It is still an sec team texas.
Over this week, only eightteams from the SEC are in the

number one in April is good andall.
You want to be number one inOmaha when it's all said and
done, in June.
Quick thoughts, man.
Does this shock you against theelite competition in the
country?
Speaker 3 (02:11):
No, it doesn't shock
me, man.
He was already doing things inthe SEC.
We got him and we're stilldoing things in the SEC.

It's been a revolving door ofbeing number one.
We got a fun show.
Are you ready?
Let's ride?
Let's ride Ground ball.
(03:15):
This could be trouble the outat first and this one's in the
books.
Sonia gets his first save andTexas wins the series 5-4.
The books Sonia gets his firstsave and Texas wins the series
five for the final.
All right, stevie, on the road, longhorns went to Lexington,
kentucky scrappy bunch nothaving the year that they had
(03:37):
hoped.
You know they're not.
They were in Omaha recently andnow you see Texas.
They got challenged on the road.
On the road is hard for anysport and we're halfway through
this deal, or a little pasthalfway.
You've got a big month.
The rest of this month You'vegot a really challenging month
(03:57):
of May, and that was the firsttime, in my opinion, that Texas
was truly tested.
I mean, they swept throughGeorgia, the top home run
hitting team in the country, andthen Georgia takes care of
business against Arkansas.
It's just up and down, up anddown.
What do you like, what you seefrom this team?
Because this is the time ofyear when your team really
(04:19):
builds an identity in baseballand identity in baseball.
Speaker 3 (04:22):
Yeah, I think I don't
know if it's being up and down
the other teams I think thatwe're just that good right now
that we are making them look badand then when they go out to
play someone else, then theylook, you know, fantastic.
I think that our pitching isgood.
We're getting the bats on theball.
(04:45):
I think all around baseballit's good baseball being played
by these guys.
That's just my opinion.
I'm not the baseball experttalking about football I can do
that all day.
But from the untrained eye wehave a guess.
Speaker 4 (04:58):
Shout out to Hard

We try to bring them businessand it's scratch your back,

They've scratched your back andthat's a lot of back.
And tell me, you are the face, the unofficial face, of
(05:18):
Hardgrove Roofing.
The marketing slogan it's shortand simple.
Stevie Lee does it best.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
My guys over at
Hardgrove Roofing man call them
Hard Grove Roofing Know who's onyour roof, man that's beautiful
.
Speaker 4 (05:31):
I could not do that
any better, my friend.
Hey, let's not hesitate, man.
I love this person, man, he isfun, he knows a lot about
baseball.
Let's bring him in.
Look at our guy, the TyHarrington.
(05:52):
He's done a lot of things, played baseball for Texas when
they were going to Omaha everyyear which is the expectation
these days and has always beenWinningest coach in Texas State
baseball history.
But, more importantly, a friendof mine, a friend of Stevie's
and a friend of the podcast TyHarrington.
In his office he always makestime for everybody.
(06:14):
I don't know how you find thetime to do all that you do.
Speaker 6 (06:17):
Well, first of all,
stevie, everybody does need to
know who's on their roof, and sothat is that is important, and
and so the does need to knowwho's on the roof, and so that
is important, and so Iappreciate the introduction and
the opportunity to hang out withyou guys this afternoon and
talk baseball, truly something Ilove, and certainly college
(06:38):
baseball more than anything else, and a lot of people get
confused about that and they'llwant to talk more about the
professional side of baseball.
I like professional baseball.
I still have a handful ofplayers that are playing.
I pay attention to it.
It is something I enjoy but notlove like I do.
College baseball and the peoplethat have been a part of it, the
(06:59):
people that are still a part ofit, have been a huge part of my
life, and so this is.
You know, anytime somebodyreally wants to discuss it and
talk about it, I'll give them mytwo cents, right, wrong or
indifferent.
The only thing it's importantto is me, and the rest of
everybody else can just delve toit any way they want to, but
certainly appreciate you guyshaving me today 100%.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
And Stevie.
A fun fact about Ty he made aseamless transition from
coaching to his career now, andnow he also on the side he
announces baseball.
I listened to watch a littlebit of his broadcast this past
weekend.
It's a natural, and Texas fanshave been absolutely spoiled
(07:44):
with Keith Moreland, gregSwindell and now Ty Harrington.
Ty, you heard Stevie talk aboutit and you hear me talk about
it a lot, either through text orwhatnot.
But what's your take on this UTbaseball team?
Is this typical Schlossnageltype of team and style?
Does any of this surprise youhow quickly it's happened?
Speaker 6 (08:07):
I don't know that
surprise is the right word.
I don't know if expect is theright word.
I don't know if any of those,um you know describe it
completely, because there was anunknown to all this to most of
us, and that is going in the sec.
And that's the part that youdon't know till you know.
Um, you know, you can think youknow, and, and then all of a
(08:30):
sudden you get in and you findout there's a little more to it.
But what I'm not surprisedabout, or what I am not confused
about, maybe that's the bestword for me.
And again, it's my take on it isit?
You know, Jim has always beenone of the most detail-oriented
people in our business.
He's also been and I don't do agood job of saying this or
(08:50):
describing this.
I probably ought to reach outto AI or something and figure
this out someday, but thereality is is that he's a
forward thinker.
He's on the cutting edge of theway our game is being played,
but also the elements of ourgame that can make you
successful, and Jim has alwaysbeen on the front of that right.
(09:12):
He's not chasing a trend.
He's either creating it or partof it, and I think that's
important, because what thattells you is that he's a guy
that wakes up every day with arenewed attitude about how do I
make this better?
I'm not satisfied with what itis.
I have to make it better.
In order to make it better, yougot to get out of being stuck
(09:32):
in what you're doing all thetime, and so that gets.
That's my best way to describeJim's attitude and his
personality.
By the way, I think he alsotakes on the responsibility.
He understands that.
You know the expectations ofeverywhere he's been.
I think ultimately, when hetook the job here at Texas, he
(09:54):
had a really good understandingand appreciation of what he was
going to be involved with.
Jim is in my mind.
Jim is in my mind as preparedas any one person.
They could have gone out andgotten in this position to take
it on and understand andappreciate any expectations and
also lead it at this point.
Speaker 4 (10:16):
Go ahead, go ahead,
steve.
Speaker 3 (10:19):
Well, from what I'm
seeing, I met him at a
fundraiser with the Texas OneFund and he's sharp.
And when you said a forwardthinker, I didn't have the words
for it either, but I thinkthat's perfect for what you said
Forward thinking I think youare AI already.
(10:41):
Stevie, I'm an A something Idon't know about the I part of
it, but I am definitely an Asomething, yeah, so, but that
was perfect man, forwardthinking and setting the trend.
I think that you know CDC wentout there and that's a great
(11:02):
hire man and it's paying offright away to go out and get
them.
So I like what they're doing.
I like his mindset when I methim and you know, retaining and
some really, really, reallyimportant people on staff and
some to even stay on staff overthere.
So that's, you know.
Someone said it the other day,in fact, I heard Bob Shipley say
(11:25):
it when he was a head coach hewanted people that were really
smart smarter than him aroundhim as his assistants.
So I think Jim is doing thesame thing.
Speaker 4 (11:35):
So I think Jim, is
doing the same thing.
I know, ty, you never reallyexperienced a down period during
your time as a player at TexasI mean, stevie, to put it in
perspective that decade of the80s.
Speaker 6 (11:50):
correct me if I'm
wrong, ty, there could have been
six national championships inthat decade alone for Texas.
Yeah, well, so if we're goingto go down that road, I'm going
to go down it briefly, because Iwas the 83 team was the year
before I got here which won anational title, correct, right?
And so I think the 81 team hadgone to Omaha as well, and I
(12:14):
think maybe the 80 team orsomething.
But then, 84, my freshman yearwe got beaten the national
championship game 85, we gotbeaten the national championship
game 86, we got beaten theregional by the team that won
the national championship 87, wegot beaten the semifinals in
Omaha on the national championsand then in 1989, my second year
(12:36):
on the staff, we got thenational championship.
Now, having said all that andit's as impressive as it sounds,
and it is impressive, it's alsoyou didn't hear me say we won a
national championship.
And so that's the part thattells you a story about a lot of
different things.
When it tells you the story andthe tradition, the history of
this great baseball program thatnobody is any better than the
(13:00):
University of Texas or has moretradition in it, what it also
tells you is that we're measuredby national titles.
Yeah, doug Hodo, who was one ofmy teammates and a dear friend
of mine, whose son played atTexas as well, was a center
fielder Texas as well was acenter fielder made a comment
one time after we finishedsecond again in 1985, which
might have been the best teamI'd ever seen or been a part of
(13:22):
by far and he said you know weget on the bus.
And he said you know the onlypeople who remember who finished
second.
And I remember I turned to himand I said who he goes, the
people who do, that's it.
And and so when you, when youput that in reality, matter of
fact, I think that was the 84team I'm sorry it was Fullerton
(13:42):
had beat us, augie and them hadbeat us.
And then we sat as a teamoutside the Yellow Belly school
bus that we rode on back thenfrom the Holodome to Rosenblatt
Stadium, and with the guydriving our bus it had on a hat
that said I got stoned.
When, anyway, when we got tothe stadium, we we were standing
(14:04):
, we were outside the stadiumafter the heartbreak of getting
beat, we were waiting for coachgush and that our two other
teammates billy base, I thinkand and maybe greg swindell, to
come out out of the press roomand we were standing there when
he made that comment and therewas a rally of.
Even amongst the tears ofdefeat and disappointment of
losing a national title, therewas this conversation amongst
(14:26):
the guys who were returning thatwe would return.
And again, 364 days later, wedid return.
But that was also theexpectations of what texas
baseball was about, and andwinning national championships
is part of that and and look, there's very few people that can
honestly, honestly talk aboutthat.
(14:48):
They're going to go accomplishand have an opportunity to win a
national.
Speaker 4 (14:52):
Now you look at this
current team.
They're now ranked number onein the country, a ranking that
this program is used to.
In April, as Ty will vouch forabout this time frame a couple
more weeks in April is whenteams really, really really
start becoming what they areidentity-wise, but second-ranked
(15:13):
ERA in the country, pitchingstaff 3.03.
The arm farm pitching coach atTexas is known as and 29th in
the country with over half ahundred dingers.
Ty, we'll begin with you, andStevie you follow up.
Ty, you look at what they'veaccomplished.
I know it's a great resume, butwhat have you seen from the
(15:37):
eyes of a former collegebaseball coach that makes you
think that they can maintainthis and be one of those eight
in Omaha?
Speaker 6 (15:47):
Well, I mean, you
obviously have to start on the
pitching side of it, and youknow, when you talk about the
arm farm and you talk about MaxWiener and the job that Max has
done has been, you know, to me,unreal.
He hasn't had a ton of timewith these guys, right, this is
(16:09):
just the.
This is just the look at whatyou see in a hurry of putting a
team together, and what you'regoing to see in the future is
going to be even more profoundand even more in-depth of, in my
opinion, from the pitchingperspective, of what Texas is
going to represent.
But we're going to stay in thisseason and in this group, and
what you see from the beginningis, like you know and I even
(16:31):
think Coach Floshinger wouldtell you this, he was fortunate
to this that there were severalhitters, older hitters, that
returned and they were able totalk a few in the stand, and
then so you have a nucleus fromthe offensive perspective of it.
Now, the pitching side of it,there was just a handful, but
what you get a quick glimpse ofbecause of the portal and
(16:54):
because of Coach Flotsnagel'sstaff and Stevie referred to it
just a minute ago and thequality of it and how you
assemble a staff.
He was able to get into theportal and get Dylan Valantis,
burns, mendoza I mean the listgoes on Rodriguez, the list goes
on of guys that have made ahuge impact.
(17:15):
They had two weeks to do this, right?
So that tells you that thespeed that they work and the
efficiency that they work andthe list of players that they
keep on a ready mark of.
Hey, we got to go replace thesecond baseman, bam, here's a
guy.
Hey, we got to go get four arms, bam, here are the four best in
the country, right.
(17:36):
So that tells you first aboutthe recruiting piece of, and the
organization of what that lookslike and how that is.
That's a huge piece of CoachSchlossnagel and his staff.
And then then you get to thepart where you know they were
able to bring in some arms andthen redefine some of the arms
that were already here, you know.
You look at Dre and what he'sdone with the arm angle change,
(17:59):
right, and he now is pitching ata productive level, a much more
productive level, and he'senjoying his six-year senior
right.
And so then you see the youngarms and what they've been able
to do.
Dylan Volantis has been to meone of the most impressive, you
know.
Yeah, I mean, this is a GregSwindell-type guy that's out
(18:22):
there pitching.
His ability to execute in bigmoments is huge.
He was asked to come in in themiddle of the game in the
Georgia series with a runner on,I think, or two guys on, and to
face one of the best hitters inthe SEC at the time, slugging
percentage-wise, and he landsthe first breaker on the first
pitch and you could just hearthe air just drop out of the
(18:43):
stadium and really it was thehitter as much as anybody going.
Oh my gosh, look at thatbreaker.
That's tough to deal with, right, and it was so impressive
for him to land it.
And you know.
And so there's a mixture of, uh,the recruiting in such a short
term, portal wise, there's amixture of this staff getting to
(19:04):
do their job and and too low.
You look at the defensive pieceof what troy does and and then
nolan kane on the recruitingside of what he does and his
reputation of having that listof people to go get in that
short time frame to bring hereand to accomplish that, and then
, and then obviously max andwhat he's done with it with the
(19:26):
arms.
So I think your originalquestion was what is it?
And I and it is the pitchingside of me, because it gives you
a chance when you had a threeera.
You're, you're now playing, youknow, know, a four-run game.
And how do you accomplishscoring four runs in a game?
And their offense, with a lotof guys you know, returning from
a year ago, they're able to doit.
(19:50):
I would tell you the second mostimportant thing to me that I've
seen and I know my time'sgetting up but the second most
important thing that I have seenis they were one of the most
opportunistic teams I've seen, and what I mean by that.
If you look at the runs scoredthis year and you go and you
(20:10):
look at how they score, if youwalk a guy or if you walk them,
hit them or you make an error,it's like they're just waiting
for it and when they do, theytake advantage of it.
Somebody could give you anopportunity, hand, gift it to
you, give you the greatest thingyou've ever seen in your life
and you not do anything with itand you get nothing.
But when somebody gives yousomething like that an error or
(20:35):
a base hit or I I'm sorry a walkor hit batsman, or you earn
that piece of it right, or youearn your opportunity.
You still have to takeadvantage of it, and they do a
tremendous job of transferringyour mistake into your fault, to
your loss, and that's whatthey're really, really good at,
and it's like they just sit overthere and they go.
(20:55):
Oh my God, they did it, theymade a mistake.
Here we go, and I mean you knowthey hit you right in the mouth
with it, and so to me those arethe two most you know.
There's a ton of stats.
I mean you know they're hitting.286 as a team.
They're you know the things thatthey do defensively.
They're at 976.
I know Jim well enough to knowhe'd love to see it around 980,
(21:17):
981 fielding percentage, right, but if you go and you look at
the last play of the Kentuckygame, jalen Ford's just got to
make a great play on a doubleplay to end the game, right, and
they just continually come up.
Schuessler playing first baselooks like he's been playing it
since he was in diapers and theyjust moved him over there.
He's been playing it since hewas in diapers and they just
(21:39):
moved him over there.
And I mean it just is.
You know, the detail of theirdefense is just so good.
And look the ERA.
I'll give you an interestingstat.
Don't you think there's only a.26% difference in batting
average in the SEC between Texasand the SEC right now?
That's it, but yet they're 13-2.
Only a .26%, yet they're 13-2.
(22:02):
That tells you that when theyget an opportunity, they create
opportunities.
When they get them, they takeadvantage of them and then they
pitch at a high level and theypitch.
It seems at times they pitcheven at a higher level at the
back end of it, and now, afterthe last weekend, they've
created with Sonia and thoseguys coming through and throwing
so good and Burns those guysthrowing so good for them and
(22:24):
they had to have them lastweekend and they were able to do
that so much more than youprobably wanted, stevie, I'm
sure it really was much morethan you wanted at any one point
in time.
So if you weren't a baseballexpert, you can at least act
like you heard from somebody whothinks he knows something about
the game.
Speaker 3 (22:43):
Dude, you said
everything that I was going to
say and more.
I was going to say.
What's going to keep us in thisnumber one?
Hopefully, keep us in thisnumber one ranking is we had
some good players last year andCoach went out and got some
really good players for thisyear through the portal.
(23:05):
I mean, this portal thing isall new, but Coach is, like you
said, cutting edge on theforefront of things and going to
go get players that he want andneed in his program.
It's the players that we haveon the roster nowadays, Like
it's and you see it in footballnow too.
You know, go hit the portalhard and get the people that you
(23:27):
need and want on your team, andI think that that's what Coach
has done.
That that's going to keep us inthis ranking and keeping these
stats of the.
That's an amazing stat that yousaid about the ERA, how slim,
thin it is, but we are 13-2.
So, yeah, that's amazing, andyou know Sean ask him another
(23:51):
question, so I can just sit backand listen.
Speaker 4 (23:52):
you know Well, real
quick, this is just the schedule
through the first weekend ofMay, beginning with.
You're watching this episoderight now while they're playing
UT Rio Grande Valley.
Honestly, ty and Stevie RioGrande Valley out of the
Southland Conference, a newermember of that conference, they
(24:14):
could potentially, if they don'twin that conference tournament,
there's a good chance UTRGVcould get an at-large.
Speaker 6 (24:26):
And you have some
ties to that program through the
coaches.
Yeah, so Jim and I both do.
And it starts with Jim first, that Derek Matlock, the head
coach at UTRGV, was a long-term,really successful high school
coach and Jim hired him as avolunteer assistant.
Derek wanted to get involved inthe college game and he did for
a couple years and then had toget out and then went back into
(24:47):
the high school and so when Iwas looking for a second
assistant first time I wasreally going to have a full-time
second assistant, believe it ornot and so I called Jim.
Jim and I had a lot of you know, close ties in a lot of areas
about doing and consulted withhim about, you know, a hiring of
a coach, and he brought Derek'sname up.
(25:07):
I drove up, met with Derek, wasreally impressed, and Derek is
a really, really hardworkingdude.
Now I'm telling you like he isone of those guys.
A lot of guys like to use theword grinder.
He is that 100%.
He spends a lot of time makinghimself and the team and the
(25:28):
program and the people aroundhim better.
Tonight you'll see the UTRGVteam.
They're good, they're right,they're in a possibility of an
at-large position later on as itgoes on out of the Southland,
and so they got a chance to alsowin that league, and so I don't
think tonight you would seethem go to their number one guy.
(25:49):
It's a short week, rememberthat too.
Now it's a short week comingout of the weekend because it's
Easter weekend, so they'll starttheir series on Thursday.
A lot of times those guys whowould leave with their ace on
Tuesday nights that's theirbullpen night on a Friday night
start.
So I don't foresee thatprobably happening tonight,
(26:11):
unless you know who knows.
But anyway, so, derek, it is agood program.
He's good at what he does, um,and I'm anxious to see them.
I'll have the game tonight, uh,and I'll get a chance to see
him.
But, um, I'm looking in theretoo.
You guys and auburn's instarting on thursday.
I had auburn in uh globe lifeback in february and uh, at one
(26:33):
of the tournaments and theyplayed.
Three freshmen started, afreshman on the mound, relieved,
with a couple freshmen.
I remember telling myself thatand thinking to myself if in
April, if those freshmen arestill in the lineup, those guys
have a chance to be pretty good, because by the time you're a
freshman in April, you eitherget really tired and you play
out and don't really understandthe process of how hard this is,
(26:56):
or you're that talented andthat good and then you just take
off and these guys have playedat a high level and they're good
.
It's going to be a tremendouschallenge.
It'll be a tremendous series, starting on Thursday and make
sure everybody knows it's notFriday this weekend, it is a
Thursday, Friday, saturdayseries because of the Easter
(27:17):
Sunday.
They are, they're really good.
Then you look at the end ofthat.
When you look at it at Arkansaslet's just play hypothetical,
let's just say that then you gotthe Aggies Somewhere in there.
You left that piece off.
I'm not sure how you would dothat, but you did.
Speaker 4 (27:37):
I think it's
following Arkansas, right yeah.
Speaker 6 (27:43):
But think about what
that's going to look like and
you know, with the Arkansasseries, if Texas wins this
weekend and Arkansas wins, ifthey have the Aggies this
weekend, and what that's goingto look like in Fayetteville and
how exciting that will be.
And you find yourself Steve, Isee you kind of smirking, but
you know what I'm about to sayis true.
(28:04):
You find yourself every weekendgoing wait a minute, they're
playing who this weekend and theother team's playing who this
weekend, and you just it'sunreal when you start talking
about the SEC, whether it'sfootball, whether it's
basketball, whether it'sbaseball, and you look at the
matchups every weekend andthere's a top five matchup or a
top ten matchup every weekend.
(28:26):
It's beautiful.
Speaker 4 (28:38):
Ty Heritage.
His stories are phenomenal.
Not only will he educate you onthis great game and life, but
there are some comical momentsthis man was a part of and he
shared a few on here and inperson, and I will never
disclose those stories, whichwere never told in front of a
mic, but is there one story thatyou can share in front of these
(29:00):
cameras and that mic in frontof you?
That's just as amusing today asit was when it happened.
Speaker 6 (29:07):
Yeah, this happened
Friday and this is new and it's
really kind of funny but it'salso kind of bragging and but
yet I don't want everybody totake it bragging, unless you
want to, and that's fine and I'mokay with that what I'm about
to say.
So this past, this past Friday,I was invited to go play in a
(29:30):
golf tournament for GJ Kinney, who's a really a tremendous
coach.
The head coach at Texas StateUniversity, x Longhorn, himself
played there his freshman yearand he and Quan Cosby were big
buddies.
And so Quan and I went down togo play in GJ's tournament, a
big golf tournament.
A buddy of mine David Bailiffhelps put it on, he used to be
the old football coach and sothis buddy of mine, mark
(29:52):
Parmalee, who owns a bunch ofcoffee shops and on the ground
which is unreal and you know SanMarcos and the Brown Bowls and
San Antonio area, and he's doneunbelievable, and so he invited
us to come play in histournament.
They had two teams, so wedecided that we're going to play
in eightsome.
Well, we don't, you know like,we were going to just go by our
rules, and Kwan's convinced thatif you play in eightsome and
(30:16):
you're to scrambling, it goesfaster.
So we were going to test thisout.
So when I agreed to play in thisoriginally, I said, hey guys,
look, I can't play the wholetime, and if y'all need to find
somebody else, that's fine.
I got to do a game that nightand I got to lead by 415.
And it started at one, and youguys know how long those
tournaments take, right, and so,anyway, we're making our way
(30:36):
around.
So, don coriel, who's theathlete director at texas state,
I saw donnie and I said, donnie, will you do me a favor, man,
pick me up at like four.
Have somebody pick me up at 415, or you come pick me up.
I gotta get out of here and godo the texas state game tonight.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah and uh,so uh, as we get around to the,
there's a part three that wecome up to, and this is the
(30:58):
first time anybody had ever toldme that when you turn 60 years
old which is what I am when youturn 60, I'll keep that from all
the ladies.
I'll hold that back if you canmake it.
Speaker 4 (31:08):
It's not on the
resume, it's not on Bumble.
Speaker 6 (31:11):
So they said when
you're 60, you can hit from the
white.
Well, I've never done it before, and so I was like I'll hit
from the white t's I'm I got youknow, we'll see now the groups
I play with.
I can't because I'm a I'm, I'ma sub 10, if any of that matter.
So so I get to the part three, they get this big, beautiful
truck and I was like, oh, Igotta back up to the blue and do
(31:35):
you?
I get home one.
I drive of here with this truckin my mind, and obviously I
didn't I hit it way over or hitit on the green, but it gets
better.
So, this one, I was like, allright, man, I got like a couple
more holes and I got to get outof here.
So they were late trying tofind me and I was like, well, it
doesn't matter, I'll play onemore hole.
So we're, we're, we're at um,at, uh, plum creek and uh.
(32:00):
So there's a short part three,two holes I don't know what
number it is and and, uh, we getup to it.
And then now, because we, andso the blues and there's me in
the dining den go down to thewhites, right, yeah, I'm okay
with it and, uh, I walked downthere and had a whole one and
(32:23):
knocked it in.
So now we got eight guys andeverybody's going nuts, I'm
going nuts and we, and we hit itright there.
But our buddies had three orfour holes right.
There's this.
You know, we got a pretty goodsized party going on and I know
I had to do a tv party going onand so, and now I have to do a
tv deal that night, right?
So I'm going out for free inthis whole thing, and so
everybody's dancing around.
(32:44):
I'm like what I'm talking about?
Now you get holes and ones.
It gets expensive.
So and I'm playing with an ace,and so I'm like, all right, I'm
gonna give you my credit card.
So I literally hit a hole in one, get in the golf cart and leave
.
And I'm thinking to myself, man, I got that pretty easy, I had
to paint it.
(33:04):
I get a phone call.
The guy calls me later and goeshey, he ain't getting off that
easy, we're on the next mile, and later on we're over the next
, and it's on you.
Or over the next week or twowith the team, and it's on you.
So it's what I did the lastround Hold them on, dance around
, hop in, get me up and down, and then you're far down, I'm
(33:29):
down.
I got to get back here, cool.
So that's all I got today, nothing more than that man, that
story will live for anotherweek.
Speaker 4 (33:40):
That feel good story
man, an ace.
And then you got to go to work.
Talk about that.
I'd have called in that day.
I can see Kwan saying that no,no, no, you're going by that
liquor store.
Yeah Ty Harrington man, greatjob man Proud of Waco Midway
High School.
Speaker 6 (34:02):
Indeed, I didn't hear
I think.
Speaker 4 (34:13):
Can you still hear us
?
I think we're losing yoursignal.
Yeah, hey, oh, you can.
Brother, I owe you big time.
I owe you lunch at DirtyMartins.
Speaker 6 (34:28):
Indeed it is.
Let's do it, my friend.
Speaker 4 (34:33):
Hey, always
appreciate you and we're going
to get together soon and good tosee you Kind of back in Austin,
but you know You're stillliving in God's country 2.0, new
Braunfels I won't reveal where, but man, thank you.
Speaker 3 (34:48):
Thanks, Ty, for
coming on.
Man, I appreciate you.
Speaker 6 (34:52):
You got it, fellas.
See you again soon.
Speaker 4 (35:06):
See you soon, Stevie
Lee.
How about that?
That?
Was that guy, man, he has awealth of knowledge and stories,
not limited to baseball.
But man, I can see that aneight, an eightsome I've never
said that before that could getkind of dirty real quick.
An eightsome.
(35:26):
Absolutely.
Hey real quick.
Stevie, I know that you went toa spring practice.
You know spring is what it is.
There is no spring game thisyear and a lot of programs are
following suit.
What have you heard?
Any quick nugget about UTspring football?
Speaker 3 (35:51):
There's some names
coming out of spring football.
I was talking about it the daybefore yesterday, but I'm glad
that Sark, in his pressconference, spoke about some
guys, and what I am seeing, though, is the D-line.
Me, I'm a defensive line.
It's the pass rush with StevieLee.
(36:11):
I'm a defensive line guy.
What I saw, man, is those aresome big, strong guys that are.
You know.
Some are no names right now,but you are going to get to know
these guys really well.
They're just playing well.
It's amazing to see what CoachBecton is doing with these guys,
(36:33):
being that big but also stayingquick and nimble on their feet.
So for me, man, I mean you guyscan talk about wide receivers
and running backs andquarterbacks all day.
I'm going to, I am the D-linespecialist, and I want to see
this D-line.
I mean, the heart and soul ofthe defense is the defensive
(36:55):
line 100% it is.
Speaker 4 (36:59):
They create leverage
and hold up.
Everybody talks about old lineopening holes.
Defensive line can create holesfor linebackers and DBs to
shoot through.
Speaker 3 (37:08):
Absolutely.
That's what I said on mycommercial with Hargrove.
You put your butt into thatguard and that way my linebacker
gets free to do what Sean.
Speaker 4 (37:17):
Free to do what.
What does this have to do aboutwith roofing?
Get out.
Hey, that's a good nugget, because everyone you know no
offense to the skill kids and Iknow everybody's excited about
Arch Manning taking over andrunning backs healthier if you
(37:39):
will, and the O-line development.
But they are low on scholarshipreceivers and they went out and
you and I had talked about it.
They went out and got one.
This kid, emmitt Mosley, comesfrom a Notre Dame family.
His mom and dad.
Dad played football at NotreDame, the mom played soccer at
(38:00):
Notre Dame.
He goes to Stanford.
So incredibly intelligent kid.
Correct me if I'm wrong, Ithink he had.
He started developing towardthe end of the year, scored four
or five touchdowns, receivingthe last four games of the year
last season.
So he's transferring to Texas.
(38:21):
Emmitt Mosley.
Speaker 3 (38:24):
Yep, and I heard that
he can blow the top off of
defense.
He can get over the top and wegot a quarterback that can get
it to him.
I think Arch is really goodwith his touch on the ball and
they can throw the long ballpretty good.
So I think this is this couldbe good kind of a match made in
(38:46):
heaven or a match made in theportal.
Speaker 4 (38:48):
So that's right, you
know.
And speaking of receivers, former or man K VIP alumni Ed
small and his dad, clint, andthe small family they were
honored at the greater Austinsports foundation and the small
family they were honored at theGreater Austin Sports Foundation
.
Ed Small named the GreaterAustin Sports Foundation's male
(39:09):
high school athlete of the year.
He's already at TCU earlyenrollee and so congrats to him,
and he is, he's just going to.
I think he's going to receivesome playing time at TCU this
year, maybe as a punt returnspecialist.
(39:30):
I mean, Ed Small is special.
You talk about all of thechanges in college athletics.
There's a ton of them, stevie, and you know it.
You know where I'm going withthis and you know it.
You know where I'm going withthis.
Nico LaMalleva, the quarterbackat Tennessee.
I don't know the whole story, Ijust know his dad's involved as
(39:54):
the agent, so to speak, andwhomever else.
What's your thoughts on this?
Because his asking price wasthey want to renew their
contract.
Nil asked an ungodly amount, did not report to an important
practice meeting and, before Iget your take on this, I like
(40:14):
the way josh heupel responded toit.
He, they parted ways and this, this is Hype Hypel's reaction on
Niko.
Speaker 5 (40:23):
It's unfortunate.
You know just the situation andwhere we're at with Niko.
I want to thank him foreverything that he's done since
he's gotten here.
You know that's as a recruit towho he was as a player and how
he competed inside of thebuilding, and so a great
appreciation for that side of it.
(40:45):
Obviously, we're moving forwardas a program without him.
You know I said it to the guystoday there's no one that's
bigger than the Power T.
Speaker 4 (40:56):
So let me ask you
this two-part question your
thoughts on these kids are some, not all than negotiating,
requesting more.
And number two, I think, whatHeupel did do you agree or
disagree that this is thebeginning of a trend?
(41:18):
But it's also going back like atennis match program saying, no
, you're just one person, you'repart of the team.
Speaker 3 (41:29):
Yeah, man, I don't
know all the facts and I don't
think anyone outside knows allthe facts, but what we do know
is this is pretty wild.
Like this is.
This is unregulated.
You know wild, wild West.
You know that word has beenthrown around because you know
(41:54):
you have, as an athlete, youhave a shelf life.
You know father time isundefeated, right, right and.
And so you know you want to getas much as you can out of your
athletic abilities and your NIL,your name, image and likeness
as much as you can.
Now also, you also havecommitments on top of that,
(42:16):
right, and so there's someobligations to fulfill your
commitments, but there'sobligations to fulfill your
potential and your likeness,right.
So there's a, there's astruggle right there on the on
the player.
The other thing is is we don'tknow all the facts, like, did
(42:37):
they promise this kid something?
Did they promise this kidsomething?
And then when he get there hedoesn't get it?
Or also, did this kid all of asudden go and say I think that
(42:58):
some success has got this, so Ibelieve that I should get this?
There are some instances at theUniversity of Texas right after
the game in Dallas against OhioState, some of the kids book a
meeting.
The very next meeting is withthe GM at the University of
Texas, because some other schoolwould say I'll get you this
amount to come with us, but hewants to stay.
(43:20):
But you know, it's a businessnow but he wants to stay.
But it's a business now.
I mean it's the businessdecision of do I leave that
money and stay here or do I talkto the GM and say will you
match that?
It's the wild, wild west?
Yes, I was born 20 years tooearly because I would love to
get in on some of this money.
But also, with all of thishappening, I think that we're
(43:46):
going to lose a little bit ofthe spirit of college football.
Speaker 4 (43:51):
That's a great
transition to Steve Sarkeesian
to essentially speak to membersof Congress, the lawmakers,
about NIL and not allowing it tolose some of the purity that we
have lost already of collegefootball.
Speaker 7 (44:11):
I don't think any of
us our student-athletes included
I don't think any of them wantto be employees.
They don't want to feel like anemployee, they want to feel
like a student-athlete.
And I get NIL and, believe me,I want our players to be
compensated in a way that'sright and that's fair.
But I also think we're in aspace right now where we don't
have a lot of guardrails, wedon't have a lot of regulation,
(44:33):
and I think if we don't startdoing some of this, if we don't
start finding a way to get someguardrails around this, we're
going to lose this idea of astudent athlete.
Speaker 4 (44:45):
I like it.
I think we're not going back, but there will be some
parameters soon.
I think everyone now is likeokay, we've got this in place.
It's not going anywhere.
Do you feel like there will besome hard boundaries or
parameters soon?
Speaker 3 (45:04):
feel like there will
be some hard boundaries or
parameters soon when it comes toNIL.
I don't think so, because Imean, any company can come up to
a kid and say I need your faceon my commercial.
When it comes to the revenuesharing, which is totally
different from the schools, therevenue sharing that the schools
actually, uh, paying the kidssomething I think that that is
(45:27):
right, should be regulated andwill be regulated.
Um, so there's, there's goingto be a set amount that the
school can give you but the uhor the program can give you, but
the nil deal.
You know, you know dellcomputers or oracle wants arch
(45:49):
manning you know, yeah, googlewants arch manning to say
something for them and then.
But oracle wants them andthey're both tech companies.
Well, oracle gonna have tooutbid google for that.
For arch Manning, right, that'sno regulation.
And we can't tell Arch how muchmoney he can take, except from
(46:09):
Oracle, which are billion dollarcompanies.
You know what I mean.
So I don't see a regulation onthe NIL for that.
That's your name, image andlikeness, and if your name,
image and likeness is worth acertain number, then that's the
number you're going to get,right.
So it's still going to be wildout there.
(46:31):
I mean, coach can go talk to DCall he wants to, but whatever a
company wants to pay, a companyis going to pay.
Speaker 4 (46:38):
No, I get that, but I
think more or less becoming a
1099 employee classifying theseathletes.
Well, you're not a student, you're now an employee of the
state or whatever.
Hey, this wrong nipple, theMasters logo.
(47:00):
Man, I took a nap.
I saw the last hour quickthoughts man, but I I definitely
rory mcelroy completing thegolf grand slam on his 17th
master start.
He achieved all the big ones usopen, the pga championship
twice, the open in brit and thenit's a great message because it
(47:26):
was bothering him, because it'sbeen a while since he last won
a major and for him to finallycomplete the Grand Slam.
It goes back to that old lessonyou learn in sports or just
life Keep showing up, keepshowing up, get your ass up and
keep doing it.
That's exactly what he told hisfour-year-old daughter, poppy,
(47:46):
after he won it.
Speaker 1 (47:47):
The one thing I would
say to my daughter Poppy,
that's sitting over there nevergive up on your dreams.
Never, ever give up on yourdreams.
Speaker 4 (48:02):
Keep coming back,
keep working hard, and if you
put your mind to it, you can doanything.
I love it.
Speaker 3 (48:08):
That's good Hashtag
girl dad.
What's that?
Speaker 4 (48:12):
Hashtag girl dad.
Speaker 3 (48:14):
No question, man.
I'm so glad that he said thatbecause he kept coming back and
his appointment last year whenhe didn't even talk to the media
.
I thought that he was gonna dothe same thing and choke this
year.
He had a what I put put fivefoot put just to win and then he
(48:38):
missed it and had to go playoff.
Yeah, it was very entertaining.
I loved it.
I was all about DeChambeau man.
I wanted DeChambeau to get one.
He got the lead early on andthen just kind of melted down
the rest of the day.
Basically, you know, like mygolf game, I might hit one good
(49:00):
shot.
But you know, like my golf game, I might hit one good shot.
But you know it was fun towatch him play, fun to watch him
actually win and get that greenjacket.
Speaker 4 (49:12):
As we all know,
there's a lot of innuendos with
golf and with the word strokesand everything.
This is a little montage ofgolf stroke innuendo.
Speaker 5 (49:24):
Stroking guys.
If you're going to take thatlong, you've got to get stroked.
You just have to start strokingguys.
Frustration was that if I didget stroked, how is that my
fault, you know, if thevolunteers don't tell me and I
get stroked for something that Ididn't know happened.
It kind of seems unfair.
Speaker 4 (49:43):
A lot of stroking.
You got to grab your shaft andgo Yep, hey, let's take a quick
break.
On the other side, we're goingto show an alignment with some
big-time hands, we're going totalk about staycations and we're
going to talk about Ben's bigload.
Speaker 2 (50:07):
We'll see you on the
other side.
Today is going to be anexciting day at the Hargrove
office as we bring in a localcelebrity.
Welcome the kicking phenom,bert Auburn.
Conference champion of theTexas Longhorn football team.
All-conference kicker.
He's going to be our newspokesman.
Bert's the best kicker in theconference.
He plays for the Texas Longhornfootball team.
All-conference kicker.
He's going to be our newspokesman.
Bert's the best kicker in theconference.
He plays for the TexasLonghorns.
As you can see, you know Bert'sf***ing awesome.
(50:28):
Hey, stevie.
Speaker 3 (50:30):
Dude, you're really
replacing me with a kicker?
Speaker 2 (50:32):
No, not at all, man.
Hey guys, who wants a picturewith Stevie?
Anyone.
Stevie almost won a Big 12championship, Hargrove Roofing
Know who's on your roof?
Speaker 1 (50:56):
Ben's Big Load.
Ben's Big Load by Kinsey Mazing.
This is Ben.
He's been carrying around ahuge load for weeks.
He needs to drop his load soonbefore it starts to leak.
No matter how hard he tries, hecan't seem to let it go.
He wishes he could just releaseit and watch his huge load flow
.
He tried to drop his load offat Susie's place last week, but
(51:19):
when he brought it by she saidNot here, your load reeks.
Speaker 3 (51:31):
Wow, that's deep.
It is disguised as a children'sbook, but hey, man, man was
trying to drop his load offsomewhere.
Speaker 4 (51:42):
You just can't keep
it.
College football spring seasonsare wrapping up.
You know you're being a big guy.
Y'all had some, I guess someskill competitions and make it
fun during practice, see whatlineman could catch a punt or
return it.
Well, check out this big oldlineman bumping off the corner,
(52:02):
a lineman playing a corner.
Check out the over the headgetting the eye on the ball,
tracking it both hands.
Pulled his best, drew pearson.
Just watch this man.
He's got a future, maybe aplaying receiver on a special,
uh, special set.
Speaker 5 (52:25):
Special set.
Speaker 4 (52:33):
Damn, that was a
great.
Speaker 3 (52:41):
Was that Stevie Lee?
Not me, but.
Speaker 4 (52:52):
All right, Stevie's
ATX Pro Tip what you got for us
today.
Speaker 3 (52:57):
Man what we my wife
and I we actually short story we
got kicked out of our housethis weekend.
Yeah, my daughter kicked us outof the house.
She had prom this weekend soher and some girlfriends all
went to prom together but theyneeded a house to hang out after
(53:17):
the prom and my daughter saidit's our house, y'all got to
leave.
So me and my wife packed up,packed the bag and we left.
The problem with us leaving isthat you know we're in Austin,
texas, and we will.
(53:39):
We will gladly get out of thehouse and do a staycation and we
went down to the Thompson Hotel, got a very nice room.
We got a day bed by the poolthat my wife was there from.
She was in that day bed from 11in the morning all the way
until about 6 that evening justhanging out by the pool at the
Thompson and ordering food anddrinks.
(54:02):
Uh, I joined her.
Uh, I have to do a little bitof work.
So I joined her around threeand we hung out by the pool all
evening and uh it.
And then we got done with that, took a nap and then we went
down just walking downtown, stopping, got some food.
Uh, didn't go into any bars oranything like that.
(54:24):
But we went back up to ourhotels, hung out by the hotel
bar.
You live in a fun town and justtake advantage of it.
Man, do a little staycation.
Good vibes do a littlestaycation.
People came up to us andstarted talking.
It was just fun.
So that's my ATX pro tip.
(54:45):
If you live in Austin, justexperience Austin and do a
little staycation and stay thenight out somewhere.
Speaker 4 (54:52):
The Thompson Hotel.
I'm all for it, man.
I love staycations.
I love road trips that arethere's a lot of things to do
within an hour and a half and inthe city limits.
I'm all about staying activeand doing stuff and enjoying
things like that.
We are huge advocates of that,by the way, all of us here at
(55:12):
the stories inside the man cave.
So we all know Shannon Sharp, deion Sanders and Chad Ochocinco
.
Their podcast is absolutelyhilarious.
They were talking about stripclubs and Ochocinco said I don't
like it, I don't like to behounded for money.
And then they got on the topicof wings or thighs, and this is
(55:36):
where Deion called out ShannonSharp and Ocho.
Speaker 3 (55:41):
I go get the wings.
You're no mad, you're going totake care of it.
You're no mad, you go take careof you.
No mad, you ain't going afterno wings.
You went there for the guys.
You might want the guys, butyou want no wings.
And the legs.
I like legs.
Yeah, you like a whole lot ofstuff from what I hear.
Speaker 5 (55:54):
Oh.
Speaker 1 (55:56):
Oh.
Speaker 3 (55:58):
Man, stop, I thought
you said you were done.
You said you were done.
You said you were done.
No, you walked into that one,you walked in there.
Speaker 4 (56:07):
I still don't know
how Sharp left his phone live.
It went live during someafternoon delight session.
Speaker 3 (56:16):
Yeah, yeah, but he is
definitely going to a strip
club for thighs and not legs orwings for thighs and not wings
absolutely what.
Speaker 4 (56:32):
Hey, primetime said
he hadn't been to one in 30
years.
Speaker 3 (56:36):
I can believe that.
Hey man, tell me something good.
Speaker 4 (56:43):
David.
Tell me something good mybrother.
There's so many things that aregood.
Tell me something good, mybrother, stevie Lee.
Speaker 3 (56:55):
Right now, man, the
University of Texas Longhorn
baseball team is number one inthe country.
It is beautiful outside, it'snot too brutally hot right now.
Go and and enjoy them and uh,and and uh and support them and
um, get some tickets to the gameand just go and support.
It's fun, they're number one.
They are.
(57:15):
I feel like they can sustainthis throughout the whole season
.
Go and see them now, becausethe ticket prices are going to
go high whole season.
Go and see them now because theticket prices are going to go
high through the playoffs andthrough the SEC playoffs and
then the regionals and all thatstuff.
Yeah, regionals and then goingto Omaha.
(57:36):
So go see them right now whilethey're cheap.
But now this is going to be areally fun season.
