Why do we need sensitivity readers? What do they do? Sensitivity readers give feedback on your writing from a perspective—usually a different one than your own—to help you discover hidden biases that have found there way into your writing. They don’t change your writing, they just give guidance and let you decide what should be kept and what should be changed. When at the top of their game a sensitivity reader looks to help you bring a (mostly) authentic representation from the point of view that you may miss. I say mostly, because they also sometimes want to avoid the authentic in histories fraught with cultural divisiveness or trauma, pointing out those concerns so you, as the writer, can better understand what your words carry to the eyes, ears and minds of others. As Joanna Castle Miller stated: “A sensitivity reader isn’t a final pass or fail on your writing.
