdest
thing to say is that it's it's kind of odd.
I don't like it because he is to hear like
Stanford and cal as the Atlanta in the Atlantic Coastal Conference.
It's one of the weirder things.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
I think. I never cal just.
Speaker 3 (11:18):
Made Berkeley, California, across a bay and you're at the
Pacific Ocean.
Speaker 1 (11:22):
It's like, what are we doing?
Speaker 4 (11:23):
Yes, I don't think anywhere close to the Atlantic Coastal.
Speaker 1 (11:27):
No, but yeah, again, the rivalry is big.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
Troy Taylor, now.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
He got got yeah, is now running the show out there.
Speaker 4 (11:40):
He probably would have been could have been like in
a in a in a productive coult career, like a
day two draft pick, because teams love size. He and
look he seems like a smart kid. He's got the
size he's got the arm and there were some good
things on tape, but it's just you couldn't get a
lot of good things on tape if you're the team
around you, and what Stanford was can't really do anything
(12:01):
with you. So that's that was a big problem.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
For him and John. The other.
Speaker 6 (12:07):
Comments coming out of that game, are you worried about
the Eagles secondary or do you chalk it up as
it's Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase.
Speaker 4 (12:16):
Yeah, that one I chalk off as its preseason is
Joe Burrow Jamar Chase. They're not doing anything like. That's
the thing about defense. It's really vanilla defenses. Unless you're
Anthony Richardson, then it's not vanilla and it's really complicated.
But it's mostly vanilla defenses. So they're not doing any
crazy coverages. They're not doing any kind of exotic blitzes
(12:37):
up front. The great thing about Fangio is that he
gives so many different looks, and he gives so many
different looks up front as well to confuse quarterbacks of
the line of scrimmage than in the secondary. So once
once there is like in the back end, like you
do have red blanket ship and possibly Cooper Gene at
times and safety, and you have Quinion Mitchell on the
other side, who's probably going to blanket guys like Jamar Chase.
(13:00):
I think eases the pressure a little bit off of them.
Do they have a problem at cornerback too, Like, yes,
the the the guy opposite of Quinnon Mitchell probably has
not been figured out yet. I am interested in the
guy that they got from Oakland, Oakland, Las Vegas, jeez,
but from the Raiders it seems like he can play.
It just wasn't a fit for what Pete Carroll's defense is,
(13:21):
because you know, they need a certain type of cornerback
to fit their scheme, and he just didn't seem to
I would have seen what he could be like in
Fangio's defense. But yeah, I'm not too worried about it. Again,
it's really vanilla coverages, the vanilla defenses, and Joe Barlin,
no matter who is on the field, is just going
to light you up if you're playing that kind of coverage.
So yeah, I'm not too worried about that yet.
Speaker 3 (13:45):
John, anything else on baseball before we let you get
on out of here, You got anything else?
Speaker 1 (13:52):
We know you're busy. We don't not want to hold
you up for whatever it is no all.
Speaker 4 (13:56):
Good, So I will say I think the Phillies offense,
maybe it's a little dependent on Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper,
but they have been really good since the All Star break.
They are right now if you look at the entirety
of the season, they are top five, the top seven
in a lot of major categories when it comes to hitting.
(14:18):
So I know there was concern about the lineup. There
has been a lot of tough I think that just
happens naturally in one hundred and sixty two games, where
you are going to see some bad games and that's
going to stick out more than the good ones. But
there have been too many instances like last night, where
the offense just explodes for runs. This offense can go,
So I'm not worried about that really. I think the
(14:39):
only worry now is can they just get the pitching right,
which I think it's going to They're giving Zach Wheeler
a little bit of time to kind of just get
some rest and get his arm right. Aaron Nola's going
to be coming back, and I think he's going to
be pitch better than he had been before.
Speaker 2 (14:55):
I think they get David Roberts tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (14:57):
Oh wow, see now stick in the open. Yeah, but
it's just it's really up to pitching that it just
can't kind of correct it and healthy and right. But
the line is there. The line has been there all
year and I think there have been lulls, but that
happens in one hundred and sixty two game season. Now
they are selling that they are consistently able to hit,
(15:17):
and they look at that's a line of that looks
ready for the postseason.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
So here we go, MVP of the National League short
for a factor.
Speaker 1 (15:27):
Here could he beat out the great man?
Speaker 4 (15:29):
It is? So it is actually incredible that we can
have a legitimate conversation about that. College Shuber has narrowed
the gap so much that even the odds have shifted
a little bit. Now tanis still a heavy favorite, but
it's not as heavy as it used to be. So
I will give College Shwerber all the credit in the world.
It is a conversation we can have. I understand the conversations.
(15:50):
But Stani just went out there for floor endings and
at age strikeouts. This guy is that as long as
he pitches, there's just nothing you can do about it,
because he's going to be comparable and in some ways
a little bit better than Kylas. Schwarver is a hitter,
but he's comparable and also going out and getting eight
strikeouts of four innings. Yeah, game over. There's just and that's.
Speaker 2 (16:11):
Not to mention he hit a home run for one
thousand hit in that same game.
Speaker 5 (16:16):
The one the one thing I heard I heard people
say about Kyle and look, obviously we love is it. Well,
you know, Harper missed a lot of time. Whatever you cact.
Otani played without Freeman and Betts for all. Yeah, so
I don't want to hear I know, we look at
things from a Philadelphi. Look, if Schwarber finishes second to
a tany you know what, that's great.
Speaker 1 (16:36):
And if somehow got.
Speaker 4 (16:37):
Him, fine with me, be absolutely.
Speaker 3 (16:39):
I just don't see him not gonna happen the second
in the major leagues and home runs forty one leads
with majors in RBIs with forty five or ninety five,
he's having a phenomenal year. Yeah, exactly. But Otan's ridiculous.
But here's the thing, how about that, And it's.
Speaker 4 (16:53):
Such a fell cold water on the kind of season
Shover's having. It's usually an MVP type year in any year,
but is an MVP type year, and he would win it.
Here's the he's in a league with, and it's it's
just the Dodgers.
Speaker 5 (17:05):
If the Dodgers don't win their division, if somehow the
Padres catch it, whatever, and the Phillies win theirs, then
and the Phillies maybe him a better.
Speaker 1 (17:14):
Record than the Dodgers. That's the one way, or.
Speaker 5 (17:18):
Like fifty six fifty seven, I mean whatever, but that's
the one way I could see people making the legitimate.
Speaker 1 (17:25):
Now, if Otani pitches the.
Speaker 5 (17:26):
Last six weeks, he's gonna be pitching well, if he
pitches like he did the other night, he's gonna be
starting games. Yeah, season, well post Yeah, he's starting, so
he I'm just setting.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
Oh he's pitching game one, so they're getting him.
Speaker 4 (17:41):
He's pitching a lot more in he's going deeper the games.
Speaker 5 (17:44):
And the Phillies aren't going to win the cy Young either,
and it's a shame because they got two pitchers having
a phenomena years.
Speaker 1 (17:50):
But Steens is off the off the mask. Here's some stats.
Speaker 2 (17:54):
I think he's up to six wins now.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
Games e R a one ninety four, which is saying, uh,
Sanchez is fourth in MLB at two thirty six strikeouts
and I forgot strikeouts quality starts. Zach Wheeler and Sanchez
tied for first with Valdez and Webb. It's sixteen each.
(18:17):
And somebody named WU for Seattle, who I don't know
who that is?
Speaker 5 (18:23):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (18:25):
John, John, Hey, John, knew what hospital he was?
Speaker 3 (18:28):
Pats right, Paul Skeen's on fifteen quality starts because they
won't leave him into game long enough.
Speaker 5 (18:33):
That's a that's a fair point, guys, John. The other night,
Skens gave up seven hits. It was his career hot
seven h Now, I know he hasn't pitched in a
wild seven hits.
Speaker 2 (18:47):
In a full season alone.
Speaker 4 (18:49):
Though.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
That's amazing.
Speaker 4 (18:50):
But it's not like he's it's a small sample size now,
like he's he's played a lot of innings in Major
League Baseball for like a couple of couple of years. Now,
the fact that that is the first time he allowed
seven hits in his career, it is easy to give
us seven hits.
Speaker 5 (19:05):
His record at home, the numbers at home are sick.
It's almost like nobody hits him at now. Again, you
know it's Pittsburgh. I mean, you know, probably know.
Speaker 1 (19:15):
But again, it's just if he.
Speaker 5 (19:17):
Played for a really good team, you just wonder what
maybe he would be cape.
Speaker 1 (19:21):
But I don't know.
Speaker 5 (19:21):
Maybe you know, you could say the same thing about
a lot of guys.
Speaker 1 (19:24):
I guess I don't know.
Speaker 3 (19:25):
Yeah, So, John, are you good? And you've said you've
said your piece for the Saturday Morning on here, No,
I have.
Speaker 1 (19:31):
A questions question, I think, So who.
Speaker 5 (19:35):
Is Coastal Carolina starting with? And how far are we
are we away? I'm not Coastal East Carolina? And how
far are we away from that opener?
Speaker 4 (19:44):
So that is going to be against NC State and
it's going to be August thirtieth. So and the thing is,
if you remember, the last game to get en CE
State was the bowl game this past season, and there
was a huge brawl at the end. East Carolina won
it dramatic fashion. It is going to be electric and
Raleigh is not going to be kind for the Pirates.
(20:06):
So it's gonna be a heck of an atmosphere. I
cannot wait for that. College football. We are so close,
We are like this close weeks away from the season
starting August twenty third. So I'm just I can't.
Speaker 1 (20:16):
Temple you mass.
Speaker 2 (20:21):
I have a prediction that's where game day is gonna be.
Speaker 5 (20:23):
Owls will be two and O facing two and O
Oklahoma on.
Speaker 1 (20:29):
The I don't know, fifteen.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
Does that line then come down to thirty five?
Speaker 1 (20:34):
No, it went off to forty three.
Speaker 3 (20:36):
I like Temple, that kid. I've always liked Temple. Oklahoma's
kind of a front. Temple's for real.
Speaker 5 (20:42):
If Oklahoma came in here and lost, they would pull
the program.
Speaker 1 (20:46):
The program goes. That's it, You're done. Because Bud Wilkinson,
Barry Switzer.
Speaker 6 (20:52):
Done Temples the team that breaks Oklahoma football.
Speaker 1 (20:55):
The coach would not be allowed on the chart. He'd
be gone.
Speaker 4 (20:58):
He have to leave.
Speaker 1 (20:59):
Then they have to send him to Siberia.
Speaker 3 (21:01):
Gone is out coach?
Speaker 4 (21:05):
Last one before we go, because I do. We have
talked about Kyle Schwarver and the MVP, like that's not
the show. Hantani is just his thing and it's going
to be hard to beat. But Kyle Schwerver, I think
now is officially on pace for fifty eight. That is
such a significant number history, Yes, exactly. That is such
a significant number in the Phillies history. And I think
(21:28):
the fact that he is even close to chasing it
and could potentially get there or even beat it, that
is more important or I think just more significant to
me in terms of his I know, MVP is a
big deal. It's a really tough thing to beat Otani
on that page and breaks that number. That is a
really significant piece.
Speaker 5 (21:45):
Guy is up for a contract, a huge good contract.
Speaker 3 (21:51):
What timing by him? Good time by Kyle John. I
do have one final question, the l oh gosh, Philadelphia
has fifty points for everybody in the MLS, lead the
Eastern Conference, plus nineteen goal differential best in the MLS.
Speaker 1 (22:09):
Things look good and they bring home the first ever
title the Philadelphia Union. Can it happen?
Speaker 4 (22:17):
It feels like this is as good of a chance
as they've had since that twenty twenty two season, So
I would say like they do have a good chance.
But it's just like that year they I have to
say they got lucky, but really they were able to
get a couple of wins there that were a little
bit lucky. It happened to MLS, It happens in all sports,
(22:40):
like MLS specifically, it can happen. But really, what the Achilles.
Speaker 1 (22:44):
He was is right at the end.
Speaker 4 (22:45):
It's that top end talent. It's getting guys. They're paying
guys a ton of money in the Union are trying
to but they just don't get the kind of quality
of players like that on their roster. So I think
that is still an issue. But they have done a
great job revamping kind of reimagining what a Union team
could look like. I thought it was gonna run out
(23:05):
of steam early in the season after a few wins.
It is not run out of steam and actually their
gaming steam. Uh So it just feels it feels real that, yes,
it is a possibility, but there's just gonna be some
big guns and heavy hitters that are going to be
in their way at times. It's just kind of getting
over that hurdle.
Speaker 3 (23:22):

championship to say that, or the Phillies lost Game six
in the World Series.
Speaker 1 (23:29):

that what we're talking about.

I've told yeah, their schedule I haven't. I haven't checked
that they The MLS schedule is one of the most
ridiculous things in all of sports. But yeah, it's gonna
be around that time.
Speaker 1 (23:45):
Right. Soccer scheduling as a rule is weird.
Speaker 3 (23:48):
You're in a league and you're out of the league

Rights, international windows everything.
Speaker 2 (23:56):
