"Straight Words With Naba'a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy, and James G. Muhammad" continued its move into the digital space May 27 with our discussion, "Straight Words: “Cops, Black Women & Abuse: Not Even Cadets Are Safe" on X/Twitter Spaces. We are live Tuesday nights, 9pm to Midnight Central, on X/Twitter Spaces.

We started out focusing on a Pro Publica story about Alexis Byrd Maxey, who suffered sexual harassment at the Chicago Police Academy, was met with a wall of lies when she tried to report wrongdoing and was fired from the academy.

We expanded that discussion into the abuses heaped on Black female officers and cadets, Black women in general, Black families and our community, the current climate and where things are headed.

The outlook? We are at war, right now!

Our guests:

Cariol Horne, a Black officer who was assaulted and fired from the Buffalo, N.Y., police force for stopping a White officer from choking a handcuffed Black man in 2006. Her pension was taken and eventually restored but she still works for justice and is still targeted by Buffalo PD.

Rev. Corine Mack, who leads the NAACP Chapter in Charlotte, N.C., and a longtime and fearless fighter for our people for justice and progress.

Beatrice X and Uncle Bobby (Cephus X Johnson) of the Love Not Blood Campaign, https://lovenotbloodcampaign.com, who have have served hundreds of families dealing with police violence and its impact, advocating for, lobbying for, and writing legislation to hold cops accountable, and helping families fight for justice.

We heard the powerful story of Sister Cariol, her heroism, and why many say: George Floyd--who died at the hands of Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin in 2020 as fellow cops watched the murder take place and did not intervene--needed a Cariol Horne. We heard how the community backed her, and her continued targeting by Buffalo PD, which has a long history of abusing Black women, men and children.

There was a call to abolish prisons, take money away from police department for services, shrinking the police role, changing laws that punish homelessness and failure to meet needs of people in mental distress.

There were also calls for Black folks to get back to "community love" and policing and protecting ourselves, increased organizing and recognizing that we are under siege now and need to respond, and the argument that we block out pain instead of dealing with it and using it as fuel for action. Plus other incredible points of discussion, including the lack of protection for Black women.

“Straight Words With Naba’a Richard Muhammad, Bj Murphy and James G. Muhammad” on X/Twitter Spaces is live Tuesdays, 9pm to Midnight Central.
