(00:53):
one eight hundred Gambler, I'm Dick Gerardi back here at
Parks along with Mike Kern, Kyle Ntamaker, John Jansen. Under
the weather, we gave him the day off Saint Joe's
as we suggested last week, as the last team standing
in the Big Five, they will play in the Atlantic
Ten semifinals against George Mason today for a shot to
play tomorrow for a shot to get to the tournament's election.
(01:16):
Sunday is tomorrow. Eagles free agency. We're going to get
into that. A lot of players have left, a few
have come. We'll talk about all of that. College hoops, obviously,
is the theme of the day. Starting at eleven o'clock
in two hours. The first championship game of the day
Bryant minus eight against Maine in the America East. Bryant
(01:38):
is coached by Yes, Phil Martelli. Phil Martelli son is
the head coach at Bryant. TH's wice to get into
the NCAA tournament today. A lot of other Big ten semifinals,
Big East Final tonight. I don't know who saw Saint
John's last night, but it was awesome. They were down
twenty four to nine after eight minutes, After seven minutes,
(02:00):
the next thirty three minutes seventy to thirty nine for
Saint John's over Marquette, as they just wore out the
Golden Eagles. One sad note of the week and a
very sad note. One of the legends in our business
and a good friend of Mike's and mine, John Feinstein
passed away on Thursday. Or tributes all over to John
(02:20):
as there should be. I was going to see him Monday.
He was coming up Mike at the Polaster breakfast on
Monday Coaches Versus Cancer Breakfast. He was going to stay
with our good buddy Dick Waste on Sunday night. Just
a horrible loss for all of us. He knew John,
and Mike. I know you spent tons of time with
him at golf tournaments. Certainly I spent a lot of
(02:40):
time with John at basketball and final fours. Before we
get into all the rest of it, let's chat about
John a little bit.
Speaker 5 (02:49):
I find one of the most fascinating things about John
because he wrote like forty five books.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
He did, which is insane for.
Speaker 5 (02:55):
Somebody that didn't write any Maybe he could have written
one or two if I'd really put my mind to
it at some point. But that's and he wrote like
other books, like their books for teenagers ex for it
wasn't just like sports.
Speaker 4 (03:07):
I was in one of his children's books, you were
a character. I was that character, not a child, but
the children were going to child. That's pretty cool books.
Speaker 5 (03:15):
And his book Season on the Brink obviously changed a
lot of things in journalism because he spent a year
with Bobby Knight change John's life, change it, Yes, as
he would have told you time and his books.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
That wasn't my favorite John book.
Speaker 5 (03:30):
I had others that were some of my that I
really really really enjoyed and something I had a little
more trouble getting into.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
But he was deep. But John was a very complicated person.
Speaker 5 (03:40):
Was he could be so much fun to be around,
and then there's times where you just wanted to hit him,
like like because he could just he was no.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
He was that kind of person.
Speaker 4 (03:47):
Contrarian. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
I remember once on Daily News Live.
Speaker 5 (03:50):
He came on because he was a frequent guest, and
he was trying to tell me something about a seeding
and it might have been the year that Villanova didn't
get the one seed in the East and they wouldn't
want suddenly that he was trying to tell me.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
He said, John, you're wrong, John.
Speaker 4 (04:03):
I said, if.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Villanoven had won their game, they would have been.
Speaker 4 (04:07):
And he always I'm like, John, Yeah, because I had
been telling anyway.
Speaker 5 (04:10):
It's just and I know somebody had told me he'd
been sick or he had gotten I'm trying to remember
how Dick pointed me, but apparently he died suddenly. Correct,
I his brothers had but wait way too soon. I
mean sixty nine years old, right.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (04:23):
Now, the last time I saw John was the night Mike,
you and I were at that Big Five triple header
December of twenty twenty three. That's the last time I
actually spoke with him. I used to talk abou him
more frequently. I just for some reason, I just didn't
chat with him in the last year. But yeah, I
mean John did. He did so many things. I mean,
most recently he was broadcasting a Longwood basketball game. Was
that on television?
Speaker 3 (04:43):
I mean that?
Speaker 4 (04:44):
And he was a professor down there at the school
in Virginia, did UMBC games for years.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
He was the Navy Navy Navy.
Speaker 4 (04:50):
Football color commentator in addition to forty plus books. And
his last column was about Tom Izzo for the Washington Post.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
He still wrote columns.
Speaker 4 (04:58):
And my suspicion is he would have been at the
Atlantic Ten tournament yesterday.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
That he lives around lived around DC. That's what somebody
said that he would have been would have been there.
Speaker 4 (05:08):
That would have been and fran Dumpy were very close.
He's very close with a lot of people. Mike Rzewsky
is one of his best friends. John Is, who's a
Duke graduate, obviously knew the program intimately. And you know,
for me, not not only not only was he great
at what he did, but he was he was great company.
He was just it was just fun to be with.
(05:30):
And you would not have known if you didn't know
that he was like one of these icons in our business.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
If you just talk out with him.
Speaker 4 (05:38):
He was just a regular guy, got to hang out with,
eat with to talk about whatever. It could be politics,
it could be it could be sports. It literally could
have been anything. And he and the thing that stands
out for me is just his passion for it all.
I mean, and he never lost it even at the end.
His last book was about Ivy League football. I mean,
(05:59):
and he would go Patriot League basketball. I mean, he
just went off the I got nobody else want. I
got to go get the Ivy League football.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
I didn't know that.
Speaker 4 (06:07):
Yeah, No, John told me a couple of years ago.
We're going to meet somewhere. He says, well, I'm driving
to Brooklyn and then I'm going to Providence to talk
about the Brown football program. But that and he and
he hated the fly He drove everywhere if he could
within reason, hated airplanes, would drive. I think he used
(06:29):
to drive. John Madden, Yeah, little John Matten. That's a
good announce Tony Corneiser. Yeah, but just again, as Mike said,
certainly complicated, but a wonderful guy.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
Had opinions on everything, everything, Uh, but in a good way. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (06:44):
Just I remember the year he did a book on God.
Speaker 5 (06:47):
He did a couple of books on guy and they
were fantastic, good spoiled because a lot of the books
he wrote about golf I could relate to because I
was at a lot of the things he was writing about.
And there was the year that Tom Watson's Caddy passed away.
He got lous ease, and I remember we were to
Augusta when he passed, and John and I sat because
a lot of people were going over to John to
(07:07):
ask because he had written obviously about him, and he
was just sitting there holding court talking about this guy,
and you could tell he was he was broken.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
Up and put out a really nice statement about John yesterday.
Speaker 4 (07:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:19):
I mean, he just he was. You know, he reminds
me a little bit of wicker Mark.
Speaker 5 (07:24):
Wicker was was a man beyond sports, right, we would
both agree on that question.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
He was great at.
Speaker 4 (07:29):
Sports columnist, is a longtime columnist at our paper and
at the Orange County in California, and wonderful writer, great guy.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (07:36):
I mean, like I said, i've read I have not read. God,
I'm trying to think. Maybe I've read ten to fifteen
of John's books.
Speaker 4 (07:44):
Maybe more A Civil War the Army and meaning civil
as and nice what a Patriot?
Speaker 3 (07:49):
The Patriot was Patriot League.
Speaker 5 (07:52):
Fran Ohannon was in that lot because because he was
at Latte at the time, and but yeah, he he was.
Speaker 3 (07:59):
You know, I remember when Season Season.
Speaker 4 (08:02):
On the Break came out, was it was like it
was like Groundbreak. The only book of its kind sports
book that was similar to that was it was a
great book called Breaks of the Game by the great
David Halberstam.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
He spent a year with the Portland Trail Blaze. Yes,
I read that and doctor Jack Ramsey and Bill Walton.
Was it the year they wanted? It was not? It
was a good year or two after, I believe that's.
Speaker 4 (08:22):
Right when the going And it was fascinating because a
lot of the book was the players complaining about what
other players are making and of course he's making two
hundred and fifty thousand.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
Now it's like laughable, right with what the salaries are.
Speaker 4 (08:34):
But that was that was a grandbreaker because David Halberstam
was a phenomenon god writer and reporter on politics and
everything else. But he decided to spend a year and
and the fact that John ended up getting access to
Bob Knight, which is just it was just about impossible.
And the reason he did he was very friendly with Skryzewsky.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
Of course played for.
Speaker 4 (08:53):
Night at Army and that was the intro and that's
how John got into it. And then of course Knight
famously didn't talk to John for a decade after that
because he actually quoted everything that Knight said, including.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
The F bombs and everything.
Speaker 4 (09:05):
Well then you think that was gonna be I don't know,
and left out a lot of all this shuff that
he could have used that he did.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
The guard Damon Damon Baill was a big part of that.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
I remember that.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
I think they were recruited at the time.
Speaker 4 (09:17):
John would go to high school games in Indiana to
watch Bob Knight watch Damon Bailey play. But it's still
it's still a great book and It's one of the
great sports book that's ever written. John was thirty years
old at the time. Wow took a leave of absence
from the Washington Post, and as he said many times,
that that made his whole career because yeah, instant like, hey,
(09:37):
John Bigstein wants.
Speaker 3 (09:38):
To write a book good.
Speaker 5 (09:39):
I like the one he did about two years later
on the Final The Teams Going, because Raleigh's team I
think that year made the final eight.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
I'm almost sure Rawley was a big part of.
Speaker 4 (09:48):
That book and got access because people trusted him. That's
that's the whole business this. Are they going to trust
you to not include literally everything that you say. There's
very few people I've ever been around. John Chaney was
one that really just didn't care you could quote anything.
Bill Mark Telly was like that just all ultimately would
tell you quote ultimate access. There's very few people like that,
(10:12):
but John was able to get that with myriad subjects.
And you know, more than anything, I'll just miss his
friendship because he was just a wonderful friend to all
of us, anybody that knew him. And again, we were
going to see him on Monday morning, and it's gonna
be kind of it's always been an upbeat affair. The
coaches come and if people are honored, but man, it's
(10:32):
gonna be tough one day without John.
Speaker 5 (10:34):
He's one of those guys. I told you that Jimmy O'Connell,
who was mister A. P. Pasky, He was one of
the great guyle. You would have loved Jimmy O'Connell.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
Classic New York.
Speaker 5 (10:42):
When he walked when you were covering something and he
walked in, your face lit up because you just knew
it was going to be fun. It was going to
be this, it was gonna be That's kind of how
you were with John.
Speaker 4 (10:54):
With John, it just like heye, John's here, Okay, party started. Well,
you got hate John, you get some store, you know.
And he always had story yeah well, and it always
imitated his good friend and good friend Dick was God.
Speaker 3 (11:06):
I forgot about that. He always had some good stuff
that can hold court.
Speaker 4 (11:11):
Yeah, John can definitely hold court. And again to my point,
very complicated guy. Because there were I remember this vividly
where one of the final fours on the Friday afternoon
when they were discussing this is before they came up
with sixty eight.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
It was still at sixty four.
Speaker 4 (11:28):
But at the ennsay was rolling out this all right,
we're gonna have pick a number of ninety, you know what,
whatever stupid number they were coming out with. And they
sent out one of their representatives, a great guy who
painted that he was having to go out there to
try to explain to all the writers on Friday afternoon
that this might be happening.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
Yeah, and it was great. sEH.
Speaker 4 (11:47):
We ran the tournament at the time. It was absolutely
great guy. And I felt so bad for him because
I knew his heart wasn't in it, but they sent
him out there and Feinstein just crushed him at the front.
Just just what went berserve. So Greg walks off the podium.
I walked over to him and he looked at him
and he says, why does he do this to me?
(12:10):
He says, he knows that he has to know that
I don't believe in any of it.
Speaker 6 (12:14):
That sounds like a man that's completely defeated, right, he says,
He says, what is John?
Speaker 4 (12:19):
He's got everything, everything has gone great. Why is he
so angry all the time? But that was what made
him great is his passion. He just he wasn't letting
anybody off the hook if he believed that they were wrong.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
He was gonna tell or he was going to write it,
or both, and.
Speaker 4 (12:35):
I would say, anybod, it's not really a golf person,
per se.
Speaker 5 (12:40):
Go read one of John's golf books. He did maybe
three or four. I'm trying to remember. Good walks. Spoiled
obviously was one of them. There was one he did
one year about the four guys that won the majors.
They were all it was two thousand and three. They
were all like except for Jim Feurd, but they were
all guys.
Speaker 4 (12:55):
You didn't know who they were.
Speaker 5 (12:56):
And I was at all these tournaments, so I was
kind of like, but there as good as his basketball.
Speaker 4 (13:01):
And did he write things like about other sports.
Speaker 5 (13:03):
Besides football or basketball or I'm trying to remember a
good question. I'm sure he don't know. At some point he.
Speaker 4 (13:09):
Hung with the Ravens. He did a year with him
next y Off. I think he certainly did. Trying to
think he left like stuff.
Speaker 5 (13:17):
If he did like a book on like a sport
other than baseball football, not sure, but maybe who knows,
and he does.
Speaker 4 (13:23):
Mike said he did children's bucks novels, mystery novels.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
Very cool.
Speaker 4 (13:28):
How did he find the time. Well that's the issue,
you know. He he obviously didn't sleep, he couldn't have.
He was a swimmer, was his recreation. He actually went
to dooke. He was originally on the swimming team. He
got hurt from New York. Originally his dad I think
was uh Randon Kennedy Center at one point in DC.
Speaker 5 (13:48):
But anyway, I remember he lost a lot of weed
at one point in his life, and swimming was the
yeah that was. You go down to the to the
gym in the hotel and there was John doing like
his fifty laps or whatever the heck he was doing.
Speaker 4 (14:00):
But anyway, tribute to John Fudgestein. A lot of people
have thought it. There's a lot of really good stories
out there. I recommend in the athletic our buddy Brendan
Quinn did a phenomenal job, as he always does. He's
up in New York. My assumption he's up in New
York doing a story on Patino, but he got the call.
Did a really would anybody went through story on Rick?
What's I don't I don't get it. I can't imagine.
(14:20):
All right, So into hoops today, we're into the finals,
semifinals where the field up sixty eight is starting to
take more shape at this point. As I said, the
first game of the day at eleven am, and this
is Phil Martell and his wife Judy are there up
in Rhode Island to support their son Bryant. This is
Philt Junior's second year as the head coach. Bryant minus
(14:42):
eight over Maine. This is the league that Vermont wins
every year. Vermont got eliminated the semifinals. Brian as a
home game, semifinals at the IVY League. I don't know
who's going to be at Brown at these games today.
Yale minus eight and a half over Princeton. That's also
at eleven am.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
Big ten.
Speaker 4 (15:03):
This right, Michigan State minus three and a half over
Wisconsin three, Auburn. These are all one o'clock games, semifinals
of the SEC. Auburn minus four and a half Tennessee.
That game is in Nashville, Big Tens in Indianapolis VCU
nine and a half over Loyal of Chicago. That's semifinals
(15:23):
at the A ten. That's in Washington, d C. Three
point thirty Maryland, which just annihilated Illinois last night minus
four and a half over Michigan, which knocked out Perdue,
which has the look of a team that's gonna get
knocked out in the first round of the tournament. Again Perdue,
they faded badly at the end of the year. That's
in Indianapolis, Florida minus three and a half over Alabama.
Speaker 3 (15:46):
That's going to be a hell of a game.
Speaker 4 (15:47):
That Alabama just crushed Kentucky, which is injury They got
injuries all over the place. I met this saint chose
the sixth seed minus one and a half over the
two seeds Nation today on the Joe's.
Speaker 3 (16:01):
See you in the other half of that bracket, he
still alive.
Speaker 4 (16:04):
VC you nine and a half over Loyal in Chicago.
Speaker 5 (16:06):
So if the Halt gets to the championship and loses,
no chance zero okay, uh six o'clock Big twelve Final.
Speaker 4 (16:16):
BYU played this incredible game in the quarterfinal.
Speaker 3 (16:19):
You're good, I mean.
Speaker 4 (16:20):
Just Ramrod and just got crushed by Houston last night.
BYU is one of my sleeper teams, and the Houston
just torch.
Speaker 6 (16:28):
They are like you said, Houston always has a good defense,
but now they have some offense behind as well.
Speaker 3 (16:33):
They got a real chance to win it all.
Speaker 4 (16:34):
There minus seven and a half over Arizona, which is
having a phenomenal Big Twelve season first year in the
Big Twelve. That's that's an interesting game because that's great
offense against great defense.
Speaker 3 (16:45):
We shall see that games in Kansas City. Six point thirty.
Speaker 4 (16:49):
Can't wait. Saint John's minus six and a half over Creighton.
I don't know who stayed up last NFE, but Creighton
ended up beating Yukon.
Speaker 5 (16:55):
Creighton's own four in Big East finals since they've been
in the league.
Speaker 4 (17:00):
Saint John's is to me the story of the basketball season.
Speaker 3 (17:04):
He's coaching right.
Speaker 4 (17:05):
If he isn't something a series is wrong. I mean,
there's been some great coaching jobs. A guy at Louisville,
We're gonna mention him in a seconds at ridiculous job.
That was a dead dead point he took over. It
went from College of Charleston to Louisville. Saint John's minus
six and a half over Creyton.
Speaker 3 (17:21):
Again.
Speaker 4 (17:21):
I don't know who got a chance to watch the
game last night. Uh, but they're losing twenty four to nine,
and they interviewed Rick during the game. Are you concerned?
He said, no, I'm not concerned. They win.
Speaker 3 (17:36):
By seventeen. Yeah, just going away first.
Speaker 4 (17:38):
I love that.
Speaker 3 (17:39):
Are you concerned? Yeah, it's over yah done?
Speaker 4 (17:42):
Yeah, no, seventy to thirty nine in the last thirty
three minutes.
Speaker 3 (17:47):
What do you what do you expect him to say?
Speaker 4 (17:49):
Marquette, which could not miss for seven minutes, was so
dead by the end of the game. Their legs couldn't move,
they couldn't make a layup, they couldn't make a jump shot.
I'll tell you, Saint Johnson is starting to remind me
of without the offensive firepower, they look like Connecticut the
last two years. They just wear teams out. Now, I'm
not telling you they're gonna win like Connecticut because they
(18:11):
do have some real flaws.
Speaker 3 (18:13):
They don't shoot free throws.
Speaker 4 (18:14):
Well, one of their best players of fifty seven percent
free throw shooter a Kadari Richmond. That's concerning. Uh, it's
also concerning. They don't shoot threes. But whoever beats them,
if anybody does, they better play great because Saint John's.
Speaker 3 (18:27):
Will there great. I agree with everything you say.
Speaker 5 (18:29):
They are going to win their first two games because
they're playing in Providence.
Speaker 4 (18:32):
Yeah they will. Now they're going to play in Newark,
assuming they state. Yeah, I get it. New York's good too,
as in the state East, Duke will be the one
in the East. The question is will Saint Johns be
the two in the East or will they ship them
out so far that it'll be where they rank them.
And you know what the geography is Tennessee. You know,
one of those set teams could be too.
Speaker 3 (18:52):
I think Rick would probably say, put me in Newark,
give me Duke.
Speaker 5 (18:54):
Yeah, I he'd be happy to do whatever, especially if
Cooper flag is limping.
Speaker 3 (18:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (18:59):
The other thing, we're gonna get to that in a second.
I don't know who saw the USC dude ending it
last night, but that was insane.
Speaker 3 (19:05):
What was it a good call? I didn't see it. Yes, unfortunately.
Speaker 4 (19:07):
Okay, so Saint John's and watching them last night, so again,
they don't shoot threes very well last night. Marquette is undersized,
so what did they do? They just throw it into
their man Zubieta for their center. He has a career
high thirty three. He just crushed his transfer right from
Kansas where he couldn't get on a court.
Speaker 3 (19:26):
How's Kansas doing? But not that well?
Speaker 4 (19:28):
No eliminated in the quarterfinals in Kansas City. So Rick
all he does is all right, what's the other team's problem,
we'll exploit it. Last night it was zoobietri for had
a career high thirty three.
Speaker 3 (19:40):
Unguardable zone Mann men, it didn't matter.
Speaker 4 (19:43):
They just ran roughshot. And what what I love about
when I watched them and this is this is me.
Now I'm a baseline out of bounds place. I don't
know how many he's got, but they all work perfectly
for Williams. Sideline out of bounds. They were out of
play last night I've never seen before. And at four
I got a layoff after it was just it was awesome.
I mean it's like a scream smarting coach, of course,
(20:08):
and Shaka.
Speaker 3 (20:09):
Had to look at the last five minutes like I
can do nothing.
Speaker 4 (20:12):
You know who?
Speaker 5 (20:12):
Patino reminds me of what you just said about him.
Speaker 4 (20:15):
Belichick.
Speaker 3 (20:16):
Yeah, now that's right.
Speaker 4 (20:17):
Belichick would look at the other team and say, okay,
what are we going to do. We're gonna take whatever,
like yeah, and that Rick just says, Okay, I got
my flaws. But and their defense is just overwhelming. It
reminds me of all of his great teams without shooting.
Speaker 3 (20:35):
That's the one thing they lack. But you know what, Mike,
you know what they just don't shoot.
Speaker 4 (20:41):
It's the drive to the best four for dunk it.
Four final fours with four different teams. Am I missing
the number? That's right?
Speaker 5 (20:47):
So this may be three three three, and this would
be four if if he would be asking a lot.
Speaker 4 (20:53):
You know that he won two with two different teams.
That's he's the only coach that went with two different teams.
Won with the teams that like hate each other. Yeah,
like the mortal enemies. Yeah, uh so we got we
got that in the final game ACC title game, Duke
minus five and a half over Louisville. And for the people
that didn't see it last night, no Cooper flag for Duke.
(21:16):
He's not gonna play in this game either. What now?
Speaker 3 (21:18):
What's the point they're getting him ready for next week?
I bet you Duke don't play it on Friday. Yeah,
I'm out. Oh yeah, They'll give him all the time,
but they're gonna be in Raleigh. It's a question whether
raleighs Thursday or Friday.
Speaker 4 (21:28):
Yeah. I don't know the answer to that. Off the
top of my head. I could find out, but whatever,
So the other guy got hurt too, correct they were
missing two of their best players last night. So they're
had in North Carolina by twenty four games over. North
Carolina is dead. They're they're yesterday's news. Well here comes
North Carolina. They're coming back, They're coming back. They finally
they got they got it down in two and they
get found.
Speaker 3 (21:47):
They're shooting too. They're down by one.
Speaker 4 (21:49):
I'm sorry, they're shooting two, down by one with like
three seconds left. Guy bricks the first, shoots the second.
As he's getting ready to shoot at one of his
teammates steps in the lane and was.
Speaker 3 (22:00):
So obvious they didn't have a choice but to call it.
Speaker 4 (22:02):
He made the shot. Uh, they fouled Duke. Duke makes
two free throws. North Galada misses at the buzzer.
Speaker 3 (22:09):
Brutal.
Speaker 5 (22:09):
Remember remember the year that happened to change nineteen eighty
nine or ninety at the plus plus Shapiro went, he
went berser And it wasn't like that.
Speaker 4 (22:20):
It was like a sort of in the land. It's
not the call you caught you make last night. They
didn't have a choice. It was just too obvious that
I felt so bad for the kid. They because they
kept showing the kid after the guy I don't even
know his name. Did you see the end of the
Creton game.
Speaker 3 (22:35):
Brutal did when the guy went in and dunked it.
I didn't see it. That just don't do it.
Speaker 4 (22:40):
And he said afterwards, I made a mistake for the
people who didn't know. Creighton's got the game against yukon one.
They throw the ball at guy dunks it. He dribbled
the length at your court, dribb hurley foul right, everybody
knows that, and just you just stopped playing. But he
got excited, and he said after the game, I got excited.
Speaker 5 (22:58):
The Creighton coach apologized for of course, because Greg's yeah,
Greg's fine, but.
Speaker 4 (23:03):
Just unfortun But he's a kid. He is a kid.
It's fine. He was excited. He was at the biggest
fal Yes. So, and it's Connecticut. You know, you're beating
the two times defending champs, and you're in the finals.
You're in Madison Square Garden and look, I like, I
would like Saint John's under any circumstance.
Speaker 3 (23:19):
But go back at night, Creighton need a double overtime
to beat the Paul.
Speaker 4 (23:23):
They'd beaten Saint johnas and in the garden after playing
the late game again, it ain't happening.
Speaker 3 (23:29):
Sorry, Paul stinks that. Well, there is that the pot
the game what they just didn't know how to win.
Speaker 4 (23:35):
Because they're in the Paul.
Speaker 3 (23:36):
They couldn't believe they were in that situation. It's like,
what are we doing? Why are we here?
Speaker 4 (23:41):
We were stopping thought You mentioned Briant and I wasn't aware. Yeah, Phil,
mart tell you how many guys from Philadelphia sons of
coaches we because you'll mention the team and the first
thing you say, yeah, well Joe blows scots Son who
is like an assistant on the team, and they're absolutely
(24:02):
with Joe Milwick soon was on the Penn stare for us. Yeah,
so yeah, we also need to mention Steve Donnaue, our
good friend sadly lost good.
Speaker 3 (24:10):
Job on Monday. The Penn job is not what the
Penn job used to be.
Speaker 4 (24:15):
The support isn't there from the administration like it once
was for basketball, like when Dump was the coach and
you could if you asked, and a guy who was
capable of doing the work, you could get him in school.
Speaker 3 (24:26):
Now it's much harder to do that. It's not a level.
Speaker 4 (24:29):
Their football team is suffering too, right, it's not a
level playing field because they've made a decision, like like
Galeen Harvard made a decision they wanted to compete. So
they're getting guys into school that Penn can't get into school.
And I don't care who you are, where you are,
and you can't keep losing guys like the other schools
that are going to start for you.
Speaker 3 (24:47):
And we don't know much about the little sal guy.
I don't know anything. Good luck to him.
Speaker 4 (24:52):
I push him well, he's in a very tough spot.
Fran Dumpy's final game, we certainly made pay tribute to
dumb phenomenon. I'm back for his team against Sant Jose.
They were dead, the game was over, and the next
thing you know, they're down like three.
Speaker 5 (25:06):
Billy Lang when they when they hug each other or whatever,
like Jilly put his head on his shoulder. I don't
know what Billy was saying. But yeah, here's what college
sports are to me. Why why I have a tough
time in So Drexel loses in I don't know, quarterfinals.
Speaker 4 (25:21):
I think.
Speaker 5 (25:23):
Two hours later or whatever, two or better players are
in the transfer. Yeah, and look, Zach's good. Yeah, we
know Zach and I haven't been around him in a while.
But okay, how can you coach teams like them?
Speaker 3 (25:34):
Possible?
Speaker 4 (25:35):
I mean his best player from last year's team, So,
I mean he did a great job recruiting.
Speaker 3 (25:40):
Here's the problem.
Speaker 4 (25:41):
If you do a good job recruiting, yeah, you might
have a good year, but it ain't gonna last.
Speaker 3 (25:46):
And if you don't do a good job recruiting, you
stink and you're getting you know.
Speaker 5 (25:49):
What the future is, it's not I'm not I'm not
recruiting high school players absolutely, And now, how much is
it going to change, Dick when this rule comes in
next year? Bet the schools can actually pay like some
schools have opted in. Right, Temple's one of them.
Speaker 4 (26:04):
I believe that.
Speaker 5 (26:06):
And your guy, I mean got he. I mean he
lost his best player for what the last seven eight
games mash.
Speaker 4 (26:10):
Burns didn't play correct, Adam Fisher, and I thought Temple
will had a chance to be minimum of into semi
finals as the American But they lose their best player,
the second leading scorer in the country.
Speaker 3 (26:21):
What are you gonna do?
Speaker 4 (26:22):
There's nothing, there's nothing to do about it. And they
they lost to a team Tulsa that they certainly would
how is that rule going to change? Like, so the
school so Temple will pay players directly instead of like
they're getting this settlement this that came through the courts.
So yeah, that that'll change a little bit. But you
know what, Mike, they're essentially paying them directly now right,
(26:42):
I got you. And it's going to come down to,
like the schools decide, like let's say Penn State they
have one hundred let's let's say the number. What let's
say it's twenty five million. Well, eighty five percent of
that's going to football players and then maybe ten to
men's basketball and the rest for everybody. But does this
mean that the nil won't apply to Penn State anymore?
Speaker 1 (27:02):
There?
Speaker 4 (27:02):
They're also also so in additions, so they're going to
have money and money correct, Oh correct, Oh yeah, that's
how it's gonna work. Okay, And then it's gonna come
down to like an I all part of it. Like
Saint John's, for instance, has Micropoli, a very prominent horse
hunner is Saint John's grad who's.
Speaker 3 (27:20):
Bankrolling the whole thing.
Speaker 4 (27:21):
He's been bankrolling if you need players, and Rickzelon said,
I'm not recruiting high school players.
Speaker 3 (27:26):
I don't want high school players. They're not going to
help me.
Speaker 4 (27:29):
I want guys that have been in college for two
or three years that I see what they can do
in college, and then I can't.
Speaker 5 (27:35):
They changing another rule too, where JUCO players won't be
penalized for the years they spend at JUCO.
Speaker 4 (27:41):
You get an ext I believe you get at least
an extra year. But the rules keep changing it every
fifteen minutes, so it's hard to get existing.
Speaker 3 (27:48):
So we can get kids playing seven years yeah maybe.
Speaker 4 (27:51):
Oh sure, you could have twenty five year olds playing
against seventeen year olds.
Speaker 3 (27:54):
Yeah, which is also madness.
Speaker 4 (27:56):
But again, that's that's that's the fault of the NCAA,
which had a chance to do something about it, and
just ignore it. Just reminds me of so the NCAA
could have done something maybe ten years ago, just put it.
That's right.
Speaker 5 (28:06):
Newspapers could have done something back in the nineties, boxing
horse right, So to say, okay, there's a lot of
this is the future, and then by the time we
caught up to the future, it was too late.
Speaker 4 (28:19):
That's exactly right, Mike. That's exactly what's happened at college
sports now. It's it's better for players than absolutely, which
is always the.
Speaker 3 (28:26):
Way it should have been. But there should be some
kind of a system. Right now, it's just chaos.
Speaker 6 (28:32):
And you think about what coaching has never been more
difficult in the college game, that it's three hundred and.
Speaker 5 (28:37):
Sixty five days a year your face to be doing
is That's why they have general managers now, because these
guys are But think about this, there was a thing.
I don't think this has any chance to become but
Cooper Flag Let's just say for sake, Rogan dude could
come up with enough money, three million whatever, Hey, Coop
stay around for another year.
Speaker 3 (28:53):
It might be more than he's making on his.
Speaker 5 (28:54):
NBA contract As a rule, I mean I probably not,
but because he'd be number one pick. But again, this
is what players now. They might say, Hey, wasn't there
a couple of college players think that actually stayed in
school because they weren't going to be great pro players
and hundred dicats.
Speaker 4 (29:09):
It's the perfect that's the guy I was staying in
college forever if he could. He's not an NBA player,
I mean he's making He went from Michigan to Kansas,
made a ton of money, and I'm sure made even
more of this.
Speaker 3 (29:18):
You're a good friend. Yeah, man, that's the market. It's
the market.
Speaker 4 (29:22):
It's just it's a it's a silly system because it's
basically baseball with no Baseball has something like the small
market teams get some money for the big market teams.
This is nothing.
Speaker 3 (29:34):
You have no chance.
Speaker 4 (29:35):
If you're the little guy in college sports, you have
zero Who won a college football championship? Who spent the
most money? State? Who was in the national title game?
Notre Dame, this is Penn State was in the semifinals.
Rockets like the temples of the world, never had much
of a chance.
Speaker 3 (29:54):
Now they have no change. Only ask you one real
quick question because it's on my mind.
Speaker 5 (29:59):
What happened to camp into this year? Yeah, I mean
if they were number one? Yeah, I don't mean they
have to be number one the whole year. You know,
they had like you said, Dickerson went there, right, I
mean they had a good team. Obviously they wouldn't have
been ranked number one.
Speaker 1 (30:10):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (30:10):
Yeah, they just turned out that they just weren't They
just weren't good. They're good, Yeah, they were just over. Basically,
they said, are this guy's back, this guy's back, this
guy's coming.
Speaker 3 (30:19):
This guy's coming. They're gonna be great, And it just
never really worked.
Speaker 4 (30:22):
And it's unusual because obviously Bill self has always had
really really good This is not me. They're not even
in the top twenty five, right, Yeah, they're not very good.
I mean, they'll be in the tournament, but not for long.
I wouldn't say they don't do much. This is the
time of year and we won't be on till Saturday,
so we'll miss the first round and wherever people are
getting seated and all that kind of stuff.
Speaker 5 (30:42):
I try to sit here and think of which teams
do I like? Yeah, because I don't know where they're
going to be seated? Sure, which teams don't I like?
Speaker 4 (30:49):
I come up with a list of and this year
my problem is there's about eight to ten teams that
I really like, Like, like, you know, Houston, I like Florida, all.
What's the other team in yes, Alabama, sure Duke obviously
before Duke I got it, and on you know, you
get down the line, there's some Saint John's, yes, and
(31:11):
then you got to see what kind of hand they
get dealt on select.
Speaker 5 (31:14):
But the thing is I like Houston and Auburn, and
they'll get seated at one two in the in the
South or something.
Speaker 4 (31:18):
Now, Houston and Auburn are both one seeds. Oh, that's right, right,
the four one seeds are already done. It's Duke Houston, Auburn,
and Florida.
Speaker 3 (31:25):
That's it. There's no, there's no.
Speaker 4 (31:27):
And the twos would be Alabama, Tennessee, Saint John's, some
maybe Michigan State, some of the in that.
Speaker 3 (31:36):
So Saint John's can't do anything to improve. It's not
gonna get up to a one. But they're not getting
to a one.
Speaker 4 (31:41):
They could drop to a three they lose tonight, they'd
be a three if they win the night and they're
not a two.
Speaker 3 (31:45):
And there's really not a big difference between a tour
that's kind of a route, what color jersey you wear,
and the elite eight.
Speaker 4 (31:50):
And you know you're not big on Michigan State, right,
I'm not.
Speaker 3 (31:53):
I'm not big on the big ten.
Speaker 4 (31:54):
On the big ten, Tom is I should They should
put him back in the Hall of Fame. They went
seventeen and three. He's got a team of role players
and a great freshman at Jason Richards and Jason Richards
and Sun They there's no way, they're as good as
these other teams we mentioned. But he's gonna get a
high seed and they're not a locked to win the
(32:15):
Big Time Tom And he says right, and he look
it looked like the game, frankly had passed him by.
Speaker 3 (32:22):
His teams have been pretty mediocre for the last four years.
Speaker 4 (32:25):
Well, they've been the best team in the Big.
Speaker 3 (32:27):
Ten all year long.
Speaker 4 (32:28):
I think a lot of that has to do with
the Big Ten's not very good, right, I think that.
I don't think Big ten has been any good for
five years. But so major credit the coaches.
Speaker 3 (32:36):
I told you what.
Speaker 5 (32:37):
Twenty five years ago, he wins a title in his
second year and they played Temple to This wasn't his
second year, but I thought I read it it was
his second, but it was pretty early.
Speaker 3 (32:47):
Second year.
Speaker 4 (32:48):
He beats Temple in the final eight and Temple game
a great game, and I don't know who.
Speaker 5 (32:52):
And he's made eight final fours or seven final fours
since then. Ye if I said that was going to
be his like only not? Yeah, that just didn't sound right.
Speaker 3 (33:01):
It seems unlikely.
Speaker 4 (33:03):
You know, I will say this, Mike, he's never had
the best team since. No, you're no you're act.
Speaker 3 (33:07):
No time do you say, oh my god, he lost it.
He shouldn't lit you remember you told me the story
a long time ago.
Speaker 5 (33:12):
He was the guy that got burnt by recruiting one
and done's like back in two thousand and one two.
Speaker 3 (33:17):
It's some of his best guys like left right now.
Speaker 4 (33:19):
The first year Jason Richardson, they brought the shirt. The
first year I did Penn State basketball. While I was
on the road that was here, Illinois had their great
team with Bruce Weber. I would interview coaches for the
paper and I got is though up in State College
at the Midney line in and he was bemoaning what
was happening, Like he would say, yeah, this guy called me.
He says, yeah, coach, I'm coming back. I'm coming back.
(33:40):
And then a week later he's gone. And this is
seventeen eighteen years correct, twenty one years ago, Okay, I
mean so yeah, And that's just how much has changed
even now.
Speaker 3 (33:49):
And Tom's not into the transfer portal, He's not into
all this stuff. He's the last. He's the last of
the Jay Wright uh Roy Williams.
Speaker 5 (33:57):
And he could have taken the Cavs chow yeh Beeline
got it was I think maybe when I don't.
Speaker 3 (34:04):
Know earlier than that, Thoms a dinosaur.
Speaker 4 (34:07):
And interestingly enough, John Stein's is John Feinstein's last column
for the Washington Post was on Thomas Wow.
Speaker 5 (34:15):
One of the great things when when Temple played real
quick because I know you got to go to break yep,
when Temple played them in the two thousand and one
final way Temple and Temple was in the game right
to the end, YEP.
Speaker 3 (34:25):
And I said Temple had the same.
Speaker 4 (34:27):
Team as Michigan State, only not as good, but that
they played Michigan State played that tough.
Speaker 5 (34:33):
Is used to have that drill. We would throw the
ball up on the backboards and have ten guys go
get They actually have them in helmets, and.
Speaker 3 (34:41):
You can't do that. That's against it. That's abuseful team.
Speaker 4 (34:45):
I think you mentioned that in the column that John wrote.
Speaker 6 (34:47):
I believe that's the Michigan State would probably be like
what the fourth or fifth best team in the SEC.
Speaker 4 (34:52):
You think, if if that, if that, if that, it's
just a totally different but again major credit. Yeah, are
they a.
Speaker 3 (34:59):
Lot like tennis See because Tennessee, pleas Lake.
Speaker 4 (35:01):
Slow similar similar. I would like to see some combination
of Saint John's Houston and Michigan State play Michigan State.
Can't you think Saint John's can't shoot Michigan State's under
thirty percent from three? Really? But they just beat the
little host this year very much better. They got guys
that can actually shoot. I think I'm rooting for You're dangerous.
Speaker 3 (35:21):
Man early last years, two years ago, very dangerous. You'd
be listening.
Speaker 4 (35:25):
You are listening.

Mike karn con on a maker, John Jansen, Little under
the weather. Hope we'll get John back next week. All right,
let's start with at the top of the and where
after we get off the air. Mike Bryant minus eight
over Main. None of them can name a player on
either team. This is the title game, they win, Phil Martin,
(37:05):
they're at home, correct in Rhode Island. Bryant minus a
ever Main, which upset Vermont to get to the final game.
Speaker 5 (37:14):
I can't go, I can't go. Oh, I'll put this way.
I don't know about the points, bread, just winning the game.
They are going to the tournament and Phil will be
a thinking where it's Thursday or for would they be
a dating game?
Speaker 3 (37:27):
They could be.
Speaker 4 (37:27):
Okay wherever they are right, the Martelli's are there and
you know what, good for them and you'll and if
you watch it on a ESPN or the Deuce or

and Judy Martelli fifty times.
Speaker 3 (37:39):
I say sixty six, see I say the overall, I'll
go fifty. Can you imagine, I.
Speaker 4 (37:44):
Said Philip a text yesterday, wish it him? Well?
Speaker 3 (37:46):
Can you imagine if they win, what that hug is
going to be like after that game? It'll be awesome.
Speaker 4 (37:53):
That's a you know, Philip for the people that don't know,
played for his dad at St.
Speaker 3 (37:57):
Jose.
Speaker 4 (37:57):
He graduated No. Three, one of my all time favorite people.
Just a great guy. For some rate.
Speaker 3 (38:04):
I don't know what happened to the head coach.
Speaker 4 (38:05):
Something happened before last season where he got fired like
literally the day before the season started and the next
thing you know, Phil juniors coach and Brian and he's
had two really good I'm gonna ask you, dumb questions,
and because I think that would be unusual.
Speaker 3 (38:19):
Phil's Phil's father. Phil's father has also passed. Right, That's correct.
He was one of the He was one of the great.
Speaker 5 (38:26):
And I can only imagine what he would have said
if he were around that question to be there, because
he would have been up there right if he if he,
if health wise he could.
Speaker 4 (38:35):
Yes, Phil's dad was it every sage, every game and
every game the entire time. Is Phil was the There
was Phil, Phil and Phil, all three of them. Man,
so wonderful? Is this the son? Who was it?
Speaker 3 (38:47):
Give me because I get there was more.
Speaker 4 (38:49):
Than one, right, Jimmy Martelly's assistant at Penn State. Okay
with Michael just the film with the baby face. I remember, Yes,
he was only you'll see him he he Mike, I
Wentn't I see him for a year?
Speaker 3 (39:04):
Great?
Speaker 1 (39:04):
Like?
Speaker 4 (39:04):
How you doing? Is he a great?
Speaker 3 (39:06):
And we sit and talked for five minutes.
Speaker 4 (39:07):
Great. I'm gonna give you a game today. My first
pick of the Princeton getting eight and a half against
Yale at Brown. I like Princeton in this game. This
seems like a big number to me. Yeah, No, Yale's
the best team. There's no argument here.
Speaker 3 (39:20):
Actually you're spot on because it's down to seven.
Speaker 4 (39:22):
Whoaah yeah, big movement. That was eight and a half
like an hour ago.
Speaker 3 (39:26):
I love these games are at brown?
Speaker 4 (39:28):
Is that plane correct? So it's you know, there'll be more.
Yale's brown playing is brown did not make brown than
I make it, did not. Unfortunately, my buddy Mike Martin
remember last.
Speaker 3 (39:36):
Year, Oh god, oh, the worst loss ever. Brutal. Oh
my god, I was crying. Yeah, that was horrible. I
was watching that a horse racing tournament that was brutal. Alright,
on to.
Speaker 4 (39:50):
Big ten Michigan State minus three and a half over Wisconsin.
Speaker 3 (39:55):
Big ten semifinals, one o'clock.
Speaker 4 (39:58):
Michigan State's on a roll, Wisconsin at nineteen threes against
UC I think it was nineteen yesterday, and Nick Corona
was interviewed after and mixes, Well, what was that say?
Speaker 3 (40:10):
Bad matchop?
Speaker 4 (40:10):
Yeah, just said bad match up. They had bigs that
can shoot threes. We can't go out and guard them.
We knew we had problems that they made him. And
then then he told his team, whatever you do, don't
get in a three point shooting contest.
Speaker 3 (40:24):
Well they did. They both shot thirty.
Speaker 4 (40:27):
UCLA made nine Wisconsin La shot the floor right, and
not a.
Speaker 3 (40:33):
Good idea to try to shoot with Wisconsin.
Speaker 4 (40:35):
A week ago, I'm chatting with you guys for Madison,
where bench State had not won in thirty years, had
never won in the Coal Center. They were down thirteen
with three to go in the first and they blow
wiscon walked them off the court in the second air.
Speaker 3 (40:52):
What did that mean in the big picture for Wisconsin?
Speaker 4 (40:55):
Nothing? As it turned out. Big Who's the coaching was
Greg Guards Bo.
Speaker 6 (41:02):
Bryant's tradition, if Wisconsin shoots sixty from three, you like
for the entire tournament, I'm picking them to win it all.
Speaker 4 (41:09):
So Wisconsin's the best free throw shooting team in a
country and one of the best three points Did they
break the record?
Speaker 3 (41:16):
Did they actually? I think villanov is going to hold
the record. They've actually come back down to earth.
Speaker 4 (41:20):
A little later?
Speaker 3 (41:21):
Did the NCAA games count? Like every game? Every Gameunt
Michigan State can't.
Speaker 4 (41:25):
Shoot threes, They're terrible, They're under thirty percent. But they
come at you in waves, they play ten guys, they
wear you out.
Speaker 3 (41:35):
What are we thinking? Mizzo?
Speaker 4 (41:37):
Greg Guard very opposite stylistic game today You know the
teams obviously, I am an Iszo guy. I just understand
I always you know, I think they can make a
run this year. I know you don't.
Speaker 5 (41:49):
And I'm not saying final four. Yeah, I mean when
couple you'll get to the second week.
Speaker 4 (41:53):
Hey, look, I'm rooting for him. Dana Yell Sun is
the manager Carrot. Oh, I know a lot of people
out there that's great.
Speaker 3 (41:59):
So yeah.
Speaker 5 (42:00):
But and but again, my take on it is Wisconsin
can't shoot that way again. You wouldn't think, I mean,
if they do, right said God, bless the rush. I
think and three and a haitch not a good number
because you know that game could go. I would take
Michigan State.
Speaker 6 (42:16):
Just I'm gonna take Michigan State just because to your point,
Wisconsin can't shoot like that again, and and and typically
when they could, they could, I guess. But that goes
to say you think after a game like that, they're
gonna come in and try and replicate that early on.
And uh to Dick, that's where Michigan State attacks and
is going to beat them up early.
Speaker 3 (42:33):
And I think it's gonna be hard. We see what
they did when they played each other. I mean, I
don't know when they would have played.
Speaker 4 (42:39):
I don't. They probably only played once, right, because anymore,
that's all anybody. They play it on March second, they
played two weeks ago.
Speaker 6 (42:45):
Michigan State won seventy one sixty two at Michigan State
at Michigan State.
Speaker 3 (42:50):
Yeah that's yeah. Okay, So sixty two points. I don't
love I don't love it because Michigan and you know
what Wisconsin shot from three five.
Speaker 4 (43:00):
Yeah, they were in the middle of a terror. They
had like a four game stretcher. They didn't make a
shot fifteen percent. This game means nothing to Michigan State
other than they looked at trophy.
Speaker 3 (43:09):
They're trying to get a two seats. Oh ude, this
is a semi final, correct, last they do the finals tomorrow.
That's Maryland, Michigan. This game does mean something for me, absolutely, okay, yeah,
no question. Okay.
Speaker 4 (43:19):
So Wisconsin nine, as Child just said, nineteen of thirty
two last night, Yeah, I mean, seriously.
Speaker 5 (43:26):
I see I see this as a really close game,
like a four or five point game.
Speaker 3 (43:30):
Michigan State covers. They ain't cover him by much. Okay,
that's why I'm leary of laying three to here.
Speaker 4 (43:36):
And that's the first game Wisconsin has shot well, it's interesting.
Like again, I saw Mick Cronin say they had a
problem and UCLA's got a couple of big guys.
Speaker 3 (43:43):
There's no way in Wisconsin has big guys that can
shoot threes. The problem they always do. That's true.
Speaker 4 (43:49):
The problem for Michigan State is they got big guys,
so you really don't want covering three point shooters. So
I see some of the same issues you Seeli is
a great defensive team, similar to Michigan State. I give
Wisconsin a real shotter. Sure, no, I do too.
Speaker 3 (44:06):
That's how I'll probably take the point.
Speaker 6 (44:08):
So that's something to look out for in the tournament.
If you you know you're playing a smaller, faster team,
Michigan State's gonna be forced to pull their big men out.
Speaker 4 (44:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (44:16):
I'll tell you the analogy I would give in it.
Speaker 4 (44:18):
It's what if you remember very well when we were
talking about the NBA Finals last year, Yeah, Dallas got
the dream matchup with Minnesota because Minnesota had all those
big guys. Well, now all of a sudden, there's there
got big guys got to go out and guard at
the three point light.
Speaker 3 (44:31):
I couldn't do it.
Speaker 5 (44:32):
And they had no chance against them. Some Michigan State
beat you most of the time. Yeah, I'll tough you.
That's that's that's what tom is.
Speaker 4 (44:39):
Those teams do offensive rebounds, defense just no, they're they're
defenses buddies. They're they're right up and and they put again.
The only star is Jace Richardson is a star. Uh
it was a freshman, came off the bench for like
twenty games, has now been starting. He's one and could be.
But the rest of their guys are just guys. But
(45:00):
thirteen and but I give Wisconsin a shot in this game.
But having seen them.
Speaker 3 (45:06):
Live last week, Penn State beat them up by the
end of the Ye're gonna put that game out of
your No, I get it, but I saw it.
Speaker 4 (45:13):
But by the end of the game, if they've gone
on ten more minutes, Penn State would have won by third.
Speaker 3 (45:17):
But like you said, Penn State probably could have been
that team a lot this.
Speaker 4 (45:21):
Year, they just weren't. Now they were two games decided
the last minute. So it's just just a weird situation.
So anyway, that's that's a semi final. The other semifinal,
Maryland minus four and a half of Michigan.
Speaker 3 (45:34):
Michigan.
Speaker 4 (45:35):
Michigan's think now they had really faded at the end
of the year, I mean faith after winning like eleven
games decided by free or less.
Speaker 3 (45:44):
Well, they beat Purdue last night, which is also stakes,
which is also free. At the end of the season.
Speaker 4 (45:49):
It does tell you something that Braden Smith was the
player of the year in the Big Ten. And I
don't have a real problem with it. To me, he's
just a guy, a really good college player. Matt Painter
I said he's going to be a ten year pro.
I love Matt Painter, but just zero chance that's happened. Well,
he could be at the end of the bench for
ten years. I mean, yeah, No, I don't know, I
(46:10):
know him.
Speaker 3 (46:11):
I don't see it.
Speaker 4 (46:12):
You know, very good college player's got another got this
great young Derek Queen, the freshman from Baltimore who played
at Saint Francis, the same place as ace Ball.
Speaker 3 (46:22):
Was he like the sixth pick in the draft, nail
bet or so. I don't know where he is.
Speaker 4 (46:25):
I saw I saw him moving up and he's a freshman.
He's a freshman. I saw him live two weeks ago.
I was I was overwhelmed by his smarts and the
understanding of the game. I was not overwhelmed by his athleticism.
I do not think he has NBA athleticism. That would
be my biggest concern on watching him. But he's a
hell of a college is going to be on the
sickers next year and he probably will have a long
(46:46):
career in the NBA just because he's big and he
knows how to place a very good passer.
Speaker 3 (46:51):
He's smart.
Speaker 4 (46:51):
What's what's the line on that game, Maryland minus four
and a half against Michigan. I'm I'm Indianapolis. I'm turning
it up. So the tur up to at the end
of last year. The coach hated the team, The team
hated the coach. It was so bad. The last regular
season game, Angel Rees's older brother maybe maybe they're maybe
(47:13):
she's older.
Speaker 3 (47:13):
I'm not even sure he was older. Julian Reeves Juju Rees.
He benched him for the last game we Gotst. Fenn State.
Speaker 4 (47:19):
He was so mad at him. I said, well, he's
not coming back. Well he came back. Derrek Queen showed
up and they got three transfers that are all killers.
Their whole wings on point guard. They're from Belmont and
from all these bizarre places, and they're all they've all
been great.
Speaker 3 (47:35):
Last night they were they just they had Illinois down
by forty.
Speaker 5 (47:38):
You know, college basketball, and I understand, how can you
beat Dick that a team like Merlin and we could
throw out twenty five other names, but can get kids
from Radford and Belmont?
Speaker 4 (47:51):
Why did those kids end up at Radford and Belmont
to begin with?
Speaker 3 (47:55):
If they're just good? People missed on them. Yeah, John Morant,
was it Sturry State? Mike John Murray at least he
stayed at Murray State and played.
Speaker 4 (48:05):
He wouldn't have been staying.
Speaker 3 (48:07):
In these days it had been in Kentucky.
Speaker 4 (48:10):
It'd been in Kentucky, but it wouldn't have been a say,
I was thinking about that ecuation, like what does it
say about evaluate?
Speaker 3 (48:18):
You tell me one big time coach?
Speaker 4 (48:20):
Kuldnt have seen Jean John Murray in high school?
Speaker 3 (48:22):
Was Steph Jean Moran in high school? Where did Steph
Curry's death play Virginia?
Speaker 4 (48:27):
They didn't want him.
Speaker 3 (48:28):
We don't want you, Davidson.
Speaker 4 (48:30):
What we don't want you? I saw because he looked
like he was twelve, Kyle, and like you never missed
in the two thousand four thousand and three, two thousand
and eight, Villanova makes this.
Speaker 5 (48:41):
We're out in Detroit there in the Sweet sixteen, and
Davidson's there and Kansas is there and Kansas beat now and.
Speaker 4 (48:48):
I'm seeing Steph Curry and dating the sixteen. God, that's
a great question because they lost to Kansas in the final. Yeah,
by one or two. I mean he had the wrong
guy shooting. Yeah, exactly, Well, Kansas was not guy. And
I'm watching this kid play and I'm like, yeah, he's, yeah,
he's but he's he's six foot nothing, which he is,
and he's a little bigger than yea. I never he
(49:09):
looks like he's forced ever ever as good as he
looked that weekend. I would have never ever thought he
could be anything near which is a top ten He's
going to be a top ten player of all time.
Speaker 5 (49:23):
He's passed. And I know I'm gonna hate saying this
to me. In my mind, he's past Kevin Durant, and
Kevin Durant is one of the greatest offensive players.
Speaker 3 (49:32):
And he's not done. Yeah.
Speaker 6 (49:33):
Did you did you think we'd be sitting here seventeen
years later celebrating Steph Curry's four thousand three pointer.
Speaker 4 (49:40):
If you had told me Steph Curry was just going
to have a really really nice like.
Speaker 3 (49:44):
Be like his dad.
Speaker 4 (49:45):
Yeah, you know what a nice player, nice player on
nice player, Maybe win a tighter ORG and make a
couple of All star teams.
Speaker 5 (49:51):
Yeah, this kid, And I keep saying kid, I shouldn't say.
But he still looks young. You're thinking the players from
this era, Tim Duncan, uh Bron, Lebron, Kobe, Steph and
Kevin Ran. Those five are the ones you can consider
probably moving up now. Lebron's obviously the top of list.
(50:11):
I think Kobe gets short shifted sometimes because I think
Kobe is great, yeah.
Speaker 3 (50:16):
As anybody, but Steph is in there.
Speaker 4 (50:18):
Here's my problem when you're talking about old time guys
like how do I move Larry Bird or Magic Johnson
out for somebody's or Oscar Robertson, Do you go back
to a different era?
Speaker 3 (50:30):
Of course?
Speaker 4 (50:31):
Will?
Speaker 3 (50:32):
Yeah, I mean a will to me never gets moved.
That's me. All the great names just step Steph Curry.
Speaker 4 (50:40):
He's unreal. The fascinating part about him, he was a
very polarizing figure heading into that draft and came out
after his JUNI really people didn't know what he had
a chance to break. He did come out after his
junior year.
Speaker 3 (50:50):
He had a chance to break Pete Maravich's wreck. Oh,
he was scoring that. I didn't realize that, David. I
want to say he scored like twenty seven hundred or.
Speaker 4 (50:57):
I didn't realize that in college. Wow, look it up, Kyle.
In three years he was closing on three thousand. It
was a ridiculous number. So people were not sure. So
who drafted him for the Golden State Warriors? A guy
who was always an outside the box thinker Don Nelson, Yeah,
he said this. I don't eat no way he thinks this,
(51:18):
but he says, wait a second. He the game is
starting to change, and it was starting to change at
that point. Mike d'antoni's teams and Phoenix, they were starting
to change the way people looked at the three point shot,
and he was the outside the box thinker.
Speaker 3 (51:31):
Now he didn't stay around very long. The Mark Jackson
thing with the Golden State was starting to work well,
it was getting there. In Steve Carmelia work and Klay
Thompson and Mark Jackson.
Speaker 4 (51:39):
His credit said this is the greatest shooting guard combination
of all time. Before he got fired. Wasn't don Nelson
the guy had to point forward yet Paul Pressey, right,
for sure, don Nelson nobody.
Speaker 3 (51:50):
Yeah, he just did so.
Speaker 4 (51:50):
He always thought outside the bucks and he was the
one that took Steph Curry.
Speaker 3 (51:54):
And here he is seventeen years later. I mean putting up.
He has scored twelve thousand points just on reachs and he's.
Speaker 6 (52:01):
Made more free total total points. In college he had
a two thousand, six hundred and thirty five.
Speaker 4 (52:07):
I said twenty six hundred because I I remember thinking
if he stayed, because Pete Pete's record was like thirty
eight hundred, that he'd have a real shot at one
thousand points. You bring up Pete.
Speaker 3 (52:17):
I know we've done this before.
Speaker 4 (52:19):
And Pete did not have a great He had a
good pro career, very good. Didn't have a great very good.
He gets Oh, people don't go back and watch when
they do a documentary.
Speaker 3 (52:28):
Just YouTube Pete.
Speaker 4 (52:30):
Just go watch it.
Speaker 3 (52:31):
He was so far ahead of his time it wasn't
even but and.
Speaker 6 (52:37):
Also a college player his junior you're averaging twenty eight
point six points per game is insane.
Speaker 4 (52:43):
Insane, And yeah, Davidson where he was, Davidson where he
was getting triple t Yeah, obviously.
Speaker 6 (52:49):
Because who else is David's people are gonna be like, look's.
Speaker 3 (52:52):
Name a teammate of Steph Curry is a college name
another Davidson player all time? Good luck? Yeah, I can
do that. I can name his coach. It's about it.
Speaker 4 (53:00):
Well, I give you guys better, Yeah, well them, I can't.
Davidson used to actually back in the day Lefty Grisel,
they had some great teams. Are a little school in
Charlotte and there's no reason they should be good, but
Lefty Grizel made them into a national power down there
at one time.
Speaker 3 (53:14):
I can coach. I can't corect Maryland. So Maryland for
and if you're taking.
Speaker 5 (53:18):
The terms I was, I'm probably I'm probably over impressed
by the other night. But I've liked them all year.
I mean, I think they're an interesting team. I don't
they could be in the second weekend.
Speaker 4 (53:28):
I could, although I'm they're one of my more favorite
Big ten teams, although having seen them, well.
Speaker 3 (53:34):
You hate the Big Ten.
Speaker 4 (53:36):
It hasn't been good for final I know that was
what was franrating about this year, and that's way wasn't
like but made the final game that was the That
was the exception.
Speaker 3 (53:46):
Had that great run and they had all the seniors
they had like that, that's what they had. If you
watch the game against Connecticut, he was it. The rest
of their team didn't score. They couldn't score, couldn't get
a shot off. Hey, this so you couldn't score against Yukon.
Well there's that, Kyle.
Speaker 4 (54:02):
You gotta thought on Maryland before.
Speaker 6 (54:04):
I'm gonna ride with Maryland. I'm intrigued by this this freshman.
I want to see how it comes out.
Speaker 4 (54:09):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (54:09):
And Michigan's kind of been, like we said, flailing Michigan State.
I want to see Michigan State terps in the final game.
Speaker 4 (54:18):
They just played that crazy game in College Park where
Michigan State won on the half court shot.
Speaker 3 (54:22):
It was a terrible game. It's like fifty eight to
fifty five was unwatchable.
Speaker 4 (54:25):
A lot of Michigan State games are like, yeah, that's
that's that's how they want to do exactly. They want
to beat you up into submission somehow.
Speaker 6 (54:33):
And for what it's worth, Yes, March fifth, Maryland won
at Michigan's seventy one sixty five.
Speaker 3 (54:38):
So they have played in recent right, Yeah, Michigan was
starting to fade.
Speaker 4 (54:43):
Their Their guard line, which has been playing poorly, had
a good night last night against Brdue, which doesn't surprise
me because produced guard line, to me, is vastly overrated.
Speaker 3 (54:52):
It has been for years now. I don't think they
can guard anybody.
Speaker 5 (54:55):
They haven't been good since they said the Michigan coach
was going to get the Indiana job and he turned
that down.
Speaker 4 (54:59):
They haven't been good.
Speaker 3 (55:00):
Sense of it.
Speaker 4 (55:00):
Yeah, they gave him like a ninety nine year extension
after twenty five games like the Michigan State football a
couple of years ago exactly worked not well as it
turned out.
Speaker 3 (55:11):
Can we at least get to.
Speaker 4 (55:11):
The end of the season before we get an extension
to Dusty Men, who actually has done a very nice job. Yeah. Sure.
And they're they're interesting because they play through their four
and five men Golden and Danny wolf Uh.
Speaker 3 (55:23):
It's it's a fascinating duo.
Speaker 4 (55:25):
But Maryland has the right guys to play against them
in recent queen and Maryland's uh wing line guard line
is way better than Michigan, So I would like the terps.
Speaker 3 (55:36):
By the way, I forgot to ask you, how was
your dinner at Saint elm muse did they do uber?
Speaker 4 (55:44):
Like?
Speaker 3 (55:44):
Could you call them and say I had to say
those for Christmas this year?
Speaker 4 (55:48):
Way?
Speaker 3 (55:48):
Wait, whoa whoa, yeah, well.
Speaker 4 (55:49):
Send it to my house?
Speaker 3 (55:50):
Whoa whoa, whoa whoa Wait a second? Shrimp cocktail state?
Do it off a gold belly thing?
Speaker 4 (55:57):
Or that my older son?
Speaker 3 (55:58):
God, I don't know, like he's oh he's a chef, right,
or he's the It.
Speaker 4 (56:03):
Was the young older son guy. If younger son's the chef,
I might have to talk to him. We were out
there the summer and so many knocks on your door.
I think he brought it with us. Yeah, and you
and you see his things is Satmos for the people
that don't know, the famous steakhouse and then the right
across from the Doom, Yeah, within walking.
Speaker 3 (56:22):
Distance of whatever that place is called where they just
have the NFL combine And did the stream cocktail taste good?
Speaker 4 (56:29):
It did?
Speaker 3 (56:29):
It was very good?
Speaker 4 (56:30):
Uh.

Speaker 6 (58:54):
What do we got?
Speaker 4 (58:55):
Well?
Speaker 5 (58:56):
Interesting this week in my pool where I got to
pick a guy each week in December before the season starts.
Something this week that I don't know if I've ever done.
Before I knew I had Victor Hollwind and he's been
playing like crap. He was dead last after the first round,
d L d L dead. I don't think that's ever
happened to me before.
Speaker 4 (59:16):
That's impressive.
Speaker 3 (59:17):
How many players were in there, that's very impressive.
Speaker 1 (59:20):
One.
Speaker 3 (59:22):
He should get a bonus. I said that.
Speaker 6 (59:24):
I suggested that, and I get to pick week up.
He gets I get to pick week up. And it's
great because I like to use these these bigger tournaments
for the bigger names.
Speaker 3 (59:34):
So I took our boy Ludwig and he was cut.
Speaker 4 (59:37):
Yeah. Yeah, he didn't make the didn't play well after
I told you last Saturday.
Speaker 3 (59:43):
This time, I was driving by Aburgh Street. Yeah, in Madison.
That's Oberg, isn't it like Oburg? Yeah, yeah, that's his name.
But yeah, I forgot about that too, So more reason
to take Ludwig. And I drove it on the way
he saw and then on the way to the airport,
so I would have doubled down on him there.
Speaker 6 (01:00:00):
All right.
Speaker 5 (01:00:01):
But Scottie Scheffler has won this thing back to back, nobody,
which I think was the I think he's the first
person going for three. He's going for three. He's six back,
all right, and he's still only ten to one because
he's Cozy Sky's hut backs. Well, your your leader is
min Wu Lee, who actually is a pretty good young player.
Speaker 4 (01:00:21):
He's Australian. He's eleven under his time on full swing
the other day. He's not good play in the Olympics. Yeah,
he's young.
Speaker 5 (01:00:30):
Ash K Buttia, who's another good young players also he
left fifty.
Speaker 3 (01:00:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:00:34):
Yes, Then you got jj spawn at ten, you got
Rory at nine. So everybody's going to bet Rory is
three sixty. Lee is seven to fifty, but Tia is
six fifty. Spawns eleve Or is the favorite. Colin Morikowe
who should have won last week. He was in position
to win. He's four fifty. So what I'm going to
(01:00:57):
do is now, I would not fault you if you
wanted to Scotty, but he hasn't been.
Speaker 3 (01:01:03):
He hasn't been quite Scottie yet.
Speaker 4 (01:01:05):
Who knows because he had that injury.
Speaker 5 (01:01:07):
I'm gonna take more Cala plus four fifty only because
he's been playing pretty well.
Speaker 3 (01:01:13):
I would throw these two guys at if you want
to go a little longer.
Speaker 5 (01:01:16):
Xalatorus is eighteen and Fleetwood's eighteen, and they're both not bad.
Speaker 3 (01:01:21):
Flint flint Wood's still not want a PGA Tour event.
Is that correct?
Speaker 4 (01:01:24):
He's not one a PJ too. He's one of the
best golfers in the world. Yes, that's always up there.
He's top twenty, top thirty hour world.
Speaker 3 (01:01:30):
Yeah most of the time. But he plays a lot.
He's playing.
Speaker 4 (01:01:33):
He plays well in some major ship rider call about
the forty five year old Lucas Glover. No, Luke Under,
you're not buying.
Speaker 5 (01:01:40):
I covered Lucas when he won the US Open, was
sixteen years ago. I will say this though, and again,
you could do this all your Scotty shuffler. If you
want to take him at ten to one, he's six back.
You know, I mean, am I going to tell you
Scott he can't win. No, But you know it's uh,
I tell you what. It wouldn't prize me. It wouldn't
shock me if one of those two guys who are
(01:02:02):
right now, actually you get seven to fifty one min Wu,
but I'm gonna take more Calvin.
Speaker 4 (01:02:07):
To four to fifty.
Speaker 3 (01:02:08):
So you've got players.
Speaker 4 (01:02:09):
Championship Masters is like three weeks away, Masters coming soon.
Speaker 3 (01:02:14):
Three weeks is three or fourth after the final four, right,
it's always whatever whatever the final four is.
Speaker 4 (01:02:19):
This the foxt week, Uh, sec semis in Nashville today,
Auburn minus four and a half against Tennessee and Florida
three and a half against Alabama.
Speaker 3 (01:02:32):
You're talking about fourteen Did these teams just play each
other recently? Tennessee and Auburn?
Speaker 4 (01:02:37):
Did I know that Florida? You're talking about four teams,
any two of which could easily be in the final four.
Speaker 5 (01:02:43):
These could be your top four teams in the country.
I mean, stretch at their top eight.
Speaker 3 (01:02:48):
Right, no doubt.
Speaker 4 (01:02:49):
Yeah, they're all gonna be seated in a one or
two line. Uh So, Auburn minus four and a half
against Tennessee.
Speaker 5 (01:02:55):
Tennessee plays at it's a defense against offense in Nashville
interested in such things.
Speaker 3 (01:03:01):
And Auburn game? Does that worry you at all? They
haven't played well for a week and.
Speaker 6 (01:03:08):
A half and your thoughts got I'm still gonna roll
with Auburn. I mean they've been one of the best,
if not the best team all.
Speaker 3 (01:03:17):
Year, played a ridiculous schedule. Yeah, give me Auburn to
write it out of here. Minus Forta is he player
to the years?
Speaker 4 (01:03:24):
Flag? The player year?
Speaker 1 (01:03:26):
Think?
Speaker 3 (01:03:27):
I think Flag? But the guy and Alburn has been
pretty good, right, absolutely? I'm gonna I think you just
got me.
Speaker 4 (01:03:33):
Nashville. I'm taking the Volves because I think they can.
They played the way they want to. It could be
close games because that's what they like to do.
Speaker 6 (01:03:43):
Auburn not not the greatest against Old Miss, squeaking by
by five.
Speaker 4 (01:03:48):
Yeah, lost to Alabama at home a week a week ago. Today,
lost at Texas A and M. They are not playing
at the same level they were before. But it just
could be the classic. They're just waiting for the next thing.
They should lose today, just lose, get another day of rest.
We're they're going to be number one overall. See, regardless
(01:04:08):
of what happened these.
Speaker 5 (01:04:09):
Conference tournaments, there was a day that we know, well,
obviously you grew up in ACC country, the ACC tournament.
Speaker 3 (01:04:16):
Was you didn't back in the day, you couldn't get in,
get in. Merlin in seventy four is still thinking about it.
Speaker 5 (01:04:21):
But these tournaments now, I mean, I understand for teams
that aren't in the tournament, like a Saint Joe's sure,
this is great. Yep, you're getting a shock these all
of them really need to be playing this week or
Tennessee or Florida.
Speaker 3 (01:04:32):
I mean, I know but they do because look, I won't.
It's fun to win a champions but the.
Speaker 4 (01:04:38):
Next the next my night, pick to tennis, to do
whatever you want, and I'll take Auburn and I always
take the better off. Now I'm definitely taking ten.
Speaker 3 (01:04:47):
That's fine, sounds good.
Speaker 4 (01:04:49):
Also, semi finals of the A ten and you didn't
have us pick to Alabama. Now we're gonna get I'm
gonna go just time. I got you. Uh VCU minus
nine and a half over Loyal of Ship CagA.
Speaker 5 (01:05:00):
They're the ones that made that run about five years
ago with four Porters with the with the nurse, I
mean the the nun sitting on their sister sister jeans
sister Jean one to the final four.
Speaker 4 (01:05:11):
Porter Moser eventually parlayed that into the Oklahoma job, where
he's gonna he'll sneak into the tournament as SEC Team
number twelve.
Speaker 3 (01:05:19):
Into the Texas. Could be SEC Team number fourteen.
Speaker 4 (01:05:22):
Yeah, they could be uh Loyoal in Chicago, the Ramblers
against VCU. It'll be like a home game in DC
teams in Washington. DCU travels the best of any team
any score in a Gay ten and you know one
of the rumors out there. Yeah, his their their coach
could be maybe be here. Yeah, I think Virginia probably
be the favorite for Oh oh that's right.
Speaker 3 (01:05:42):
Okay, yes, that's fair. What's a better job. It is
a better job.
Speaker 4 (01:05:45):
Virginia's a better job, slightly, but Dollanova's a very good
I mean I don't have it not open yet, but
it could open soon.
Speaker 3 (01:05:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:05:52):
I don't know if either those I think they're both equitable.
You know what, and this is uncommon for me. Yes,
I'm gonna take vs. You laying the nine.
Speaker 3 (01:06:00):
I'll take loyal in Chicago plus the nine and a half.
Speaker 4 (01:06:03):
Loved Drew Valentine, the coach, like how they play, They
keep game, they keep the score. Awt you know more
about this than I do.
Speaker 3 (01:06:11):
I'll go VCU even with the spread. DC used the
team to beat.
Speaker 4 (01:06:14):
In that in that conference.
Speaker 3 (01:06:15):
Obviously, this might be the game of the day.
Speaker 4 (01:06:18):
Can Hawks beat VCU if he gets up far? No,
not in my opinion, okay, but sat just talent wise,
absolutely okay to me that as well.
Speaker 3 (01:06:27):
What would the spread be? You see you would be five?
Well that's yeah, okay, it's my game. Billy Lang would
take that, right, Billy.
Speaker 4 (01:06:35):
Lang would be thrilled if they got to the championship
game they won twenty two. I think they're twenty two
in the in their favorite today they are. We're getting
that game in a second, three thirty sec.
Speaker 3 (01:06:44):
This might be the game of the day. Florida minus
three and a half of Alabama.
Speaker 4 (01:06:48):
I have a strong opinion on this game. Wow, I
love Florida. They're as good accommodation. I'm a I'm a
Gator person there is in a country. UH. Remember the
coach was going to get fired in November because he
had some your issue.
Speaker 3 (01:07:01):
Well they got through that.
Speaker 4 (01:07:02):
I don't know what that was about. I don't know
enough about it, but anyway that it was cleared. UH
and Todd Golden as the coach he was at UH,
he was at University of San Francisco, done a phenomenal
job revitalizing a program that was once great.
Speaker 3 (01:07:17):
I like Florida. Florida plays offense and defense. Alabama plays offense.
I'll go I'll go Florida.
Speaker 4 (01:07:24):
I will not make it unanimous. I'll go Bama.
Speaker 3 (01:07:27):
Bama was slipping a little bit.
Speaker 6 (01:07:29):
They lost to Florida back on March fifth, got back
on track beating Auburn then beat Kentucky yesterday.
Speaker 4 (01:07:35):
I like a revengement here for Bama. There we go
three point thirty. So CBS Sports Network. To avoid a
Big Five team not getting into the tournament for a
third straight, Hawks need to win today minus one and
a half over George Mason.
Speaker 3 (01:07:51):
That's six over two.
Speaker 4 (01:07:53):
They played in the regular season, fifty eight to fifty
seven George Mason. That's kind of like a home game
for him, sort of just right across across the river
in Fariday.
Speaker 3 (01:08:01):
So why is Saint Jose's favorite? Then it's a really
good question.
Speaker 4 (01:08:04):
I think the theory is pretty simple, that Saint Joe's
as as good a talent as anybody in the A ten. Now,
this time last week we were talking about them getting
a double. By then they walked into a tough spot.
Dump's final home game Withsal got him last week knocked
them down a sixth.
Speaker 3 (01:08:21):
So they've played two games.
Speaker 4 (01:08:22):
They beat LSAL, they beat Dating in overtime last night
in a game they had won and tried to blow
and then they ended up winning.
Speaker 3 (01:08:30):
And Xavier Brown, the sophomore from Roman Catholic, made.
Speaker 4 (01:08:34):
The shot of his life the three to get him
a cushion late in overtime, like the Hawks against the Patriots.
Speaker 5 (01:08:40):
I'm going to do the biggest favorite of Kim for
the Hawk. My heart says, I'm gonna I'll take the Masons.
Speaker 6 (01:08:46):
I'm on the Masons too, really, they because they were
in first place in that conference for a while.
Speaker 3 (01:08:50):
I'm sorry before VC you got really hot. Yep.
Speaker 6 (01:08:54):
I still like Mason. I'm not quite sure why Saint
Jose is favored still even though it's one.
Speaker 4 (01:09:01):
And a half. But I'll go with the Masons.
Speaker 3 (01:09:03):
So George Mason, this is kind of an amazing story.
Speaker 4 (01:09:07):
They made the Final four back in six yes, so
almost twenty years of the year that they beat Yukon. Right.
One of their star players was a guy named Tony Skin.
Tony Skin is now the head coach at George Wow.
He was on that final four laren Anga, right, Jim Larenega,
and they, as you said, they beat a really good
Yukon team.
Speaker 3 (01:09:28):
I covered the game.
Speaker 4 (01:09:29):
You know where I was. You were in Janover, Florida. Yeah,
that was the beginning of the Gators rope.
Speaker 5 (01:09:35):
They held the game. Yeah, they held the game. The
start of the game up for the Georgia because everybody's
watching that game.
Speaker 4 (01:09:40):
Right, Yeah, in Connecticut had a shot to wind the
game at the buzzer.
Speaker 3 (01:09:44):
They didn't make. It was one of my fun stories
I ever wrote. And the next day, where was that
game at the DC that was.
Speaker 4 (01:09:49):
In d C?
Speaker 3 (01:09:50):
Where where the Wizards played whatever the name of that.
Speaker 4 (01:09:53):
Made play Mason in a home game? Yeah, I don't
think they were thinking Mason is going to get to
that end. Yeah, every little shock that Mason was in
d C. But yeah, but literally the next morning I
went over to George Mason campus. But first I stopped
You'll love this, Kyle. I stopped at the statue of
George Mason himself in DC.
Speaker 3 (01:10:12):
Who was George? Who is George?
Speaker 4 (01:10:14):
Declaration of Revolutionary War?
Speaker 3 (01:10:15):
Guy back? One of those guys. I looked him up
at the time, But that story is twenty years old.
I don't remember a.
Speaker 4 (01:10:21):
Lot of these. Yeh, look him up. I didn't memorize it.
Speaker 3 (01:10:25):
I didn't. Let's look at the standings of the A ten, Mike.
Speaker 4 (01:10:28):
To your point, the VCU and George Mason, Kyle actually
tied at fifteen to three. Oh okay, so VCU got
the number one seed. Just you know, some tie breaker
or something. George Mason's twenty five and Hawks should not
be favored. The Hawks are twenty two and eleven, and
I look, I think what the Hawks are doing and
they could win this rooting for I will take the Hawks.
(01:10:49):
It just it'd be nice to see the team absolutely tournament.
Speaker 3 (01:10:52):
Don't go full panel with us, so no St. Joseph favor.
Just be fun the game.
Speaker 4 (01:10:58):
I'm also really looking forward. I'll probably not gonna watch
a lot of it because the next game I'm watching
all of Houston minus seven and a half against Arizona.
This game is in Kansas City. Arizona's got off a
very slow start this year, but they've been playing great
for weeks. Houston has been playing great for years now.
(01:11:18):
Kyle will go with you to start Big twelve title
game in case.
Speaker 3 (01:11:22):
Yeah, I'm big on Houston.
Speaker 4 (01:11:26):
I think you know.
Speaker 6 (01:11:26):
I was big on Houston, you know, the last couple
of years, even though with you know, with their defense
not having the offense in tac Now that they have
an offense to compliment you know, their their top defense
in the nation. I'm gonna be riding them throughout the tournament.
I like them here even with the seven and a
half down to six and a half now, so people
are on Arizona, but I still like that.
Speaker 3 (01:11:49):
So this is fascinating.
Speaker 4 (01:11:50):
I think we'd all agreed that the Big Twelve is
no worse than the second best league in the country
behind the SEC.
Speaker 3 (01:11:55):
This year, Houston won the league by four games.
Speaker 4 (01:12:00):
They have finished nineteen and one Texas Tech, which lost
last night to Arizona, which I love to watch them play.
They finished fifteen and five. Arizona, by you, tied for
third at fourteen and six. I like Houston every game
they play until further notice. Yeah, I'm just picking them.
I'm just riding to Cougars and I'm going to keep
(01:12:20):
riding them all the way through. And the game I
want to see and you could see it in a
one to two somewhere is Houston.
Speaker 3 (01:12:28):
At Saint John's.
Speaker 4 (01:12:29):
That game.
Speaker 3 (01:12:30):
I would absolutely love this scene. And you talk about this,
I love scoring in that game.
Speaker 6 (01:12:33):
You talk about the strength of the Big Twelve too,
Houston nineteen and one, Mazon Big.
Speaker 3 (01:12:39):
I will say this, and I'm with you, guys. I
like that is interesting. They're legitimately because six and a half.
Speaker 4 (01:12:47):
Sometimes Houston plays low scoring games or lower scoring game total.
Speaker 3 (01:12:51):
Yeah, I'm just saying.
Speaker 5 (01:12:53):
Arizona is another team I actually like a little bit,
and they're not going to be a real high seed, right,
they'll be five s.
Speaker 3 (01:12:58):
My issue with them is they've just eleven times. Yeah,
but when were the eleven.
Speaker 4 (01:13:02):
Yeah at fourteen and six of the league. First year
in the league, and they certainly have played well down
the stretch. They got a lot of road trips in
that league, don't they they do. I'm looking at or
March first that got waxed in Iowa State. They're not
the first person. Then they lost to Arizona, I'm certain.
Then they beat Arizona State, which everybody beats. They lost
to Kansas by seven. That's fine, that's not a big deal.
(01:13:25):
Then they knocked Kansas out of the tournament. Then beating
Texas Tech last night is very impressive to me. Yeah,
Texas Tech is also a team that I'm gonna play
in Texas Tech beat Houston or the only team to
beat Houston.
Speaker 3 (01:13:36):
I think that sounds right.
Speaker 5 (01:13:37):
I think so in the other game, I want to
see at some point Houston Duke. That'd be fun because
I know who I'm rooting for. Yeah, No, that would
be fun.
Speaker 3 (01:13:46):
Dude, play and Cooper, you know, the and how Houston
would try to defend him and be fun.
Speaker 4 (01:13:52):
Yeah, uh six point thirty. And it's why I'm not
going to watch a lot of the Houston games. St
I'm watching all this. Saint John's minus six and a
half against Creighton in the Garden, It'll be insane.
Speaker 3 (01:14:04):
Saint John's will have ninety eight percent of the fans
trying to win.
Speaker 4 (01:14:09):
You feel the same way about Saint John's you feel
about Houston.
Speaker 3 (01:14:11):
You're just gonna You're just riding them. I'm riding them.
Speaker 4 (01:14:14):
Yeah, And look, Saint John's has the possibly fatal flaw
of bad free throw shooting and at below average three
point shooting. But man, when I watch them play, they
are just going to take the heart from teams.
Speaker 3 (01:14:29):
That's what them.
Speaker 4 (01:14:30):
So far, They've lost four games, but I could by
seven points, so what and one game was because of
a clock error in Nassa. I'll take Creyton just because.
But I'm with you on Houston and Saint John's. I
think both of those teams I would be shocked if
they don't. If they're not at least in the second weekend,
I don't know if they're getting you know, obviously everybody
(01:14:50):
can't make the final four because that's just the way
it goes. Yeah, I'm taking Saint john.
Speaker 3 (01:14:55):
Doesn't impress me. No, Yeah, that look, that guy's a
hell of a coach. They've done a great job. I
think they might hang around. I think they're finaste and
playing playing it again.
Speaker 4 (01:15:04):
Now, you guys are probably had double overtime against the
Paul Dicky.
Speaker 3 (01:15:08):
If Rick makes the final four, I'm not win the
whole thing. Yep, he makes the final four? And where
is the final fourties? Yere san? Okay, Oh great, we've
been there.
Speaker 4 (01:15:17):
Yes. Uh to me, isn't that one of the great
recent stories in college basketball?
Speaker 3 (01:15:24):
Question?
Speaker 4 (01:15:24):
I may know what Hurley's done in the last two years,
and what Jay did was was certainly Saint John's was
for twenty years a non event. Do you know what
the last bigeas title was Big East Tournament won.
Speaker 5 (01:15:39):
They've won three Biggies two of the twenty five years.
Speaker 3 (01:15:43):
Was that Mike Jarvis? Yeah, and the other two were
eighty four and eighty six.
Speaker 4 (01:15:49):
No, I mean that Saint John's is a commuter school
in Queens that has no base of anything anymore, and
it's just like the world has passed them by. Well,
you are the greatest coach of the modern era. You
bring in my man Micropole. They spend money, they get players,
they get better, and now you're there.
Speaker 3 (01:16:06):
You're late as a program. Temple, Temple and Saint John.
Speaker 5 (01:16:09):
I think we're like five and six or six and
seven all time winst Most of it was because of
what happened a while one.
Speaker 4 (01:16:16):
Hundred years ago, exactly our final game of the night.
I mean there's other games, but at Games of Interest
ACC tournament final Duke minus five and a half against Louisville.
Pat Kelsey's done a ridiculous job at Louisville, taking over
a complete dumpster fire down that Kenny Payne left him
a great coach at the college or Charleston. Apparently I
(01:16:37):
didn't see the game controversy at the end of the
Clemson game last night. Supposedly Chase Hunter got vouled a
bunch of times. Nobody called it. But whatever they're playing Duke, no,
no Cooper flags, zero chance he's playing the King. Why
would they? Duke was fortunate to survive last night. Mike,
where were thinking? The Devil's giving five and a half.
Speaker 3 (01:16:58):
You know it's Duke. I mean, Duke finds a way
to do this stuff. They Uh. I love the Louisville story.
Speaker 5 (01:17:07):
They won a game the other night where they hit
a shot at the buzzer on a on a putback.
Speaker 3 (01:17:11):
Stanford and Jackie Hepper in the Wisconsin transfer.
Speaker 5 (01:17:15):
Yeah, I don't know why I'm gonna take Duke. I mean,
I'm rooting for Louisville because that's what I do.
Speaker 4 (01:17:21):
But what is it again?
Speaker 3 (01:17:23):
Four and a half?
Speaker 4 (01:17:24):
That's a lot in the games where Charlotte.
Speaker 3 (01:17:28):
Yeah, I'm gonna go Dukies.
Speaker 6 (01:17:30):
I'll take Louisville injuries. Dude, it's gonna be a one
seed regardless.
Speaker 4 (01:17:36):
I like Louisville here.
Speaker 6 (01:17:37):
Even though they've won their two tournament games by combined
five points. I think they hang around.
Speaker 3 (01:17:43):
Yeah, I'll take Louisville just because i'd like to. I'd
like to see the game.
Speaker 4 (01:17:47):
Is Duke going to get to play their their two
n C double games like somewhere in Carolina? Okay?
Speaker 3 (01:17:52):
Yeah, Raleigh in Newark for dude, that would be that's
what we're looking.
Speaker 4 (01:17:57):
Well, they never lost in the meadowlands, right, I don't
know how they do in Newark Meadowlands.
Speaker 3 (01:18:02):
They were like twenty one.
Speaker 4 (01:18:03):
They were good at the meadow LANs whatever name of
that arena was Brendan Burn Arena whatever, that's a grena
still stay.
Speaker 3 (01:18:10):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (01:18:12):
I think it's like they do like shows there and
stuff like car shows or whatever.
Speaker 3 (01:18:15):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (01:18:16):
I don't.
Speaker 6 (01:18:16):
I don't keep tabs with the meadow Lands much. Just
no tabs on the Mets.
Speaker 3 (01:18:21):
No, not into the Meadowlands unless there's a miracle there.
Speaker 4 (01:18:26):
So it's only you know, I'm not a I don't
interact on Twitter, but I do read it occasionally. It's
just somebody after after Cooper Flags sprains his hackle, they go,
this could only happen.
Speaker 3 (01:18:37):
In Charlotte where he'll be playing on that floor next
year for the Hornets.
Speaker 6 (01:18:42):
Somebody else, somebody got Hurtle, you know, somebody else said
he Cooper Flags already getting you know, a handle on
this seventy six ers thing, right, get hurt?
Speaker 4 (01:18:51):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:18:52):
Oh man, that's terrible.
Speaker 4 (01:18:53):
You have uh you mentioned them against the rules.
Speaker 3 (01:18:56):
But we'll let it.
Speaker 4 (01:18:57):
We'll let it's live for the time there. That's all
he was against the world. You said that we couldn't
mention the basketball team.
Speaker 3 (01:19:04):
Oh, we can mention that I was there last night.
I recognize players. He's wearing the hat, Yeah he does.
Speaker 6 (01:19:10):
I'm impressed they had a guy on the court named
Alex Reese. I could have it could have been Angel Rees.
I wouldn't even SI might have been better, better if Angel.
But I got to see the six Er legend. TJ McConnell.
Speaker 3 (01:19:23):
You know what I love about all that? I love
about so Grimes is playing. You know, he's scoring.
Speaker 4 (01:19:28):
He's out there, he's playing against YEA and people are
getting excited and don't like people like, could we just
please calm.
Speaker 3 (01:19:37):
Down that this guy's having a nice little run.
Speaker 4 (01:19:40):
There's gonna be a good piece moving forward.
Speaker 3 (01:19:42):
Oh, I know somebody will have him being like the
starting off guard next year.
Speaker 4 (01:19:46):
He's gonna be a.
Speaker 3 (01:19:47):
Good compliment in the back court. I feel great for
the kid.
Speaker 4 (01:19:50):
Hey, did you do it?
Speaker 1 (01:19:51):
Made?
Speaker 3 (01:19:52):
But my god, come on.
Speaker 4 (01:19:53):
We're gonna we're gonna discuss Eagles and what's going on
with them after the break. A winning team, yes, But
before we go there, the Sixers after losing last night,
are twenty two and forty four.
Speaker 3 (01:20:06):
They're now tired. There's some symmetry in that.
Speaker 4 (01:20:08):
Impressive they're tired with the Nets for the fifth worst
record the Nets are. I think they're on like a
nine game losing streak.
Speaker 3 (01:20:15):
They're actually out doing the last ten two. Yeah, didn't
they beat the Sixers? Wasn't that they're winning?
Speaker 4 (01:20:22):
I think it was.
Speaker 3 (01:20:22):
I'm not sure it was great.
Speaker 4 (01:20:24):
So they're battling it out for the fifth most ping
pong balls at the moment or however that works.
Speaker 3 (01:20:30):
Sean explained it, But I'm too confused for the door
do who care?
Speaker 4 (01:20:35):
Right? Noll?
Speaker 3 (01:20:35):
He cares for the people at the top of the NBA.
Speaker 4 (01:20:38):
The Cleveland Cavaliers have won sixteen in a row and
they are for the second time this year.
Speaker 3 (01:20:43):
They are fifty six and ten and nobody thinks they're
going to beat the Suits. Oklahoma City is fifty four
and twelve and nobody thinks they're going to beat the
Lakers or Golden State.
Speaker 4 (01:20:55):
Nicola Yoka is just putting up one insane number after it.
Speaker 3 (01:20:59):
He's going to finish. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:21:01):
I have no problem with Shakeel Alexander Waging.
Speaker 3 (01:21:04):
He's terrific. He's on one of the best teams.
Speaker 5 (01:21:07):
This will be the sixth straight year, my math, a
seventh straight year different foreigner will win m V p
That's that's amazing to me. Three Yokiches embad and two Giannices.
Speaker 4 (01:21:22):
That is crazy.
Speaker 5 (01:21:23):
I don't even know who the last American that would
have won. It would have been the year before you. No,
Steph won his in like sixteen. Kevin Durant did he
win him? And he won his with Oklahoma City. I thought,
I'm just trying to think who would have been? What
year am I talking about?
Speaker 3 (01:21:40):
Nineteen?
Speaker 4 (01:21:42):
Got it right? Jo kicch embiid Jo kich.
Speaker 3 (01:21:45):
Jo Kicch, James Harden twenty seventeen, Jim.
Speaker 4 (01:21:48):
Bob Hard, Jim Bob Hard and work and who was
it before Hard Westbrook when he was in Houston.
Speaker 1 (01:21:55):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (01:21:55):
Yeah, that's why we traded for him. Mike.
Speaker 4 (01:21:57):
Do you remember where Jim Bob Harden played his college basketball? Yes?
They called uh this one's they played Temple in the
Incidentyes they did. And I actually called James Harden and
talked to him before you. You covered that game, didn't you?
I was, I did not cover it, but I talked I.
Speaker 3 (01:22:15):
Didn't, so somebody was covering off.
Speaker 4 (01:22:16):
Where did go? That's I don't know. Arizona State, Arizona State, damn.
Speaker 3 (01:22:22):
Like and they held him member to keep. I wanted
to say st s U, but then I remember had Brooks.
Speaker 4 (01:22:28):
He held it hardened like nine points. Kid from a
couple other guys killed him.
Speaker 3 (01:22:33):
We're talking.
Speaker 4 (01:22:34):
I was like, it's the only guy that held Brooks that,
I mean held them hardened to like that few points.
The s I did Arizona State at the time, and
I can't remember his name.
Speaker 3 (01:22:43):
He was an awesome guy. I called him.
Speaker 4 (01:22:45):
I said I want to talk to hard and he says,
here's his number, call Hardened. Sitting out on the lawn.
I said, what's calling Jane? And he couldn't have been
any nice. He was just he was great.
Speaker 3 (01:22:53):
It was before he was the beard and everything else all.
Speaker 4 (01:22:55):
The other He's actually.
Speaker 3 (01:22:58):
Like a nice guy. He does.
Speaker 4 (01:23:00):
It's like Westbrook to me, what when I hear I
know Westbrook's guy, oldis whatever. He seems like a nice guy.
Kyrie Irvi seems like a nice guy.
Speaker 3 (01:23:09):
But they're just they're a little whacked out polarizing.
Speaker 6 (01:23:11):
Yes, before before Giannis in twenty eighteen, what Farner won
MVP before that?
Speaker 4 (01:23:19):
So in twenty seventeen, we're talking about foreigner. No, he
means like who was the foreigner before that. Yes, Uh,
we go back always, we go back aways. Wow, Steve
Nash from Canada.
Speaker 6 (01:23:33):
No, he won before that. Steve Nash was five six
six oh seven, Dirk.
Speaker 3 (01:23:37):
Dirk, it makes sense. Yeah, Dark Nevenska the German and
they played on the same team for a while. Yeah,
yes they did in Dallas.
Speaker 5 (01:23:45):
The difference was Dark won a title, Steve never did.
Steve might have been my favorite player ever in the NBA.
Speaker 4 (01:23:52):
He was.
Speaker 3 (01:23:53):
Oh, I loved them.
Speaker 4 (01:23:54):
Because here's my last trivia question.
Speaker 3 (01:23:56):
Mike goes the answer to this. Where did Steve Nash
go to college? This is very obscure.
Speaker 4 (01:24:02):
He wouldn't notice.
Speaker 3 (01:24:03):
Uh, Saint Peter's That's that's even more obscure.
Speaker 5 (01:24:06):
Santa Clare, Santa Clair and as a freshman in ninety
three he played Temple in the first round, second round
of the tournament.
Speaker 3 (01:24:16):
They beat Arizona, one of one of the most famous
tournament games ever.
Speaker 4 (01:24:20):
Arizona at one point scored twenty five in a row
against Santa Clara lost and they had three pros on
the team man and lost, and Temple got.
Speaker 3 (01:24:31):
To believe that was it. When the nation first heard
of Steven.
Speaker 4 (01:24:34):
I don't think he put I don't know how good
you who was it? But maybe he think of I
don't know anyway. This is a stream of consciousness here there, Santa.
We'll be back to talk to some Eagles. A lot
of significant names leaving, but not the biggest names.
Speaker 3 (01:24:52):
They're all signed for the.

By the way, I just looked up that Arizona Santa
(01:26:11):
Clair Arsona was favored by nineteen and eight. That's unreal
and they lost the game. Hey, can I throw something
in real quickly? And this came up this week.
Speaker 5 (01:26:20):
I'm gonna give Mike Mizzanelli credit for this. Jimmy Rownds
is getting his Wall Wall Fame, Okay, yep. He really
can't get a sniff of the Hall of Fame, which
I find weird better phenomenal his numbers.
Speaker 3 (01:26:35):
I don't have the numbers in front of me.
Speaker 5 (01:26:36):
If you put them up against Ozzie Smith, who was
like probably a first ballot or whatever, they're the same,
including well.
Speaker 3 (01:26:44):
He had much more power than Ozzie Smith.
Speaker 5 (01:26:46):
Right, there was one st like he had more home runs, yes,
but then Ozzie might have more steels. But basically their
numbers right down the end, Jimmy had a better fielding
numbers that Jimmy.
Speaker 4 (01:26:58):
Yet he can't Now how is it. Look, if you're
voting for the Hall of Fame, I get it, but
can't somebody point that at the people that hey, here's
a guy who's in the Hall of Fame and we
consider Ozzie a great player, right, and this guy can't
get a sniff.
Speaker 3 (01:27:14):
That's weird.
Speaker 4 (01:27:14):
Hall of Famers are weird and getting weird. I mean
it was not Jimmy.
Speaker 5 (01:27:17):
Look, I always thought that the first basement was the
was the guy that powered the team, you know those
four years.
Speaker 4 (01:27:23):
I mean Jimmy was the leader, and I always thought Chase.
Speaker 3 (01:27:27):
Was the hidden kind of guy, like he was the guy,
you know and people love it.
Speaker 4 (01:27:31):
Jimmy was the motor, was he not?
Speaker 3 (01:27:33):
He absolutely was. That's why he has always been my
favorite player. And you won an MVP. I don't know.
I have trouble with these things.
Speaker 4 (01:27:41):
And he's the old time Philly's hit leader, yeah, which
I'm not saying that puts you over to time you
had a phenomenal career, right, and you can't get close.
Speaker 3 (01:27:48):
I don't even understand this Hall of Fame stuff at
the time. I can understand if maybe you get close
and don't make it.
Speaker 4 (01:27:53):
Right.
Speaker 3 (01:27:53):
Can you tell me why his MVP year he was
not an All Star? Well, the All Star goes out
in June. I mean, guys don't make All Star teams.
That was the air the Mets at like a six,
seven game lead in the last two weeks.
Speaker 5 (01:28:05):
But it's funny, Kyle, if you look back when some
guys I've done this before, like guys they wouldn't make
the All Star team, but they like they lead the
league in home runs.
Speaker 3 (01:28:15):
That was Jimmy's.
Speaker 4 (01:28:17):
Year.
Speaker 6 (01:28:18):
Yes, at least twenty homers, twenty stolen bases, twenty triples
which you.
Speaker 3 (01:28:22):
Got on the last day of the season, the twentieth.
Speaker 4 (01:28:24):
Triple, as I recall all, right, So Eagles starters gone,
Josh Sweat is gone, c J. Gardner, Johnson is gone,
Darius Slay is gone. Back off, Milton Williams gone. Those
are all defensive players offense. People didn't hear it. Makai
Beck then signed with the LA Chargers yesterday game well
(01:28:48):
back up signed with Pittsburgh, the.
Speaker 3 (01:28:51):
Tight end might be going. They to be determined on that.
So the bottom line is is this.
Speaker 4 (01:29:00):
They have to pay.
Speaker 3 (01:29:03):
Jalen Carter. Is it next year, Mike after next year?
They got it. That's usually when they do it. They
don't let you go into your list.
Speaker 4 (01:29:09):
Year're just gonna get as much money as any defensive
tackle has ever got, which is going to get close
to Miles Gallard, I would think, right. So they're obviously
the front offices figuring out what do we gotta do next?
Kyle you you came up with how many draft picks
they have? Twenty in the next two years? Is it
twenty in the next two years? I was looking at
the twenty twenty six one, It's like, I think it's twenty.
(01:29:32):
It's probably around twenty because twenty twenty six alone is
like help tenor right. But the good news is that
what you would call the irreplaceable players, including Jalen Hurts,
Smith and Brown, the two tackles, running back Sakuon Dickerson,
(01:29:53):
they're all here.
Speaker 3 (01:29:54):
Linebacker, long term ball. They spent money on two cornerbacks.
Speaker 4 (01:29:58):
The cornerbacks you don't have to pay them yet, defensive line,
and then you're gonna have to play Carter at some point.
To me, of all the players that they've lost, probably
Sweat would be the one guy that concerns me the
most because defensive ends that rushed passers are hard to find. Yeah,
I don't know who that guy is now on this team. Frankly,
(01:30:21):
you know, maybe they're gonna draft them, maybe they're gonna
trade for him. Maybe the guy Huff is not going
to be a bust that he's appeared to be up
till now.
Speaker 3 (01:30:28):
I wouldn't hold your breath Now, I'm not holding my breath.
Speaker 4 (01:30:31):
Offensive line and Becting that a phenomenal year. But he
was a product of Statlin you like they all are.
They'll find somebody to play right guard. Uh, they just
they just trade for a guy from Houston. That's where
Gardner Johnson went. It was like similar to Beckton right,
kind of a bust and they got out. So make
(01:30:54):
your orders, your level of concern if any how.
Speaker 5 (01:30:58):
He's trying them. Couse, we just won a super Bowl. Look,
they might win a Super Bowl next year or a
year after a year, whatever. I think they've earned the
benefit of the doubt if nothing else. That doesn't mean
he's going to get it right or they're trying. They're
trying to do it. The one thing you can do,
or the Eagles have shown you can do, is get linemen.
They can get offensive lineman, they can get defensive linemen.
(01:31:19):
This draft supposedly has a lot of linemen in it,
especially on defense, and nowadays it seems like there's almost
as much emphasis on having pressure up the middle as
pressure from the outside.
Speaker 3 (01:31:31):
Makes sense.
Speaker 4 (01:31:32):
So I think the Eagles will try to figure this
out as but they they've shown they can develop defensive lineman.
Speaker 3 (01:31:38):
Staltlin has shown he can develop offensive lineman, and.
Speaker 4 (01:31:42):
The other defensive tackle, Davis, He'll be gone after next
year anyway.
Speaker 3 (01:31:45):
They're not gonna They're not gonna.
Speaker 4 (01:31:46):
S Well, see what I think. It depends what kind
of year he has. Well, he's just a guy, yeah right,
I mean, especially a good year, especially as a first
rounder too.
Speaker 5 (01:31:57):
Probably he's a rotation, probably, I mean the most The
best thing to me is the two corners are set
for you would think a while barn the quarterback is
set behind the line with two receivers and a running back,
So they may have to look. Kansas City won back
to back Super Bowls, one year defense, one year more offense.
(01:32:18):
This year, the Eagles are probably against a really tough schedule.
Everybody's shooting for you.
Speaker 4 (01:32:23):
Okay, so they might not.
Speaker 5 (01:32:24):
Go fourteen and three or whatever, but they're the team
everybody's got to shoot for. So if you're the Lions,
if you're at the Rams, if you're the Washington's, all
those teams got to go in. And I'll tell you
the team that I think, and maybe I'm just an
idiot that of all the teams that come back, I
think the Lions.
Speaker 4 (01:32:42):
Are the team that you still have to look at. Yeah,
they lost the two coordinators, Okay, I get it.
Speaker 3 (01:32:47):
Yeah, they got to pass. The whole defense was eighteen guys.
Speaker 4 (01:32:51):
If the Eagles had eighteen guys on defense out, they
weren't getting to the Super Bowl.
Speaker 3 (01:32:54):
My concern with them is how the quarterback played at
the end of the season.
Speaker 4 (01:33:00):
Horrible game.
Speaker 3 (01:33:00):
That'st Washington. That was embarrassing.
Speaker 4 (01:33:02):
Yes it was.
Speaker 3 (01:33:03):
It was just awful. Do you recover from that?
Speaker 4 (01:33:05):
I mean, the talent wise, their line's great, they got
skill guys all over the place.
Speaker 3 (01:33:08):
Their offense is still a mackic. How do you come
back from that?
Speaker 5 (01:33:11):
Do you come back saying, you know what, we're tipped
because we think we had the best team last year.
Speaker 3 (01:33:16):
The Eagles would have to come playoffs. I don't know,
ye very interesting.
Speaker 4 (01:33:19):
You know, maybe the coordinator can't.
Speaker 3 (01:33:21):
Maybe whoever the new coordinators can't do as good a.
Speaker 4 (01:33:23):
Job as the other guy.
Speaker 3 (01:33:24):
We'll say. But what the bottom line is this, Eagles
are going to be good.
Speaker 4 (01:33:27):
Eagles have the best combination of quarterback, running back, and
receivers in football.
Speaker 3 (01:33:31):
And line to line and line. It's not particularly so
basically best offense.
Speaker 4 (01:33:36):
The team to meet at second or right there with
him is Detroit. Detroit has a great line, great receivers,
great running. The quarterback's not as good. I don't think
he's jailing, but he's close in that system.
Speaker 3 (01:33:47):
He's close.
Speaker 4 (01:33:47):
And he hasn't proven that he can win a big game.
He's been to a super Bowl, but he couldn't win it. Right, No, no,
you're right, and they and they really lucked into that
if you remember, that's the game New Orleans got cheated on.
Speaker 3 (01:33:58):
No, absolutely, defense is not not remembering that correctly. Yeah no, no, no,
you're right.
Speaker 6 (01:34:04):
The offense is not the issue here. I think the
microscope here in Philly is on the defense. Yeah, because
the defense is a completely different look. A lot of
people don't like the Gardner Johnson trade, including me.
Speaker 1 (01:34:15):
I did.
Speaker 6 (01:34:15):
I didn't really understand it. Now you have Tristan McCollum
right now as you're starting strong safety, who is terrible.
Speaker 4 (01:34:22):
When CJGJ was earth last year.
Speaker 5 (01:34:24):
Well, think about this, he was he was here in
twenty two. Yes, they went to the Super Bowl. He
wasn't here in twenty three. Yeah, and he goes he
was here last year they won Super I was a
little I'm confused by that one. I didn't really understand.
I mean, did you hear about the Twitter stuff?
Speaker 4 (01:34:40):
No, okay, he's under contract, right, It wasn't like he's
trying to get more money.
Speaker 3 (01:34:44):
No, they didn't, and the cap space that they got
from it wasn't.
Speaker 5 (01:34:48):
Darius went on Twitter and said something to the effect
of who will be the leaders? They said if you're
not here, and he mentioned the other safety reblank and
ship like thirty.
Speaker 3 (01:34:58):
Five times and didn't mention CJ.
Speaker 5 (01:35:01):
CJ tweeted back or something said something about like and
somehow money got into the conversation and always so I'm
guessing that maybe I don't know that. Maybe CJ was
going to ask for more money, which I don't know
any of this, but there.
Speaker 4 (01:35:16):
Recently has a player. To Mike's point, you would want
him the years of Rezero. Yeah, and that may be coincidence,
but I think he was a major part of it.
But why did they go get him back? A ballhawk
exactly why did they go to get him back? It
looks like he's got a real high i Q. He
makes place you go. How did he know that that
guy was going to run and he was?
Speaker 3 (01:35:35):
Here's the thing, that attitude leader. Now here's the thing.
You get a ring like them as a player there.
Speaker 5 (01:35:40):
Now I know they want to win another ring next year,
because if you win two in a row, you separate
yourself from the pack.
Speaker 4 (01:35:45):
But they're playing. They've got a ring, and they've got
two rings in eight years. Yeah, so if they don't
win next year, they're not gonna fall. But in the
next five or six years, can they win one or
two more? Because that then makes you something that a
lot of teams do. What they've done all right, they said,
all right, these are the indispensable guys.
Speaker 3 (01:36:06):
We've got a Saint John's switzshert out here.
Speaker 4 (01:36:07):
Right, the two the two offensive tackles sign long term.
The left guard signed long term. The center is gonna
get receivers, receivers for the next couple of years. Receivers, quarterback,
running back. They've said you were paying all of you
guys on defense. They said, Zach Bond is indispensable, Jalen
Carter's going to be indispensable. My guess is Blanken Chip
(01:36:28):
is going to get paid. Two corners are gonna be
some point they don't have to worry about them for
a while. But the point is all the guys that
they've said we have to have, they have and you
know what they did, and they're and this is what
makes them smart.
Speaker 3 (01:36:41):
They're always ahead of the curve, always ahead of the curve,
and they're guys.
Speaker 5 (01:36:44):
So while their receivers are I'm just guessing now like
twenty five million, let's say now, receivers are getting forty millions.
Even Jalen Hurts at the time they signed them, I
mean they had to give them all the money. Now,
I don't know if you know, bones had one good year.
We have to put he apparently it looks like he's
playing Jalen Carter is going to be the key to
all this because people are talking about him like he's
(01:37:06):
Miles Garrett or could be Miles Gary.
Speaker 3 (01:37:09):
He's gonna get all the money. Ye, so, and you
better make sure that he is Miles Garrett. You know,
I mean we think he can be.
Speaker 4 (01:37:15):
Yeah, I mean he was. He was phenomenal last yeary
may save their season against the Rams. Say that saved
the season. Let's let's like, and you couldn't nobody could
block the guy.
Speaker 5 (01:37:27):
Yeah, he won that Rams, and he and his presence
makes all the other guys make Josh sat.
Speaker 3 (01:37:32):
And that by Milton Williams got paid, I got you.
Speaker 4 (01:37:35):
And that's their theory is that all these other guys
were good because of Jayalen Carter and whoever they put it.
And they may not be right about this, but whoever
they plug in will be good because teams are gonna
have three guys.
Speaker 3 (01:37:48):
This draft supposedly, Yeah, but we'll find out.
Speaker 4 (01:37:50):
We don't know.
Speaker 3 (01:37:51):
I know those guys.
Speaker 1 (01:37:52):
I know.
Speaker 5 (01:37:53):
This draft has defensive linemen apparently and tight ends. That's
two of the positions that they're really and Eagles are
going to get a tight end.
Speaker 4 (01:38:00):
Whoever they have evaluating college players, and obviously the starts
with who is that. I don't I don't know. They
must have whoever, Well, they have tons of people. Who's
title though, is like I'm in charge of it. But
whoever they are. Given the last four drafts, you'd have
to say they're brilliant. Yeah, I mean it's so. What
they're saying is money wise, you can't pay everybody. We're
(01:38:23):
gonna find guys that are gonna fill in these holes
in the draft. We're gonna throw them out there. They're
gonna get coached up, and they're gonna be really good.
Whoever the Eagles. So far, they've been right about whoever.
Speaker 5 (01:38:33):
Now the Eagles will have a new offensive coordinator for
like the tenth year in a row. I mean that,
that's all part of it. Whoever they take in the
second round is gonna be good. They haven't made a
bad second round pick in like five years. Yes, go
all the way back to you go all the way
back to jailing every pick since then, it's been a
second round pick is a starter.
Speaker 4 (01:38:54):
And Jalen Hurts was a very controversial. That's ther I
was about to say, I'm popular. That's not right.
Speaker 3 (01:38:59):
I didn't like Pick, to be honest with you, right
either at the time, Yeah, you got you got your
star quarterback. What are you doing?
Speaker 4 (01:39:05):
You're trying to undermine him? It turned out he did.
They knew that the star quarterback had flaws. They liked
what they saw from Jailing Hurts when he got with
a coach and let him throw the ball at Oklahoma
and they said, we think he can be the guy.
Speaker 5 (01:39:18):
And can I ask you heard that? They were They
thought that Wentz had flaws. Why did they give him
all the money? Yeah, that's a good question.
Speaker 3 (01:39:26):
I'm just curious.
Speaker 4 (01:39:27):
Maybe something happened between giving him. When did they give
him the money?
Speaker 3 (01:39:31):
Like the year before that they remember there were there
were stories coming out about it. He was a whacko. Yeah,
I don't know what he was like, uncoachable.
Speaker 5 (01:39:40):
I still to this day do not think the Eagles
took Jailing Hurts with the idea he was going to
be this jail And Hurts. Now I could be totally wrong,
and it doesn't matter if I'm right or wrong, because
he is this jail and Hurts.
Speaker 4 (01:39:53):
But they were looking around after the toy, after the
first season he started, They were looking at quarterbacks that
were available because they were Wilson, Yes, and I remember
all that. But you know, my suspicion is they had
some questions about Wentz. He obviously had a phenomenal year
at Oklahoma, and I think Mike they went back for
all the reasons we like Jalen Hurts as a college player,
(01:40:14):
all the stuff that he went through and.
Speaker 3 (01:40:16):
He came out the other side. If I mean, if
you don't like.
Speaker 4 (01:40:19):
Him personality wise and a teammate, you're an idiot. Yeah,
he's obviously one of the greats at that and I
think all that was part of it, and they said
we want a guy like this one hour two.
Speaker 3 (01:40:29):
But they did destroy the team for that one year.
Speaker 5 (01:40:31):
I mean he took they took everybody down, as it
turned out, and then it took them a year to recover.
Speaker 4 (01:40:36):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (01:40:36):
That also helps shine a light on the kind of
person that Carson Wentz is he either you know, responds
to that to make himself better or he does what
he did, which was but basically self employed.
Speaker 5 (01:40:47):
It's funny when people talk about jailing and there are
people right now and it's the four quarterbacks that are
the four quarterbacks. Nobody's taking jailing ahead of them. That's
not a knock one Jailing. It's just that those guys
are those guys. I'm convinced there's people right now to
be take the guy from the Chargers ahead of jail
if you were having a draft, No, not me either,
But if you were having a draft tomorrow, for.
Speaker 3 (01:41:06):
Like, he looks like what people think a quarterback.
Speaker 4 (01:41:09):
They would take Stafford. They would take Stafford. And again
Stafford's big won a Super Bowl. Would because well, if
you're drifting for one year, though you might I'm just saying,
but Jailen, I'll take Jailen. I'll take my chances because
he's gonna have to throw the ball more this year.
He's going to have to and you know what, I
got no problem with that. He looked pretty good throw
it at the.
Speaker 3 (01:41:28):
Super Bowl, and you know, and you know what, he
looks good doing that.
Speaker 4 (01:41:31):
Sixty seven times he runs the ball and he gets like,
you know, breaks your back.
Speaker 3 (01:41:36):
He was great in the Bowl. He's been creating both balls.
Speaker 4 (01:41:40):
He played in. I mean, he made one bad playing
in the bowl's in each Bowl and it cost him
into one.
Speaker 3 (01:41:47):
This time it didn't and this time he got to
hit when he was I still.
Speaker 5 (01:41:50):
Go back to the drive when they were down eight
points and they got the ball and they had a
score and he had that passed and then and then
on a two point conversion, they said here, here's the ball,
and he gets hit at the one yard line by
like two guys and just says, that's it.
Speaker 3 (01:42:04):
I'm in the engine.
Speaker 4 (01:42:05):
Ye.
Speaker 1 (01:42:05):
No.
Speaker 4 (01:42:06):
I love Jail and herds love everything about him as
consummate teammate.
Speaker 3 (01:42:09):
I mean, he's a football guys. Dad was a coach,
and I like his personality me too.
Speaker 4 (01:42:13):
I'm fine with it. He's cool. He's cool, and he
was cool after the Super Bowl because he did smile
a little bit.
Speaker 3 (01:42:19):
He did show you that side.
Speaker 4 (01:42:20):
And that's just who he is. And I love the
fact that he came out and said what we all suspected,
this is that game two years ago took my soul.
Speaker 3 (01:42:29):
I mean, nobody tells you that you knew it was true.
And he was waiting for his chance.
Speaker 4 (01:42:35):
And man, when he got it, ball was like Mahomer
and Mahomes got beat by the Bucks, and that's stuck
in him and this one probably will do. Do you
know the one thing you know about Jalen, I think
we can love it. Jailing did go through a period though,
where I think he had to grow up. I think
there was times last year and times to me, and
I think he did, which I'll give him credit for that.
Speaker 3 (01:42:55):
And I don't know who talked to him.
Speaker 4 (01:42:56):
Or who he was throwing the ball.
Speaker 3 (01:42:58):
He was winging the ball around, but he was He
wasn't the right leader try.
Speaker 6 (01:43:02):
He was trying to do too much at times, trying
to play hero ball, which is what Mahomes did in
this past Super Bowl, trying to overcompensate.
Speaker 3 (01:43:09):
But what did one of his teammates when.
Speaker 4 (01:43:10):
The guys said, he just had to learn to be
more with the team, like not kind of being all
by himself.
Speaker 3 (01:43:16):
You know what else he found out?
Speaker 4 (01:43:18):
Just give the ball the bark is always helpful to
give them the third guy who's had a season, unlike
you know, the best.
Speaker 3 (01:43:26):
Player all year.
Speaker 4 (01:43:27):
Was the first snap against Washington where they just tossed
him the ball game. I was watching that in a
hotel room in Ann Arbor. This game, I was like,
look at this first play, fifteen yard game. Oh wait, no,
he's just sexually.
Speaker 3 (01:43:41):
Four Washington guys had chance to attack.
Speaker 4 (01:43:44):
How bet the first guy they looked at was Dan
Quinn on the sideline, look like worst boy.
Speaker 3 (01:43:51):
They were stilling that game.
Speaker 4 (01:43:52):
It was fifteen to thirteen, and then they found they
fumbled twice back to back.
Speaker 6 (01:43:56):
And the Eagles offense is still intact. Defense has some
holes to fill. They won the Super Bowl. They're going
to be in contention next year.
Speaker 4 (01:44:04):
Everybody, there's thirty two teams in the good I'll take
my chances with the Eagles right now, and you can
have and they and they have built the team to
massacre other teams, physically abuse them.
Speaker 3 (01:44:18):
That's what they've decided. This is what we're doing, and
that won them a Super Bowl. The best thing right
now is they did to Kansas City.
Speaker 4 (01:44:25):
Kansas City's players still probably haven't physically or mentally recovered
from just getting They were like they were the boxer
that got knocked out the first round.
Speaker 3 (01:44:34):
There were Mike Tyson, they just got.
Speaker 5 (01:44:36):
I love the fact that everybody's talking about Washington and look,
I give Washington or do it again.
Speaker 3 (01:44:42):
Thank you, there you go. Let's see if you see
if I love the cornerback.
Speaker 4 (01:44:46):
Let's get that first meeting next year whenever they play,
get a defense, and then we'll talk.
Speaker 6 (01:44:52):
We do have a report before we get at it
here from Brillan Johnson. Breaking sources have confirmed to Villanova
and that Kyle Neptune was informed that he is no
longer the Villanova head men's basketball coach.
Speaker 4 (01:45:06):
Of course, Villanova hoops and football on our air. Not
a great shock. Kyle Neptune after three years.
Speaker 3 (01:45:13):
He had one year left at England. His contract downs. Right,
I'm gonna give you a name.
Speaker 4 (01:45:17):
I don't know if this is going to happen, but
if there's one name I would like, I love Chris Collins,
the Northwestern coach. I don't know what the what they're
thinking at Villanova. If they hire him, they got a
home run.
Speaker 3 (01:45:28):
Do we know anything about the new A d like
who he might know? Or he's a football guy? He
was at Oregon because we've heard the VCU coaches name right.
Speaker 4 (01:45:36):
Yeah, for sure, Rhyano for sure. I would think Virginia
is probably getting Ryano. It would be my guest, but
I don't know. So anyway, Kyle Neptune out at Villanova.
They got official not official, It sounds real quick. Baker
done Levey have any chance in this zero? That's what
I thought athletic. I did well at quindeva. I don't
(01:45:58):
think so okay, I don't think that's happening.
Speaker 3 (01:46:00):
So there you go.
Speaker 4 (01:46:01):
So that's half of the Big five New Coast. They
better get this one right, chief. Oh yeah, they got
the nil money, they got to get it right. They
got the backing. They just got to get the right coach.
Speaker 3 (01:46:11):
That's how. And you can change this in one year.
They haven't played on Friday in the Big East Tournament
in three years.
Speaker 4 (01:46:16):
