Unknown (00:00):
You would be better off
just making yourself a nice
(00:01):
sandwich for the day. Oh, I'msorry, did I break your
concentrationsomewhere between science and
superstition,such sights to show you.
(00:30):
Strange eons. Welcome tostrangeeons radio. That is Eric
over there. Hello, that isVanessa over there. Hello, and I
am Kelly. I wanted to talk todayabout a guy who listens to this
show. We know him as real badgeron YouTube, always makes
comments and reaches out to usand stuff, and he has
(00:52):
occasionally sent me things onInstagram and all that kind of
stuff. And, you know, I don'treally know him, but I like him,
and he sent me a Post thismorning that made me go. And it
was a it was a post of a woman.
It was video cameraed from, likeher camera in her house or
(01:13):
whatever. And she was kind ofblessing her house. And she was
saying, you know, she wasobviously reading off something,
like she'd been told, this iswhat you do if you have spirits
in the house. And shit startedhappening, and she started to
get freaked out, like, so she'sin her kitchen, and she's
saying, you know, you're notallowed in this place, please
find yourself out of this house.
(01:34):
And then, like, this pot goesflying off of the stove, and
she's like, Oh, she's talkingfaster. And then like, the
cutting board goes flying ather, and she just runs out. And
I watched it about four times, and I was like, Man, I don't see
any wires here. I don't seeanything. And so I just said,
That's pretty creepy. This guy'sname is Jeffrey gold. And I
(01:56):
said, Jeff, do you believe inghosts and spirits or anything
like that. And he said, Oh,absolutely. And he then sends me
a link to his own paranormalsite and his own experiences in
the paranormal. And I, I kind ofwanted to share that with
everybody, because it's prettyinteresting stuff. And as you
know, I I'm a skeptic, but I'mnot, like, I don't believe I'm
(02:20):
just a skeptic? I'd likesomething, and that's funny,
because Eric, you know that I'vehad a wild experience, and I
should not be as skeptical as Iam. Anyway, Jeff's name is the
name of his website, and hespells his name incorrectly.
It's G, E, O, F, F, is Jeff, G,E, O, F, F, Gould, G, o, u, l,
(02:46):
D, and his. She's not Jofflike Joffrey. It's Jeff. Sorry.
I'm just asking because I wantto make sure. I'm
gonna assume he pronounces itthe American way. That is free.
G, E, O, F, F, R, U, I, Joffrey.
I'mjust saying Joffrey, if that's
the way you spell your name, youcan type chime in. Let us know.
(03:07):
So we don't, but it's, it's Jeffgold.net, so G, E, O, F, F, G,
o, u, l, d.net/paranormal,because he's also an actor and
in commercials, I mean, you'llbe watching the movie, and
you'll be like, wait a second, that's that guy in the
background and shit like that.
(03:28):
So remember, we met him a long, long time ago. I feel like maybe
at the Lovecraft Film Festival,at the Lovecraft I think it was
the film screen, okay? And,yeah,
I've got a picture with himsomewhere. Yeah,
he's just a real interesting catdoes all this stuff. But then
when he sent me this link, I waslike, I said, Do you mind if I
(03:49):
mentioned this on the show? Andhe was like, go ahead.
I didn't know thata lot of stuff from him as well,
but I wasn't I'llshoot you the link. It's pretty,
pretty interesting. I'll alsoshoot you the video he sent me.
And you guys can kind of make upyour own minds. Yeah, I'm
excited.
I love this stuff. Sothe woman's reaction, that's
what sells all of these kind ofvideos, right? And she seems
(04:11):
very upset.
There's this Tiktok series, andI know it's like BS, but it's
this guy and his girlfriend orhis wife or whatever, and it's
just like this, always this onecamera set up kind of shitty
placement, and they just have aghost they live with. So they'll
be like, talking, and then allof a sudden something will move,
(04:32):
and they have, like, named it, Idon't know if it's like Harriet
or whatever, and they're like,Harriet, Jesus fucking Christ.
Like, go back to Jupiter. Andbecause it's so nonchalant, and
the way that they're dealingwith their particular ghost,
you're like, all right, like, Idon't know, like, it makes me
want to believe it more so well,I mean, you know, there's, you
know, we see in a spectrum thatis pretty limited. So, you know,
(04:55):
cast dogs see things that wedon't see that's always. Lovely
too, staring into a corner. So Iknow that there's things, yeah,
but whether it's the spirits ofour long lost love, I don't know
if I believe any of that.
I still really think it's aninter dimensional thing, and
(05:17):
they're just other people anddimensions that are bleeding
over, like, bumping into ourshit and being like, wait, that
was weird. Why did I trip up onthis thing that's not there,
right?
Because otherwise you have tosit there and think, Wait a
second, is this angry spiritjust in my kitchen all the time,
especiallylike, you're you've got a new
house, and you're like, nice.
(05:38):
When did you get here? Like, didyou come with an object, or did
you die here? Like, wait, wereyou in a field and had a heart
attack before this house existedand now you're stuck in my
kitchen or my pantry? Or what?
Like, what the Yeah, how doesthe logic work? My
dad, who is a full Haida Indian, his favorite thing to laugh
(05:59):
about is the ancient Indianburial ground trope, sure. And
he's just like, Kelly, theentire world is an ancient
Indian burial ground. If you goback far enough, so many people
have died in every part of thisthat, of course, the world is
haunted. I was like, well,that's a comforting thought. I'm
nine years old and going to bed.
(06:20):
Maybe they're all like cavemen.
Maybe they would just have allthese, like, really ancient
people who are just like, fucking light what? No, it's
dark demon.
Well, yeah, because then I'mjust like, what's going on in
this lady's kitchen? Right? Theguy threw a pot at her. Was it
just don't tell me to get out ofhere? Or was it I am offended by
(06:40):
your cooking, Chef or star chef.
Okay, guys, again, that's Jeffgould.net/paranormal,
common side effects.
Are you guys watching thisseries yet? Not
(07:01):
yet. No, I went past it andwent, that's that thing that
catched up on movies andstuff. Now that things are
getting a little more normal forme, this
is so damn good, and my onlycomplaint about it is that it's
not live action because it feelslike it should be live action.
Everything in it is veryrealistic, except for the
animation and then all the dramathat's happening in it. Now
(07:25):
there's some very minor comedy, and it's usually in the
characters quirks, but it's areally, really great story, and
it's going in places I wasn'texpecting. And I just love it.
It's, I guess it's on AdultSwim, but then HBO Max has some
kind of deal with them wherethey show it maybe the next
night or something. Isthat? Mike Judge, yes,
(07:47):
yeah. It is so good, I gottatell you. Listen, I know I shit
all over animation, sure, damn.
This is fantastic. If you'relike me and you think I'm not
gonna watch a cartoon, you'remissing out on something great
here with common side effects.
How many episodes in are they atthis point? They're at eight or
nine now, already. Wow. Okay, they're short. They're half hour
(08:09):
episodes. Okay, gotcha sowell, I sometimes I like
watching stuff that makes mecry, and I know it's going to
and I'm like, let's just dothis. I just need to, like,
detox my emotions. So I checkedout toxic town, which I think is
on Netflix, and it's about thisBritish town where a bunch of
(08:30):
kids started getting born withdeformities, and they were,
like, missing limbs and allkinds. Don't shake your head.
Why are you so mean to yourself?
I know it's basedon real stories, so it's all
real and yeah, and basically, the town was doing different
practices by building in newindustrial complex where they
(08:53):
were trudging up all this likesludge from previous place and
not disposing of it correctly.
And it was getting into the townsomehow, and into these women.
And then many, many, many womenin this town had deformed kids,
and then they took the town tocourt over it, and eventually,
(09:14):
spoiler one, but it's all aboutthat journey. So it's several
episodes, and it is Jesusdevastating. I cried a lot. But
good, good little story here, like way to go.
You know, way to go, ladies, episode, I referenced Chernobyl.
Maybe you should just check thatout. Oh, I've seen it. Keep you.
Keep your happy street going.
Watch again. Iknow, I know. I'm looking for
(09:35):
content. You know, that soundsgreat. Let's just throw in
Chernobyl. Go with what hewas talking about, toxic
town. I can't wait to neverwatch an episode.
I mean, it's cool. It's got thatAaron Brockovich vibe to it.
You're like, Yeah, fucking takethese assholes down. Yeah, screw
you guys. You think you can justget away with this shit? No, you
(09:58):
can't.
Oh, okay, we'll take. That, thatthat approach, that direction,
yes,no, it's not just depressing. It
is like kids being formed. No. Imean, the kids end up, you know,
they're fine, they get there. Soit's just things,
so it's a happy ending, is whatyou're saying. Yeah, flippers
for hands, but it's all good.
Don't quote me on that.
(10:20):
All right, so I went down alittle Oscar road. Check out
some of the ones I had not seen.
I figured I'd do the biggie andNora. Oh, I was in a situation
where I had to stop watchingafter about half an hour. I'm
going, Man, I don't know if Ilike this movie at all. Oh no,
the littleguy, Russian monster family in
the and the sex worker, yes, okay, the
(10:42):
the and that, that guy is adick, yeah, and deeply annoying.
I'm like, Okay, so the onlyreason you're falling in love
with a shithead is massivelywealthy, right? Okay, great, but
I did go back and finishwatching it, and as shit goes
wrong, it becomes a lot of fun.
It is a lot funnier than I wasexpecting, and it gets very
(11:05):
entertaining. I it's a stretchthat Oscar picked this one to
win, not because it's not a goodmovie, but it's like so in a
weird place for whatever Oscarsare anymore, but yeah, it was,
overall, is it ended up being apretty entertaining film. And
(11:26):
Have either of you seen it?
Yeah, I've seen it. No, Iwatched the trailer, and I was
like, Okay, I watched it.
I was like, Shit, yeah, let'ssee what this is.
It gets pretty good. Yeah, Ithought it was a fun,
entertaining film. It doessuffer. And maybe this is our
(11:47):
generational shit going on, butit seems like people making
movies now feel they don't needto make likable characters
anymore. They're more real. It'slike, well, you know, there's a
lot of likable people in theworld who have interesting
lives. You could follow. Youdon't have to be a keeping it
real dickhead thing of justkeeping, to me, keeping it real
(12:08):
doesn't mean just being anasshole, right? Keeping it real
means you say really good thingsabout people too, because that
happens a whole hell of a lotless than because we've been
raised in this reality show.
Thing of keeping it real meansbeing a dickhead, right? And
that the two leads of thissuffer from that a little bit.
She gets better, she goes along, but he doesn't. He gets worse.
(12:30):
He gets worse, which is theinteresting story. But yeah, I
thinkthat I didn't think it was a
twist, because I thought he wasa dick from c1 so I thought he
was like, advancement ofhim. I just thought he was young
and kind of naive and, like, youknow, super, super wealthy, but,
yeah, but like, exactly like,he's just being the entitled
(12:51):
whatever he is, but he genuinelywants out of his situation, and
so sees this opportunity, andshe also is like, Okay, this,
yeah, this sounds like a reallyinteresting change to my world,
that's for sure. But, you know,I think it's the other
characters that really, ofcourse, like, sell this, the
thug guy who ends up with somany more layers of you don't
(13:15):
think he's gonna even have aspeaking role
on the film. That guy who's justalong is the muscle, yeah. And
then you keep seeing him kind ofjudge the situation with his
eyes a little bit here andthere, and you're like, Huh? And
then you see him a little bitmore, like, saying things here
and there, like, um, why are wedoing this? Or, like, Oh, this
(13:37):
is gonna this is gonna be bad.
This is gonna be bad and likethat ends up being one of, I
mean, the one of the mostinteresting characters, because
you judge people on this certainlayer, and then you realize that
underneath he's got thiscompletely different complexity
going on. And I think with aNora, that's what's interesting
about her too, is she has thisbroad, explosive outer shell,
but underneath is like acompletely different human
(14:00):
that's just trying tosurvive. So by the end, it works
really well. But that first halfhours, it is
tough. It is tough. You're like, what's going on? But I was,
like, kind of mildly fascinated.
Like, this is a universe I knownothing about both of these.
Like, all right, take me on ajourney. That is a good point.
Nora, is that streaming now? Or,yeah, it's,
(14:21):
I think I watched it on Hulu.
Tell you there's good stuff onit.
Fuck Hulu, goddamn Hulu.
Let's see. What am I going totalk about here? I guess I'll
talk about, I'm just about donewith reacher. Oh, yeah, same.
AndI didn't want to watch him have
(14:42):
sex with that lady.
She looks like it'd be likecuddling up with a 10 speed
bike. She is all joints andbones, awful, awful
accent, and then she's a littlegirl friendly with them. And I'm
like. Don't be girlfriendy withreacher. Fuck you if he didn't
(15:03):
end up with the First Lady. Idon't want to see him with
anybody else long term. Okay, she was the only good one in my
book. Sowell, I I'm having a hard I
don't know what it is about thisseason that it is taking me so
long to get to every episode.
But then I watch it and I'mlike, oh, it's pretty good. But
then, even if I'm behind andthere's another episode
available, I'm like, I don'tthink I need two episodes in a
(15:25):
row. No, this one is, is notgrabbing me as much, and I hope
I'm not getting tired of thecharacter.
I don't think it's reacher. Ithink it's this plot, okay, such
a mobster, like, Oh, Ilike all of that kind of stuff,
though. It's just it doesn'tfeel very believable in any way.
No, it does not. Itsounds like you're the little
references. It sounds likebecause, you know, I went on the
(15:47):
thing where I was going to reada bunch of read your books, and
I hit one of them. I was justlike, and I haven't gone back. I
keep forgetting, because itshows what book this is based
on. It's a one word title, and Ican't,
is it because I hit whatevernumber that was in his early
like three or four be likethe third one. I think I really
lovehim. He is so great. You never
(16:13):
seen blood car or blood what wasit? Drive? Blood Drive? I think
it was, or he was the lead nolead guy. Okay, it is freaking
great. He's sofucking likable, like on screen
and off screen all hisinterviews, he's very likable,
and I think that probably helps, but, but for some reason, this
one is really difficult for me.
(16:37):
Yeah, I'm having the same issue.
I'm just I I'm not like, everytime a new episode pops up, I'm
like, Well, I'm obliged to watchthis. So I got nothing else
going on. I gotta be in bed inlike two hours, so Let's chuck
it on. Guess I'llwatch this. Adonis take off his
clothes. The bestpart by far. I mean, I just love
how, like, he's so smart, that'sthe best part to me is like,
(16:59):
somebody will just be like, thisdumb dude, and then he's like,
thought 1000 steps ahead ofeverybody. That's just such a
cool character trait. So yeah, well, reacher is on prime.
Gosh, well, I was gonna talkabout a comic I'm reading, but I
feel like I should talk aboutDaredevil in the most recent
(17:24):
episode.
Yeah, yeah, I've watched. Ithink I'm caught up as well.
Yeah.
I actually really liked the lastepisode, and I didn't have there
was only one editing thing thatbugged me the whole time, and
I'm very proud of myself foronly getting mad once when I was
like, when you stood up, itlooked like you were going the
opposite direction to thedirection you went. But that's
(17:49):
okay. Why are you walking away?
Oh, wait, I guess you arewalking towards it. Yeah. All
right, that's fine. Um, yeah, Ithought it was, it was pretty
good. I thought they did a goodjob on that one. So I like
it. I remember it was, I kind ofglossed over it. And then when I
was editing, you're coming aboutMarvel stuff. I'm not done with
Marvel. I'm just sort of likeaverse to there. We're going to
(18:10):
throw every character we've everhad into a movie and see if it
works. Because this Daredevilshow was, was it six, seven
years ago? I think it was on,yeah, all the people coming
back. Oh, yeah, I'm watchingthat. Yeah, yeah. I think it's,
you're right. It's really solid,yeah,
yeah. Another, another, reallygood episode. I so they bring
(18:31):
Frank Castle back, which wasnice. But then I read something
that said prior to Moorhead andBenson being involved, his his
appearance shows up way later inthe series, and I was like, no,
we want him back. Don't make uswait for Punisher. Yeah?
And the way this story is going,he needs to be there, yeah?
(18:53):
Because he the in the contrastof the two of them, especially
in that thing where it's maybewe're not as different as you
think. Yeah, maybe you want it abit. It's just like, fuck. That
was a greatthat was a great scene, a great
dialog in there. And then justwatching those two actors, I'm
like, Boy, these guys havereally embodied their
characters. You know, I don'tthink I could think of anybody
(19:15):
else playing the Punisher again.
No, I see the actor who playsDaredevil around, and he kind of
looks like he's blind, if hedoes that so well that it's kind
of his natural lookintentionally, you're not going,
Hey, you look like and from afilmmaker thinking storytelling
piece that end shot with him andthe kingpin juxtaposed,
(19:38):
realizing, okay, They reallystill are the people they've
always been. It's like, becausethat king bed thing was,
the guy was dead.
That is dark.
I was Yeah, I was like, Uh huh, look, and it's his special, like
(19:59):
Vanessa. The painting, and it'sgot the dude's blood on it or
whatever, like chef's kiss.
Yeah, good stuff. Oh, that's me.
The as I mentioned, the Oscarworld I watched another one,
highly recommended by freakingeverybody and flow, yeah, and
(20:24):
well, recommended by everybody.
What a lovely film. It is wild, especially knowing the making of
and it shows you know you cantell this was not a $50,000
computer making thesecharacters. This was a basic
computer that but thebackgrounds are spectacular
looking, and the characters doeverything they need to do. You
(20:49):
know, they don't need to looklike a perfect Fauci Disney
computer generated thing. Theylook more real and more
interesting, being just a littlefidgety at times and stuff, but
it's awesome. Yeah, I read aweird thing that it has actually
contributed to the adopting ofall black cats. Yes, people, all
(21:10):
black cats are just like othercats. They're all great. Black
Cats are awesome, but exceptthey're magic.
Magic in my heart and thethe depth that goes to at times
with, like, the scene of himrunning up the the tower things,
or whatever those were in thewater, just
(21:37):
incredibly good. Yeah, the winner of the everyone. So I
something, you know, Pixar. It'snot Pixar. It's not Disney. If
it's not either one of those twoyou it's probably something
truly spectacular. And Yep,definitely, if you haven't seen
it yet, there's a reason theybuilt a statue in the what was
the country this was made in?
(21:58):
The native country was made, andthey built a statue to this cat
already.
Oh, wow, damn right, is itLafayette? Is
that going to be the statue ofthe cat that he climbs up on the
water? Oh, my God, those big, big, big steps. Oh, my God.
So the thing that's sointeresting to me about this,
you know, I saw this, and Iloved it, but the UN spoken back
(22:23):
story is that some kind ofapocalypse has happened, that
there are no humans, because thecat is going back to its old
home. There's artisticrenderings of the cat inside it
and everything, but the personis gone, and there are no people
in this Yeah. So very strange.
And then, you know, like you hadmentioned, I think that
(22:45):
something apocalyptic hadhappened before this flood.
Because before this flood, we'realready seeing trees with boats
and shit.
Yes, exactly. You can see, likewater damage on the house the
cat's in and stuff too. So it's,it's happened before, and it's
happening in waves, but yeah, yeah, no. And I think it's neat
(23:05):
that you can't know becauseyou're seeing it through the
perspective of these animals. Sothere, there's no way they're
going to be able to tell youwhat has happened, and
they don't cheat by tossingsomething in the background that
would like tell you what's goingon. It's just, is what it is,
and the the moments of peril areso well done. It's like, got to
(23:31):
getback to the boat. I know, like
that, poor cat is gonna drownall the time. Did your Did you
watch it with volume on, and didyour cats respond to this? It's
apparently a big, big love of alot of cats.
Wow, yeah, they, I may have to,you know, put that on and I
(23:52):
would just put it onand see what they do. Yeah, I
definitely, my cats weredefinitely kind of getting up
looking what's going on overhere? All right? Well,
yeah, they did use real animalnoises for all the animals so
and I thought it was hilarious.
I can never remember exactlywhat they're called. That dog,
(24:15):
that shibulin, Oh, thatone's the asshole one that
was, they are real asshole dogs.
I mean,they, they're not, they're not
friendly, like other dogs, likethey don't, you know, they're
not happy to see you and comeover and shit like that. So when
they made him the asshole, I waslike, Yes, good.
(24:37):
Well done. Good casting. I likethat.
Cool. Well, yeah, that'savailable now for free. Max. Oh,
cool. I might watch that again.
I liked it so much, and that wascalled flow. So guys, why don't
we take a little break, and thenwhen we come back, we are
talking about a sub genre thatMicah picked for us. I.
(25:07):
Welcome back to Super Bowl. 57so far, Greg, the game going
like you expected. Yeah, and sofar, these teams, they've really
you.
(25:30):
And we're back. Okay, Eric, wehave decided that you're going
to start this off. Why don't youtell us what we're doing and
talking about, well, we got a guy, Micah, who
wasout little hint at how I thought
about my film, sort of made upfor suggesting we watch the GI
Joe animated movie. The idea washe sent us all a nice little
(25:50):
contribution to the ongoingneeds of strange eons radio and
in return, he suggested we eatspecifically gave each of us
movies to watch from Tubi, meaning they're probably a
little more obscure, they'reprobably a little unusual, and
that was where we launched. Sowe each took our films and here
(26:12):
we go. Allright. Well, how about I have
you start us off. I'm giving youfive minutes.
All right. Mine was 1965,the 10th victim.

(28:54):
no, I went to Tubi and it said,no longer available on this
platform. I I did get the fullto be experienced by finding it
on Plex with commercial closeenough. This is directed by Elio
Petre, who also directed a quietplace in the country we still

the movies he directed. RobertShockley also wrote. Was the
writer of the original book, which was called the seventh

time, there's a previous filmcalled The seventh victim.
(29:37):
They've changed it to 10. Alsowriting on this film, Antonio

whole shit load of items forthis battle. Actors, marcillo

It's just you. I'm just hearingthe ticking

which ties into Ursulines, Iguess you know, she was on two
episodes of The Love Boat, the1981 clash of Titans and the
Casino Royale as Vesper. That'sright, and another fairly famous
appearance in the James Bondfilm. This is a familiar town
sounding film for modernaudiences, but very original at

the time. This is 21st century, and legalized violence is
occurring. There's a big hunt.
The big hunt has four or fiverules. Each member undertakes 10
hunts. Five is Hunter. Five is avictim. Their pay. They're
paired up by computer. Huntersget all the info they need on
the victims. Victims get noinformation on the hunters. The
victim does the hunting once, but once they know who the
(31:11):
hunter is, they can legally killthe hunter report the winner
wins the money of a milliondollars, which translates to
about ten million in modernmoney. So it's a big payday.
Movie jumps right into theaction with a fantastic scene of
a hunter and victim, neitherwhich are the leads. They're
(31:32):
just giving you an idea whatthis movie is going to be about,
which then moves into the mostfamous scene from the movie. And
you might recognize, you mightthink of a movie the scene
probably influenced, and you'dbe correct, sort of a strip
fashion show event, kind of withUrsula dancing around and finds
her target is at this event. Soshe goes up to the target,
(31:56):
starts dancing a little bit, andshoots him through her bra. Oh,
this apparently was the mostfamous and mentioned movie, and
all or seen, and all the reviewsand all the stuff about this
film, and obviously AustinPowers influence. And then they
moved to the a very nice killingof a man who was dressed up as
(32:19):
an SS member, where they blowhim up. Excellent. All right,
the idea is that this game hasreplaced war. But irony is not
entirely lost on this film, ascene where a guy comes up and
kills one of his hunt hunties, and the police officer looks,
oh, man, your car is illegallyparked. Here's a ticket this,
(32:40):
I'm gonna say this is damn goodfilm. Micah, this is well,
recommended. It's got somestrange, surreal elements the
way it's time late coming intothe late 60s here, like the two
of the leads, the lead Hunter, the 10th victim, and her Hunter,
who at this time, she knows whohe is, but he does not who know
(33:02):
who she is. And they're talkingand behind them are these two
raised platforms, each with asaxophone player on it. One of
them kneeling down, playing thesaxophone. The other guy laying
backwards on the thing with hishead over the back, playing the
saxophone, just on this buildingwith them. There's this giant
scene that's sort of like JamesBond esque with a Q sort of
(33:25):
thing going on that happens inthe middle of it, Ursula. The
idea is Ursula for the 10thvictim. She needs to get him to
this one specific place inItaly, so the television cameras
can capture it, and they cansell ads to make a lot more
money. Shocking, it's a greatit's a great entertaining film.
(33:46):
It's a lot of fun to watchbecause it's weird. It does get
60 boring sometimes, you know, just the pacing is weird,
especially since an Italian filmproduction with English and
French. Let's see what anyinteresting facts here?
Obviously, this is one of thefirst films to do the reality
(34:09):
show death thing, which was donefrequently with like Battle
Royale series seven HungerGames, all following suit, said
in the year 1970 2079, so we sawhim and reached it. That's nice.
Kim Novak auditioned for thelead and Margaret was cast, but
then had to back out, so theyended up with Ursula, and
(34:32):
Margaret would have been aninteresting choice in this. And
Michael Myers references this asone of his biggest influence for
the Austin Powers was what goeson in this film. But so, yeah,
definitely worth checking out. Iwas, I haven't done it yet, but
I was going to look up. I wouldnot be a bit surprised to see
(34:54):
this on criterion or somebodylike that. I mean, it's not a
great movie, but it's. Uniqueand different enough that it
could be celebrated by somebodylike criterion, criterion or
vinegar syndrome. Oh,definitely, definitely criterion
Severan or something like that.
It's not a goofy film. It's apretty interesting, well made
(35:16):
movie, okay, man, I want towatch this. It's definitely not
as so bad. It's good kind ofthing. Okay, cool, very cool.
Okay,Vanessa, you want to go next?
Yeah,so Micah challenged me with a
very special movie called Makingcontact from 1985
(35:42):
growing up can be hell, especially when you're
different,when you're helpless. You
(36:03):
and alone, but now Joey is theman of the house and is under
attack. Watchout by supernatural forces you
(36:24):
he can't understand, but Joey be helpless for long,
because Joey's not aloneanymore. Anymore, making
(36:47):
contact and out of this world.
Adventure. I have, in fact, seenthis movie once before because
this is a very early RolandEmmerich joint. Oh, wow, yes.
Nice pick there when he wasliving in Germany. I actually
already had it on DVD, but I didwatch it on TV for the full
experience. Roland Emmerich, ofcourse, has 26 credits,
(37:09):
including what we recentlytalked about, 2012 also,
Independence Day, Day aftertomorrow, Godzilla, Stargate,
White House Down. Patriot,Universal Soldier is CO written
by Hans J Haller doesn't reallyhave other credits, and Thomas
Lechner does not have any othercredits, starring Joshua Morel,
who has no other credits. Thiswas definitely done with favors
(37:33):
and by bootstraps in Germany.
Although the budget actuallyisn't terrible, it's 1.5
million. So it's not like astudent film, but it's not like
a big blockbuster film. So thestory is insane. A boy's father
dies and he has a hard timeaccepting it. We see him sort of
(37:53):
talking to a photograph of himjust not being able to really
feel okay to move on. And thenall of a sudden, his toys come
alive, much like, I don't know, polsure guy store, oh yeah,
Close Encounters of the last guyToy Story. So no, not like
that. Okay, yeah, so yeah. Thenhis red phone rings, his red
(38:19):
plastic phone, and he answersit, and it's his dad. So he
starts talking to his dad, andhe starts having this, like
frequent conversation with hisdad. At the same time, he also
develops telekinetic powers. Heseems to be able to move things
with his mind. Is this a horrormovie in parts? I guess, yes,
(38:40):
kind of, is it an adventure? Isit a kids movie? Is it a horror?
Who's to say, you not me. I'mnot gonna make that decision. So
anyway, his dad is helping him.
He says, kind of move thingswith his mind. But it seems like
he's really doing it. Feels veryfire startery In some ways, but
anyway, then there's also thisdummy that comes to life out of
(39:03):
this, like old shack that's upon the hill. And I thought it
was on their property, but maybeit's not. It's the old Psycho
house, but it's an old shack, anold shack in the back of their
yard with a bunch of abandonedcars out. You're supposed to
believe it's just some nope, that's the fucking house, dude.
But anyways, it's fine. There'sa dummy in there. He comes
(39:24):
alive, and he starts tellingJoey that the phone is actually
an evil ventriloquist who hadbeen messing with him when he
was younger, the puppet. Soanyway, his mom and teacher, the
boy's mom and teacher want tounderstand more of what's going
on with this kid's telekinesis, because he doesn't hide it at
(39:45):
all, and a bunch of universityresearchers invade his house and
basically set up shop, much likeET Meanwhile, a bunch of bullies
from his school have decided totake him down. They create a
plan. Uh, while in the Psychohouse, and the dummy gets wind
of it, turns the house into alabyrinth of nightmares,
trapping them inside, Joey, along with his friend, go to
(40:08):
rescue them for some reason, while in there, he and the boys
must battle their worst fears.
And finally, Joey meets theghost of the ventriloquist who
tells him that they share thesame psychic link. And through
the ventriloquist slink, when hewas alive, he let in an evil
spirit that now inhabits thedummy that we thought was evil
(40:29):
the whole time. He must not showthis dummy any fear. He doesn't.
So door opens into heaven, andhe goes so he can talk to his
dad, and he dies. The fuckeveryone panics, and they bring
back his body, and he's in acoma, but also then dies, and
then lights start coming on, andtoys start moving around, and
(40:51):
he's back to life. And we end ona freeze frame of him looking
kind of confused in a bed, somaking contacts. Wow. I will say
this film was better than Iremembered. I ever thought it
was going to be unwatchable thesecond time, because the first
time it was like, What the fuckis happening? What is this?
You're like, man, you madestrides. It is a mix, of course,
(41:16):
of close encounters, poltergeistet seriously, Lucas could sue
the pants off them and win.
There's literally Darth. Vadercomes to life at one point and
walks around with Yeah, there isStar Wars paraphernalia
everywhere, flying ships on thesheets, everything. Fuck man.
It's so heavily inspired bySpielberg. The music is very
(41:38):
much like it. The one thing Iwill say that I hate about this
film, the set design is out offucking control. It is just
filled with junk everywhere.
This house has too many lamps atone point, there is a shot
where, no joke, I counted eightlamps in shots, not like
(42:02):
overheads, like, just lamps inplaces. There's like a goldfish
tank just on the side, for noreason. There's a bottle of
ketchup on a shelf. His room haslike, the most random American
shit in it, including, like, radio, like stickers and like,
just weird. And he's got, like,Sesame Street stuff, but also
(42:23):
Star Wars stuff. I'm like, Howold are you? The set designer
made this into a hoardersdelight. Like every shot. You're
like, I don't know what's wrongwith his family, but if I came
here, I'd be like, they arecrazy. The dubbing is also
pretty far off. You can tell itwas dubbed into English. Just a
couple of quick trivia things, because I'm sorry, it's just so
(42:43):
fascinating. Although the bulkof the film was shot in Germany.
Writer director Roland Emmerichsaid it in the United States and
shot it in English so that thefilm could be marketed
worldwide. The director came toStuttgart elementary and junior
high school on Robinson barracksin Stuttgart, Germany in the
spring of 1984 to selectAmerican kids to be in the movie
(43:06):
starting that summer, the leadrole in many of the friends in
the movie were selected fromthat school, not just the bit
parts. He also employed childrenof soldiers in the local US Army
base for bit parts. The scenewhere Joey is looking for his
dog Charlie in the abandonedmansion is very is set in the
base and the Bates Mansion Housefrom the 1960s horror thriller,
(43:29):
psycho. So it is literally thesame house. So basically, Roland
Emmerich said, I want to makeentertaining movies for a broad
audience. Germany needs a filmindustry. Again, making artsy
movies may be nice for the ego,but will not feed an industry.
Entertaining the masses is thefoundation, and that has been
(43:51):
neglected here for a long time.
People like Spielberg and Lucasare showing the way. We
shouldn't. Shouldn't we go inthe same direction. We can do it
too, and we can do it cheaper.
And he sure did. He built hisown effects studio in an
abandoned factory, instead ofusing a slightly more expensive
one down the road. So thatdelayed his overall production.
(44:13):
And he did end up scrapping mostof the effects and redoing them
again. So that is Wow, makingcontact. What year is this from
1985 85 okay? And he shot it inEnglish and then dubbed it
again. Thereis a weird dubbing effect. It is
shot in English, but you cantell like there's like a delay,
and it's not quite it, it seems,I mean, it feels very dubbed. So
(44:36):
I don't, I don't know quite whathappened there. I
recognized the poster, yeah, like a video store or something,
yeah, yeah. Ididn't remember that too, but I
did not realize that's what thiswas about. It's
bonkers. It's fucking bonkers. Idon't think this film knows what
it's about, but you know,America go America is what this
(44:58):
film is about. It is such a loveletter. To like, Fuck, I don't
know it's American. Put it inthe house. Seems cool. What do
kids do? They put little, youknow, at dinner time. We
definitely Americans have like,a little basket with bread rolls
inside, with, like, the littlething on top to keep it warm.
That's not just German. That'sAmerican too. Definitely, for
sure, it's cool. Spam. Yeah, wekeep our condiments always out
(45:20):
on our, like, living room shelf.
That's where I like to put him.
It's fucking weird. I lovethat. He was like, We need to
bring film making back toGermany, and then immediately
goes to Hollywood. He honestlywas
like, You know what? What's yourbudget on there? Yeah. He was
like, I could just be there. Iwas just want to be there
(45:42):
instead. So, all right, okay, making contact. Okay, I'm
giving myself five minutes, andI am talking about from 1985
pray for death. You.
(46:05):
Yeah, he came to America toescape his past. You will always
be a new job now his wife, hey,his children,
(46:26):
his home and his honor must bedefended. If you just want
protection, why don't you gohire yourself a private
detective?
No ordinary man could do italone,
but this is no ordinary man. Thepray for death. Scott far
(46:53):
enough. I ifwe are all free to do what we
like, I am free to kill thoseanimals. You showcasugi
(47:34):
shut a warringdanger judge and jury.
Vengeance will be his. Pray fordeath please.
Directed by Gordon Hessler, whohas 48 credits, including
(47:57):
murders in the Rue Morgue thegolden Voyage of Sinbad kiss
meets the Phantom of the part.
Hey, there you go. Oh yeah, yeah. Written by James Booth,
who has six credits, includingavenging force, American Ninja
two, the confrontation andAmerican Ninja four, the
annihilation. I want you toremember that name. It was
written by James Booth, starringshow kosuji, who has 19 credits,
(48:20):
including enter the Ninja,Revenge of the ninja. Ninja
three the domination, ninedeaths of the ninja. Ninja. Oh,
my God and the bad news bears goto Japan. Excellent. Second lead
in this film is James Booth, oh,who has 79 credits, including
Zorro the gay blade. He's theguy with the eye patch, avenging
(48:43):
force. American Ninja four, theannihilation and five episodes
of Twin Peaks. And also on thisis Norman Burton, a very
familiar character actor. 91credits, including fade to
black, which was famously put inmy freezer, blood sport and
American Ninja five. Eric, Iknow you've seen Yes, it's been
(49:05):
a long time, but I had seen itbefore, too, and I remember
liking it. So when I wasassigned this by Micah, I was
like, no problem. Yeah. So ninjamovie, yeah. I assume that's why
he assigned me a ninja movie. Ilove ninjas. The film starts
with a pretty hokey ninja versusninja scene, but it then pulls
(49:27):
back to reveal that we are whatwe are seeing is actually a
ninja movie. The two youngJapanese boys are watching. They
are the sons of Akira and Aiko,a Japanese couple who are making
the decision to emigrate fromJapan to the US. They have a
dream of opening a restaurantcalled Aiko. Is Japanese
restaurant, beautiful. It's alittle
(49:48):
on the nose. That's good writingabout this.
What his family doesn't know, though, is that Akira is, in
fact, a highly skilled ninja whohas retired after he had to
fight his brother to the dead.
Death when his brother tried tosteal from the ninja temple.
This bothered him so much thathe quit being a ninja and was
forced by his sensei to promisenever to reveal the secrets of
(50:08):
the ninja. He then gives him asacred ninja helmet as a gift
and reminds him that he cannever leave his shadows behind.
I was like, Okay, this is veryconfusing, but once in America,
Akira and his family meet withSam green, an old man who is
selling them the building thatwill become their new restaurant
and home. And guys, this placeis in a pretty shady part of
(50:29):
town, unbeknownst to them, butnotes to us is that the vacant
building has been used bycorrupt cops to hide the nearly
priceless van, a necklace forthe mobster they're working for.
But the cops have double crossedthe mobster and taken the
necklace for themselves. So whenthe mobster goons show up to
find the necklace gone and Samgreen the old man moving all of
(50:51):
his stuff out, they assume theold man has the necklace and
kill him when they don't findthe necklace, they now assume
that the new Japanese family hasit, and they kidnap one of Akira
boys and try to make Akira tradehim for the necklace. Well, this
goes as well as you think itwill, and even though Akira has
gone to the police and themobsters now think he doesn't
have the necklace, either, theydecide they've got to kill the
(51:14):
entire family because they knowtoo much. They do manage to run
down his wife and son in thestreet outside the restaurant,
but they are still alive andrushed to the hospital. Akira
then goes to the mobsters as aninja and tells them to leave
Akira and his family alone, orthey will pray for death. And
then he disappears. Well, heshould have just started killing
(51:36):
them all right, then, becausethey sneak into the hospital and
actually kill his wife? Oh,shit. So that brings us to the
third act, which is just a ninjabloodbath as Akira takes his
revenge on all of the mobsters.
This is actually a fairly decentaction flick. I saw it when it
first came out on video, 1986 orsomething. Cover, yeah, yeah.
(51:59):
It's the very classic cover ofthe ninja stance and then a
ninja in the background. Likethrowing stars all around all
that. Anyway, trivia, when thefilm was showcased at the con
Film Festival, it had a run timeof 123 minutes and was unrated,
following an X rating from theMotion Picture Association, the
film was edited down to 92minutes and awarded in our
(52:20):
rating. So there's a cut outthere with a half hour of ninja
action that was deemed tooviolent. Oh no. Akira sons are
actually played by the actors, two sons, Kane and Shane kosuji,
and their names in the film areTakeshi and Tomoya, which are
(52:41):
the boys middle names in reallife? Oh, that's nice. The film
was a modest hit at the boxoffice, bringing in 9.5 million
against the $5 million budget.
That was supposed to be asequel, but it never happened.
Although, if you watch all ofShoka sujis movies, they feel
like they're all the same seriesanyway. So I kind of didn't
realize that they weren't asequel. And then finally, the
the nearly priceless van attanecklace is a reference to Don
(53:04):
van atta, who is the producer ofthe film. In that
night he gave us money.
Here's the necklace, much asMicah did, and we are now doing
this episode in honor of him.
Truly excellent. It was well, well picked
man, yeah, I'm glad thateverybody had a good time with
him. Yeah,I was amused by, not by the
(53:25):
review itself, but should I pullup the movies when you guys are
talking about just in case wespeed bump ourselves at some
point? And some guy's reviewwas, I am to be six out of 10,
and his headline is three out offive,
my movie for your movie foryours? Oh,
(53:46):
okay, sure. Well, he look at heknows his fraction. He
did, did mathematically hitthat. My god,
okay, guys, that means that itis now my choice, yes, for a sub
genre so exciting. And I amthinking, How do you guys feel
about atomic monsters? Youand your atomic monsters,
(54:09):
you know, some kind of creaturefeature where radiation is the
cause? Yeah, no, that soundsawesome.
Revisit, which is great. I loverevisits. Listen giant monster
movies.
I've got a very limited amountof types of films, I know. I
just typedout 317 for the number of his
issues, I'd say for the numberof revisits, we have pretty good
(54:29):
ratio. I justrevisited disaster, so it's
fine. Listen, that was either this or ghosts.
That might be my next pickbecause of joffreys, I think
even our listeners at this pointwill not remember us having done
(54:50):
that before. SoMicah here will release our list
able to go you already talkedabout that in episode 125,
I hope we have no. 30 aboutstuff,
I would not have a problem withthat. So radio active creatures,
yeah, or atomic monsters, Ilike.
(55:13):
That's cleaner.
Sounds more 50s. That's whatwe're talking about. Okay, you
guys. Is the part where we saythanks to everybody, especially
somebody like Micah, who threw aton of money at us and asked us
to do this. He also took all ofthe thought out of it, so he
just ascended his movies. And Iwas like, this perfect. This is
perfect. Whether I like thismovie or not. I have to watch
(55:33):
it. I can do with that. You cando that. We call that value for
value. We have a bunch ofdifferent ways you can donate
