Speaker 1 (00:02):
Well, chicago Wolves have had an up-and-down season
so far and lately they've beenreally startling, losing their
last four games and beingoutscored 17-6.
The Wolves currently sit infourth place overall in the
Central Division, six pointsback of Grand Rapids.
To bring us up to date on thelatest with the Wolves, our

(00:23):
Storm Tracker, chicago WolvesInsider, andrew Rinaldi hey,
andrew, how's it going?

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Going pretty good, Tom, aside from some of the past
couple results there.
But you know what?
We'll talk about it.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
We'll get it over Well for sure.
You know, I noticed thestruggle.
I mean, they've been outscoredbadly, have not played well, and
so I thought I'd check thelineup card just to see who's
been playing, and it looks liketheir team is pretty well intact
.
All the top guys are there, soit's not an injury problem.

(00:59):
It doesn't seem like the flubug which was, of course,
hitting the Carolina Hurricanes.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
So what's going on?
It's just I think you canattribute it to a couple
different factors.
You know the beginning of thisstreak was that second game in
Bakersfield, West Coast kind of.
You know, different time zoneand all that several different
time zones away.
And you can see, just this teamjust didn't really have its

(01:29):
legs under it and they kind ofthey kind of got caved in
against a condors team that'skind of at the bottom of their
division, but you can kind ofwrite it off as it's kind of a
one-off.
The rockford game was just kindof sloppy all around for this
team Just a lot of turnovers, some undisciplined penalties.
They got behind the eight ballreally quick and from there the

(01:52):
floor just kind of caved in onthem.
And then they had that seriesagainst Cleveland and they might
not seem super impressive inthe standings right now, but
this is still a team that has aton of veteran presence on it.
They were a goal away fromupsetting Hershey and the Calder
Cup playoffs.
So it's it's.
It's.

(02:13):
It's a tough stretch right now.
Um, you'd like to see some, some more of these looks,
especially with the manadvantage kind of starting to go
in and help the guys out alittle bit, but I I think
they're just kind of starting togo in and help the guys out a
little bit, but I think they'rejust kind of hitting a couple
potholes in the road.
I don't think that there's youknow where I was in my other

(02:33):
beat in Grand Rapids, where I'mkind of leaning more towards the
panic button from how that'splayed for the last couple of
weeks.
I'm still liking what I'm seeingfrom Chicago.
I still think that, you know, there's just kind of some issues
that need to be ironed out overthe long run and that it's just
.
They're just kind of in a bumpypatch in the road for this
point right now.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
Yeah, for sure, and I know that.
You know they've been seemingto have a little bit more
success on the penalty kill, butcertainly the power play has
been a problem.
They're what?
Two for 17 in their last, uh,number of games yeah, and
overall they're bottom five inthe entire ahl.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
So I feel like you know, when you you have a, a
power play monster quarterbacklike Scott Morrow, an elite
level trigger man like BradleyNadeau, like it's kind of
incredible to see where they'reat and with the man advantage, I

(03:33):
actually like I knew there werestruggles here and there, but I
didn't quite realize they werethat bad until I kind of checked
the stats this weekend.
So that was a littleeye-opening to me personally.
But I kind of think that theycan be a little one-dimensional

(03:55):
on the power play there.
I think that, right, if you'renot, it's all going through
Nadeau seemingly at this moment, going through Nadeau seemingly
at this moment, and if he's notgoing to be firing them in, then
there's not a whole lot ofoptions.
Two and three, unfortunately, itfeels a lot like like those
early Alexander Ovechkin seasonsin Washington where it's like,

(04:19):
well, we're going to feed himbecause there's we.
Just no one else seems to havethat hot stick lately.
And I mean, you know, when theykeep going in for Bradley it's
hard to justify against it.
But I think that he could use alittle help on the man
advantage.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
Well, and Noah Gundler, I think, started the
season and he was having somesuccess on the power play, for
sure, and he's one of those guysthat you're going to look at.
Another guy that I think aboutand seems to have slipped down
to the third line right now, playing right wing again, is
Felix Ungersorm.
Is he challenged a little bitthis year?

Speaker 2 (05:00):
Well, I mean, he's you know he's a teenager and I
think it's you know, we had suchsky-high expectations for Felix
, especially considering how hisfirst camp in Carolina he kind
of was really pushing theenvelope there in that training
camp and in preseason, and so Ithink the expectation was for

(05:23):
him to just come in andabsolutely blow the doors down
in Chicago and you're seeing themakings for a good player in
time.
But I still think that you know, there's just so much to adjust
for him.
They've been trying him out atcenter and it's just, it's such

(05:44):
a completely different worldthan playing a winger.
So I think they're trying toget him to be a little more
comfortable in his own skatesand put him up there on the wing
, which I think is a little morenatural for him.
He's looking a little morenatural.
I love the way that he's able toprotect the puck.
I love his vision.
I love the way that he's ableto protect the puck.

(06:05):
I love his vision.
I just he just needs to be alittle stronger on the puck.
I feel when you're that firstone that's in there in the
corners it's unfortunately thenature of this league You're
going to get smacked and youcan't be worried about getting
smacked, and I've seen it withYonatan Berrigan, similar type
of player who's not the biggestguy on the ice, but you know

(06:25):
he's after a while.
You know you get adjusted tothe defensemen in this league
and how they're going to becoming after you and you learn
to make plays and that's just.
It's just going to take sometime with Felix and you know I
think it's not everyone's goingto be Bradley Nadeau and come in
and just first season, justdynamite immediately and that's

(06:48):
okay.
I think, I think it's good forhim to face a little bit of
adversity and and and figure itout, because and not
everything's going to just cometo him naturally.
So is it a little disappointing?
Sure, but I'm not, you know, but I'm not, you know.
Again, I'm not hitting anypanic buttons with these guys,
not yet.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
Well and you know, certainly earlier in the year we
saw some outstanding plays byFelix Ungersorm.
He made a number of outstandingsetups on goals that were, you
know, that were really highlight, almost highlight real goals.
He's a guy that obviously hasthe skills and I think he was.
He went and played for his homecountry, of course, in the

(07:29):
junior tournament and had achance to play right wing again
and I think that was good forhim and he seems like he's more
suited to that.
We know he's got to bulk up,he's got to learn the pro game
and so on.
But I agree with you, andrew, Ithink he definitely is going to
have his ups and downs in hisfirst pro season with Chicago
and we just have to be ready forthat.

(07:50):
And I know he's being sheltereda little bit, which is great.
Right now he's on that thirdline with Pavlychev and I think
they've got Turcotte or otherskind of working on the wing with
him.
So he's got some veteranplayers helping him out and
hopefully he'll find his way.

(08:13):
Now you did mention, of course, bradley Nadeau.
Bradley is probably one of theguys that hasn't missed a beat.
He's just continuing to tear upthe league.
He's got 19 goals, now 34points.
He's really been playingextremely well.
What are you seeing withBradley Nadeau these days?

Speaker 2 (08:27):
I don't know really what more I can say about him
that I've already said severaltimes in the past Just absolute
elite NHL shot.
That's blowing by goaltendersat this level and it's
consistent.
You can see guys that can kindof score in bunches and then

(08:48):
maybe go cold for a while.
Since he's come back from theworld juniors, this kid's just
been absolute fire and it's it'snot a question of you know if
it's a question of how many atthis point and um, it's, it's,
it's been a real treat to watch.
You could see early on in thisseason just instant chemistry

(09:08):
with ryan suzuki, yes, andthat's been, that's been kind of
a bit of the catalyst for hissuccess there.
And you know, at this pointit's really.
I think what this, this, thisorganization is going to look
for is just for him, to keep itconsistent, for him to you know
kind of round out some of theother, you know the other

(09:31):
details.
I have liked what I've seenfrom him off the puck as well.
I think he's got a bit of a,he's maturing more and more
every day into that sort offactor of his game.
So I, you know, I like what I'mseeing from Bradley a lot.
Hopefully I'm going to continueto like it as we get into the

(09:53):
down-to-the-stretch run heregearing up for the playoffs.
He's going to be a guy thatthey're going to continue to
lean on for the bulk of theoffense.
As of right now, he's showingno signs of stopping.
Again for the bulk of theoffense, and as of right now,
he's showing no signs ofstopping.
So again for the hot hand, likethe Ovechkin and the Capitals
just keep feeding, why not?

Speaker 1 (10:13):
Well, rightfully so, and I guess you kind of
addressed what I've beenwondering about with Nadeau.
I mean, clearly he's a naturalgoal scorer, there's no question
.
And the bigger thing he'll needto work on, of course, is this
full 200 foot game, his gameaway from the puck, as you
mentioned, and just being asolid defensive player as well,

(10:33):
and that's going to be the keyfor him.
I you know, at this stage it'sgoing to be interesting as he
continues to round out his gameand show this offensive
capability.
This year, as a rookie in theAmerican hockey league, Um, he's
going to push for a spot in thefall and the key will be can he
round out his game sufficientlyenough to get a real, true shot

(10:57):
with the Canes?
And I hope he does, because Ithink he's starting to show that
from an offensive perspective.
There's no questions with thisguy.

Speaker 2 (11:06):
Yeah, he's not going to be able to cheat the zone and
ride Bryn Mindamore system.
I tell you that, not that hedoes in Chicago, he's, he, he's,
he's not a.
He's not a cherry picker by anymeans, but just saying that,
it's he's, you know he's, he hasthe ample opportunities in
Chicago to work on those aspectshere, whereas, and you know,

(11:33):
some other franchises might seewhat he's doing offensively and
try and pull him up and give theteam some kind of spark,
whereas I think they're, they'rethey're doing the right thing
by allowing him to naturallykind of grow and mature in
chicago, with with ampleopportunities to work on that,
while also refining his gamewith the puck as well, which is,
I mean, again, the results havekind of spoken themselves.

(11:55):
He doesn't even turn 20 untilmay and he's, you know, putting
up historic goal scoring numbersfor a teenager at this level
yes, I think he's up there withjust behind jason spezza's
record, uh run.
So it's.
It'll be fun if he can keepthis up.
I hope he does.

Speaker 1 (12:14):
Yeah, I mean it's outstanding and for sure.
I mean I kind of totally agreeon what you're just saying to
Andrew, that the Canes now havea solid American Hockey League
franchise.
They don't need to rush theseplayers.
You know players like him andcertainly Scott Morrow and some

(12:35):
of the other younger guys thatare kind of finding their way in
the pros, some of the blueliners and so on.
I think this is justoutstanding for the Canes.
These players are definitelyplayers that have a future with
the Hurricanes or certainly inthe National Hockey League, and
the fact that they can spend thetime now get great coaching, I

(12:56):
think the crew in Chicago isdoing a great job and continue
to develop as they should.
And you're absolutely right, some of their times with the
Canes and some of their teamsthey'd be calling Bradley in a
hurry to try to get some of thatoffense so great stuff with him
.
I wanted to talk aboutgoaltending for a minute.

(13:17):
I've seen some interestingthings with the goaltending.
So you know they had DustinTokarski come back.
He and Spencer Martin have beencarrying the load.
They're both sitting around2.37242 and that kind of range
goals against.
Martin, of course, has beenwith a heavier workload.
He's won 14 games for theWolves this year.

(13:39):
We're not seeing much aboutRuslan Kazeev these days.
What's happening with thegoaltending?

Speaker 2 (13:47):
Yeah, it's been mostly a heavy dose of Spencer
Martin.
And then Dustin Tokarski getsmost of that backup role there.
Yeah, because he has been infor a couple of spot starts here
and there and I think he waskind of thrust up into that
backup role a little quickerthan usual, that backup role a

(14:11):
little quicker than usual andyou know, he kind of he showed
flashes of his talent.
Ultimately, I think you knowit's been a little tough for the
team to kind of rely on him.
He's just, unfortunately, Idon't think he's had a game
where he's given up less thanthree goals since.

Speaker 1 (14:31):
December.

Speaker 2 (14:34):
But that's again.
He's being so raw, so young inthis type of league.
It's kind of natural.
I'm not really certain what theplan is for him if they, if
they just want to get himexposed to how you know the, the
, the coaching and just kind ofhow the pro game works at the

(14:58):
ahl, instead of getting him somestarts down, maybe with the
bloomington bison, along withyaniv peretz?
Um, yeah, I, I, but I I don'treally have that kind of
intimate plan.
They did that's.
They don't really have thatkind of intimate plan.
They don't really share with me.

Speaker 1 (15:13):
Stan's not telling you what his plan is for his
goaltenders.
Not yet, no.

Speaker 2 (15:19):
It's.
You know whether it's Stan'splan or it's Carolina's plan,
you know However it aims to be.
I haven't really had any reasonto, you know, question their
judgment for now.
So it might be a littleunorthodox to carry three
goalies as of this time, especially for someone as young

(15:39):
as Kazeev, who would benefitfrom more starts and more
playing time.
I'm just going to defer to theguys up in Raleigh and Chicago
know him better than I do,that's for sure.

Speaker 1 (15:55):
Well, kazeev, you know his numbers.
He's sitting at 3.33 goalsagainst.
The tough part is his savepercentage at 876.
Not surprising, I mean, again,as you say, he's learning his
craft.
You know we've talked a littlebit about this before too,
andrew, that you know.
Stan Dubicki has had experiencewith Russian goaltenders before
, of course, he spent time withPiotr and so on, and he's a

(16:19):
great guy to continue to mentorKazeev.
Now.
Another possibility and whoknows what happens as the
deadline comes close is we mightsee one of these veterans moved
Spencer Martin or DustinTokarski, you know, any number
of things could happen.
Who knows what that holds.
But again, I kind of agree withyou.

(16:41):
I think, for whatever reason, they want to keep Kazeev here.
Peretz has gone down and he'splayed very, very well for
Bloomingtonton, so that's goodnews.
But uh, again, we'll have tosee how this plays out.
He certainly needs to get moreplaying time, that's for sure,
and they've got to figure outhow that, how that all comes
together.
But uh, I'm a I'm a big fan ofkazeev.

(17:04):
I've said this many times.
I think he's got a great futurewith the hurricanes and I'd
like to see him get some moreplaying time I agree.

Speaker 2 (17:11):
agree, yeah, I think it's just a matter of you know,
you mentioned it a younggoaltender that just kind of
needs to find his groove.
But it's hard to find yourgroove if you're not in the net.

Speaker 1 (17:24):
So I'd like to see him down in Bloomington.

Speaker 2 (17:27):
Get him just kind of get you know, don't get the legs
super cold, because then theworst case scenario would be if
something you know, if there'seither a call up or an injury.
Now you have this kid who's icecold and you're again relying
on him before, and whereas Ithink earlier in the season it
was like you had no choice.
Right At this time you can putyourself in a better situation

(17:51):
for success.

Speaker 1 (17:52):
But again, I defer to the guys who get paid to manage
this kind of stuff for sure, and I'm sure they have a plan uh
again, because he's he's sohighly rated in the in the
goaltending uh group that theyhave coming along.
I think they're they're justtrying to do it right, so I
think that's great.
I mentioned earlier that when Ilooked at the lineup pretty

(18:17):
well stacked with the keyplayers of the Wolves and one of
the guys that just came backfrom a cup of coffee with the
Hurricanes, of course, was ScottMorrill.
You know Morrill has had anoutstanding season as you've
seen him play so much this yearand play so well.
He leads the AHL in assists andpoints.

(18:39):
By a rookie defenseman.
He's got 19 assists, 29 points.
He's actually got more thanthat now.
He's tied for fourth amongstall defensemen, so this is an
impressive story.
He's the first AHL defensemansince the 2013-14 season to get
two hat tricks in a season.
I mean that's insane.
And he's got three game-winninggoals to go along with it.

(19:01):
Morrill, I thought he accountedfor himself quite nicely with
the Hurricanes.
You recall that Brent Nemourssaid he's just playing so darn
well down there.
We had to bring him up and theyhad the situation where they
were battling flu and playerswere out.
So it was an opportunity forthem to bring someone up from

(19:22):
Chicago, and Morrow to me is aplayer that is really starting
to make a case to be on theCanes roster next season.
What are you seeing with Scottsince he returned?

Speaker 2 (19:36):
Yeah, I said before, you know what he can do with the
puck is quite magical and Ithink most people have seen his
goal against Rockford and if youhaven't, then I would suggest
going and searching thathighlight up.
I did see the goal.
Yeah, he just dog walks threeice hogs and on his way to

(19:58):
burying a big goal there for theWolves.
And you know, I had a chat withSpiros Anastas about it, the
assistant coach and the leaderof the defensive unit the
assistant coach and the leaderof the defensive unit and he
made sure to point out that like, yeah, the points are going to
be like the big talking points, they're going to be what really

(20:22):
kind of draws everyone'sattention and really kind of
what helped him make theall-star team in his first year
in the AHL.
But what's allowed him toreally catch the attention of
the coaching staff up in Raleighand allowed him to kind of get
that cup of coffee with theHurricanes, is how well he's
improved off the puck and that'sincluding getting to the puck

(20:44):
first and not being afraid ofthat first contact.
There's been his gap control.
It's those little details thatseparate from your offensive
dynamos, from your true elitenumber one kind of talents which
he's definitely evolved into inhis short time here in Chicago.

(21:08):
And so he's playing all youknow all situations and you know
, great in all three zones onthe special teams and everything
I've, you know, I mentionedhe's, he's been a monster, he's
a quarterback in the power play, one of the guys that's been,
you know, helping contribute tothat, that bottom five unit.
But he it's, it's, it's, it'sbeen's been, you know, a treat

(21:32):
to watch this kid take so manysteps forward in such a small
amount of time.
And you know, I think we allwere aware of his talent coming
in.
But now it's, you know, you, when you refine that with you
know the talk points with thecoach, and and coach anastas
loves hearing him in the videoroom and going over even some of

(21:54):
the tough conversations thatthey've had to have over some
games that maybe weren't sogreat.
He's taken it all in stride andhe's learned from good games
and bad games.
So that's what you want from apro, that's what you want from a
guy who's gonna not stay herevery much longer in chicago, but
you know I'm gonna enjoy it forall the games that he that he's

(22:16):
here with the wolves well, certainly, uh, with the canes
he's looked like a differentplayer from last year.

Speaker 1 (22:22):
Um, you know, much more confident, much more
involved defensively.
Uh, solid gaps, uh just justreally looks like he's learning
fast and the comments thatBrendan Moore certainly you know
are significant in terms of hisfuture.
Because if Rod's a guy thatbelieves you're making good

(22:43):
progress, then you're on hisradar, which is critical, which
is critical, and, you know, thinking about the Canes next
year.
It's kind of interestingbecause we've got two veteran
defensemen who are going to beunrestricted free agents, of
course.
That's Dmitry Orlov and BrentBurns, which opens up a couple
of spots on the blue.
We know that Alexander Nikitinis probably heading over to take

(23:08):
one of those, and I think ScottMorrow has an excellent
opportunity to grab that otherone because it is a right shot
position.
So he's definitely in the mixand he's making his case very
strongly at this stage for sure.
So we'll keep an eye on MrMorrow and, as you say, we'll

(23:29):
enjoy his good play with Chicagoas long as he's he's with the
wolves, and that's anothersituation that I think is a good
one, where the Canes can leavehim there as he continues to
grow his game and and play inall situations and play big
minutes.
So it's, it's great stuff forMorrow.
Hey, talking about thedefensive core, another guy
that's, I think, continuing togrow and was on, I think, a

(23:53):
seven-game point streak, wasDominic Fensori, and he, of
course, has been playing somebig minutes alongside Scott
Morrow.
We've talked about Dominicbefore.
How's he been playing lately?

Speaker 2 (24:08):
Yeah, he was on that point streak for a while and
then, you know, the points kindof haven't really been coming
over this losing streak but theyhaven't been coming for
everyone.
So you know, I can't really sayit's any, it's any of dom's
fault or anything, but he's been, he's been giving exactly kind
of what chicago has been lookingfor.
He's another dynamic forcethat's able to to move that puck

(24:29):
.
And I've also been veryimpressed with with how he's
been playing in his own end, because I think there's a bit of
a stigma behind, you know, thatsmaller defenseman who can
really wheel and deal and it'slike, okay, well, all you got to
do is go right at him, rightand, um, I think some opponents
have tried getting in in dom'sface, thinking that they can

(24:49):
just kind of push him around andhe's kind of taking it to some
of these guys where he's, youknow, he might be giving up some
inches, giving up some pounds, but he's not backing down.
He doesn't back down in thecorners in front of the net
anywhere, and I love to see that.
I love to see that.
You know he's not, you know, playing timid.
He's not, you know, playingtimid.
He's not afraid of contact oranything like that.

(25:11):
He's actually going to becoming at you and so you know,
when you got that kind of littlebit of bowling ball, it's got a
low center of gravity.
You can kind of catch theseguys off guard.
It's, it's, it's.
It's created a lot of funhockey for him and I think you
know he's it's.
I think the only thing thathe's got working against him is

(25:31):
kind of the.
You know you've mentioned someof the other names up in
Carolina that are probably aheadof him in the depth chart.
It's just, it's a strong unitin the NHL, so he's.
I think you know he's got ashot.
I think he's got a shot at alegit career ahead of him if he

(25:53):
keeps playing like this.
And you know he's become afavorite of mine and I might be
a little biased because he's got, you know, that fensore, that
Italian, and I'm not afraid toadmit that I'm aware of my own
biases when they show up.

Speaker 1 (26:11):
Good for you.

Speaker 2 (26:12):
You know, I've also come to really admire his game
and really admire his attitudeand his approach to how he you
know how he handles it.
Again, I think a lot of peoplekind of have written him off a
little bit.
With his size and all that, Ithink he can prove a lot of
people wrong and if he continueshis strong play he's going to
get you know more of thatspotlight.

Speaker 1 (26:34):
Yeah, and he's.
He's certainly buildingconfidence with the coaching
staff.
They play him in all situations.
He's a guy that you know.
He's a former captain of Bostoncollege, a heck of a player, a
Hobie Baker finalist a couple oftimes.
This guy was a great player.
So it's not, you know, weshouldn't really be surprised

(26:58):
that he's starting to really, you know, round his game out in
the pros.
Uh, yeah, he's battling size,but, uh, he's.
He's a guy that, uh, I think,with his potential and I'm like
you, I'm a huge fan of dom's Ithink he, I've loved him in the
prospect showcases, I I reallylike what he's doing now and I
just feel like he's going to bea guy that's going to be biting
for a spot in the not toodistant future.
So, another exciting playerthat you get to watch in Chicago
Well, one of the guys that alsocame back and filled up the

(27:25):
lineup recently from theHurricanes, of course was Yuhha
Jaska, and Jaska is a realfavorite of mine and of a lot of
people.
I think he's just a great guyand I wanted to read what he
said when he came back.
I thought it was quite telling, and this is what Juha said.
He said it was amazing.
Of course, it was nice to bethere for so long.

(27:47):
One month I could really getused to the game and used to the
rhythm of what is normal lifein the NHL.
It was a really good experienceand now I know what I need to
get better at.
Every day you don't even unpackyour stuff, because every day
you could get sent down.
The next dream is to be an NHLplayer and know you're going to

(28:08):
stay there.
I know this is really good forme.
The game is so hard up there soI need to get way better and
this is the perfect spot todevelop my game with this group
and with these guys.
He's really a special guy, Ithink, and I really liked what
he did with the Hurricanes.
He's definitely a guy thatdoesn't hurt you when he's on

(28:29):
the ice and he gives a fulleffort and the people love him.
What are you seeing with Juha?

Speaker 2 (28:34):
Yeah, if that quote doesn't speak exactly to the
kind of player he is and themindset that he has, then you
know, I don't really know whatmore to tell you.
But you know I can't believe itwas a month, wow.
But yeah, he, you know Kane'sfans saw exactly what he was
capable of when he went up thereand you know he's been down for

(28:57):
, I think, three games now atthis point and I don't think he
has any points.
But it's certainly not for lackof opportunity, lack of, you
know, effort or anything likethat.
It's just the way the puck'sbeen bouncing these last couple
of games.
But you know, I, I if, if,going back to that quote, you

(29:18):
know I think he's he's got hismind set right where he's just
going to come in and continue toto play his game at the level
that you know, he knows what, what is expected him, he knows
what he's got to bring everynight and as long as he just
keeps doing that, I'm sure he'sgoing to end up back in Carolina
sooner rather than later andI'm going to hate to lose him

(29:42):
because he became a favorite ofmine very quickly at first and
you know it's.
I mean, I'm always happy to seethe guys move up and succeed at
the next level.
But I can be a little selfishand kind of hope that they kind
of hang on down here for acouple more games.
But at any rate, you know whatyou're getting every night from

(30:06):
him.
You're knowing just kind of howresponsible he is and in all
three zones, um, he playspenalty kill, he plays power
play, he does anything.
That's, that's that's asked ofhim and and you know you can't
really ask for for much morethan that than this guy who's.
He's just so versatile and andthe fact that you can slot him
in just about anywhere is it's,it's a trait that these coaches

(30:29):
really love and admire and it's.
It speaks volumes kind of howcoaching staffs, either in
chicago, carolina, praise whathe brings the lineup.
So I hope he's in chicago alittle longer, but I don't think
I, I think he's, I think he'sgot carolina written all over
him a little later in the seasonhere.

Speaker 1 (30:50):
Well, he definitely, you know, is going to be in the
mix for sure, because he's beena solid performer when he's been
up there.
You know he's not getting theoffense, but certainly on that
fourth line he's doing what he'ssupposed to do.
He's pushing in the offensivezone, he's laying on the body,
he's doing all the right kind ofthings.
And I'm like you.

(31:10):
I'm like you, I'm a big fan ofJuhad.
You know what?
He came over without anyfanfare, nobody even really knew
who he was, and you have togive the Canes scouting staff
kudos for finding a player likethis kind of hidden in Finland.
And now he's coming over hereand starting to make his mark
and for sure he'll continue toshine with Chicago and we'll

(31:32):
just see what he can do with theHurricanes as well this year.
You know a couple of guys youtalk about, the veterans, in
this mix, a couple of guys thathave been, they've scored a
little bit lately not a lot ofgoals for the Wolves, but
they've been certainly chippingin and I think a couple of
really heart and soul guys.
You know no-transcript, ofcourse Captain Josiah Slavin and

(31:59):
Skylar Brindamore are the twoguys I'm talking about.
You know Slavin was in the USdevelopment program.
This is kind of interesting.
So he started in that programwas with Chicago Steel.
That's a pretty, you know, storied franchise, so a lot of
folks play there that end up inthe NHL.
Went to Colorado College.

(32:20):
Of course.
He had 18 goals with Rockfordin a short season in 21, 22, and
49 games.
So he's got some ability, there's no question, and he's
had a number of different cupsof coffee in the NHL during this
period.
Brenda Moore of course hestarted with Quinnipiac when
they won the championship acouple of years ago and his dad
got to see him a lot and I guessthat might have contributed to

(32:43):
him being signed by the Canesthis year.
So he's got a championshipbehind him as well.
So these are a couple ofquality guys you know, part of
the mix and, I think againadding to this whole kind of
season with the Wolves.
What are you seeing with thesetwo guys?

Speaker 2 (33:00):
Yeah, I mean, mean you touched on it.
Heart and soul is exactly whatyou're, what you're getting from
both of them.
I, you know, I was kind ofrooting for for ryan suzuki to
get that c at that.
They ended up giving to tojosiah slavin.
But again, these are that's whythese guys make the hockey
decisions in Chicago and not me,because it was absolutely the

(33:22):
right call to do so.
And you know, I just love whatSlavin brings to this team.
I love that watching him justgive it his all for his boys.
And you know he doesn't letanyone push the young kids
around.
He's always right there insomeone's face.
If you've got something to say,he's going to be coming in and

(33:42):
giving you a response prettyquick.
And Skylar Brindamore hasactually been quite a surprise
just with.
I mean you know what you'regetting with.
You know the forward checkingand the face-offs and the
defensive play, Like you know.
Okay, he's a carbon copy of hisdad, we're all aware of that.
But I, I I looked up his, youknow his numbers in charlotte.

(34:06):
He didn't have a whole lot ofoffensive flash and I was okay,
they, they weren't reallylooking for, uh, you know, a 60
point guy or anything like that, but um, I'm pretty sure he's.
He's already well past.
Yeah, he had eight points in 54games with Charlotte.
He's already up to 14, ninegoals.
You know, just a menace aroundin that and that's what you know

(34:29):
.
Chicago loves those kinds ofplayers that can go in there and
create a little bit of chaos.
So it's more than just kind ofa name signing.
Obviously he's connected to thecoach there in Carolina, but
he's actually been able to bringtangible value to this lineup

(34:51):
and isn't just kind of like anepotism baby who's just riding
the coattails of his name.
No, this guy is rolling hissleeves up and he's going to
work every night and he'sproviding this team with a huge
lift.
And I think part of the reasonof this penalty kill kind of
picking up lately has beenbecause of those two names right

(35:12):
there and the effort thatthey're bringing every night.

Speaker 1 (35:16):
Well, they're both big guys.
They check in at 6'3", 190, soit's interesting.
They're both tall guys that canbring a little bit of size into
the mix as well.
And you know, again, at theprospect showcase I thought that
Brendamore looked very, verystrong this year, you know, and
that was before he was able toget his contract deal with the

(35:37):
Hurricanes, of course.
But again, great lineage and acouple of guys that are really
going to be key as the Wolvesrun towards a playoff spot this
year.
So we'll keep an eye on Josiahand Skyler for sure.
Now you mentioned SpirosAnastas.

(35:59):
Now, I know you did a big piecewith him recently.
I wanted to touch base with youon that as well, andrew.
Anything come out of thatdiscussion that was particularly
interesting for you.
Are you kidding me?

Speaker 2 (36:14):
It was incredible.
I normally have these chatswith players where I'm situated
at.
I don't kind of have the luxuryof seeing them post-game so
much, so I have to have someconversation with them over the
phone after practice, andusually the talks last six or

(36:37):
seven minutes.
I was on the phone with Coachanastas for almost a half hour
and we talked about everythingfrom, uh, you know, his coaching
experience with, um, some kindof not quite so such big hockey
powers like south korea andserbia and estonia.

Speaker 1 (37:02):
Yes, exactly, and the university of lethbridge
exactly so.

Speaker 2 (37:08):
Um, you know, getting the to dive into, you know, the
subdivisions of the um iihf wegot to talk about.
I mean, obviously scott morrowwas a big topic of conversation
but just building, rebuildingthat, that culture in Chicago
and and kind of tuning the, theoff the ice noise that you know

(37:30):
was coming in with with bothsides, and just focusing on how
to get these guys playing wellon the ice.
We even talked about, you know, both of us coming from
Mediterranean backgrounds andour favorite foods and family
traditions.

Speaker 1 (37:45):
That's the most important stuff, exactly.

Speaker 2 (37:48):
It was such a.
It was such a great humanconversation and my biggest
takeaway from the whole thing isthat you know, you can just
feel the contagious passion fromthis guy and how much he cares
about his players as humansfirst, and then his hockey
players afterwards.
It's very reminiscent of RyanWorsoski's approach in Chicago

(38:13):
when I first joined on the beat, and if anyone isn't familiar
with Warzy two Calder Cups tohis name he's beginning a great
career in the NHL, his firstseason as the bench boss in San
Jose, and you know, if CoachAnastas and Coach Abbott are,

(38:34):
you know, kind of building thatsame kind of culture, I think
they have just the same kind offuture ahead of them as well.
So it's, it was, it was anawesome conversation.
I mean just an incredible guy, incredible dude, and you know, I
, I, I, I, I.
It makes me even more excitedto see.
You know what the, the, thisblue line is, is capable of

(39:03):
going forward knowing that theyhave.

Speaker 1 (39:03):
you know they're in good hands for sure.
Well, and you know, youmentioned the blue line, and
there's three guys that we'refollowing extremely closely, of
course, and that's Scott Morrow, dominic Pensori and Charles
Alexis Legault.
I think all three of those guyshave all the potential in the
world to make the NHL at somepoint.
So this is exciting thatthey've got a guy like Spiros

(39:23):
that's really kind of runningwith it, and obviously head
coach Cam Abbott also involved, and he seems like he's doing a
great job as well.
So that's great.
I'm glad you had a chance totalk with him, and thanks for
that update as well, andrew.
Okay, any thoughts before wewrap up?

Speaker 2 (39:43):
I just want to give a shout out to a piece of the
team who, again, is a littlemore on Harold and a lot of fans
in Carolina probably don't knowabout this guy.
Uh, yannick turcotte was atryout coming from the east

(40:04):
coast hockey league and I thinkreally kind of made a name for
himself in that manitoba game atthe beginning of the season
where he, um, he was given twoseparate game misconducts by the
end of it but, um, it's just anabsolute force with with his
fists and with his, uh, with hisphysicality kind of.

(40:27):
I mean, we always talk about, you know, fighting in this game
and whether it has a place ornot, I don't know if you turn
tune into that four nations gamebetween between the US and the
US.
Yes, two fights in the firstnine seconds and you know at
this level, this guy, heparlayed a tryout into a

(40:49):
contract with the Wolves for therest of the season and I mean
you can just tell how much thecoaching staff, the fans, love
him.
I mean between Kyle Marino inseasons past and Turcotte this
year, the fans in Chicago alwaysgo crazy for their big
bodyguards on the ice.
You know I love telling thesestories of these guys that you

(41:13):
know they break through, theycatch their break.
You know it becomes somethingeven better for them that ends
up kind of changing their careerand changing their lives.
I just wanted to give a shoutout to him and for for any fans
that think you know the enforcerrole is dead or gone, you don't
have to look any further inChicago to find it that it's

(41:34):
very much alive in this, in thegame today.

Speaker 1 (41:37):
Well, yeah, interesting story.
And he had been in the ECHL foreight years and I think was
actually thinking that he wasgoing to hang him up because he
felt like maybe this was goingto be too late for him.
And I know what he's beensaying basically is look, I'm
going to do whatever I can tohelp make a difference with this

(41:58):
hockey club and whatevertalents I have, I'm going to
bring them to the table.
So I think, uh, I think it's agreat story and you're
absolutely right, andrew, theseguys, boy, it's wonderful when
they uh, when they do get achance to uh to move up and and
contribute in a way that theycan.
So this is a great story and,uh, we'll follow uh turcotte as

(42:18):
as the season goes on, for sure.
Anything else on your mind?

Speaker 2 (42:24):
Some wins hopefully Between Grand Rapids and Chicago
.
It's starting to get a littleblue over in the beach, yeah.

Speaker 1 (42:35):
I get it.
I get it.
