Unknown (00:00):
The worst, though, is
when the cat wakes you and you
know that they have like a bowlfull of food.
Oh, I'm sorry, did I break yourconcentration
somewhere between science and asuperstition.
(00:23):
We have such sites to show you.
Strange eons. Welcome tostrangeeons radio. That is Eric
over there, hello, and that isVanessa over there, hello, and I
am Kelly, and we are all inperson, which is how I would
(00:43):
prefer it? Hell, yeah.
Definitely better. It is better.
Yeah. Eric had something hewanted to talk about, though I
did what do? It's a it's a new, stupid level for of AI, okay.
I was looking through some mediathing, and somebody I saw this
post said, what if you couldadjust the camera angle? And it
(01:04):
looked like it was in theoriginal. And this idiot had
chosen stalker by Tarkovsky, oneof the single great films, art
films ever made, oh my God, anddecided he could do better
camera angles than Tarkovskycould. Oh, interesting. What it
is there were is like threedifferent shots, and one of them
(01:26):
was the main guy standing therewith somebody behind him. But
then when they added the goaround shot, the guy standing
next to him disappeared. I'mgoing, Well, that didn't work.
And the other one is, there's avery pointed image of these two
children in this grouping ofarrows and stuff that are all
pointing down to them, kind ofmaking a point. And I guess they
felt they could belabor thepoint by making the outside rim
(01:50):
spin.
I forgot what the other one was.
But first of all, they did notlook seamless. They did not look
like they belonged in the movie, even if you hadn't seen the
movie, but if you had seen themovie and watched a lot of
Tarkovsky, which I have gone, Ithink Tarkovsky knew one, what a
Dolly was. And if you wanted adolly shot, guess what he did.
(02:12):
One, it's not like he never usedthe dolly shot. He certainly
did. It's not like he never usedmoving shots. The sci fi one we
mentioned earlier, Solaris.
Solaris, he has a massive movingshot in that that goes on
forever, and it's just it to me,it hit me about the same level
as Ted Turner in the 80s, withI'm going to colorize
(02:35):
Casablanca. It's like, first of all, colorization looks
like shit.
Second, No, don't. You don'tneed to do that to a classic.
It's bad enough with the remakesand stuff, if they're not done
well, but to just look atoriginal and just do that and to
think you're improving it. Whatis this on? Was this on YouTube
(02:58):
or, like, where did they postit? I don't know if it was
Instagram or some AI heavything,
but, oh, it hurts my soul. Itwas actually and it was a couple
weeks ago that I saw it. Thiswasn't just recently it, but it
just stuck with me and just satthere going so, so many things
wrong with the thinking it'slike, the biggest problem. I
(03:19):
think,I think that a lot of kids who
grew up more on Marvel moviesand stuff, and in this era, when
they're watching older movies, feel the camera always needs to
be moving. Because nowadays it'salways moving. It doesn't matter
what the movie is. But, yeah,it's just like, No man, come on.
Wow. Oh, that's truly awful.
(03:41):
I've kind of gone in theopposite direction, where I've
started communicating with chatGBT, which I'd never done
before, but I was trying tofigure out I had a bunch of
plant questions, and I keptgoogling it and going deeper and
deeper into weird like plantwebsites and plant communities
(04:02):
and getting all this, like, contradictory information.
And I asked some people onFacebook about some stuff, and I
got some real weird, mixedresponses. And so I started,
like, what it was very weird. Iwas like, I do not want to plant
this one specific plant, towhich somebody said you should
plant this one specific plant.
I'm like, you fucking did notread my post. No, don't respond,
(04:24):
please. Just saw the headline.
Oh, my God. So I just startedtalking to chat GBT because a
therapist friend of mine wastalking about how she uses it as
a tool. And I was like, I don'tknow. I'll fucking talk to it
about and it was really helpful.
And I was like, You know what? Idon't need Facebook. I have my
own friend now.
(04:44):
Just hang out with chat. GBT, wecan have a nice conversation. Do
that on Instagram. Like forreal. Have you seen those when
you're scrolling every once in awhile, it's like, did would you
like to chat with,I don't know, a filmmaker, or
some generic term.
Yeah, oh, can you click on itand it's a interactive AI, it's
(05:05):
very weird. Whoa, uncomfortable.
Well, that that requires me tobe on a social media platform,
which I feel like I'm justgetting further and further away
from. Join me. I know,day Exactly. It's a little
easier for me, because I havebecome absolutely cutthroat with
(05:25):
blocking people. It's just notworth the time. Literally
hundreds of people on freaking Xbecause, yeah, that's easy. A
bunch of people, some people onInstagram, and finally started
to do a lot of people onFacebook. I don't care. Yeah, I
do have two good things though,we got our first text message.
Oh, nice.
(05:49):
And David was gave us a nicedonation. Oh, then is he the one
who texted as well? No differentpeople, I think. Oh no. He's the
same person, okay, but his, his note on the
donation was long overdue forall the episodes I've enjoyed.
Thanks for all the greatlistening. Oh, thank you, David
and his text message, Hey Kelly,Eric and Vanessa. David here,
(06:13):
I'm a long term listener. Firsttime texter. You're the first,
first ever. We shall engraveyour name upon our mics in your
honor.
I've been meaning to reach outfor a while, and as I just
finished listening to youratomic monsters episode and you
covered three of my personalfavorites, that's pretty cool,
(06:35):
this seemed like a good time todo. So I've been a fan of Kelly
since he was a regular paneliston the Lovecraft it's been great
to follow this podcast and getto know you all. Keep up the
good work, everybody. Fun. Fact,my ex used to call me H man
whenever I got a cold sore,I am stealing that
(07:00):
fantastic David, thanks forthanks for reaching out and
thanks for listening to theshow. That's amazing. I
appreciate that and thedonations. Yeah, that is always
really, really well appreciated.
Eric, you have some news on ourfilm, the connoisseur? Yeah,
we've got we were selected bythe Seattle Film Society to
scream in their screen, screamand their locals only. It'll be
(07:24):
the connoisseur, along withthree other shorts, bubblegum
bench October and ensuredomestic tranquility.
I think it's a two hour and ahalf or two hour event. They
show the things and then thefour of directors from those
four shorts will sit and answerquestions for a while. And it's
(07:47):
pretty cool, because it'sinvite. Like I said, it's invite
only, so it's going to be at theNorthwest film forum if you're
in the Seattle area. I thinkit's $15 to attend, but should
be 7pm that night, and yeah, QA, and wrap up at nine. So it's
a two hour event. Plenty ofgood, fun stuff to do, and
(08:07):
Northwest film forum is prettycool. What a cool place. What
was that? Date again? April 23april 23 Okay, cool. That's very
cool. Yeah, be selected one offour films selected for
something like that. That's veryneat. Yeah, they do one every
couple months or something likethat, and it's just all
picked out invites. So I got aemail two or three months back
(08:31):
that said, Hey, can you get usyour short for us to check out?
Oh yeah, so, and this is theresult. Wow, that's so cool. Oh,
my gosh, yeah. Oh, is it goingto be filmed or anything? The Q
and A, I don't know. There'ssome post like little mic
interviews or whatever. I knowyou've seen those with the
(08:53):
somebody's got these tiny littlemics. They're always like the
mariners do em all the time, ora few other places I've seen so,
okay, I don't know if that's alarge group or everybody's just
calling them that, right, nice.
Okay, well, let's get down towhat we actually talk about
here, which is movies we'vewatched. And I don't think I
have talked about that. Ifinally saw the monkey. No, he
(09:17):
did not. What did you think Iliked it cool. I didn't love it
it.
I think I fell more on Eric'sside of it, in that it tonally,
was all over the place. But Iwas like, I wish this was
funnier if they were going to befunny, or I wish it was scarier
(09:39):
if they were gonna be scary. Butoverall, I thought it was pretty
good. The acting was all fine.
The monkey itself was great.
Some of the shots of like, whenit was looking at its eyes in
the dark, I was like, wow, thatis really cool looking. And,
yeah, overall, I thought it was.
(10:00):
Is some pretty good fun. There'sa stab at the end with the
cheerleaders and the bus that Ithought was wildly out of place
and a really bad effect and abad way to end the film. It was
very random. Yeah, that wassuper random. But other than
that, I was entertained. Did nothate it. Nice. Nice. That's what
(10:23):
you want our movie, at the leastfor Stephen King adaptation,
yes. Good point. I would saythat it falls on the plus side
of those. Oh, yes. So that's themonkey that is available now to
stream as a rental. Oh, cool.
Well, the movies have been kindof sparse lately, like the
theater. So I went ahead andwatched black bag, which is not
(10:45):
something I would normally seekout, which is a recent Steven
Soderbergh joint. It's sort ofspy versus spy married to each
other. Situation.
It was, it was really good. Itwas like a nice little sort of
almost, who done it mysterysetup. It's actually kind of
(11:06):
smaller spaces than you'd thinkin the trailer. It's, it's
centered around, initially, thisdinner party where a bunch of
people within an agency areinvited because the lead guy has
been asked to find out who hasturn coded in their agency and
is going to potentially set offa big device or do something
(11:26):
that's going to kill a lot ofpeople. So he invites them all
to dinner and slips in a truthserum into the curry.
Just turns out that everyone'ssort of sleeping with each other
and has all kinds of problemswith each other, and so a lot
more kind of comes to light, andthen he's got to parse through
that and figure out what'shappening between going to work
(11:49):
each day and how things areplaying out there, versus weird
messages he's getting weirdindividual conversations he's
having, and then therelationships everybody have
with one another. So it was, itwas just like a fun, easy, easy,
breezy, who done it movie? Isit? Is that a rental, or is I
saw in theater? So I don't knowif it's available yet, but if
(12:11):
it's a free thing, then I'd say,go for it. Like I don't know if
I'd pay for it, unless you'rereally into that kind of thing.
The trailer looked really cool.
Yeah, yeah, I would say it feltsmaller scale than the trailer
led me to believe, but it hadmore talent in it than I
realized. Like, there are a lotmore actors in there that I was
like, Oh, you're in this. Oh,okay, you're you're in this,
(12:32):
like, Pierce brosnans in it.
It's like, Oh, hello, there youare. So, yeah, I don't know. I
enjoyed it a lot. I was reallyglad that I checked it out. But
you know, I guess maybe I'm notthe right audience to be the
person who like goes forth andis like, I'm not the Agatha
Christie Pluto, whatever person.
So, okay, okay, wow. Black bag.
(12:56):
Black bag.
That's a new one to shutterone of those drop in. Let's
check it out from this year,Shadow of God. I have heard of
this one. It's another exorcismmovie, but it goes really
different places.
(13:20):
I'll keep subtle, keep littlequiet, because it really goes
some weird places and does someinteresting ideas for an
exorcism film. I it's one ofthose I'm watching going, I
can't tell if I really like thisor if I just find the idea very
intriguing, but the lead guy,Mark O'Brien, is really good
place I preach, who's thepreacher who's doing an
(13:43):
exorcism, and the guy, he's thecity opening scene, is working
with, gets killed, and he gets acall from the home office. He's
like, don't talk about this, butsix of our exorcists have been
killed tonight. Oh, like he'sgonna go and find out what's
going on,and runs into his supposedly
dead father. Oh, so it's, it wasinteresting, and I do enjoy
(14:07):
where it went. I'd be curiousafter you guys see it. If you're
like, that was just silly morph, you're like, Okay, that was a
nice, interesting twist forexorcist films. Is that foreign
or no?
No, it's, it's in English. But Idon't think it's Canadian or
(14:29):
Australian. I'm pretty sure, oh,God, that sounds very cool,
actually, yeah, yeah, that's agood title. Yeah, very strong.
That's Canadian. It's Canadian.
Them, Canadians.
Okay, well, I did see a newmovie called Novocaine. Oh, my
god, wow. Okay, how is it?
(14:52):
It's fine, okay, I watched thefirst trailer, the first time I
saw the trails, like, oh shit.
Then the second time, going.
Yeah, so this looks fun, and Ilike that lead actor so much
that I'm like, I hope it doesreally well. He's, he's very
good, cool. Thethe problem, I think, with it is
it's kind of a wacky premise, and that he feels no pain, and
(15:14):
so he's going to be fightingthese guys, and he's really not
equipped to deal with them, buthe's almost super powered,
because they can't really hurthim. But with that kind of
premise, you want it to be alittle wackier, and it's almost
treated seriously. And, I mean, there's, there's a good level of
(15:35):
humor going on, but I felt theentire time, like I wanted it to
be just a little bit more. Itreminded me of the movie.
Nobody, oh yeah, I like thatone. I did too. And I was like,
Wait a second, this is remindingme of this, but I remember
loving that movie and this one,I was so, so on. So, you know,
your mileage may vary. Jack, wait is really good. I like him
(15:58):
in it, but he he was lookingpretty weird in this, really,
because of all the damage he wastaking. And some of the damage
he was taking was prettygruesome. He just looked very
thin and drawn. And I was like, okay, buddy, I want you to stay
healthy now, sandwichis his character. He didn't seem
(16:24):
like his character is a greatdeparture from what he plays in
the boys. Well, I think that'sjust his delivery of everything
he's he's a banker, okay, soand, and he's slightly
embarrassed because he knows hehas this issue. And so somebody
asks him out that he's kind ofgot a crush on and he goes out
with her, but for a meal, butall he gets is milkshake. And
(16:48):
then he starts telling her, youknow, I can't chew on anything
because I might bite my tongueoff and I wouldn't feel it, and
I joke on it. And this is how hestarts telling the story of what
is happening. And I was like,oh, that's kind of a wild thing.
Yeah. So yeah, it's, it's okay.
It's called Novocaine. And inthe in the story, can he just
(17:10):
not feel pain, but he can feeleverything else? Well, not
necessarily they it doesn'tfollow a lot of great rules,
because he, he doesn't feelpain. He does have sex with this
girl, and he's having a goodtime there. But I was also like,
okay, not feeling pain only getsyou so far. If you've taken a
(17:32):
bunch of head blows, yeah, youmight not hurt, but you're going
to be out bleeding a lot. Sothat kind of stuff, huh? And is
that out for streaming at thispoint? Rental. Okay, cool. Very
cool. Well, I was just trying tofind something to watch the
other day that was very lowrisk.
(17:53):
So through on I've never watchedit on shutter, hell health, Hell
House LLC, and they justreleased the Director's Cut.
It's in the carousel on the top.
I have no idea how it differsfrom any other cuts. No, there's
like, four of them out. I think, yeah, there's four. Yeah,
there's definitely four. I thinkit's okay. No, four movies,
okay. I think it's an okay, oneof the better found footage
(18:16):
films. I don't know if I need tosee the directors cut. I think
they have, from what I read inthe synopsis, has eight
additional minutes, so hold onto your pad.
Yeah, it was, you know, I likedthe characters. I like the
setup, I like the general idea.
I think that that all workedreally well. But then once they
(18:37):
started explaining what washappening. You start seeing what
was happening in this house. Iwas like, this, this is stupid,
like the directors, because Idon't remember them explaining
that much in the originalthere's a lot of like, little
hints here and there and then, and the last 10 minutes, you see
so much like, you see a lot ofthese shapes and people, and,
(19:02):
you know, kind of roughly, youcan fill in the blanks very
easily. And I think it's alittle hokey and a little, I
don't know, it's just kind of adumb I think they it would have
been better served if they'd letit, left it much more vague and
not had like, a stinger of like, and it's still out here. Oh,
well, yeah, three more movies I know
(19:26):
exactly. I don't even know whatthose are going to be about,
because I don't know how thatcompany exists after the first
one, surely they went bankrupt.
Now, like, how do you transferthat legally? Like they're all
dead.
Usually an LLC has provisionsfor if the deaths of all the
(19:47):
members happens. There's usuallyverbiage put into LLCs for that.
So hopefully I'm gonna have towatch the rest, probably in
October, and find out just howthe legality of this works out,
because that's my biggestquestion.
Because we'll answer that. Itwon't just be like and then
three years later, it was backin the public domain, and
somebody else bought it.
(20:10):
Explain to me how a low budget, self financed, self distributed
film is not the Director's Cut.
Right off the bat, I also wascurious about this. I was like,
so who is, like, really pressingyou in the direction you didn't
want to go the first timearound? Who is like, sticking
their thumb on you going, like,Nope, no. Artistic creativity
for you, sir. I gave you$100,000you're not going to go there. I
(20:33):
gave you $100that's sort of like for me,
like, I really enjoyed DonnieDarko, yeah, there is a
director's cut which I havenever watched because people
said it explained about half.
It's like, you know what? Youknow what I liked about Donnie
Darko, yeah, it was leftambiguous. There is just like,
(20:53):
I'm good. Literally, one scenein the Donnie Darko Director's
Cut that's helpful, because itbridges the gap between two
other scenes where you're like,Wait, why is this couple like,
why are they mad at each otherin the scene? That's like, the
only useful thing is, you seehow they, like, get into this
argument. Everything else. I waslike, I know, please. There's
also strangeness. Like, youknow, buffet films Amadeus, and
(21:15):
they did a director's cut yearsago, and that was the only one
available until January, whenthey released the theatrical cut
with the notification that thiswas never the director's cut,
the director we did not like theDirector's Cut. It was released
without his authorization. Socrazy, yeah, but so they finally
(21:37):
released that, which I think issuperior. There's some real
problems in the director's cut,but you just never know.
Maybe somebody came along andsaid, nice to add some shit.
Totally Hell House LLC, that'son shutter,
all right. I saw one totally, very different than we've talked
(21:58):
aboutSing. Sing, which I believe is
an Oscar nominee for something, but I don't know what, but it's,
it's really good. It's a reallyit's a feel good prison movie.
You know, you don't get a lot ofthose. Every once in a while you
get a Shawshank Redemption. Butthis is much more low key. It's
(22:19):
based on a true story of a groupof prisoners who formed a
theater group in Sing, sing, andthey put on,
they did some Shakespeare, andthen that this one time they're
sitting around, they'restarting, they're pitching for
what their next one will be, andthey just throw these crazy
ideas. So the guy who is not aprisoner, but is like, helps
(22:42):
them run the program, says, I'llgo out and I'll write a
storyline to fit everything.
You're going to get time travel, you're going to get Freddy
Krueger, you're going to getpirates, all the stuff you want.
And he goes and he writes thisplay.
The group was calledrehabilitation through the arts
and incredibly successful. Ibelieve the lead character in
(23:05):
the movie is not is afictionalized character, you
know, amalgamation of a bunch ofcharacters, but most of the
actors are prisoners, actualprisoners. The credits at the
end, end with so and so playedby themselves, and it's all
interesting, all themselves. SoI looked up and said, Yep, those
were not necessarily, maybe notcurrent, but some current and
(23:28):
some former prisoners, wow. Andit's insanely well acted for a
movie with very low budget, andthe budget leaks on the scenes
at times, and you know, some ofthe prisoners are,
it's obvious they're not actors, but they they encompass their
role well enough they understandwhat they're doing well enough
(23:48):
that it really works. And thelead is just charismatic. It's
all hell like this guy needs todo a lot more stuff. He is. It's
what was his name. It was,I closed the wrong door.
Where'd he go? But he is,he the one who makes story
lines? Is there's two guys. Oneis the guy who started it, and
(24:10):
then this other guy comes in,who is more prison tough. So
they kind of conflict, but thenthey end up becoming incredibly
good friends. Coleman Domingoplaced the lead. And just
phenomenal. He was in Lincolnand Selma and euphoria. So been
in a lot of stuff. What we'reseeing, if you kind of want, you
(24:33):
know what I need, a feel goodprison film
some, sometimes, yeah, sometimes, that's exactly what
you need Sing. Sing, what's thaton it was, I believe it was a
HBO or max, or whatever the hellthose things are. I know I was
go the wrong one was this, yousaid Oscar nominate. Is this a
(24:55):
new movie from like, last yearor last year? Okay, I have not
even heard of this one. Yeah.
I remember hearing a little bitabout it, and it sounded like
people were really loving it,but I just assumed it was, like,
a dark, intense indie film. AndI was like, I can't, I can't
take it. I'll be honest, I waslooking because I was interested
in it too. But you know how IMDbhas those content things? I'm
(25:16):
gonna look up and see ifthere's, like, any rape scenes
in this. And I just don't feellike watching something that
intense, and there's nothing.
It's probably our rated forlanguage, but yeah, I was on max
and for rent on other places.
Fantastic. All right, thatsounds cool, guys. How about we
take a little break and thenwhen we come back, we are
talking about animals.
(25:37):
Sure. Okay, youcan anything stop the animal?
The animal is a big, powerfulfour by four, but when the going
gets tough, it bears its clawsto climb over things that get in
(25:59):
its way.
The animal drawing its way tothe top. The animal needs sold
separately, batteries notincluded, new from Galoob,
(26:26):
and we are back, Eric, this wasyour sub genre pick. What are we
talking about? Talking aboutanimals, you know, if you wanted
to do Air Bud orsomething like that, sure. But
either animals are pets, whatever we're just chilling
having some fun, watching someweird shit, nice and generic. I
appreciated that youwant to go first then Eric
(26:48):
diving infive minutes, all right.
My movie was rats. Night ofterror.
Rats. What do they want from us?
Rats? Why are they man's enemyrats? They are watching, waiting
(27:16):
rats, that time hascome. Why do rats repel us? What
is it about those little furrybodies that's so frightening?
Just thinkthey're here. They're coming.
God, no. Who could stop them andhow
(27:41):
rats are here under our feet, all around us.
Come on out in the open so I cansmash into pieces. Come to the
slaughter. Strange rat fromanother community came into it,
soon killed, andthat's what's eaten. See The
teaming millions their littlered eyes gleaming with rage and
(28:03):
hunger. I don'twant to die like that.
(28:26):
The last time I warned you, Dropthe guns. Kurt go on. You'll
never get away. You two, movethat console and barricade
yourselves in. No, I'll try tostop them. You
(28:52):
rats, they're waiting for younight because this is your night
of terror. Comethe room. Rats a Bruno mate
joint,which about 20 minutes in. I
realized this was one of theearly ones I watched with him.
From him I'd already seen it.
(29:14):
But this is the new Severnremastered and re released with
an insane number of extras for amovie by this filmmaker, but I
love it. BRUNO matte, you mightknow from island of the Living
Dead, Terminator two and jawsfive.
He also was there's anotherdirector listed, Claudio
(29:37):
frugasa, who is known for thestellar hell of the Living Dead
and troll two, oh, boy. So youknow, powerhouse is coming
together to create written byRosella drew D who worked with
the both directors quite a bit,and also both the directors are
listed as contributing writers, starring Octavian del aqua,
(29:59):
who's in 30.
Coins. Enough killer. John Wicktwo, 327
stunt credits, whoa, and thatshows up a little bit some cool
stuff. Oh, nice. Goretta guretawas in Terminator two demons buy
and sell Massimo van I, whosegangs in New York and Robo war
(30:20):
and Strike Commander two. He isalso over 100 stunts in movies.
So he went stunt guy heavy. Sothis is a in the world named in
the period of the world afterthe bomb. So, you know, instead
of BC, it's now a, b, Oh, okay.
People live in kind of aseparate kind of have, have,
(30:42):
have not worlds, which theyreally don't get too much into,
and you're pretty much in thehave not world the whole time.
And looks like a 1980s postapocalyptic film. If you've seen
any of the ones that were nothigh end budgeting, you know
exactly what this movie lookslike, strangely altered cars,
(31:02):
motorcycles that are completelyimpractical and kind of punk
esthetic.
Vincent, directed by Vincent Dawn, is in
the credits, but you know, we know it wasn't
him.
Also got weird guns, leather boylooks colorful scars, a guy who
(31:26):
looks like he's straight out ofthe TV show Kung Fu for some
reason, or one of the Mooneyguys that used to have in the
airport years ago. And womenwith headbands and weird outfits
that make no sense, nice, but all it is are starving and
stuff. So, you know, in thegrand tradition of starving
people in movies like this, theyfind a huge staff of food and
then immediately go into let'sthrow the food all over the
(31:49):
place and have food fights likeI don't think that's what they
covering themselves in flower.
Let's hold back.
I do love part of what I likeabout Bruno movies is they often
make absolutely no sense.
They're set up and blockings themovements. There's a weird shot
(32:10):
where somebody shoots a gun andeverybody reacts like they heard
the gun, and they're just aroundthe corner and they're gonna go
see what's happening, and theygo around the corner. It's a
completely different part of thebuilding, nowhere near where the
gun was going off,but bottle of J and B does show
up. So, you know, he'srecognizing his Italian roots,
although the label was tapedover because apparently this was
(32:33):
so low budget they couldn't usethat. And so the whole idea is
the rats are intelligent. Therats go on the attack with
organized and effective attacks, all different depending on the
situation. So will they survivethe night? And
(32:53):
yes, unfortunately, the film didhave some animal cruelty.
Some rats were killed andcontinued to be used in the
movie, you actually can see oneor two of them, like there's one
of the dead ones. Oh boy, ohGod.
When goretta was asked ifClaudio actually directed
anything, she said, Hell no, Ihear the same crap regarding
(33:16):
Dario and lumberto When we wereall on demons. Is that really
talented people like Bruno allowother people to have opinions,
chime in, come up with stuff, but rats is Bruno's film.
Good for you, Bruno.
View some sets from SergioLeone's once upon a time in
America, which had deterioratedon their own. It was that time,
(33:40):
distance, and they're just leftto rot. This was featured on
rift track, which is, you know, fine, and
Greta took the role after herroommate turned it down.
See, this is her second filmmade in Italy. She didn't speak
Italian, and it showsbut so it's, it's fine. If you
(34:00):
know Bruno matte, you knowexactly what you're getting in
for it looks ridiculously good.
Oh, it does. Oh, man, it'sSeverin. So they just remastered
the hell out of it. I mean, looking good is relative the the
film print looks probably likeit did originally. I'm sure it's
not like the photography is notslightly stellar, no, it's like
(34:25):
the cell or something. We shouldprobably know you kept saying
Terminator two, but it is not,no Cameron's Terminator two. It
is not Jaws, five, nocruel jaws. But I forgot what
Terminator two one is called, but it's something completely
different, yeah, but yeah, cruel Jaws got in
(34:46):
trouble when seven release itnot too long ago, and they had
to stop putting out the it was acover sleeve that said Jaws two.
The inside was cruel Jaws, right? You got in trouble for
that one. You.
But this had to be from your ownpersonal collection. Look,
(35:06):
someone's got something I wantto get. Oh, Bruno mate's got
one.
Vanessa, how about you go next?
All right. So I went with a filmhad not seen before, which is
1997 the edge. You're the saltof the earth. You're the most
excellent man. That's why Imarried you.
(35:27):
And you're the only woman I'veever wanted see the lucky guy.
You are a billionaire who haseverything he wants to
a good companion, a good friend, did a good sport, got it. Okay,
great. A photographer who wantseverything he has nice looking
lady, your wife, yes. Why'd you ask?
Just like to know who everybodyis.
(35:53):
Must be tough. All that money ofknowing what people value you
for, what you value me for, Bob,I think your wife's pretty cute.
So are you planning to kill me.
(36:16):
Now, two rivals lost in thewilderness
are forced to confront nature.
What are we gonna do? Am Isupposed to have a plan?
But they're about to discovernature isn't as dangerous as the
nature of man.
(36:38):
Academy Award winner AnthonyHopkins, you want to die out
here, I'm not gonna die.
Alec. Baldwin, money folk, situp there. Drink some golf. You
make me sick. Where civilizationends, survival begins.
The Edgea pretty big movie, to be
(36:59):
honest, starring AnthonyHopkins, 154 credits, such as
silence of the lands west world,we talked about Elephant Man on
the show. Alec Baldwin, 161credits, Glen and Gary Glen.
Ross, 30 rock and up and coming.
Film, rust coming to a theaternear you. Man, you pulled the
(37:20):
nice Glen, Gary, Glen, Ross andthen
doom. Anyway, Harold perinau isplaying Steven. We would know
him from, from also is in Ozlost Romeo. And Juliet is
Mercutio, which I was like, ohshit, okay. Well, it's all
coming together now. And ElleMcPherson, the actors, model
(37:41):
from Batman and Robin is in thisdirected by Lee tamahiro, who
has 15 credits, including TripleX day of the Union, next and Die
Another Day, written by DavidMamet, who has 53 credits,
Glengarry, Glen Ross wag thedog, the untouchables, Hannibal,
etc. And of course, also stare, starring Bart the bear as the
(38:02):
bear, 21 credits, including thegreat outdoors On Deadly Ground,
Homeward Bound, and 12 Monkeys.
This story follows billionaireCharles Morse, who's
accompanying his wife, Mickey, amodel, to a photo shoot on a
remote Alaskan resort. They areaccompanying her photographer,
Robert and his whole team ofassistant stylists, other
(38:25):
photographers, et cetera. Whenthey arrive at the remote Lodge,
the owner warns them not toleave any food out, as it will
attract bears. On the firstnight, they
have one man dress up as a bearRobert to surprise him and scare
him, because Charles is having abirthday so they do a big
surprise birthday party. Um, hiswife gives him a watch. Robert
(38:48):
gives him a pocket knife, veryimportant things that will come
into play later. Um, and he wasalso gifted by somebody we don't
meet, a old school survival bookthat he carries around and sort
of obsessively reads in thecorner by himself on the shoot.
Charles observes that Bob andMickey seem to be flirting. He's
a very jealous and paranoid man.
He looks at response tobasically any man looking her
(39:10):
way. And we see this happen timeand again, but
not he doesn't confront him yetbecause Bob decides he wants to
go find a Native American mannamed Jack Hawk, because he
wants him to be in one of thephotos. And so Mickey encourages
Charles to go ahead and go onthe plane with him when they
have to fly quite a distanceaway to this guy's house and to
(39:33):
go get him. He agrees, becausehe's like, fuck. Why not? I
guess I might as well have anadventure. And on the plane, he
begins to confront Bob when theplane hits a flock of geese and
goes down only Bob Steven, theguy from from and Charles
survived the crash. From thenon, Charles takes charge, using
his book smarts to help themsurvive. The only hiccup is a
(39:55):
giant quote, unquote, Kodiakbear that has decided to hunt
them down at.
Every turn. Will Charles, Robertand Steven get out of the woods
alive? Will Charles's booksmarts get them into more hot
water than if they'd probablyjust stayed still in the first
place? Will Charles accuse Robof trying to kill him, steal his
wife and take his fortune, onlyto be proven wrong, then right?
(40:17):
Then kind of wrong again? WillCharles and Rob bond over
murdering a bear, eating it,wearing its head and travel
across the vast wilderness, onlyfor Rob to double cross him out
of nowhere. Seems weird. Andwill Charles arrive back to see
his loving wife with theknowledge that she cheated on
him only to give her anincriminating the incriminating
evidence and as the end the filmends, basically say, Fuck you.
(40:42):
Stay tunedfor the credit, for the credits.
This one was not quite what Iexpected it to be. I did not
expect to see Sir AnthonyHopkins say, today I'm good. I
kill a mother fucker to thebear. That was pretty crazy.
There was a lot of really goodlines throughout. I think it was
really well written, but it wasreally frustrated how it was
directed. There was a lot ofmusic leading us through
(41:05):
different things. Every time wethought that maybe Charles was
just paranoid and that Rob wasactually a normal, cool dude
just getting us through thesituation in the most human way
possible. They threw a music cuein to make you feel like Rob is
actually bad. I was like, thisis you guys, you gotta stop the
bear. Is the serial killer. It'sweird. He's also not a, well,
(41:26):
the Kodiak bear. I think that'smade up, because he's just a
grizzly bear. People, I mean, grizzly bears are, they're
rough, but they're not thatrough. Young Anthony Hopkins is
still very old is, I think Ienjoyed it because survival
movie, and that's kind of likean end of the world movie. And I
was obsessed with hatchet as akid, so the book, oh, okay,
(41:58):
just a couple of really smallpieces of trivia. This is one of
Barthe bears final acting rolesbefore his death in May 2000 at
the age of 23for all the chase scenes where
the bear is seen Breakingbranches, twigs, small trees,
etc, the material used was madeout of breakaway balsa wood.
Several trainers werestrategically positioned around
the perimeters where the bearworked. The area was checked and
(42:19):
cleared for all debris hazard tothe bear, and moss and sawdust
were laid on the ground tocushion his feet.
Sir Anthony Hopkins almost died.
He he was taking painkillers fora neck problem. He fell in the
river. He didn't feel how coldhe was, and he became
hypothermic and had to be rushedto the hospital to be treated.
(42:40):
And that's all I've got. Wow,how old was Harold paranow In
this yet, was he a kid? He looksso young. I I feel so awful. I
was like, Is this Chris Rock?
He has, like, he's thinner, andhe's, like, really got this
energy, and his, like, the shapeof his eyes look different. He
is young. He looks young, so,no, he's to me, was pretty
(43:04):
unrecognizable. I was justsurprised in the credits. I was
like, oh shit, it's you. I spentso much time with you this year.
Okay, I've never seen the edge,really. I saw it. I don't long
ago, like 97 or 98 it was. Iremember being fine. Yeah, it
was, it's a fun 90s action film.
It's, it's in that long Leagueof 90s action films that have a
(43:28):
similar tonal, yeah, I don'tknow they feel like they're
their own thing, but it's prettywell done. It's very over the
top. But, you know, Mamet wrotesome good stuff. Yeah, man, I
heard some good stuff.
Everything. Did some good stuff.
Yeah.
All right, five minutes, and Iam talking about a recent
(43:49):
classic, kiano, hey, man, how are you? How you doing?
Nothing makes sense anymore. Areyou okay? Daisy broke up with
me.
Well, it's gonna be okay. You'reright. Clarence, I want you to
(44:11):
meet Keanu.
No,God, that's the cutest guy I've
ever seen in my life.
Why's your door open? Gianni,I'm sorry.
Oh, steps up, bro. I'm herebecause my place got broken
(44:33):
into. Has anyone shady come byhere? I mean the 17th street
Blips. The 17 street Blips.
Okay. Where are they? 17 streetlet's just go check it out.
What's the worst that canhappen? One beer, please. I'll
take a white wine specific. Whatyou can't talk like that. You
sound like John Ritter all thetime. You in the right place?
Did we in the right place? Um,tectonic, nice. My name is Shark
(44:56):
Tank.
Sick. Oh, every day I'mhustling. Every day I'm Muslim.
Cheddar has got Kiana. We in themarket right now for like a
gangster pet. You serious?
I am not breaking the law. Wejust feed him some bull about
(45:16):
New Jack City, and we get Keanu.
You ain'tnever seen nobody get killed
before. I've seen people getkilled before.
Come on. Keanu needs you. I needyou.
Where are you? What do you thinkmy idea phone was? Why are you
talking to me like that? I talklike that sometimes.
(45:38):
Check it. Bucha, so what you gotme? Appendix.
It took it out of my body. What?
(46:00):
See, what we got here.
What is this? Oh, this must shitright here.
Yeah, from 2016directed by Peter Atencio, who
has mostly television credits, including 16 episodes of the
(46:22):
Midnight Show and six episodesof Jean Claude Van Johnson,
remember that one you don't? Oh,it's actually pretty good. And
54 episodes of Key and Peele, written by Jordan Peele, who has
18 credits, including, get outus nope and The Candy Man remake
Wendell and wild, and 40episodes of something called the
(46:44):
last OG not familiar with it.
And also Alex Rubens, who's got54 episodes of Key and Peele,
four episodes of Rick and Morty, and 25 episodes of community
starring Keegan Michael Key, whohas 109 episodes of Mad TV,
(47:06):
which I completely forgot. Wow.
55 episodes of key and peel andBucky Larson and the Predator
just recently.
And Jordan Peele, who has 20episodes of the new Twilight
Zone. 81 episodes of big mouthand 55 episodes of key and peel.
(47:26):
They were both in Weird Al'swhite and nerdy video, yes,
driving the car right? And thenTiffany Haddish is in this,
shoes and wishes the oathNobody's Fool. Also in this is
Method Man Darrell, Britt,Gibson Will Forte, Louise
Guzman, Rob Huebel and AnnaFaris as a very ridiculous
version of herself.
(47:48):
You guys have seen Keanu I haveso the movie starts with a pair
of assassins that kill everyonein a drug processing facility
run by a Mexican cartel, everyone that is except for a
ridiculously adorable littlekitten that somehow makes it out
while guns are blasting and shitis exploding all around him. And
then we meet the main charactersof the story, REL, who was
(48:09):
despondent because he just gotdumped by his girlfriend and
Clarence, his best friend, whois married, RHEL, finds this
adorable kitten, fallsimmediately in love with it and
names him Keanu. And you guys, everyone would fall in love with
this kitten. He is so goddamnbeautiful.
So while Clarence, his wife, isoff on a weekend trip with some
(48:29):
friends, Clarence and REL aregoing to have a guy weekend, and
they start by going out to themovies. They're having a pretty
good night, but when they getback, they find that rails place
has been ransacked and Keanu ismissing.
Clues point to the fact that RELneighbor is a drug dealer, and
the people he deals with mighthave thought rel's house was
actually the dealer's house, sothey probably have his kitten.
And in judgment, that reallyonly makes sense in these kind
(48:52):
of movies, they both decidethey're going to go find this
gang and get Keanu back.
The first place they hit is astrip joint where they are
mistaken for the two assassinsfrom the beginning of the movie,
and they go along with itbecause they find that Keanu is
there with the gang, but theycan't get him safely out yet. So
this leads to them gettinginvolved with the gang, where
they are expected to sell a newstreet drug called Holy shit.
(49:16):
Get into misadventure aftermisadventure, trying to just
make it through the night andget Keanu back. There are a
couple of very hilarious momentsin the movie, much of them
concerning rel and Clarencehaving to be a lot more black
than they actually are.
They take on the names tectonicand Shark Tank and start
teaching this gang of prettyrough individuals how to be
(49:38):
Stone Cold killers. There's alsoan extended George Michael joke
running through the movie withan amazing payoff and an
absolutely bonkers cameo by AnnaFerris. This movie is a goddamn
delight. Second time I've seenit, and I really, really loved
it. Very, very funny. And ofcourse, the two real assassins
from the beginning are alsoplayed by Key and Peele.
(50:01):
Trivia,seven cats and kittens played
Keanu each one received a caseof Fancy Feast and an assortment
of cat toys. Since Keegan,Michael Key is allergic to cats,
he had to take medication inorder to interact with them. And
then, in an interview with Ellenon her talk show, Tiffany
Haddish stated that she kept oneof the cats after filming
(50:25):
Keanu. Reeves has a cameo as thevoice of Keanu. This was a last
minute edition just before thefilm was screened at South by
Southwest. Reeves contacted keyand peel directly and expressed
interest in being involved, though his representatives had
declined an earlier request fromkey and peel Reeves was
intrigued by the film's firsttrailer. It's called Keanu. This
(50:47):
is not available to streamanywhere, but I own it because
it's so goddamn cute. Oh,excellent. Boom, damn. It's
pretty good. Yes, Eric, Ithought this was an excellent
topic. Thank you. Yeah, did you like Keanu? You know,
(51:09):
it's been such a long time. Isaw it in theaters, and I
remember liking it, but I wouldlike to re watch it, because
it's been a while. It is reallycute. I did remember Keanu
Reeves' voice popping up andbeing like, oh,
Vanessa, that means that youhave the next sub genre. Oh,
(51:31):
gosh, you're right. Well, werecently lost a legend. Mr. Val
Kilmer passed away on April 1,so a couple weeks ago. So I
think if we each chose a filmfrom his catalog, that might be
pretty cool. I love this idea.
Yeah, definitely. He's He's donea few films. Yeah, I think
there's plenty to choose from inthere, more action than you
