Unknown (00:00):
You ready?
Oh, I'm sorry, did I break yourconcentration?
Somewhere between science and asuperstition.

(00:22):
How's I have such sights to showyou.
Strange eons. Welcome tostrangeeons radio. That is Eric
over there. Hello, that isVaness over there. Hello, and I
am Kelly, you guys, I was justreading something, and I'm not

(00:43):
sure how I feel about this, butDarren Aronofsky, okay,
now has been tapped to make TheCujo remake.
Hmm, that's a unique choice.
Bleak,it'll just be Black Swan, but
with a dog.

(01:07):
What I don't understand aboutthis? First of all, you know my
feeling on just remaking movies, especially when it's Stephen
King properties, there's so muchthat hasn't been touched, and
we're going to remake a moviethat was good enough? Yeah, it
didn't really require a remake.
And I'm not sure there's a lotmore to mine out of the story.

(01:27):
I'm not sure what he's going tofind, unless we're going to get,
you know, like the dog'sinternal
the darkness, the mom has drugissues and the kids been abused
by his pastor or something, right? And it has to take place.
It has to be a period piece, because the entire movie could

(01:50):
not happen today. Just as soonas you've got your phone out,
you can tell somebody you'rebeing attacked by a giant dog.
So I'm just not sure. But also, you know, I just don't
understand why Aronofsky wouldeven be interested in this is a
weird combo. Like, it just feelslike not a, not a thing that he

(02:11):
would care about for sure. Yeah, unless this is just one of those
things where, you know, everybody gets a little bit of
fucking money when they agree tothese things, whether it gets
made or not, and maybe hethinks, yeah, I'll take the
million dollar up front anddevelop this while I'm actually
thinking about doing my otherthing. I'm still kind of bummed

(02:33):
that Fuller, Brian Fuller, nevergot his Christine off the
ground, even though that wasalso a movie that was good
enough and didn't need to beremade.
The original for that. Some, some nobody, Vanessa, probably,
why me. It's John Carpenter, okay, sorry,

(02:57):
look like really. Okay, that's fair, yeah. So weird
stuff happening in the world,true.
Speaking of weird stuff, Istarted watching, God, you turn
me into a fucking animation guy.
Started watching Lazarus on max.

(03:19):
Okay, it's a Japanese anime.
It's one of those adult swims.
So it's coming on the next nighton max. It's pretty bold idea. I
think the Japanese can get awaywith this. It is about a
scientistthe world has just fallen in

(03:40):
love with, and he has created avaccine that everybody has
taken, and it cures everything.
And then he comes on and threeyears later and says, in about
30 days, you will all be dead. Idid hear about this. It sounds
excellent. And he's like, goodluck with everything, unless, of

(04:00):
course, you can find me, becauseI do have a cure for this, but
good luck finding me. And sothere is a team assembled diner
do Wells who they think might beable to track him down somehow.
But I was like, this is a prettybold idea. I wonder who got this
idea.

(04:22):
So I don't know, the firstepisode is basically an extended
escape from prison slash chasescene, and it's a little it's a
little over the top and silly, but it's also kind of got a cool
feel to it and all that. So I'monly two episodes in. I'm not

(04:43):
sure if I like it or not yet,but I am watching it. It's
called Lazarus, and it's on max.
Wow. Well, I really want tocheck that out very badly now,
but I did check into somethingthat you had watched and
recommended. I think I.
I mean, you were really sexuallyinto it.

(05:04):
That's Craven the hunter. Yeah, you mean the best movie ever
made.
I mean, I have questions, whenis your when is your next child?
Do after watching this amazingmovie,
I was like, oh, it's the kickass guy. And the whole time I
was like, I mean, is he reallybuff enough to be craving like,

(05:26):
the only time that I think itcompletely sells it is pretty
much the final shot where he'slike, I'm gonna put on this
jacket and open up my shirt andsit on this chair for no reason
and look at myself.
I was like, Damn son, damn youare going for it. It was fun. It

(05:47):
was definitely better than madamWebb, like, significantly, yeah,
I thought it was better than anyof the venom movies, if I'm
being honest. Oh, I like Venommovies, but, like, I don't know
the there's something reallythat gets me in those. But
Craven, you know, it had, it hadits good stuff in there. I'm
excited to see the sequel withhis brother in it. That'll be

(06:07):
really fun. Well, this is notgoing to be made. No, no, they
wouldn't put it there if itwasn't going to be made. Yeah,
they wouldn't spend so much timeand effort and energy upping the
storyline of the chameleon.
Yeah. So I did love that, Eric, you would love that they
actually made the chameleonCravens brother like he we find
out in the comics. I am abouthalf an hour into it. Oh, okay,

(06:28):
okay, yeah, it's pretty awful, but it's pretty awesome. Yeah,
it's very watchable. I was alittle surprised at the level of
special effects and some of thebeginning stuff, but he's
escaping the level, or, youmean, the low level,
Wow, looks like he's animatedguy running, running away. Well,

(06:51):
let's see if you're only half anhour in, though, wait until he
gets attacked by a cheetah. Oh,right. Oh, I mean, I did talk
about Bruno Mattei last week, soI am ready.
You know, the entire Sony spiderverse was based on, let's pick
out a bunch of villains and makemovies about Spider Man, and

(07:14):
yet, they made very fewreferences to Spider Man at all,
and the aliens are all notvillains. It would take a lot to
then believe that Craven becomesobsessed with Spider Man to hunt
him down and kill him. No, 100%you would never, you would never
think, I think they hint at onepoint that when he's like
hallucinating that they'respiders. And it's like, is this

(07:36):
the beginning? Is this where youbegin your obsession to kill all
spider related things, not onlythat, but that's his mom's fear
too. And I was like, oh, did youpass that down? Do you pass your
phobias down?
Genetically,horribly stupid. I fucking loved
it. I've seen it twice now.

(08:01):
I love the guy, the rhino. Therhino, yeah, I thought he was
the best actor in there. Fuckingwhat's his name?
Maximus, the fatherwho doesn't want to see Russell
Crowe doing just an accent.
This guy can't do an accent tosave his life, but, man, will he

(08:23):
try just the most over the top,Russian accent.
Okay, and, and he also, I don'tthink he realized the movie he
was in. Oh, I don't think soeither. I don't know. He was
just in his own world, doing hisown thing. Didn't he play Jor el
in the Henry cable Superman?
Wasn't he Superman's dad inthat? Oh, I don't remember.

(08:46):
Could be I think so. And I'mjust like, did you think you
were in another giganticsuperhero movie? Because he's
really pouring it on. It feelslike that's like Sony's go to
move. Is they trick people in amovie? They're like, do you want
to be in a Marvel movie? We'vegot one shooting in five days.
Come on down.

(09:09):
Here's the pages you need.
Here's the check. That's all youreally need to see. We'll just
say the lines near earpieceyou're finding good to go.
Craven is available onNetflix or something now, oh,
gosh, maybe it was Netflix. It'sfree, though, so you have no
excuse. Yeah, it is, it is free.
It's worth checking out becauseit's fun. Yeah, it's nothing

(09:33):
wrong with a fun, ridiculousfilm. 100% may I suggest you do
some gummies beforehand. Andmushroom gummies really helped
intensify, make those absare fine. It's just he's so he's
just a slender guy in general. Iwas like, really, I've read,
I've read enough comics to knowthat Craven is maybe a little

(09:54):
more amped. I don't know you.
Yeah, it's okay. It's fine. Itdepends on who's drawing. Yeah,
he's he's had the super buff, and then he's also kind of had
the, he's a hunter, so he'sright, streamlined. Oh, okay,
interesting. Good to know that'scomics every option.

(10:19):
So I've kicked off anotherseason of Black Mirror
being Netflix. You know, likeall seven came out. Whatever it
is, came out at once. Yeah, which I'm never going to binge
watch this series. Fuck no.
And I watched the first episode, and it's so bleak and so

(10:40):
in our worldthat have you seen which one is
the first one? I think it wasthe first one, the one about the
lady who gets the brain damage.
Oh, that has the I watch.
I watched the one with, that'sthe sequel to the USS Callister.
Oh, that's right, I forgot thatone. I'll definitely check. I

(11:02):
thought that was the firstepisode i Who knows, it may just
been what I plugged in thereplay. But it's so sad and so
depressingand so frighteningly plausible
that I'm just like, oh god, yeah, you know brain surgery,

(11:27):
monthly installment payments. Ohno, no, no. That just it's raw,
oh no, and it's incredibly wellperformed by their I don't know
their names, but they're tooknown.
They're people you recognize, just like, usually doing the
later black mirrors, yeah. Butso, you know, if you really want
to feel crappy and think aboutsomething so terrifying and so

(11:50):
incredibly plausible right now,I mean, like,
a couple years, maybe even acouple months away, plausible
that enjoy, but I'm like, it'sgonna be a while till I watch
another black mirror episode. Ithink I, you know, honestly, I
still haven't finished theprevious season because it's
just so dark and hard to slogthrough. And they're great, and

(12:13):
I love sci fi, but fuck yeah, that's how I feel about hand
maidens tale is I'm like, it.
We're just like, a month, amonth away from this a couple
years ago that popped up, andhe's like, I don't need to watch
that.
Like, okay, yeah, we'll watchthat later. Or never read the
book. Yeah, yeah, that Callistersequel episode is an hour and a

(12:35):
half long. Oh, wow. It's great, cool. That was a lot of fun.
They do every once in a while, pull ones. That's like, not
entirely depressed, yeah, those, those are so nice. I wish that
half of them were that, or twoor three of them are that. I've
heard surprisingly little abouta launch at New Black Mirror. So
maybe a lot of people arefeeling it's like, you know, I

(12:59):
want to watch Keanu.
I think a lot of the problem isalso, when
we were watching TV series, youknew that in September or
October your new season wasgoing to start, but what was the
last time this was on? Fouryears ago, something like that.
Yeah, I didn't even know one wasin the works. I didn't either.

(13:20):
Yeah, they did. The previous onewas, was it banter, snatch the
like, choose your own adventure, remote thing, which I also did
not get all the way through. So,yeah, I watched it once. I'm
going, I'm not playing the game, right? Yeah. So, well, that's
cool. I'll check out what theother ones are. I might avoid
that one you were just talkingabout Jesus.

(13:42):
I when I did watch this, brand, brand new, I had a screener of
this. In fact, it is calledfight or flight with Josh
Hartnett. Ooh, who I do notlike,
but I loved in this, yeah, whata journey
it is about a and Katie sack offoddly in this looking very

(14:07):
handsome. Oh, good, yeah, as shedoes, that's a good word for
Katie. She's her chin and jawsand cheeks are so chiseled that
I was like, Oh, come on, honey, eat a cookie or something.
Started to look she's got veryshort hairdo styled up. And I
was like, Who is this dude? Helooks so familiar to me. Oh,
that's Katie sack off.

(14:29):
But Josh Hartnett is a drunk andretired Special Agent kind of
guy in Thailand, and he getssucked into doing this job for
his old boss, and that is, thereis a person that nobody really

(14:49):
knows who they are. They're justknown as the ghost, and they
have been responsible for takingdown corporations and all this
stuff. Everybody losing money.
And he the.
He has been tracked to thisplane, and Josh Hartnett now has
to go find him on this plane.
But what he doesn't realize isthat the plane is full of
mercenaries who also want totake down the ghost, and so now

(15:12):
it is a huge it's like bullettrain, or one of those movies
where it's just massive fightscenes and everything, all on a
plane. And it's really, reallyfun. I mean, it is so good. What
was that name? Again, fight orflight.
It's on my screener, but, oh,sure, okay, but in theaters next

(15:37):
month,it's, I think I will go and see
it in theater. It was that muchfun. Wow. Okay, I was gonna say,
I feel like I heard about it,but I was shocked that it was a
Yeah, it was good. It wasavailable. Oh, no, it is not
available. Okay, that makes mefeel less crazy. Listen, no
people. Well, speaking of filmsthat you should or should not

(15:59):
see, you should not see 2024. Iselevation available on max. What
is this about? Okay, so this isstarring Anthony Mackey and
Marina background. Who's thegirl from Dead Pool and
serenity. Fucking love her.
She's gorgeous. She'sunwatchable in this Oh no. It is
a like a post apocalyptic worldwhere there are these creatures

(16:24):
that have wiped out pretty muchall of humanity, except anyone
who's above 8000 feet. For somereason, they cannot go above an
8000 feet line. And it's likeacross the it's not even like an
inch over. They will not crossthat threshold. So of course, in
Colorado, there are somesurvivors, sure, including
Anthony Mackey, who his son hasa lung problem, and so he needs

(16:50):
to go down to the town, I thinkit's Denver, to get additional
oxygen supplies for his kid. Andso Marina is a scientist who had
left her lab and thinks shemight have a way of stopping
these creatures, but she needsto go and check it out. So she

(17:10):
goes along with him, and then hehas a friend who also joins
them. It is horrible. It is awaste of mental energy. It was
just so poorly acted, so poorlywritten. Every actor you just
like, you just know there's noreason to sit through it. I'm

(17:31):
gonna mentally dump this on thedirector then, because those are
some good I know, but thematerial, for example, Marina,
she's just drunk the whole timeso and she has really poorly
written dialog, so she's justwandering around saying stupid

(17:51):
stuff, being drunk constantly.
And you're just like, What thefuck is this? And Anthony Mackey
is trying to be charismatic, buthe really is not written in a
three dimensional way. He's veryflat, very, very, very flat
character to the point whereyou're like, Yeah, your wife
died. That's sad. Like, okay.

(18:12):
He's like, my wife's dead. Mywife's dead. Man, I can't do
this, because what? My wife'sdead. I'm like, oh my god,
fucking dude. Okay, cool, we getit. So, yeah, I don't think it's
the talent's fault. I really, Ithink it is directing and
writing that's just truly Godawful. Wrote the Born ultimatum,
but he also wrote Oceans 12. So,you know, there's the writer the

(18:32):
so the director is George Nolfi, okay, yeah.
Well, I don't know if he wrotethis one, but he's his other
writing credits were, gotcha, gotcha, gotcha. Anthony Mackey
needs to learn to turn down arole or two, right? He's just
been popping up in everything, especially right now when, when

(18:53):
you're the new Captain America, you should probably be a little
more careful with with yourbrand. Yeah, instead of a
straight to streaming whatever,I also forgotten what this was
called, I needed about 15minutes into it, and I was like,
This is not for me.
Good on you. Well, I mean, it'snice to know how it ends, I

(19:15):
guess. But still, it's stupid, stupid ass ending. But, you
know, fine, yeah, I'll passelevation. I think that was a
Netflix Original, Max, Max,okay,
but should be, should be Netflixshould be fucking sci fi
original.
Do they have, do they have astreaming platform? Give it to

(19:38):
them, similar. There you go. Allright? Well, another Sun shutter
or prime or something, a moviecalled Bloody AX wound. Oh, boy,
okay, which is I did not realizetill I'd watched it, director,
writer, several cast membersfrom Uncle pecker, which is a
indie film that I enjoyed quitea bit.

(20:00):
Too,and if I'd known that, it might
have twisted my watch this alittle bit more, because it's
he's got a weird sense of humor, and it comes across at times,
and by the end, looking back onit, okay, I get what's going on
here a little bit more. Butthe storyline is, there's a
serial killer whose main form ofmoney is filming his own murders

(20:23):
and renting them from a rentalstore that he owns,
and what his daughter wants totake over the family business.
Oh, but she's not sure if she orsure if she's he's not sure if
she's ready. And there's allthis stuff, and for some reason,
the guy's a zombie, but a fullyarticulate,

(20:48):
a live zombie, you better. He'swearing a really good mask.
Yeah, okay, who I believe is theguy who was the main baddie from
Uncle pecker.
But Jeffrey Dean Morgan's in itfor a little bit,
one of those kind of low budgetthings. But maybe if you're

(21:10):
gonna get somebody to big anappearance in your film, that's
not such a bad place to start.
So it's quirky, it's weird. It'sa hard one to go. You have to go
out and see this because it'soff the wall enough that I think
some of the reviews here, anoise can annoyed very easily,

(21:30):
but and it doesn't quite have Idon't know I want to watch it
again, just because I did likeUncle Becker so much that I just
like, did I miss it, or Did hejust not hit it as hard as
squarely on the nail as he didwith his first film or his
previous film? Butso good if you're looking for a
weird, strange film, yeah, thathas a fair amount of humor.

(21:58):
So bloody Excellent. Hi. Yeah,it sounds since you started
describing the plot, I dovaguely remember, like a trailer
or something for thisunchecker, I think, yeah, I'm
pretty sure it's was was onshutter at one point.
Well, okay, how about we take alittle break, and then when we

(22:19):
come back, we're going to betalking about Val Kilmer movies.
Man, hey, I need the fastestrider. You got gotta

(22:39):
ride no more. I got sparklingwater? I am so dry, guys, can I
help you? Oh, no, I'm good. He'sgot me. Thanks. Can we cut while
we're standing around like this?
Why don't we have a little chatabout the script? Yeah, it's a
bit weird. You know, if you wantto get a message to someone, you
just send a text. This is the21st century Val No, it's the
Wild West. I can't really use myphone now. Can I of course, you
can I. Meanwhile, it really isimpossible to work with, isn't

(23:00):
it? No, I'm not. Now look, thefilm is not about the message.
It's about the man and hisjourney delivering it. You take
away that and you take away theheart of the story. Okay,
everybody, let's get back toones. We're gonna go right into
the danger zone. I need thefastest texter you got

(23:23):
if I don't text no more. Uh oh.
Val's lost that loving feelingsend emails.
Ice is down. Somebody get meMaverick on the line, or goose
or cougar or Jay boy, whatevertheir names were. I

(23:47):
we've come back. We havereturned. Hello, we're back.
Yes, something's going on.
We're here.
Vanessa, this was your sub genrepick, yeah, so I wanted to talk
about Val Kilmer movies, becausehe's recently passed away on
April 1, and so this would be agood opportunity to check his
stuff out. So I did a littleresearch on him before we get

(24:10):
going. He was in 103 things. Heplayed roles ranging from Bruce
Wayne and Batman Forever toIceman and Top Gun Doc Holliday
and tombstone, which we'vetalked about, kiss, kiss, bang,
bang, and just a ton of stuff.
In the 90s, he was such apresent force. As his fame rose,
he became the it man, but alsoimpossible to work with, and he

(24:32):
burned a lot of bridges, notablyand discussed on a previous
episode about the Island of DrMoreau, he he went through at
least three different directorswith that, and just pissed off a
lot of people. He basically madea black list of directors and
then kind of disappeared fromfilm, and ended up doing the the
aughts, the early aughts, intheater, where he kind of re

(24:53):
regained his fitting and thenstarted getting back into.
Roles later, he died April 1,2025 after complications from
throat cancer leading topneumonia. In 1992 film critic
Roger Ebert remarked, if there'san award for the most unsung

(25:13):
leading man of his generation,Kilmer, should get it.
There was, you know, worked inSuncoast for many years. I'm
sitting here going, Man, if Idon't have time to watch one of
his films, which thankfully Idid, I could talk about real
genius, Top Gun, sir, and maybetop secret, yeah, without even
making notes, because the stuffhe did was so good and so re

(25:37):
watchable, yeah, yeah. And hewas so charismatic on screen,
and just like really easily fellinto the parts that he was
given, no matter how diversethey were, which is really well
being amazing, if you thinkabout on the paper I'm your
Huckleberry is kind of a strangeline, but his delivery in that
movie is so fucking cool and soperfect. Like, okay, that works

(26:03):
absolutely, absolutely, I needto re watch Kiss, kiss, Big
Bang, because that I finally sawthat this year, and I was blown
away. I was like, Why did Isleep on this movie? Is that
Shane Black? Yeah, yeah, that'sa that's a good film, yeah.
Okay, well, Vanessa, you want togo first then, yeah, I would
love to go first. I went with afilm that I watched as a little

(26:26):
kid and have not seen a longtime, which is 1988 Willow.
It was a different time. It wasa time of destiny,
a time when a child could tipthe balance between good and

(26:49):
evil. Why, with my powers, withthe strength of my great army,
can you not find one littlechild a time for an unlikely
hero named Willow, until I'm notgonna let anything happen to the
baby. You gotta give that babyto somebody. I'm somebody.

(27:11):
A time of scoundrels, what goeson here, and a time of rebels.
You are great. You'rea great warrior and a swordsman,

(27:43):
and it's 10 times bigger than Iam. Stupid. Find
a child, find a child.
It was a time when courage couldbe found where you least expect
it.
I a time when unearthly powersranged and good men risked their

(28:08):
lives,a time of great adventure.
From the creator of Star Warsand the director of cocoon

(28:31):
Willow.
So I was it was my era, so Ijust really loved this movie,
but could not remember it tosave my life. So, directed by
Ron Howard, who had done thingslike splash, cocoon, parenthood,
backdroft and now does a lot ofdocumentaries written by George
Lucas and Bob Doleman, starringWarwick nobody's full of no I

(28:55):
know it's full of no one'sLucasfilm did a lot of the
effects anyway, starring WarwickDavis as Willow. He has 93
credits, including leprechaunand leprechaun. He was Professor
Flitwick and Harry Potter. Hewas Marvin and Hitchhiker's
Guide to the Galaxy and wicketthe Ewok in a bunch of Star Wars

(29:16):
films. Val Kilmer plays madmartigen. Joanne Whaley plays 89
has 89 credits, includingcarnival row Daredevil as sister
Maggie and the bourgeois, lotsof British stuff, and Jean
Marsh, who has 112 credits, including frenzy Doctor Who the
ghost hunter upstairs, downstairs, and some twin

(29:37):
babies, and probably some morebabies too. These twin babies,
this was their only role, andthey never acted again, but they
did a great job. So the plotfollows an evil sorceress named
Queenabove morta, who hears of a
prophecy that a child with aspecial birthmark will bring her
downfall. She gathers andimprisons all the expected.

(30:00):
Mothers in their realm toinspect each child as is born,
to see if it has the mark. Whenthe child with the mark is born,
the mother persuades the midwifeto smuggle the baby out of the
castle. The Queen then sends herdaughter to go after the baby,
along with some evil hounds, kind of separately, who do
eventually catch up with themidwife, and before eating her,
the midwife puts the baby onsome dried grass and pushes her

(30:22):
down the river. The baby arrivesat the village of nilwin, housed
by a race of dwarves, thechildren of Willow, a farmer
aspiring to become theapprentice of the town elder and
basically a cool magician guy,but not quite getting it. His
kids find her, and along withwillows wife, take the baby in.

(30:45):
When a Devil Dog arrives at thetown and attacks people, Willow
has to come forward with thegirl and say, Hey, this is
probably why this kid, who theyseem to be looking for. The Town
elder then sends Willow, oftenan adventure, to deliver the
girl back to the people, to herbig people, and to safety. The
first person he runs into is madmartigan, a merc trapped in a

(31:07):
crow cage. He promises to takecare of the baby in exchange for
his freedom. And when no oneelse will stop and help, they
finally give in and say, Okay, fine, here. Take the baby. On
their way back home, theydiscover a giant bird carrying
the baby off into the woods.
Willow chases after her, andit's like, wait a minute, that's
not what I said this. And istold by faerie that is his

(31:28):
destiny to help her, and thatthe baby wishes for him to do
so. So he reluctantly agrees andbegins a journey across the
realm with a mishmash ofhelpers, including two zany
French brownies mad martigen, again, dressed as a lady, a
sorceress, trapped in the bodyof a brush tail possum. And the
rest of the film entails a sortof blossoming bromance with

(31:49):
jibes from the cheap seats aswell as a silly romance and some
gnarly, dark moments, as 80sfantasy movies do. So just
couple thoughts. It's reallycute and funny in parts. The
elder, when he's deciding whatwill be willows fate, he's
tossing these bones, and he sortof gets down. He says, Willow

(32:10):
the bones tell me nothing. Whatdo you
want to do? It's way zanier thanI remember. The brownies are
fucking lot, man, they just, they're too much. I mean, you
can get through it, but they'rein way more of this film than I
remember. Val Kilmer has a lotof physical acting. His wig is
stupid, isn't and insane, but hejust puts so much into it that

(32:34):
there's almost like a Jim Carreyness to him, like you just
believe in him.
There's also a darkness in herethat's fucked up. There's a
troll that gets turned into aflesh blob, which is really
gross. There is a pot thatbecomes an angry four legged
creature that chases Willowaround. There's a two headed
creature that ends up gettingbeheaded. Beautiful locations.

(32:56):
The baby's Great. Oh, my God, mylittle Toothless, Toothless
sweetheart. She is just smileyand really never, never watch
her just losing her shit. She'sjust a good baby, man, good
expressions. So,hey, I'm my world has changed.
I knew I was going to go over. Idid want to give a little bit of

(33:18):
trivia. Warwick Davis explainsthat the question he gets the
most asked about working isabout working with Bill. What?
Warwick Davis explains that thequestion he gets asked the most
was how it was like working withVal Kilmer during the 90s,
Kilmer had developed areputation of an actor with whom
it was difficult, if notimpossible, to work. However,

(33:40):
Davis said he was very he hasvery fond memories of working
with Kilmer, describing him ashaving a great, wacky sense of
humor and being very passionateand dedicated to the job. Kilmer
also ad libbed much of thedialog. So
I have a lot more on this. Butyeah, it's, it's good. I was, I

(34:00):
was pretty happy. So, yeah, Ikind of love this movie. Yeah,
yeah. I think that's what was sodisappointing about the Disney
series, was that it completelymissed the feel of the movie. I
thought, yeah, I have notwatched it, but I did know that
they canceled it and, you know, they stripped it from their
site. Oh, I did not know thatthey're doing a warner brothers

(34:23):
like tax write off. Sobasically, they're calling it a
loss, and they're making surethey can't they don't have to
pay anyone residuals. Oh, wow, yeah. So it was only on their
site for a few months, and theyjust ripped it off and decided
Nope. There was also, like, abook series that came out on
Willow, to which George Lucashas said that he has nothing to

(34:45):
do with it. And even though itwas like based off of all his
notes, he was really busy makingStar Wars at the time. So when
it was being written angels, Ithink it was written by Chris
Claremont, it was, oh shit, Ipicked it up. It was hard to
read.
Well.
The better at the comic bookwriting. Yeah. I heard it was,
yeah, super dark. Super, superdark. I just, I remember

(35:06):
thinking I would love forsomething to happen.
Oh, no, all right. Well, Eric,if you don't mind, I will go
next, enjoy giving myself fiveminutes on the buzzer.
And I'm talking about a littlemovie called mcgruber.

(35:29):
Load it up. He's the world'sdeadliest villain, sir. He's
ruthless. No speak Christian, yep, and brilliant. Straight
flush, I'm gonna turn WashingtonDC into a pile of ash. He's
known only as Dieter, and untilnow, he's been unstoppable.

(35:49):
What the world needs is a herowho's so top secret we don't
even know his full name. Hello.
Don't worry, this is just likeNicaragua. Nicaragua, this is
nothing like Nicaragua.
My name is mcgruber, capital M,A, C, capital G, R, u, v, e,

(36:20):
get behindhim. Don't worry, we got your
back. We're only seven blocksaway, so if anything goes down,
have a look. Okay, you got meabout 20 blocks. Get ready for
the best action. Just do exactlyas I say, comedy.

(36:45):
I mean action comedy of thedecade on May 21
Not for long, mcgruber and histeam will rid the world of evil
once and for all. I cannot waitto cut off your and shove it in
your mcruber coming to save theworld. May 21 Where have you

(37:08):
been? I just took an upperDecker in the master bathroom.
Upper Decker, guess where youtake it? Number two, in the
water tank and not in the bowl.
You look great.
From 2010directed by Joma Jacob, who has
lots of Saturday Night Liverelated projects, including the
Lonely Island sure films, popstar, never stop, never

(37:29):
stopping. And mcgruber to indevelopment,
written by Will Forte, who wasin all 12 episodes of action.
Remember that show that was kindof fun, extreme movie, which
I've never seen. And 67 episodesof The Last Man on Earth was

(37:50):
also written by John Solomon, who's got mostly TV stuff like
AP Bio, I think you shouldleave. And also all 67 episodes
of The Last Man on Earth, andthen the director is also one of
the writers. His writing creditsinclude pop star, the Lonely
Island short films, etc. Theseguys all write together, yeah.

(38:11):
Starring Will Forte, tons ofvoiceover work. He was in
fanboys, Rock of Ages, 22 JumpStreet, Keanu, pop star, Last
Man on Earth and studio 666,and Val Kilmer, real genius. He
was in a TV movie of the murdersin the room, or which I'm going
to have to track down. Wow.

(38:32):
Yeah. True Romance, of course.
Heat, kiss, kiss, bang, bang.
Did you know he was the voice ofkit in the Knight Rider reboot?
Not until Iand also in this is Chris and
wig, who's in date night Paulbridesmaids Arrested Development
139 episodes of Saturday NightLive.

(38:55):
And also the absolutely horribleWonder Woman. 1984
joining them in this movie isRyan Philippe powers booth and
Maya Rudolph. Have you guys seenmcgruber? No, you would hate
this. Vanessa, I knowit's one of those that's SNL.
We open in Ecuador, whereColonel Jim faith and Lieutenant

(39:18):
Dixon Piper are searching for aman named MacGruber. MacGruber
is a former Green Beret, NavySeal and Army Ranger who served
six tours of duty in DesertStorm, four in Bosnia and three
each in Angola, Somalia,Mozambique, Nicaragua and Sierra
Leone. He is a recipient of 16Purple Hearts, with three
Congressional Medals of Honor, seven presidential medals of

(39:39):
bravery and so on,finding him meditating in a
chapel, they ask him to retrievethe warhead, which they say has
been moved to US soil.
It has been stolen by Dieter vonKunt, who just happens to be the
man who killed macgrubersfiance. So mcgruber gets to
assembling his team, whichincludes the best.

(40:00):
The best. The only one hecouldn't get was Vicky st Elmo,
who refused, because she has anew life now and does not want
to be associated with that.
Unfortunately, when he assemblesthe team in a van on the tarmac
to get to the plane, the vanexplodes because the c4 they had
loaded in wasn't loadedcorrectly, and his team is
killed before they can evenstart the mission. Oh, God, this
leaves just Vicki st Elmo andDixon Piper to join mcgruber on

(40:23):
his mission. Their first stopLas Vegas sees mcgruber getting
angry at a civilian driver andobsessing over that instead of
getting on with the mission. Andthen the movie continues this
way, with tons of subtle and notso subtle jokes flying pretty
fast. Vicky is obviously in lovewith mcgruber, but he's too
blind with vengeance to see it,and Piper wants so badly to fit

(40:44):
in and help that he allowshimself to be belittled
constantly. Val Kilmer ishilarious as Dieter von Kuntz,
because he's actually the onlystraight man in the movie. He's
the bad guy, and he's so fuckingfurious and irritated that
mcgruber won't die.
And it's just very, very funnystuff. It all ends in a

(41:06):
hilarious wedding and a finalattack scene that you really
have to see to believeI even wrote here, Vanessa, you
will hate this movie. Oh,excellent. I'm glad you thought
of you thought of me in thatmoment. The movie is mcgruber,
the tagline the ultimate tool.
That is, because this is a ripoff of the MacGyver TV series,

(41:29):
trivia. Val Kilmer and WillForte almost ended up being on
CBS hit series, The Amazing Racebecause of this film where they
became good friends. Kilmerlater stayed at Forte's house
for a few months while searchingfor a new la based home for
himself and forte, who was ahuge fan of The Amazing Race,
introduced Kilmer to the show.
They were about to apply as ateam when their other work

(41:49):
commitments led to the ideabeing dropped. Yeah.
Will Forte said on Bill burr'spodcast that he was paid $12,000
for this film.
Major influence on the film wasDie Hard, which is director,

(42:11):
Jonah Jacobs favorite movie.
Cone actually located and usedthe prop see for explosives from
that movie, for action sequencesin this one. And in addition,
Val Coomer and powers booth wereboth told in pre production
meetings with Ville, with WillForte to act like you're in a
Joel Silver produced film in1988 suffered one of the biggest

(42:35):
theatrical fall offs in cinemahistory, when it dropped from
2546 cinemas to only 177in just three weeks,
that poorly gross, just sigh shyof its ten million budget. And
parade listed it as the secondbiggest off box office flop of

(42:56):
2010 Wow. This is amongChristopher Nolan's favorite
comedies. He quoted itconstantly on the set of The
Dark Knight Rises first he did.
And finally, Lee David zlotoff, creator of the TV series
MacGyver, felt that his legalright to make a film version of
his series was compromised withthe release of MacGruber, his
lawyer sent several cease anddesist letters to the production
company and met with litigators, although ultimately no legal

(43:17):
action was takenfirst. I thought this was a much
more recent film, for somereason, 2010 Yeah, 15 years ago
already. But wow. And also fiveyears ago. It
was only five years ago, right?
You might be, might be sufferingfrom some COVID time warfare. I
sure do all day, every day, but, and I, for some reason,

(43:40):
thought it did well, and the Rotten Tomato score is
abysmal, but it is a fan favorite, and
even got a TV show on paramountfor, like, yeah, like 11 episode
TV show. So I haven't watchedthat, but I think I might have
to look that up. Does it havethe original cast? Yep,

(44:00):
everybody, wow, yep.
Eric, you want to go, Sure.
Might as well.
All right, so I'm going to alterthe tone severely and talk about
2000 and twos the Salton Sea.
You Hi.

(44:24):
My name is Tom Van Allenor Danny Parker.
Maybe you can decide who I am.
Keep your eyes open. Nothing isas it seems,
that's good a place to start asany the

(44:45):
Mad World of the tweaker, the land of the perpetual night
party,I am in dire need of some cash.
All right, all right. Here wego.
The Alpha team is gonna besituated in the elevator. Right?
Look.
Your number two team is gonna besituated over here by the
stairwell.

(45:05):
Now every one of us is gonna beequipped with night vision
goggles for two way radio. Comeon. Danny, on buddy. I have to
pass on this one.
Hoo. Bear did so much Gack, theyhad to cut his nose off.
Consider my proposition. Take meit off. 250,000 look drunk. We
got a deal. Who? Bears inOh, you got the 411 on your good
old board pump 57 plugs into apolice informant.

(45:31):
He thinks that you might workfor the police.
My name is Tom Van Impe.
Everything you said is locked.
Your name Danny Parker, hiswife, was murdered in the Salton
Sea. I see everythingto you, yeah,
I know what you're thinking.

(45:57):
Sometimes you see the world soclearly.
And you know just what to do, orwhat you should have done
in the Salton Sea.
I said, Hey, babe, take a walkon the wild side. All right,

(46:19):
Huh? Huh?
You want to see this one? No, Ihave not seen it that. I did
watch the trailer. Yeah, it'sone. They've been on my radar a
long time as one of the Valcamera I felt I missed. It's
available to rent on a wholebunch of services. It's fairly
well available. Directed by DJCaruso, who directed four

(46:42):
episodes of The Shield, thebasically entertaining Disturbia
remake of her window, basicallyand over there, written by Tony
Gayton, who wrote faster and 57episodes Of Hell on Wheels,
whatever that is.
Val Kilmer tombstone.

(47:05):
I actually still remember seeingtombstone in the theater coming
out afterwards, just jazz man. Ifreaking love that. And Vincent.
Dr fino, Men in Black, daredevils, Kingpin,
El Camino, Christmas and 117credits, also Adam Goldberg,

(47:26):
three episodes of friendsSaving Private Ryan,
cavalcade of names like Dannytrio, Peter SARS, cars guard, so
many actors. And I'd say, youknow, Adam Goldberg playing a
meth addict is not a stretch. Hejust fits right into this role.
I can just envision it.

(47:48):
So this is a opens with thisamazing shot about playing a
trumpet in the middle of aburning building with him doing
a voiceover of this is where Iam. I'm not sure where it's
going to go, but let me tell youhow I got here, and it's a hell
of a start. Okay, this looksencouraging. Then they go on. A
weird little Beth was inventedin Japan during World War Two,

(48:11):
and was frequently given tokamikaze pilots,
saying, like lines like this guyprobably thought he was going to
survive running into thisairplane and rumor to have been
used by JFK and housewives inthe 50s, and really didn't get
into a legal world until the1970s

(48:32):
so I don't know how much of thatis true. I'm sure some of it is,
butthis one kind of fault of this
film is it feels like after.
You'll remember well, after PulpFiction came out, there's just
tons of movies like Californiawith a gay and all those films

(48:52):
that this would have fit in thatera perfectly. So it feels a
little dated in 2002but Val plays a guy who's got a
really solid double life goingon as a tweaker who is
definitely using and is he aprofessional trumpet player. And
movie goes along, you kind offind out some things, like his

(49:13):
wife has died, and he's involvedin
being a I'll just, I'll take itas far as to say he's involved
in reporting to the police, andfrom there, it develops into,
actually, some prettyinteresting stuff. I did like
this film, largely because this is Val
Kilmer just eaten scenery. He isso wonderfully dramatic, and

(49:36):
he's so powerful. And thenthere's scenes. He's really
funny. I mean, it is just himkicking ass.
It is a little, definitely a lotof style over substance, but the
style is good enough that I'mfine. The writer said that he
didn't write this as a movie tobe produced. He wrote it as a

(49:59):
spec script.
And he just put in the mostridiculous over to the top stuff
you could possibly think, feeling that there's no way this
is going to get made, becausethis is just ridiculous. Like
Vincent plays the manufacturerof the drugs whose nose got
blown off or torn off orsomething. So he's got a fake
nose on through most of themovie, and all the side

(50:20):
characters almost are just waycrazy, way over the top, but val
is this great center of thefilm, and just everything that
happens, kind of like monkey, 12Monkeys with Bruce Willis,
whatever happens to Bruce you'rewith with in this movie,
whatever's going on with Valyou're going with. So that

(50:40):
aspect I liked, of itmiddle of the road, with
positive in all the RottenTomatoes, but definitely higher
with fans by quite a bit.
Tagline, if you're looking forthe truth, you've come to the
wrong place.
All right, this was producedfive different producers, but
two of them were Eric LaSalle, who's best known for ER and

(51:01):
Frank Darabont. Oh, wow, we'reboth producers.
Couple other little quick notes.
Val Kilmer researched this byspending time with drugs of drug
abusers in Riverside in thegreater LA area, just for
research purposes.
And Vincent sounds like he musthave been a pain in the ass on

(51:22):
this movie. He purposely mouthbreathed during most of the
movie because, you know, he hadno nose, and added a no squeak,
finding that some persons who'dlost their nose had this happen.
But also, he also developed badand uneven suntan. Gained a
significant amount of weight, bleached his hair or preventing

(51:42):
improperly fitting apparel andwent method.
He is so his character, he doesa great job, but his character
is so annoying.
This is a person I couldn't hangout with for more than five
minutes in a real life. Butsolid film, really well done,
definitely worth act watchingfor if you want to check out Val

(52:03):
kill Marcus, Damn, he's so goodin this. I've never even heard
of this movie. Yeah, came outand just disappeared. Didn't get
any kind of proper push orbacking for some reason, and
just sort of done. Would youlabel this genre drama or it's
crime drama? Yeah, it's very, very reminiscent of Pulp

(52:28):
Fiction, kind of over the top, characters and strange
situations, some violence, butnothing that felt
over the top, but there'sdefinitely good amounts of
violence in it. But,yeah, the whole thing's just
anchored by Val man. So if youwant to watch Val Kilmer, this

(52:50):
is fine. The movie may let youdown a little bit, but he's
holding it all together.
Well. That sounds very cool.
Vanessa, nice job on this. Yes,nice to nice to give him a shout
out. Really a bummer. I did hearthat there are a lot of people
who do not like him because ofwho he was at points in his

(53:13):
life, but we didn't know any ofthat, and all we got to see was
the film. So I was, I was sad tosee him go, Yeah, well, and plus
two, from all indications, he'dlike, left that behind. Yeah, he
turned it around like he'd grownand learned as a person, which I
think is something that shouldbe acknowledged. If you hated
him when he was a dick, maybeyou can, you know, reevaluate

(53:37):
and see who he turned himselfinto. I would
like everybody to think that wayabout me as well from now on.
So that means it's my pick forthe next sub genre.
And I decided I wanted to goscience fiction, but it has to
be science fiction from the1980s

(53:59):
science fiction, at least in the80s, there's some science
fiction in the 80s, if you pickEmpire Strikes Back, Eric, I'm
gonna be very upset. Let me tellyou about this little movie.
So that's what we are doing nextweek.
Excellent. I'm always down forsci fi. I kind of thought you
would be, yeah, yeah. And thenin a couple short weeks, we're
