Unknown (00:00):
God, I've seen so much.

(00:00):
Oh, I'm sorry. Did I break yourconcentration?

(00:12):
Somewhere between science andsuperstition,
such sites to show youstrange eons. Welcome to strange
eons. Radio that is Eric overthere somewhere. Hello, and that

(00:36):
is Vanessa over there somewhere.
And I am Kelly gang. We're doinga sudden zoom call, because just
before recording, Vanessa, youdid not feel very well today. I
don't feel goodand hot and cold at the same
time. Ohwell, I feel I feel horrible

(00:57):
that I don't get to see you guysin person. I appreciate you not
bringing your filth up to myhouse. You're
welcome. It's always the goodway to go.
I mean, you know, as soon as Icome in, I lick every surface
anyway, so we saved thatpleasure.
Yeah, every time you go to thebathroom, it's really gross.

(01:20):
The fridge handle. I gotta getthis good.
This has gotten out of hand anddisgusting quickly. Yeah, well,
I feel I feel horrible aboutthat. Life is hard enough
without your body then decidingto go. I don't feel very good.
I love it because it reminds meof when it doesn't suck, and it

(01:41):
gives me a little extra joy forthe good times, you know,
because otherwise, if you justfeel good all the time, then you
never realize how good you haveit
you need, you need the downs sothat you can appreciate the F's
exactly good point. Yeah, thatyou know what. Let me just put
this out here again. I say itall the time, but you know, we

(02:02):
don't really live in the world.
We live in our heads. And soyour world is how you decide
your world is, if you're gonnago out and search for all the
horrible things in the world, which there are plenty, your
brain is this, this constantbias confirmation machine that
just goes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. That's what you want,

(02:24):
right? Yeah. Conversely, if yousit there and go, life is good,
then you start seeing all thethings that are good. So put
that in your head every once ina while, make sure you
concentrate on the people youlove and not the horrible shit
that you can't do a thing about, and you will be a happier
person, at least, that's what Ihear. That's what I've been

(02:44):
told.
I will say, I'm an irritatingoptimist, like people get
frustrated with how optimistic Iam, but it's hard work. You
know, you have to, you have tobe willing to say, okay, there
are bad, bad things. It's notlike you're blind to it. You
just have to go, I have to makea decision. And every time you
have to make a decision, like,am I going to give in, or am I

(03:07):
going to just, like, pushthrough? So it's, it's easy
either way, to kind of, like, fall into the darkness. And
that's, it's tough. It's a toughworld right now, especially now
leaning in the optimism like Ialso do, also makes it possible
to do a show like this, where wedon't have to just sit here and
complain about all the shitthat's driving us nuts right
now, and we can enjoy let metalk about 405,

(03:33):
all my true anger.
Exact a Mundo. Hey. Speaking ofthings that we enjoy, I saw a
couple movies this week that Iactually liked a lot. Oh,
okay, have youguys seen heart eyes yet? No,
but I hear that it's so muchbetter than the all the movies I
chose to seeyou chose a poor Valentine's Day
moviebecause this is adorable and

(04:00):
gross, gory,I'm not sure that it nails the
landing, but I also didn't hatethe landing. I thought it was
very funny, as I'm watching itto realize that it's set in
Seattle. And I was like, oh. Andthen I'm looking at her, I'm
like, is that Seattle? I don'tremember that Harry. And then I
was like, Oh, that looks kind oflike Seattle there. And then

(04:22):
bunch of palm trees around thepolice station. And I was like,
this is not, this is notSeattle. Definitely not Seattle.
So Oh, and a huge, huge setpiece during a drive in theater.
I was like, No, unfortunately, this gigantic drive in theater
exists nowhere in WashingtonState, much less, like I've

(04:42):
been to all the drive intheaters, I think within a like
100 mile radius, yeah, and this, this scene is
huge. It looks like, you know, probably 800 cars can be there.
And then in the background isthe Space Needle. And I was
like, I want this place toexist. So bad,
plow down everything in theSeattle Center and just put in a

(05:05):
drive inthere. But the movie itself is
really funny. It's it's almost ahallmark rom con in the
beginning with a meet cute tothese two characters who are
very attractive and hate eachother, and you know, they're
going to fall for each other, and it just so happens while
there is this murderous rampagegoing on. And I was just

(05:27):
delighted with this movie. Ithink I've heard a lot of people
kind of complain about how it'sa little stupid. And I was like,
are we worried about that in ourhorror films now and rom
coms. I mean, that's acombination of, let's let things
go while we watch it. Moviesthere. Yeah,

(05:49):
I thought the acting was fine. Ithought the story was fun. I
thought the killer was wasreally cool. He wears a mask
with these LED heart eyes. Andall I could think of as a
filmmaker was, I don't know ifyou've ever put one of those
masks on. You can't see agoddamn thing because the lights
are shining right in your eyes.
I was like, This must have beenimpossible for this guy to
actually see anything while theywere shooting. But it's a really

(06:12):
looking mask, like,I gotta look cool as this
killer. But you know, yeah, yeah. So that one is
available to rent. It might evenbe on Prime now for free. I
don't think so, not yet, but itis a cheap rental, and I
thought, well worth it. It'scalled heart eyes,

(06:33):
amazing. Oh man, I gotta checkthat out. Well, I saw something
that just popped up onto AppleTV, which is a film called The
gorge, yeah, oh, yeah. I wantedto watch that, yeah, starring
miles, Teller and Anya Taylorjoy, um, with some a little bit
of signal Sigourney Weaversprinkled in here and there. Um,

(06:55):
it's, I don't know, from thetrailer, it makes it look like
this sort of, almost a littlebit sci fi, like maybe spy
versus spy, or thriller orwhatever. No, it's full fucking
blown sci fi romance. Yes, yeah, yeah. So you have a situation

(07:16):
where there are two people whoare some of the best assassins
in the entire world. One is onthe western hemisphere, is one,
and one is part of like kind ofthe Russian Empire. And they're
both pulled from theirrespective places, agreeing to
do a job, put onto thesehelicopters, drugged separately
by their respective nations, andbrought to a location, woken up,

(07:40):
don't know where they are, andtold that for the next year they
will be defending their half ofthis gorge and wild. Yeah. So
what they're trying to stop isthings coming out of the gorge.
What those things are takes alittle while to show up and
figure out what's going on. Andin the meantime, they're both

(08:01):
really bored, and they're notallowed to talk to each other,
but Anya Taylor joy is just thisbucket attitude Russian chick
who gets drunk on her birthdayand just starts writing big
notes across the way and likebugging him. And of course,
there are assassins there. Theyhave all the equipment to easily
read each other's thing, nomatter how big the gorgeous and

(08:24):
it's yeah, it's a it's anothermeet cute. But when it gets
crazy, it gets fucking crazy, like this, the CGI, the
monsters, the the place isbananas, like it's absolutely
incredible. I loved this movie.
It was just so much better thananything I could have imagined

(08:46):
it would be. It's not perfect.
There's, there are a few momentsin there and you're like, oh,
but overall, I had such a goodtime. Yeah, I saw this one also,
and it is. It kind of wentbonkers into an area I was not
expecting. And I was like, Oh,wow, this is a lot more than I
thought this movie was going tobe. I think I liked the first

(09:08):
half better than the secondhalf, yeah. And then, you know,
getting to know each otheracross the gorge and everything.
What it really shifts gearspretty hard. So,
yeah, but I thought that therewere a couple of cute moments as
like, they're playing chessacross the gorge, which I

(09:30):
thought was, you know, a cutethrowback to Anya Taylor Joy's
big series. And then they showhim playing drums on the other
side of the gorge. I was like, alittle, little throwback to
whiplash. I was like, this movieis cute. It's made for people
who like movies. And then whenit, when it gets into the action

(09:53):
stuff, I was like, Wow. Ithought for sure we were going
to be seeing them. Um, having tofight off a horde of creatures
coming out of the gorge, yeah, when they actually end up in the
gorge, I was like, this is notwhere I thought this movie was
going at all. No,no. And, and the monsters down
there are just, well, it remindsme a little bit of it. Is it

(10:13):
assimilation? What's the what'sthe annihilation? Annihilation?
Yeah, it's kind of like that.
And it's a bit video gamey too, when you when you're down there.
So it really does shift intolike, superhero, superpowers,
not not superpowers, but likethey are. They are gods, like,
yeah, to survive the things theysurvive. But it's a fun ride.

(10:36):
And I appreciated, I reallyappreciated them spending so
much time up front, establishingthe relationship they have.
Yeah, yeah, I agree. That'scalled the gorge, and that's
just on apple plus, I think, yep, Apple TV plus, yeah,
cool. Okay, so I saw one of the,I guess you'd call it big

(10:59):
releases of the current time themonkey,
oh, I want to hear all about it.
I saw this at like, I went to a10am screening time I could get
in and which I think might hurtit a little, because there's
only, like, five people inthere. And it's, it's a comedy,

(11:24):
kind of, it's kind of a darkcomedy. And it was one of those
dark, dark enough comedies whereI'm kind of sitting there going,
anybody else laughing at all ofthis. I just a little too warped
here. What is? What is wrong?
Why aren't people? But it, itdoes a couple things that were

(11:44):
disappointing, little too muchCGI in the mention, you know,
they talk about how gory themovie is. A lot of the lot of
the big Gore is CGI, which hurtsthose moments. But it has been
forever since I read the story,so the basics are all I remember

(12:06):
in it seems to get that. It iswell acted, it's fun, it's
ridiculous at times, and all thein in not a bad way. It feels
just a touch of, do you want tobe horror or do you want to be
comedy? And I wish it would havepushed one way or the other a

(12:26):
little harder, but sort of like, you know, it's the same director
as long legs, and there's a lotin long legs where it's like,
wow, this is really good. I wishit had pushed into the weird or
into the procedure a littleharder, instead of sort of
sitting on a weird line. Andthis kind of does that too, but
it's good, and I fell for theinsanity.

(12:53):
Oh, you did. Oh, my God, you didit.
If I had known you were doingthat, I would have PayPal you
some money or something and askyou to get one for me. That was
thelast minute thing I walked in,
goingabout, they even have any left?
Like, yeah, we do. Like, oh,okay, I guess I'll get one.

(13:15):
That's my Wow. It is prettycool. It's, it's huge. Man.
Geez, it's so large. Yeah, butyeah, if you had any interest in
King, I would definitely, definitely check this one out.
If you like long lakes,I don't like Stephen King at
all. No, not at all. I'vebeen looking forward to this

(13:37):
one. I know that it doesn'treally follow the story that
much at all, which is only aboutfour pages long. And at first I
was a little bummed to see that, instead of the symbols coming
together, it's a drumming thing.
And then, did you see the reasonthey changed? That
isn't it like a right?
Was, oh, is it a No, I didn't.
What is thatDisney trademarked that symbol

(14:00):
monkey because it was in ToyStory four. Oh,
my God, that's silly. Yeah, wow.
Oh,they do some cool stuff with the
monkey having little drumsticks.
So, you know, they, they kind ofmake up for it. So that's all
right, stuff he couldn't havedone with symbols. Yeah.

(14:22):
This is still on my list. I wantto see it just because. So tell
me this from the trailer, I gotthe feeling this was going to
be, the deaths were going to bekind of along the lines of, like
a final destination movie, yes, yeah, okay, and those are
the parts that, when they dothat, there's a few they do
really well, and those are someof the good combinations of gore

(14:43):
and humor to a few of them. Andone particular works really
well. I was like, Oh man, keepdoing that. But it was, yeah,
it's definitely worth seeing.
Yeah, it just has that, like, Isaid, the same thing with long

(15:04):
legs, where it's, like, I reallylike this, but there's something
weird here. And this one is samething. I really like it. And I'm
pretty sure if I, when I see itagain, I'm gonna like it even
more nice. Yes, go seeit. That is the monkey still in
theaters. I also saw one of thebig ones in the theater, the new

(15:25):
Captain America, brave newworld, a big one. You know, I
liked it. I liked it more than alot of the last couple Marvel
films that have come out. We'vebeen on a text thread with our
buddy, Micah, who was pointingout some of the stuff that I

(15:48):
hardly noticed at all. So Iclearly was not paying as close
attention as he was to the poorADR and stuff like that. Yeah,
I didn't notice that either.
Yeah.
Somebody messed up because therewas a technical glitch in the

(16:10):
monkey. There was a skip like, like five seconds where there's
a you could tell it was adigital glitch. Oh,
interesting. Maybe that's whathe saw. I glitched Captain
America. Yeah, it could be. I,I wish that this had been closer
to the Captain America movie TheWinter Soldier, which kind of

(16:33):
grounded Captain America alittle more. It's really hard to
do that when your CaptainAmerica can now fly and shoot
energy blasts out of his wingsand all of this stuff. I was
like, they've kind of turned himinto Iron Man now and and I
don't know if I like that partas much, but I thought that Sam
Wilson as Captain America. I waslike, You know what? I think I'm

(16:58):
fine with this. I thought he dida good job. What about how did
you feel about Harrison Ford andhis his whole thing, I here's,
here's what I will say aboutHarrison Ford. I don't know why
this guy continues to makemovies, because He clearly
doesn't want to be in movies, and he sleep walks through this

(17:24):
like he has the last Star Warsmovie and the last Indiana Jones
movie. The last time I saw himactually kind of bite into a
role, I think was Blade Runner2049, and I think that he's
just, I don't know what his dealis, if he needs more money,
I think he's just old. I thinkhe was really giving it his

(17:44):
best.
Do you okay? You did you likehim? I liked, well, I don't like
that character a ton, but I wasexcited to see more of the tie
ins to the first Hulk film. Thatis sort of the, you know, Red
Headed step child of the MCU,where it's, yeah, it counts. But
like, I was like, Oh, hey, they're actually making it

(18:06):
count. Cool. So I liked thatpart. But also, like Ross, I
don't give a fuck, man. I don'tknow how much I'm supposed to
care about this dude, whatever.
I couldn't remember who the guywho fucked over even was from
the previous film, because it'sbeen a good since I've seen it,
right?
I remembered him fine, but I didthink it was wild that the only

(18:32):
thing you really needed to knowbefore this movie was that
Incredible Hulk movie from 15years ago. Yes, and Falcon and
the Winter Soldier?
No, the Falcon Winter Soldier.
Stuff the fact that they werelike, Man, I don't deserve to be
the Winter Soldier. I'm like, you had a whole season to learn
this lesson. We can't say thisnow. I've already gone on this

(18:54):
journey with you. No bad move.
Oh, movie, but they were justdid not explain any of that. I
was like, oh shit, it's LivTyler's, like, photo on a frame.
They're going with that and noone else you know. Like, if you

(19:14):
didn't see that movie andremember that she is the love
interest, then you wouldn't havecared at all. And I was like,
this is like a big drop. Ithought, maybe not. I don't
know. Iwould have thought that if they
were going to do the Red Hulk, that there should have at least
been a cameo by Bruce Banner, ifnot the Hulk.

(19:35):
Why didn't he hulk out on thesub? That's what I don't
understand. That would have beenso much danger and so much
stress and like, no, they waituntil it's like a perfectly
acceptable fight area. I waslike, yeah,
yeah, I don't know. I mean, it'snot a it's certainly not a
perfect movie, but I did enjoyit more than the last couple the

(19:57):
Eternals. And I guess you dohave to know. Out the Eternals,
because they suddenly make theeternal that's sticking out of
the earth is now the source ofAdamantium. I was like, oh,
okay, watchingperson forward explain what
adamantium was, was one of thebest cinematic moments I've
seen. And like, I was like, yes, brava, they made you do that.

(20:19):
He had to be sitting theregoing, you know what? I thought
the Star Wars dialog was awful, yeah, but, but anyway, I liked
it well enough, and I was gladto see that it had a huge
opening, even though the criticswere not very kind to it. So, so

(20:40):
now we'll see what comes next.
What does come next?
Film wise, Fantastic Four,Fantastic
Four, which has no tie toanything previous. So that
looks so promising, man, I know, right, that trailer. Really
excited. Really, really excited.
Yeah, little Pedro's growing uplongest. Overnight sensation

(21:02):
ever.
Well, speaking of Marvel, Iwatched the entirety of friendly
neighborhood. Spider Man, yeah.
Did you finish it up? Kelly, Idid. I loved it. It's
pretty dang good, prettydang good. I My expectations

(21:24):
were not great, because I waslike, I am so fucking sick of
watching spider man getrebooted. But the way that it's
dealt with the story linesthey're following, I love that
it's an alt universe in the waythat it's like, Hey, I mean, as
somebody who read the wholerunaways line, I was like,
fucking what, what you're here, okay? And then, like, trying to

(21:46):
chase, like, who differentpeople are, and like, what their
versions of life in thisuniverse are, and I am. It was
really good. And I think theygot the heart of Spider Man
perfectly. I love the journey hegoes through. I was really
worried about the footballplayer,
whose name I've forgotten, notLuke, but

(22:08):
flash. He turns into turns intotombstone. Tombstone
hands up as tombs, somethingwith an L, but like, he's such a
good guy. And I was like, Oh,sure, now you're in the game.
Great. Fuck you. I hate thestoryline. I hate everything
bad. And then eventually I waslike, Okay, I like, kind of came
around to it, but by the timethey finished the season, I I

(22:28):
felt like they did a pretty goodjob. So, yeah, what is that?
Disney plus Disney plus, yeah, Ifelt the same way. You know,
when I first started watchingthat, I was like, okay, nah. I
don't know if this is great ornot, but I'm in it because I
thought the animation wasbeautiful. I love that the
characters, some of thecharacters, look like they're

(22:50):
right off of a Steve Ditko page, but then it'll switch to John
Romita Jr version of a differentcharacter. It's like they chose
the most interesting version ofthat character to be the
animated version. And I thoughtthat was really neat. And I'm
gonna give away one little thingthat just kind of blew my mind.

(23:12):
You know, we we always get theBen telling Peter with great
power comes greatresponsibility. And in this one,
he's basically working for HarryOsborn, and Harry tells him he
can't hold back, because withgreat power comes great respect.
Yeah? And I was like, I did notsee this coming. This is kind of

(23:37):
brilliant. Yeah.
Great job with Osborne, andwho's his first his best
friends, the girl, no, no, no,like, normally, typically his
best friend, nor Well, I guessHarry, okay, so because Norman,
oh, Norman Osborne, the dad andHarry, yeah, like, I loved that

(23:59):
budding relationship, and howhe's like a social media star,
the Harry. And it's like, right?
Yes, I don't know. There was alot of just neat things, and
they kept hot Aunt May, which Iwas like, Austin and I were
talking about how there's gonnabe a whole generation of people
who only know Aunt May as hotAunt May. And it's like, oh, you

(24:22):
know what? Though, that makes somuch more sense than than a 16
year old kid who's got an 80year old aunt, like, how old
were his folks?
Like, had that's the oldersister. The younger sister was
born 20 years later.
So, yeah, it's a great littleshow, and it's done now. I think

(24:42):
it was 10 episodes, and Ithought it ended on a really
interesting note. And just like, wow, please. More of this.
They have been greenlit for twomore seasons, so you will get
more of this excellentwith that and the X Men cartoon.
I. I'm like, wow, I never sawmyself as being a big Marvel
cartoon guy. But yeah, for good reason,

(25:08):
up until recently, for reallygood reason. Yeah, it's like, if
Disney's got it, don't worry, they will put out more stuff. If
a bit on Netflix, you might go,maybe it will, maybe it won't,
but there'll be three seasons ofvarious different characters
spinning off from the show.
Probablyspeaking of spinning off sort
of, I've been watching the duneprophecy show on, what is it?

(25:33):
HBO, yeah, on max. And after thelast time I talked about dune
too, I was like, you know, I'veread the first book three or
four times. I should maybe readthe second one. So I've read the
second one, and I'm in themiddle of, well, I just started
children at dune. And thisfills, this gets the world.

(25:56):
Still, there's one weird, weirdproblem with it. It's supposed
to take place 10,000 yearsbefore all the tradies am i
Everybody looks really similarin their outfits and the tech
they've got and everythingthat's going on for 10,000 years

(26:16):
to have passed. I know they'renot supposed to create any
Intelligent Robotics orcomputers because of the wars
and the destruction, but itseems like maybe fashion would
change. People might look alittle different in the way they
dressed after 10,000 years. Butputting that aside, it's the

(26:39):
story of the the formation ofthe which is the that belief
system and the learning of thevoice, and all the things that
go along with that. So it's it'sinteresting. I would not
recommend it to anybody whodidn't really like the movies or
really like the book, because itis similarly paced is one of
those things that like, I'mreading dune Messiah going, I'm

(27:04):
really into this, but nothing isgoing on. I don't know it's all
this weird political intriguestuff, but so, yeah, it's, it's
good, but it definitely requiresa doom fan, I think whatever
weird name they have.

(27:27):
So that's Doom prophecy. Is it?
Is it doing things that yourecognize as, oh, this is going
to mean something when you getto the first Okay,
yeah, that's part of the part ofthe problem. Again, with the
10,000 years they're doing stuffthat feels like, Oh, I could see
where this would develop inabout five years now. But yeah,

(27:51):
definitely it. It does a reallygood job of painting the picture
of like in here the harkonnensare, have been defeated, and are
kind of the powerless peons ofthe universe, and they're kind
of starting to rise up a littlebit, but yeah, so definitely

(28:12):
fits in cool, and that is on maxright? Yes, yep, Max Doom
prophecy. Okay, how about wetake a little break? Vanessa can
get six or seven more blanketson her, if possible,
and then back foot it openwhen we come back, we are
talking about Aussie flicks. IAttention to your ring Raiders,

(28:46):
evil Skull Squadron, clothing, class scramble, ring raise,
intercept. Skull Squadron thatare worth the odds the battle
blaster sound machines makeevery dog fight seem real.
Missiles, lot collect thegreatest fighter planes of all
time, 48 hot looking, highlydetailed planes available in
squadrons of four, ring Raiders, video blaster and planes from

(29:11):
matchbox. The command is in yourhands. You and we are back,
Eric, this was your sub genrepick. What were we talking

(29:33):
about?
Australian films. You know, theplace you go, where you want
critters to kill you.
Apparently, everythingwants to kill you in Australia,
okay, well, I'm gonna give youfive minutes on the strangee
ends radio buzzer, and I willshow you it's going right now.

(29:55):
All right, so I picked one thatone watched for a while,
that. From 19761976 Mad Dog, Morgan, it'll be
your money or your life. Youyou. It's me,

(30:31):
and tell me, what do you thinkcreates a monster like this man
Morgan, your Chinese love andbastard and
her entire stranger, man, stranger. Daniel Morgan, quite a

(30:56):
man. He'sa name with 1000 pounds reward
and blood on hishead, I told you not to call for
the Police. You tell him I'mcoming across that river. You

(31:28):
senior, call me Mr. DanielMorgan.
This is, well, it's aninteresting film. Let's just say

(31:51):
that it's available from shoutfactory, prime, free, the few
different places, directed byPhilip Mara, who you may know
from Dracula Nazi Hunter, how Ilearned to love Christopher Lee
and drink atomic bombs, or maybethe mystery of the reclining

(32:14):
nude. No wait, I got it howlingtwo and the Beast Within those
you know, okay, written byPhilip Moore as well roast most
of his stuff, also MargaretCarnegie, who this is the only
film He's listed as havingwritten the stars Dennis Hopper

(32:36):
came down, got pulled down tothere to follow up. Easy writer
and pre see blue velvet andspeed. Dude's been in 208
things, man, uh, Jack Thompson, who is in breaka moral, the
recent man thing. And Paul, Ithink Paul verhoeves, flesh plus
blood, uh, David Gopi, crocodile. Dundee walk about,

(33:03):
and he's a IndigenousAustralian. So the movie bake
breakdown. This is more or lessbreakdown based on a real person
named Daniel Morgan. Dives rightin with a guy explaining how mad
dog has recently been killedafter a manhunt of a long time.

(33:23):
The credits roll and kind of letme know I'm probably not a big
fan of long form dickery. Domusic? Tell you three minutes of
credits and nothing, but that'slike, wow, that's a lot. Not
surprisingly, the film is startsoff with some fairly racist
stuff, but Mad Dog Morgan is theHero, Hero, and punches out the

(33:46):
racist guy. So, you know, establish him as a complicated
character. Right off the bat. Hethen goes and does opium and
gets that the opium thendestroyed, and his one friend
gets killed, and he ends upgoing to jail, and the getting
out of jail, but then shortlyafter that, killing a lawman,

(34:11):
and that's pretty much the restof the movie is him getting
hunted down. It's sort of atwisting of a American western
or the Italian westerns, eventhough we're done before that,
and it doesn't quite pull it offin a lot of ways, Dennis feels

(34:34):
like he's giving it all, buthe's giving it all through my, I
don't know, drunken or drughaze, where he just seemed oddly
disconnected, even though he'sjust feels like he's given
everything he can. It's verystrange. I mean, he's good. It's
entertaining. If you're a DennisHopper fan, you should see this

(34:55):
most of the rest of the movie, but the.
He goes from being that kind ofheroic guy in the beginning to
just sort of a dick, as it goeson, with occasionally, kind of
coming to the rescue ofsomebody. So it's a uneven film.

(35:17):
The immediate film finished andimmediately polarized audiences
on Australia, some of themabsolutely hated it, shocked and
horrified at the portrayal ofAustralia being filled with a
guy like that, even though he's,I think Irish, or he's Irish in
the movie, and boy DennisHopper's Irish accent something
to behold.

(35:39):
But there's likekillings of cops. There's a
Diddy, or did he not get rapescene with Dennis Hopper in
prison. And so, you know, it's,it's not a subtle film. Trauma
entertainment was the first torelease this in the US. Is a
heavily edited version. But nowthis one is the unedited. I'm

(36:02):
not entirely certain what wascut out. The critic, John Simon,
wrote about this movie. Whoevercan find me a film more
incoherent, indeed inept, gets areward in the shape of the ear,
ears of a wombat. Don't lie. Sowow, yeah, it was not received
particularly well. I want to seeit a

(36:31):
while, glad I saw it, but didfind myself
actually really enjoying forabout half an hour, and then
getting really bored for awhile, and then, like, Okay,
this is but I could also this isone that it's such a weird film.
There are people that love thisfilm, I can guarantee you,
because it is really strange.

(36:52):
I've never even heard of thismovie. Oh, really, no. This is
not on my radar at all. Wild, yep. Well, I said. Dennis
Hopper, 208 films, so right,he's done a few.
Vanessa, you wanna absolutelyput five minutes on the buzzer

(37:13):
for you?
Perfect. Well, this was a greatopportunity for me to re watch
Picnic at Hanging Rock from 1975what we see and what we seem
about a dream, a dream within adream.

(37:37):
Well, young ladies, we areindeed fortunate in the weather
for our picnic to Hanging Rockonce again. Let me remind you,
the rock itself is extremelydangerous. You are therefore
forbidden any tomboy foolishnessin the matter of exploration,
even on the lower slopes. I alsowish to remind you the vicinity
is renowned for its venomoussnakes and poisonous ants of

(37:59):
various species. It is, however,a geological marvel that is all.
Have a pleasant day and try tobehave yourselves in a manner to
bring credit to the college.

(38:20):
Stop to 12 you. 12. Neverstopped before. Must be
something magnetic.
Everything begins and ends atexactly the right time and

(38:42):
place.
You must learn to love someoneelse apart from me. I won't be
here much longer. Iyeah, I hadn't seen in a while,

(39:20):
and I was hoping I still likedit. So this is directed by Peter
Weir, who has 31 credits, including Dead Poets, society,
witness Gallipoli, The TrumanShow, Master and Commander. It's
based on a book by Joan Lindsay.
Pretty modest budget, 443 to480,000

(39:44):
probably Australian didgeridoosor whatever they
trade back and forth. And it didpretty good. It got 5.2 million,
starring mostly unknowns. Theypurposely went out of their way
to find kind of local schoolgirls and not known talents.
Maybe the only recognizableperson, aside from like one
super, super tiny part who endedup being a larger lady, was the

(40:08):
school Head Mistress, played byRachel Roberts, who has 54
credits, including Murder on theOrient Express when a stranger
calls Charlie Chan and the curseof the Dragon Queen. The story
is that it is St Valentine'sDay, and the students from Apple
Apple yard College, a girlsPrivate School in Victoria,
Australia, are super hyped. Theywander around the grounds

(40:30):
getting ready for the day, sharing their Valentines and
enjoying flowers. There's just alot of general merriment. Two
roommates, Miranda and Sarah, are hanging out when Miranda
tells Sarah that she will needto learn to love somebody else
and be okay without her, whichis an ominous thing to get to
hear from your best friend.
Meanwhile, everyone's gettingready to take a very special
field trip to enjoy picnic atPicnic at Hanging Rock. They're

(40:52):
warned ahead that Hanging Rockis a dangerous place and you
should not explore itindependently. And not only it
is is it large and easy get lostin. It's also filled with
venomous snakes and poisonousants. They say this many times,
then they all pile into acarriage get ready to go,

(41:12):
because this is 1900 ish times, except for Sarah, who's pulled
to the side and basically toldyou will not be going today.
Sarah is kind of unpopular, notonly with the girls, but also
with the headmistress and thestaff. She's an orphan, and
basically because of that, they're just dicks to her. When
the group gets to Hanging Rock, they enjoy some food and lazily

(41:36):
hang around in the shade at theRock space they read Shakespeare
and nap and eat. Four studentsasked if it can be excused to go
measure the rock using geometry.
They are granted permission andMiranda, Marion, Irma and Edith
leave. But of course, they haveno intention of taking
measurements, and instead playand frolic and explore the rock.

(42:00):
The further up they go, theStranger Things become, as there
seems to be an almost descentinto madness as they keep going
up. Edith is tired and suddenlyfilled with panic when the girls
turn around to bend without herand near the top of the rock,
she rushes back down all the wayscreaming at the top of her
lungs, going through thornbushes and all kinds of shit.

(42:21):
And then when she gets to thebottom, they're like, what's
wrong? And she's like, I have noidea. So the group returns the
school much later than expected, missing the remaining three
girls in addition to a teacher,a great search begins for the
girls from the local town. Butdays pass without any sight of
them. Sarah becomes moredespondent and distressed, as
Miranda was her only realfriend, the headmistress becomes

(42:43):
more and more cruel to her, andthe pressure of the missing girl
seems to become a punishmentaimed directly at her. A young
man who was at the rock that daybecomes obsessed with finding
the girls, specifically Miranda, because she's gorgeous and
everyone loves her for somereason. And along with his
servant slash friend, they goback to the rock searching for
the girls. They do not come backempty handed. So this story is

(43:06):
cool because it's a mystery, andit stays a mystery. I think
that's what's so compellingabout it. No one seems to really
know what happened, and nomatter how many like little
threads and little extra guineasthey pass along the way, you
don't get any new clues. It'sjust like, Oh, and this person
saw something, but they can'tremember. Or, you know, this

(43:29):
thing emerged, but it doesn'tmean anything. It's extremely
beautiful, it's slow, it'sdreamy, it's super surrealist.
There's a just kind of longingfrom every character, Miranda
longs for death or fate. Sarahis longing for Miranda Michaels
longing for answers. Theheadmistress is longing for the

(43:49):
success of the bygone days.
There's also a moment whereeverything goes into a frenzy
that feels kind of like HeavenlyCreatures. It's pretty cool
watching a bunch of school girlsgo bat shit is terrifying. It's
like watching fucking hyenasattack. It's true, true stuff. I
love the film at the time I sawit and I loved it again. I think
it's super rich. It's unique.

(44:13):
It's the landscape is gorgeous, the era it captures. It's
interesting. And I just love thefilm, like style, also things I
didn't realize the first timearound, ominous pan flute. It's
a lot of ominous pan flutehappening this. Occasionally
there's an ominous theremin. Iwas like, man, there's a lot of

(44:35):
just strange in. The occasionalzoom in on like a koala, and
you're like, ominous koala,Australia, Australia. Australia
is fucked. Man. Not a ton oftrivia taglines on St
Valentine's Day in 1900 800 aparty of school rolls set out to
picnic rock and some neverreturn. We shall only be gone a

(44:59):
little while. While and the oneI hate the most a recollection
of evil. They're trying to makeit sound like it's a horror
film, and it's like got likedarkness to it, but it's not a
horror film. Everybody staysvery purposely vague about
whether or not this story istrue. When Peter Weir asked the
author Joan Lindsay, if it wastrue, she said, Young man, I

(45:19):
hope you do not ask me thatquestion again. No one
explicitly says it's not true, but it's it's not true. However,
the crew and a lot of the castfound the rock itself very
unsettling. Strange things didhappen when they were filming
there, including things likewatches stopping, things going
missing. Just generally,everybody felt very

(45:41):
uncomfortable being there. And,yeah, it's there was once in
2018 a six episode, mini seriesstarring Natalie Dormer and
Samara weaving, released onprime also about picnic, Hanging
Rock. I have not seen it. Ishould.
Yeah, this is a cool movie.
Yeah, that's pretty good. Yeah, very, very unsettling. I saw the

(46:02):
mini series and it's not ascool. They tell in, you know,
whatever, six hours or fourhours or something, what was
told much better in two hours.
Oh,that's a bummer. Yeah, I think
they do such a good job. I mean, you do feel like there's moments
missing from the film, like theheadmistress is just like, all

(46:25):
right, Sarah's just gone home, and then you find out what
happened to Sarah, and there'sno, like, real explanation. I
don't know, like, things justhappen. And in a way, that's
cool, because you're like, Okay,I didn't, like have a bunch of
time wasted on it, but I alsowould have liked maybe a little
more like, hints as to stuffthat was about to happen or did

(46:48):
happen. But it's, it's a coolit's a cool thought. I'm just
bummed that I missed it becauseI played at Cinerama this week,
but I could not get out there.
Wow, yeah, yeah. It's part ofthe series of stuff going on out
there. There's some reallyinteresting things getting
shown. SoI saw this first about 25 or 30
years ago, and it was told to methat this was absolutely a true

(47:10):
story. So it has been proventhat it is not a true story at
all. Yeah.
I mean, just to just for anexample, it says, like on the
cover, or whatever that thistook place on Saturday on
february 14 in the year 1900Valentine's Day fell on

(47:30):
Wednesday in 1900 there's like,it's not a true story, no, like
she made it up. It's actuallybased on, I watched the little
documentary about it that'sattached to the criterion blu
ray, which is how I saw it, andit's based off of a dream, or a
series of dreams she had, and, yeah, and it just really stuck

(47:50):
with her, and so she she wroteit out, and that's, that's where
the story comes from. Okay.
Well, I mean, it's all real.
Kelly,Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This
one all real, because normally I would be kind
of disappointed that there is norevelation to what is, what the

(48:11):
mystery is at the end of this.
And I was okay with it, becauseI thought this was a true story.
News. On a dream. So, you know,it never the dream never
finished, yeah, woke her up. Allright, what'd you watch this on?
Is that available to stream? Um,it probably is. I would guess it

(48:34):
would be available on Prime butI watched it on my criterion,
Blu Ray copy. Um, Max, Max, oh,Max, cool. I might give
that another watch and thencomplain bitterly the entire
time. That's not how thishappened
at all. I'm telling you, it'llget there you go. All right,
guys putting five minutes on thebuzzer. And I am talking about a

(48:58):
film from 2017 called bore you.
Okay,Cabin Fever is officially set
in. I suggest the next town wecome to, we pull over and get
some grub. Sounds? Great?

(49:22):
You? Someone's been tearing thefences down there the old
Pattersons farm. He's down a fewsheep too. Something's killed

(49:47):
him. Yeah, well, what? All nineof them? There's nothing out
there except dust and ruse.
That's a load of shit. Ernie andyou know it. You remember that?
Smash up on the highway cominginto town right about 12 months
ago, they couldn't find thecouple. All the police found was
the wreck car I was driving backfrom Bob's place in the truck,

(50:11):
and I saw something in thepattern about three or 400
meters off when I hit the spottyon it.
It was a bore. Youthere's a wild cake.

(51:12):
Ready, which is what everybodyscreams in the audience when I
start talking. This is directedby Chris Sun, who has six
credits, including come and getme daddy's little girl, the
possessed and Charlie's farm.
And it's written by Chris andKirsty Dallas, who is listed as

(51:34):
the story editor, and she islisted as story editor on all of
his movies, but also then awritten by so it's a weird
credit she gets anyway, starringNathan Jones, who has 35
credits. He was in Mad Max FuryRoad and Furiosa. He was in
Hobbs and Shaw spiderhead, Rickystaniki. You'd recognize him

(51:59):
very much, because he is the guyin mad, Max Fury Road who holds
up the dead baby. I had a littlebrother, you know. So he's that
big bald guy, and he looks justlike that in this movie, too. So
it's like, Oh, okay. This isalso starring John Gerrard, who
has 102 credits, including WolfCreek, Christmas Down Under and

(52:21):
six episodes of Darby and Joanand Bill Moseley is in this 149
credits, including TexasChainsaw Massacre, two house of
1000 corpses and prisoners ofthe ghost land. Have you guys
seen boar? Yeah, I have no,okay, Eric, this is your kind of
movie. We open with a coupledriving along a road in the

(52:44):
outback of Australia, andthey're young and they're cute
and in love and teasing eachother, and then all of a sudden,
the man swerves and slams on thebrakes, and we see he has
narrowly missed hitting a tinyrabbit. They laugh this off, but
then they are suddenly in themiddle of a stampede of feral
pigs. It's kind of wild to seeall these pigs running around
their vehicle and across theroad in front of them, and they

(53:06):
have time to say, I wonder whatthat was about, when all of a
sudden a boar as big as afucking rhinoceros slams into
their truck and kills them. Soyes, this is an Australian
Creature Feature about adinosaur sized bore, and it is a
lot of fun. Actually, we followa small family that has traveled

(53:26):
to visit an uncle who owns asmall farm just outside of town,
and man, the killing startsimmediately. The neighbor farmer
goes out at night looking forhis dog, and instead stumbles on
this giant boar who kills andeats him and the dog after
plowing through their barbedwire fence, and then the next
night, the board goes tramplingthrough a campsite and kills and

(53:47):
eats a young couple. In aparticularly gruesome scene,
other campers in the area scarethe boar away with a gunshot,
but when they go back to theirtruck for more ammo, the boar is
waiting for them in an ambush, and that's kind of what this
movie is about. Someone willfind a person being attacked by
the boar, will scare the boaroff, and then the person they

(54:09):
save dies from their wounds, andthen the board doubles back and
kills them too. Like you know, that's what you get for getting
in my business. Is there anyonewho can stop this boar, and will
it be the two women who were theleast likely when this film
began, and if they do, somehowhappen to kill this van sized

(54:30):
boar, what's to stop anothergiant boar from appearing and
squealing defiantly in the finalscene? Yeah, yeah. Gang, this
film, not very good, but a lotof fun. It delivers on the desk,
but because so many people arebeing killed. And I mean, the
death count is high in this, thecharacterization is paper thin,
so you don't get to knowanybody. They are introduced and

(54:54):
then they are killed. And thatis okay, because when you
finally get to. See the creaturein full. And the third act
you're like, you know what? Allworth it. Taglines in this I
don't know which one I likebest. In the Outback, no one can
hear you squeal,or hogs and kisses,

(55:19):
or get ready for some giantmonster pig on the loose fun.
Well, correcttrivia. This doesn't say we're
we are recording, okay, Hey,gang, we have had a wild glitch
here where my computer just shitthe bed, and we are now
reconvening the next day tofinish this up, because that's

(55:42):
what we do for you the listener.
Of course, Mother Nature hasother plans, because everybody's
power is starting to flickerfrom a massive windstorm. I'm
gonna rush right through the endof my trivia here. So trivia on
this movie, there is an uncutversion with more gore, but it
is yet to be released. At thebreakfast scene at the farm, one

(56:05):
of the characters talks abouthow creepy the farm they are at
is, and says, I've seenCharlie's farm, which is in
reference to an Australian goryhaunted house farm movie. This
is the same director, and thelead from this movie played
Charlie in Charlie's farm, andthe farm that he is talking
about is the same location asCharlie's farm from that movie.
So oh my god, funny thing there.
And my final bit of trivia onthis is the movie in 2020 was

(56:28):
nominated for the Best creatureeffects award at the Fangoria
chainsaw awards. The only reasonI think that's interesting is
that the movie is listed ascoming out in 2017 so I don't
know if that's because it tookthat long to get to America, or
what that was my movie. It wascalled bore before we lose all
power and everything like that.

(56:56):
Who's got the next selection?
That'll be me. What are wetalking about next week?
So next week we're going to talkabout all things animated. And
that doesn't just have to behand drawn, it can be painted.
It can be claymation. And tomake it even wider open, it
doesn't even have to be thewhole film. It can be just part

(57:16):
of the film, or, you know, alittle segment of the film, but
it could also be the whole film.
So making it easy. Make it easy.
Okay,making it easy. Okay. We're
talking about some kind ofanimation stuff next week.
There you go. Title of theepisode.

(57:38):
I'll have you guys know that Ihave now just spent multiple
hundreds of dollars that I donot have on a new computer,
which should be here this week.

Even more helps. It's calledvalue for value. If you get a
little value out of this, give alittle value back. I think
that's it, gang. I can hear therain just pelting my window
right here. Yeah,hail. We've got Lightning, we've
got all kinds of stuff overhere.

(58:45):
Yeah, right before we started, the lights here dimmed like
three times. I was kind ofhoping we'd get one of those too
while we're here, but nope. Butit is happening,
alright, so you guys batten downthe hatches, and I will see you
guys next week, and we'll seeall of you next week, hopefully
in person, and we're talkingabout some kind of animation in

(59:06):
a film.
