Born to teach. That's the phrase that comes to mind when listening to Tanara Livingston's remarkable story. Speaking from the bustling ASCD, ISTE conference in San Antonio, this Title I facilitator from Mobile County Training Middle School reveals she began her teaching career at just ten years old—running a paid tutoring program for younger children in her neighborhood. Fourteen years into her professional teaching career, that same entrepreneurial spirit and natural aptitude for education continues to define her approach.

Okay, so I always wanted to be a teacher.
I have a funny story.
When I was 10 years old, I hada tutoring program.
I would get paid to teach theyounger kids in my neighborhood.
Their parents would pay me totutor them.
Amazing, and you were how old Iwas 10 years old.
I had a working tutoring programat 10 years old and my aunt,

(02:59):
who actually lives in SanAntonio right now, she has a
story.
She worked for the governmentso she would come home and visit
me in Mobile from Korea at thattime and she had a story about
how she would come in myelementary fifth grade classroom
and I would be teaching theclassroom.
So I just always wanted to be ateacher.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
That is awesome, and how long have you been teaching?

Speaker 2 (03:23):
This is year 14.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
Wow, that is so great .
And is there anything inparticular you're hoping to get
out of the conference today?
You're like this is why I camehere.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
Yeah, I just want to find different ways to engage my
students, to build a positiveculture in the classroom, things
that I know.
You know I don't like to havejust a regular boring book paper
classroom.
I want things to be engaging.
Also, this year my school we'vegone into even though it's a
middle school, we've gone intosmall group rotations.

(03:56):
So technology has been a greatpart of those small group
rotations, part of those smallgroup rotations.
So that's one of the reasonswhy I want the ABC books,
because I wanted to use thoselessons to reinforce the
standards in my small groups.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
Oh, that's so awesome .
Yeah, because we have thee-books and the online testing

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
