Speaker 1 (00:41):
Today is going to be an exciting day at the Hargrove
office as we bring in a localcelebrity.
Welcome the kicking phenom,Bert Auburn.
Conference champion of theTexas Longhorn football team,
all-conference kicker.
He's going to be our newspokesman.
Bert's the best kicker in theconference.
He plays for the TexasLonghorns, as you can see.
You know Bert's f***ing awesome.
Hey, Stevie.

(01:01):
Dude, you're really replacing mewith a kicker?
No, not at all, man.
Hey guys, who wants a picturewith Stevie?
Anyone.
Stevie almost won a Big 12championship.
Hargrove Roofing Know who's onyour roof.

Speaker 4 (01:15):
First got to Texas, me and Coach Mill, we would meet
every day in the afternoon togo through the offense and you
know he would install it for meso I could begin to learn it and
and begin to understand it,kind of see it how he saw it and
um, you know he helped metremendously and um, it was.
It was super cool to get toknow him and his family, um, and

(01:36):
he was a great dude to play for.

Speaker 5 (01:39):
Stevie Lee, I already know what you think.
Uh, 14 longhorns and we'll getinto that.
We're up in Indy and it's stillthere.
Quinn and the quarterbacks hadan opportunity.
I can't tell if the receiversran the wrong routes or Quinn
was off, but it's a mixed bag ofopinions.

(02:00):
What I saw?
I thought he had zip.
He looked healthy.
What did you see?

Speaker 3 (02:07):
uh, probably a little bit of both man.
I saw some some bad throws thatwere some throws that weren't
good for elite quarterback for,uh, you know what he's just done
at the University of Texas, sohopefully he can turn it around
and some GMs actually see whathe can actually do in game
situation.

Speaker 5 (02:27):
Somebody likes him.
And there's Sark was asked onthe NFL network.
He gave a plethora of reasonswhy NFL GMs should like Quinn.

Speaker 6 (02:38):
I think something that gets lost you know this
guy's had to endure a lot in histime with us at the University
of Texas is his resiliency.
This guy always bounced back.
He had to fight through a bunchof different injuries along the
way, played in a bunch ofbig-time games, and so some of
those things are hard to measureright at a combine or at a pro
day.
But I think the totality of whohe is, his resume of who he is

(03:00):
as a quarterback, I think isgoing to be helpful for him.

Speaker 5 (03:05):
So he's not wrong, stevie, I mean you and I at some
point different.
Well, both at the same time.
Early on we both had criticismof his deep ball.
But the guy has been nothealthy for the duration of his
career at Texas the oblique, theshoulder arm, whatnot.
But when you hear Sark, is Sarkrunning the political game or

(03:25):
do you kind of see it more now?
Hey, this guy did.
One of our guests that's atwo-time VIP alumni.
He even said it before westarted this episode.
Quinn took Texas to places ithas not been yet or before.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
Yeah, it is a political aim by Sark, but he's
also in college.
What Jason said was play to hisstrengths, so play to yours and
strengths.
I think his scheme, sark'sscheme, is accredited to putting

(04:04):
us where we were, more than thearm and the talent of Quentin
Ewers.

Speaker 5 (04:09):
His successor, the hype machine Arch Manning, jaday
Barron, an ATX 512 product andhis head coach is going to join
us.
A head coach from high schoolis going to join us, but this is
a pretty cool story I didn'tknow about this.
School is going to join us, butthis is a pretty cool story, I
didn't know about this.
Today, baron gave some insighton the arch manning who, arch,

(04:30):
did not want to be handedanything because of the family
tree that he's from I thinksecond week he was there.

Speaker 7 (04:37):
Um, you know, he as a freshman, yeah, as a freshman
he he's like two lockers downfor me.
He asked to take my loop to thelaundry thing.
I told him like Arch, you'regood, you don't have to do it.
But he just wanted to do it.
He wanted to show me that hewasn't better than anybody, that
he was still part of his teamand that he was a freshman.
And I told him he didn't haveto do that and I told him I
appreciate that.
But Scott's the, he paysattention to Coach Sark and his

(05:06):
game plan and Coach Milliethat's an amazing quarterback
coach.
And then he was behind a greatquarterback, quinn, just taking
encouragement and takingacknowledgement and just
understanding the game andunderstanding Coach Sark's
scheme.

Speaker 5 (05:12):
Man, that's a pretty cool story.
You can tell the guy is, hedoes not want the spotlight on
him, regardless of what hisfamily last name is.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
Yeah, but I'm ready for this spotlight to be on him,
man.
I'm so excited about the futureof the University of Texas
right now.

Speaker 5 (05:29):
It's going to be fun and we've got an action packed.
We've got a couple of guestslined up for you.
In the first segment Kind ofalluded to the second guest, but
we've got a godfather Agodfather of defensive backs
coming back to Texas and a guywho that was his position coach,
who knows him very well, andStevie knows the guy that we're

(05:52):
going to have very well.
He's been on here before andhis son just won a championship
in the Sunshine State.
Before we get going, follow uson all of our social media
platforms.
Hey, and the best thing aboutit on YouTube, if you subscribe,
it's free.
And our sponsor.
This would not be possible allthis beautiful NASCAR signage

(06:13):
that we have on here if itwasn't for the family from
Shreveport now in Central Texas,Hargrove Roofing.
You see the quote, themarketing slogan, but, Stevie,
you are the face of HargroveRoofing, so let's hear the pipes
and how that slogan is said toperfection.

Speaker 3 (06:29):
I don't know if I'm the face of Hargrove Roofing,
but the guys are great.
If you have any roof issues, call my guys over at Hargrove
Roofing.
Hargrove Roofing know who's onyour roof.

Speaker 5 (06:39):
Man you just got your grill was all up in the camera.
I like that man so hey let'sget it, man.
We tease it a little bit withquinn and uh, so arch manning

(07:03):
story.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
Are you ready?
Let's do it.
Let's do it.
Baby 22 on our feet.
The DB's trying to knock my assoff man.
See the respect I get over here.
Golly hey, work together 22 ontheir feet.

(07:26):
Stay away from the quarterback.

Speaker 5 (07:30):
Dwayne Aquino.
I think he's going to becoaching until he's a century
old.
He does not age at all.
We need to know his secret.
He was there while you werethere, but was not your position
coach.
What can you tell us about theduane akina?

Speaker 3 (07:46):
what, uh, man, I wish he was my position coach man,
uh, even though my position'scoach was great mike tollison
was awesome but, um, it was justsomething different about akina
and his players, man, every oneof his players loved him and he
loved on them, had them over athis house Like he.

(08:06):
He loved on him like they wereone of his kids and they could
have been one of his kids, causehe had like five or six of them
when he was here.
So so, coach Akina man, Iabsolutely love him.
I remember talking to him abouthim growing up in Hawaii and
how he barely wore shoes whenthey were on the island.
Why, yeah, it's the culture isthat they don't wear shoes out

(08:30):
there, man.
So that was a wow to me.
He's just a good dude.
He'll sit down and talk toanybody and he has that loud,
hearty laugh.

Speaker 5 (08:40):
Yeah, so a guy that has's been on here before he's a
good friend of yours Came toTexas with you and he was
coached by him when he firstarrived at Texas.
He coached at Arizona twiceDwayne Aquino.
Now he's back at Texas for asecond time.
Let's bring in a guy who wascoached by the Duane Akina,

(09:12):
Phillip Geiger man.
Welcome back.

Speaker 9 (09:16):
We need to put you on the payroll, Duane Akina man,
you're in Orlando, Florida.

Speaker 5 (09:20):
Go ahead and tell us why you're there and show the
bling that you showed all of usbefore this episode began.

Speaker 9 (09:38):
Yeah, so my son's team entered into the Junior
Olympics tournament here inOrlando.
There was 68 teams in their agegroup and you know we started
out slow but we ended up in thesecond bracket.
But we won that second bracketand ended up bringing the little
bling bling home, you know Imean.
So it was fun.

(09:59):
It was a lot of fun.
Lots of great talent out here, boys.
It's some players y'all goingto hear about here in the near
future.
There's some great athletes outhere, man, that's awesome.
That's a great talent out here,boys.
It's some players y'all goingto hear about here in the near
future.
It's some great athletes outhere, man, that's awesome,
that's fun.

Speaker 7 (10:09):
Tell.

Speaker 3 (10:10):
Kyle, uncle Stevie you said congratulations, man.

Speaker 9 (10:13):
I will.
I will, I'll send you his Venmo.
Hey you and Stevie.
I didn't say congratulations.

Speaker 3 (10:22):
I didn't say I was going to pay him for it.
I was going to saycongratulations.

Speaker 5 (10:25):
I didn't say I was going to pay him for it.
Hey, you and Stevie were atTexas early, and Coach Matt
Brown when he started to get itgoing early on, and then Dwayne
Aquino was.
I think he arrived at Texas inwhat 01?
Yeah, my sophomore year.
What was it about him thattransformed you and why are you

(10:46):
so excited about this the returnof Dwayne Aquino?
What do you think Sark saw inhim to say man, we need to bring
this, this godfather of DBU,back to Austin.

Speaker 9 (10:58):
So.
So when I first met Aquino, ofcourse there was a lot of you
know, lots of talk about himcoming in and um, when I first
saw him, completely honest, Iwas like this guy is like the
legendary coach, you know, tall, skinny, um, and.
And then I found out he playedquarterback.

(11:19):
I was kind of 50 50 on that.
I was like he playedquarterback but well, he could
give us some insight on whatquarterbacks look for, you know,
in reading defenses and stuff, and so.
But after that first practice, though, I mean man, the energy,
the energy he brought I was likeI like this dude, I like his

(11:40):
energy, he challenges you, hechallenges you to bring out the
best in yourself.
And that's what I needed as aplayer.
That's what I wanted as aplayer.
I wanted somebody to challengeme.
You know, yell at me, piss meoff, you know, tell me what I
need to correct.
And so after that firstpractice I mean he was, he was

(12:01):
the, he was a superstar in thelocker room, you know Stevie was
coming to ask, like man, he hadsome energy.
Like what was he?
Why was he rolling on theground, you know, diving on the
ground, rolling on the ground, and I was like man that's my
coach right there, Like I'd goto war with him any day and ever
since then I've just been thebiggest fan, and from that point

(12:28):
on.

Speaker 5 (12:28):
I did not want to disappoint Coach Aquino.

Speaker 3 (12:33):
Go ahead, Stevie.
Oh yeah, man.
So yeah, I remember him rollingon the ground, Phillip.
I remember if you're walkingnext to Coach Aquino on the
football field and a ball dropson the ground, he's like fumble
and go and go get it himself,Like we're in the game, we're
not in the game.
That's the energy that he hadon the field, man.
No, he's a good person that Ithink that he really, really

(12:58):
cares about his players.
He cares how he coaches them.
He coaches them hard, but nothard to where you're shutting
them down either, you know, andtearing them down.
What I think that Sark saw inCoach is basically a UT alumni
coming back on staff.
You know what I mean.

(13:18):
He didn't go to school at Texas, but he was back here under
Mack Brown, in the glory days ofMack Brown.
But he was back here under MackBrown and the glory days of
Mack Brown and you know we lostBlake Gideon, who actually
played here, and so I think thatthey wanted somebody on staff.
He wanted someone on staff thathad ties to the old UT.

(13:41):
So I think and knows how torecruit Texas as well.
So I think that that wasstrategic for Coach Sark to go
out there and get Akina, and Ihope Akina asked for whatever he
wanted and I hope they gave itto him.

Speaker 9 (13:57):
Whatever they gave him, he's worth more.

Speaker 3 (14:00):
Yeah, absolutely, absolutely.

Speaker 5 (14:01):
Phillip, we know you're excited and I know you're
excited to have him back and Iknow you kept in touch with him.
You know all the stops you sawon that graph.
He did a great job at StanfordArizona twice.
What is there one story aboutCoach Aquino that sticks in your
head that you love telling?

Speaker 9 (14:25):
that you love telling .
Probably the best one, personally, for me was I went to
his office one time.
I was a little frustrated and Ijust asked him what I needed to
do to get better, to see thefield more, what I need to work

(14:46):
on, and, um, and he told me thisis what you need to work on,
this is what you got to getbetter at, this is what you're
not so good at, um, and he wasjust real honest with me and
that's what I liked.
You know, I didn't want him toblow smoke up my butt and tell
me that I'm that, I'm doing fine, uh, you just keep working,
like.
He gave me specifics on what towork on, what I need to get

(15:06):
better at, and I went out and Idid it and I got better and I
got to see the field more, andthat's something that really
stuck out to me.
And there was another time too, after my junior year, he was
getting offered from UCLA and ofcourse everybody knows he's
from Hawaii and he, you know, missed home and wanted to be

(15:27):
closer to home.
And I'll tell you what man.
I was so nervous that he wasleaving.
I would have hated it if heleft.
And after it came out that hewas staying man, I went to him I
said thank you, thank you, thank you for staying here, you
know, and so, and so those twostories stand out to me, but

(15:48):
yeah, and of course just theintensity, and you know some
stuff I probably can't say onthe podcast, and so just, he's
just an awesome, awesome coachand even a better guy.

Speaker 3 (16:03):
Now Phillip.
So I remember Coach Akina notonly just being a good guy on
the field, just coaching youguys up, but I remember just
about every week or every otherweek y'all would go to his house
right and hang out and he wouldcook for you guys and his wife
apparently is a phenomenal cookand cooking Hawaiian cuisine or

(16:26):
Pacific Island cuisine.

Speaker 9 (16:27):
Wow yeah.
So we went to his house and thefirst time we went he told
every DB to bring their highschool highlight film, and and
we sat through and we watchedeverybody's high school
highlight film and it was funnybecause, you know, I went to a

(16:48):
Christian school and our coachesdid not allow celebrations.
Wow yeah, they didn't like itat all.
And so there was one play I didand I did like a little high
step into the end zone and CoachAquino looked at me.
He was like that's all theyallowed y'all to do over there.

(17:09):
But but, yeah, went to hishouse.
He, he is, he is family and uh,yes, his wife is a great cook.
Um, it's probably why I endedup marrying an islander who can
cook, and so, um, but, yeah, yeah, he would have us over to
his house and, you know, wewould just all just enjoy each

(17:30):
other's time.
It was definitely more thanjust football with Coach Hakeem,
it was relationships.

Speaker 5 (17:34):
Yep, phillip man, we appreciate it.
Man, and give your son a bighigh five, bro hug, for us I
will.
I think everyone who has anyvested interest in Texas
football former players, fansare really excited for your
former coach that he's back.
I guess if you find a way toget us an invite over there to

(18:00):
experience his wife's islandHawaiian cooking, let's do it.
I'll buy the ingredients andwe'll all go over there.

Speaker 9 (18:07):
All right, that's a deal.

Speaker 5 (18:11):
Hey man, safe travels , man.
When we you know we got to dolunch and we got to do this
again, we got to get you on theman cave payroll apparently.

Speaker 9 (18:19):
Yeah, yeah, I'm, I'm down with that.

Speaker 3 (18:22):
All right, man, get back to your family.
Man, y'all get back safely, allright.

Speaker 9 (18:26):
All right, thanks y'all, I appreciate y'all.

Speaker 5 (18:28):
We'll see you.
Pg, Appreciate you All right.
Thank you, man.
He's got all those greatstories, All you guys from
Shreveport.
Man, I didn't know you couldn'tcelebrate.

Speaker 3 (18:42):
Yeah, I mean they couldn't celebrate.
I still did it, man.
I remember one time I got introuble.
We were in the Superdome and wewere playing, I think, west
Monroe Right, and it was thechampionship game, my senior
year.
No, it was the game to kick offthe season.

(19:03):
They had a kickoff classic inthe Superdome in Louisiana and
we were playing John Curtisactually, and I had a tackle for
a loss.
And I get up and I look at ourbench and I do that right there.
Oh, I just, I just do thatright there and I didn't know.
I did it until we watched filmthe next day.
I, when I, when I was in a zoneI didn't know what I was doing

(19:24):
on the field, you know, and wewatched film the next day and I
got in trouble then but I didn'treally care.
All Coach said was, hey, wedon't do that, stevie, and moved
on.
Well, the next game I did itagain.
So I guess we did do that.
So it was my senior year, man,I was leaving to go to college

(19:47):
in the next couple of months, soI was like I'm doing whatever I
want to do, they don't flag me.
They didn't see it.
You know, stevie being stevie,so encapsulate.

Speaker 5 (19:55):
I know you and I didn't see every piece of video.
But 14 longhorns in the nflcombine and indie, that is a
significant number for anyprogram.
It's a record for Texas, Ithink.
But you know one of them, oneof your fellow defensive linemen
, counterparts, one guy who I'vealways thought is severely

(20:17):
underrated.
He was there.
Did you see Baron Sorrell's 40?
I did not.
I did not.
Oh my God, Check him out.

Speaker 4 (20:26):
That's sweet.

Speaker 5 (20:26):
It's for the conversation piece 4-7-2 for a
hybrid linebacker defensive.
He's not a linebacker, but a DNDN he can play the free
technique too, though that'sright.

(20:47):
What's your take on him,because?

Speaker 3 (20:50):
Upside, a bunch of upside man.
You know in the NFL when youright now in the NFL like they
draft a lot of potential and hehas a lot of potential on him,
so I think he helped his draftstop.
Now I will say this man thedumbest drill at the combine is
the 40, especially for a big man.

(21:11):
I hate it.
I absolutely hate it.
But these GMs put so muchweight into this 40 time,
especially when we havetechnology now that can clock
top speed in the actual gamesituations on the field.
No one's out there with cleatsand tights on running in a
straight line.
It's just the dumbest drill todo as an NFL combine.

(21:37):
That's my opinion.

Speaker 5 (21:38):
No, I agree, dave Barron.
You couldn't ask for a betterguy that uh.
He's intelligent, bright, um,and he's just.
He's been one of those guysthat has developed.
And we've got a guest who youknow can take credit for all
that he was his high schoolfootball coach.
Let's bring him in.

(21:59):
Look at this, jason Cecil.
What's?

Speaker 8 (22:11):
up guys.

Speaker 5 (22:12):
What's going on, my man you know, hey, he was a head
coach at McCallum High Schoolhere in Austin.
Aisd did great things there, pflugerville Conley, where he
identified this great talentnamed Jadae Barron.
But before we get to that, ashout-out to Jason Cecil, named

(22:34):
the head football coach atAustin High, the Maroons,
recently, this past week.
Loyal forever, it was the firsthigh school.
It used to be your campus aboveHouse Park Stadium, right,
congrats, brother.

Speaker 8 (22:50):
I appreciate it.
I'm fired up.
Couldn't be any more blessed tobe in this position.
I want to thank everybody thatgave me the opportunity, all our
players and everybody that'sreached out to help me get to
this point, Excited to get onthe job and get this thing going
.

Speaker 5 (23:04):
We are too, and, Stevie, you're going to have to
come out to House Park.
It's still their home field buta little bit farther away this
time, but we were just talkingabout Baron Sorrell.
You know the 40s.
It's kind of funny when you seea lineman, they're not ever
going to chase anyone down thesideline, but when you see your

(23:29):
guy move like this, I just wantto.
We're going to talk about Jaday, but pretty good outing in
Indianapolis Out of Texas.

Speaker 8 (23:39):
Off, he goes.

Speaker 2 (23:41):
Barron's first 40.
It's a 4-4 flash, that's.
That's a fantastic time.
For example, I stevie.

Speaker 5 (23:49):
First thing I gotta ask coach cecil um.
Did you see this ability, thispotential when he was young at
connelly high school inflflugerville?

Speaker 8 (24:00):
Yeah, he was.
I mean, he stood out like noother kid I've ever coached.
Honestly, that's the first 40I've ever seen the kid run.
Oh yeah, he was a.
You know we time him all, we doall.
We go through all that businessafter the season.
But he was a basketball kid forus as well and I always let
those guys hit it and get thebasketball as soon as we were
done with football.

(24:20):
So I never once got a 40 timeon him.
He ran track as soon as he waslike all right, I mean you knew
he was fast, he ran track.
I think he was like a 10, 700guy.
That kind of proved to me he'sfast.
But I spoke to somebody fromthe Rams last week and they were
like, well, what might be aweakness?
And I maybe it's 40 times, Idon't know, I've never seen one.
But I was fired up to see whathe did that day.

Speaker 3 (24:43):
Wow, coach, I just caught what you just said.
These GMs are calling highschool coaches.

Speaker 8 (24:49):
Yeah, he was.
It was somebody from playerpersonnel.
But I've got a few calls, someI think were legit, some that I
think were people reaching andtrying to do some dirty business
.
You know, it's been reallyinteresting.

Speaker 3 (25:05):
That's actually pretty cool man.
That's good, I think.
The other thing about Jadaythat we probably will talk about
here is I think he's a good kid, right, and I think that he
will be able to handle thesuccess of being a NFL player,
because just being good on thefield is much more than that in

(25:26):
the NFL.
I mean, these kids are whathe's 20, maybe 23, and about to
go and pull down a couplemillion dollars a year, a few
million dollars a year, and thattakes maturity just to handle
all of that man.
So you know, hats off to youfor coaching him in high school,
his parents for pouring intohim.

(25:47):
But I can just tell he's just agood kid.

Speaker 8 (25:51):
Yeah, he's a great kid.
I tell you he's got, from apersonality standpoint, one of
the best personalities I've evercoached.
You could get mad at him butyou weren't going to stay mad at
him very long.
He put a smile on your facereal quick.
Mom did a great job with him, easily coached.
He was better than everybodyand he knew it.
The thing I always try to getfrom him is I got to have your

(26:13):
best every single day because hecould get by with less than
that.
Very rarely did he do it, buthe was easy to correct.
I'm telling you, just a greatkid and I've seen him grow too.
You know, from the time he leftus he'd come by all the time
still and you could just seehe's getting to be a better man.
A better man.
Sark, those guys have done agood job with him Coach Joseph,

(26:37):
coach Gideon.
Like everybody that's touchedthat kid has helped build him up
and just him being who he is,made that easy, I'm sure.

Speaker 5 (26:43):
So Todd McShay, who I really enjoyed listening to.
I think he's one of the best,if not the best, at evaluating
talents and doing the background.
Like you mentioned, thesescouts are going as far back as
their high school coach to learnmore.
But Todd McShay talked aboutsomething he could tell he did

(27:08):
his homework about Jaday, andthis is what he had to say about
your former.

Speaker 2 (27:14):
DB.
He's one of the best I've everseen, jaday Baroness, at
detaching the ball from areceiver.
And so if he gets in there aquarter count late, or if he
gets there on time because buthe and he has the body control
to reach around, it's almostlike watching a snake when he
goes to attack, did he?

Speaker 5 (27:31):
have did he.
Was he like that, because Iknow I saw a few of your Conley
games when he was there, but I Ididn't get the chance to see
him in depth.
Was he like that, or was thatsomething that he learned to
manipulate use in hisdevelopment in college?

Speaker 8 (27:51):
I think a little bit of both.
I don't want to take too muchcredit.
The kid's a great player andhas great skills and great
timing and I think that's a bigpart of it is he has great
timing.
We played a ton of off man withhim.
You know we'd mix in some press, but a lot of off man and he
just had a natural knack and Ithink probably the thing that
makes him so good at that is hisphysicality.
You don't see a ton of superphysical DBs these days and he

(28:16):
is that, and I know a lot of histeammates are the same there.
But they're doing somethingright to get those kids to play
as physical as they do when youare that way, you're going to
detach the ball.

Speaker 5 (28:29):
That's a big piece of who he is.
Stevie, did you have anythingelse for Coach?

Speaker 3 (28:36):
No, I think we really said it all.
He's a really good kid.
Did you get a picture with himafter he won the Thorpe?

Speaker 8 (28:43):
No, I didn't Not yet.
I can't wait to get one.
In fact, my in-laws live up inOklahoma and I hadn't been up
there in a while, so now I got areason to go is go up there and
see the display that they gotup there on him.

Speaker 3 (28:57):
You have to man and display it in your office and
that's good for your future kidsto walk in your office like
this guy coached a Thorpe Awardwinner.
Let me shut up and listen tohim and see what he has to say.

Speaker 5 (29:10):
You know.
I will say you know becauseStevie Coach Cecil played
college football up in Oklahoma, division II.

Speaker 8 (29:20):
It was southwestern, one of the many double
directionals up in OklahomaDivision II, which it was
Southwestern, northwestern, oneof the many double directionals
up in Oklahoma.

Speaker 5 (29:28):
You played linebacker right.

Speaker 8 (29:29):
Yes.

Speaker 5 (29:30):
Yeah, I can see it too.
We've talked about it before.
But that Thorpe Award at theWestern Heritage Museum, it's
unbelievable what they've doneup there for that award.
The ceremony, it's first-class,top-notch.
But when Jaday was playing foryou at Connolly, there was

(29:52):
another guy over at Manor, and Imean Taj Brooks.
What he's done for himself,it's just like this group of the
5-1-2 boys and Andrew Makubanot only great athletes but
they're just good people.
And this is what Taj did.
And listen to the talent at theend, what he said about Taj.

Speaker 2 (30:16):
Let's see how he runs here 4-5-3, Peter Schrager.

Speaker 6 (30:22):
Ultra productive is right.
We know his stats at thecollege game at Texas Tech.
How about this Captain the lasttwo years, first team academic
All-American?
And I asked the running backsCoach who's the best blocking
back in this draft?
Said Todd Brooks, texas Tech.
Not even a question.

Speaker 5 (30:36):
So, coach, I'll ask you first you got a chance to
see him.
What do you know about thevalue placed on these NFL scouts
on blocking backs nowadays?
I mean to us there's a fewcoaches who still, like Bob
Stoops, used to value thefullback so much.
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (30:58):
Yeah, and I think it's all cyclical.
It's coming back again.
Month yeah, yeah, and I thinkit's all cyclical, it's coming
back again.
Obviously, in the NFL it's.
It's a vastly more importantmaybe than at any other level to
protect that high dollar manwith the arm back there, but I
think it's crucial and thatkid's good at.
I saw.
You know, he was that way inhigh school and he's continued
to be that way through collegeand hopefully it makes him some

(31:20):
money.

Speaker 3 (31:26):
Yeah, that's good.
It's more 5-1-2 kids out there,man.
So I'm really excited aboutwhat these kids are doing with
Leonard Moore over at Notre Dameand plenty of other ones.
So I think there's something inthe water right now.
It it just kind of blew upright now with all these great

(31:46):
college football guys coming out.
They're all going to be good inthe NFL.
They're all got good numbers.
I think there's Maybe notsomething in the water.
I think what I'm seeing rightnow because my kids are in
sports there are a lot oftrainers that they get training
outside of just football aroundtown in North Austin.

(32:15):
And then there's a guy over inPflugerville and he has all
these high school players.
All these guys have all thesehigh school players and these
players are wanting to get extrawork and the parents are paying
for it.
But they want to get extra work.
But you can see it starting topay off right now.
You know so, as much as workthat you can put in in this area
, there's plenty of peoplearound here that want to train

(32:36):
you and you can see it kind ofpaying off on the field right
now with all these 5-1-2 boys.

Speaker 5 (32:41):
Yeah, 100% yeah.
Hey, coach, we can't let you goand go to break without you
partaking in a Stories Insidethe man Cave tradition.
Man Cave stories there's beensome that are legendary and

(33:04):
there's been some I had to editfor obvious reasons, but they're
absolutely hilarious.
You know, sometimes I got torealize that not everyone are
like us.
Some people are very sensitive.
But is there a story in yourcareer playing career, coaching
career that's just as funnytoday as it was when it happened

(33:26):
.

Speaker 8 (33:27):
Yeah, I'm not real sensitive and I probably should
be edited a lot more than I am.

Speaker 5 (33:33):
You and I both.

Speaker 8 (33:34):
So I got a lot of those editable stories.
I'm going to try to leave thoseout, save those for a day after
I retire, maybe.
But I tell you the value ofcommunication right in a
platform like this.
Right, we're all on here.
You got long-form communication.
We're getting to talk it out.
I think communication is thekey to everything you can do in
life, right?

(33:55):
So I learned as a young coachback in Dumas High School.
I played Northwestern and thenI took my first high school job
back at my hometown in Dumas andhad been coaching these studs
in college and now I'm dealingwith these good kids, but not
ballers by any means.
And so when you look at thevalue and the importance of
clear and concise and just clearcommunication to your players,

(34:19):
I had a kid, a JV footballplayer, great kid, not a great
player by any means.
His name was Albert, and we'reat a JV game and we're getting
our teeth kicked in, and part ofthe reason because he's lined
up about two yards from the lineof scrimmage and he never sees
his keys at all.
And so I'm over on the sidelineyelling at him Albert, you've

(34:39):
got to loosen up what You've gotto loosen up, albert.
And he reaches down and hestarts touching his toes and
stretching them downstream, grabs his foot, pulls it back to
his butt, stretches that quadout, does some arm circles and
he's ready to go.
And we give up another firstdown on that.
Next one.
Other requests down on thatnext one.
Couldn't get a timeout calledsoon enough, so you got to know

(35:02):
what you're saying and make surethey understand your language
too.

Speaker 3 (35:05):
Communication is key, man, I get it.
I got it, yep.

Speaker 5 (35:08):
Communication is everything and I'm guilty of it
and I was in the damn businessfor 20-something years and some
of the worst communicators arein that industry we're talking
about.
That's funny Cause you know, weassume people know what we mean
when there's a good portion ofpeople who you just got to go in

(35:30):
detail.
Sometimes.
He mentioned Dumas, texas, homeof the demons.
If, for those who aren't surewhere that is, that's a lot of
people that go skiing inColorado go through Dumas, texas
, home of the demons.
For those who aren't sure wherethat is, that's a lot of people
that go skiing in Colorado, gothrough Dumas, correct?

Speaker 8 (35:45):
Yeah, anybody that asks where I'm from, tell them
Dumas.
Oh yeah, I stop there when I goskiing and other than that,
you're not going to know whereit is.
Home to a bunch of great people, hardworking folks.
But yeah, there ain't muchthere other than sports and hard
work and a few other things wewon't mention.

Speaker 5 (36:05):
Get it.
Yeah, that's where EdCunningham, Blake Brown at Cedar
Park, the basketball coach.
Oh, he's from Dumas, I thinkthere's a lot of Panhandle folks
down here.

Speaker 8 (36:21):
We all figured out there was a lot better weather
and athletes somewhere else, sowe made a great migration to
come down to some fine CentralTexas weather and some good kids
.

Speaker 5 (36:33):
And we're glad you've been here this long.
Hey, good girls, basketball upin the Panhandle, for sure,
absolutely.
We're glad you've been herethis long.
Hey, good girls, basketball upin the panhandle For sure,
absolutely.
Coach man, this is long overdue.
We got to all meet.
And Stevie I mentioned this tohim.
He's at Austin High School.
Arguably the best burger inAustin is literally right around

(36:54):
the corner off of Lake AustinBoulevard Pool Burger.
It's attached to Deep EddyCabaret.

Speaker 3 (36:59):
Yep Deep Eddy Pools, isn't it?

Speaker 5 (37:03):
Well, there's Deep Eddy Pool, but there's Deep Eddy
Pool Up the Hill Pool Burgerand then Deep Eddy Cabaret.

Speaker 4 (37:10):
Gotcha, I would love to man let's do it, we can hit
all three of them.

Speaker 8 (37:16):
What was that we can hit all three of them?
What was that we can?

Speaker 3 (37:20):
hit all three of them Absolutely.
This is fun, man.
I love talking to high schoolball coaches, man, because this
is where it starts for a lot ofkids.
Thank you for coming on.
And I got a degree in educationbecause my fallback plan was
coaching.

(37:40):
But I said you know what I gotto get into real estate because
I love real estate.
And I couldn't teach any kids, man, because my mouth was too
bad.
I would curse somebody out sohard they'd go tell their mom
and then I'd get fired anyway.
So hats off to you for moldingthe kids of this area.

(38:01):
Man, hats off.

Speaker 8 (38:03):
Thank you guys for having me on.
It was a lot of fun.

Speaker 5 (38:05):
Yeah, coach, we'll be in touch.
We'll hit up Pull Burger andhey man, congrats.
And follow Coach Cecil, theAustin High Maroons on all the
social media platforms.
They've got some good thingsgoing on over there.
You know they play big-timefootball.
I can't remember.
Are you guys still?
Did y'all move down to 5A?

Speaker 8 (38:25):
We did not.
We were about less than 25 kidsfrom that March.

Speaker 5 (38:33):
Let me do the snapshot next time of enrollment
.
Coach Cecil, congrats to youand your family.
We'll be in touch, brother.

Speaker 8 (38:39):
All right, sounds good.
Thank y'all.

Speaker 5 (38:41):
Thank you, stevie.
We're going to take a quickbreak, but on the other side
we're going to talk a little bitabout March Madness, get your
take on a few basketball-relateditems and you've got a pro tip
and we've got a new, dryer raceboard for it.
We'll see you guys on the otherside of this break.

Speaker 1 (38:59):
Here at Hard Grow Roofing we try to think outside
the box, to kind of get thecreative juices flowing.
So I brought in my friendStevie Lee, former defensive
tackle for the Texas Longhorns.
He's going to help the teamstrategize, really motivate them
, light a fire.

Speaker 3 (39:13):
This guy's going to block down.
This guy's going to block down.
You.
Put your butt into the guardand that way my Mike linebacker
gets free to do what.

Speaker 1 (39:23):
Not only are they gonna learn a thing or two, but
they're gonna also leave with agreat attitude and a bunch of
smiles on their faces.

Speaker 5 (39:30):
I'm sorry.
What does this have to do withroofing exactly?

Speaker 3 (39:34):
Get out Right now.
I said get out, get out Rightnow.

Speaker 1 (39:38):
I said get out For me .
That's what it's all about.
It's just having fun making ouremployees have a great time.

Speaker 5 (40:08):
Hargrove Roofing.
Know who's on your roof.
All right, stevie, it is March.
Happy Texas Independence Daytoday, when Texas became its own
country 1836 before statehood.

Speaker 3 (40:20):
Yeah, happy Texas Independence Day.
I had to learn all that stuffwhen I got here to Texas.
Man, Shout out to Texas forbeing its own.
Texas has its own style, man100%.
I am grateful that I'm here.
I have been a Texan longer thanI have been a Louisiana, so I'm

(40:43):
here now.
Man, I'm a Texan.

Speaker 5 (40:46):
Shout out to all the Tejanos and Tejanas we're all
one, we're Texas.

Speaker 7 (40:52):
All one, absolutely.

Speaker 5 (40:53):
Through and through All you Lone Star State loving
people.
We love you.
Hey, you saw the bumper.
We love you, yeah.
Hey you saw the bumper, thelittle transition.
It's March, march Madness.
The lower, mid-majors,low-major schools, their
conference tournaments arestarting, meaning they got to
win those tournaments to getinto the field of 68.
And we're going to do thebracket challenge again.

(41:15):
We had over 52 entries lastyear.
Let's do it we had great prizesfrom round rock express uh seats
, dirty martins.
We had other prizes but thewinner could not get a hold of
you.
The second place guy could notget a hold of you.
You got.
So pay attention to our socials, sign up, but message me your

(41:41):
contact info, your phone numberand your email address.
And one stipulation I couldn'tgive the third place person
because you lived in minnesota.
You've got to live in thecentral texas, within 100 miles
of austin.
You think that's a good rule.

Speaker 3 (41:59):
That's of Austin you think that's a good rule.
That's a good rule, great rule.

Speaker 5 (42:01):
That's a great rule.
Bracket challenge coming up.
Let's see if we can break the52.
We'll have three differenttypes of prizes.
That's what we're aiming for.
Round Rock Express Got to getback with them see if they're on
board.
And while we're talking aboutbasketball, how about the Vic
Schaefer's Texas women'sbasketball?
First year in the SEC theyclinched a share of the SEC

(42:25):
regular season championship.
Your thoughts on that, on thatbasketball team?

Speaker 3 (42:28):
I just left the game right now.
Man, the girls started out alittle bit slower than usual
against Florida, but they, they, they turned it on in the second
half.
I think the last final scorewas like 72-46.
I am really looking forward toMarch Madness, but I'm really
looking forward to the girls'games.

(42:49):
Man, yeah, the girls' game hasreally, really grown.
Yeah, with Kaitlin Clark lastyear and Angel Reese and Flo Jay
over at LSU, lsu, and then ourwhole staff not staff, but our
whole team.
We play as a whole, you know, and so it's been fun to watch.

(43:11):
It was fun to see them playtoday.
Moody Center is beautiful.
It was beautiful weatheroutside.
It was just nice to be outthere.

Speaker 5 (43:18):
They will host.
Unlike the men's NCAAtournament, texas will host
first and second round gamesthat first weekend.
Go online now.
I've already got my tickets.
You buy the all-session threegames and it's less than $100
for two seats.

Speaker 3 (43:35):
Oh, wow.

Speaker 5 (43:36):
If they're still available.
If they're still available, Ifthey're still available, Texas
men they're on the outsidelooking in getting the
tournament.
I believe they now have 14losses.
What's your thought on RodneyTerry?
His buyout would be $7.2million.
Is a change needed?

Speaker 3 (43:54):
Man, I don't really know.
I like Terry.
It seems like the players likeTerry, but we do have to be
better.
We have to do better, man.
But also in the same breath, the SEC is just loaded with
teams.
You know they're looking at howmany 12 teams going into the

(44:14):
tournament from the SEC.

Speaker 5 (44:15):
Essentially, the Texas is 16-13 right now.

Speaker 3 (44:19):
Yeah, All right.

Speaker 5 (44:20):
And they've lost three straight.
Earlier this week took Arkansasto overtime in Fayetteville,
they got Trey Johnson, who'sperhaps the best player in the
country maybe if one of the topfive.

Speaker 3 (44:33):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (44:33):
They're not going to make it, man.
They're 5-11.
They've got two regular seasongames left, so in my opinion,
the only way they're going toget in is if they win these last
two and win two at the.

Speaker 3 (44:46):
SEC tournament yeah.

Speaker 5 (44:48):
I don't know man.

Speaker 3 (44:49):
It is going to be tough, but it's the SEC like.
I said is loaded, but we dohave to be better I don't know
who's out there that we get.

Speaker 5 (45:07):
I want to welcome in our new addition, our new dry
erase board.
Every pro tip.
If it is a business, somewhereto dine, whatnot we're going to
promote it and we even havepictures.
Stevie, you live in a RoundRock, Georgetown area, Yep.
And Saturday morning youabsolutely abused me with this.
I was salivating, but, as youcan read, El Grandpa's Mexican

(45:34):
barbecue in G-Town, Yep.
At first I thought that was you.
The guy has the same build.
Is it just a food truck?

Speaker 3 (45:43):
Yeah, it's a food truck.
That is where they prep thefood.
Off to the other side is thepit I guess you can call it,
because they actually it's alllamb products, right, and so
they actually smoked the lamb inthis.

(46:04):
They built this pit on thefloor of the trailer and they
put like the banana leaves ontop of it and like smoke it and
that, so it comes out with greatflavor.
They put it on a homemadetortilla for you.

Speaker 5 (46:21):
Oh, you rolled your R Tortilla.

Speaker 3 (46:23):
Tortilla.
Yeah, they're very, very niceout there.
My wife and I were cleaning upour table and about to leave,
grandpa came over and said hi,thank you for coming out.
How'd you like it?
Please come back.
He came out and shook your handand everything.
Man, he's a real nice older guy.

(46:45):
I felt like it was real.
He probably grew up cookinglike that.
You can taste the love in thefood, man.
It was really good.

Speaker 5 (46:57):
We're very spoiled and in Spanish Grandpa, I'm
shocked it doesn't say El Abuelo.

Speaker 3 (47:03):
Yeah, yeah, I hear you.
Yeah, I thought it was the samething, but he called it El
Grandpa.
So when he walked up, I saidare you El Grandpa?
He said, yes, I am El Grandpa,el Grandpa, yeah.
So that's my pro tip.
Guys, man, get up there, it is.

Speaker 5 (47:19):
Follow El Grandpa.
Yeah, and visit, bring thembusiness.

Speaker 3 (47:31):
Yeah, absolutely.
Just type it in your GPS, getout there.
It's kind of out in the middleof nowhere in Georgetown man,
but it was a beautiful day.
My wife and I just got up inthe morning and said let's go
get a taco and we drove overthere and you know, you get out
and you're outside eating andeverybody's just very nice.
It was really cool.

Speaker 5 (47:44):
I like it a lot.
I think you know what we oughtto do is if we connect with them
, you and I go find out andwe'll do a video story on how
they make their tacos Tik Tok inthe man cave.
There's a lot of trends, a lotof trends that are couples are
doing and partaking.
Then I find this rather amusingthe uh, what are you doing,

(48:07):
trent?

Speaker 7 (48:07):
I'm peeking through the blinds.
What are you doing?

Speaker 2 (48:11):
I'm opening up your butt, cheeks.
What are you doing?
I'm mashing potatoes.
What are you doing?
I'm milking a cow.
What are you doing?
I'm jerking off.
What are you doing?

Speaker 7 (48:26):
I'm disinfecting the table.
What are you doing?

Speaker 1 (48:28):
I'm calling a cat over.
What are you doing?

Speaker 2 (48:31):
I'm pulling the trigger.
What are you doing, Andrea?
What?

Speaker 4 (48:35):
I didn't know you were like that I'm a little
thing.

Speaker 7 (48:37):
What are you doing?

Speaker 4 (48:38):
I'm practicing for later.
What are you doing?

Speaker 2 (48:42):
I'm skiing what are you doing?
I'm dancing what are you doing?

Speaker 4 (48:45):
Andrea, that's not how you dance.

Speaker 2 (48:47):
I'm doing a Romanian deadlift.
What are you doing?

Speaker 1 (48:50):
I'm putting my pants on.
What are you doing?

Speaker 5 (48:55):
You and Summer need to partake and post it ASAP.

Speaker 3 (48:58):
Yeah, we probably should, but somebody need to
help that guy out.
You knew what was on his mind100% I'd be doing the same thing
.

Speaker 5 (49:09):
I would have zero filters.
Exactly Good-looking couple,though.

Speaker 9 (49:15):
Hey man, Tell me something good.

Speaker 5 (49:22):
Stevie Lee.
For those watching for thefirst time, this is what we
enjoy.
We love dry race boards and wealso love positivity.
Yeah, tell me something good.

Speaker 3 (49:34):
My brother, tell me something good, man, I'm just
going to be positive.
Spring is coming up, we're inMarch, march Madness is coming
up, man, something good is just, man, keep a smile on your face.
Y'all, don't take life tooserious.
We're all in this worldtogether.

(49:56):
We're going to bump into eachother, but you know what?
Let's bump into each other witha smile and being gracious,
thankful that we are alive, because a lot of people haven't
made it this far.
Guys, that's something good,man.
I just feel real positive rightnow.
Man, 2024 wasn't a great yearfor a lot of people, but 2025 is

(50:20):
looking up really good for mepersonally, for my family.
It's going to be tough becausemy daughter is going to go off
to college, but I'm lookingforward to that next chapter in
her life, so that's somethinggood.
Y'all just stay positive.
Keep me in your prayers because, man, my baby leaving that's
going to be different for me,man.

(50:43):
Keep your head up guys and justknow, if nobody else told you,
I'm telling you right now I loveyou.

Speaker 5 (50:52):
I love you, brother.
Hey, you know one thing thatI'm not everyone everyone's a a
big time communicator and yougot to respect people's
boundaries, whatnot.
But man, if someone, if, if, ifsomeone is special to you or
you have respect for them andthey mean something to you, you

(51:16):
know what, find a way to havethat conversation with, to have
that, have a conversation withthat person and tell them how
you feel, because maybe it'sbecause I'm getting older or
whatnot, or maybe I'm justnoticing it, or maybe it's
because of what I've experiencedthe last few years man people

(51:42):
have regrets.
Let's let bygones be bygoneswith people who really mean
something to you and think abouthow, when you're playing
football or you're in business, you've got to think two steps
ahead, two plays ahead.
Think about months, severalmonths ahead, and what that may

(52:06):
look like if you hold a grudgeor you keep putting off a
certain or a conversation, whatyou want to say to somebody,
because if they mean somethingto you, you may never get that
chance.

Speaker 9 (52:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (52:20):
There's an expiration date.
Let's avoid that expirationdate.
And it's beautiful time of yearin Austin, texas, perhaps the
best time to be dining out on aporch.
Yep, that's all I'm going tosay.
Stevie Lee, it's been fun.
And a big shout out to PhillipGeiger and coach Jason Cecil
both of you guys coming onto theshow.
Phillip, two-time returningalumni.

(52:43):
He and Stevie played togetherat Shreveport Evangel and at
Texas.
They grew up together.
They're best of friends.
You guys are like brothers.
Appreciate Phillip and CoachCecil.

Boysober

Have you ever wondered what life might be like if you stopped worrying about being wanted, and focused on understanding what you actually want?
