This conversation feels like you're sharing a warm cup of coffee in a diner with an old friend as they share their life and experiences. It was a privilege to have Gary Sanders join us to share many stories from his life.
⚠️ Before you listen, we do want to give you a trigger warning for this episode. Violence against children and racially motivated crimes and attacks are discussed throughout this conversation. ⚠️
Gary was born and raised in St. Louis (if you see him around today, he is most likely decked out in St. Louis Cardinals gear). Being born in the 1950s into a strong Christian family is something that Gary is thankful for as he expresses, he's not sure what life would've looked like without the protection and love of God. At a very young age Gary experienced violence against him because of the color of his skin. Your heart will break as you hear about some of Gary's experiences of violent discrimination, racism and the adversity that brought, particularly in his schooling. You will be amazed at how Gary was able to pick himself up and keep going despite what was happening around him. He was drafted for Vietnam and settled with the Air Force because of the opportunity to play baseball during his time in service. This led to a years long career as an Air Traffic Controller for the Air Force. You'll hear about how Gary was able to achieve his bachelor's and master's degrees, heal from cancer, his passion for young people through coaching, his love for dogs, his desire to serve and love how God loves us - Sarah and Gary cover a lot of ground! You will be challenged and blessed by this conversation. As Gary and Sarah both say, we don't have to allow our differences to divide us but rather we can come together in Christ centered community celebrating that we are all children of God.
