Speaker 2 (00:35):
What's going on Steelers Nation Radio. It is high noon
on a Thursday afternoon. That can only mean one thing.
It's time to go inside the electric factory. Here on
your twenty four to seven Home of the Black and Gold.
I'm Bless Suler, He's Arthur Motes. Between the pair of us,
we've got a decade of experience and a really good
head of pair.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
It's up to you to figure out the rest.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
But what you should know by now is that if
you want to get involved, it doesn't matter what time
of year it is, if we're doing our shows in
a regular noon slot, if we're in a different time slot,
if it's pre recorded, whatever the case may be, you
can always get involved. We always want your questions, comments, concerns, reactions,
your participation, and you could do so on Twitter on

X at Wesley Youuler at the body fifty two, Duh boy,
Arthur Motes, Greetings from a very hot Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
I am loving it. How we do it?
Speaker 4 (01:31):
Man? Life is good it's been in minnies as I
see my dog Man, so always good to see your face. Man,
you're nice and tanned up over there. You got that
I was on vacglow. You look good, man, look real
good baby.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Thank you.
Speaker 5 (01:44):
But yeah, other than that, man, things have been good.
Speaker 4 (01:46):
Man. Keeping it cool as possible, you know, with all
this heat worve.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
Yeah, no doubt. It has been a heat.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
For those of you not in Western Pennsylvania, it's been
a heat wave the last few days. Although to be fair,
I think it's been that way around a lot of
the areas of the country, not just Western Pennsylvania, so
you might be able to relate. But I'm not complaining.
All right, if rain season is finally over in summer
is here, sign me up. I am ready to go.
I am ready to rock here in Western Pennsylvania. Arthur
(02:12):
Nathan Motes the third and yes, it's gonna be back
and chopping it up with you. And the one nice
thing about going on vacation this time of year, well,
I mean there's a lot of nice things about going
on vacation this time of year.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Let's be honest with ourselves.
Speaker 4 (02:26):
I was like, why are you about to minimize it
to just one be what.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
What One of the nice things about going on vacation
this time of year is that usually when you get back,
you got some things to talk about, because you know,
there's not the day to day news cycle like there
typically is, but if you take a week off, there
is plenty to get to usually in the span of
you know that many days. One of those things that
(02:50):
was kind of debated pretty heavily last week was the
NFL's All quarter century team, as announced by ESPN. Of course,
now twenty five years into the twin the first century.
I do want to get to that on the program
here today. But some Steelers news, some Steelers moving and
shaken as we get things going here in the opening segment.
(03:14):
Aaron Rodgers was on with Pat McAfee earlier this week
on Tuesday. It is now Thursday as we are doing
this show, and you know, got into a lot of
different things, both Steelers related and kind of personal life related, Mozi.
But I think the thing that stood at the forefront
(03:35):
to me was him saying, and I quote, I'm pretty
sure this is my last season, and that's why we
did a one year deal. You know. Aaron Rodgers and
now that that part was an exact quote. Now I'm
paraphrasing a little bit, but he said, I'm pretty sure
this is my last season. That's why we did a
one year deal. He talked about how he's been blessed
to play twenty years and you know how much this
game has given to him. He talked about how he
(03:57):
thinks an organization historic like the Steelers, a head coach
respected like Mike Tomlin is kind of a great way
for him to finish up his career. Some looked at
that a little bit as a shot at the Jets
and what they had there the last two years, But
to be fair, Aaron Rodgers been saying that about the
Steelers and.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
Mike Tomlin a lot for a while now.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
It's not the first time we've heard him say something
like that, and I of course knew that this was
a possibility, Mozi, but it sounds like Aaron Rodgers is
pretty committed. I want to run this thing back for
one more year with a coach like Mike tom and
an organization like the Steelers. Get that bad taste of
the last two years out of my mouth, and I'm
pretty sure this is my last season.
Speaker 4 (04:38):
Yeah, I mean I have mixed feels about it. Number One,
I do like the fact that he's acknowledging it on
the front end, and even though he has it one
hundred percent confirmed it this will be he's pretty much
ninety nine percent the way that he's communicated it that
this will be his final season. So in that stance,
you do like the fact that, man, he's not running
from it. He's ranting to it into it. He's saying that, hey,
(05:01):
this is what it is, and he's letting everybody know
what the stakes are for him personally. When we're saying
that this is my final goal around, this will be
my last time putting on an NFL jersey step in
the NFL stadium as an active NFL player, I get
it all right. And that's the part that it's like, man,
for some dudes, they try to fight that fight. They
(05:21):
don't want to acknowledge it, or they keep lying to themselves,
and it's like, man, that could be detrimental as well.
But when you see the guy that will acknowledge it,
that will even in June communicate this, Yeah, man, this
is probably going to be it for me. I like that.
But then the reason why I have mixed feelings. Is
this so also telling me that you are also acknowledging
(05:41):
that you're checking out man, that you're on the end
of it. And now my question is how much until you,
not just physically but mentally retire, do I get a
full season? Or is it up until the bye week?
Is it up until week ten? Is it up until
all right, we're facing a little bit more adversity late
(06:03):
in the year.
Speaker 5 (06:04):
We've seen some lait.
Speaker 4 (06:05):
Slides these past couple of seasons. Is that when you decide,
you know what, man, I'm gonna retire anyways, that's the
only thing that personally makes me a little bit just like, ah,
I don't like that all the way. But we've seen
how the Jerome Bettest element worked where we knew ahead
of time this is going to be the last go
You knew ahead of time this season was going to
(06:26):
be more special than others because specifically this is going
to be this guy's last go around. And in that vein,
it motivated not just Jerome, it motivated the roster and
those guys are all rallied around them. If we're getting that, man,
I love it. Now, we know that it's not apples
to apples because Jerome had already been here for a
decade and already had built up a legacy here, whereas
(06:48):
Rogers has a bigger legacy, but it's more of a
national legacy, not a Pittsburgh legacy. So that's the part
where we will have to just see how the guys
respond and rally to Aaron Rodgers communicating on the front
end that man, it's probably gonna be it, man, so
let's make it a good one, you know. But those
are kind of the the instant feelings that I had
(07:08):
when I first you know, saw those comments.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
Yeah, and there's a lot, there's a couple of things
there that I want to get into with you. I
think that is one of the things that we often
hear is like if you're already thinking, if you're thinking
about retiring, you already are you know, like whatever that
that exact old adage is. And I think there is
definitely merit to that. But I also thinks you gave
a Jerome bettis example, like I think, you know, the
(07:33):
the end of Peyton Manning's career and in the end
of John Elway's career, and guys who were still able
to to and those are two very extreme examples obviously
because they both won Super Bowl.
Speaker 5 (07:44):
Legendary guy legendary.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
But you know, uh, there's obviously examples to the contrary
as well too, where people have stated, you know, this
is going to be it for me and they and
they go out with a great year, ultimate team prize,
you know whatever, host season, success, whatever, whatever it may be.
So it will, yeah, it'll obviously be you know, something
to keep an eye on, you know. And he said
(08:09):
as well too, I'm gonna I'm gonna empty the tank.
That was one of the lines that that that he
said as well too. So yeah, so I wonder, like
you you obviously know you know what this is like,
like what was that what was that you know, time period,
time frame like for you when you were kind of
deciding to to hang it up, to call it quits.
Speaker 4 (08:28):
Yeah, for me, I already said it. I already wanted
to retire in your seven But in terms of when
you finally commit to saying all right, I'm going to retire, yeah,
I was retired. This is I'm done. You know, it's
not a lot of second guessing it. But that's me personally.
You know, I'm a guy that when I make a decision.
I'm not second guessing it, you know, And especially when
we're publicly speaking on it, it's like, yeah, you're gonna know.
(08:50):
I'm ready to retire when I retire, you know. So
that part is very different mentally coming into a season
in June saying yeah, guy, it's probably gonna ye publicly
like internally, yeah, we had people that we had conversations
with that would already aware of it. But we're not
signing contracts, we're not committing to any the if we're
(09:13):
second guess in that part. And that was one of
the things that I always felt like, to me internally
was something that I just personally had to do. And
that was why, like I said, when I first started
to feel it, started to have those conversations. And then
even when I retired, you hear people, oh man, you
could still can still No, I could? I know I could.
I mean not even to this day. I'm still athletic.
I'm still very much in shape. In fact, Rick, I'm
(09:35):
in better shape than I was when I was playing.
But the thing is the desire. You don't have that
desire anymore, and once you mentally check out, that's where
it gets bad. That's where you get bad tape where
you know you're looking at a guy you're like, man,
he makes a lot of players, but at the same time,
he just looks like he's missing some of the details.
He's not as locked in on all of the minutia
(09:57):
that made this player who this player was for as
long as they played. And every player is different. Some
feel like, man, my eighty percent is still good enough. Sure,
Others are like, man, if I'm not giving one hundred percent,
I don't want to be out there because I don't
want to cheat the game. That's how I viewed it,
But now everybody used it that way, and that's the
part work for me. I'm just like, man, I'm fortunate
(10:18):
that I got to be in that position to even,
you know, flirt with retirement multiple times and then actually retire,
you know, because most dudes you don't get to retire.
Speaker 5 (10:27):
It's like, yeah, you usually got kicked out and I think.
Speaker 4 (10:30):
You didn't to get picked up for two years you play, right,
but it was like, nah, bro, you you you you
want on a contract? Man, you have no money like that,
you know what I mean. So that's the part that
I said, I was very fortunate to be able to
experience that, you know, and just that evolution of being
a player. Man, that NFL lifespan. Coming as the young guy,
(10:52):
You're hungry, you want to take everybody's job. Then you
got it, Then you get the money. Now you got
to keep the young boys off of you. And then
you get to the point where you're like, man, I've
gotten everything I've wanted out of this thing. Now you're
planning your escape. Some dudes never planning the exit plan.
I'm an exit plan dude, Like, all right, what's that
strategy gonna look like? So that was you know, like
I said, man, how I kind of viewed it. But
(11:13):
shout out to Rogers though, we're gonna see because this
is different, like it is. This is like when Kobe
announced the farewell, Like, Yo, this gonna be the last. Yeah, Like,
you're gonna get a lot of love from a lot
of players while you're out there because they're gonna be
respect like super respectful of just like, yo, I know
who you are. I don't care what the fans have
to say about you. We know what you are and
(11:35):
to us, you're special. I don't care about what any
fit has to say. To us, you matter and they're
gonna let him know that, and I think that is
the cool part for him to also be able to
receive that as well.
Speaker 2 (11:46):
Completely agree, And I'll tell you right now, there's gonna
be a portion of Steelers fans, I'm telling you off
the rip here that are gonna be annoyed by that.
There is a portion of Steelers fans, and I love
this about them, but has the attitude of like leave
the cameras and the attention you know, for the Cowboys
and for teams like that, like we're we we're gonna
(12:07):
pick up our launch pale and we're gonna go to work.
But I'm gonna tell you there's gonna be a lot
of attention around Aaron Rodgers, particularly with the schedule that
he's playing against a lot of his former his two
former teams, and his former divisional rivals, and the fact
that people it's an all time legend who is likely
going to be playing his final games. That's going to
get a ton of attention from the sports world nationally.
(12:28):
And I know that that's gonna drive a lot of people,
both fans and in our business media, people who I
think sometimes you know, get protective over over the Steelers,
and it's our thing here in Pittsburgh and in the
national standpoint, stay away, this is our team again.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
I love that intimate family feel.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
But I'm telling you there's gonna be people that are
gonna be annoyed by this.
Speaker 3 (12:49):
I'm telling you right now.
Speaker 5 (12:51):
Yep, yep, that about right.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
That's right.
Speaker 4 (12:54):
Surprise, don't be surprised because he's that is about right.
But yeah, it comes with the territory. Man, it would
you rather have the quarterback that nobody cares about. There's
a lot of quarterbacks out here walking this world that
when they retire from football, nobody even knew.
Speaker 2 (13:11):
Or it might be it might be on the bottom
of the ticker on ESPN, but that's about it.
Speaker 5 (13:16):
Nobody even knew.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
We gotta get to a break. I do want to
touch on just one or two other things that Aaron
Rodgers had to say. Had some nice things to say
about Pat Fryer Moose, some nice things to say about
Will Howard.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
We'll talk about those.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
Just for a few minutes, and then we are going
to deep dive into this ESPN All quarter Century team.
What we like, what we don't like, some controversy in there,
that's what we'll do as we roll along. You know
where to get at us if you want to get involved.
West Schuler, Arthur Modes. It's a Steelers Blitz on Steelers
Nation Radio on the Steelers Audio Network.
Speaker 1 (14:00):
This is the Steelers Glitz with Wesley Huler and Arthur
Mose on your twenty four seven home of the Black
and Gold.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
As skin are back on the blitz here as we
roll along the final week of June here, really, I mean,
I guess technically the calendar turns over early next week,
but the last full week of June here, as we
are just just about a week away from July fourth,
now a month away from from training camp opening up.
It all happens very quickly, but we are enjoying a
(14:32):
little bit of downtime here and we'll continue to do
shows up until training camp with occasional hiccups and pauses,
as we both have a couple more trips in Faca.
Speaker 5 (14:40):
We got to live a little bit, you said, we
gotta go a little bit. We worked really really hard
so we can we can live a little bit. That
was just said. All right, that sounds good.
Speaker 4 (14:48):
I can think you do it.
Speaker 5 (14:49):
Motes.
Speaker 2 (14:49):
You told me one time early in the history of
us doing this program together, that people have this fallacy
that they think you enter the regular season one hundred percent.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
You said, that's never the case.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
He said, if you're lucky, you start the first day
of training camp one hundred percent case. And you said,
but you better be one hundred percent to start a
training camp because if you're not, you ain't gonna ever
get there at any point.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
That's like us too, all right. I mean, you know
it's a.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
Listen, I'm not getting in a car crash fifty times
a game, okay, but but it is still a crime,
a different kind of crime, but it's still a crime nonetheless.
So we got to get recharged to one hundred percent
before we get to late July as well. Uh And
speaking of being recharged, the fellas will be flying out
to Malibu at some point to uh to hang and
(15:39):
to work with Aaron Rodgers. He did have a funny
line about that, uh where he said they better dress
nicely because he used some not so nice words about
the paparazzi that I won't repeat, but he basically made
a joke that when we when they show up to
my place to work out of Malibu, they better be
dressed nicely because there's gonna be paparazzi snapping pictures. They
better wear some nice outfits, a nice clothes which I
(16:01):
thought was which I thought was pretty funny, But I did,
I did, I did. Just want to touch on with
you his comments about Pat Fryermuth and Will Howard starting
with Will Howard. Uh, just what's I know in your
decade of NFL experience you saw veterans' mentor younger guys
at every position, I'm sure, and I'm sure you saw
(16:21):
at times younger guys who didn't want the mentorship, older
older vets who didn't want to give the mentorship. So ideally,
what what does what does a successful what does a
positive year of Aaron Rodgers and Will Howard together look like?
Speaker 4 (16:38):
I mean, number one, he teaches how to watch film.
Just be a professional, Hank. If you never even utter
words directly to him, your example of how you are
a professional, to me is the bare minimum of being
a mentor, of being a leader. Do the job right way.
If you can just show up to work one to
(16:59):
watch the tape you're suposed to watch, you're supposed to
practice dressed with supposed to dress when you get to
the to the airport, what do you wear, where do
you park? All these little details, that's leadership. If you're
the guy that shows up two hours late, if you're
the guy that shows up dressed like you don't care,
if you're the guy that you know shows up in
a mental state that isn't you know, the best for football.
(17:21):
I don't care what you say out your mouth. You're
not a leader. Your actions are gonna tell them. And
to me, that's the first and only thing that he
should worry about. You know, have your actions being lined first.
After that, if you feel into your heart that you
want to share extra with Will Man, now you're going
above and beyond. Now that's the icing on the cake
with is, so to speak. But to me, Man, I
(17:43):
just think for Rogers Man, it's be you because his
own method right has led him to be one of
the most successful quarterbacks in the history of football. So
at what point do we start, you know, taking the
(18:04):
advice of the people that have never lived it to
that extent to tell hey, you should act like this
in the building.
Speaker 5 (18:11):
No, you know who you are.
Speaker 4 (18:13):
Now for Will Will, it's going to be his responsibility
to understand, Man, what I can add from Aaron Rodgers
to my game, to my work ethic, to how I
operate as a man. I mean, that's the other part, right,
we don't think of that, We think exclusively. You're only
learning about football the amount of time we spend around
each other, you're learning about life. Speaking of just football.
(18:37):
You learn about life because of how much time you're
just around each other. And if you're around bad people,
guess what you're at. Oh, it's cancer, right, one bad
opera in a whole bunch. Yes. The reason why they
try to get those guys off the roster, even if
they are ultra talented, it's just like, you know what, hey, man,
that guy probably shouldn't be around this guy for two
(19:00):
much longer he could ruin him. That's the other part.
Even though that guy might say everything he's supposed to say, man,
great verbal leader, great vocal leader, Oh my god, he
has all the cool speeches. He knows how to tell
you everything you need to hear, but his actions are atrocious.
He doesn't do any other things that he says. So
(19:21):
now that message doesn't get received the right way because
that young guy looks at that person has a hypocrite
and even though that might be a valid message, because
it's coming off in a hypocritical manner, the message gets lost.
And that's the part where I'm just like, for Rogers, man,
I just think less is more. If you come in
here and you're trying to do all this, let me talk,
(19:43):
talk talk, do it a certain specific way. Yeah, he
said how the media has gotten on him, and some
of it has been justified.
Speaker 5 (19:49):
But even go back to the COVID.
Speaker 4 (19:51):
Situation, just the simple wordplay right, something that is casual
to him. You saw what it sprawled into, and then
from here we saw how York turned out. So when
I look at this situation, I'm just like, different approach
would be going back to the approacherre at in Green Bay.
We didn't hear a ton of Oh, he's the best
mentor for Jordan Love. Listen how he talks to Jordan Love.
(20:11):
He always got Jordan Love righty, No, I didn't hear
all that. But what you saw was when he left
and Jordan Love took over. Jordan Love came in prepared
to go. Jordan Love stepped up, and he's been operating
like a true professional quarterback, a franchise quarterback. Right, Even
get one hundred million dollars. That's not by mistake. That's
because he got to see it. And I'm sure man,
(20:34):
for the Justin Phillis crowd out there, they look at
that and say the same thing.
Speaker 2 (20:36):
Man.
Speaker 4 (20:36):
I wish Phillis could have had that opportunity because maybe
that would help him out.
Speaker 5 (20:40):
We'll see how much Russ rubbed off on him though, right.
Speaker 4 (20:43):
But to me, that's what I think of, and that's
kind of how I view Rogers going into this mentorship role,
or even his eagerness to want to do that. I'm
just like, show me your actions first, man, because we've
seen even in New York. If that's the version, not
the feeling on field play, but just some of the
behind the scenes stuff that was coming out, right, if
(21:05):
that's your energy, you don't want that internal, Will Howard,
that's not what you would want because that's gonna be
more of a me over. We we don't need that.
But if we can get it back to, like you said,
the Green Bay version, where it was yo, I'm the
people's champ, man, I'm doing this for us, like yo,
yeah you remember that, come on count double check. So
(21:26):
when we look at that, that was a more inclusive.
That was a more yo, we're all doing this together.
I think that those are the type of leadership qualities
that he still has, and I think that he can
show that at a higher level by just simply just working, Like,
don't overthink it, just work bro.
Speaker 2 (21:45):
Yeah, but he knows Rogers, Yeah, I completely, I completely
agree with you. And obviously, I mean he came into
the NFL with Brett Favre and you know there was
once a remember, a ton of conversation around that relationship.
Speaker 4 (21:59):
And so if you can just watch, if I could
just look and see it, I need to see it.
You don't even have to like me all the way.
I just need to see it.
Speaker 3 (22:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (22:08):
Absolutely, there's success leaves clues, right, isn't that the old
isn't that the old adage? And uh, certainly Aaron Rodgers
a guy who's had plenty of success, and just to
kind of close this down, I I think Pat Fryarmuth
is in a position to have some success this season.
You know, Aaron Rodgers talked about how he really likes
(22:29):
this tight end room. He kind of mentioned some similarities
between Darnel Washington and Mercedes Lewis, which is a very
nice compliment for for the young Steelers tight end, but
he continues to talk up a lot about Pat Fryermuth
called him a super talented guy who can do a
lot of different things, and at many camp Arthur motes,
(22:49):
it felt like Aaron Rodgers and Pat Fryarmuth were almost
going out of their way to get more reps and
and and and and time on the field together. I
think Mouth is a guy everyone on this offense is
gonna benefit from having a quarterback like Aaron Robson. But
I think I think, I think Mouth could be in for,
you know, for one of those career type seasons this year.
Speaker 5 (23:11):
No, without a doubt.
Speaker 4 (23:11):
I mean the thing with Mouth we've talked about is
more so been sometimes availability, but largely just targets.
Speaker 5 (23:18):
Get the opportunities Arthur Smith.
Speaker 4 (23:20):
The history reflects him liking targets or him liking to
target tight ends, even to the point where we were
talking about do we trade for John new Smith at
one point during this offseason. So with that man I
guy like Mouth, now that at least some of that
trade talk has settled down, I do think that that's
gonna make him, you know, be able to have some
(23:42):
more success out there because he's a mismatch. Like what
linebackers are you just consistently putting on him? Right? He
makes you have to play that game of I'm playing
bigger body guys or do I put this safety on
him and hope that he can run with him? Because
this guy can and you know, create separation and he
(24:02):
has consistent hands. That's the other thing with Move, Like
I said, I've meant for him, it's just got to
stay available, stay healthy. He'll improve the block in and
that continues to be the thing that he has to
work on. And that's with all the you know, high
end receiving tight ends, the Travis Kelsey's of the world.
The I'm again John Black, but man Mark Andrews, like
(24:22):
all these dudes. Man, George was like, yeah, the blocking part,
that's something that they all had to develop.
Speaker 5 (24:28):
But we know what they do, you know, bring in terms.
Speaker 4 (24:31):
Of getting open, catching that football and just being a
playmaker with the ball in their hands.
Speaker 5 (24:36):
Move is in that same vein.
Speaker 4 (24:38):
He just has to, like I said, make contigue to
just bro, which I think he will do. But I'm
sure that trade talk wasn't the best for him either, man,
So we'll see how these continue to progress though, as
we get close to the trade.
Speaker 2 (24:50):
Again, Sir sure will excited again, excited to watch everyone
on this offense work in conjection with Aaron Rodgers uh,
DK Metcalf uh the other wide receivers. But yeah, but
but mouth's certainly gonna be exciting as well, to DK Metcalf.
Can they add another another piece? A little more sizzle
(25:12):
between now and then? We shall see?
Speaker 3 (25:13):
Certainly.
Speaker 2 (25:15):
Uh, but yeah, I tell you what there's gonna be
there is there.
Speaker 3 (25:19):
There is gonna be a lot to be excited about.
Speaker 2 (25:21):
There is a lot to be excited about, and will
be plenty to talk about here just about a month
when we start to see the bullets flying. But we
gotta get to a break here. When we come back,
we will spend the rest of the program combing through
the NFL's All quarter century team best fifty three man roster.
I got some beefs. I'm sure Motzi will have some beefs.
(25:43):
You know, maybe some pork or some chicken or something else.
I mean, you know, just just just beef.
Speaker 4 (25:48):
Here.
Speaker 2 (25:49):
Some familiar names, some familiar names that are on this
list from our Black and Gold family. Some names that
aren't on this list from our Black and Gold family
that that you could certainly argue, should or could be there.
We'll get into all of that as we roll along.
You know where to get at us if you want
to get involved. Arthur Motes, West Schuler Steelers Blitz.
Speaker 1 (26:18):
Is the Steelers Blitz with Wesley Euler and Arthur Motes
on your twenty four to seven Home of the Black
and Gold s n R.
Speaker 2 (26:27):
Final segment of the first hour here of the Steelers
Blitz as we bring another week to close. If you
are gonna be traveling around this weekend ahead of Uncle
Sam's birthday, ahead of the fourth of July, big vacation
week for a lot of people, obviously, be safe out there,
Be good out there. Take all of your relatives phones
and subscribe to the Steelers Blitz wherever you get your podcasts,
(26:50):
like all of the subscribe to the Steelers YouTube page
and like all of our Steelers Blitz videos on there
as well too, so that our metrics look very good
to our bosses and our overl lords. Please and thank you,
Arthur Motes, we are going to get into this NFL
All quarter century team by ESPN. I've been waiting, patiently,
(27:10):
waiting as a rapper from New York might have said,
to go over this with you, because there's some things
on this list that I like. There's some things on
this list that I don't like. There's some things on
this list that I think are fair, you know, good
natured debates that you can't really be wrong on either side.
Speaker 3 (27:28):
It's just an opinion type thing.
Speaker 2 (27:30):
So I want to jump right into this with you
at a position group that is going to be near
and dear to your hearts. Now, normally when we do
this type of stuff, you give me grief because I
always start with the offense. Always start with the quarterbacks,
the prom kings, right, I want to start with the
off ball linebackers. I want to start with the middle linebackers.
For you here and again, this is ESPN's All quarter
(27:52):
century Team best fifty three man roster. They have five
off ball linebackers, which I was kind of surprised they
pick five for you know, but but I guess at
the same time, I'm not.
Speaker 3 (28:04):
It's a fifty three man roster, so you got it.
Speaker 2 (28:06):
You gotta.
Speaker 4 (28:08):
Look, we gotta fill it in somehow, baby.
Speaker 2 (28:11):
If it was a I guess if it was like
a top thirty and they took five.
Speaker 3 (28:20):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (28:20):
And here's the list, And what they did with all
of these is they gave their picks and then they
also had some practice squad guys at some positions as
well too. They they did it for real, real off
ball linebackers, big shocker number one, Ray Lewis. They also
took Bobby Wagner, Brian Erlacker v And these are in order,
by the way, Lavonte David and Luke Keighley with a
(28:44):
practice squad off ball linebacker as well Derek Brooks, So
six if you include the fifty three man roster and
the practice squad and Arthur Motes, there are some absolutely
All five guys on here plus d Brooks are absolute studs,
absolute dogs.
Speaker 4 (29:02):
Yeah, they got d Brooks as a practice squad This
is nuts. I like it.
Speaker 3 (29:07):
They don't have Patrick Willis on the list. What are
we doing here?
Speaker 4 (29:11):
Listen? They ain't the only one. Shoot you said Patrick Willis,
Dereck Brooks as a pea squad guy. Heck, you ever
heard of London Fletcher. You should look him up as well.
That's another absolute monster. What Yeah, dude, this is this
is interesting.
Speaker 5 (29:27):
This is interesting.
Speaker 2 (29:28):
Interesting Again, it's hard This is like when you and
I always say somebody didn't make a Pro Bowl, Fine,
tell me who you're taking off.
Speaker 4 (29:36):
No, So for me, man, Like I know, like just
instantly hearing the list man when they said Levonte David
and Derek Brooks is on the practice squad, I'm flopping
the I'm swipping those dudes instantly.
Speaker 3 (29:46):
I'm with you.
Speaker 4 (29:47):
Derek Brooks, we know he's a Hall of Famer already,
super Bowl champ, already.
Speaker 5 (29:52):
That's mister Tampa too though, like.
Speaker 4 (29:55):
All these demons that we're seeing run style, Yeah, was
Derek brook That's how that was created. The Tampa too,
created in Tampa coach Thomlins there as well.
Speaker 5 (30:05):
This is the reason why.
Speaker 4 (30:07):
And you look at the interceptions of what he was doing,
that to me is tough.
Speaker 5 (30:12):
So I would put him.
Speaker 4 (30:13):
Up there over Like I said, Levontae David, I like
how they put Luke Keigley and Bobby Wagner up there
at the same time, basically just covering their basis. But
at the same time, and when I think of a
guy like Patrick Willis, I would love to have him
up here. I think the only one that I could
go and hunt though, would be Luke Keigley because I've
already taken Levonte David off.
Speaker 5 (30:31):
That's my only issue.
Speaker 4 (30:33):
And due to how much shorter he played in comparison
to Arlacer wags Lewis, I'm like, oh, that's the tough
one for me, right, this is that's the tough one,
because to me, man, when your list has Derek Brooks
on the practice squad, like, this is insane, man, This
(30:56):
is insane, man. But at the same time, when I'm
looking at him, just like Vonte David in his own right,
I mean, let's he's still going right now, Kim twenty twelve,
thirty nine sacks, thirty one forest fumbles, thirteen picks, chimp, three.
Speaker 5 (31:10):
Time All Pro. He's decorated in his own right.
Speaker 4 (31:14):
But this is and when you're talking all time great list,
it's been some all time Grayson. This isn't even all
in the history. This is just in this past century.
That's the other part. So we got to like start
looking back specific years and it's like, okay, this, let
me make sure we get when this started, which with
two thousand, right, yeah, the two thousand lists. I'm just like, man,
(31:38):
it's been some absolute head busses in this league, man,
they played a linebacker spot.
Speaker 2 (31:44):
Like I mean, man, Louke Keikley was a seven time
All Pro in eight years and he's at the bottom.
Speaker 3 (31:50):
Of this list.
Speaker 5 (31:51):
That's what I'm saying. Like, I'm like, you're not tended.
Speaker 3 (31:54):
Keithley and Patrick Wellis have the short you know, the shorter.
Speaker 4 (31:57):
Yeah, there's a shorter spin, right, Whereas when you look
at Brooks, you look at Bobby Wagner, you look.
Speaker 5 (32:01):
At ray Lewis, like fifteen years.
Speaker 4 (32:05):
Brian Urlac, it's like probably playing from twenty to twelve
to twenty twelve. It's like bro thirteen years in the league. Man,
I get seven years. It's cool, but it's what we're
talking thirteen ray Lewis was ninety six to twenty twelve.
You catch what I'm saying, Like Bobby Wagner. Bobby Wagner
twenty twelve and he's still playing right now.
Speaker 3 (32:26):
You were like impressive, Yeah, in a violent position.
Speaker 5 (32:30):
Right, And these aren't just the dudes that are out there.
Speaker 4 (32:33):
These are the dudes that are averaging one hundred and
thirty tackles a season.
Speaker 5 (32:36):
So I'm like, I love Keithley, I love Willis.
Speaker 4 (32:40):
You know that, man, how mean you feel about Pete Williss,
but I'm like, yeah, we talk about dudes they had
like seven years versus dudes that played thirteen fifty four.
When everybody's a chat, when everybody has the hardware too,
everybody's decorated, everybody is the man. I was the best
armback when I was like, all right, who did it
(33:01):
longer than I guess we go we start looking at
that because if you put practice squad, Patrick Willis and
Derek Brooks isn't even on that. I'm like, yo, what
type of list is this?
Speaker 5 (33:13):
Yeah it does.
Speaker 4 (33:16):
It's just tough, man, these but these are all our guys.
That's the other funny part, Like we are very fortunate
to have this possible, like all these dudes, all of
these dudes. Man, But I just it's a tough one
for me to have Levonte over Derek Brooks unless they're
simp Let me see, maybe I'm gonna try and find
(33:37):
a reason why. Okay, I found the reason why you
would have Levonte on the list over Dereck Brooks. You
started the list quarter century, set it in two thousand.
D Brooks was already in the league in ninety five,
so he's what two, three, four or five he's going
into the year six by the time this list starts,
(33:58):
and then he still played him into two thousand and eight.
But if we're gonna say that, you know what, that
was only half of it cool audible or practice squad
because of the half porshit. I will justify that way.
But other than that, I'm like, how are you telling
me you got Lavonte David over Derek Brooks on your list? Bro? Like, uh,
and they both played for Tampa. No, I can't go
(34:21):
with that one. No, can't do baby.
Speaker 3 (34:25):
I'm with you on that.
Speaker 2 (34:26):
It's a it's a fun like all these all these
position groups are fun to go to.
Speaker 3 (34:29):
So like you love it though, if you.
Speaker 4 (34:31):
Had a list, dude, that's mean we can spend three
hours on just defense here, bro.
Speaker 3 (34:37):
Who show on just the defense?
Speaker 4 (34:38):
Because I'm just sitting and you said these are in order,
so you need to tell me Ray Lewis is the
number one guy. They got Bobby Wags over lacer Lacker
over David and they keep it. I was like, if
that's the case, wait a minute, if it's just all right,
these are the guys that made the list cool, But
you tell me those guys.
Speaker 5 (34:58):
Whoa whoa whoa, whoa, whoa. Yeah, so here we are, here,
we are.
Speaker 3 (35:06):
I love it.
Speaker 2 (35:06):
And so the way that they did the kind of
rest of the defensive front was they picked edge rushers,
of course, and we're gonna save that to start hour
number two because there's some some juicy debate there that
I don't want a short change. Then they did defensive tackles,
uh and they took one nose tackle and one versatile
defensive lineman.
Speaker 3 (35:25):
So they took three, you know, true.
Speaker 2 (35:27):
Defensive tackles and Aaron Donald obviously arguably the greatest ever
uh Kalais Campbell and Chris Jones along with Kevin Williams
and Cam Hayward on the practice MOTZI and then one
nose tackle Vince will Fork. No big, no big shock there.
They did give a shout out to Casey Hampton in
their in their selection, but Vince WI. They didn't pick
(35:51):
him as a as a practice squad. They just said
that he, Vince will Ford, gets a slight edge over
Casey Hampton. And then they took JJ as their versatile
defensive lineman, you know, kind of citing how he lined
up differently throughout the course of his career.
Speaker 4 (36:08):
Who would you put in there as your first d
line and if not for JJ Watt.
Speaker 2 (36:12):
I mean, and that was just kind of funny to
me how they and I get it. I'm not saying
he doesn't deserve it, but his.
Speaker 4 (36:17):
Own position for because they say he don't play D
he don't play de tackle, he don't play he plays everywhere,
versatile mele Rachel's interior.
Speaker 2 (36:31):
I mean, listen, if you're if you're gonna have this
list and not have the three time defensive player of
the Year on that list, I don't know what you're
doing exactly.
Speaker 4 (36:40):
That is no practice squad either, you feel me, thats
no practice squadi. That's the other part. But no, I
think that by them creating that position that gives a
guy like Chris Jones a chance to get on his list,
is that simple man? Otherwise Chris Jones won't be on
the list. And if Chris Jones isn't on the list,
then Cam Hayward probably gets bumped down off a practice
squad and he's still feel some type of way. So
(37:01):
if any day we should be like, you know what,
shout out to the fact they created that position right there, man,
because like you said, that's a three time Defensive Player
of the Year award winner.
Speaker 5 (37:08):
Man, if this list would.
Speaker 4 (37:10):
Read Aaron Donald, it would read JJ Watt and then
we'll read Cleary as Campbell, Like we know this correct.
They wouldn't even be a debate about it. And we're
fortunate that they even broke up nose tackles and separated
them as well, because how do you not have Vince
Warfolk on this list? So now we're like, yep, Aaron Donald,
JJ Watt, Vince Worfolk figure out the rest RCLO practice
(37:33):
squad in comparison to what these dudes were able to accomplish,
both individually and at least in Warfolk's situation and in
Donald's situation, Aaron donald situation. Being able to win championships,
you know, those aren't small feats. We talk about the
significance of being a champion and while we, you know,
do acknowledge that, for the guys that were able to
(37:54):
win it and not just be a part of it,
but be main contributors. We know Aaron Donald was a
main contributor. We know Vince Wreford when he was playing
up in New England main contributor. And those are some
of the things that matter you know when you're splitting
these hairs like I.
Speaker 5 (38:10):
Love it though.
Speaker 4 (38:10):
I love it though, Man, that my dude, Camdough does
get this opportunity to be recognized on a list like this,
because Cam Man, to me, he was the late bloomer,
and not late bloomer in the sense of man he
was trash early, but no, he just wasn't as loud
productionalized as your Aaron Donalds and JJ Watts. I mean,
we all know what that narrative was when those guys
were out there. It's Aaron Donald is JJ Watt's JJ wat?
(38:34):
Or is Aaron Donalds aarondad J Like those were the convos,
and then Cam started to pull up even more and
then the longevity started the show. And now it's like, Okay,
the conversation that me and you joke about we talked about,
is Cam here with a Hall of fame we first
started the show versus those conversations. Now, that's why I
say Man more of a late bloomer to it. Whereas Man,
(38:54):
when Aaron Donald did his back to back before he
got the third one, it was like you just did
back to back bro, your Hall of Famer jjor WAD.
They was like you're your double, You're Hall of Famer, bro,
What are we talking about here? So I just think
that in that vein, that's the part where we all
get a chance to see everybody get ignowlged and ready
get the respect that we think that they should deserve.
(39:15):
Because Cam has had a heck of a career and
it's still going. But the knock on him in comparison
to the camp or into the Aaron dollars of the
JJ Watts are they got the deepoi or d poise
plural and heck one of them even has that Super
Bowl ring. And that's what the Chris Jones part is
(39:37):
gonna when we're talking all the time stats, Chris Jones
was Cam Heyward man.
Speaker 5 (39:41):
I love Cam over Chris.
Speaker 4 (39:42):
But the problem is going to be Chris is gonna
have all these super Bowls to go along with the statistics,
whereas for Cam the knock he is not going to
have all these championships to combat that. No different than
when we talk Vince Worldford versus Casey Hampton in Pittsburgh,
we wont Casey any roast.
Speaker 5 (40:00):
They're gonna say, Yo, give me the guy.
Speaker 4 (40:01):
They got the championships with those stats and that's like
I said, man, that the second part of both team sports.
You can be a better player, but it's the team.
Team matters, man.
Speaker 2 (40:13):
Yeah, no doubt, no doubt, And it's yeah as much
as it it's cool to see Casey get a shout there.
I mean, you can't go wrong with either of those guys.
Absolutely all That entire defensive front is just insane. But
nice to see Cam get a shout out there.
Speaker 4 (40:27):
It's some dudes out here though, man, because I'm like, y'all,
look at this d long like Chris Jones, Claiz and
Donald Ah. So these are just strictly the interior. Have
you on the interior part right here?
Speaker 3 (40:38):
Imagine an interior.
Speaker 2 (40:39):
Imagine an interior of your defensive line with Aaron Donald,
Vince will Fork and JJ Watt.
Speaker 4 (40:44):
Good look like Bro, as J says Kevin wall is
it Cam Heyward on, you'll practice squad?
Speaker 5 (40:50):
Good luck, Bro?
Speaker 3 (40:53):
All right, So here's what we're gonna do.
Speaker 5 (40:54):
We gotta squad, practice squad.
Speaker 2 (40:57):
We've got to close down the first hour here other side.
Let's do edge rushers and then we'll get in.
Speaker 5 (41:02):
We'll get den tackles.
Speaker 4 (41:04):
Bump that. Where's my dog, Kyle, Williams Day, Cal Williams.
Don't get no love. That's another dude. That's all right.
I'm just it's the dudes out here, bro. I know
if you give me some multiple other.
Speaker 3 (41:14):
No Geno Atkins love on this list.
Speaker 4 (41:17):
Gino shout the Gino. You know Gena was a dog. Absolutely,
let's do.
Speaker 2 (41:22):
We'll do edge rushers in secondary to UH to kick
off the second hour. Then we'll hop to the offensive
side of ESPN's All quarter century team list. Here as
we roll along, it's the Steelers Blitz on Steelers Nation
Radio on the Steelers Audio Network
