That was the last memory ofTexas football last year,
finishing in the semifinalsagain in the CFP, the expanded
college football playoff.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
I'm trying to figure out why you showed me that.

(02:43):
semifinal game.
Both teams lost a lot.
Ohio State two new coordinators, a new young quarterback, texas
Both teams lost a lot to theNFL.
Texas also has a brand-newquarterback, but he has some

(03:03):
experience.
Defense is going to be Texasstrength.
Ohio State I don't know, butthey've got some great, great
talent coming back.
I love this instead of openingup with somebody like East
Popcorn State.

Speaker 1 (03:22):

I'm looking forward to it.
The buzz in the city is goingcrazy.

I'm fired up.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
Man, it's fired up.
Stevie has a lot of storiesfrom his time as a Texas
Longhorn playing for the great, legendary Mack Brown, and those
glory years in Texas andOklahoma were pretty much top
five every year.
Great years and great memories.

(04:20):
YouTube for free, have younoticed, when Monday rolled
around this week, thateverybody's been in a great mood
, not because of, hey, it's theend of summer somewhat, because
that's what Labor Day weekendsignifies the end of summer but

(04:41):
have you noticed there's therudeness of people, or just
people, just in a good moodperiod because of what's about
to happen this weekend?

Speaker 1 (04:49):
I feel a buzz around town man.
It's a good mood, good, goodvibrant mood around town right
now.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
So I feel it.
Hey, let's get to it, man.
This is our first episode ofthe football season.
The last time we saw you guyswas a couple of weeks ago in
Kicking Things Off three-hourlive episode.
You can check that out onYouTube and our Facebook page.
Great turnout at the Boulevard,bro.

(05:17):
That was a lot of fun.
Twenty-one guests.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
Yep, that's a lot of fun.
It was a lot of fun.
It was long, though.
It was a lot of fun.
It was a lot of fun.
It was long though.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
It was a lot of fun Long.
We worked hard for that.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
You worked hard.
I was just there.
You worked really hard.

Speaker 3 (05:33):
Much love.
Brother.
Are you ready to roll onepisode 374?
Let's roll, let's ride.
Baby Got a lot of time.

(05:55):
Closing zone Cut TouchdownTexas.
Got a lot of time.
Closing zone Caught TouchdownTexas.
What a great play for the Horns.
Smith, there's the safety.
There's the safety.

(06:16):
With 19 seconds to go, aaronHarris takes Troy Smith down in
the end zone.
That was the last time Texaspaid a visit to the shoe in
Columbus, ohio.
That great 2005 season happenedto be the season following your
final year of eligibility.
That was a tremendous game.

(06:39):
A lot of NFL talent on thatfield between both Ohio State
and Texas, and two great plays.
Well, there were several greatplays, but defining plays Vince
to Limus Swede, and we were.
You know he's.
We're trying to get a hold ofLimus.
I'm sure everyone else is aswell.
And then, of course, aaronHarris great human being, the

(07:01):
linebacker on that delayed blitzgot Troy Smith in the end zone,
which sealed it up for theHorns in that game.
What do you remember most andwhere were you for that game?

Speaker 1 (07:12):
Well, I had just finished playing college
football the year prior and Istarted my career in real estate
and I've been doing it eversince.
But I remember sitting at homeI had an apartment back then and
I remember sitting at home Iwanted to go to that game but,
as you know, back then when youleft college, you left college
broke.
So I was working in real estatedoing my thing and we sat down

(07:40):
my fiancee at the time, Ibelieve now is my wife we sat on
the couch and watched that game.
I remember when they sealed it,we jumping up and down, having
a good time, and then we wentout, you know.
So that was fun, man, it wasfun to watch, fun to be a part
of.
And I still felt part of thatthat team, because I had just

(08:01):
finished playing months prior.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
Oh, you were, you're, you're, you're connected to all
of them for life.
And you are right, I mean youstill.
You see a lot of these guysyeah.

Speaker 1 (08:13):
Those guys in that clip were my teammates, you know
.

Speaker 3 (08:17):
Yeah, you shared a special bond for life with them
and it was a great year.
And I remember Vince Youngsaying with AJ Hawk and who were
those two linebackers, aj Hawkand Carpenter, bobby Carpenter,
right Vince was saying whilethey had him on the ground that
Vince said man, y'all come outhitting tonight.
And they were very similarteams, very similar teams.

(08:42):
You know right now if yousuffered a loss in that type of
game it's not going to hurt youtoo bad, but back then you know
you're eliminated for the mostpart for playing in the BCS
National Championship.
If you're not aware, I'm SeanClinch, the host of Stories
Inside the man Cave, co-host ofthe Pass Rush with Stevie Lee.

(09:03):
That's Stevie Lee on the right.
We want to give a big shout-outto all of our sponsors, but for
this one, especially HargroveRoofing.
They are big fans of Texaslonghorn sports by being from
Louisiana and they have builttheir business and have a
significant presence in thegreat state of Texas and they're
excited for this game.

(09:24):
We've talked to them and it'samazing.
But you know the face, theunofficial face and voice for
marketing of Hargrove Roofing isthe big guy to my right.
Hargrove Roofing.
Complete the sentence.

Speaker 1 (09:38):
Hargrove Roofing know who's on your roof.

Speaker 3 (09:42):
He does it so well.
He does it so well, stevie.
Your acting is phenomenal.
And speaking of sponsors, wehave recently onboarded our
sixth sponsor.
Shout out to Dave Ramirez andNorthwest Hills Liquor.

(10:05):
Dave Ramirez, great guy, intelligent, really good
business guy, but veryknowledgeable of his bourbons
and wines.
If you recognize the name well,he used to be the GM of Cover 3
.
Shout out to Doug and KatieYoung and the Cover 3 family.
They are big stories inside theman Cave supporters as well.

(10:27):
When we start out for this gameTexas number one in the country
and Ohio State number two in onepoll and you think about
quarterbacks.
But we begin with the one thatwe've been waiting for and you
have to give respect to QuinnEwers for helping Texas get to

(10:47):
where they are now as thequarterback.
But the Manning era at QB1begins.
It seems like it's an eternity.
Arch was asked this week, stevie, about Texas having the
target on their backs.
Yeah, because they are numberone.
That's a lot of pressures withyou replacing as many people as

(11:08):
Texas is, especially four ofyour five offensive line
starters.
But Arch, this says a lot aboutwhere his mind is.

Speaker 5 (11:19):
I mean, I think that's always at Texas and I
think we kind of try to shiftthe narrative.
We're going for everyone else.
Target's not on our back, we,we have a red dot on everyone
else.

Speaker 3 (11:29):
Red dot reference to a video game, but we know what
he's talking about.
When you're, when you're young, quarterback talks like that.
What does that say about what?
You translate it from anotherplayer's point of view.

Speaker 1 (11:44):
I got fired up when I heard him say that.
Man, I did too.
I'm fired up right now.
You know it reminded me of JohnWick, the movie Right, john
Wick.
Somebody just went out andkilled his dog and he's got
blood on him Like he's ready togo, the blood in his eyes, like

(12:04):
that's the mindset I want myquarterback to have.
I want the rest of the team tofall in line, because if we got
a target on our bat, that meanswe're running away.
We are going to go on theattack.
Everybody needs to watch outfor us.
I mean, I love it.

(12:25):
I love that mindset.
I love that he said it in themedia.
I love that.
You know it's out there now andnow.
He has to back it up and Ithink he can.
I really do, I really think hecan back it up.
I'm fired up when I heard himsay it.

Speaker 3 (12:43):
He's been raised well through good pedigree, good
genetics, knows how to be humble, knows how to be a leader.
He is taught.
You know, even his grandfather, the great Archie Manning, told
him slide and get out, get downand get out of bounds to
preserve your health.
But if you think about it,texas back-to-back years will be

(13:06):
opening.
Well, facing the defendingnational champion last year,
went to michigan at the bighouse, silenced them really fast
.
They were the defendingnational champions, ohio state
defending national champions atthe shoe.
Speaking of Ryan Day, they lostto Michigan again last year but

(13:29):
they rallied together and wonthe national title and Ryan Day
was criticized heavily by hisfan base and all they did was
pull it together, win thenational title.
He was asked about, you know, sark, as scripted plays, the
number is, I'm assuming,different.
But he was asked about thatscript, how to defend Arch

(13:50):
Manning and that Texas offenseon the script, and this is what
Day had to say.

Speaker 5 (13:54):
Steve's a great play caller, always has been, and I'm
sure he has his method fordoing that.
Usually, most guys who arescripting games are trying to
get the quarterback into arhythm, so I'm sure they're
going to want to do that withArch, and then he's probably
trying to identify what he's gotout there.

Speaker 3 (14:13):
So I like Ryan Day as a coach, regardless of what
Buckeye fans have said in thepast.
But they're a hard.
That's a championship-levelblue-collar, blue-blood excuse
me fan base that is pouring outwith passion for Buckeye
football and that's why it's apressure-packed job, just like
it is at Texas.

(14:33):
Your thoughts on what he saidabout the Sark script and how
he's trying to get some momentumfor Arch early on.

Speaker 1 (14:44):
Yeah, I don't think that that was a secret.
Everybody knew that.
That's exactly why you do ascript and also you get to study
and the good thing about theoffense is you can have your own
script and do what you want todo and then the defense has to
react to whatever your script is.
So he's not wrong whatever hecan say, whatever you want to
say, but he's not wrong.

(15:04):
Whatever he can say, whateveryou want to say, he's not wrong.
That's exactly right.
I'm trying to figure out whatkind of hair dye or beard dye
endorsement he has.
Maybe I need it, maybe I don't.

Speaker 3 (15:22):
You're rocking the gray bro.

Speaker 1 (15:24):
I'm rocking the gray all the way through.

Speaker 3 (15:25):
You're doing a good job of it.
The thing with Arch you knowhe's got new receivers, a new
tight end, and you know you talkabout the four new offensive
line starters.
You know you've got a new oneover at center.
Now that's a key position, Ithink, on the field that nobody
talks about.
There's going to be growingpains and I think being on the

(15:50):
script will only help, but Ithink people need to if they're
expecting Arch and this offenseto come out on all cylinders
where they're smooth.
I think you need to tone itdown a little bit.
Let this defense get in there.
Arch will have some big-timeplays, but what do you do?

(16:12):
Do you go get Arch theconfidence on that first drive,
first play?
What do you do?
Are you going deep?
What are you doing?
Because he loves to chunk thatdeep ball.
It's humming.

Speaker 1 (16:25):
What are you doing?
Because he loves to chunk thatdeep ball.
It's humming.
Yeah, I think that goodfundamental football being part
of the script in the first fewplays.
It's not the end of the worldif you go three and out.
Every offense has to find theirrhythm.

(16:45):
Likely, ohio State will gothree and out with the defense
we're playing with.
But I think that he needs to bepatient, really follow the
script.
Don't go for the touchdownevery single play, but keep an
eye out for it.
You keep hitting underneath.

(17:05):
They're going to give yousomething long.
He has an incredible arm thatcan get it out there.
He was always my favorite withthe deep ball, better than yours
with the deep ball.

Speaker 3 (17:17):
That was well documented by Stevie.

Speaker 1 (17:19):
Well documented.
The kids are gunslingers.
If you're making the defenselook out what's over the top,
then there's some underneathstuff that's open.
I think the playbook is wideopen for him, but in the

(17:40):
beginning of the game follow thescript and get your rhythm,
just like Dave said.

Speaker 3 (17:47):
This is going to be a chess match of a game.
Last year at Michigan, texaswent for the jugular early and
it worked.
Who's to say that won't happen?
But just be patient with thisoffense, because it's natural
with the number of people.
But having said that, they haverecruited and developed enough,

(18:10):
in my opinion, that of courseyou're going to have some
growing pains, but these guysare prepared.
Look what Goosby did last yearwhen Banks went down to an
injury.
Who's going to be ahigh-performing pro now, goosby?
There was no drop-off at all atall.

Speaker 1 (18:30):
Yeah, and people don't think about that.
Like he, banks was probablyBanks in my opinion before he
got hurt was the best offensivelineman in the country hands
down.
Yeah, my opinion before he gothurt was the best offensive
lineman in the country handsdown.
But then another guy comes infor him and there was no

(18:52):
drop-off.
People think that we have aninexperienced.
We got a very experiencedoffensive line.
A lot of them played, maybe notstarted or maybe they're
playing a new position, but theystill got playing time.
So they got the feel of bigtime college football and it
will translate well onto thefield because they have that

(19:15):
experience.
It's just it's.
It just is what it is like.
You can talk about how is he'snew and he's new, but they're
really not.
They played and they got theexperience.

Speaker 3 (19:27):
No, that's a good point.
And they cross-train thoselinemen at all those positions.
All those positions, just likePete Kwiatkowski does with the
DBs, yep, safety corner, safetycorner and that's defensive
staff.
So we've all heard it since dayone the red zone offense woes

(19:48):
or miscues.
Since Steve Sarkeesian, I mean,he can get the ball.
His offenses are spectacular,very productive.
That's well documented.
But since his arrival in 2021,they get in the red zone and
have not succeeded very well.

(20:09):
However, the percentage, if youwere to draw a map of a
trajectory map, that percentagehas done this and I thought it
was funny and telling.
Now listen to sark and watchhis body language To do this

(20:30):
during a season opener against ahigh-profile opponent.
I want to know your thoughts onhis delivery and his kind of
body language and his laid-backapproach.
You guys want a really coolstat.

Speaker 4 (20:43):
You guys want a really cool stat.
So two years ago okay, twoyears ago we were just over 50%
touchdowns in the red area.
Last year we were 64%touchdowns in the red area.
So we did make someimprovements.

Speaker 5 (21:00):
We just need to continue to improve.

Speaker 3 (21:04):
So I'm reading that's not some earth-shattering deal,
but that drastic improvement tothe mid-60 percentile.
For those watching andwondering, what does that mean?
It's not settling.
So almost two-thirds of thetime when you get in the
opponent's goal line to the20-yard line, the red zone, you

(21:26):
are scoring a touchdowntwo-thirds of the time opposed
to a field goal or nothing atall.

Speaker 1 (21:32):
He calls it the red area.

Speaker 3 (21:34):
Red area.

Speaker 1 (21:35):
He calls it the red area.

Speaker 3 (21:37):
I think everyone has their own red area and you will
on hot days at DKR.

Speaker 1 (21:45):
No question so, but that was something that we
needed to work on In my head.
Once you hit the red zone orred area, you got to score.
You got to score If it's afield goal.
It's a field goal If not put itin the end zone.
But you got to put points onthe board in the red area.

Speaker 3 (22:08):
Let's see if it goes up.
If that percentage goes up thisyear, that should be very
telling, yeah, unstoppable.
I think Sark knows something wedon't.
Yeah For him to be as cool, because the players feed off the
head coach.

Speaker 2 (22:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (22:25):
Let's go back to Matt Brown in 05.
He knew, he knew with you guysin 04, your last year.
He knew, but especially in 05.

Speaker 1 (22:36):
He knew something was special about that team.
He knew that he had Vincecoming back.
It was something special thatwas going to happen when we got
off the field against Michigan.
Yeah, they knew, they hadsomething and Vince was fired up
in the wind and ready to comeback next year.
That next year for the nationalchampionship.
He proclaimed it right thenyeah, against Michigan, and then

(23:00):
came back.
So I feel like Coach Sark knowssomething and sees something.
He's been around championshipteams when he was at Alabama, a
lot of championship teams andUSC as well.
So I always said, you know, giving credit to Nick Saban, I

(23:21):
always said that Nick Saban wasthe big daddy of college
football, but there's alwaysgoing to be a next man up who's
going to replace him.
And before we hired Sark, Isaid Sark might be the next man
up.
And so, yeah, eventually, andso this might be it he may be

(23:43):
solidifying himself as the nextroyalty of college football.
And we got him here at theUniversity of Texas.

Speaker 3 (23:51):
First, he's got to beat Georgia.
They've got to figure that out.

Speaker 2 (23:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (23:55):
They've got to win the SEC and win national
championships.

Speaker 1 (23:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (24:00):
There's a lot to overcome, but they're perched up
on a position that this programhasn't been in a long time.

Speaker 1 (24:08):
You also got to look, though it's a different college
football landscape than backthen.
We've been in the semifinalstwo years straight.
That's what got him a raisejust being there.
The way college footballlandscape is right now is

(24:31):
getting to the dance and thenmaking it deep into the dance,
so he's been doing a phenomenaljob.

Speaker 3 (24:37):
I bet he's done enough to earn as many Boulevard
Burgers at the Bully that hewants, with those delicious
tater tots and frothy beverages.
Yeah, he can get.

Speaker 1 (24:51):
Coach Sark can get stranded at Ikea in Round Rock
and still make it home in 30minutes.
Somebody will pick him up,somebody he's royalty around
here, man.

Speaker 3 (25:01):
He is hey, you're a defensive guy, so you've been to
practice and we all know what'scoming back on this defense.
We know what's not coming backbut, just like the recruiting
we're talking about, what do yousee that may lead Sark and Pete

(25:24):
Kwiatkowski, the defensivecoordinator, and Dwayne Aquino
back for his first year, back asthe DB coach, DBU, the
godfather?
What do you think they'reseeing, from what you've seen,
to give you so muchchampionship-level expectations?

Speaker 1 (25:46):
Man, I'm going to be honest with you and I'm a little
bit biased.
It's the D-line for me.

Speaker 3 (25:53):
And they lost some guys.

Speaker 1 (25:54):
They lost some guys but replaced some guys.
I was talking, man.
We got six guys that could havestarted that defensive tackle
and the hardest part of thehardest job of the defense was
trying to figure out who wasgoing to round out there.
First.
You only put two defensivetackles out there, some packages
three, but the starters you hadto choose the starters and that

(26:17):
was hard because all six ofthem can start at that position.
So what I'm looking forward tois it's going to be like a
hockey change and keeping theseguys very, very fresh throughout
the game.

Speaker 3 (26:33):
That's the.
Is there any defensive linemanin particular that stands out
that that that is new to being astarter?
That stands out to you fromyour critique because you played
the position right, no, they'reall pretty good man, uh.

Speaker 1 (26:52):
But if we're going out to the linebacker and
defensive man, I really likecolin simmons, right, like I
really really like to watch himplay.
I keep an eye on him wheneverwe're at practice.
Um, just coming off the edgebut, um, golly, who's the kid?
I forgot his name.
They're all just really good.

Speaker 3 (27:13):
I want to see January .
Yes.

Speaker 1 (27:16):
January.

Speaker 3 (27:16):
He's a legacy.
His dad played at Texas in the80s.

Speaker 1 (27:20):
Yeah, january did stand out.
What number is he Number?
Is it 95?
No, anyway, january was reallygood for me in practice, but,
like I said, they're all good.
There was no drop off and theywere going against the ones, the
ones on offense, so it waspretty fun to watch.

Speaker 3 (27:43):
So you mentioned Colin Simmons and the Buckeyes
finally named their quarterback,julian Sane.
He was announced on Instagram, they put a picture up on their
Instagram and then they had apress conference in which he

(28:03):
said, obviously, what allcoaches do when you have a
quarterback or position battleJulian Sand, a highly recruited
kid out of California.
Everybody in the country wantedhim.
But Colin Simmons, who is apreseason all-American type
defensive end and what I'm toldI got to mention this he's been

(28:25):
coached where his get-off speedis unbelievable.
He's been coached now to get inthe three-point stance.
He was usually a two-pointstance guy where he's standing
up, so he's saying that he isfaster off of a three-point
stance as a defensive end passrusher.

(28:45):
So Colin Simmons saw that.
When Julian Sane was announcedas the starting quarterback for
Ohio State, colin Simmons put itin his Instagram story and he
was asked about is theresomething behind all that?
And in the how can I say thisProphetic, intellectual type of

(29:07):
way, colin Simmons with his ownabsolutely humorous, dry humor
answered the question in a wayonly Colin Simmons could answer.

Speaker 6 (29:20):
Honestly, I'm just excited that they chose a
quarterback.
There's really nothing majorbehind it.
I'll say there's no target forhim or nothing like that.

Speaker 1 (29:34):
I'm just glad that they have a quarterback that I'm
ready to sack.
Hey man, if you talk like thatin front of the cameras, you got
to do it on the field man, sohe has to go out there and
actually do it.
He said it.

Speaker 3 (29:50):
It's in the atmosphere and let's go get it.
You see he's growing up, he'sfilling out.

Speaker 1 (29:56):
Yeah yeah, he had his neck in that interview.

Speaker 3 (30:00):
That guy between him and Anthony Hill A-Hill, not
A-Hole, but Anthony Hill.
A-hill, not A-Hole, but AnthonyHill.

Speaker 1 (30:08):
Exactly.

Speaker 3 (30:09):
But that's a quarterback nightmare to have
those two guys on the edge.

Speaker 1 (30:13):
Yep, absolutely it is .
And then those two big guyscoming right in front of you too
.
So that's what I'm saying.
This D-line is bro, it's goingto be fun to watch this Saturday
.
I can't wait.

Speaker 3 (30:28):
Well, they got to stop the run.
That's first and foremost.
Stevie Lee.
You've been a part of what fiveseason openers at Texas.

Speaker 1 (30:47):
Yes, I was.

Speaker 3 (30:48):
Season openers.
You never opened on the road.

Speaker 1 (30:51):
I don't think I did.
I could be wrong, but I don'tthink I did.

Speaker 3 (30:55):
I don't remember yeah .

Speaker 1 (30:57):
I think we were supposed to play Hawaii my
freshman year.
That game got canceled.

Speaker 3 (31:04):
That's unfortunate.
Yeah, the 95 team opened up atHawaii.

Speaker 2 (31:09):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (31:10):
And that's when we first saw Ricky Williams at
fullback and the great SeanMitchell from LBJ ran all up and
down the field.
There you go.
Stevie Lee man cave story.
Do you have one that inparticular from a specific
season opener you have?

Speaker 1 (31:26):
one that in particular from a specific
season opener?
Absolutely I do.
It was way back in 2000,.
September 2000 or end of August2000,.
One of those, my first game, first college football game ever
.
I get in the game Sean Rodgersno, it's not Sean Rogers.

(31:47):
Casey Hampton comes out and Iwas his backup as soon as he was
ready to come out.
I was trotting on when we wereplaying Louisiana Lafayette.

Speaker 3 (31:54):
Raging Cajuns.

Speaker 1 (31:56):
Raging Cajuns and I get down in my stance and I'm
ready to go.
I'm fired up.
I'm playing big-time collegefootball.
I'm in Texas.
I got Texas across my chest.
Quarterback gets on the center.
I'm right there in the onetechnique, just shaded to the

(32:17):
left side of the center, my eyesare glued on the ball
Quarterback.

Speaker 3 (32:25):
As you are coached to do.

Speaker 1 (32:27):
As you're coached to do, as your coach to do
quarterback down, say hard count, trying to draw me off sides.
You know what he did.
He drew me off sides and all ofa sudden I heard the whistle

(32:50):
and I looked to my side.
There's a flag flying offsideTexas, number 65.
And I just I just that's myvery first play was a penalty in
college, college football.
And uh, later on I get the storymark pittman is in the stands,

(33:12):
uh, and my dad and my mom is inthe stands and mark is uh,
sitting a couple people downfrom my dad and I jump off sides
and Mark Pittman jokinglyyelled very loud oh man, whose

(33:35):
kid is that?
To my dad.
And my dad just dropped hishead and shook his head and he
was like that's mine, he's mine.
We marched it up, it's all mine.
Yeah, marched it up five yardsand then I was determined to get
that five yards back.
So I don't know if I had atackle for loss then, but we
played the game.
But that was my introductory toa season opener against

(34:00):
Louisiana Lafayette.
My career opener, my collegecareer opener, was an all-sides
play.

Speaker 3 (34:07):
Hey, it happens.

Speaker 1 (34:10):
Does it, does it happen?

Speaker 3 (34:11):
It happens he knew you were in.
He did the hard count for areason.

Speaker 1 (34:15):
Yeah, we got freshmen in here for hard count, hard
count freshmen, freshmen,freshmen, freshmen, freshmen.

Speaker 2 (34:22):
Yep.

Speaker 3 (34:24):
Brother, that's funny , that's a great man cave story.
Hey, listen, man, we're goingto take a quick break and we're
going to hear more about.
Hargrove.
Roofing and on the other sideof this break we're going to
talk about a couple of localguys, local phenomenal, local
products who are maybe the bestin their class and position in

(34:49):
the country.
Now, at both TCU and Baylor, season opening week.
Man, it continues.
We'll see you anotherSaturday's break.

Speaker 4 (34:59):
Here at Hardcore Roofing we try to think outside
the box to kind of get thecreative juices flowing.
So I brought in my friendStevie Lee, former defensive
tackle for the Texas Longhorns.
He's going to help the teamstrategize, really motivate them
.
Light a fire.

Speaker 1 (35:12):
This guy's going to block down.
This guy's going to block down.
You put your butt into theguard and that way my Mike
linebacker gets free to do what.

Speaker 4 (35:22):
Not only are they going to learn a thing or two,
but they're going to also leavewith a great attitude and a
bunch of smiles on their faces.

Speaker 2 (35:30):
I'm sorry.
What does this have to do withroofing exactly?
Get out Right now.

Speaker 1 (35:37):
I said get out.

Speaker 4 (35:40):
For me, that's what it's all about.
It's just having fun, makingour employees have a great time
Hargrove Roofing know who's onyour roof, but it's a really,

(36:04):
really good group.
Ed Small is just incrediblyconsistent and every time you
throw him the ball he makes aplay.

Speaker 3 (36:12):
Ed Small stories inside the man Cave VIP alumni,
along with his father, clintSmall, the great former Anderson
Trojan receiver, returner, db,everything.
One of the best.
I'm not just saying it becauseI went to Anderson High School
and played for that program thatI have a lot of pride in, but

(36:34):
he's one of the best to play inAISD history and he was going to
play baseball at Texas.
He wanted a place where hecould potentially play.
Both TCU said come on, he'sgoing to play.
I don't know how much, I don'tknow if he'll start, but he's

(36:55):
going to play a lot for theHorned Frogs and Sonny Dyches.
Did you from what you know?
I mean, I knew he was going tomake an impact somehow, but this
early, did you see Ed making Edto make this much of an impact
already?
Because when your coach ismentioning you in preseason

(37:17):
interviews, you've caught hiseye.
You've done something to earnthat.

Speaker 1 (37:22):
No, when we interviewed him on Stories
Inside the man Cave, I justthought that he was a really
good kid, great kid, greatfamily and head on straight.
So if you put any, I felt likeif you put anything in front of
him, he was going to conquer itRight.
His dad and his mom arephenomenal.
They said that his mom is thebest athlete in the house.

Speaker 2 (37:44):
Oh, hands down.

Speaker 1 (37:46):
His dad played football at Vandy, and so if the
mom is the best athlete in thehouse, then he has a really good
for lack of better wordspedigree, and so anything you
put in front of an athlete likethat, that's a good kid that has
a good head on his shoulder.
He's going to tackle it andconquer it.
So it's no surprise that hiscoach is mentioning him already

(38:11):
as a true freshman, correct, Yep.

Speaker 3 (38:13):
True freshman.

Speaker 1 (38:14):
He reported early this spring January report yeah,
yeah, so, as a true freshman, coming in and making an impact
on a team like TCU, and he'sgoing to play baseball, or
potentially play baseball right.
Yeah, that kid has the world infront of him and he's tackling

(38:36):
everything that they throw athim, so hats off to him.
I hope he has a phenomenal year.
I hope he does break all kindsof records and do whatever he
wants to do at TCU, but playingboth baseball and football.

Speaker 3 (38:50):
Good kid, Good kid.
So his mom was a great athlete.
His older sister, AnnieDivision I lacrosse player in
the Ivy League.
So it's a great athletic family, even better human beings, and
Clint, product of he's loyalforever Austin Maroon.

(39:11):
And then Clint's dad, football, from Texas, you know.
So it's just a former collegefootball player himself and also
a great contributor to the cityof Austin and AISD period.
So, josh Cameron, you and Iinterviewed he and his mom.

(39:32):
Great story, Great family, great story right there.
Because he was a great receiverat Cedar Park High School,
walked on to Baylor and was puton scholarship eventually.
Earned his scholarship, yep Oneof the top 250 players,
preseason in the country of allof college football and

(39:56):
preseason Bolitnikoff Awardwatch list.
I'm not a big fan of those, butif national media whatnot are
saying that, that means that'slegit and you and I had an
opportunity.
This is a clip from theirinterview when we were talking
about Baylor coming off of a.

(40:19):
They had a really down seasonthe year before started the
season, so just a horrible startlast year and rallied off all
these wins, got into a bowl, hada great performance, and we
asked him about that.
Josh Cameron, on what to expectfrom Baylor.
You know TCU and Baylor couldbe there in the end for the Big

(40:42):
12 championship.

Speaker 2 (40:43):
Just trying to get those guys plugged in and
connected and just kind ofseeing how they just move
forward and just climb.
That's what spring went on.
I think we're in a great, greatspot.
For sure.
I'm just super excited forAugust 30th, august 29th, I
can't remember which day, but toplay Auburn.

Speaker 3 (41:04):
Back out.

Speaker 2 (41:05):
Prime time.
I'm super excited for thatmomentum, so definitely want to
shoot way, way higher than whatlast year was, but last year was
definitely a good start forsure.

Speaker 3 (41:17):
Look at that.
So Baylor opens up.
Thursday night against AuburnAuburn, sec, auburn.

Speaker 1 (41:28):
Yeah, that's going to be fun for them as well.
Shout out to us we got somepretty good players to come on
Stories Inside the man Cave.
I mean, I'm sorry, sean, yougot some really good players.
You helped Come on StoriesInside the man Cave, like we got
some.
That's some talent with JoshCameron and Ed Small, so

(41:56):
hopefully we can get them onlater to talk about their
careers Small with his firstyear in the college football and
then Cameron with his last yearin college football.
That'll be fun.

Speaker 3 (42:09):
Well, it's going to be a lot of fun, stephen.
We've had a lot of fun withgreat people just good human
beings, good families and greatstories.
And if you want to go back onour Facebook page or YouTube
page, look up the Cameron story.
His lovely mother has overcomea lot health-wise and to be
where she is and she has thebest spirit.

(42:31):
And then Ed and his dad, clint, was on with this, I think after
their junior year at Anderson.
It was a great episode as well.
We learned more about it.
So college football week onefirst full week upset.
Potential TCU travels to ChapelHill to play ACC North Carolina

(42:54):
.
Mack Brown's former programBill.

Speaker 1 (42:57):
Belichick.

Speaker 3 (42:58):
Bill Belichick's debut.
If TCU wins, is that an upset?

Speaker 1 (43:04):
No, I expect TCU to win.

Speaker 3 (43:06):
I do too.

Speaker 1 (43:11):
I put it on there because, depending on who you
talk to, yeah, I don't seebelichick being a good college
coach.

Speaker 3 (43:17):
I don't see it well, they got quite an organization.
You know, they got the gms, theuh scouts, all this, everything
, everything nowadays.
So I'm with you, man.
I think TCU probably may rollin this one.
How about the fighting JoshCamerons and Baylor Bears
Thursday night game almost saidFloyd Casey Stadium that has

(43:38):
been torn down years ago.
I don't know why I still haveFloyd Casey in mind, but Waco
Thursday night primetime, auburnat Baylor.

Speaker 1 (43:50):
That's a tough one for me, man.

Speaker 3 (43:52):
I think it'll be a great game.

Speaker 1 (43:53):
I think it'll be a great game.
When is that one?
Is that Saturday or Thursday?

Speaker 3 (43:57):
I just said, Thursday tomorrow night.

Speaker 1 (43:59):
Yeah, golly, golly.
I don't know man, I think I gotBaylor.

Speaker 3 (44:05):
I'm taking.
Baylor.
Is that an upset if Baylor wins?

Speaker 1 (44:09):
No, these teams are pretty evenly matched, I think.
I think it can go either way.
I don't know if it's an upset.
No, I think Baylor should winthat game.

Speaker 3 (44:20):
I think Baylor, regardless of who's favored.
I think people are going tothink well, the SEC and Auburn
and Hugh Freeze should win thisgame.
I'm going to go ahead and sayit because when everyone says a
season SEC versus a Big 12, theythink they're going to take the
SEC.
I'm going to say Baylor at home.

(44:40):
If you want to call it an upset, that's up to you, but I'm
taking Baylor in this one Dude.
No disrespect to our guy, ourbrother Jay Boulware, who's also
a two-time VIP alumni.
He's an assistant at Kentucky, vip alumni of this podcast.
I think Toledo pulls off theupset.

Speaker 1 (45:04):
Okay, I may be wrong yeah.
Northwestern.
Sorry, Boulware Sorryern.

Speaker 3 (45:10):
Sorry, jb, we love you man.
You guys are more than likelyTo be bowl eligible, maybe more
Because the SEC is, I think, deeper this year than it was
last year.
Northwestern At Tulane I'mtaking an upset there, tulane
what school is that?
Northwestern At Tulane I'mtaking an upset there at Tulane.
What school is that?

Speaker 1 (45:32):
Northwestern and Tulane.
Who are you taking?
I'm taking Tulane in the upset, sean, I'm from Louisiana and
I'm going to tell you that it'snot Tulane, tulane, tulane.
Tulane yep, I've been corrected.
A lot Tulane, tulane, tulane.
Yep, I've been corrected a lot.
I know it's Tulane man, yeah,so I got Tulane as well.

Speaker 3 (45:55):
Oh, shoot you up.
All right.
Carlton State they haveinvested a lot since they moved
up to Division I.
They're FCS currently.
Their facility's off the charts.
Yep, they just opened their newarena, unbelievable Football
stadium, impressive Everything.

(46:18):
They're part of the Texas A&Msystem.
Did they not play last week?
They did.
They did, yeah, they're goingto play West Point, portland,
right?
Yep, portland State.

Speaker 1 (46:26):
Yep, tarleton did, yeah, they're going to play West
Point Portland right Yep.

Speaker 3 (46:29):
Portland State Yep.

Speaker 1 (46:31):
Tarleton.

Speaker 3 (46:31):
State Texas.

Speaker 1 (46:33):
Did they win yeah?

Speaker 3 (46:35):
Blew them out.

Speaker 2 (46:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (46:37):
Army had a great year last year.
I'm taking Tarleton in theupset, not because I'm pulling
all Texas here.

Speaker 1 (46:46):
Yeah, so you're taking Tarleton.
Yeah, I'll take it too.
Man, I'll take it too.
I like it they already got agame under their belt, they got
the rhythm going.

Speaker 3 (46:55):
Yeah, they do.
Army will be tough FCS over FBS.
And lastly, remove the blinders.
Remove anything in mybackground that states SFA.
Sfa, in my opinion, has thebest quarterback, Sam Vidlak, in
the FCS division, and they havea guy named Bobino who plays

(47:18):
your position, who's a disruptorColby Cartho, the head coach,
VIP alumni of Stories Inside theman Cave University of Houston.
They're loaded.
They have good talent in theBig 12.
Thursday night game, I'm takingthe Lumberjacks to shock the

(47:42):
world.

Speaker 1 (47:44):
You're a little biased, aren't you?

Speaker 3 (47:46):
No, I just feel it Catch them on guard Thursday
night.

Speaker 1 (47:53):
Weird things happen, nah, man, I got to stick with U
of H on this one.

Speaker 3 (47:58):
Hey, I don't blame you.

Speaker 1 (47:59):
To top it all off this massive week one, look at
these matchups Stevie Week oneon Saturday the Longhorns and
the Buckeyes, the Road Tideagainst the Seminoles, the
Tigers against the Tigers, theIrish against the.
What is it?
Dolphins, not Dolphins.

(48:20):
Miami, what Hurricane.

Speaker 3 (48:22):
The.

Speaker 1 (48:23):
U, the U, and are we doing predictions on this?

Speaker 3 (48:29):
No, we don't have to.
I mean, I'll go ahead and tellyou right now.
I think Texas escapes Columbus.
I don't know what the scorewill be.
I think Florida State is goingto be a lot better than last
year.
That did not work out all thosetransfers for them together.
I think Florida State will giveBama a run.

Speaker 1 (48:49):
I don't think so.
I think Bama will roll them.

Speaker 3 (48:51):
Okay, and.

Speaker 1 (48:52):
I think Clemson.

Speaker 3 (48:55):
That's a good one and I think Clemson pulls off the
win against LSU and Nesmeyer.

Speaker 1 (49:00):
I disagree.
Lsu.

Speaker 3 (49:02):
You like Nesmeyer Yep , All right.
Notre Dame Miami.
This used to be a really goodrivalry at one point.
I don't think.

Speaker 1 (49:12):
Versus the convicts.

Speaker 3 (49:17):
I don't know, man.
A lot of people are sayingNotre Dame may be a
disappointment this year.

Speaker 1 (49:23):
No, no, no, I got Notre Dame in this one.

Speaker 3 (49:32):
I like to agree with you on that.
I'm taking the irish, takingthe irish over the canes and the
?
U?
Uh.
But you know what we got toremind people before the games
even start, just in case youdon't know who number one is I,
I, I hold that head, I am numberone.

Speaker 6 (49:49):
No matter if you like it or take it, sit down and
write it, I am number one.

Speaker 3 (49:56):
Now let me ask you, man, what does it take to?
I, like it, can't wait to be aDKR again, and we will.
September 6th, san Jose State, and regardless of what happens
in Ohio State, that game betterbe rocking at 11 am.
But if they win, I'm sure itwill.
Hey, tiktok in the man cave.
Peyton Manning and DevontaeAdams had a conversation Quite

(50:20):
hilarious.

Speaker 1 (50:21):
What is your best pickup line?

Speaker 3 (50:23):
I'd be like hey, baby , are you a beaver?
Because damn.

Speaker 5 (50:28):

personal.
High school football always is apart of our fabric and one of
the best rivalries in the greatstate of Texas happens the first
week between my alma mater andthe McCallum Knights.
I'll tell you something good.

(52:48):
It has a new sponsor.
This year.
Taco Shack had a great run as asponsor but sometimes, as we
all know, all good things cometo an end and our buddy, our
good friend who was on fan ofthe program, eddie Joseph, the
CEO of Legacy Turf and Greens, stepped up and is sponsoring the

(53:10):
now first ever Shoal CreekShowdown.
It used to be the Taco ShackBowl for 22 years and the series
is fairly even.
I think Anderson and my mightyTrojans have a two-game lead.
Since it's been a sponsoredbowl game, we're going to call
it the Legacy Turf Bowl, coachGammerdinger and the McCallum

(53:32):
Knights.
They are well-coached and veryphysical, very prideful.
That's my mom, my late mom andlate dad's alma mater.
But I sure changed my mom towear the blue and gold and she
was a good Trojan mom.
Much love, mama C, mom to wearthe blue and gold and she was a
good trojan mom.

(53:52):
Much love.
Mama see, she'll be watching asa sold out.
The game is sold out already athouse park stadium.
Wow, no tickets or passes.

I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
