Rob Tod is a dear friend that has inspired me doing things his way - always blazing his own path.
We hung out and talked story in the trailer, energized with killer breakfast burritos, and topped off with a couple of bourbon shots. Yep, 10am Pacific Standard Time!
Listen how Rob began his brewery in 1995, learning what led up to his entrepreneural endeavorers Just one year earlier, he worked at Otter Creek Brewery—doing everything from washing kegs, to cleaning tanks, and brewing beer. Rob rented a corner spot of a warehouse in an industrial park christening it Allagash Brewing Company.
He literally welded together a 15-barrel brewing system, jackhammering a few drains into the floor. After a couple of pilot batches, he started brewing in earnest. Rob’s goal was to start with one beer, and one beer only; a Belgian-style wheat beer called, Allagash White.
You’ll learn how he first started selling his craft beer and why customers would ask, “What's wrong with it?” Rob shares his venture of being true to what you love, elaborating how a processed driven company succeeds to create the highest quality, innovative, and traditional beers possible.
Allagash Brewing Company has never set goals to win awards, but low and behold, Allagash White won its first Gold Medal at the European Beer Star Awards event.
Following are Allagash Brewing Company’s accolades to date:
- James Beard Award 2019 - Ohh Ya!
- Gold, European Beer Star 2017
- Gold, GABF 2015
- Gold, World Beer Cup 2012
- Gold, World Beer Cup 2010

- Gold, GABF 2005
- Silver, World Beer Cup 2004
- Gold, GABF 2002
- Bronze, World Beer Cup 2002
- Gold, World Beer Cup 1998
Rob explains what the purpose and core values of his company are and the importance of philanthropy and transparency as B-Corp. HIs philosophy encompasses sharing innovations and industry information with American breweries.
Empowering his employees to innovate and be creative, he inspires them to collaboratively craft their own beer recipes on the job.
Work-life balance has always been paramount at Allagash. Voted one of the Best Places to Work in Maine, for seven straight years, “ABC” offers a generous benefit plan including: volunteer time off, a trip to Belgium after five years of employment, post-shift beers, and more.
"Being a B Corp gives us specific structure to continue to improve the lives of our employees long into the future."
Please pass this along to any craft beer lovers you know! Rob IS the OG of the industry and his stories are legendary! Cheers! Salud! Chin Chin! S’Lainte!
