Unknown (00:00):
So are you just going
along with all this, or are you
(00:03):
not totally understanding what'shappening because your brain
isn't quite there? Yeah, there'sa lot of questions.
Oh, I'm sorry, did I break yourconcentration?
Somewhere between science andsuperstition,
(00:27):
such sites to show you, strange eons. Welcome to
strangeeons radio. That is Ericover there. Hello, that is
Vanessa over there. Hello, and Iam Kelly gang. Remember a couple
weeks ago when I said, Oh, what, what horror could this certified
(00:49):
mail possibly be bringing to me?
And you were like, Oh, nothing, rent increase. And not, not a
small rent increase. Oh no. Justlike, wow. Why?
Because everything costs money.
And, you know, I live in alittle town here in Washington,
(01:10):
and the rent here in this littletown very comparable to Seattle
now, which doesn't seem to makesense, doesn't make any sense at
all. Yeah. So like, you know Bothell rent there is
less really. I'm like, what doesthe shitty town of Everett have
to offer that you would becharging this much money? I'm
(01:34):
Yeah, I was pretty confusedabout that. Because when I lived
in Kirkland, the reason why Iwas renting there is because it
was cheaper than Seattle. And Iwas like, Yeah, but, like, a lot
cheaper. I was like, How can Iafford to basically live in a
rental townhouse for so cheap?
But I think because the housesare so expensive, maybe people
(01:55):
don't think to rent there. I'mnot sure such. It seems like a
way to because Bellevue is rentis insane, yeah, yeah. But I
think people just don't thinkabout it, because they're like,
oh, Kirkland's going to beexpensive, of course. And I was
like, I found it pretty, prettydecent. And so,
well, yeah, so that's what I getfor going and getting that
(02:18):
fucking piece of mail. Becauseotherwise I would have just been
like, I didn't see it. So I'mnot paying it.
I'm so sorry. Be fine if ithadn't been a very slow work
year so far. So that that adds alittle bit of stress. But what
are you going to do?
Move right? Yes.
(02:40):
Hey, if you go to Amazon rightnow you want to help a brother
up.
Besides that, I have seen somestuff. Oh, I'm kind of on an
animation kick, you guys. Sounlike it really is, this one
came as a big surprise to me. Itis on max and it is called
(03:00):
common side effects. I've seenthe ads for this before, some
stuff. So it looks fun. It isfun. But the the weirdest thing
about it is it should be liveaction,
because the the animation it'sdone by uh, who does uh king of
the hill and Davis and butt headand
(03:22):
office space guy, yeah. So it'skind of, you know,
B level animation, Mike Judge,Mike Judge, yeah, but great
voice acting. But all of thestuff that the characters do is
very,I don't know how to say it. It
seems very realistic movementsand weird kind of little
(03:48):
personality quirks that thesepeople have. So what this is is
about a girl who works for agigantic pharmaceutical
Corporation, and she bumps intoan old friend of hers who's kind
on the fringe now, and he hasdiscovered this mushroom that
cures death, basically, Oh, God.
And she is trying to get him tolet her take it to her company,
(04:14):
sure. And he's like, I'm notletting big pharma have a hold
of this. They'll bury it. So nowthe there's all of these,
there's CIA agents that aretrying to kill him, and all of
this stuff going on. And it's areally fun, neat thing where the
characters are quirky. It feelslike it should be a David Lynch
(04:36):
series, because you're followingthese two agents who are kind of
goofy and silly but still prettygood at their job. And I'm just
like, I want to see the liveaction versions of these people
doing the things they're doingin this so it's weird. It is
very strange. You'll have towatch it. Let me know if you
(04:56):
feel the same way about it. It'sjust a it's a.
Idea, obviously, that is closeto my heart, because I think
pharmaceutical companies havebeen screwing us forever, and
it's just really, really good.
Yeah, it looks really good. Thetrailer I've seen looks like,
Yeah, Mike Judge is alwaysdeeper than he seems. You know
(05:21):
what? I mean, some of his stuffis there's a lot more going on.
It's just the surface level. Imean, I know a lot of people who
really connected with the fatherson relationship in King of the
Hill. And I was kind of like,Oh, that's not for me. But some
people I ever like, you know, Icried at the last episode, okay,
(05:44):
I didn't, I didn't watch iteither, but, I mean, I've seen
episodes, yeah? But yeah, ithas, yeah. I hear a lot of
people reference, Oh, I'm such aone of those characters from
that show, right? Okay, right?
His strength is the humanity inhis cartoon characters. It's
(06:04):
called common side effects, andit is on max Awesome. Well, I've
been trying to catch up onseverance, and I'm sure by the
time this comes out, I will beat least one behind. But
fuck man, the show is so goddamn good. I don't want it to
end for another, however longit'll end for I just, I so
(06:26):
confusing, but great. I'm sureyou guys probably saw at least
the first episode where you justget to watch the lead guy just
run, yeah, really quickly inlike, Slippy, you know, office
shoes. That was one of thoseones. I was like, how did they
do this? Is this? Becausethere's a ceiling above him,
(06:49):
yeah. Like, so there's not acrane of the camera here going
this. And it can't be a guyrunning, because he'd have to be
running backwards to keep him inframe so perfectly. So I heard
an interview with the guy, andhe was, I can't remember the
actor's name now, but he wastalking about him and Ben
Stiller doing this shot, and hesaid it was the hardest shot of
the whole season. It took them, like, weeks to get it, and at
(07:12):
the end, they had their own rapparty for the running scene.
Wow, yeah, it is, yeah, Eric, you still haven't seen that,
right? It is one of those thingswhere you know, if you're
familiar with making a film, belike, fuck, is this a drone in
front of him?
Yeah, I'm curious. I bet there'sa way to find out. But yeah, I
was just watching them goingthose shoes look not possible to
(07:35):
run that quickly in just, Idon't know how he would do it,
but yeah, I have definitely, Ithink we talked about this
before, as every question getsanswered, like three more
appear. So we're at a point nowwhere a big question was kind of
answered, or a big eventhappened, but now the next
(07:57):
episode where they are going ona field trip, right? Has not
answered the cliffhanger of theprevious one, and, in fact, it
only brings up a lot morequestions. So yeah, that last
episode. I mean, in the first 10minutes, I'm like, Huh, okay, I
(08:20):
wonder where we're going withthis, but it's the entire
episode. And I was like, what ishappening in this show? Is it
the same cliff from Castle Rock?
Oh, I don't know. Okay, sorry. Iwas just like, this cliff is
very familiar. I've been herebefore. Lady says it's like the
highest waterfall in the world, about 25 feet high.
(08:44):
I love that. I love that theyjust don't know. Or, like, one
of the guys was like, wow, thestars. I always wondered what
like space looked like. Like, OhGod, you forget that these guys
have their innies have neverseen, yeah, so crazy. It's just
a mind fuck of a show, Yeah, completely, completely a mind
(09:06):
fuck. And near the end of thelatest episode, there's a big
thing that happens. And Ihonestly, just because my head
wasn't in that space, I waslike, why is this a big fucking
deal that like, yeah. And thenI'm like, oh, oh, okay, you're
okay. I guess that's, I guessthat is a big deal. I don't want
to spoil anything. I'm sorry.
Like, I said you could saywhatever you want to be
(09:28):
like, there's like, oh well,Eric, this is a show that you're
gonna benefit wildly fromwatching, being able to watch.
Yeah? Because this lastcliffhanger, I was like, God
damn it. I just want to knowwhat the fuck happens next?
Yeah, yeah. I know it's so hardto wait. This is one of the
harder shows to sit for a weekon your hands and be like,
(09:51):
I fucking I need the next one.
Mr. Stiller, turns out you'regood at something else. I can't
handle this. That's pretty good.
Director, he's done a lot ofgood, yeah, actually, yeah. I
didn't even realize. I had noidea that he was had gone down
this path because he's, he playssuch a type in most of his
movies. Yeah, and his directingnecessarily, doesn't necessarily
(10:14):
match what you would expect thatperson to that is called
severance. It's on Apple, plusone quick Ben Stiller thing he
did in London, a a one man showof The Shining. And I was like,
will you fucking bring this overhere? Please? Whoa, damn. That
would be cool. Yeah, soundsincredible. Is he just like, sit
(10:35):
in a chair being like, I thinkhe's right in front of him and
stuff like that.
I can only imagine. What's thatFathom Events or something. Oh
yeah, yeah, that'd be worth it.
Adam Scott is the name of theactress, all right. It was
totally killing me. Also, helooks so hideous in the show.
And I'm like, Adam Scott, Iremember being fairly attractive
(10:57):
in Parks and Rec. Oh, yeah. Andthen luckily, I was like, man,
what happened to him? Like itlooks so he looks so weird. And
then I saw him on thatinterview, and I was like, oh,
okay, you do look all right.
There's like a middle area, oh,because I was thinking, Boy, age
has caught up with him ratherquickly. Looks rough. I think
(11:19):
it's the lenses, because hereally doesn't look that bad.
Okay, yeah, because I was like, that bad, sir, and sometimes he
looks better in his outie thanin his innie, or vice versa.
There's one of which he looksworse in for the lenses than the
other. But I was like, is doinghim no favors? It's true. And he
(11:40):
just looks like he got like, plastic surgery or something,
like if something went wrong, but like, his tail mouth is too
strong.
Listen, we have no problemmaking fun of how people look on
the show. Look. I have an issue.
It is my issue. I alwayssome people I find not pleasant
to look at, and that's on me.
I'm also in love with hisacting. He's incredible,
(12:02):
incredibly. This is all on me.
Well, so one I think Kellymentioned a long time ago, but
as thedeep seated lover of sports
movies, watched the winningseason, yeah, which is a
they brought, brought SamRockwell. Sam Rockwell movie,
(12:24):
yeah, and, uh, Emma Roberts, they're very young. Emma
Roberts, this was shot a longtime. It's like, 2009
Yeah, I don't think I havementioned this. I just mentioned
it to you and said, Hey, I justsaw a movie that I think you'd
like. It's pretty good. It has,uh, you know, the last episode,
I talked a little bit about, Ilike movies where it's like, you
(12:44):
want a redemption little early.
Yeah, I wanted that for him too, because Sam Rockwell, even being
an asshole is so likable. Yeah, you know, he pushes the border
at times on this where he kindof like, okay, dude, but he
pulls it off and it's so good, and the team goes through the
redemption for him, right? Soit's a it's, it's pretty damn
(13:09):
good. It is really solid, with anice, simple story of, you know,
the down on his luck, guy who'sgot a friend who offers him a
job to coach the woman's or thegirls basketball team at a high
school. Yeah? And he shows up,and there's like, six of them,
one of them's injured oncrutches. There's like, Huh?
(13:33):
And he actually started offsofter and nicer than I thought
he was going to be, yeah, andthen quickly, kind of becomes a
dick again, but, well, he's analcoholic, so that plays heavily
into his attitude towards thejob and the girls and all that,
yeah, and his daughter, therough relationship he has with
her, yeah, and which playsreally well in the film. I
(13:54):
thought really was well done, because a lot of times
and divorce movies characters,it seems forced. It's like you
have to hate your father becausehe's whatever. He blew it out of
the park to make sure a reasonthe daughter was pissed at him.
Yeah, and it was really good, and it sustained as long as it
(14:15):
needed to. And it's really, Idon't know, it's really well
written, fun film to watch ifyou like sports movies, and
definitely awhen you say if you like sports
movies, there's the caveat, because this is an indie film,
and the girls really aren't thatgood at basketball, so the
sports scenes are few and farbetween, right? They don't see
an actual game. There's afew there's a few moments now
(14:40):
that now the sports what I loveabout sports movies is that
redemption thing that comingover the top, kind of thing that
you don't expect, like Yeah, andmost of the girls don't like
each other. When they start, really don't Yeah, and pretty
soon they become a team. Andthat's all the stuff that you
need in those kind of movies.
I'm glad you liked it. I'm gladyou watched.
Interested. Man, Eric, that'ssomething I really appreciate
(15:02):
about you. Like, I will not Myeyes never go towards sport
films, nor music films like and, man, I love the recommendations.
Yeah, it's really helpful. Itopens my,
I don't know, it opens me up tocool, interesting content. So
thank you for that, but it'sinteresting too. Two of my
favorite kind of sports moviesare not my favorite sports. I
(15:24):
love hockey and boxing movies.
Yeah, boxing movies are so muchmore entertaining than boxing
for real and hockey. I justdon't know well enough to watch
it on TV. I do want to go see itlive, but watch on TV, it's
like,I get the idea you're trying to
get the puck in the neck. I getall that, but the subtleties of
what I know goes on at baseballand football, I have no idea
what the hell's going on inhockey. That's definitely how I
(15:46):
feel about literally every sportI'm like. I don't care for this
in real life, but this is great.
I will watch a basketball orfootball or whatever.
Yeah, if it's well done. Yeah? Imean this. The secret is that
you don't want to make a movieabout the sport. You want to
(16:06):
make a movie about the people, exactly in this board, and
everyone loves an underdog. Isee Hoosiers the Mighty Ducks.
Yeah, Hoosiers. Nextmovie I'm going to talk about, I
think I've told you guys aboutin person. It is a documentary
on Paramount plus called CasaBonita mil more I have seen,
(16:29):
okay. This is a documentaryabout the guys from South Park
who had decided to purchasesealed Casa bonito Bonita
restaurant in Colorado. Oh, anddid you not realize it was based
on a real restaurant? I had noidea.
(16:50):
Apparently, it is a hugelandmark in Colorado, and
there's another one somewhereelse, but they,
the people who owned it, weregoing bankrupt, and they
thought, You know what, we'regonna buy this place and fix it
up. And it just turns into amoney pit. They don't realize
what they've done. And, youknow, they, they go into it with
(17:11):
a $6 million budget, and then atthe end, you can see that it is
exponentially more money thanthat. And they, they just
document the entire thing ofthem tearing down walls and
finding out the plumbing issuesand the electrical issues and
all of this stuff, but it's donewith
with such love for the originalbuilding and for the the two
(17:35):
guys, Matt and Trey, trying todo this thing, and it was really
kind of eye opening to see theirrelationship with each other and
who they are like in theirproduction company, because one
of them is definitely thecreative guy and the other one
is definitely the money guy,yeah,
like that one movie they did, like eight, eight days, or that
(17:55):
one where they talk about makingan episode, wow, okay, you're
doing all that kind of work.
Yeah, he's doing all that kindof work. But yeah, and obviously
a great team, because they seemlike they're very close friends
still, after 30 years of beingin the same room with each other
constantly,I thought that was really
interesting. It's a hugerestaurant. It's sort of like, I
was like, what? Yes, I want togo to this exactly like cartoon.
(18:19):
There's like a waterfall.
It's all there. They did notinvent anything that show.
It's kind of like, if you'venever seen the if you've ever
seen, like a last what, theRainforest Cafe, yeah, but, but,
like, two floors of it, and hugeand animatronics and various
(18:44):
characters were running out.
It's kind of like a amped upChuck E Cheese or something, but
with Mexican food, and theypoint out the food is not very
good, so they're going to changethat aspect of the restaurant.
And they just, you know, theyknock it out of the park. It is
a very happy ending at the end,but they are.
(19:05):
They have spent a lot of moneyto make it a much better place.
And, and they like, you know, who knows if we'll ever make
this money back? Yeah, it lostleader, kind of restaurant form,
I think, because, I mean, aslong as they're making South
Park, they're going to have themoney to, you know? Well, I was
like, can you imagine havingenough money to do what they
(19:26):
did? Because they spent, I mean, the final tally is like, $36
million to bring this placeback.
And I, I was just like, Wow. Canyou imagine making that much
money on your little filthycartoon,
do something like this. Butthen, you know, by the time they
(19:47):
open it, they've got like, 300people standing in line. And
they said something like 300,000people have gone through the
doors since they reopened andall this stuff. I was like,
Okay, I hope these guys aremaking a shit ton of money. It's
like.
Kind of thing, you know, youalmost want to travel to ever in
that area, yeah, as long as youdidn't want to say anything
(20:08):
publicly, like, you know, mydestination vacation this year
is in Colorado, and it is thisrestaurant that it's not a ski
resort, but just as a feel goodtype of movie, it is really,
really pleasant. I'm so glad tohear that, because I've been so
hesitant to watch things likethat after watching welcome
direct sim, which I'm not fullycaught up on, because I was too
(20:29):
depressed, yeah, to keepwatching it, because I'm like,
watching you guys struggle tomake money to throw at this team
that is just not making it, andtherefore not getting anything
out of your investment. And theteam, like, the town hates you,
like, this is a lot. This isemotionally too much. Yeah, I
mean, it is a real credit toRyan Reynolds and
(20:50):
the guy from Rob McCann Mick. L,yeah, you got
it. Michael MC E, L, H, E, N, N,E, y, McCollum, kneel,
whatever they're so,yeah, Ryan and Rudd, they're so
likable, and even when they'refrustrated, that you're, you
(21:13):
know, you're kind of with themon Everything, and you're,
you're with them, you know, like groaning when the
team is doing stuff, it's like, come on you guys, you've got a
chance. You got a chance. Yougot to fucking step up to the
plate for these guys. So, yeah, that's a good show, too. What
was it called? Welcome toWrexham. Yeah. Welcome to
(21:35):
Wrexham on Hulu, yeah. So Ichecked out transformers one,
okay, which I was reallyhesitant about, because when I
saw the trailers in theater, Iwas like, this, it's the
animated transformers, kind ofCGI looking the show where it's
like a prequel. And I was like,Yeah, Megatron and Optimus
(21:57):
friends, yeah, their buddy, yeah, their buddies working in
like a mine.
Sure I needed this movie. Youtell me?
Really good.
It's actually super great. It'sgot Scarlett. Johansson is
voicing, I never remember thefemale transformers name, but
(22:19):
Micah is yelling out, I know Iknow it. I'm so aware. But, and
he was like, This movie's Great.
This movie is great. And I waslike, it there's no way this
movie is good. But I was like, Ihave nothing else to do, and it
is now free, so I will watch it.
And it was, it was actually sointeresting and fun and well
(22:39):
written and like, you're reallyrooting for the characters. And
you can see the turn with,oh my God, what's the guy? The
bad one? Megatron. Megatron. Youcan see megatrons turn. They
don't have those names either, because they kind of develop
those names I see through thefilm. But yeah, and you're like,
how the fuck are you gonnabecome optimist prime, and they
(23:00):
do, like, really earn it. And Ithought the animation would bug
the hell out of me, but you, youkind of forget about it pretty
quick. You get sort of suckedin. So, yeah, it was neat. What
is that on that I believe is onparamount, and it's called
transformers one, and the one isspelled out right? Yeah. So,
(23:20):
okay, yeah, so it's not thefirst Transformers movie, no,
but we already know who OptimusPrime is there for a little
while, at least. Yeah, yep, freeon, nope, nope. Sorry, I must
have paid money for it. Sorry, guys, but it's not, not as
expensive as it was, like a $5 rental. So, yeah, by
(23:40):
all means, I finally caught upon one of our show's favorites,
the Harley Quinn. I am so behindon that. Yeah, heavy episode.
Here.
There you go. That last Have youseen? Are you caught up? I am
that last episode was a littleweird, but still good,
(24:02):
yeah? Like, unexpected. But theshows these folks put together,
it's always still, yeah, good.
Plus there's, I mean, they'reable to throw in just like
creature commandos did. They'reable to throw in like, little,
tiny easter eggs that are sofun, you know, like, I don't
know if you looked at the planetnames that he was going by real
(24:23):
quick, yeah, I was like, oh,okay, those are names from other
characters and stuff like that.
Andthe reveal of his monkey towards
the end, this took a dark turn the
way it was going. I wasexpecting something like that,
but not done like that. So, oh,wow, you tell me, because I, I
(24:46):
really am not a huge Supermanfan. Was that brainiacs thing
with the I know he had bottledthe city of Kandor? Was that his
thing? He was bottling cities. Idon't remember him doing that,
but again, I.
Also didn't read a lot ofSuperman,
but I did like his shiprepresentation. Yeah, that was
(25:07):
fun, the skull ship. So, butyeah, I, I don't, well, I don't
remember any of the family stuffin any Brainiac story. I think,
though, no, I think that wasprobably added in, yeah, and it
wasweird it's well done. Yeah, it
was. It's such a fun show. Yeah,it's hard to go wrong. No matter
what they're doing, theycontinue to be high quality. The
(25:27):
move to Metro Metropolis hasbeen fun. Yeah, the this, the
episode with the shark kids, wasgod damn insane,
like a season behind too. Soyeah, some good stuff to be
watching here.
(25:48):
Plot The kid in front of that. Ihad some new words.
I did it once, and I was like,Ooh, the
shark. One could be good, because it's all about
babysitting. I Okay,yeah, I think I'm at the point
where she's the shark is stillpregnant, like he's still
catering. I just saw the onewhere they go to like a bad guy
(26:09):
resort. Oh yeah, yeah. So I'm,I'm, I'm a ways behind. I'll
catch up due for a re watch onthe whole series. That show
kills me. Yeah, it's, it'sgreat, yeah.
Talk about that weird. You know,we don't like the James Gunn
inclusion in the creatureCommandos, yeah, and then he's
(26:31):
actually a character in HarleyQuinn, oh, we know. But it's
funny because they sort of, theyfun of him. It doesn't feel so
grandiose. It feels more like,Haha, fucking DC, yeah, yeah. I
think James Gunn probably has alot of that in him. Yeah. I hope
so. Yeah. Recognize he's acharacter to be made fun of at
times, for sure. I mean, he didlike, tromeo and Julie got sick,
(26:55):
so the guy's done some weirdshit. If he starts referring to
it as the gun averse, I'm gonnabe like,
I can't, can't do it. Yeah. Whydon't we take a little break
guys and continue to complainabout James Gunn, and then when
we come back, we are talkingabout historical I don't know if
you guys chose horror filmseven, nope. Oh, okay, okay.
(27:16):
We're talking about historicalfilms.
Was this supposed to be worthintroducing the GI Joe space O
Matic.
Space O Matic, the futuristicspace vehicle you program
(27:38):
yourself to make it go where youwant, do what you want,
program it to liftor to scoop or use the magnetic
pickup. Watch this.
GI Joe space Matic from Hasbro.
Youand we have returned, guys, this
(28:09):
was my sub topic. It wassupposed to be just historic. I
don't know what I'll call this.
It's a movie made in present daythat set in some time in the
past. So excellent. Sounds good?
Yeah, I hope it wasn't then tobe on real events, because if
someone trouble, well, I wouldbe also, because I chose from
(28:30):
2004 a movie called ginger snapsback the beginning.
Indians say the curse began inthe time of the Ancients,
legends of the day of reckoning, when death would consume the
land.
So where is everyone? The tradeparty was supposed to return
(28:52):
with supplies two months ago.
The hell's going on? Murph, they're all dead. We're turned
into these sieging monsters.
There's one inside get rippedthrough the wall.
Hello, yougot bit last night. Your sin
(29:15):
brought the devil opponent withsome kind of animal. I don't it
was deformed.
They're everywhere. Let themcome.
You're gonna kill my sister.
That's too late. She's turningI'm turning into something
(29:35):
I have to kill. I it.
Yes, this is the prequel movieto the movie ginger snaps. I.
(30:00):
I have no idea why, because Idid. We need those directed by
Grant Harvey, who has 45credits, mostly television,
including 13 episodes ofWhistler, 11 episodes of the way
home and 19 episodes ofHeartland. Written by Christina
Ray, who has 18 credits. Also TVepisodes of the Pinkertons, the
collector and Murdoch Mysteries, and also written by Steph
(30:24):
masacot, who has seven credits, including the dark how we ended
us, and two episodes of heritagemurders. These are all like
Canadian productions, becausethis is a Canadian production
starring Catherine Isabelle, 137credits, all sorts of movies and
series, nine episodes ofHannibal, 10 episodes of being
human, 15 episodes of littledog, 19 episodes of The Order,
(30:46):
13 episodes of end game and eventwo episodes of supernatural.
Notice how to pick them.
Also starting Emily Perkins, whohas 37 credits, mostly TV, 35
episodes of Da Vinci's inquest,26 episodes of hiccups and four
episodes of supernaturalherself. Also in this movie is
(31:10):
JR, born Nathaniel Arcand andHugh Dylan. Have you guys seen
ginger snaps back? Yes, no, I'veonly seen the first
one. This film starts with anopening crawl talking about the
northern Legion Trading Company, stating that each spring, a
party from the fort traveled toHudson Bay to trade pelts for
winter provisions, but in 1815the party never returned.
(31:35):
So this is a prequel to theoriginal ginger snaps. But I
don't really know why, becausethe two actors from the original
film play sisters here again, but there seems to be no
relation to the sisters in theoriginal movie. Oh so. And it
wouldn't matter, because thecurse is not passed down through
(31:57):
your bloodline. I still have alot of questions. I guess what
they're trying to say is that awild coincidence. Is this, this
happened to the same familyyears apart, or a different
family? Sure, they've got it allfigured out. They're named the
same in this movie, Bridget andginger. Wow, lost. Or maybe it's
Bridget, I don't know. They'relost with their horse in the
(32:20):
rugged Canadian wilderness. Whenthey come across a seemingly
abandoned camp that bears signsof a violent attack, they then
notice an elderly Indian womanwho tells them that she too, had
a sister once, and gives gingerand Bridget each a necklace with
a bird skull that belonged toher and her sister. The woman
speaks of them as the red andthe black and warns that unless
(32:41):
they kill the boy, one sisterwill kill the other. You guys,
this acting is so fucking bad.
Nearly turned the movie off, butI stuck with it for you, for
you. The listener,Wowser Bridget and ginger come
across an Indian hunter wholeads them to Fort Bailey where
they can find refuge. What theydon't know is that the fort has
(33:02):
been under siege by werewolvesfor some time. That's right,
this movie just drops thatlittle nugget in right fort's
doctor and flies a leech toBridget, surreptitiously testing
to see if she's a werewolf.
That night, Ginger is bit by ayoung deformed man in the fort,
(33:23):
and when the girls startscreaming, the fort is suddenly
attacked by werewolves. Thesisters are led by a reverend to
an allegedly safe building, which actually contains a
werewolf.
The Sisters run up the stairsbeing chased by the werewolf,
but the Indian Hunter appearsand kills it as ginger and
Bridget are going to their room.
Ginger's nose starts to bleed, asure sign that she is infected,
(33:44):
or perhaps she was struck in theface. You decide,
the sisters discover the boy whobit ginger is the son of one of
the fort's leaders, and everyonehad thought he was dead.
Ginger is determined to kill theboy, to lift the curse, which
makes no sense in the history ofthis series of movies. And that
(34:08):
doesn't work anyway, and nowBridget and ginger are on the
run from all of these men. WillBridget kill her sister? Or will
she kill the boy, as wasforetold at the beginning of
this flick? Or will gingerinfect her own sister and unite
the sisters in blood togetherforever.
Tagline of this movie is, findthe source of your fear.
(34:31):
Feels like one kind of thing tosay.
This movie was shot back to backwith ginger snaps two unleashed,
which was the true sequel to theginger snaps storyline.
In this film, the indigenoustradition refers to the
werewolves as Wendigos. TheWendigo is a mythological
(34:54):
cannibalistic monster in thespiritual tradition of North
American Algonquian speakingtribe.
Lives. It is associated withwinter when this film is set and
described as either a fearsomebeast that stalks and eats
humans, or as a spirit thatpossesses humans, causing them
to turn into cannibals, althoughwerewolves and Wendigos are
(35:15):
traditionally different in myth, all of these aspects are
referenced in this film, whichis not horrible. It
it sucks that the main problem Ihave with ginger snaps, a nearly
perfect film, is the werewolfdesign at the end is really
stupid. And they they stick kindof with that design, with all
(35:40):
these werewolves that areattacking, and it just, it's
just a bad design. It looksdumb. But does the one sister
have a her better hair than theoriginal chitters? This is the
1860s nobody has good hair.
She had that horrible wake inthe original movie because she
cut her hair between the castingand Bucha,
(36:03):
yeah, you're at a trapperstrading post. Nobody's
anyhow. Ginger snaps back.
It's fine.
It's fine. You watch them inorder. The next movie is
significantly better.
Good point. I can't believe howmany of these are there. There's
(36:25):
three they. They decided to filmand release the prequel and the
sequel at the same time. Yeah,so you suddenly had two more
gingers that movies. One was aprequel. One is a sequel. The
sequel is worse, I think, thanthis. Wow. So I just don't think
(36:47):
I needed, need it. But that'sjust me. You don't I'm putting
five minutes on the strange eonsradio buzzer, excellent. Well, I
chose a historical film called2016 the Great Wall. You
(37:56):
I was born into battle.
I fought for greed and gods, this is the first war I've seen
worth fighting for you.
(38:20):
I don't think, yeah, you guys.
I'll jog your memory as we go.
This is a Asian Film. It is ahalf Asian Film, okay. Oh, go
ahead. You tell me a budget of150 million. Box Office of 334
(38:44):
point 9 million, but stillconsidered to be a loss directed
by 37 credits, including herohouse of flying dagger, Chris
the golden flower Raise the RedLantern, written by kind of a co
writing team, Carlo Bernard andDoug Miro, who did Narcos,
Narcos, Mexico, Sorcerer'sApprentice. And then Tony Gilroy
(39:07):
was also a writer on this. Hedid, born identity, Armageddon,
devil's advocate, and or, andthe cutting edge.
What? Oh, right. Starring MattDamon, that's right. 103
credits, Good Will HuntingMartian, departed Pedro Pascal,
73 credits, includingMandalorian, Last of Us, Game of
Thrones and prospect. Andfantastic. You say that proud
(39:32):
prospect, prospect, get it onvinegar syndrome. Now, I know
it's kind of much better thanmost of the stuff they released
by great and you know what?
There's no shame in putting onthe subs, because the audio mix
on the blu ray just didn't turnout as good as it should have.
So don't feel bad about it. It'sfine. You want to know what's
happening, but his deep tonesare well worth it. Also. Willem
de foes in this 159credits, Spider Man lighthouse,
(39:55):
while at heart we just talkedabout and the.
Only reason to watch BoondockSaints, and even then, I'd say
probably skip it.
Also, we have a Chinese cast, ahuge Chinese cast, but the two
most recognizable people andleads, Tian Jing, 28 credits,
including Police Story, lockdown, Kong, Skull Island,
(40:17):
Pacific Rim uprising and the TVseries, the glory of the Tang
Dynasty and Andy Lau 189credits, including Infernal
Affairs and hassle FlyingDaggers. So this story is there
some European men, threeEuropean men riding through the
desert being chased by a band ofMongolians. The desert is in
(40:37):
China somewhere. They outmaneuver the Mongolians and set
up camp for the night, but areattacked by something strange, a
weird, green creature that moveslightning fast. Matt Damon uses
his skills to take off its armand kill it. Then the other guy
(40:58):
is dead, so it's just him andPedro continue in the desert and
come across the Great Wall ofChina.
This is around the time of, sortof the when the Europeans were
sailing around looking forgunpowder and spice trade and
all that kind of stuff. Sowe're, I don't know exactly what
year we're in, but it's a longtime ago. So they discovered
(41:20):
this strange, Great Wall ofChina. They go ahead and
surrender, because otherwisethey will be killed. And they
discover that they're kind ofembroiled in this, the nameless
order who runs the wall. There'sseveral factions of it. Some are
like up close combat. People, some are far away. Arrow people,
(41:42):
some are dancing. Sphere people, and it's a huge war between them
and these strange green beaststhat come in hoards and are
trying to get to the capitalcity to essentially take over,
because more they eat, thestronger they are, and the queen
is super strong and will takeover the world. These are weird
(42:04):
creatures. They use likevibrations to communicate.
They're very smart. They're verystrategic. And anyway, so they
plan to get the black powder, which is what they want to take
back to Europe, but instead, start to change heart, and maybe
they will help these people intheir fight. This is a mix of a
(42:26):
buddy comedy, historical fantasyand anime level fighting and
scenery all in one. It has somepretty dodgy accents from both
Matt Damon, who might be Irish, and Pedro Pascal, who is
occasionally Spanish.
It is a super fast paced movie,so it makes it a little bit
(42:46):
difficult to follow and feelsome of those emotional impacts
that they set up. But the setsand the ideas are fucking
stellar, really cool monsterdesign, cool moments, like
there's a fight of a towerthat's filled with stained
glass. So it's like the rainbowlight is on them the whole time.
Gorgeous. They put in thesetraps along the wall, like these
(43:08):
wall blades that start spinningaround out of the walls as the
creatures are climbing up. Andit's like people rowing in a
machine inside to get themgoing.
I'm sorry, guys, I just couldnot keep this small. It has a
very strange ending, which Ithink is it's a half Chinese,
(43:30):
half American production, Ithink mostly Chinese, though,
because it's filmed in China.
The leads are big Chinese names, and the ending, I think, is very
Chinese. You don't want thewhite guy and the cool Asian
lady to maybe marry and betogether forever, so maybe for
no reason, the white guy's,like, cool, nice knowing you
(43:55):
for like, Why? Why I thoughtyou're into these people. All
right.
Overall, I loved this movie. Ithas a great cast. It's just
amazingly visual. It's reallyclever, interesting ideas, super
entertaining. The relationshipbetween Matt tayman and Pedro
Pascal is incredible.
(44:16):
Just a little bit of trivia. Iknow I'm super out of time.
Tagline, one of mankind'sgreatest wonders 1700 years to
build 5500 miles long. What werethey trying to keep out this I
didn't know how wrong I was.
Mongolians seemed like a veryminor threat in this film. I'll
(44:37):
tell you what. It's like, eightdudes on horseback. You're like,
dudes showed up again. Fuck.
This was the most expensiveChinese film ever, with a budget
of 135 million and due to thehuge amount of crew involved,
had over 100 translators. Imean, you can tell when you're
watching this film. This is notlike just CGI film, like parts
(44:59):
of the wall or.
Definitely CGI, but the actuallike actors, you can tell it's
the people, and they've costumedthem, and they're just rows and
rows and rows and hundreds ofindividuals. The filmmakers were
denied permission to film on theactual Great Wall, so locations
were added digitally. Themajority of the film was done in
China, with some scenes shot inNew Zealand. Matt Damon and his
(45:20):
family spent six months in Chinafilming. Matt Damon has stated
many times in interviews that hefelt that this film was a dud,
and he knew it a couple monthsinto shooting, that it would not
do well. There's a lot ofcontroversy around this film
when it came out, because it haswhite protagonists in East,
Eastern setting. The controversyis stupid, because I'm sorry.
(45:43):
And the director cited this thatthe Asian director cited that
this is crazy, because the rolewas never meant to be for Asian
characters. It's some bumblingAsian or bumbling European guys
who stumble across the wall.
They're not necessarily theheroes or the coolest people in
the story. They're just there tohelp, kind of fill in these
pieces. The film lost about 74point 5 million when all done
(46:05):
inside, and it received a fewnegative reviews in China. Then
in 2016 the Communist Party'sofficial media outlet, People's
Daily published an article onits website severely criticizing
the people who are detracting, saying it does harm to the
Chinese movie industry withtheir bad reviews. The reviews
were then to try retracted.
(46:30):
There you go. Yay, communism.
Yeah.
I like this movie a lot. Good.
Yeah. I have no memory of thisfilm? Oh, at all I remember
this is a stupid film. And Ipeople mix it up with The Last
Samurai because also, like whitedude in Asian setting. But no,
(46:50):
it was. I remember thinking thetime, although it looks dumb, it
is great. It's a great film, yeah. And it definitely falls
into the stuff we talk about.
It's fantasy and action and all.
Yeah, it's a heavily genre film.
So good, good choice on thatone. So how much did you say
this movie caught your moviecost? I
(47:12):
think this one cost me $100so I decided to torture myself
for once I haven't had aridiculously hard to say group
of filmmakers in a while, so I'mdoing from 1973 electrica, also
known as the She butterfly fromYugoslavia. Oh, oh,
(48:24):
whoa. Ready for some fun?
This available on prime and partof all the Hans BRS box at one,
okay, directed by yor ye codyeveck,
director of a holy place andKudo and you're damn right. I
selected the only Americantitles in his laundry list of
(48:45):
films he directed, written byhim and middle von glissiac, who
wrote something called TV teeterGlover Secura and the director
wrote most of the stuff hedirected. Mariano Nicole stars
in this she was in the fall ofrock and roll, some other woman
(49:06):
and England made me.
Peter bozovic, The Secret Lifeof Nikola Tesla. Nice
reflections and Hamlet. I don'tknow which version Slobodan
perrovic, Ward six and winteringin Jack of sled and against
(49:28):
King. So I'm sure you now knowall the people in this film. I
love to speed. So it starts offwith a couple men complaining
and talking about a gathering, which is a strong description
for most of this film.
One lives alone in a flowermill, which is sort of the
backbone of keeping food andeverything like that for this
(49:49):
particular village. And guyswonders, why do you stay here
alone? Aren't you scared? AndI'm fine. So you know what the
next scene is, him beingattacked by.
I guess it's a vampire,big wild teeth, actually,
relatively nicely realizedcreature for a film like this,
wherethere's a definite point of
(50:10):
making you notice that thiscreature is very bearded, but
also is wearing a hoodie kind ofthing. So you can't see really
see their face. So youautomatically go, oh, that's a
woman, which is kind of supposed to be
the twist in the movie. But, Imean, if you watch movies,
you'll be hereand again. Here's another note,
(50:35):
a group of men gather and talk, saying, No, this isn't a sava
savanvik, and there are novampires, which is the
Yugoslavian vampire lore, andwhich is kind of interesting.
This is a slow, moving moviethat clocks in at an amazing 60
(50:55):
minutes.
Wow, that's like, oh, I canwatch this.
The main story is a forbiddenlove between a young man who
wants her father to let himmarry his wife. It's all the
guys in the village go. He won'tlet you marry Mary. Sorry, marry
(51:17):
his daughter. Okay.
He won't let you marry hisdaughter. Let's go kidnap her.
You guys can get married. No,sure. Seven Brides for Seven
Brothers. Daddy, yeah. So shekind of seems into it. So, sure,
not necessarily a bad thing, butit's weird.
A whole lot of the movies just abunch of dudes sitting around
(51:38):
talking, this looks likea young film, countries film,
where you see a bunch of peopleand, well, we've got to tell our
story. How do you construct ascene? I don't know, you guys go
lay on the hill over there andyou just talk. There's a lot of
that. It is oddly interesting, though it is one of those. I'm
glad it's in this box set, because it in, it belongs in a
(51:59):
study like this of movies thatare unique. It's the first, I
think it's the first Yugoslavianhorror film. They also call it
the scariest Yugoslavian horrorfilm, okay?
Robert Edgars, credited as one of his films,
influenced him in the adaptationof Nosferatu, how he included it
(52:22):
in the film, in conjuringNosferatu, Robert Eggers
presents a nine film programthat he curated in New York.
So I if you're a film historian, nut moron, like I am, it is well
worth watching. If you'reinterested in an entertaining
(52:44):
evening of a unique vampirestory, you might be
disappointed.
The reaction film critics werefairly weak or fairly mixed. Lot
filmed it filmed and praised itfor being a great work of horror
and World Cinema, where othersjust said it was kind of like a
TV movie, and with the intention to upset
(53:07):
or be scary to people stilltraumatized by World War Two,
which I can kind of, I can tendto see where that was coming for
with the fear of the lack offood And a few of the other
things that are going on.
The director said he did notintend this as a horror film.
(53:29):
Never interested in horror. Hasnever
viewed it as a fancy fantasyfilm dealing with the presence
of metaphysical evil in thehuman consciousness.
So this is a tough one to talkabout. It's not bad, like Al
Adamson or some of thosefilmmakers I've talked about.
(53:50):
It's,it's a we've talked before about
heart on the sleeve film. Thisis one of those kind of films,
and as part of this, the allHans, BRS, now two box sets. I
think it's a fantasticinclusion. So if this concept
interests you, I can't recommendit high enough. If it does
interest you, gosave up and buy the separate box
(54:11):
sets, because they're bothpretty phenomenal.
So that was my film. Did the eggtimer just die? Just gave up on
life.
Did it? Yeah, it starts ticking.
It stops ticking after a littlewhile, once it's gone off. Oh,
did it continue? Yeah, wow.
(54:32):
Where are you? She was sofascinated in my glorious
description. I was completelyraptured. I was like, Oh man,
shouldn't be going off.
Holy crap. I've been talkingforever. I was trying to
visualize all the things youwere talking about. Like I said,
it's interesting as a if you'rea film historian, you love
(54:53):
watching older movies for that,or what, how, like what we did
with Japanese.
In Asian films, yeah, last year, where it's just like, let's
explore this area.
Fascinating film for that. Wow,cool. You say it's 60 minutes
long, six zero, yeah, but you were
like, it's very slow moving.
(55:17):
So yeah, the conversations ofpeople just sitting around
talking. There's two women inthe movie, the love interest and
a super old lady. So it's, it'sall guys, and there's some funny
scenes. There's, it's, it's notterrible. It's just modern
audiences are not going ifyou're going to dive into
(55:39):
foreign films, do not make thisyour first film. I
don't know if anything on thatbox that would be a good entry
level. There's some strangestuff on here. The one I talked
about with the Native Americanstory, I forgot the guy who's a
knife stitch or something likethat. I can't remember what a
(55:59):
very, very good film, butthere's, but yes, a lot of them
are like, you'd have to be, wow, ready to Yeah, and didn't you
say that that November film isin there? Yeah, it is. I just
noticed I was looking throughgoing, oh shit, yeah, after you
talked about, okay, this, thisis, I mean, obviously I can't do
it as a subject, but it'sdefinitely one I need to watch.
(56:19):
Yeah, you need to watch that.
Okay, Eric, I think that meansthat you've got the next sub
genre, right? We'll keep itwide ranging for easy pickings.
One of mythis actually came out of, I'm
not going to say who, because wesay his name every damn episode.
But the recommended or talkedabout the documentary, not quite
(56:41):
Hollywood, which is aboutozploitation, yeah, and a
fabulous documentary, yeah, yes,to Bronzo. But um, there was,
oh, we should talk aboutAustralian films. So okay, oh,
there's a lot more down therethan you might expect. There's a
lot of great ones you alreadyknow about, but there's a lot
more down there too. So goodstuff, awesome Australian films
(57:04):
next week. Well, then this isthe part where we say thanks to
