"Straight Words With Naba'a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy, and James G. Muhammad" made an historic move away from a Black radio station, frankly, after problems that weren't able to be resolved. We moved fully into the digital space. We hosted our 3 hour program inX/Twitter Spaces, which will be our new home. (We'll talk about the station departure later, Ok?)
Our May 20 debut on X/Twitter Spaces, live 9pm to Midnight Central, was a little raw for us rookies. But activist MiDian Shofner joined to talk about what has happened nationally since the killing of George Floyd. On May 25, 2020, George repeatedly pleaded, "I can't breathe." He was mocked by Derek Chauvin and other cops on the scene. Chauvin kneeled on George's neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. In his final breaths he pleaded for his late mother. A young Black girl recorded the heinous act. Her video went viral globally.
It sparked worldwide demonstrations. Thousands turned out for U.S. protests. A wide expanse of America society pledged police reform and to bring greater justice and opportunity to Black America. What happened?
Almost all of the promises, the talk, the politics and programs are gone. Sister MiDian talked about what happened and we discussed serious questions: Why happened to "allies" and"allyship?" What did the money—grants, donations and other financial support—really do? Did it build the movement? What are the real solutions to the problem? What about reparations? Target and other boycotts over DEI? What should a win look like? What about self-determination? Separation?
The Colorado-based activist talked about the killing of Jalin Seabron, 23, in Highland Ranch, Colo., by a White deputy who was not charged with a crime. Jalin was in an arcade bar when an altercation erupted and he rushed to get his family and pregnant girlfriend out of danger.
In the open carry state, Jalin was standing next to his girlfriend with a legal weapon at his side Feb. 8 when the deputy responding to reports of gunshots walked up to Jalin with a high powered rifle and shot and killed him, said Sister MiDian. After his death, investigatorsconfirmed Jalin had not fired his weapon, but the county prosecutor said the shooting was lawful. Sister MiDian shared Jalin and his family's ongoing fight for justice.
We closed by paying tribute to the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan and Nation of Islam First Lady Khadijah Farrakhan, who were honored with a beautiful May 11 dinner at Salaam restaurant in Chicago.
“In a sacred celebration filled with purpose and prayer, family and friends of the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan—including iconic Chicago families, community leaders, Nation of Islam laborers, and extended family—gathered at Salaam Restaurant to celebrate his 92nd birth anniversary and honor the unwavering strength and grace of his wife, Mother Khadijah Farrakhan, on the occasion of Mother’s Day,” reported Toure Muhammad, writer for The Final Call. Doug E. Fresh performed. The Minister offered some verses from a Caribbean song.
The Farrakhan’s daughters—Maria, Khallada, Fatima, Betsy Jean—and Mustapha Farrakhan, the Student Supreme Captain of the Nation of Islam, offered moving tributes to their parents.
