A DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT: On this date, July 31, several Christian Churches, including our Lutheran Church, commemorates Joseph of Arimathea. We learn about him in all the Gospels (Matthew 27:57-61; Mark 15:42-47; Luke 23:50-54; and John 19:38-42). Although a "secret disciple" prior to Jesus' crucifixion, he boldly asked Pilate for Jesus' body and with Nicodemus, buried Jesus in Joseph's own tomb. His bold action ...
“Ever Faithful, Ever His,” by Pastor Chris Navurskis, based on Psalm 100:5.
“Ever Faithful, Ever His,” by Pastor Chris Navurskis, basedon Psalm 100:5.
A DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT: When God is silent! That was the title of a devotion I read this month. God sometimes seems to be silent particularly in our prayer life. We wonder whether He hears or even cares about us. Job felt that way (Job 30:20) as did Habakkuk and Isaiah. Several psalms speak of God's silence, too. Jesus experienced God's silence from the cross, yet God is always present. His Spirit helps us in our weakness (Ro...
"Who Is Coming to Dinner?” by Pastor Maschke, based onGenesis 18 and Luke 10.
Based on Luke 10:25–37.
A DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT: On this birthday of John Calvin, we remember his contribution to the 16th century Reformation movement. Trained as a lawyer, Calvin was much more systematic in his theology, emphasizing God's sovereignty and power, in contrast to Martin Luther, who emphasized God's justification of the sinner by grace through faith in Christ. Both men were biblical theologians and recognized the need for reform in the ...
Sermon based on Galatians 6:1-10, 14-18.
A DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT: Today, my son, Jedidiah, and his wife, Anna, celebrate their 21st wedding anniversary. This past weekend, we also prayed for Pastor Larry Prahl and his wife, Norma, as they celebrated 50 years of marriage. God has blessed the marriage relationship as St Paul wrote about it in Ephesians 5:21-33. May we all celebrate the relationship of love we have with Christ, our gracious Groom.
“Our Way or His Way?” by Pastor Maschke, based on Luke9:57–62.
A DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT: Our Lutheran Church celebrated the 495th anniversary of the Confession of Augsburg. This document, read by Christian Beyer before Emperor Charles V and the Roman Catholic leaders, on June 25, 1530, gave witness to the Christian faith in our Triune God, who sent Jesus to forgive us our sins. We receive this justification through faith in Christ not by works, as Article XX so boldly asserts (the longest article ...
