In this homily on October 26th, 2025, Fr Mathias preaches on the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector in the temple. Behind the ugly self-righteous pride is a forgetfulness of God as the source of our goodness, that leads us to look down on others. Since this sin is difficult for us to see, Father Mathias outlines three signs that might indicate that we're struggling self-righteous pride:
1) We tend to take credit for the good things we're doing for God and others
2) We don't often ask God for forgiveness
3) It's easy for us to look down on others because their struggle with sin
In outlining these signs, Father Mathias offers ways to overcome each of them so we can not only walk away from our prayer justified, but so that we can be an attractive witness to the unbelieving world around us.
